Die Funktion des Fernsehens als Ware ist zwar f?r die Macher, die dieses Wirtschaftsgut herstellen und anbieten - vor allem des kommerziell ausgerichteten Privatfernsehens - vorrangig, doch ist Fernsehen weit mehr, n?mlich soziales Kommunikationsmittel bzw. Kommunikationsforum. Die bekannte Aussage des Literaturkritikers Marcel Reich-Ranicki, das Fernsehen mache 'die Dummen d?mmer und die Klugen kl?ger', stellt die bewusst provokant gew?hlte These der Arbeit dar. Mittlerweile 25 Jahre her ist die Ver?ffentlichung, in der Aktualit?t hat das Thema dagegen nichts eingeb??t, ganz im Gegenteil. Der Beinahe-Tod eines Wettkandidaten in der Unterhaltungsshow 'Wetten, dass...' wirft die Thematik Postmans in ein ganz neues Licht und gibt ihr eine bedenkliche Tragweite, hat mit dem Titel des Buches in seiner urspr?nglichen Bedeutung jedoch weniger zu tun. Die vorliegende Arbeit m?chte die Thesen und Beobachtungen Postmans, die er ?ber das Medium Fernsehen in den Vereinigten Staaten angestellt hat, wiedergeben und sie auf ihre G?ltigkeit f?r das heutige deutsche Fernsehen hin untersuchen. Dazu werden exemplarisch im zweiten Teil der Ausarbeitung eine Ausgabe der 'Tagesschau' der ARD sowie des RTL-Pendants 'RTL Aktuell' auf die Fragestellung hin analysiert, ob sie als reine Nachrichtensendungen bezeichnet werden k?nnen oder ob sie dem Unterhaltungssektor zuzuordnen sind. Der erste Teil der Arbeit beinhaltet f?r das Verst?ndnis des Themas wichtige, mitunter geschichtliche Hintergr?nde, die die Dimension der sich ver?ndernden Medien bis hin zum Fernsehen verst?ndlich machen m?chten. Teilweise werden dabei Parallelen zu in Deutschland anzutreffenden Ph?nomenen gezogen, die entweder die Richtigkeit der Thesen Postmans unterstreichen sollen oder bei Bedarf Beobachtungen des Wissenschaftlers als f?r Deutschland nicht zutreffend widerlegen. Auf die zunehmende 'Boulevardisierung' der Medien wird in dieser Arbeit nur deshalb nicht eingegangen, weil die analysierten Nachrichtensendungen gen?gend anderes Material ergeben und dieses Ph?nomen mehr in den Printmedien sowie anderen Fernsehformaten anzutreffen ist. Die Wettervorhersagen sind zwar fester Bestandteil der Nachrichten, bilden aber eine eigene Kategorie.
