From Joy We Come, Unto Joy We Return【電子書籍】[ Ami Blackwelder ]

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】From Joy We Come, Unto Joy We Return【電子書籍】[ Ami Blackwelder ]

An award winning story from the Best Fiction of UCF, Cypress Dome of 2007.
Additionally, a semi-final of the Laurel Hemingway contest 1997.

From Joy We Come,
Unto Joy We Return

The sky is a dark and heavy rock about to drop. Her light blue shade bleeds violently with grays and dark blues. I am kneeling before my open window.
‘You are wisdom. You are law. You are our heart, soul, and breath.’ Fattened clouds roll eastward, but she is quiet. Fields of rice, reaching across acres, wave in paddies drenched in last night’s rain. These fields flow under my own and distant houses standing up on wooden stilts. Crowded trains roll across tracks placed away from the villages and move chchch chchch. I pray long and hard. I pray to Mother Lakshmi. She is a mother to all of India. She will bring prosperity to this family.
My whisper softens at the sound of rain and thunder in the sky, the sounds of a whip striking an ox's worn back. The giant rain is awakening. Silence fills the air for a minute. The sky is silent again. I know Mother is listening. My tense cheeks and forehead lighten. I almost smile despite the pain. The sky deepens in color. Rain fights its way to the earth. It fights its way through the clouds like water fighting a dam that is just about to break.
画面が切り替わりますので、しばらくお待ち下さい。 ※ご購入は、楽天kobo商品ページからお願いします。※切り替わらない場合は、こちら をクリックして下さい。 ※このページからは注文できません。

Peyton is a butch knight of the Holy Flame, sworn to protect the feminine sorceresses of the temple, but the sorceresses are more prisoners than anything else. When two sorceresses ask her to aid them in their escape, Peyton agrees, her hope being that she will bed them both. While Willow is more than willing and eager, Robyn is defensive and skeptical. Can Peyton get Robyn to drop her sword? Don't miss the first installment of this lesbian harem romance series!

--

"My greetings," Peyton said to the redhead. "I am Peyton, your sworn knight and protector. You must be Willow, the sorceress I am sworn to." Her eyes went uncertainly to the blonde, who was still gazing at her with steady hunger. "But who is your friend? And why have you summoned me to a tavern in a slum of all places ? not that I'm complaining," she added, her eyes drifting to the topless peasant girls who danced, giggling, on the tables. Damn, the gods were good.

"I told you she fancied women," whispered the blonde to the redhead, and both giggled.

--

Peyton could feel the lust stirring in her. But there was more. She knew Robyn was a powerful sorceress, but she felt overcome with the need to protect her. She stepped close, guiding her horse with her, and looked down into Robyn's pretty blue eyes, caressing her lip with a gentle finger as she said, "I wouldn't hurt sweet Willow. Nor you. I'm here to protect you, Robyn."

"And make love to me?" Robyn whispered, becoming a little breathless.

Peyton gazed down at Robyn seriously as she answered, "If you command me, sweet lady."
画面が切り替わりますので、しばらくお待ち下さい。 ※ご購入は、楽天kobo商品ページからお願いします。※切り替わらない場合は、こちら をクリックして下さい。 ※このページからは注文できません。

Under the Tiger's Claws: A Struggle for the Right【電子書籍】[ Nicholas Carter ]

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】Under the Tiger's Claws: A Struggle for the Right【電子書籍】[ Nicholas Carter ]

“Well, my dear Gilsey, I rather think I can land him for you,” declared Nick Carter, with an odd smile lurking in the corners of his keen, gray eyes. “But that will not do, Nick,” protested Mr. Raymond Gilsey, with an immediate display of apprehension. “Not do, sir?” “It may not be what I want.” “Not what you want?” “Not exactly, Nick,” and Mr. Raymond Gilsey decisively shook his head. He was a venerable banker, with a remarkably gentle and benevolent countenance. He was the president of the Milmore Trust Company, a banking-institution located in Forty-second Street, the patrons of which consisted chiefly of business firms in the immediate neighborhood, and of wealthy women, to whom the up-town location of the bank was a convenience. It was in Mr. Gilsey’s handsome private office that Nick Carter was seated, one afternoon early in May, in response to a telephone request from the banker about an hour before. Between the two there existed a friendship of long standing, and the celebrated detective had hastened to respond. As yet, however, he had received but a hint at the business for which he had been called, and he wondered a little at the banker’s obvious misgivings, as appeared in his remarks noted above. “Please explain, Mr. Gilsey,” said Nick. “Certainly, if there is a deficit in your cash, and you suspectーー Ah, but stop a moment. Perhaps it will be just as well, my dear Gilsey, if our interviewーー” The last, spoken with lowered voice, was considered with a significant glance in the direction of Gilsey’s private stenographer, who sat busily engaged near one of the office windows, and Nick’s glance was equivalent to a suggestion that the presence of a third party might wisely be dispensed with. This third party was a young woman named Belle Braddon, apparently about twenty-five years of age. Certain features about her, however, which Nick’s keen eyes were quick to notice, indicated that Miss Braddon was in divers ways experienced beyond her years. She was that type of girl quite properly termed dashing. Her figure was striking, her face handsome, with mobile red lips, alluring blue eyes, and cheeks with a soft tinge of color not entirely their own. She had, too, an unusual abundance of wavy auburn hair, which was then arranged in picturesque disorder. Regarded from top to toe, she was decidedly noticeable, and the style of girl to which most men are quick to respond. Nick Carter, however, did not quite fancy the general appearance of Miss Braddon, and he abruptly decided that her absence was desirable. In response to the cue so quietly given him, the banker glanced at the girl, and asked: “What are you now at work on, Belle?” Miss Braddon started slightly, much as if her ears had been deaf to any preceding remarks, then turned with a gracious smile to her employer. “On the quarterly reports which you dictated this morning,” she replied, with a peculiarly clear and penetrating voice. “You may drop that for the present, Belle, as I may change some of the concluding pages,” said Mr. Gilsey.
画面が切り替わりますので、しばらくお待ち下さい。 ※ご購入は、楽天kobo商品ページからお願いします。※切り替わらない場合は、こちら をクリックして下さい。 ※このページからは注文できません。

Born to illiterate parents in a deprived area of Glasgow ensured Joe Armstrong would be stigmatised
from day one. His father was an indolent, gambling, alcoholic and his Mother ;a hard nosed, illiterate
workaholic. With no one to turn to in times of need; Joe was left to his own devices; to do whatever
he had to do to survive.Despite the trauma and shame associated with abject poverty and perceived ignorance, Joe was
forced to survive in a world where 'dogs eat dogs 'and survival of the fittest a given. Problem was; Joe
suffered the infliction that is an inferiority complex and as anyone with the same infliction will tell
you having an inferiority complex has many underlying consequences.Due in the main to his inferiority complex and his parent's indifference towards him; Joe Armstrong sought friendship with those he figured were like minded people and as a result of being in the wrong place at the wrong time suffered the consequence that was jail time. Fortuitously aged 19years he met
and married a woman who was sympathetic to both his needs and his personality and from then on it
was onwards and upwards; rising through the ranks of apprentice engineer to that of general manager
of a large earthmoving company. Aged 27, due to mitigating circumstance Joe resigned as manager with the earthmoving company and with the aid of a friend created a business. The business became a success as did co incidentally is
infidelity with the female of the species and over a measure of time he bedded among others his
partners daughter.Again ,due to mitigating circumstances Joe Armstrong was forced to consider other options ;one of
which was construction and in particular house building.Ever the entrepreneur, Joe purchased a series of building sites and built what was considered at the time to be high standard quality homes. Alas although the house building business proves to be
lucrative it becomes his Achilles heel when time after time Joe is reminded of his background and
why the likes of him, irrespective of how much money he makes, will never be deemed anything
other than working class Unfortunately due to a drop in interest rates and the subsequent financial fallout; sales drop
dramatically, forcing Joe to consider advertising in the local paper . A move that would change his life
for ever-With change comes deceit, infidelity, money laundering, ,tax evasion and the beginning of a
roller coaster life that would see Jo and co head off into the blue yonder!One q question remains;.
'will Joe Armstrong prove to be the guy who baulked the trend by rising to the top like cream or
simply confirm that 'you cannot make a silk purse from a sows ear?
画面が切り替わりますので、しばらくお待ち下さい。 ※ご購入は、楽天kobo商品ページからお願いします。※切り替わらない場合は、こちら をクリックして下さい。 ※このページからは注文できません。

Ruby: A Story of the Australian Bush【電子書籍】[ Molly E. Jamieson ]

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】Ruby: A Story of the Australian Bush【電子書籍】[ Molly E. Jamieson ]

CHRISTMAS DAY in the Australian bush! Not the sort of Christmas Day we dwellers in bonnie Scotland or merry England are accustomed to. The sun is blazing down in remorseless strength upon the parched ground, where the few trees about the station cast so slight a shadow. Past the foot of the straggling garden the little creek dances and ripples on its way to the river, half a mile away, and, as far as eye can reach, stretch the blue distances of bush in long, monotonous undulation. “Wish he’d come,” says Ruby. “The pudding will be quite cold.” On such a day as this it does not seem of paramount importance whether the pudding be hot or cold. In fact, Christmas Day though it be, it would be rather a relief to have a cold pudding than otherwise. Ruby’s anxious little face testifies that such is not her opinion. She has come out to the verandah, and, shading her eyes with her hand from the white glare of the sun, gazes now this way, now that. The pudding lies heavily upon her heart. “Ruby!” comes a rather querulous voice from the room beyond the shady blue blinds. The little girl gives one last long glance in every direction, then lets the shading hand drop, and passes through the open doorway of the pretty cottage which is Ruby’s home. “Isn’t he coming, Ruby?” The yellow-haired woman lying on the sofa is Ruby’s step-mother. The roses of the once pretty pink cheeks have paled to white, and there are fretful little lines about the corners of the mouth, and a discontented expression in the big blue eyes; but with it all Mrs. Thorne has pretensions to beauty still. “He’s not in sight yet, mamma,” returns Ruby, wrinkling up her brow. She calls Mrs. Thorne “mamma,” for the fair-faced unaffectionate woman is the only mother the child has ever known. Ruby was only a baby when her own mother died, and “mamma in heaven” is a far less real personage to her little daughter than “mamma” on earth. “It’s very tiresome.” The lady’s tone is peevish, and she fans herself languidly with a large fan lying by her side. “I can’t conceive what makes your father so irregular at mealtimes. Do bring me something cool to drink, Ruby, like a good child. This heat is intolerable.” The “station” is built in a quadrangle, and across one corner of this quadrangle Ruby has to go ere she reaches the kitchen. If it is hot in the living room, it is ten times hotter here, where Jenny, a stout, buxom Scotchwoman of forty or thereabouts, who for love of her mistress has braved the loneliness of bush life, is busy amidst her pots and pans getting ready the Christmas dinner.

An extremely pretty girl occupied a second-class compartment in one of those trains which percolate through the rural tranquillities of middle England from Ganford in Oxfordshire to Rumbold Junction in Kent. She was going to join her family at Buryhamstreet after a visit to some Gloucestershire friends. Her father, Mr. Pope, once a leader in the coach-building world and now by retirement a gentleman, had taken the Buryhamstreet vicarage furnished for two months (beginning on the fifteenth of July) at his maximum summer rental of seven guineas a week. His daughter was on her way to this retreat. At first she had been an animated traveller, erect and keenly regardful of every detail upon the platforms of the stations at which her conveyance lingered, but the tedium of the journey and the warmth of the sunny afternoon had relaxed her pose by imperceptible degrees, and she sat now comfortably in the corner, with her neat toes upon the seat before her, ready to drop them primly at the first sign of a fellow-traveller. Her expression lapsed more and more towards an almost somnolent reverie. She wished she had not taken a second-class ticket, because then she might have afforded a cup of tea at Reading, and so fortified herself against this insinuating indolence. She was travelling second class, instead of third as she ought to have done, through one of those lapses so inevitable to young people in her position. The two Carmel boys and a cousin, two greyhounds and a chow had come to see her off; they had made a brilliant and prosperous group on the platform and extorted the manifest admiration of two youthful porters, and it had been altogether too much for Marjorie Pope to admit it was the family customーexcept when her father's nerves had to be consideredーto go third class. So she had made a hasty calculationーshe knew her balance to a penny because of the recent tippingーand found it would just run to it. Fourpence remained,ーand there would be a porter at Buryhamstreet! Her mother had said: "You will have Ample." Well, opinions of amplitude vary. With numerous details fresh in her mind, Marjorie decided it would be wiser to avoid financial discussion during her first few days at Buryhamstreet. There was much in Marjorie's equipment in the key of travelling second class at the sacrifice of afternoon tea. There was, for example, a certain quiet goodness of style about her clothes, though the skirt betrayed age, and an entire absence of style about her luggage, which was all in the compartment with her, and which consisted of a distended hold-all, a very good tennis racquet in a stretcher, a portmanteau of cheap white basketwork held together by straps, and a very new, expensive-looking and meretricious dressing-bag of imitation morocco, which had been one of her chief financial errors at Oxbridge. The collection was eloquent indeed of incompatible standards.... Marjorie had a chin that was small in size if resolute in form, and a mouth that was not noticeably soft and weak because it was conspicuously soft and pretty. Her nose was delicately aquiline and very subtly and finely modelled, and she looked out upon the world with steady, grey-blue eyes beneath broad, level brows that contradicted in a large measure the hint of weakness below. She had an abundance of copper-red hair, which flowed back very prettily from her broad, low forehead and over her delicate ears, and she had that warm-tinted clear skin that goes so well with reddish hair. She had a very dainty neck, and the long slender lines of her body were full of the promise of a riper beauty. She had the good open shoulders of a tennis-player and a swimmer. Some day she was to be a tall, ruddy, beautiful woman. She wore simple clothes of silvery grey and soft green, and about her waist was a belt of grey leather in which there now wilted two creamy-petalled roses. That was the visible Marjorie. Somewhere out of time and space was an invisible Marjorie who looked out on the world with those steady eyes, and smiled or drooped with the soft red lips, and dreamt, and wondered, and desired.
画面が切り替わりますので、しばらくお待ち下さい。 ※ご購入は、楽天kobo商品ページからお願いします。※切り替わらない場合は、こちら をクリックして下さい。 ※このページからは注文できません。

Treasure and Trouble Therewith, A Tale of California【電子書籍】[ Geraldine Bonner ]

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】Treasure and Trouble Therewith, A Tale of California【電子書籍】[ Geraldine Bonner ]

Excerpt: "The time was late August some eleven years ago. The place that part of central California where, on one side, the plain unrolls in golden levels, and on the other swells upward toward the rounded undulations of the foothills. It was very hot; the sky a fathomless blue vault, the land dreaming in the afternoon glare, its brightness blurred here and there by shimmering heat veils. Checkered by green and yellow patches, dotted with the black domes of oaks, it brooded sleepily, showing few signs of life. At long intervals ranch houses rose above embowering foliage, a green core in the midst of fields where the brown earth was striped with lines of fruit trees or hidden under carpets of alfalfa. To the west the foothills rose in indolent curves, tan-colored, as if clothed with a leathern hide. Their hollows were filled with the darkness of trees huddled about hidden streams, ribbons of verdure that wound from the mountains to the plain. Farther still, vision faint, remote and immaculate, the white peaks of the Sierra hung, a painting on the drop curtain of the sky. Across the landscape a parent stem of road wound, branches breaking from it and meandering thread-small to ranch and village. It was white-dusted here, but later would turn red and crawl upward under the resinous dimness of pine woods to where the mining camps clung on the lower wall of the Sierra. Already it had left behind the region of farms in neighborly proximity and the little towns that were threaded along it like beads upon a string. Watching its eastward course, one would have noticed that after it crested the first rise it ran free of habitation for miles."
画面が切り替わりますので、しばらくお待ち下さい。 ※ご購入は、楽天kobo商品ページからお願いします。※切り替わらない場合は、こちら をクリックして下さい。 ※このページからは注文できません。

Blue Jean Spirituality ? Educating Angels【電子書籍】[ Attila Vincent ]

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】Blue Jean Spirituality ? Educating Angels【電子書籍】[ Attila Vincent ]

They always tell us in church ? don't ask what "God" is. The Papal position is that we shouldn't try to look into the mind or the workings of God. Well; I inadvertently met what we call God a few times ? so I wanted to know. What I found out through my own near death experiences, independent research, and through the practice of advanced free-style meditation ? should blow your mind a little if you have occasionally contemplated your navel regarding these subjects.

It also made me reconsider the information in ancient texts and bibles, as well as the new age books on the subject of Transcendence and Near Death Experiences. I figured I had a real advantage to separate the bull pucky from the truth ? on the basis of my experiences. Having had experienced these phenomenon for myself first hand ? I found I could tell which were accurate and which were made up.

I could easily discern who had an actual experience, and who had not; given my own experiences as a reference. I'm not suggesting these experiences are identical; just that certain earmarks were to be found in the accurate ones. Then; I could explore the differences in the details for information - accurate information.

Some of the information I found was complete malarkey, and I am sure it was made up to bolster egos and sell books and courses. Other books I could easily tell; were written by other versions of me, who actually experienced genuine Transcendence. Given this gift of knowledge and experience - I feel obligated to share what I learned with you, for reasons which will take the bulk of this book to explain.

I plan on spending some time debunking the notion that our Bibles (pick one) are not full of Esoteric Pagan concepts. I do indeed have more than a few "don't ask questions" for those who are not spiritually fearful and fainthearted. Good questions which I have no intention of taking credit for ? because they should be considered all of our questions.

There are many questions which are taboo in organized religion and dogmatic science. A person owes it to themselves to spend a certain amount of time independently exploring such considerations ? this being the age of reason and such. I found that if I used that list of don't ask questions as a dirty laundry list to get to the truth ? you get results.

First off; we always have a missing "first action." Life and reality are much like a firemen's bucket brigade. We can always find our way through science back to the source of the first bucket ? so to speak. We can almost always follow the flow of buckets right back to the first bucket ? which always "just appears." This simple yet deep analogy applies to our universe, the stars and planets, the introduction of biology, atomic sub-structure, and our conscious existence. The "First Cause" as it is called, eludes academics no matter which subject you pick ?there is a consistently missing first bucket. Maybe, just maybe ? what we call God is the first cause.

This applies to the very building blocks of our reality ? atoms. The atoms of which our reality is constructed ? are all but non-existent! An atom is 99.99999999% empty space! This gets glossed over; but science has a hard time explaining why things seem solid and have mass. There is nothing solid about atoms ? and the activity is the only explanation for the mass. This reality is not what it seems

Biologically; the "don't ask questions" revolve around the same problem. What came first the chicken or the egg? Did a seed initially propagate a plant ? or did a plant initially drop a seed? How did life start? Why did it start? Why is the "First Cause" or the "first bucket" always a mystery? If you think science has evolved beyond these questions ? give your head a shake ? and do a little research. These questions remain largely unsolved.

Sex, Love, and Rock ‘n Roll. The Eighties were great, weren’t they? Set on Long Island, during those glory days, Homecoming is the gripping story of a hidden love between Scott and Joan. Their passion smoldered under the surface for years, getting hotter and hotter. Their burning lust can no longer denied. Once released, their illicit union consumes them. Their lives forever changed.

FREE bonus story included!

~~~~~ Excerpt ~~~~~
As a teenager, I was in love with all the hotties who worked at Mom’s spa. But there was one girl at the spa whom I had a major crush on. While I playfully flirted with the all the girls, for various reasons I had to be more circumspect with my crush. Nonetheless, I would josh with her and drop a double entendre here and an innuendo there. I always got a laugh from her and sometimes, with a wink, an impish warning of, “You better watch it young man.”
My crush possessed an alluring blend between Joan Collins and Joan Jett. She had Joan Collins’ smoldering sultriness; her large, expressive eyes and her magical 1,000-watt smile. She also had Joan Jett’s edgy sexiness. Like Joan Jett, she had jet-black hair she wore long but there was a hint of punk to it no matter what the style. Although at five-foot-eight she was taller than Joan Jett, she had a similar physique, being long and lean. She magnified her trim figure with her choice of outfits; and like Joan Jett, there was always a suggestion of rebelliousness no matter what she wore or where she was. This seemed perfect, as her own name was Joan.
When the Seventies gave way to the Eighties, the designer blue jeans gave way to, for a short while, an explosion of colored jeans before settling on black jeans and even jeans with pinstripes. Then jeans gave way to spandex. Many of the girls loved wearing spandex pants, for two main reasons. The first was being catty bitches they loved how spandex is unforgiving and reveals any flaws or imperfections. In an odd twist, you needed a big set of cahones to wear spandex, especially if you weren’t onstage in front of 20,000 screaming teens. The second reason was spandex was perfect to wear in a hair salon. It would not collect hair clippings as how cotton or any other material besides leather would. The girls liked how they could take a damp cloth run it down their legs and Bang, they were ready to go.
I simply loved how they looked.
Joan with her tall, trim and toned body really seemed to love spandex; and I enjoyed how she looked in them. She favored wearing all the many different zebra print styles they could create; and they created many! She wore many of the quirky colors but she mostly wore the white ones with black stripes, which complimented her raven hair and milky cream skin. Even at five-eight, Joan always wore tall heels whether attached to short booties, full-length boots or shoes. As the Jane Fonda craze infected the country, she started wearing many sleeveless tops showing off more of her porcelain skin and toned arms.
While having to be more circumspect, this didn’t stop me from lusting over her. Even though her station was just behind my right shoulder, from the front desk I watched her every move. If I stood at the right angle, she was always in my peripheral vision and I always knew where she was throughout the entire spa. This doesn’t mean I was always subtle and didn’t leer. Yes, I leered.
And she was quite aware of my crush.
She often caught me looking at her and admiring what I saw. Instead of being put-off, she was the opposite. When we made eye contact, she’d smile at me, give me a wink, or wave to me through the mirror. As I grew older and matured, sometimes her reflection would playfully blow a kiss at me or she’d shake her ass for me, and what a nice ass it was! I remember once, after we made eye contact she lifted her hands up to her breasts and bounced them as if having to adjust and shift them. When my eyes fell out of my skull and my jaw dropped to the floor, she laughed loudly startling those around her, as they were completely unaware of her source of mirth.
画面が切り替わりますので、しばらくお待ち下さい。 ※ご購入は、楽天kobo商品ページからお願いします。※切り替わらない場合は、こちら をクリックして下さい。 ※このページからは注文できません。
Ghosts What Ain't【電子書籍】[ Ellis Parker Butler ]
【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】Ghosts What Ain't【電子書籍】[ Ellis Parker Butler ]
I wrote a story once about a little black boy whose name was Mose, and one Halloween he had just about the awfulest time any little black boy ever had in this world. There was a party at the cabin and his mammy sent him to get a pumpkin, to make a jack-o’-lantern. It was a mighty dark night and the little black boy had to go past the graveyard and through the wood and down the hollow, and when he reached the pumpkin patch he was scared almost white. He reached down to grab a pumpkin, and a great big headless ghost shouted at him to drop it ー that it was his head. Little black Mose was so scared the ghost was sorry for him and gave him some sound, comforting advice: “Don’t you ever be afraid of ghosts,” the ghost told him, “because there ain’t no ghosts.” So little black Mose started home and he picked up a stick. “Leggo that; that’s my leg!” an awful ghost voice said, and then that ghost told little black Mose the same thing: “Don’t you ever be scared of ghosts,” that ghost said; “’cause there ain’t no ghosts.” And presently, when he was going past the graveyard, he met all the ghosts in the world, holding a convention. There were millions of them, and every one told little black Mose the same thing: “Dey ain’t no ghosts!” When little black Mose got back to the cabin, he was so scared he was blue-white, and everybody at the party told him he was a foolish little black Mose to be scared of ghosts, because, they told him: “Dey ain’t no ghosts!” Little black Mose allowed they were right, but when it came time to go to bed he just hung around and hung around and didn’t want to go up there in the dark.
画面が切り替わりますので、しばらくお待ち下さい。 ※ご購入は、楽天kobo商品ページからお願いします。※切り替わらない場合は、こちら をクリックして下さい。 ※このページからは注文できません。
The Trail Book【電子書籍】[ Mary Hunter Austin ]
【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】The Trail Book【電子書籍】[ Mary Hunter Austin ]
*** Original and Unabridged Content. Made available by GOLDEN CLASSIC PRESS***
Synopsis:
The homesteader's cabin stood in a moon-shaped hollow between the hills and the high mesa; and the land before it stretched away golden and dusky green, and was lost in a blue haze about where the river settlements began. The hills had a flowing outline and melted softly into each other and higher hills behind, until the range broke in a ragged crest of thin peaks white with snow. A clean, wide sky bent over that country, and the air that moved in it was warm and sweet. The homesteader's son had run out on the trail that led toward the spring, with half a mind to go to it, but ran back again when he saw the Basket Woman coming. He was afraid of her, and ashamed because he was afraid, so he did not tell his mother that he had changed his mind. "There is the mahala coming for the wash," said his mother; "now you will have company at the spring." But Alan only held tighter to a fold of her dress. This was the third time the Indian woman had come to wash for the homesteader's wife; and, though she was slow and quiet and had a pleasant smile, Alan was still afraid of her. All that he had heard of Indians before coming to this country was very frightful, and he did not understand yet that it was not so. Beyond a certain point of hills on clear days he could see smoke rising from the campoodie, and though he knew nothing but his dreams of what went on there, he would not so much as play in that direction. The Basket Woman was the only Indian that he had seen. She would come walking across the mesa with a great cone-shaped carrier basket heaped with brushwood on her shoulders, stooping under it and easing the weight by a buckskin band about her forehead. Sometimes it would be a smaller basket carried in the same fashion, and she would be filling it with bulbs of wild hyacinth or taboose; often she carried a bottle-necked water basket to and from the spring, and always wore a bowl-shaped basket on her head for a hat. Her long hair hung down from under it, and her black eyes glittered beadily below the rim. Alan had a fancy that any moment she might pick him up with a quick toss as if he had been a bit of brushwood, and drop him over her shoulder into the great carrier, and walk away across the mesa with him. So when he saw her that morning coming down the trail from the spring, he hung close by his mother's skirts.
画面が切り替わりますので、しばらくお待ち下さい。 ※ご購入は、楽天kobo商品ページからお願いします。※切り替わらない場合は、こちら をクリックして下さい。 ※このページからは注文できません。
Eris【電子書籍】[ Robert William Chambers ]
【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】Eris【電子書籍】[ Robert William Chambers ]
Breaking ground for a new kitchen garden that afternoon, Odell found the soil so infested with quack-root, horse-radish, and parsnip that he gave it up and told Lister that they’d fence the place as cheaply as possible and turn the hogs on it. Lister hooked up a horse and drove away to hunt for locust posts and wire. Odell dragged his plow to the wagon shed, stabled the fat gray horse, walked slowly back toward the wood shed. There was a dead apple tree he could fell while waiting. It was very still there in the April sunshine. All signs of rain were gone. The wind had died out. Save for the hum of bees in crocus and snow-drop, and except for the white cock’s clarion from the runs, no sound broke the blue silence of an April afternoon. Odell looked up at the window of his wife’s bed-room. The white-capped nurse was seated there, her head turned as though intent upon something taking place within the room. She did not stir. After a while Odell picked up his spading fork and wiped the tines. Yes, every kind of bad luck was coming at once; drouth, bull-calves, wind to waste fertiliser, doctors’ bills, expenses for a nurse, for Mrs. Hagan, for posts and wire,ーand the land riddled with quack and horse-radish.... He’d about broken even, so far, during the last twenty years. All these years he’d marked time, doggedly, plugging away. Because, after all, there had been nothing else to do. He could not stop. To sell meant merely to begin again somewhere else, plug away, break about even year after year, die plugging. That was what general farming meant in White Hills when there were wages to pay.
