Sheriff Chase Lowell has never been more scared in his life than when he discovers the diner where Hannah Porter works has been robbed at gunpoint. He’s been in love with her for as long as he can remember, but has kept his feelings in check because she’s his best friend’s little sister.

Hannah has had a crush on Chase since she was in the third grade. He’s kind, compassionate, and as handsome as they come. They’ve known each other forever, which seems to be the problemーhe thinks of her more as a kid sister rather than a romantic interest.

But something changes the night he races into the diner and crushes her in his arms. When he makes her safety his personal mission, Hannah decides to make it her mission to get him to see her in a different light.

Excerpt:

Hannah’s loved Chase forever, but she’s his best friend’s kid sister…

“I don’t want to hurt you, Hannah. I think the world of you; I always have. But I…I don’t think about you that way. I mean, hell, you’re beautiful and sexy and any man would be lucky to have you, butー”

“Any man but you?” she countered, her chest tight with repressed hurt and confusion.

He reached out as if to clasp her hand, but she stepped back out of his reach.

“You’re like a little sister to me, dammit,” he all but choked out. “I would hate to ruin what we have by jumping into bed together.”

Hannah could only stare at him, no cohesive thoughts forming in her brain. She’d known the truth about this man, yet she’d thrown cautionーand her good senseーright out the window at the first sign he might be interested. Only she’d misinterpreted those signs and made a complete frickin’ fool of herself. Well, lesson learned.

She gave a decisive nod. “You’re right. And let’s be honest, most of the blame falls to me. I’ve been lonely, I’m still a little freaked out over what happened last night, and I drank a lot more wine than I should have. You’re as comfortable as an old pair of shoes, so I turned to you for comfort. The wrong kind. If anything, I’m the one who owes you an apology.”

“Hannahー”

“If you plan to follow me to work tomorrow, I’ll be leaving the house at five-thirty. ‘Night, Sheriff.”

With as much dignity as she could muster, Hannah strode into the house and headed up to bed. Somehow, she managed to hold the tears at bay until safely ensconced in her room.

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】Only Child Writers on the Singular Joys and Solitary Sorrows of Growing Up Solo【電子書籍】

Only children don’t have to share bedrooms, toys, or the backseat of a car. They don’t have to share allowances, inheritances, or their parents’ attention. But when they get into trouble, they can’t just blame their imaginary friends. In Only Child, twenty-one acclaimed writers tell the truth about life without siblingsーthe bliss of solitude, the ache of loneliness, and everything in between. In this unprecedented collection, writers like Judith Thurman, Kathryn Harrison, John Hodgman, and Peter Ho Davies reflect on the single, transforming episode that defined each of them as an only child. For some it came while lurking around the edges of a friend’s boisterous family, longing to be part of the chaos. For others, it came in sterile hospital halls, while single-handedly caring for a parent with cancer. They write about the parents who raised them, from the devoted to the dismissive. They describe what it’s like to be an only child of divorce, an only because of the death of a sibling, an only who reveled in it or an only who didn’t. In candid, poignant, and often hilarious essays, these authorsーincluding the children of Erica Jong, Alice Walker, and Phyllis Roseーexplore a lifetime of onliness. As adults searching for partners, they are faced with the unique challenge of trying to turn a longtime trio into a quartet. In deciding whether to give junior a sib, they weigh the benefits of producing the friend they never had against the fear that they will not know how to divide their love and attention among multiples. As they watch their parents age, they come face-to-face with the onus of being their family’s sole historian.Whether you’re an only child curious about how your experiences compare to others’, the partner or spouse of an only, a parent pondering whether to stop at one, or someone with siblings who’s always wondered how the other half lives, Only Child offers a look behind the scenes and into the hearts of twenty-one smart and sensitive writers as they reveal the truth about growing upーand being a grown-upーsolo.

Fitzhugh Lee (November 19, 1835 April 28, 1905) was a cavalry officer for the Confederacy, the Governor of Virginia, and later a general in the Spanish-American War, fighting for the country that he had fought against over 30 years earlier. While all of this would be enough to earn him distinction, he is remembered primarily today for being the nephew of General Robert E. Lee, as well as one of his most vocal defenders and supporters. Fitz Lee wrote several works about the Civil War that, along with other generals like Jubal Early, helped form the basis for the Lost Cause and helped create the reputation of reverence for Robert E. Lee that is still widely held today. In addition to deifying Robert E. Lee, Fitz Lee, Early, and other authors like them often clashed with former Confederate comrades like James Longstreet, who either were not Virginian or had been critical of Robert E. Lee themselves. Debates between the men persisted into the 20th century, and theyre partially responsible for memoirs like James Longstreets From Manassas to Appomattox. In General Lee, Fitzhugh Lee covers his uncles life and career before and after the Civil War, but not surprisingly the most interesting part of the book deals with the war itself. Readers will quickly understand that Fitzhugh Lee holds his uncle above reproach, casting blame elsewhere for battles like Gettysburg. It is still a valuable resource today for understanding the Lost Cause mentality, and the manner in which hero worship of General Lee developed. This edition of Fitzhugh Lees biography is specially formatted with a Table of Contents and illustrated with pictures of Lee and other important generals of the war.

Daring dragon-riders fight to save a uniquely magical world from destruction by vengeful outcasts, in Storm Riders by Margaret Weis and Robert Krammes

In a world where magic is intrinsic to the fabric of everyday life, two kingdoms, centuries-long enemies, have long sought a powerful magical weapon that will win them lasting dominance. But neither realm is ready when they are both attacked by the Bottom-Dwellers, a bitter people whose own land was destroyed, and who now live only to take vengeance on those they blame for a wretched life in the storm-tossed abyss they inhabit. Using contramagic strengthened by blood sacrifice to attack the world above, they threaten to bring down whole cities, or even the island kingdoms themselves. Freya and Rosia are forced to put aside their age-old conflict to defend themselves, or risk losing everything.

As the Bottom-Dwellers' contramagic eats away at the magic of the dragons that helps protect the world above, a former dragon-riding hero gathers a ragtag group to form a new dragon brigade, the one desperate hope of the two kingdoms to defeat the fiends who threaten their world. As the effects of contramagic bring the world ever closer to disaster, the new dragon brigade fight the vengeful adversary.
David Niven appeared in films for over 50 years of his life, from swashbucklers such as The Prisoner of Zenda and The Guns of Navarone to the Pink Panther series. Despite his on-screen persona, Niven wasn’ t always the perfect gentleman. He was insecure both privately and professionally and used people to get ahead. But he did, he said, ‘ at least try to be a decent man.’ He knew he often failed, although it isn’ t easy to find people who ever had a bad word to say about him. In this fascinating biography of the star, Munn looks at the funny stories and the sad underlying truth, from his outrageous days with Errol Flynn and their irrevocable split ? ‘ You always know where you are with Flynn. He always lets you down’ ? and numerous affairs with stars and prostitutes, to an attempted suicide, his horrific experiences in war-torn France and the breakdown and blame of his second marriage. This compelling text includes interviews with his second wife, Hjordis, John Huston, Rex Harrison, Laurence Olivier, Loretta Young (they discussed marriage once), Niven’ s long-time friend Michael Trubshawe, Peter Ustinov, Ava Gardner and many more.
Funny, poignant and told with the compassion of one who knew him, this is a fascinating portrayal of a legend that really gets behind the screen and autobiographical persona.

‘ Reveals the actor’ s dark side and drastically changes the light-hearted self-portrait that Niven draws of himself in The Moon’ s a Balloon’ Sunday Express

Writer, actor, director and former journalist and Hollywood publicist, Michael Munn, has written 21 books, including the best selling John Wayne: the Man behind the Myth and the acclaimed Richard Burton: Prince of Players

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】Over the Bridge An Essay in Autobiography【電子書籍】[ Richard Church ]

Over the Bridge, the first volume of Richard Church's personal essays, originally published in 1955, takes the reader through the poet's Edwardian childhood adventures. With his detailed descriptions and insightful observations Church paints an idyllic image of his early years passed in the safety of the close-knit lower middle-class home where his loving, hard working parents did all they could to protect their sons from the harsh reality of Britain at the end of the Victorian era. He ponders with humour the disappointments of his first school endeavours; his academic failure made him feel an outcast until it was discovered that not a poor intellectual capacity but rather the child's poor eyesight was to blame for his lack of concentration and understanding of his school subjects. And finally Church takes us through his teenage years, which began happily with a promise of undisturbed literary and artistic pursuits at Camberwell Art School but were soon tainted with worry over the diminishing health of their beloved mother ? the pillar of the Church family.

Over the Bridge is not only a touching portrait of Church's childhood self but also an intriguing and detailed picture of the social and economic realities of the Edwardian era. In 1955 Over the Bridge was awarded the Sunday Times Prize for Literature.

The Memories of two little kids in the 40s, 50s【電子書籍】[ David G. Simpson ]
AS THE READER, I SUSPECT THAT YOU ARE AS GUILTY AS MY BROTHER RON AND ME FOR RAISING HELL IN YOUR YOUTH. Within these pages are the memories of two senior citizens who drove their family and neighbors absolutely crazy with their youthful foolhardiness during the forties and fifties in Acton, Massachusetts. True stories of two youngsters who terrorized a town, enraged their parents, Ole Ern and Ethel, their neighbors, Ray and Bell Harris, and succeeded in blaming all of them on another kid labeled Gunk, who is ultimately the star of this book. “He was much taller than us, and uglier too. The jerk was as stupid as a box of hair, yet because he thought it funny to push my four-year-old face into his butt and release gas . . . well, it was war.” It didn’t matter what crime we committed; the fact that Gunk was there to take the blame ensured that Ron and I would live another day to get up to more antics, create more chaos, which would be enough to condemn our neighbor across the street. Ron and I did so many tricks on a lot of people that the end results of blaming that other person and getting away with it were so funny that inspiration became an extension of our disruptive activities. Gunk Did It became my mantra for the subsequent indiscretions and were cause for his receiving castigations from anyone we deemed necessary. Predictable as always, as we were to proclaim that Gunk Did It, we never tired of conspiring against him. I owe my learning to inflict falsehoods never dreamed of by humankind to Gunk’s butt-inflicted abuse, which initiated and developed our proclivity for youthful and very funny revenge.

16-year-old Eden Velasco is haunted - by a girl with a face-splitting smile, by one who likes to hang on to her window sills at night, and by another who chokes on her own ashes. Sometimes, Eden wonders if it's just better to bite her wrist and bleed herself to death.

Eden has tried hard to fake being normal, recording episodes of MTV reality shows that she never watches and covering her walls with posters of boy bands she can't even name. And she can't see ghosts. She can't. Yet everything Eden's worked hard for starts to unravel when a dead little girl with paper eyes starts stalking her, leaving dead bodies in her wake.

And before Eden knows it, the men in white have straitjacketed her back to the cold place. St. Dymphna's Institute of Mental Illnesses and Disorders is a place where it is winter all year long without the snow, where ghosts come and go and every one of them is not right.

As the lines between reality and blood-stained dreams continue to blur, Eden finds herself playing Pied Piper to bitter spirits who blame her for their murders. 【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】Specters of Mother India The Global Restructuring of an Empire【電子書籍】[ Mrinalini Sinha ]

Specters of Mother India tells the complex story of one episode that became the tipping point for an important historical transformation. The event at the center of the book is the massive international controversy that followed the 1927 publication of Mother India, an expos? written by the American journalist Katherine Mayo. Mother India provided graphic details of a variety of social ills in India, especially those related to the status of women and to the particular plight of the country’s child wives. According to Mayo, the roots of the social problems she chronicled lay in an irredeemable Hindu culture that rendered India unfit for political self-government. Mother India was reprinted many times in the United States, Great Britain, and India; it was translated into more than a dozen languages; and it was reviewed in virtually every major publication on five continents.

Sinha provides a rich historical narrative of the controversy surrounding Mother India, from the book’s publication through the passage in India of the Child Marriage Restraint Act in the closing months of 1929. She traces the unexpected trajectory of the controversy as critics acknowledged many of the book’s facts only to overturn its central premise. Where Mayo located blame for India’s social backwardness within the beliefs and practices of Hinduism, the critics laid it at the feet of the colonial state, which they charged with impeding necessary social reforms. As Sinha shows, the controversy became a catalyst for some far-reaching changes, including a reconfiguration of the relationship between the political and social spheres in colonial India and the coalescence of a collective identity for women.

Some crimes are bigger than others, and the same is true of crime stories. Rogues Gallery brings together for the first time a series of shorter Sebastian McCabe-Jeff Cody mysteries - three novellas and two short stories. The many fans of the McCabe - Cody novels will be delighted to find that these tales are characterized by the same dry humor, solid plotting, and adroit characterization that distinguished the novel-length adventures. This case book includes:Art in the Blood - An art show in downtown Erin, featuring the works of Kate McCabe and other female artists, goes horribly awry when murder stalks the gallery. The Revengers - Halloween finds Jeff Cody and Lynda Teal dressed as John Steed and Emma Peel. But before they get to the party, they find themselves in an Avengers-like mystery.Santa Crime - Sebastian McCabe, dressed as Santa Claus for a Christmas event at a local charity, finds himself acting more like Sherlock Holmes to solve a holiday theft.A Cold Case - House-hunting turns into a nightmare for the newly married Jeff and Lynda when a body turns up in the freezer chest of a house they'd like to call home.Dogs Don't Make Mistakes - Nobody would blame Jeff and Mac's friend Ashley Crutcher for shooting her estranged husband when he entered their home in the middle of the night. But she insists she didn't do it.PRAISE FOR ROGUE'S GALLERYDan Andriacco hits it out of the park with Rogues Gallery, a collection of short mystery stories featuring the two unlikely brothers-in-law and modern day Holmes and Watson of Sebastian McCabe and Jeff Cody. Narrator Cody is a sardonic, witty newlywed everyman while McCabe (rotund in the tradition of Nero Wolfe) is an avid, oddball Sherlockian with formidable powers of his own. Andriacco's distinctive tone delights - in a similar manner to the brilliant M.C.Beaton - with his combination of cozy, small town detail and hilarious and pointed observations of its denizens. The cozy elements are all in the settings, here including an all-female art show, Christmas and Halloween parties, college politics and the developing relations of Cody and his new bride as they navigate newlywed issues. But unlike many mysteries with cozy elements, Andriacco's plots are masterful. Like a skilled close-up magician, Andriacco lulls you into what appears to be quiet Midwestern sense of normalcy, only to turn up an ace from his sleeve with a murderous surprise. You're in the hands of a master of mystery plotting here. Rogues Gallery is a delightful read, hard to put down, and highly recommended. And did I say fun?- Hollywood screenwriter Bonnie MacBird, author of TRON

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】The Leaders of the Confederacy: The Lives and Legacies of Jefferson Davis, Robert E. Lee, and Stonewall Jackson (Illustrated Edition)【電子書籍】[ Charles River Editors ]
The Confederacy and its leaders continue to be the most popular topics of Civil War history, as historians attempt to analyze exactly why they lost, and how to attribute blame and success to its leaders. Foremost among the South's leaders were President Jefferson Davis and his two most popular and successful generals, Robert E. Lee and Stonewall Jackson. Jefferson Davis (1808-1889) holds a unique place in American history, as the man best remembered for being the president of the Confederacy during the Civil War. While other famous Confederates like Robert E. Lee and Stonewall Jackson are still celebrated across the reunited country, Davis continues to be the object of scorn, derided over his attempt to flee after the Civil War and criticized as ineffective by historians. Among the Confederates still lauded by todays Southerners, Davis is well down the list. With the exception of George Washington, perhaps the most famous general in American history is Robert E. Lee (January 19, 1807 October 12, 1870), despite the fact he led the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia against the Union in the Civil War. As the son of U.S. Revolutionary War hero Henry "Light Horse Harry" Lee III, and a relative of Martha Custis Washington, Lee was imbued with a strong sense of honor and duty from the beginning. And as a top graduate of West Point, Lee had distinguished himself so well before the Civil War that President Lincoln asked him to command the entire Union Army. Lee famously declined, serving his home state of Virginia instead after it seceded.Thomas Jonathan Jackson is one of the most famous generals of the Civil War, but many of the people he continues to fascinate probably dont remember his whole name. Thats because Jackson earned his famous Stonewall moniker at the First Battle of Manassas or Bull Run, when Brigadier-General Bee told his brigade to rally behind Jackson, whose men were standing like a stone wall. Ironically, its still unclear whether that was a compliment for standing strong or an insult for not moving his brigade, but the nickname stuck for the brigade and the general itself. The Leaders of the Confederacy: The Lives and Legacies of Jefferson Davis, Robert E. Lee, and Stonewall Jackson analyzes the lives of these three leaders, covering their career and examining their legacies. Along with pictures of the three men, and important people, places, and events in their lives, you will learn about the Leaders of the Confederacy like you never have before, in no time at all.

You ask me to tell you, my grandchildren, something about my own share in the great events that happened fifty years ago. 'Tis sad work turning back to that bitter page in our history, but you may perhaps take profit in your new homes from the lesson it teaches. For us in England it came too late. And yet we had plenty of warnings, if we had only made use of them. The danger did not come on us unawares. It burst on us suddenly, 'tis true; but its coming was foreshadowed plainly enough to open our eyes, if we had not been wilfully blind. We English have only ourselves to blame for the humiliation which has been brought on the land. Venerable old age! Dishonourable old age, I say, when it follows a manhood dishonoured as ours has been. I declare, even now, though fifty years have passed, I can hardly look a young man in the face when I think I am one of those in whose youth happened this degradation of Old England---one of those who betrayed the trust handed down to us unstained by our forefathers.
What a proud and happy country was this fifty years ago! Free-trade had been working for more than a quarter of a century, and there seemed to be no end to the riches it was bringing us. London was growing bigger and bigger; you could not build houses fast enough for the rich people who wanted to live in them, the merchants who made the money and came from all parts of the world to settle there, and the lawyers and doctors and engineers and other, and trades-people who got their share out of the profits. The streets reached down to Croydon and Wimbledon, which my father could remember quite country places; and people used to say that Kingston and Reigate would soon be joined to London. We thought we could go on building and multiplying for ever. 'Tis true that even then there was no lack of poverty; the people who had no money went on increasing as fast as the rich, and pauperism was already beginning to be a difficulty; but if the rates were high, there was plenty of money to pay them with; and as for what were called the middle classes, there really seemed no limit to their increase and prosperity. People in those days thought it quite a matter of course to bring a dozen of children into the world--or, as it used to be said, Providence sent them that number of babies; and if they couldn't always marry off all the daughters, they used to manage to provide for the sons, for there were new openings to be found in all the professions, or in the Government offices, which went on steadily getting larger. Besides, in those days young men could be sent out to India, or into the army or navy; and even then emigration was not uncommon, although not the regular custom it is now. Schoolmasters, like all other professional classes, drove a capital trade. They did not teach very much, to be sure, but new schools with their four or five hundred boys were springing up all over the country.

Gareth and Gwen's wedding plans will have to wait while the pair race to separate truth from lies, friends from foes, and unravel the mystery before King Owain--and his new bride--fall victim to their uninvited guest.

The Fourth Horseman: May 1144. Within moments of their arrival, however, the mission goes awry and a murder case drops (literally) at their feet.
