During the latter half of the 80s a new breed of guitar-orientated bands began to emerge in the UK - armed with an overt pop song craft sensibility, and enamoured with a conflicting post-punk spirit and adoration of the 60s, many of these unlikely acts - all anoraks, Dr Martens and charity shop chic - would go on to become Top 40 regulars and set the tone for music beyond these shores, culminating in 'The Stone Roses', an album that defined a generation. 'Cut Me Deep' - named for a Jasmine Minks track which captured that spirit - presents a snapshot of that time and place, via essential independent labels such as Creation, Sarah Records and 4AD, and their major backed counterparts in Blanco y Negro et al, alongside distribution via Rough Trade and other like-minded outlets. He them wrote hits for the likes of Rufus & Chaka Khan and Barry White, before signing with Clive Davis's Arista Records in 1977 and setting up the band Raydio as a vehicle for his songs. Ray was asked to provide the movie theme For GHOSTBUSTERS in 1984. The title song (Featured here in the rare 12" 'SEARCHIN' FOR THE SPIRIT' remix which makes it's CD debut on this collection) became not only Ray's biggest hit, but one of the highest earning pop singles of all time. 'Ghostbusters' (R&B #1/Pop #1/UK #2/IRE #4) made Ray Parker, Jr. a household name in almost every country in the world. He continued with Arista Records until he signed with Geffen in 1986. He rounded out his Arista tenure with a couple of final hits for the label in the form of 'Jamie' (R&B #12/Pop #14) and 'Girls Are More Fun' (R&B #21/Pop #34/UK #46). At Geffen he hit with 'I Don't Think That Man Should Sleep Alone' (R&B #5/Pop #68/UK #13) and his Burt Bacharach/Carole Bayer-Sager produced duet with Natalie Cole; 'Over You' (R&B #10/UK #65). Critics in the early 1970s called Gil Scott-Heron the most important Black voice since Martin Luther King Jr. And described him as a black Bob Dylan. His poetry is with much muscle, with stiletto humor, with street talk, much of it justifiably angry and accurate, the New York Times wrote in 1975, marveling at the angry man from the Bronx. No wonder that decades later Scott-Heron was celebrated as the Godfather of Rap. Born in Chicago, the musician, poet and pugnacious activist for human rights himself lived for years in the Bronx. Returning to his black roots, he died May 27, 2011, in New York's urban district Harlem. His legacy includes a fantastic concert Gil Scott-Heron gave with his band at the Schauburg Theater in Bremen (Germany) on April 18, 1983. The technicians of Radio Bremen were on site and recorded this ecstatic show, which will be released worldwide at the end of July as a 2CD and of course as download and streaming as well. Gil's son Rumal Rackley on the release of this concert: This album from a 1983 concert captures the spirit that permeated every performance throughout Gil Scott-Heron's travels in the US and abroad.
