Billie Holiday would have benefited greatly from such protection: during the more than twenty-five years of her career, Holiday gave an unknown number of live performances on TV & Radio and in clubs & concert halls, many of which were recorded both officially and unofficially by sound engineers, fellow musicians and fans. Today, ESP-Disck, which for many years has been assembling unofficial recordings of several artists from before 1972, has released one of the most comprehensive collections of live Billie Holiday recordings to date, some previously available but most not. These recordings, laid out in chronological order, not only demonstrate the arc of Holiday's development as a vocalist but give a rare behind-the-scenes look into how the singer approached her musicians and her audience. The first disc of this compilation opens with a twenty-year-old Billie Holiday performing with Duke Ellington in 1935, followed by a radio broadcast from the Savoy Hotel in New York two years later in which Holiday fronts the Count Basie Orchestra. The next four discs cover Holiday's career from 1949 to her death in 1959.(ビリーホリデイ)In 1972, thirteen years after her death, Congress extended copyright protections to include recorded musical performances. Formed at high school in Los Angeles, the group developed a style that was as R&B and rock 'n' roll as it was pure doowop. "Earth Angel" was their second release for the small Dootone label, and it topped the R&B charts, crossing over to reach No. 8 in the pop charts, where it was overtaken by the Crew Cuts' cover version. They moved to the Mercury label, and then to Atlantic, but could not repeat their chart success, despite releasing a string of top class R&B material under the aegis of their manager/producer Buck Ram, whom their shared with The Platters. After some line-up changes, the group eventually broke up in the early '60s. Coming to prominence in the pop charts as she did with the iconic hit "The End Of The World", many fans may well be unaware of the dues that she paid before that major success which saw her almost top the US pop charts. By the time that classic record was released towards the end of 1962 - it is in fact the last single to be featured in this collection - she had already had a significant career focused purely on the country market, recording initially with her friend Bette Jack Davis as The Davis Sisters and then, after a break of a couple of years, resuming her career as a solo artist in 1958. This great value 61-track 2-CD set comprises the A and B side of every single she released on RCA from her 1953 debut as part of The Davis Sisters and then as a solo artist through to the end of 1962, plus seven bonus tracks selected from her two solo albums from the period "I'll Sing You A Song And Harmonise Too" and "Here's The Answer", the latter trading on her success with "answer" records like her debut solo hit "Lost To A Geisha Girl", and the Top 5 hits "(I Can't Help You) I'm Falling Too", and "My Last Date With You". It features her 1953 debut country No. 1 as The Davis Sisters "I Forgot More Than You'll Ever Know", plus her twelve solo hits during the period, including the Top 10 successes "Set Him Free", "Optimistic" and "Where I Ought To Be", and ending with the classic "End of The World". It's a thorough overview of her first decade as a recording artist, which set the scene for a long and successful career.Country star Skeeter Davis enjoyed a chart career that lasted nearly a quarter of a century from the early '50s through to 1976, her personality and the quality of her voice enabling her to successfully adapt to the changing idioms within the genre. "Diana", which became one of the biggest hits of the year and began the extraordinary career of artist whose versatility has ensured continued success both as a singer and as a hugely successful songwriter. He racked up a string of hits through the late '50s and early '60s, most them self-penned, as he proved that his early success was no flash in the pan, and that his talent encompassed rock 'n' roll as well as dramatic ballads and sophisticated mood music. This great value 60-track 2-CD set comprises the A and B sides of every single he released in the USA and UK during those frenetic first few years of his career, the success he was enjoying measured by the fact that thirty-five of those tracks registered in either the US or UK charts, his major hits, including "Lonely Boy", "I Love You Baby", "You Are My Destiny" and "Put Your Head On My Shoulder". He began his singing career in his teens, performing on local TV shows in his home state of Florida, and winning talent contests which took him to Nashville where he was spotted by talent scouts leading to deal with the Cadence label in 1958 as he turned 20. His first four singles all achieved minor chart placings but it was the classic "Poetry In Motion" which kick-started his career in a big way, leading to further memorable Top 10 successes like "Without You" and his first venture into country-flavoured material, his own song "It Keeps Right On A-Hurtin'". This 2-CD set comprises all the A and B sides of his singles from his debut through to the end of 1962, as well as all the tracks from his first two albums "Johnny Tillotson's Best" & "It Keeps Right on A-Hurtin'", and titles from the Cadence compilation albums "Rock-a-Ballads" & "Rock-a-Hits", which were not otherwise released on his singles or albums. It naturally includes all his fourteen US chart entries from this era. After signing to RCA in 1949, their producer suggested developing their style by recording parodies of well-known pop and country hits, and they immediately struck a chord with their re-working of composer Frank Loesser's "Baby, It's Cold Outside". Over the next dozen years or so they remained consistently popular on radio and TV with this approach, and focused much of their recorded output in this direction. This great-value 58-track 2-CD set brings together selected A & B sides of their releases on RCA from this era, mostly comprising their trademark parody and comic performances. It features all their country and pop chart entries on RCA from these years, including the Top 10 hits "Baby It's Cold Outside" and "How Much Is That Hound Dog In The Window", and the Top 20 hits "Hernando's Hideaway" and "The Battle Of Kookamunga". They represented a highly individual and idiosyncratic strand of country music, cornering the market as just about the only practitioners of this particular art, and this collection offers a showcase not only for their unusual material but also for their finely-honed skills as instrumentalists and harmony vocalists.Homer and Jethro were a country duo, real names Henry Haynes and Kenneth Burns, with their musical roots in hillbilly and bluegrass, who worked together on radio in the 1930s and reunited after service in WWII to perform again on radio, developing an act which featured exaggerated hillbilly comedic routines. The Arthur Godfrey success led to a recording contract with RCA, with whom she stayed until she signed to Mercury in 1958 and then to United Artists in 1962. It naturally features all her career chart entries, including the Top 10 hits "Crying In The Chapel" and "I Understand", as well as her charted versions of big hit songs of the time, "Unchained Melody" and "The Wedding". Despite his tragic death in a 'plane crash in 1964, he was nevertheless able to rack up nearly 50 hits during his lifetime and became one of the most influential personalities in country music in the post-war era. This great-value 80-track 3-CD set comprises the A & B sides of all his singles from his recording debut for the Macy's label in 1949 through to 1962, and includes his recordings for the Abbott and RCA labels during those years, plus a duet performance with Ginny Wright released on the Fabor label. It naturally features all his 37 pop and country hits from the era, including the No. 1s "Mexican Joe", "Bimbo", "Billy Bayou", "Four Walls" and the international smash hit "He'll Have To Go", which provided his UK chart breakthrough in 1960. Covering, as it does, the first 15 years or so of his career, it charts the development of his style and sound during an era when country music was becoming more consciously commercial, and experienced the impact of the rock 'n' roll explosion in the mid-'50s, following it through into the early years of a decade when he very much flew the flag for country music as the British Invasion brought about more musical changes. It's a fine showcase for one of the genre's most enduring stars.Jim Reeves - widely known as "Gentleman Jim" - was one of the most successful and important country artists of the 1950s and early '60s, his rich, velvet voice bringing a unique sound and style, which was in the vanguard of the "new Nashville" sound, as the music headed away from honky-tonk fiddles and steel guitars as introduced strings and backing choruses, helping to move the genre towards the pop mainstream. Just sixty cents for adults (thirty for kids) bought the finest night's entertainment anytime, anywhere. This set is a front-row seat as Hank Williams takes to the stage, first as a relative newcomer and later as a troubled superstar. Elvis Presley brings rockabilly to the airwaves before anyone knew what he or his music was about. A parade of home-grown and out-of-town country hitmakers tussle with one another for encores, and encourage unknown newcomers who would wow the audience with their songs and performances most nights. These long-buried musical performances are brought to life in chronological order interspersed with some of the announcements, intros, ads, comedy routines and mistakes that went to make up a live show in those days. Not least, we can hear Elvis Presley's epoch-changing music as it was originally heard-as part of a country variety show. At The Louisiana Hayride Tonight - Eighteen CDs chronicle the weekly Hayride. Two bonus CDs sample some of the post-1960 shows together with commercial recordings made in the KWKH radio studios, promotional discs and transcribed shows from KWKH's early days. These 20 CDs comprise over 25 hours of music captured on-stage in the 1940s, '50s, and '60s at KWKH's legendary Louisiana Hayride radio show. At The Louisiana Hayride Tonight - Staged live in Shreveport, the Hayride featured national country music stars, soon-to-be legends, regional break-outs, and talented newcomers.Time was when the Louisiana Hayride show at the Municipal Auditorium in Shreveport, Louisiana was the place for country music fans to be on a Saturday night. They are regarded as one of the genre's very best and most talented groups, and Billboard magazine wrote of them: "Universally hailed as one of the finest and most influential vocal groups in pop music history, the Flamingos defined doo wop at it's most elegant and sophisticated." Like so many of their peers, they suffered from the fact that one of their biggest R&B hits was covered for the pop market by a mainstream artist - in their case, it was Pat Boone recording their landmark song "I'll Be Home" to score a pop No. 1. This great value 80-track 3-CD set comprises almost all the titles which they release during this primary period of their career, and comprises all their A & B sides released on the Chance, Parrot, Checker, Decca and End labels along with the tracks from their first three LPs "The Flamingos", "Flamingo Serenade" and "Flamingo Favourites" which were not otherwise released on singles. It naturally includes all the dozen or so hits they had during this time, including "I'll Be Home", and their biggest pop hit "I Only Have Eyes For You". Including substantial booklet notes, this provides an entertaining overview of their most important work, ranging with ease across R&B, rock 'n' roll and ballad styles, and is a worthy showcase for their distinctive talent. The Flamingos were one of the many doowop vocal groups of the 1950s whose group name was borrowed from that of a bird - The Robins, The Penguins, The Orioles and The Ravens were among the others. She enjoyed a successful career recording primarily as a solo artist, but also occasionally with Lawrence, making the successful transition into the post rock 'n' roll era, as she had hits in both the USA and UK from 1956 into the '60s, her chart success with her husband coming beyond the scope of this anthology. This excellent-value 56-track 2-CD set comprises selected A & B sides from her 40 or so solo singles on the Coral, ABC-Paramount and Columbia labels during these years, excluding duet performances with Steve Lawrence. Features all her ten solo US and UK chart entries from this era, including the Top 20 hits "You Need Hands", a US No. 11, "Yes My Darling Daughter", a UK No. 10, and "Blame It On The Bossa Nova", a US No. 7. It showcases her ability to range across the music spectrum from sophisticated big band material to upbeat pop, and provides a substantial and entertaining overview of this key first decade of her career.A traditional pop singer in the classic early '50s mould, Eydie Gorme, born Edith Gormezano, started her career singing with big bands at the start of the 1950s before signing as a solo singer with the Coral label and forming a partnership on US TV's 'Tonight Show' with her future husband Steve Lawrence. She was very much part of the middle-of-the-road pop scene of the early '50s, making her debut with a No. 5 hit with "If I Knew You Were Coming I'd 've Baked You A Cake" in 1950 and had a No. 1 with the dramatic "Kiss Of Fire" the following year. She gained a certain degree of notoriety during the mid-'50s when she became one of the mainstream white pop artists to achieve chart success by recording cover versions of big hits from the R&B charts, scoring a No. 2 with a version of Lavern Baker's "Tweedle-Dee" and a No. 1 with a cover of Etta James' "The Wallflower" as "Dance With Me Henry". By the end of the '50s she had racked up an impressive 34 chart entries. This great-value 56-track 2-CD covers the era from her recording debut in 1946 through to the time when her music had largely been overtaken by the rock 'n' roll era and it's aftermath, and includes early recordings for the Majestic label, which illustrate her musical roots, plus subsequent releases on the Coral, Mercury, RCA and Roulette labels, and naturally features all her hits, plus selected A & B sides which amply illustrate her remarkable talent to perform across the pop spectrum with aplomb.Georgia Gibbs was a singer whose background was in jazz and big bands during the 1940s, but who was so astonishingly versatile that she was able to turn her hand to just about any kind of music with equal panache and credibility and as a result built an extraordinary hit career that brought her well over thirty hits during her career. Intuitive and innovative, he used his baton as an artist would use a brush, and his orchestra as a palette to paint vivid musical pictures which would help change the face of popular recorded music. This comprehensive 107-track collection trace s his career with the Decca, Majestic and, most famously, Columbia labels from 1944 to 1959, showcasing his unique arranging and conducting artistry as he recorded not only with his own orchestra and chorus, but also a host of big name vocalists, the success of whose records often owed more than a little to Faith's orchestrations. It's not only a worthy tribute to skilled practitioner whose work has generally not received the attention it certainly merits, but also a thoroughly entertaining trawl through some great popular music of the post-war era.Among the top popular light music composers, arrangers and conductors of the Forties, Fifties and Sixties, Percy Faith must rate up there with the very best. She celebrated her 80th birthday in January 2107, and to mark the occasion Acrobat is releasing this 108-track 5CD set which comprises all her singles (A & B sides), plus all her album and EP tracks, released during the period. It naturally includes all her hits during that time, notably her No. 1s with "As I Love You", "Climb Ev'ry Mountain" and "Reach For The Stars", and her other Top 10 successes "The Banana Boat Song", "Kiss Me, Honey Honey, Kiss Me", "As Long As He Needs Me", "You'll Never Know", and "What Now My Love". All the tracks from the albums "The Bewitching Miss Bassey", "Born to Sing the Blues", "The Fabulous Shirley Bassey", "Shirley", "Shirley Bassey" and "Let's Face The Music" (recorded in the USA with Nelson Riddle) are included, along with the rarely-heard1957 EP "Live At The CafAc Paris" and the "Till And "Other Great Songs". It's a thorough overview of her formative career, and a fine commemorative tribute to a unique talent.Dame Shirley Bassey is one of the most universally loved and admired artists on the British showbiz scene, her voice, personality, glamour and sheer star quality transcending any barriers between genres and generations, evidenced by her rapturously received headlining appearance at the 2007 Glastonbury Festival, when she had her most recent Top 50 hit, half a century after her chart debut.
