Omar Khayyam's Secret: Hermeneutics of the Robaiyat in Quantum Sociological Imagination, by Mohammad H. Tamdgidi, is a 12-book series of which this book is the 8th volume, subtitled Khayyami Robaiyat: Part 1 of 3: Quatrains 1-338: Songs of Doubt Addressing the Question "Does Happiness Exist?": Explained with New English Verse Translations and Organized Logically Following Omar Khayyam's Own Three-Phased Method of Inquiry. Each book, independently readable, can be best understood as a part of the whole series.

In Book 8, Tamdgidi offers the first of a 3-part set of 1000 quatrains he has chosen to include in this series from a wider set that have been over the centuries attributed to Khayyam. Part 1 includes quatrains 1-338 for each of which the Persian original along with Tamdgidi's new English verse translation and a transliteration for the same are shared. Each quatrain is indexed according to the frequency of its inclusion in manuscripts, the earliest known date of its appearance in them, the extent to which it has "wandered" into other poets' works, and its rhyming scheme. Brief comments about the meaning of each quatrain in relation to other quatrains and works attributed to Khayyam are then offered along with any notes regarding its new translation as shared.

Tamdgidi shows that the quatrains 1-338, in the beginning 30 of which Khayyam offers an opening to his book of poetry as a secretive work of art, address the question "Does Happiness Exist?" The latter question is the first of a set of three methodically phased questions Khayyam has identified in his philosophical works as being required for investigating any subject. The order in which the quatrains are presented shows that the quatrains included in Part 1 follow a logically inductive reasoning process through which Khayyam delves from the surface portraits of unhappiness to their deeper chain of causes in order to answer his question. The thematic topics of the quatrains of Part 1 as shared in Book 8 are: I. Secret Book of Life; II. Alas!; III-Times; IV-Spheres; V. Chance and Fate; VI. Puzzle; VII. O God!; VIII. Tavern Voice; and IX. O Wine-Tender!

After the opening quatrains where Khayyam explains why he was composing a secretive book of poetry and what it aims to do, his inquiry starts with doubtful existential self-reflections on his life, leading him to first blame his times, then the spheres, then matters of chance and fate, soon realizing that he really does not have an explanation for the enigmas of existence, concluding that the answer only lies with God. So, he appeals to God directly for an answer. It is then that he hears the voice of the Saqi or Wine-Tender from his inner "tavern," to whom he replies in a series of quatrains closing Part 1. It is in the course of the inquiry in Part 1 that the idea of using Wine as a poetic trope is discovered by him, a matter that is separate from his interest in drinking wine, which he never denies but is secondary to the spiritual Wine discovered and advanced in his book of poetry that in fact represents his poetry, the Robaiyat, itself and its promise in answering his questions.

The logical order of Khayyam's inquiry shows how seemingly contradictory views that have been attributed to him can in fact be explained as logical moments in the successively deeper inquiries he makes inductively when addressing the question whether happiness exists in the created world. We should, therefore, judge each quatrain as a logical moment in Part 1's inquiry as a whole, in anticipation of the two remaining parts of his book of poetry to be shared in Books 9 and 10 of the series, respectively addressing the two follow-up questions: "What Is Happiness?" and "Why Does (or Can) Happiness Exist?"
画面が切り替わりますので、しばらくお待ち下さい。 ※ご購入は、楽天kobo商品ページからお願いします。※切り替わらない場合は、こちら をクリックして下さい。 ※このページからは注文できません。

“Napoleon is to blame for everything” ? this is the title of a German feature film from 1938, and I could also use this as the motto for this publication on Napoleon Bonaparte. For 40 years now ? in other words, since my youth ? I have been studying the person and the era of the small and yet so great Corsican, who has fascinated me, like so many people ? a fascination that is still going on. Whether you have a positive or negative attitude towards him, he certainly leaves very few people indifferent. France’s “Messiah”, who was to end (in the sense of “complete”) the Revolution, was by no means born under peaceful stars on 15 August 1769, and this warlike constellation, which shaped his entire life, lasted until his death. The debate about how he should be judged, lived on even after his death and has flared up again on the 200th anniversary of his death on 5 May 2021 ? albeit not with the same intensity as before. Napoleon owed his success to the “roles” he was able to play. On the one hand, he was an arbiter between the old and new worlds. Standing above the parties, he wanted to bring about unity, his unity, and so he became Emperor of the Republic. Europe could only defeat him by constantly forging new coalitions against him, which was not easy. Napoleon constantly exploited the dynamics of political opposition in his favour. He was very inventive and intelligent, had an excellent memory and mastered the most diverse fields of knowledge: Military strategy, mathematics, geography, history, religion, law, philosophy, literature and economics. He was well versed in almost all branches of knowledge and professions and created a unity at the centre of which he stood. His confidence in this unity led him to distribute Europe’s thrones among the members of the Bonaparte family. Napoleon himself, who came from lower nobility, married Marie-Louise, a Habsburg princess, in the hope of securing the future of his own dynasty, but this hope was ultimately in vain. The Corsican was unable to realise his dream, as Europe rose up against him after the downfall of his “Grande Arm?e” in Russia in 1812. And as his power began to wane, confusion and disorder ensued. Napoleon himself fell victim to his excessive ambition, but this was by no means the only cause of his downfall. His nepotism, war weariness and even the treachery of his subordinates played a role, as did the efforts of his united enemies and the decline of his own strength and health...
画面が切り替わりますので、しばらくお待ち下さい。 ※ご購入は、楽天kobo商品ページからお願いします。※切り替わらない場合は、こちら をクリックして下さい。 ※このページからは注文できません。

If you will,

On the Christian Day of the Dead in San Juan, Atitlan, a speeding bus runs over a gray-haired mongrel dog and severs its spine. The terrified animal drags its paralyzed lower body over heaped stones in a shallow gulch. Black-feathered vultures hop at a leisurely pace from rock to rock in pursuit of the doomed canine. They have no reason to hurry before commencement of the day's banquet.

Furthermore,

In time of war, one of a country's citizen defenders flies a blue and yellow kite above a wheat field. The sun is shining; birds are chirping; a steady breeze keeps the kite aloft. While passing on a narrow track that winds through the field, two soldiers from the invading army pause to watch. The kite soars, darts side to side, flutters, circles and describes a figure eight. For a while the soldiers are captivated by the display, but finally they lose interest, raise their rifles, aim and fire. The citizen defender drops onto the wheat field. His kite sails on for a hundred yards before it falls.

But some stories take longer to tell:

Bart Morgan must have found out about the abortion from the same girl who covered for me when I skedaddled. I made the mistake of phoning to let her know I was safe. I don't blame her for ratting; Bart probably threatened to beat her till she folded. Doesn't matter anyway what she said or what he did, because it's my fault, what happened. Bart blasted into our bedroom and commenced to beating on both of us with his cane until Frank was door-nail dead and I was unconscious with two broken legs. Bart did for me like he said he'd do and Frank ended up collateral damage. I take full responsibility for my part in his murder.
画面が切り替わりますので、しばらくお待ち下さい。 ※ご購入は、楽天kobo商品ページからお願いします。※切り替わらない場合は、こちら をクリックして下さい。 ※このページからは注文できません。

This book was first created as a screenplay. When a theater group in Maryland, USA expressed interest in doing it as a stage play, the author made significant revision to turn it into a play. Converting it into a book of the play meant having the space and the facility to add details that would not be possible in a stage production. Scapegoat is a suspenseful story of a crime leading to another crime. Bringing Jeff Riznak to justice would mean keeping untold numbers of children safe from his predatory behavior. But the same religious system that allowed him to perpetrate his crimes also has the effect of covering them up. In fact, the blame is shifted to an innocent person who has been investigating the crime.
画面が切り替わりますので、しばらくお待ち下さい。 ※ご購入は、楽天kobo商品ページからお願いします。※切り替わらない場合は、こちら をクリックして下さい。 ※このページからは注文できません。

In the state-run prison that was early New South Wales, pockets of capitalism sprang up like sturdy weeds. with them came wage labour and class struggle. Australian workers were organisiing well before the gold rushes, and later a mass labour movement confronted the employers across the continent, opening the way for bitter confrontations.

Controversy surrounds the colonial labour movement because of its racism and sexism, but this book sheets home the main blame for both reactionary ideologies to the ruling class. And despite many criticism, the author renews pioneering labour historian Brian Fitzpatrick's argument that 'the effort of the organised working class...was an effort to achieve social justice'.
画面が切り替わりますので、しばらくお待ち下さい。 ※ご購入は、楽天kobo商品ページからお願いします。※切り替わらない場合は、こちら をクリックして下さい。 ※このページからは注文できません。

"Few books combine theological precision with practical wisdom as skillfully as Lies My Therapist Told Me." ー Jonny Ardavanis

From beloved Christian counselor, professor, and podcaster Greg Gifford comes a bold and balanced critique of the mental health establishment.

Too many people are caught in a vicious cycle of visiting every doctor, psychiatrist, psychologist, and therapist in their area only to find frustrating labels and numbing medications at the end of each path. Rather than eradicating anxiety in the same way vaccines conquered smallpox, the mental health establishment has seen the number of diagnoses and prescriptions skyrocket on its watch.

How did we get here? And does Christianity have any answers for this mental health crisis?

In Lies My Therapist Told Me, Dr. Greg Gifford delivers the definitive Christian critique of secular psychiatry and psychology. He shows how mental health culture spreads beliefs that misinform our understanding of ourselves and our issues, and he debunks popular myths such as:

We feel and act the way we do because the body keeps the scores of trauma

Addiction is a disease

If you improve your brain health, your mind will follow

Medications can heal your mind

Every abnormal or sinful behavior is caused by a mental disorder

These ideas, though common, are ultimately unhelpful because they are based on unbiblical assumptions. Gifford brings clarity where secular therapy has created confusion, and offers hope even for those struggling with the hard cases. Through deep research, biblical teaching, and the inspiring stories of real counselees, he shows why we can’t blame the past ーor even a diagnosisー for our bad behavior, and why our society’s growing unhappiness is not primarily a medical issue.

With a foreword by Todd Friel of Wretched Radio, this book is a must-read for counselors and counselees alike. You can read all the mental health research in the world, but you still won’t learn God’s answers for winning the battles in your mind. Lies My Therapist Told Me is a powerful, cutting-edge argument that the supernatural wisdom of the Bible is truly enough for every need.

This translation is intended to supplement a work entitled “The Authoress of the Odyssey”, which I published in 1897. I could not give the whole “Odyssey” in that book without making it unwieldy, I therefore epitomised my translation, which was already completed and which I now publish in full. I shall not here argue the two main points dealt with in the work just mentioned; I have nothing either to add to, or to withdraw from, what I have there written. The points in question are: (1) that the “Odyssey” was written entirely at, and drawn entirely from, the place now called Trapani on the West Coast of Sicily, alike as regards the Phaeacian and the Ithaca scenes; while the voyages of Ulysses, when once he is within easy reach of Sicily, solve themselves into a periplus of the island, practically from Trapani back to Trapani, via the Lipari islands, the Straits of Messina, and the island of Pantellaria. (2) That the poem was entirely written by a very young woman, who lived at the place now called Trapani, and introduced herself into her work under the name of Nausicaa. The main arguments on which I base the first of these somewhat startling contentions, have been prominently and repeatedly before the English and Italian public ever since they appeared (without rejoinder) in the “Athenaeum” for January 30 and February 20, 1892. Both contentions were urged (also without rejoinder) in the Johnian “Eagle” for the Lent and October terms of the same year. Nothing to which I should reply has reached me from any quarter, and knowing how anxiously I have endeavoured to learn the existence of any flaws in my argument, I begin to feel some confidence that, did such flaws exist, I should have heard, at any rate about some of them, before now. Without, therefore, for a moment pretending to think that scholars generally acquiesce in my conclusions, I shall act as thinking them little likely so to gainsay me as that it will be incumbent upon me to reply, and shall confine myself to translating the “Odyssey” for English readers, with such notes as I think will be found useful. Among these I would especially call attention to one on xxii. 465-473 which Lord Grimthorpe has kindly allowed me to make public. I have repeated several of the illustrations used in “The Authoress of the Odyssey”, and have added two which I hope may bring the outer court of Ulysses’ house more vividly before the reader. I should like to explain that the presence of a man and a dog in one illustration is accidental, and was not observed by me till I developed the negative. In an appendix I have also reprinted the paragraphs explanatory of the plan of Ulysses’ house, together with the plan itself. The reader is recommended to study this plan with some attention. In the preface to my translation of the “Iliad” I have given my views as to the main principles by which a translator should be guided, and need not repeat them here, beyond pointing out that the initial liberty of translating poetry into prose involves the continual taking of more or less liberty throughout the translation; for much that is right in poetry is wrong in prose, and the exigencies of readable prose are the first things to be considered in a prose translation. That the reader, however, may see how far I have departed from strict construe, I will print here Messrs. Butcher and Lang’s translation of the sixty lines or so of the “Odyssey.” Their translation runs: Tell me, Muse, of that man, so ready at need, who wandered far and wide, after he had sacked the sacred citadel of Troy, and many were the men whose towns he saw and whose mind he learnt, yea, and many the woes he suffered in his heart on the deep, striving to win his own life and the return of his company. Nay, but even so he saved not his company, though he desired it sore. For through the blindness of their own hearts they perished, fools, who devoured the oxen of Helios Hyperion: but the god took from them their day of returning. Of these things, goddess, daughter of Zeus, whencesoever thou hast heard thereof, declare thou even unto us. Now all the rest, as many as fled from sheer destruction, were at home, and had escaped both war and sea, but Odysseus only, craving for his wife and for his homeward path, the lady nymph Calypso held, that fair goddess, in her hollow caves, longing to have him for her lord. But when now the year had come in the courses of the seasons, wherein the gods had ordained that he should return home to Ithaca, not even there was he quit of labours, not even among his own; but all the gods had pity on him save Poseidon, who raged continually against godlike Odysseus, till he came to his own country. Howbeit Poseidon had now departed for the distant Ethiopians, the Ethiopians that are sundered in twain, the uttermost of men, abiding some where Hyperion sinks and some where he rises. There he looked to receive his hecatomb of bulls and rams, there he made merry sitting at the feast, but the other gods were gathered in the halls of Olympian Zeus. Then among them the father of men and gods began to speak, for he bethought him in his heart of noble Aegisthus, whom the son of Agamemnon, far-famed Orestes, slew. Thinking upon him he spake out among the Immortals: ‘Lo you now, how vainly mortal men do blame the gods! For of us they say comes evil, whereas they even of themselves, through the blindness of their own hearts, have sorrows beyond that which is ordained. Even as of late Aegisthus, beyond that which was ordained, took to him the wedded wife of the son of Atreus, and killed her lord on his return, and that with sheer doom before his eyes, since we had warned him by the embassy of Hermes the keen-sighted, the slayer of Argos, that he should neither kill the man, nor woo his wife. For the son of Atreus shall be avenged at the hand of Orestes, so soon as he shall come to man’s estate and long for his own country. So spake Hermes, yet he prevailed not on the heart of Aegisthus, for all his good will; but now hath he paid one price for all.’ And the goddess, grey-eyed Athene, answered him, saying: ‘O father, our father Cronides, throned in the highest; that man assuredly lies in a death that is his due; so perish likewise all who work such deeds! But my heart is rent for wise Odysseus, the hapless one, who far from his friends this long while suffereth affliction in a sea-girt isle, where is the navel of the sea, a woodland isle, and therein a goddess hath her habitation, the daughter of the wizard Atlas, who knows the depths of every sea, and himself upholds the tall pillars which keep earth and sky asunder. His daughter it is that holds the hapless man in sorrow: and ever with soft and guileful tales she is wooing him to forgetfulness of Ithaca. But Odysseus yearning to see if it were but the smoke leap upwards from his own land, hath a desire to die. As for thee, thine heart regardeth it not at all, Olympian! What! Did not Odysseus by the ships of the Argives make thee free offering of sacrifice in the wide Trojan land? Wherefore wast thou then so wroth with him, O Zeus?’ The “Odyssey” (as every one knows) abounds in passages borrowed from the “Iliad”; I had wished to print these in a slightly different type, with marginal references to the “Iliad,” and had marked them to this end in my MS. I found, however, that the translation would be thus hopelessly scholasticised, and abandoned my intention. I would nevertheless urge on those who have the management of our University presses, that they would render a great service to students if they would publish a Greek text of the “Odyssey” with the Iliadic passages printed in a different type, and with marginal references. I have given the British Museum a copy of the “Odyssey” with the Iliadic passages underlined and referred to in MS.; I have also given an “Iliad” marked with all the Odyssean passages, and their references; but copies of both the “Iliad” and “Odyssey” so marked ought to be within easy reach of all students. Any one who at the present day discusses the questions that have arisen round the “Iliad” since Wolf’s time, without keeping it well before his reader’s mind that the “Odyssey” was demonstrably written from one single neighbourhood, and hence (even though nothing else pointed to this conclusion) presumably by one person onlyーthat it was written certainly before 750, and in all probability before 1000 B.C.ーthat the writer of this very early poem was demonstrably familiar with the “Iliad” as we now have it, borrowing as freely from those books whose genuineness has been most impugned, as from those which are admitted to be by Homerーany one who fails to keep these points before his readers, is hardly dealing equitably by them. Any one on the other hand, who will mark his “Iliad” and his “Odyssey” from the copies in the British Museum above referred to, and who will draw the only inference that common sense can draw from the presence of so many identical passages in both poems, will, I believe, find no difficulty in assigning their proper value to a large number of books here and on the Continent that at present enjoy considerable reputations. Furthermore, and this perhaps is an advantage better worth securing, he will find that many puzzles of the “Odyssey” cease to puzzle him on the discovery that they arise from over-saturation with the “Iliad.” Other difficulties will also disappear as soon as the development of the poem in the writer’s mind is understood. I have dealt with this at some length in pp. 251-261 of “The Authoress of the Odyssey”. Briefly, the “Odyssey” consists of two distinct poems: (1) The Return of Ulysses, which alone the Muse is asked to sing in the opening lines of the poem. This poem includes the Phaeacian episode, and the account of Ulysses’ adventures as told by himself in Books ix.-xii. It consists of lines 1-79 (roughly) of Book i., of line 28 of Book v., and thence without intermission to the middle of line 187 of Book xiii., at which point the original scheme was abandoned. This book challenges readers to rethink their understanding of suffering and its role in shaping the human condition. From the corridors of ancient philosophy to the latest findings in psychology and neuroscience, this comprehensive work examines the multifaceted nature of human suffering. It explores how our perceptions, beliefs, and social structures influence our experience of hardship and our responses to it.
The provocative title of this book is meant for the reader to instantly protest and think, “What? No way!” Suppose you had just been treated to an elegant and completely satisfying ten course meal that leisurely lasted a full three hours. I once enjoyed such meal on board a Celebrity Cruise Line ship sailing back from Alaska. Had some sophist cornered me upon leaving the restaurant and said, “Wait a minute, and I will convince you by argument and logic that really, now, you are actually still hungry.” Well, if I were confronted like that I’d immediately tell the fool he is a fool and to go find some other fool to debate with. Hunger is clearly a visceral experience. How do you know when you’re hungry? Stupid question. Of course, you just know; it’s actually one of those self-evident truths that we hold. It’s likewise foolishness to blame someone for making you fat. No adults, anyway, are force fed a caloric intake in excess of what they can burn off with exercise. They do that to themselves. So, no one makes me fat. Nevertheless, the syntactically similar statement, “You make me so mad I could scream” goes unchallenged. It seems to be not only plausible but probably reasonable and legitimate. This book is a challenge to that apparent reasonableness and legitimacy.
画面が切り替わりますので、しばらくお待ち下さい。 ※ご購入は、楽天kobo商品ページからお願いします。※切り替わらない場合は、こちら をクリックして下さい。 ※このページからは注文できません。

A rebellious, resistant and inherently funny seventy-five-year-old alcoholic falls down the stairs in her home twice in the last two years. She is rescued by her daughter who intervenes by sending her to detox and rehab. Francine discovers that recovery will take her in an unexpected direction that offers her a chance at redemption.

Set in Grand Rapids, near Lake Michigan. Francine Freeman's journey begins at eighteen when she was crowned the high school homecoming queen. It was the highlight of her life- a night of liberation that failed to being her life-long happiness. The last two years have been particularly less glamorous than the memory of wearing a crown. In between taking in strays-animalsand humans-Francine's drinking is out of control. Fortunately, for this hell-on-wheels senior, her daughter realizes that enabling her mother's drinking needs a course correction. She intervenes and puts her into detox and rehab. Not only does Francine needs medical help, but her relationship with her daughter needs clarifying and mending. Francine raises hell in the hospital and thwarts the medical staff. Forced to leave the hospital for rehab, Francine and her daughter begin to create distance from each other. The compassionate and relatable psychologist/addiction specialist, Dr. Jerry, sets the rules for his group. He is a Vietnam vet who searches for conscious clarity in each addict. Her main rehab cohorts include Don, who "went out" after 40 years sober. He takes more than a shine to Francine. Don teaches her how to trust her instincts, get distance from her blame and anger when it comes to her unsupported parents. Their relationship is special but two drunks can never be together. Rhonda, an African American straight shooter has relapsed after getting out of prison. She doesn't get on with Francine until she warms to her honesty. As other addicts in the group either get involved or leave rehab, the dynamic goes deeper into character revelations.

Francine moves on into a volunteer position in a minimum women's prison with Rhonda. She meets the resident pharmacist, Doc Gallardo, and forms a friendship that is vibrant and honest. It's a Harold and Maude situation where they respect and support each other. Doc discovers that Francine is dying. He takes her on a journey to the rodeo Calgary Stampede where Doc goes back to his roots. When Francine discovers that Doc was once a rodeo man, she tells him that he has to find that spirit again. Doc tells Francine's daughter, Rachel, that his real journey is to guide Francine to her final peace, expose her to nature with joy, and to allow her to die on her own terms. He will make sure that her daughter, Rachel, will be with her mother at the end.
画面が切り替わりますので、しばらくお待ち下さい。 ※ご購入は、楽天kobo商品ページからお願いします。※切り替わらない場合は、こちら をクリックして下さい。 ※このページからは注文できません。

Live, laugh, shed blood. Dexter meets Richard Scarry’s Busy, Busy Town in this twisted debut graphic novel! Don’t. Murder. The locals. This is small-town serial killer, upstanding citizen, and adorable brown bear Samantha Strong’s cardinal rule. After all, there’s a sea of perfectly ripe potential victims in the big city just beyond the forest, and when you’ve worked as hard as Sam to build a cozy life and a thriving business in a community surrounded by friendly fellow animal folk, warm decor, and the aroma of cedar trees and freshly baked apple pie…the last thing you want is to disturb the peace. So you can imagine her indignation when one of Woodbrook’s own meets a grisly, mysterious demiseーand you wouldn’t blame her for doing anything it takes to hunt down her rival before the town self-destructs and Sheriff Patterson starts (literally) barking up the wrong tree. 【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】Velocette The Three Twins: Roarer, Model O and LE【電子書籍】[ Brian Agnew ]

The Veloce company is well regarded for producing some of the best single-cylinder motorcycles in race form and for private use. It is not so well known that Veloce Ltd also produced some twin-cylinder machines: the Roarer, for racing, and the Model O for production. These bikes had many engineering features in common, such as twin contra-rotating crankshafts, inline cranks, shaft drive, and swing arm rear suspension. The supercharged Roarer was never raced because of the advent of war; this also put paid to the development of the Model O, which would have been the first so-called ‘Superbike.’

After the war, the Goodman family, which owned Veloce Ltd, focused on the production of a ‘Motorcycle for Everyman’: an idea that had featured in the company’s production bikes since its formation. Ideas embodied in the Roarer and the Model O were drawn on to produce the twin-cylinder LE range of motorcycles; these, however, were not well received by the motorcycling public, and many blame the production of the LE for the eventual demise of the company.

The purpose of the book is to present, from an engineering perspective, an analysis of the Roarer and the Model O, comparing and contrasting the methods adopted by their designers to meet the different design specifications of these bikes, and to illustrate how the ideas developed in this exercise appeared in the LE range of motorcycles.
The authors, Brian Agnew and Ivan Rhodes, met in the 1960s when Brian worked at Rolls-Royce Derby. They spent their weekends tinkering with motorcycles, and both have an intimate knowledge of the Velocette twins both from their time spent together and from their personal projects.

Though many of us know ourselves to be believers, it can be easy to lose our sense of direction when disappointment abounds. Maybe it is our bills that are piling up, our circumstances have become overwhelming, or the discouragement of watching disaster unfold in the world around us.

Heneka is feeling this way. Although he has always striven to believe in his hopes for himself, he finds himself feeling farther and farther from the life he desires. He’s ashamed to admit it, but he finds himself contemptuous and jealous of others, bitter against the world, and despairing at the thought of the future. So, hoping for answers, he decides to finally open the stack of letters from his Father sitting, unopened, on his desk.

Over the course of Unopened Letters, Heneka will learn, along with the help of his insightful friend Amita, the hard truth of just how far he’s strayed from his faithーand the perhaps harder-to-swallow lesson of just how easy it is to come back. As he opens each letter, one by one, he takes up their subjects in conversation with Amita: from where the desire to blame others for our pain arises, the root of doubt in the human heart, and ultimately, what reason we have to always trust in God’s path for us, no matter how far we’ve strayed.

Thoughtful, heartful, and true, the dialogue that unfolds in Unopened Letters invites you to reflect on your own faith journey and inspires you to also respond to the Father.
画面が切り替わりますので、しばらくお待ち下さい。 ※ご購入は、楽天kobo商品ページからお願いします。※切り替わらない場合は、こちら をクリックして下さい。 ※このページからは注文できません。

Starting with the town she was raised in, Reale examines several cultural touchstones within the Italian-American community, along with local and national flashpoints in Italian-American and African-American relations, and subjects such as Columbus Day, Frank Rizzo, Spike Lee’s Do the Right Thing, and how Italians became ‘White’. In examining these issues, Reale challenges the reader and points them towards the lifelong process of racial reckoning.

The style of reckoning here is straightforward and brutally honest, with no apologetics, making this book unique in contemporary anti-racism literature. While the author looks through the lens of her own culture, she argues for the "self-implicative" nature of reckoning ? that one cannot point the finger of blame in any direction other than oneself. Her account shows how our acculturation of racism is both conscious and unconscious, and that only way to face it is head on.

Along with general reader, this book will appeal to college students of all levels, anti-racism educators, Whiteness scholars, high-school students, and those interested in the intersectionality of racism and culture.

"Anti-racist action begins with the self. It entails the difficult work of acknowledging the prejudices we carry and the harm we have caused. In Volta, Michelle Reale maneuvers adeptly through her own racial reckoning and Italian-American history to offer an invaluable model for the reflective praxis essential to transformative change."

ーChristopher Allen Varlack, Executive Director, Center for Antiracist Scholarship, Advocacy, and Action

"In Volta, Michelle Reale uses autoethnographic and poetic strategies to look critically at her own upbringing and how racism extends through generations in a culture. Her vibrant narrative and poetic skills forge bonds between theory and an examined life. This unflinching inquiry provides a valuable model for anti-racist work."

ーAnne McCrary Sullivan, Author of Learning Calabar: Notes from a Poet’s Year in Nigeria
画面が切り替わりますので、しばらくお待ち下さい。 ※ご購入は、楽天kobo商品ページからお願いします。※切り替わらない場合は、こちら をクリックして下さい。 ※このページからは注文できません。

I am a retired payroll manager of the Archdiocese of St. Louis. Upon my retirement, I told the Lord that I had served Him so long (nearly 40 years) that it seemed I should still be serving Him but I told Him I didn't know what that should look like. He told me 'write a book'. After a few more conversations with Him and more than a year later, I began writing a book. Each day before writing, I prayed for guidance and inspiration so the book could glorify the Lord. I am praying this book accomplishes that purpose. Meet Gabriel and Gabriella and their family. Watch them navigate life with its ups and downs. When tough times come, how do they cope and who do they blame for what is wrong in this world? They bring a new perspective to today's challenges as they demonstrate a faith and love for God that is long-reaching to all whom they encounter.
画面が切り替わりますので、しばらくお待ち下さい。 ※ご購入は、楽天kobo商品ページからお願いします。※切り替わらない場合は、こちら をクリックして下さい。 ※このページからは注文できません。
