(Kim Il Sung was the grandfather of our present pesky North Korean Kim, who seems to blame his self-inflicted ills on America) Most recounts of the Korean War are either biased or too detailed for the non-military reader. This book was written for the rest of us, and contains hopefully unbiased judgmental information not available elsewhere in a single writing.＜br /＞ The book contents are set in chronological order with descriptions of major battles, discussions of conflicts, weaknesses, and interplay of US commanders, particularly the actions, sometimes inexplicable, of Douglas MacArthur. It also contains a summary of casualties and losses, orders of battle of both the US Army and USAF, and descriptions of Communist forces committed at critical times. Discussions of the efforts of other UN members, particularly the British Commonwealth and Turkish forces give an insight to the contribution and sacrifices of our comrades-in-arms. With access to USAF “frag” orders at the time, the air war descriptions here are likely more accurate than in USAF published histories tending to glorify USAF contributions. ＜p＞Jubal Early (1816-1894) was an important general for the Confederacy, but his most lasting contribution to the South came after the war. Early served under Stonewall Jackson and Robert E. Lee, rising from regiment commander to Corps commander in the Army of Northern Virginia. Early fought in key battles like Gettysburg and the Shenandoah Valley campaigns, and during his raid toward Washington D.C., his forces nearly killed President Lincoln during a battle at Fort Stevens, making him the only sitting president to come under live fire. However, it was Earlys writing that truly changed history. Early was one of the writers for the Southern Historical Society during the 1870s that established the Lost Cause, a cultural phenomenon that dominated the writing of Civil War history for a century and is still a widely held view today. His autobiography, Lieutenant General Jubal A. Early , Confederate States of America, is a perfect example of Lost Cause writing, in which the Confederacy is unable to overcome the Norths vast advantage in men and resources. At the same time, the Lost Cause deified Lee, thus looking for others to blame for the Souths loss. For years, Early and James Longstreet argued in writing over who was to blame for the loss at Gettysburg, leading both men to attack each other in print. Earlys famous autobiography is a great read not just for the story it tells but also as one of the best examples of Lost Cause writing, and how the Lost Cause was developed in the years after the war. This edition includes original commentary that discusses the establishment of the Lost Cause and covers the argument between Early and Longstreet. ＜p＞In nineteenth-century Europe, differences among human bodies were understood to be matters of scientific classification. At the height of scientific acceptance, it was unthinkable that race or sex or diagnosis or indigence were invention. Today, however, differences among human bodies are understood as matters of social construction. The philosophy of social construction understands differences among humans to be matters of human imposition. Social constructionism's way of understanding the origin of differences among humans is so well-established as to have no currently viable alternatives, even among new materialists, social constructionism's most ardent critics. This book argues that new materialists and social constructionists share a distinction between the political and the ecological. Emily Anne Parker centers her argument on the philosophical concept of the polis, according to which there is one complete human form. It is this form that is to blame for our current political and ecological crisis. Political hierarchies and ecological crises are often considered to be two different problems: for example, many speak of parallel problems, climate change and racial injustice. Parker argues that these are not parallel crises so much as one problem: the ＜em＞polis＜/em＞. The philosophy of the ＜em＞polis＜/em＞ asserts that there is one complete human body, and that body is meant to govern all other things. In that sense there are not two crises, but instead one concern: to perceive the ways in which this tradition of the ＜em＞polis＜/em＞ constrains the present. Elemental difference in the ＜em＞polis＜/em＞ is appreciated in the fact that "empirical bodily non-identity," an Aristotelian concept, can be called upon to elevate one group of bodies among the rest. Parker builds from Sylvia Wynter, who argues that the very idea of empirical bodily non-identity begins with the modern science of racial anatomy, or what Wynter calls biocentrism. Parker argues that biocentrism is a feature of the ＜em＞polis,＜/em＞ according to which the one complete body was defined by its capacity for disembodied thought. The sciences of racial anatomy are a more explicit commitment to biocentrism, but the ranking of matter with respect to one complete human, a body that is the site of supra-natural thinking, is a practice that has always characterized the ＜em＞polis＜/em＞. In this way, the ＜em＞polis＜/em＞ is responsible for both political and ecological hierarchy. It is as responsible for what is euphemistically called climate change as it is for the political hierarchy that constitutes it. ＜em＞Elemental Difference and the Climate of the Body＜/em＞ ultimately bridges the insights of social constructionism and new materialisms to create a philosophy of elemental difference. Even fewer remember the girl she once was, or the woman she strove to be, even under Athena's curse. Who was Medousa? How did she become the creature so feared and reviled by mortals? Who was she before the curse of the Goddess fell upon her? Most people only remembered Ovid's tale of a vain young woman who was so proud of her beauty, and especially of her golden hair, that Athena herself punished her by making her a Gorgon. But in fact, Ovid does note that Medousa, a priestess of Athena, was raped by Poseidon, in Athena's temple. Medousa's story is an unjust and troubling tale that remains relevant today. How could Medousa herself be punished for being the victim of a violent crime because it somehow defiled Athena's temple? Why didn't Athena defend her priestess? Why didn't she bring complaint against Poseidon? Why did Medousa have to be destroyed because of what was done to her? Hadn't her rape been enough to suffer through, but then she had to be driven from mortal lands, a monster, living in lonely desolation? A woman is sexually assaulted, and she bears the stigma, while her attacker is protected. The woman is expected to take responsibility for protecting herself, but we do not teach our boys not to rape. Men with vast sexual experience, consensual and not, are respected, but women who even express interest in sex, are shamed. This issue transcends mythical stories, as it bares relevancy in the world today. In America, a girl is raped, but the boy goes free because "he just made a mistake" or "we don't want to ruin his entire life over one moment of poor judgement." In central and south Asia, a woman is raped, and then she herself is punished for bringing "dishonor" upon her family, while her attackers go free. We have pity for the men, unwilling to see their lives ruined by their own actions; but we have none for their victims, the women whose lives have in fact been destroyed by them. And when those women dare cry out for justice, they are met with incredulity, and threats of murder and rape. Every time a woman is attacked, she must carry the blame and guilt. Every time a woman is cast out of her community for being who and what she is, through no fault of her own, Medousa's story continues.
