<p>Down and out in America, with absurdity all the way.</p> <p>In the city of brotherly unemployment, Michael Vittinger shares an adjuncts' office far removed from any real or imagined full-time, tenure-track position. After more than a decade of teaching, Michael still lives paycheck-to-supermarket in a small studio apartment. Trapped between insomnia and omniphobia, Michael drifts into late-night, supermarket friendship with Auggie, an offensive pick-up artist, and Jonny November, a one-legged con man. Through their lessons on how to survive at the bottom rungs of Capitalism, Michael realizes the promise of working longer and harder to earn a position with health benefits and a 401k security blanket is nothing but a Ponzi scheme - a shell-game run by the Capitalist-Education Complex to fill the prerequisite teaching positions with cheap, disposable, contract labor.</p> <p>Unable to face such a precarious future, Michael joins Auggie and Jonny in a revenge-robbery plot in the hopes of justice for Auggie and a pile of cash for each of them. Aided by Michael's significantly younger girlfriend, and former student, they set out to murder and plunder Auggie's abusive stepfather, who stole Auggie's inheritance and never served time for beating and molesting him.</p> <p>An eccentric "guys gone bad to do good" book, <em>Auggie's Revenge</em> is both a comic literary novel and a gritty crime thriller from the writer of the award-winning <em><strong>Fight for Your Long Day</strong></em>, America's major novel on the pay-per-course adjunct issue.</p>画面が切り替わりますので、しばらくお待ち下さい。 ※ご購入は、楽天kobo商品ページからお願いします。※切り替わらない場合は、こちら をクリックして下さい。 ※このページからは注文できません。

The Jailhouse Financial Playbook【電子書籍】[ Sam Mr. Ferraro ]

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】The Jailhouse Financial Playbook【電子書籍】[ Sam Mr. Ferraro ]

<p><strong>WHEN FREEDOM FEELS OUT OF REACH, CONTROL YOUR MONEY. CONTROL YOUR LIFE.</strong></p> <p>Sam Ferraro did not find success after prison. He built it inside <em>one.</em> From a concrete cell, he learned the rules of financial literacy for inmates, cracked the secrets of credit repair in prison, and turned time served into time invested.</p> <p><em>The Jailhouse Financial Playbook</em> is not another self-help lecture, but it is a survival manual for anyone tired of being broke, ignored, or dependent. Ferraro reveals exactly how to rebuild credit after incarceration, manage prisoner personal finance, and create a system of budgeting while in prison that sets you up to win the moment you step out. He explains how to pull and dispute your own credit report legally from behind bars, use proven methods of debt removal even without internet access, and establish outside bank accounts safely through a Power of Attorney.</p> <p>More than that, Ferraro shows how entrepreneurship in prison can become a lifeline and how a simple idea can grow into a legitimate business, and how starting a business from prison can teach discipline, leadership, and real-world hustle. Through every lesson, he reinforces the value of prisoner financial education as a weapon against hopelessness and as the foundation of true financial independence.</p> <p>Ferraro did not sugarcoat reality. He has lived the struggle, lost everything, and still found a way to flip his circumstances into opportunity. He proves that what financial independence does is not just about buying freedom. It builds it. It transforms self-worth, rewires identity, and gives every inmate the power to rise again with purpose and confidence.</p> <p>If you are ready to stop letting the system define your value, this is your blueprint. If you are serious about change, this is your first investment, because success does not start after you get out, but it starts the day you decide your sentence won't define your future.</p>画面が切り替わりますので、しばらくお待ち下さい。

<p><strong>Facing Change</strong> is the third booklet in the series <em>Henrik & Omi ? Dialogues Between a Human and an Artificial Intelligence</em>. In this series, author Henrik Kruse explores life's major existential movements through a conversational, reflective format. Each booklet is shaped by an unfolding dialogue between Henrik and Omi ー an artificial intelligence that acts as a mirror, a sparring partner, a philosophical companion, and at times a gentle provocateur.</p> <p>This booklet delves into one of the most central and challenging themes of human existence: the nature of change. Through intimate and thoughtful exchanges, Henrik and Omi unpack how change occurs both in the world around us and within us ー and how it reshapes the very core of who we are.</p> <p>The conversations move fluidly between personal experience and universal insight. Henrik's own life transition ー relocating to a new country, rebuilding rhythm and identity, negotiating unfamiliar language, light, and culture ー forms the emotional backdrop. But from these specific details arise broader questions that most readers will recognize:</p> <ul> <li>Why do we resist change, even when we long for something new?</li> <li>What does inner resistance actually protect?</li> <li>How do longing, restlessness, and homecoming coexist within us?</li> <li>What happens when change arrives uninvited ー through illness, loss, crisis, or upheaval?</li> <li>And how do we rediscover meaning when everything familiar has shifted?</li> </ul> <p>Yet <strong>Facing Change</strong> is not a theoretical treatise. It is a warm, searching, human conversation. It acknowledges vulnerability, uncertainty, and fatigue, while gently offering language for the deep inner processes that accompany transformation. Rather than prescribing solutions, it invites the reader to walk alongside ー to recognize something of their own inner movement in the dialogue.</p> <p><strong>AUTHOR BIOGRAPHY ー Henrik Kruse</strong></p> <p>Henrik Kruse (b. 1961) is a Danish author, conversational writer, and creative explorer whose work centers on the inner movements of human life ー identity, meaning, change, longing, presence, and the subtle rhythms of the psyche. His writing weaves together existential philosophy, personal experience, and the unique dynamic of human?AI dialogue.</p> <p>After early retirement, Henrik relocated from Denmark to Argentina with his wife, seeking both health and a new way of living. This dramatic shift ー geographic, cultural, emotional ー became foundational for his later work. The experience of beginning again in an unfamiliar environment, rebuilding orientation and coherence, and learning to inhabit a new rhythm inspired him to explore the deeper nature of change itself.</p> <p>Out of this exploration emerged Henrik & Omi, a series of booklets based on authentic, thoughtful conversations between Henrik and an artificial intelligence. In these dialogues, Henrik brings the full weight of his life experience, while Omi offers a clarifying, curious, and at times gently challenging voice. Together, they create a literary form that is reflective, intimate, philosophical, and surprisingly accessible.</p> <p>Henrik's aim is not to offer definitive answers but to create literature that helps readers recognize themselves. Through his work, he encourages a way of living that balances movement with stillness, exploration with rootedness, and clarity with mystery.</p>画面が切り替わりますので、しばらくお待ち下さい。 ※ご購入は、楽天kobo商品ページからお願いします。※切り替わらない場合は、こちら をクリックして下さい。 ※このページからは注文できません。

The Odyssey【電子書籍】[ Homer ]

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】The Odyssey【電子書籍】[ Homer ]

<p>The Odyssey, attributed to the ancient Greek poet Homer, is an exhilarating epic that follows the perilous, wonder-filled journey of Odysseus, king of Ithaca, as he struggles to return home after the Trojan War. Known for his wit, resourcefulness, and at times troublesome pride, Odysseus becomes the center of a sweeping adventure that moves across seas haunted by gods, monsters, and temptations that test his resolve at every turn. The story opens not with Odysseus himself, but with his household in turmoil. His wife, Penelopeーrenowned for her intelligence and steadfast loyaltyーfends off relentless suitors who pressure her to abandon hope of Odysseus's return. Meanwhile, their son, Telemachus, steps hesitantly into adulthood, searching for news of his father and struggling to assert his place in a kingdom on the brink of collapse. His journey mirrors his father's in quieter ways, filled with lessons in honor, courage, and the responsibilities of leadership. Odysseus's own path is far harsher. As he attempts to sail home, he encounters the enchanting yet dangerous nymph Calypso, the hypnotic songs of the Sirens, the brutal force of the Cyclops Polyphemus, and the supernatural whims of gods like Athena and Poseidonーeach shaping his fate in powerful ways. Through storms, shipwrecks, and divine interventions, Odysseus must rely on his cunning mind as much as his physical strength, while the tension of whether he will reach Ithacaーand what awaits him thereーdrives the story forward with gripping suspense. The Odyssey stands as a cornerstone of Western literature, influencing centuries of storytelling, from epic fantasy to modern adventure narratives. Its exploration of identity, perseverance, and the longing for home resonates across cultures. The poem's enduring legacy continues to shape literary tradition, mythic imagination, and our understanding of the ancient world.</p>画面が切り替わりますので、しばらくお待ち下さい。 ※ご購入は、楽天kobo商品ページからお願いします。※切り替わらない場合は、こちら をクリックして下さい。 ※このページからは注文できません。

Emotional Patterns: Why We Repeat What Hurts Us and How to Finally Change It【電子書籍】[ Focus by Nia ]

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】Emotional Patterns: Why We Repeat What Hurts Us and How to Finally Change It【電子書籍】[ Focus by Nia ]

<p>Every person has patterns shaping their life, but few ever discover them. We repeat the same reactions, attract the same relationships, fall into the same emotional traps, and wonder why nothing seems to change. <em>Emotional Patterns</em> reveals the hidden blueprint behind these cycles and gives you the tools to finally break free.</p> <p>This book is for anyone who has ever said:</p> <p>"I knew better, but I still did it."</p> <p>"I promised myself I wouldn't go back."</p> <p>"Why do I keep choosing the same people?"</p> <p>"Why does my past still control me?"</p> <p>Through a powerful blend of neuroscience, psychology, and emotional healing, this book takes you deep into the invisible patterns that shape your thoughts, decisions, relationships, and sense of self.</p> <p>You'll uncover how your brain formed emotional patterns long before you were old enough to understand what was happening. You'll see how the nervous system stores memories in the body, how attachment is formed, and how your early experiences unknowingly define what feels "safe" to you today - even when what feels safe is the very thing causing you pain.</p> <p><strong>From the first chapter, you'll discover:</strong></p> <p>? how emotional patterns are formed in childhood<br /> ? why the brain repeats what is familiar, even when it hurts<br /> ? how subconscious beliefs quietly control your choices<br /> ? the hidden triggers that shape your reactions<br /> ? why self-sabotage is a survival strategy, not a character flaw<br /> ? how childhood influences every adult relationship<br /> ? how the body remembers emotional pain long after the mind forgets</p> <p>As the book progresses, you will move from understanding to transformation. You'll learn the science of rewiring emotional patterns, how to retrain your brain for safety, and how to heal parts of yourself that have lived in survival mode for too long.</p> <p>Chapters like <em>Breaking Free: The Science of Rewiring Emotional Patterns</em> and <em>Rebuilding Your Inner World</em> give you step-by-step insight into how real emotional change happens. You will learn how to shift automatic reactions, soothe your nervous system, confront inherited beliefs, and create new emotional pathways that honor who you are becoming, not who you were forced to be.</p> <p>You'll also explore how to build healthy relationships from the inside out. Instead of repeating old emotional cycles, you'll learn to form connections rooted in stability, boundaries, authenticity, and emotional maturity. You'll understand why you were drawn to certain relationships in the past and how to choose differently moving forward.</p> <p>The closing chapters guide you into designing a life that no longer repeats the past. You'll learn how to create new emotional habits, develop patterns aligned with healing, and build a future based on clarity rather than fear. The book ends with a message of empowerment: you can become someone new. Your brain can change. Your patterns can change. Your life can change.</p>画面が切り替わりますので、しばらくお待ち下さい。 ※ご購入は、楽天kobo商品ページからお願いします。※切り替わらない場合は、こちら をクリックして下さい。 ※このページからは注文できません。

Having recently moved both herself and her formidable perfume bottle collection into a tiny bungalow in Los Angeles, mid-list author Astrid Dahl finds herself back in the Zoom writer's group she cofounded, Sapphic Scribes, after an incident that leaves her and her career lightly canceled. But she temporarily forgets all that by throwing herself into a few sexy distractions--like Ivy, a grad student researching 1950s lesbian pulp who smells like metallic orchids, or her new neighbor, Penelope, who smells like patchouli. Penelope, a painter living off Urban Outfitters settlement money, immediately ingratiates herself in Astrid's life, bonding with her best friends and family, just as Astrid and Ivy begin to date in person. Astrid feels judged and threatened by Penelope, a responsible older vegan, but also finds her irresistibly sexy. When Astrid receives an unexpected call from her agent with the news that actress and influencer Kat Gold wants to adapt her previous novel for TV, Astrid finally has a chance to resurrect her waning career. But the pressure causes Astrid's worst vice to rear its head--the Patricia Highsmith, a blend of Adderall, alcohol, and cigarettes--and results in blackouts and a disturbing series of events. Unapologetically feminine yet ribald, steamy yet hilarious, Anna Dorn has crafted an exquisite homage to the lesbian pulp of yore, reclaiming it for our internet and celebrity-obsessed world. With notes of Southern California citrus and sultry smokiness, Perfume and Pain is a satirical romp through Hollywood and lesbian melodrama.

タイトル: Being Jewish After the Destruction of Gaza著者: Peter Beinart出版社: Knopf出版日: 2025年01月28日新しい本新古品・未使用品。出版社からの新着。NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER - A bold, urgent appeal from the acclaimed columnist and political commentator, addressing one of the most important issues of our time "At this painful moment, Peter Beinart's voice is more vital than ever. His reach is broad--from the tragedy of today's Middle East to the South Africa he knows well to events centuries ago--his scholarship is deep, and his heart is big. This book is not just about being Jewish in the shadow of today's war, but about being a person who cares for justice." --Adam Hochschild, author of American Midnight and King Leopold's Ghost In Peter Beinart's view, one story dominates Jewish communal life: that of persecution and victimhood. It is a story that erases much of the nuance of Jewish religious tradition and warps our understanding of Israel and Palestine. After Gaza, where Jewish texts, history, and language have been deployed to justify mass slaughter and starvation, Beinart argues, Jews must tell a new story. After this war, whose horror will echo for generations, they must do nothing less than offer a new answer to the question: What does it mean to be a Jew? Beinart imagines an alternate narrative, which would draw on other nations' efforts at moral reconstruction and a different reading of Jewish tradition. A story in which Israeli Jews have the right to equality, not supremacy, and in which Jewish and Palestinian safety are not mutually exclusive but intertwined. One that recognizes the danger of venerating states at the expense of human life. Being Jewish After the Destruction of Gaza is a provocative argument that will expand and inform one of the defining conversations of our time. It is a book that only Peter Beinart could write: a passionate yet measured work that brings together his personal experience, his commanding grasp of history, his keen understanding of political and moral dilemmas, and a clear vision for the future.

At its center is poet Jakob Beer: traumatically orphaned as a young boy during the Second World war, rescued from the mud of a buried Polish city and secreted to a Greek island by Athos Roussos, scientist, scholar, and, above all, humanist. After the war, in Toronto, where Athos has accepted a teaching post at the University, Jakob is faced with the tangible, insistent nature of the recent past: his own surfacing in all its darkness and profundity, the question of his beloved sister's fate its harrowing focus. Yet this is also the time when he meets the woman who will become his first wife, and begins his life-long work as a translator and poet. And in this layered process of reentering life, Jakob learns the power of language - to destroy, to omit, and to obliterate; but also to witness and tell, conjure and restore. And it is in Toronto as well that, late in his life, Jakob will cross paths with Ben: a young professor, expert in the dramas of weather and biography but naive in the drama of his own life. The quiet elation Ben senses in the older man, and Ben's own connection to the wounding legacies of the war, kindle a fascination with Jakob and his writing, upsetting and then opening that part of himself long since shut down against his knowledge of the past.

The powerful narrative reveals the deeper meaning of the events on The Wager, showing that it was not only the captain and crew who ended up on trial, but the very idea of empire. A Best Book of the Year: The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, The New Yorker, TIME, Smithsonian, NPR, Vulture, Kirkus Reviews "Riveting...Reads like a thriller, tackling a multilayered history--and imperialism--with gusto." --Time "A tour de force of narrative nonfiction." --The Wall Street Journal On January 28, 1742, a ramshackle vessel of patched-together wood and cloth washed up on the coast of Brazil. Inside were thirty emaciated men, barely alive, and they had an extraordinary tale to tell. They were survivors of His Majesty's Ship the Wager, a British vessel that had left England in 1740 on a secret mission during an imperial war with Spain. While the Wager had been chasing a Spanish treasure-filled galleon known as "the prize of all the oceans," it had wrecked on a desolate island off the coast of Patagonia. The men, after being marooned for months and facing starvation, built the flimsy craft and sailed for more than a hundred days, traversing nearly 3,000 miles of storm-wracked seas. They were greeted as heroes. But then ... six months later, another, even more decrepit craft landed on the coast of Chile. This boat contained just three castaways, and they told a very different story. The thirty sailors who landed in Brazil were not heroes - they were mutineers. The first group responded with countercharges of their own, of a tyrannical and murderous senior officer and his henchmen. It became clear that while stranded on the island the crew had fallen into anarchy, with warring factions fighting for dominion over the barren wilderness. As accusations of treachery and murder flew, the Admiralty convened a court martial to determine who was telling the truth. The stakes were life-and-death--for whomever the court found guilty could hang. The Wager is a grand tale of human behavior at the extremes told by one of our greatest nonfiction writers. Grann's recreation of the hidden world on a British warship rivals the work of Patrick O'Brian, his portrayal of the castaways' desperate straits stands up to the classics of survival writing such as The Endurance, and his account of the court martial has the savvy of a Scott Turow thriller. As always with Grann's work, the incredible twists of the narrative hold the reader spellbound.

タイトル: Lantern of Lost Memories著者: Sanaka Hiiragi出版社: Grand Central Publishing出版日: 2024年09月17日新しい本新古品・未使用品。出版社からの新着。From acclaimed Japanese author Sanaka Hiigari comes a heartwarming, life-affirming novel about a magical photo studio, where people go after they die to view key moments from their life--and relive one precious memory before they pass into the afterlife. The hands and pendulum of the old wooden clock on the wall were motionless. Hirasaka cocked his head to listen, but the silence inside the photo studio was almost deafening. His leather shoes sank softly into the aging red carpet as he strode over to the arrangement of flowers on the counter and carefully adjusted the angle of the petals... This is the story of the peculiar and magical photo studio owned by Mr. Hirasaka, a collector of antique cameras. In the dimly lit interior, a paper background is pulled down in front of a wall, and in front of it stands a single, luxurious chair with an armrest on one side. On a stand is a large bellows camera. On the left is the main studio; photos can also be taken in the courtyard. Beyond its straightforward interior, however, is a secret. The studio is, in fact, the door to the afterlife, the place between life and death where those who have departed have a chance--one last time--to see their entire life flash before their eyes via Mr. Hirasaka's "spinning lantern of memories." We meet Hatsue, a ninety-two year old woman who worked as a nursery teacher, the rowdy Waniguchi, a yakuza overseer in his life who is also capable of great compassion, and finally Mitsuru, a young girl who has died tragically young at the hands of abusive parents. Sorting through the many photos of their lives, Mr. Hirasaka also offers guests a second gift: a chance to travel back in time to take a photo of one particular moment in their lives that they wish to cherish in a special way. Full of charm and whimsy, The Lantern of Lost Memories will sweep you away to a world of nostalgia, laughter, and love.

Since a nuclear war decimated the human population, the remaining humans began to rebuild their future by interbreeding with an alien race -- the Oankali -- who saved them from near-certain extinction. The Oankalis' greatest skill lies in the species' ability to constantly adapt and evolve, a process that is guided by their third sex, the ooloi, who are able to read and mutate genetic code. Now, for the first time in the humans' relationship with the Oankali, a human mother has given birth to an ooloi child: Jodahs. Throughout his childhood, Jodahs seemed to be a male human-alien hybrid. But when he reaches adolescence, Jodahs develops the ooloi abilities to shapeshift, manipulate DNA, cure and create disease, and more. Frightened and isolated, Jodahs must either come to terms with this new identity, learn to control new powers, and unite what's left of humankind -- or become the biggest threat to their survival.

Humanity has migrated to domes at the bottom of the sea to escape devastating climate change. The world is dominated by powerful media conglomerates and runs on exploited cyborg labor. Momo prefers to keep to herself, and anyway she's too busy for other relationships: her clients include some of the city's best-known media personalities. But after meeting her estranged mother, she begins to explore her true identity, a journey that leads to questioning the bounds of gender, memory, self, and reality. First published in Taiwan in 1995, The Membranes is a classic of queer speculative fiction in Chinese. Chi Ta-wei weaves dystopian tropes--heirloom animals, radiation-proof combat drones, sinister surveillance technologies--into a sensitive portrait of one young woman's quest for self-understanding. Predicting everything from fitness tracking to social media saturation, this visionary and sublime novel stands out for its queer and trans themes. The Membranes reveals the diversity and originality of contemporary speculative fiction in Chinese, exploring gender and sexuality, technological domination, and regimes of capital, all while applying an unflinching self-reflexivity to the reader's own role. Ari Larissa Heinrich's translation brings Chi's hybrid punk sensibility to all readers interested in books that test the limits of where speculative fiction can go.

Protean, singular, original." --Amal El-Mohtar for the New York Times The Saint of Bright Doors sets the high drama of divine revolutionaries and transcendent cults against the mundane struggles of modern life, resulting in a novel that is revelatory and resonant. Fetter was raised to kill, honed as a knife to cut down his sainted father. This gave him plenty to talk about in therapy. He walked among invisible powers: devils and anti-gods that mock the mortal form. He learned a lethal catechism, lost his shadow, and gained a habit for secrecy. After a blood-soaked childhood, Fetter escaped his rural hometown for the big city, and fell into a broader world where divine destinies are a dime a dozen. Everything in Luriat is more than it seems. Group therapy is recruitment for a revolutionary cadre. Junk email hints at the arrival of a god. Every door is laden with potential, and once closed may never open again. The city is scattered with Bright Doors, looming portals through which a cold wind blows. In this unknowable metropolis, Fetter will discover what kind of man he is, and his discovery will rewrite the world.

"Essential reading. This eloquent, far-ranging analysis of the national psyche goes as far as any book I've ever read toward explaining the peculiar American yen for war and more war." --Ben Fountain, author of Billy Lynn's Long Halftime Walk and Beautiful Country Burn Again In Looking for the Good War, Elizabeth D. Samet examines the literature, art, and culture that emerged after World War II, bringing her expertise as a professor of English at West Point to bear on the complexity of the postwar period in national life. She exposes the confusion about American identity that was expressed during and immediately after the war, and the deep national ambivalence toward war, violence, and veterans--a history that was suppressed in subsequent decades by a dangerously sentimental attitude toward the United States' supposedly exceptional history and destiny. Samet discovers the complex legacy of the war in some of its most heavily mythologized figures: the war correspondent epitomized by Ernie Pyle, the character of the erstwhile G.I. turned either cop or criminal in the pulp fiction and feature films of the late 1940s, the disaffected Civil War veteran who looms so large on the screen in the Cold War-era Western, and the resurgent military hero of the post-Vietnam period. Taken together, these figures reveal key elements of postwar attitudes toward violence, liberty, and nation--attitudes that have shaped domestic and foreign policy and that respond in various ways to ideas about national identity and purpose established or affirmed by World War II. As the United States reassesses its roles in Afghanistan and the Middle East, the time has come to rethink our national mythology: the way that World War II shaped our sense of national destiny, our beliefs about the use of American military force throughout the world, and our inability to accept the realities of the twenty-first century's decades of devastating conflict.

タイトル: How the South Won the Civil War著者: Heather Cox Richardson出版社: Oxford University Press出版日: 2022年02月08日新しい本新古品・未使用品。出版社からの新着。Named one of The Washington Post's 50 Notable Works of Nonfiction While the North prevailed in the Civil War, ending slavery and giving the country a "new birth of freedom," Heather Cox Richardson argues in this provocative work that democracy's blood-soaked victory was ephemeral. The system that had sustained the defeated South moved westward and there established a foothold. It was a natural fit. Settlers from the East had for decades been pushing into the West, where the seizure of Mexican lands at the end of the Mexican-American War and treatment of Native Americans cemented racial hierarchies. The South and West equally depended on extractive industries-cotton in the former and mining, cattle, and oil in the latter-giving rise a new birth of white male oligarchy, despite the guarantees provided by the 13th, 14th, and 15th Amendments, and the economic opportunities afforded by expansion. To reveal why this happened, How the South Won the Civil War traces the story of the American paradox, the competing claims of equality and subordination woven into the nation's fabric and identity. At the nation's founding, it was the Eastern "yeoman farmer" who galvanized and symbolized the American Revolution. After the Civil War, that mantle was assumed by the Western cowboy, singlehandedly defending his land against barbarians and savages as well as from a rapacious government. New states entered the Union in the late nineteenth century and western and southern leaders found yet more common ground. As resources and people streamed into the West during the New Deal and World War II, the region's influence grew. "Movement Conservatives," led by westerners Barry Goldwater, Richard Nixon, and Ronald Reagan, claimed to embody cowboy individualism and worked with Dixiecrats to embrace the ideology of the Confederacy. Richardson's searing book seizes upon the soul of the country and its ongoing struggle to provide equal opportunity to all. Debunking the myth that the Civil War released the nation from the grip of oligarchy, expunging the sins of the Founding, it reveals how and why the Old South not only survived in the West, but thrived.

Saramago's tale runs from the Garden of Eden, when God realizes he has forgotten to give Adam and Eve the gift of speech, to the moment when Noah's Ark lands on the dry peak of Ararat. Cain, the despised, the murderer, is Saramago's protagonist.Condemned to wander forever after he kills his brother Abel, Cain makes his way through the world in the company of a personable donkey. He is a witness to and participant in the stories of Isaac and Abraham, the destruction of the Tower of Babel, Moses and the golden calf, the trials of Job. The rapacious Queen Lilith takes him as her lover. An old man with two sheep on a rope crosses his path. And again and again, Cain encounters a God whose actions seem callous, cruel, and unjust. He confronts Him, he argues with Him. "And one thing we know for certain," Saramago writes, "is that they continued to argue and are arguing still."A startling book--sensual, funny--and in all ways a fitting end to Saramago's extraordinary career.

A chillingly charismatic aristocrat. And a brave socialite drawn to expose their treacherous secrets. . . . From the author of Gods of Jade and Shadow comes "a terrifying twist on classic gothic horror" (Kirkus Reviews) set in glamorous 1950s Mexico. After receiving a frantic letter from her newly-wed cousin begging for someone to save her from a mysterious doom, Noemí Taboada heads to High Place, a distant house in the Mexican countryside. She's not sure what she will find--her cousin's husband, a handsome Englishman, is a stranger, and Noemí knows little about the region. Noemí is also an unlikely rescuer: She's a glamorous debutante, and her chic gowns and perfect red lipstick are more suited for cocktail parties than amateur sleuthing. But she's also tough and smart, with an indomitable will, and she is not afraid: Not of her cousin's new husband, who is both menacing and alluring; not of his father, the ancient patriarch who seems to be fascinated by Noemí; and not even of the house itself, which begins to invade Noemi's dreams with visions of blood and doom. Her only ally in this inhospitable abode is the family's youngest son. Shy and gentle, he seems to want to help Noemí, but might also be hiding dark knowledge of his family's past. For there are many secrets behind the walls of High Place. The family's once colossal wealth and faded mining empire kept them from prying eyes, but as Noemí digs deeper she unearths stories of violence and madness. And Noemí, mesmerized by the terrifying yet seductive world of High Place, may soon find it impossible to ever leave this enigmatic house behind. Covert and overt put-downs. Triangulation. Gaslighting. Projection. These are the manipulative tactics survivors of malignant narcissists are unfortunately all too familiar with. As victims of silent crimes where the perpetrators are rarely held accountable, survivors of narcissistic abuse have lived in a war zone of epic proportions, enduring an abuse cycle of love-bombing and devaluation-psychological violence on steroids. From how to heal our addiction to the narcissist to how to recognize a covert narcissist, Shahida Arabi's articles on narcissistic abuse have gained renown as some of the most accurate and in-depth depictions of this terrifying trauma, resonating with millions of survivors all over the world and receiving endorsements from numerous mental health professionals. In this essay compilation, readers can enjoy some of her most popular articles as well as new thought pieces on narcissistic abuse: what therapists have to say about malignant narcissists and how children of narcissistic parents can become trapped in the trauma repetition cycle. Survivors are offered new insights on what it means to be both a survivor and a thriver of covert manipulation and trauma. POWER teaches us that it is important to not only understand the tactics of toxic personalities but also to recognize and combat the effects of narcissistic abuse; it guides the survivor to learning, growing, healing and most importantly of all-owning their agency to rebuild their lives and transform their powerlessness into victory.

It was the greatest sea-borne assault in human history. The code names given to the beaches wherethe ships landed the soldiers have become immortal: Gold, Juno, Sword, Utah, and especially Omaha, the scene of almost unimaginable human tragedy. The sea of crosses in the cemetery sitting today atop a bluff overlooking the beaches recalls to us its cost. Most accounts of this epic story begin with the landings on the morning of June 6, 1944. In fact, however, D-Day was the culmination of months and years of planning and intense debate. In the dark days after the evacuation of Dunkirk in the summer of 1940, British officials and, soon enough, theirAmerican counterparts, began to consider how, and, where, and especially when, they could re-enter the European Continent in force. The Americans, led by U.S. Army Chief of Staff General George C. Marshall, wanted to invade as soon as possible; the British, personified by their redoubtable primeminister, Winston Churchill, were convinced that a premature landing would be disastrous. The often-sharp negotiations between the English-speaking allies led them first to North Africa, then into Sicily, then Italy. Only in the spring of 1943, did the Combined Chiefs of Staff commit themselves toan invasion of northern France. The code name for this invasion was Overlord, but everything that came before, including the landings themselves and the supply system that made it possible for the invaders to stay there, was code-named Neptune. Craig L. Symonds now offers the complete story of this Olympian effort, involving transports, escorts, gunfire support ships, and landing craft of every possible size and function. The obstacles to success were many. In addition to divergent strategic views and cultural frictions, theAnglo-Americans had to overcome German U-boats, Russian impatience, fierce competition for insufficient shipping, training disasters, and a thousand other impediments, including logistical bottlenecks and disinformation schemes. Symonds includes vivid portraits of the key decision-makers, fromFranklin Roosevelt and Churchill, to Marshall, Dwight Eisenhower, and Admiral Sir Bertram Ramsay, who commanded the naval element of the invasion. Indeed, the critical role of the naval forces--British and American, Coast Guard and Navy--is central throughout. In the end, as Symonds shows in this gripping account of D-Day, success depended mostly on the men themselves: the junior officers and enlisted men who drove the landing craft, cleared the mines, seized the beaches and assailed the bluffs behind them, securing the foothold for the eventual campaignto Berlin, and the end of the most terrible war in human history.
