Inevitable What【電子書籍】[ Sarah Lyn Rogers ]

A chapbook of poems flirting with witchery, travel, iambic pentameter, and saudade. Featuring seventeen gorgeous full-page watercolor illustrations by artist Sirin Thada.

"These gorgeous poems are haunting, intimate, incantatory. Sarah Lyn Rogers's intelligence, sensitivity, depth and wit exude from her lines. And she does not waste a word. Her control of craft leads to an explosion of meaning: 'muted...And yet expansive.'" -- Kate Evans, author of Call It Wonder: An Odyssey of Love, Sex, Spirit, and Travel (Coyote Creek Books)

"Sarah Lyn Rogers's voice cuts through the clamor of everyday life, not by simplifying it or turning a deaf ear but by opening itself fully to the glorious cacophony. Juxtaposing popular music with Buddhist ritual, quotidian housework with arcane witchcraft, these poems ache to capture the flux and inconsistency of our world, knowing success or failure is secondary to the attempt itself: to make meaning, to tame chaos, above all to connect. 'Like pushing a stone upslope sometimes / this need to speak, to explain / exactly what we mean'--Rogers meets this Sisyphean challenge with remarkable poise and music." -- Andrew Altschul, author of Lady Lazarus (Harcourt)

"Sarah Lyn Rogers's book, Inevitable What, crackles with music and magic and the awareness of unseen mysteries enfolding the most ordinary days. Whether she is calling for rain, washing dishes in a steaming kitchen, or listening to the incantations of a foreign tongue, Rogers's poems remain fine-tuned to language's elegant rhythms. They reveal the spells we devise to make meaning of our lives." --Sally Ashton, author of Some Odd Afternoon (BlazeVOX[books])

Makes literature of Niagara Falls available to readers with a variety of interests in literature, culture, and place.

Niagara Falls is a place where lands are contested, industry debated, freedom harbored, the spirit uplifted, and fame won. It overflows with stories. Since before digital technologies made visual reproduction easier and more abundant than ever, writers composed Niagara Falls as symbolically meaningful. But in the face of four centuries of writing on this natural wonder, how does one make these stories new? Niagaras of Ink collects anecdotes of famous writers' experiences-previously untold tales, unique takes on well-known visits, and materials just too good to exclude-with an anthology of some of the most engaging Anglo-American writing on the Falls from the nineteenth to early twentieth centuries. This collection invites readers to re-see Niagara through these lenses.

Behold, My Mother and My Brethren! The Beginning of the Gospel and Becoming a Christian in (Post) Christendom: Volume IーMark 1:1 to 4:41【電子書籍】[ Bryan M. Christman ]

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】Behold, My Mother and My Brethren! The Beginning of the Gospel and Becoming a Christian in (Post) Christendom: Volume IーMark 1:1 to 4:41【電子書籍】[ Bryan M. Christman ]

In this Kierkegaardian reading of Mark's Gospel two of the most creative and passionate witnesses of Christ's gospel are brought together to mutually inform its superlative wonder. Both writers winsomely revealed the nature of human existence in sin, and the new life Jesus lived and made possible for all, as the paradoxical "God-man." They highlighted "the single individual" against the frenzied crowd "in untruth"--driven by despair whether conscious or unconscious--and vulnerable to enticing publicity and deceptive propaganda. The entrenched societal systems unjustly determined for time and eternity who God favored or disfavored. In dramatic contrast, Mark and Kierkegaard both elucidated God's "good news" calling forth the highest and "happy passion" of faith capable of creating a new family unconstrained by the status quo of the established order's old wineskin. In short, through the gospel they powerfully challenged "the system," whether modern "Christendom" or its first-century equivalent and did so by "merely" following Jesus "out over 70,000 fathoms," weathering demonic storms and overcoming dehumanizing societal bureaucracies set against them and humanity at large. This Kierkegaardian reading of Mark reveals two kindred spirits, after Christ's spirit, demonstrating the redemptive love of God for all humanity, centered in Christ.

The Grace of Playing Pedagogies for Leaning into God’s New Creation【電子書籍】[ Courtney T. Goto ]

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】The Grace of Playing Pedagogies for Leaning into God’s New Creation【電子書籍】[ Courtney T. Goto ]

Believers and teachers of faith regularly know the in-breaking of God's Spirit in their midst, when revelatory experiencing unexpectedly shifts habits of thinking, feeling, and doing toward more life-giving ways of being and becoming. When the moment is right, Spirit breathes new life into dry bones. Though religious educators have much practical wisdom about facilitating learning that is creative and transformative, sharper concepts, cases, and theory can help them do it more critically and assist learners to practice openness to wonder, surprise, and authenticity. The Grace of Playing explains how we can create the conditions for revelatory experiencing by understanding it in light of playing. The notion of playing "as if" can be powerfully reclaimed from ecclesial ambivalence, casual speech, and commercial interests that often lead playing to be associated with childishness, frivolity, or entertainment. This book theorizes adults playing for the sake of faith, drawing on D. W. Winnicott's psychoanalytic theory, a revision of Jurgen Moltmann's theology of play, biblical texts, medieval devotional practices, as well as art and aesthetics that help local faith communities engage in theological reflection. Communal forms of playing in/at God's new creation provide insights into pedagogies in which learners are creating and are created anew.

Kumbha (Revised and Updated) The Traditionally Modern Mela【電子書籍】[ Nityananda Misra ]

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】Kumbha (Revised and Updated) The Traditionally Modern Mela【電子書籍】[ Nityananda Misra ]

In this lucid and enlightening account, Nityananda Misra takes the reader on a whirlwind journey through the modern Kumbha Mela, the largest pilgrimage and the biggest festival in the world attended by crores of people.

The book details the origin and symbolism of the Kumbha Mela, its dates and venues, and its awe-inspiring organization that has been called a wonder of modern-day management. It provides a personal close-up view of the visitors at the largest human gathering on earth-the sadhus, the kalpavasis, the tirthayatris, and members of new-age Hindu movements. The author sheds considerable light on the cultural aspects (literature, arts, and music) of the Kumbha and argues how the mela is perhaps the most diverse and inclusive human gathering and how the tradition is immortal, as if made so by the nectar of immortality which is believed to have spilled on the sites of the Kumbha Mela. Throughout the book, the author shows how diverse participants come and work together at the Kumbha Mela following the spirit of samgacchadhvam (“come together”)-a spirit that permeates the mela in his view.

The author captures his personal experience too in Prayaga, Nashik, and Ujjain, leaving an anecdotal touch to the narrative. The final chapter presents an overview of the upcoming Ardha Kumbha Mela in Prayaga in 2019.

About Seasons--The Wind and Weather of Our Days Celebrating Fear and Feeling Alive【電子書籍】[ Robert Nichols ]

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】About Seasons--The Wind and Weather of Our Days Celebrating Fear and Feeling Alive【電子書籍】[ Robert Nichols ]

about Seasonsーthe Wind and Weather of Our Days: Celebrating Fear and Feeling Alive, is the third in the Footlocker Series of books. These works are a gathering of over fifty years of poetry and prose written by me, Robert Nichols. When I write, I seek to express what is most intimate in my experience in terms that reach a world of readers with universal connection. I’m not the only one out here who gets giddy with the chilled promise of autumn and the lusting energies of spring. And it’s not just some clich? sweetness about leaves and blossoms either. This is the core stuff of being. Seasons, wind, and weatherーthe fierce and beautiful power of Nature can keep us humble and exhilarated throughout our lives. It is the very “life and death” intensity of these metamorphic cycles that excites the turning of our years with risk and wonder. Time takes away our days, storms wash away our safety, seasons etch our flesh with danger. Old Spirits out on the plains once told me, “Earth shall never be tame… Celebrate your fear and feel you are alive!” Yes! So, read my poems and join me in celebration of these blessings of flesh and blood and spirit that are, “… the most primal of elementsーweather and winds and waters and allーthe context of our sublime journeys through mundane moments.”

The Hands of Jesus and Other Poems【電子書籍】[ Dorothy Mary Stock ]

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】The Hands of Jesus and Other Poems【電子書籍】[ Dorothy Mary Stock ]

Dorothy Stock (1913-1990) grew up amidst the delightful countryside and natural beauty of Pendle Hill and Morecambe Bay. She explored and adored the natural beauty of Lancashire, and many of these experiences were later re-created in her early poetry.

Her later poetry was composed as a result of an unforgettable weekend at Park Place Conference Centre, where she encountered God's love and power in a deep way. In these poems we see the close presence of the infinitely caring and loving God ? creator, sustainer, healer, saviour.

A love of Nature, a love of children, but above all, a love of God.

These three gifts shine through the poems and prayers contained within this book, all appropriately written by a former infant school teacher, Dorothy Stock, known affectionately as Dot, Dotty, or Stocky.
Read them, and you will be uplifted in body, mind and spirit.

Enrich your own prayers by using those words from The New Day : 'Grant me the gift of laughter, Lord, that I can share it with some sad and lonely soul.'

You will also undoubtedly benefit from the delicate and imaginative thought that refers to 'the peace of God, [which] passeth understanding. It wraps around the soul with silken wings, the mind is stilled, and hushed all earthly clamour.'

So in the words of the Psalmist: 'Taste and see...'

Heather Phillips
Retired head teacher

As I think back to nearly thirty years ago when, as Director of Music at Horfield Parish Church in Bristol, I first came to know Dottie Stock three things stand out in my mind: her gentle smile, her quiet humility and her strength of faith.

Now, as I read through these pages, those three qualities continue to speak to me in this amazing collection of her poems ? many of which I am re-reading from the ones included in the annual Christmas card from the Stock household.

In Dottie's poetry we are once again reminded of the love of Jesus ? the humble servant king, the eternal hope offered to us through our risen and ascended Saviour, and the sheer joy of being part of God's wonder-filled creation.

For all that we say, 'Thank you and God bless you, Dottie!'

Revd Duncan Jennings

Dorothy Stock's deep faith shone through all her poetry and in her relationship with her family and friends. She saw the hand of God, Our Creator, in the whole of the natural world. Her writings were inspired. It was a privilege for me to have known her.

Rosemary Hatherly

I was honoured to be asked to write my thoughts about a very special person called 'Dottie', who was my 'Twinnie'. She was an integral part of my growing up, and we shared the same birthday.

Her poetry speaks from the heart, and encapsulates all that is beautiful in our world through her love of God and his Son Jesus. Her words speak of sorrow, of joys, of hardships, yet through them all the depth of Dottie's faith in Our Lord shines through.

Dottie shared this with me as I grew up, and supported my growth and development as a Christian, as I struggled with working out what being a Christian meant in our world today. I remember that one Good Friday it snowed; as we walked to church, she looked at the daffodils lining our way and commented, 'Even the daffodils laid down their heads and cried on this day.' I looked and saw that, indeed, all the daffodils had lain down their heads in the snow and truly looked as though they were weeping on the day of crucifixion of Our Lord. That image has stayed with me over the years and her poetry brings so many meaningful images to mind.

Thank you, Dottie. I hope all of you who read her poetry now will see how clearly her words expressed her deep love of God and all that brought with it, whether joyous, sad or testing. Through it all His support and love are constant and unchanging.

Dendy Harris

Poetry can say things which prose cannot and the poetry of others can touch us in ways we are not able ourselves to express in any words. Especially where poems take their inspiration from things all of us see ? in nature, in our local community, among our family and friends ? what they tell us can help us look and listen with fresh eyes and newly opened ears. For Christian people, that's about discerning again the dependence of all that is made and all that befalls us upon the love of God.

These poems from 'Stocky', as I knew her, tell how sensitively she was herself moved by what happened to her in life, both the bright, sunlit times but also the stormy ones, through the whole year, day by day, wherever she was; and how strongly she felt that all she experienced was shaped and held by the love of God. She was, as she would have been the first to admit, an ordinary soul; but another poet tells us that we might just find 'heaven in ordinary'.

Stocky kept us company when I was part of her congregational family in Bristol and, through what she has written here, her inspiration can go on being present, encouraging, revealing, confirming.

John Rodwell
One time non-stipendiary curate, Holy Trinity, Horfield

Hammer Is the Prayer Selected Poems【電子書籍】[ Christian Wiman ]

A luminous collection spanning three decades from one of America's most acclaimed poets

Christian Wiman, hailed for his "daring and urgent" poetry (The New York Times Book Review), has forged a singular style that fuses vivid musicality, clear-eyed realism, wry humor, and visionary intensity. In his critically acclaimed memoir, My Bright Abyss, Wiman ponders poetry's role in a world afire. Hammer Is the Prayer: Selected Poems stands as a powerful response.

From the taut forms of his early work to the jagged fluencies of his later collections, Hammer Is the Prayer showcases Wiman's restless interrogations and slashing lyrical precision. Yet it also reveals his narrative gifts, as in "Five Houses Down" with its "wonder-cluttered porch" and "eyesore opulence," or the tragicomic figure in "Being Serious" who endures "the world's idiocy / like a saint its pains."

Curated by the author himself, this generous selection affirms Wiman's place as an essential voice in contemporary poetry. Brimming with metaphysical urgency and a multifaceted spirit, Hammer Is the Prayer bears witness to the human experience in all its riven beauty.

Bed of Impatiens Poems【電子書籍】[ Katie Hartsock ]

Katie Hartsock’s Bed of Impatiens is astir in myths and mythmaking in the backdrop of the grit, waters, scenes and atmospheres of the Midwest. While its tributes to Saint Augustine’s Confessions are by turns meditative and daring, its travelogue of “Hotels, Motels, and Extended Stays” is quirky, irreverent and, yes, delightful. In Bed of Impatiens you can feel “the bliss/ and the burning too.” Little wonder it is a finalist in the 2015 Able Muse Book Award.

PRAISE FOR BED OF IMPATIENS:

Has American poetry ever produced a fresher, savvier, grittier, more elegant, and drop-dead formally exhilarating sequence than Katie Hartsock’s “Hotels, Motels, and Extended Stays”? If so, I’ve yet to see it. Hartsock is as deft (and loving) with the vulgarities of truck stop rent-by-the-hour as with the secret wit of rhyme, or the venerables of Homeric epic: her range and her inventiveness appear to know no limit. And this is just a fraction of what bursts to life in Bed of Impatiens. I’m dazzled by the sheer bounty of it.
-Linda Gregerson

Like Ren? Magritte I want to paint “This is not a first book” under this first book. It is Lolita all grown up and taking us on a cross-country tour of the motels she stayed in with Humbert. It’s St. Augustine as Dennis Rodman, elbowing us out of position underneath God’s basket. But it’s not a cacophony of surrealism. Ms. Hartsock’s classical training-her knowledge and powerful rhythms-is the ground, the spine of this book (pun intended); but the excitement is watching the ancient and the contemporary meet in an explosion of true Form.
-James Cummins

Katie Hartsock’s Bed of Impatiens characteristic vantage includes landscapes derelict and macabre, like the flooded grave in the first poem, and the endless highways of the US, with their extended-stay motels and the ghosts that inhabit them. Hartsock is a sharp and clever reader of the books of nature and of art, yet writes in nobody’s shadow.
-Mary Kinzie

What truth to find in a world whose rivers “we cannot swim in and no/ cannot drink the water/ cannot imagine that,” a land of “seedless sweetness” and dank motels that are its monuments to transience? Katie Hartsock’s answer in her ambitious first collection, Bed of Impatiens, is to wander and “let the weather in,” to keep recalibrating her position in an ever-shifting poetic landscape.
-Lee Sharkey

Katie Hartsock is attracted to “beauty in otherwise unlovely place.” An often amused and goodhearted spirit sets the tone of some of Hartsock’s poems, but the long historical and literary view of this poet also encompasses the tragic. Open to encounter, memory, feeling, avid for them, eloquent about them, these poems.
-Reginald Gibbons (from the foreword)

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

Katie Hartsock was born in Youngstown, Ohio, and has lived in Cincinnati, Ann Arbor, and Chicago. She holds an MFA from the University of Michigan and a PhD in Comparative Literary Studies from Northwestern University. Recipient of the 2015 Page Davidson Clayton Prize for Emerging Poets, she is the author of two poetry chapbooks, Hotels, Motels, and Extended Stays and Veritas Caput. Her poems have appeared in Beloit Poetry Journal, Massachusetts Review, Southwest Review, RHINO, Measure, Michigan Quarterly Review, and Midwestern Gothic, among other journals, and in the anthology Down to the Dark River: Poems about the Mississippi River (Louisiana Literature Press, 2015).
From Buddy Holly and the Crickets to the Flatlanders, Terry Allen, and Natalie Maines, Lubbock, Texas, has produced songwriters, musicians, and artists as prolifically as cotton, conservatives, and windstorms. While nobody questions where the conservatives come from in a city that a recent nonpartisan study ranked as America's second most conservative, many people wonder why Lubbock is such fertile ground for creative spirits who want to expand the boundaries of thought in music and art. Is it just that "there's nothing else to do," as some have suggested, or is there something in the character of Lubbock that encourages creativity as much as conservatism?

In this book, Christopher Oglesby interviews twenty-five musicians and artists with ties to Lubbock to discover what it is about this community and West Texas in general that feeds the creative spirit. Their answers are revealing. Some speak of the need to rebel against conventional attitudes that threaten to limit their horizons. Others, such as Joe Ely, praise the freedom of mind they find on the wide open plains. "There is this empty desolation that I could fill if I picked up a pen and wrote, or picked up a guitar and played," he says. Still others express skepticism about how much Lubbock as a place contributes to the success of its musicians. Jimmie Dale Gilmore says, "I think there is a large measure of this Lubbock phenomenon that is just luck, and that is the part that you cannot explain."

As a whole, the interviews create a portrait not only of Lubbock's musicians and artists, but also of the musical community that has sustained them, including venues such as the legendary Cotton Club and the original Stubb's Barbecue. This kaleidoscopic portrait of the West Texas music scene gets to the heart of what it takes to create art in an isolated, often inhospitable environment. As Oglesby says, "Necessity is the mother of creation. Lubbock needed beauty, poetry, humor, and it needed to get up and shake its communal ass a bit or go mad from loneliness and boredom; so Lubbock created the amazing likes of Jimmie Dale Gilmore, Butch Hancock, Terry Allen, and Joe Ely."

The Tempest The Wisdom of Shakespeare【電子書籍】[ Peter Dawkins ]

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】The Tempest The Wisdom of Shakespeare【電子書籍】[ Peter Dawkins ]

Shakespeare's Tempest needs little introduction as being one of his greatest and yet one of his most mysterious plays. In this stimulating book, the author delves into this mystery, introducing the reader to the real meaning of Prospero’s magic, the nature of Ariel his spirit, the roles of the other characters as aspects of the human psyche, and the alchemical and cosmological rhythms of the play. The Tempest is shown as being a ‘book’ of wisdom and initiation, with many levels of profound meaning, written by a Master who knows the nature and possibilities of the human mind, and who appears to have been deeply involved in the underground Rosicrucian movement of his time. This is the fourth of Peter Dawkins’ books on the Wisdom of Shakespeare. The series is devoted to showing the depth of wisdom and the extraordinary knowledge of the Mystery traditions contained in the Shakespeare plays. The books are written for all Shakespeare lovers, students of the Western wisdom traditions, and for actors and audience alike. ‘With meticulous research and astonishingly diverse knowledge Peter Dawkins creates a provocative and compelling case for seeing The Tempest as an initiatory text and a true mystery play. This valuable series will change the way you think about Shakespeare.’ Richard Olivier, Director of Mythodrama, Creative management courses, Globe Theatre. ‘We know Shakespeare is entertaining, and his work a phenomenon amongst mankind’s achievements, but what is he actually saying to us? There are many interpretations. I find Peter’s one of the most beautiful and one that is beneficial to my life, enriching my ability to live intimately with myself, others, and the world around me, seen and unseen.’ Mark Rylance, Artistic Director of the Shakespeare Globe Theatre. ‘Whether you are a student of Renaissance Neoplatonism or someone who is just plain curious about the extraordinary magic that the Shakespeare plays still exert over our lives, globally, then you will find, as I have, that Peter Dawkins will lead you through a maze of wonder in his exploration of The Tempest. There is a beauty and harmony to Peter’s work that embraces all cultures and beliefs in an extraordinary voyage of discovery.’ Claire Van Kampen, Director of Theatre Music, Shakespeare Globe Theatre.

The Necessary Earth Nature and Solitude in American Literature【電子書籍】[ Wilson O. Clough ]

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】The Necessary Earth Nature and Solitude in American Literature【電子書籍】[ Wilson O. Clough ]

The Necessary Earth is a study of the degree to which the long American experience with an open frontier has entered into an inherently American literature to distinguish it from that of other lands. Since literature is, in the author’s words, “a compound of time, place, and the individual projection of personal experience and reflection into objective forms,” the American compulsion to communicate their experience and their difference was a virtual guarantee that a native literature would arrive.

?The text falls into three major portions. The first considers the “age of wonder,” the impact of New World upon Old World comers to effect profound changes, and to set the new American on the parallel paths of idealism and pragmatism. The second part examines the effort of native-born writers to appropriate this experience for new metaphors and new literary theme. Without this effort, the frontier might have remained no more than a dwindling legend, and the transference to the theme of self-reliance might never have appeared. In the third portion the author turns to the twentieth century, examining here the degree to which the national theme of reliance on experience over tradition has persisted in the work of major authors.

?Ranging thus from Jamestown and Plymouth to Wallace Stevens, the book stresses, throughout, the pull of untamed nature on the human spirit, and the echoes of that experience in what is most intrinsic in American literature. Without denying frontier lawlessness or native chauvinism, Clough directs our attention primarily to the problems of the creation of a new language and a new metaphor to meet the new experience, and the persistence of a truly American note into a maturing of both manner and matter.

The Tempest【電子書籍】[ William Shakespeare ]

Believed to have been written between 1610 and 1611, “The Tempest” is likely the last play written solely by Shakespeare. The story concerns the Magician Prospero, the rightful Duke of Milan, and his daughter, Miranda, who have been stranded on an island by Prospero’s jealous brother Antonio. The plot of “The Tempest” itself is however of less importance than in Shakespeare’s other works. Supernatural elements are introduced with great freedom, and the dramatist’s interest was clearly not in the reproduction of lifelike events. The presentation of character and the attractive picturing of the beauty of magnanimity and forgiveness are the things which, along with its delightful poetry, make the charm of this play. It is not to be wondered at that readers have frequently been led to find in the figure of the great magician, laying aside his robes and wonder-working rod in a spirit of love and peace toward all men, a symbol of the dramatist himself at the close of his great career; and it is surely legitimate to play with this idea without assuming that Shakespeare consciously embodied it. One can hardly conceive a more fitting epilogue to the volume which is the crown of the world’s dramatic literature than the romance of “The Tempest”. This edition includes a preface and annotations by Henry N. Hudson, an introduction by Charles H. Herford, and a biographical afterword.

Marigold and Rose A Fiction【電子書籍】[ Louise Gl?ck ]

"Marigold was absorbed in her book; she had gotten as far as the V." So begins Marigold and Rose, Louise Gl?ck's astonishing chronicle of the first year in the life of twin girls. Imagine a fairy tale that is also a multigenerational saga; a piece for two hands that is also a symphony; a poem that is also, in the spirit of Kafka's The Metamorphosis, an incandescent act of autobiography. Here are the elements you'd expect to find in a story of infant twins: Father and Mother, Grandmother and Other Grandmother, bath time and naptimeーbut more than that, Marigold and Rose is an investigation of the great mystery of language and of time itself, of what is and what has been and what will be. "Outside the playpen there were day and night. What did they add up to? Time was what they added up to. Rain arrived, then snow." The twins learn to climb stairs, they regard each other like criminals through the bars of their cribs, they begin to speak. "It was evening. Rose was smiling placidly in the bathtub playing with the squirting elephant, which, according to Mother, represented patience, strength, loyalty and wisdom. How does she do it, Marigold thought, knowing what we know." Simultaneously sad and funny, and shot through with a sense of stoic wonder, this small miracle of a book, following thirteen books of poetry and two collections of essays, is unlike anything Gl?ck has written, while at the same time it is inevitable, transcendent.
