Women of the Frontier【電子書籍】[ Billy Kennedy ]

American frontier women of the 18th century were an extraordinary people whose contribution to the creation of the United States is one of the most enduring stories in history.

The gallant women of the frontier have never been given the full credit they deserve for settling with their families in an uninhabited wilderness. This book places on record the notable achievements of these heroines.

Northern Ireland author/journalist Billy Kennedy, in the eighth of his Scots-Irish Chronicles, gives recognition to the women whose lot was far from glamorous in the bleak and lonely frontier territories. They faced personal hardships and tragedies in hazardous conditions. While the men toiled arduously from dawn to dusk to lay down a stake in the New World, the women were the cornerstones of the home, the church, and the wider community.

Women had to be strong, self-reliant, resourceful, and loyal to their families. Through their honest and dedicated endeavours on the frontier, a democratic and decent civilization emerged which now extends across the great American expanse from the Atlantic to the Pacific. Indeed, the women of the American frontier deserve our honor and admiration.

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】Chasing Good Sense A Boy's Life on the Frontier【電子書籍】[ Homer McCarty ]

In this creative memoir, Homer McCarty adopts the voice of seven-year-old Buck to recollect his own life growing up in rugged southern Utah Territory in the late 1800s. Although Buck’s reflections are necessarily impreciseーgathered from fragments of memory and then embellished freelyーthe stories he tells are an honest look at life on the frontier.

In the spirit of Huck Finn, Buck embarks on adventures and mischief with his loyal friend, Earl. Na?ve, eager, and inquisitive, he seeks to make sense of his world. McCarty’s portrayal of the period is often humorous, capturing the intimacy of place and family through a young boy’s eyes.

McCarty completed this work in 1948. Had it not been for a series of fortuitous events and the dedication of his granddaughters, including Coralie Beyers, these pages would have been lost. 【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】Catspaw The Girty, McKee, and Elliott Families, and Indian Negotiations on the American Frontier 1710-1778【電子書籍】[ Ronald E. Hagen ]

Members of the Girty, McKee, and Elliott families were actively involved in Indian-white diplomacy in the American Northwest from before the 1730s to the end of the War of 1812. The involvement included as many as five generations in the families. Family members started out as fur traders with several Indian nations, but their careers gradually evolved into serving as agents and negotiators for the British government. They were actively involved in seven frontier wars and would eventually contribute to efforts to set up what was, in effect, a buffer Indian state located between the United States and British-governed Canada. The book Catspaw covers the first half of the families' involvement in British-Indian affairs. It concludes in the spring of 1778 when members of the three families defected from working with the Americans to joining the British in promoting frontier war against the Americans. To the Americans, the defection was an act of treason. To the British and later the Canadians, it was an act of loyalty.

Red Tide Life On the Martian Frontier【電子書籍】[ Jim Grebey ]

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】Red Tide Life On the Martian Frontier【電子書籍】[ Jim Grebey ]

On a windswept sand dune in Kitty Hawk North Carolina, Orville and Wilbur Wright created a new world in 1903 when they made their historic first airplane flight. It had taken a train and a steamship to transport their flier from Dayton Ohio to Kitty Hawk. No one ever imagined how much their world would change after the invention of a machine that would enable human flight. No one imagined the new world when, just a mere sixty-six years later in 1969, man would take human flight to its logical destiny and step onto the surface of the Moon. Had someone predicted that future in 1903, one can almost see the headlines ready to proclaim it wasn't possible as people laughed the person making such an outlandish prediction out of town… on a steam locomotive no doubt. Sixty-six years is not a long time, yet the world went from Orville and Wilbur and their wooden flier to Neil Armstrong and the Lunar Excursion Module. And now it has been over fifty years since Neil Armstrong took his first step on the Moon. Since then, humans have not taken a sabbatical from space exploration or from their pursuit of technologic innovation. Microelectronics, personal computers, cell phones, GPS systems… technology has had major breakthroughs. In those same fifty years the international space station taught us about extended life in space while projects like the Jet Propulsion Labs Mars Rovers have increased our knowledge of that planet and taught us about landing spacecraft on Mars. The human thirst for knowledge will never allow us to stop seeking new frontiers to gain new knowledge. It's in our DNA. Humans seek knowledge for knowledge sake and when we are at our best, we adapt and apply what we learn to improve our lives. Today, man is poised to take the next steps by colonizing the Moon and Mars. Can you imagine that world? "Red Tide - Life on The Martian Frontier" tells the story of Myah, a 27-year-old marine biologist, working on a grant from NASA to identify new marine life forms on the Great Barrier Reef. She is suddenly recalled to Florida to meet with her grant sponsor who turns out to be the newly elected governor of Mars Colony 1, a mining colony with 5000 residents. Her life makes a radical change when it becomes clear her sponsor wants to send a marine biologist to look for past life on Mars. He shows Myah a sediment rock extracted from a bore sample on Mars. Red Tide follows Myah's journey, beginning on a cruise ship that takes her to Armstrong City on the Moon and then continues with a five-month journey on a transport headed to the colony on Mars. Myah believes the sediment rock is evidence that proves Mars once had a vast surface ocean that disappeared following a radical climate change event. The sediment rock offers a clue that points to past life on the planet. Myah joins an expedition as part of a team following that clue into the Martian frontier where they survive the hostile atmosphere and destructive Martian winds to discover a hidden secret about the planet. This book gives the reader a real picture of what life will be like at the end of the 21st Century. Red Tide looks at life 66 years from now, in a time when the commercialism of the Moon has turned it into a magnet for space tourism and where there are 5,000 colonists already living on Mars. It is a time when pandemics and climate change are driving man to live on alien worlds. Red Tide by Jim Grebey will challenge your imagination... and help you picture what life will be like at the end of this century. A world your grandchildren may well live in.

Beyond the Old Frontier【電子書籍】[ George Bird Grinnell ]

The vast territory between the Mississippi River and the Pacific Ocean was once the Far West, beyond the frontier, the Indian countryーthe unknown. Beyond the great river which bounded it on the east was a fringe of settlements. Scattered through the more distant country were the trading-posts to which the trapper brought his furs. Gold was discovered in California, and a wild rush of people anxious to better their condition had started across the plains, bound for the distant Eldorado. Along these deep-worn roads were the graves of those who had perished on the way; sometimes mere mounds of earth, hardly showing on the level prairie, or perhaps marked by a bit of board thrust in the ground, bearing a pencilled name and date, which the winter’s storms would soon obliterate. Gold was then discovered in the Rocky Mountains. The village of Denver was established, and along the mountain streams the prospector worked with pick and shovel and pan, and wore away his strength and his courage in hunting for gold. Montana also began to yield gold, and Salmon River and Alder Gulch were at the beginnings of their fame. Stages were running across the continent, and the pony express was established. The accounts in the following pages deal with that country, then unknown, and the explorers who penetrated it. It deals with exploration, hunting, the taking of fur, and Indians in peace and war.

Frontier Stories presents 18 short-stories about the Old West. Almost all of them involve deadly encounters between cowboys, miners, cavalry, and settlers with outlaws and IndiansーUtes, Paiutes, Sioux, Cheyenne, Pawnee, and Crow. The narrators of his stories are interested observers. Warman’s West is almost bereft of females. But in one story, a white woman, who keeps a boarding house in Cripple Creek, Colorado, shoots a suspicious man who turns out to be a deputy on duty during a miner’s strike. In another, a prostitute figures in the story only because she visits Bob Ford’s dancehall collecting for the burial of another woman just before he is shot.

Before fame and fortune found Cy Warman, he had been a struggling writer in Colorado. After a short career working for the railroad, he was editor of the Creede, Colorado, newspaper, The Chronicle. There he knew both Bob Ford and Soapy Smith, and on a fateful June day in 1892, he was one of the first to rush through the door of Ford’s dancehall to find him shot dead.

Warman was a collector and teller of stories, some of them told in the manner of yarn swapping at a gentlemen’s club, some with the energetic flair of a news writer. How much is fiction and how much nonfiction is hard to say. He knows his audience’s fascination for the Old West when it was chiefly occupied by Indians, cowboys, outlaws, and the first railroad men (bit.ly/2J19iZJ).

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】The Shawnee Tomahawk A True Story of an American Frontier Boy 1784-1797【電子書籍】[ Frances Leigh Williams ]

Taken from an old record, THE SHAWNEE TOMAHAWK is the almost unbelievable but true story of the Moore family of Abb's Valley, Virginia, in 1784, and of teen-age Jim and his capture by the Shawnees during an Indian raid. For Jim, a Shawnee prisoner, there follows an exhausting march in pain and hunger to the Shawnee villages in Ohio. Upon arrival he is sold as a slave-captive to an old squaw and her husband. He earns respect among the Shawness for his physical skills and courage, but knows that at any time they could turn against him and his life would be endangered. Escape seems impossible, but Jim lives in hope of returning to his family. Eventually the squaw sells Jim to a French - Canadian trader which brings Jim relief from tensions in the Shawnee village. In Canada, Jim overhears a conversation about his sister Mary. He learns that she, too, was captured by the Shawnees and sold to a man in Canada. Thrilled by the new Jim can hardly wait to see her, and he hopes the two of them can perhaps work out a plan to return to Virginia. Excitingly told as a fiction story, THE SHAWNEE TOMAHAWK is dramatic and exceptionally well written.

The Letters of George Long Brown A Yankee Merchant on Florida's Antebellum Frontier【

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】The Letters of George Long Brown A Yankee Merchant on Florida's Antebellum Frontier【電子書籍】

Previously unpublished letters offering a view of everyday life in north Florida before the Civil War

In 1840, twenty-three-year-old George Long Brown migrated from New Hampshire to north Florida, a region just emerging from the devastating effects of the Second Seminole War. This volume presents over seventy of Brown’s previously unpublished letters to illuminate day-to-day life in pre?Civil War Florida.

Brown’s personal and business correspondence narrates his daily activities and his views on politics, labor practices, slavery, fundamentalist religion, and local gossip. Having founded a successful mercantile establishment in Newnansville, Brown traveled the region as far as Savannah and Charleston, purchasing goods from plantations and strengthening social and economic ties in two of the region’s most developed cities. In the decade leading up to the Civil War, Brown married into one of the largest slaveholding families in the area and became involved in the slave trade. He also bartered with locals and mingled with the judges, lawyers, and politicians of Alachua County.

The Letters of George Long Brown provides an important eyewitness view of north Florida’s transformation from a subsistence and herding community to a market economy based on cotton, timber, and other crops, showing that these changes came about in part due to an increased reliance on slavery. Brown’s letters offer the first social and economic history of one of the most important yet little-known frontiers in the antebellum South.

A volume in the series Contested Boundaries, edited by Gene Allen Smith

The Frontier Below The Past, Present and Future of Our Quest to Go Deeper Underwater【電子書籍】[ Jeff Maynard ]

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】The Frontier Below The Past, Present and Future of Our Quest to Go Deeper Underwater【電子書籍】[ Jeff Maynard ]

Triumphs and disasters in the deep sea

This is a journey through time and water, to the bottom of the ocean and the future of our planet.

We do not see the ocean when we look at the water that blankets more than two thirds of our planet. We only see the entrance to it. Beyond that entrance is a world hostile to humans, yet critical to our survival. The first divers to enter that world held their breath and splashed beneath the surface, often clutching rocks to pull them down. Over centuries, they invented wooden diving bells, clumsy diving suits, and unwieldy contraptions in attempts to go deeper and stay longer. But each advance was fraught with danger, as the intruders had to survive the crushing weight of water, or the deadly physiological effects of breathing compressed air. The vertical odyssey continued when explorers squeezed into heavy steel balls dangling on cables, or slung beneath floats filled with flammable gasoline. Plunging into the narrow trenches between the tectonic plates of the Earth’s crust, they eventually reached the bottom of the ocean in the same decade that men first walked on the moon.

Today, as nations scramble to exploit the resources of the ocean floor, The Frontier Below recalls a story of human endeavour that took 2,000 years to travel seven miles, then investigates how we will explore the ocean in the future.

Meticulously researched and drawing extensively on unpublished sources and personal interviews, The Frontier Below is the untold story of the pioneers who had the right stuff, but were forgotten because they went in the wrong direction.
