CASE FILEーHORROR!

Name: Honey West

Occupation: Private eye

Age: Over 21

Description: Taffy-colored hair, blue eyes

Identifying Marks: Small birthmark inside of right thigh

Warning: Usually armed ー the nerviest, curviest, brainiest, sexiest private eye ever to pull a trigger, or toss three gangland bozos overboard singlehanded.

Residence: Los Angeles.

I'm Honey West, private eye, and I've been invited to one of the wildest birthday parties in recent history. Before I'm even out of the parking lot I've met...the devil, complete with red skin, horns and a barbed tail; a spaceman right out of a Buck Rogers movie, and a Neanderthal right out of the stone ageーand I get mistaken for the Dragon Lady.

There was nothing strange about that, though, it was a birthday and retirement party for a famous director of horror films. Real horror came later, when I found the dead body in a mummy case. It was no two-thousand-year-old, bandage-wrapped corpse, but the horror movie director's very young wife.

Homicide Lieutenant Mark Storm wanted me to drop the case, marry him and quit the detective business before I turned up in the same condition. But I told him that would never happen until I had done what I had become a P. I. for in the first place, and tracked down the man or men responsible for my own father's murder. Besides, the case involved one of the sexiest men I had ever met, a pilot I could hardly keep my hands off. I had to know if he was the killer.

Before it was all over, yours truly had three murders to juggle and I looked likely to be the fourth. But, that's what happens when your beat is La-La Land. The only thing I couldn't figure was the drag queen angle...

"Replete with humor and plenty of risqu? innuendos, the Honey West novels [were] an important precursor to some of today’s best-known distaff dicks, including V.I. Warshawski and Kinsey Millhone." ーThe Rap Sheet

"In her time (the 1950s) Honey was a rarityーan independent woman calling her own shots. She was out there knocking on doors, taking down names, and answering to nobody but herself.” ーMystery Scene

"Good pacing and character development for the first in a series. A noir Master." ーAnna Marie M., Goodreads
画面が切り替わりますので、しばらくお待ち下さい。 ※ご購入は、楽天kobo商品ページからお願いします。※切り替わらない場合は、こちら をクリックして下さい。 ※このページからは注文できません。

****** "It's a notice of eviction. They're throwing you out, Lea. End of the month." I blinked up at her, trying to remember what a normal human response might be to sudden homelessness and then merely closed my eyes instead, a fleeting feeling of freedom filling me as I rode the idea out. I saw myself walking the streets at night, lean and random and hungry-eyed and felt the solace of a thousand untried evils swelter and burn inside me, pulsing now- open veins. I saw myself below the hollow white light of a streetlamp, watching a car roll to a stop at the corner beyond me and inhaled deeply as Madge started speaking, her voice drifting over a wide stretch of empty desert as I wondered how long I could wander without speaking. A year, maybe? Longer than that? I pressed my hand against my ear as I tried to blot her out, the hard, violent pull of wandering forever beneath a gray-blue sky so real I felt my throat close with the heat and blinked quickly as she sat down at the edge of my bed and gave me a shake, the sudden note of concern in her voice jolting me back to reality in a sudden drop. "Lea. Lea. You need to wake up. I'm serious. This shit is serious. We need to talk about this." "What time is it?" I swallowed hard as I heard how raw and wind-blown my voice sounded, already getting on board with the program- a couple years of wandering followed by a quick, uncomplicated suicide. Easy enough. Once the poisons started building.
画面が切り替わりますので、しばらくお待ち下さい。 ※ご購入は、楽天kobo商品ページからお願いします。※切り替わらない場合は、こちら をクリックして下さい。 ※このページからは注文できません。

Yes, I'm a girl gumshoe. And I'm all mixed up in a murder at a beauty contest. The bevy of beautiful babes is international, the prize is big and the stakes are highーand I am sure I can hold my own in a bathing suit, and have them all beat for brainsーbut that means I might be the next one marked for murder, There have been two so far, and the killer, whoever heーor sheーis, doesn’t look like they're planning on stopping.

Right now I'm on the balcony of a high-rise interviewing one of the contestants who looks like she might fit the frame for being the murderer, but she's telling me she knows I am the guilty party and then gives me a shove right over the railing…

At that moment, that diamond ring Homicide Lieutenant Mark Storm wanted to put on my finger looked like the better career choice. But I knew that even if I survived, I'd never drop the case. Because I am Honey West, and private detectiving is what I do and who I am.

"I thoroughly enjoyed this pulp story about the 'nerviest, curviest private detective in LA!' 【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】Thrive Finding Happiness the Blue Zones Way【電子書籍】[ Dan Buettner ]

What makes us happy? It's not wealth, youth, beauty, or intelligence, says Dan Buettner. In fact, most of us have the keys within our grasp. Circling the globe to study the world's happiest populations, Buettner has spotted several common principles that can unlock the doors to true contentment with our lives.

Working with leading researchers, Buettner identifies the happiest region on each of four continents. He explores why these populations say they are happier than anyone else, and what they can teach the rest of us about finding contentment. His conclusions debunk some commonly believed myths: Are people who have children happier than those who don't? Not necessarilyーin Western societies, parenthood actually makes the happiness level drop. Is gender equality a factor? Are the world's happiest places to be found on tropical islands with beautiful beaches? You may be surprised at what Buettner's research indicates.

Unraveling the story of each "hotspot" like a good mystery, Buettner reveals how he discovered each location and then travels to meet folks who embody each particular brand of happiness. He introduces content, thriving people in Denmark, in Singapore, in northeastern Mexico, and in a composite "happiest place in America." In addition, he interviews economists, psychologists, sociologists, politicians, writers, and other experts to get at what contributes to each region's happiness, from the Danish concept of hygge, which translates to creating a feeling of coziness, to the Mexican love of a good joke.

Buettner's findings result in a credible, cross-cultural formula and a practical plan to help us stack the deck for happiness and get more satisfaction out of life. According to Buettner's advisory team, the average person can control about forty percent of his or her individual happiness by optimizing life choices. These aren't unreasonable demands on a person's lifestyle, and they often require only slight changes. They fall into three categories tha
画面が切り替わりますので、しばらくお待ち下さい。 ※ご購入は、楽天kobo商品ページからお願いします。※切り替わらない場合は、こちら をクリックして下さい。 ※このページからは注文できません。

Chapter 1

April 1986

A dark debonair young man, obviously in his early twenties, walks briskly through the magnificent lobby of Broadway International, acknowledging greetings and greeting others on his way out of the office that cool Thursday evening.

"You are kind of in a hurry young man, an appointment or something?" asked Mr. Robinson, a slim and tall man in his forties who holds the door ajar from outside the entrance as they meet.

He smiles, "I have a game of tennis to catch sir; it's been a while."

Mr. Robinson looks high into the sky, "well, maybe not," he quips. "Enjoy the best of the evening."

"Thank you sir," and he steps out of the glass door.

The Lagos Lawn Tennis Club is just about ten minutes' drive from the Broadway International Headquarters office on Broad Street. Twenty minutes after Akin left the office to drive to the club that is right opposite Tafawa Balewa Square, the weather changed.

He parked his car under a huge almond tree across the gates of the club, but sat for a moment inside the glittering metallic blue Renault Feugo, a little dejected.

Almond trees with their huge trunks lining the street darken their shadows upon the road, leaves, and branches already dancing and whistling, heralding the coming of a soothing relief from the scorching sun earlier in the day.

He gathered up himself, stretching his hand to pick up his sports bag from the back seat. It's sure going to be one big rainfall.

Bad timing, he thought.

He got out of the car and slammed the door as he dashed across the road, just in time to miss the first torrents of the rain.

Sneakers screeching on the tiled floor, "Oops!" he exclaimed as he entered the lobby and straight in the face of a lone standing young girl with a beautiful welcoming smile.

"We are all in it," she said smiling.

That's disarming, he thought of the smile.

She looks like an angel from out of space. An outstanding beauty he's never run into in his years of frequenting the club. And the rains came, in its torrents.

"Aren't you lucky," she said. "This shouldn't have met you on the street."

"It would have been something else," he agreed, then sighed.

More people came into the lobby. Akin moved towards the lounge, and the girl instinctively followed in tow.

Chapter 2

Aba-Nla, October 1964

It was a bright early Saturday evening in October, Baba Ode was just returning from the farm, his gun across his shoulders as he was about stepping into his premises.

"You are welcome o baba," a woman coming from around the corner greeted, "eku at'aro".

"Aha, Ajike so you are back," the man stood in his track to answer. "Thank you. I didn't know you have returned from your Lagos trip. You are welcome, my daughter."

"I came late last night baba. I even thought you would have long returned from the farm, that is why I chose now to come and see you." Ajike perched closer to Baba Ode, "maybe I should let you rest while I come back later baba because your son sent me to you."

"What is later there when we didn't go to the farm to lift a weight. Let me just drop my gun. I will be with you shortly," he said as he went inside his hut. "Iya Alaba is working to pack the cassava she was drying at the farm, otherwise, we would have returned together."

"I was just going to ask if she was home," she said.

"No. Her work did not allow her to come just yet."

He came back promptly as he promised.

"You are welcome, baba."

"We thank our creator," the man said as he sits on a huge log already polished from constant use as a seat.

"Ehn, baba. Your son Folaranmi in Lagos sent me to you."

"I hope he is doing very well there?" Baba Ode replied. "He is the ultimate glory of this village and everyone is looking up to him to do us proud. The creator will support him. Our ancestors will uphold him."

"Amen, baba. All our children will accomplish success in life."

"I hope you reminded him about this wife issue. He is long overdue for marriage."

"Baba, baba. The creator is always using you. That is why you are so invaluable in this village. It is on that very issue that he has sent me to you. But first..," she began to loosen her wrapper end to bring something she tied. She brought out some Naira notes, "he said I should give you this little gift baba," she handed the money with a slight courtesy.

"Aah. I thank him. Isn't this too much?" He said with a huge grin as he stared at the handful of money. "The creator will continue to bless him," he prayed.

Ajike answered "amen".

"The creator will continue to lift him and our prayers will certainly come to fulfillment upon his life."

"Amen."

Ajike got up to look around if anyone could be within a hearing distance before she came back to sit beside Baba Ode.

"Baba, please help me…" she began.

"Let me know what it is.."

"Your son is in love with one young lady. He loves her very much."

Baba Ode looked straight ahead as if in communication with some unseen powers.

"But his mind is not at rest over this girl, because she is a very beautiful girl and many men are interested in her. She is very beautiful indeed."

"I can see," Baba Ode replied still gazing ahead. He began to describe what she looks like, "she is truly a great beauty," he said as he nodded his head. "She is not only beautiful, she is also a carrier of great success and huge accomplishments in life. I can see very huge fortune," he continued as he was nodding his head."Any man who marries her is blessed. Any man who becomes her husband will be propelled to great accomplishments in life..." he continued to nod.

Then he sighed. Went quiet for what appears like an eternity. He sighed again, "hmm, hmm, hmm…"

"And what else have you seen baba? What else? Because this your repeated sigh… Hun!"

There was a brief silence again.

"Ajike."

"Yes baba."

"Ajike."

"Yes baba."

"Ajike...hmm."

"Baba I am answering you."

"Are you going to hear me well?.."

"Definitely baba…,"

"Are you sure you are going to hear me very well?"

"I said certainly baba.."

"This girl is not our own."

Everything appeared to go dead silent.

"Ha! I am finished!" Ajike retorted. "My head, my head, my head," she exclaimed as she slaps her head with her two hands." I am in trouble, ori abiyamo o, ori abiyamo o.." she held baba's cloth. "Folaranmi will almost kill himself o baba. He will almost kill himself! Are we not qualified for a good and fortunate woman like that for him? Haa, babaaa is there no way out? Is there no way out baba? Help me enquire baba. Baba help me o. I don't want to lose Folaranmi o. He will be so devastated to hear this. Is there nothing we can do?" She held him again, "Baba, is there nothing we can do so we do not lose this fortunate girl?"

"Ajike, Ajike there is nothing, absolutely nothing. If we try to do anything to change it there will be dire consequences, there will be very serious repercussions. There is nothing we can do, absolutely nothing…"

"I am finished," Ajike said as she rumpled her wrapper on herself, looking forlorn.

Baba Ode stood up. Ajike understood the finality. "There is nothing we can do Ajike, there is nothing we can do...." he said with finality as he made to go into the hut. "Let me go and change so I can join my people at the market square."

Ajike sat transfixed and only managed to bring herself together sluggishly to get up, looking like a woman whose good fortune has crashed upon her.

Slowly she began to leave. "Baba, I thank you o, I thank you very much."

"Let him wait. His wife will come. He just needs to be patient. But on this Omolola…"

At the mention of the name, Ajike looked at Baba Ode again. She realized that all through their discussion she never mentioned the girl's name, but baba even knows as much as the girl's name. Certainly, the old man knows what he is talking about.

"There is nothing we can do Ajike, there is nothing we can do…," he said finally and went into the hut. Ajike sluggishly got up to go, looking exceedingly sober.

Ajike woke up Sunday morning a lost woman. Folaranmi is her first child and the creator has been kind to her over him. He is the first to have western education in Aba-Nla. Her husband has another wife, even though Ajike is the first. She has two girls after Folaranmi. The two girls have since married out since they are female and their father already said he would not send them to school.

All she has been praying is for Folaranmi to be successful in life and support her and the sisters who are still struggling in their matrimonial homes.

What Baba Ode told her yesterday still weighs very much on her mind. How does she give the news to Folaranmi? There is no point mentioning it to her husband, Folaranmi's father. He has his other children from his second wife. That should be enough worry for him. The success of her children is her problem.

Chapter 3

Akinola Akinwale.

Against my wish, I ended up a lone child of a widowed father. My father is my all in all, a great father indeed. Much as he can, he tries to make up for the position of a mother, but he can only try. I miss Omolola Akinwale, my gentle like a dove mother.
Linda Parsons Marion’s fourth poetry collection, This Shaky Earth, straddles time, family divisions and legacies, and the regions of her native Tennessee. From her grandmother’s indwelling kitchen and raggedy garden plot to now being a grandmother and gardener herself, she cultivates the lessons and language of the past in her own backyard. Marion’s poems are leavened with a hunger to understand the upheavals of childhood and its growing pains, to be fed full to bursting on life’s vegetable immensity, to face the passing seasons with grace, where all she knows of this black-eyed earth is perishing even as it flowers.

Old Words

The old words you polish and peel,
choice fruit for my stirred ruminations: ballpeen
and tenpenny hammered anew, cotoneaster
spreadeagle by the wayside. I say them
with you and after you, honeydew on the tongue,
a tad sigoglin. Here of late, memory’s diction
slips, my lexicon less akimbo, loose lipped.
What to do but stagger punchdrunk on the lawn’s
glissando, turn, turn ecclesiastical. Sanko on
over here, drop pebbled syllabics, six-stringed
enjambments like you never done before, howl
wordful under a blue moon twice risen. Rapture
my puny breath to high heaven: sotto voce,
big as all getout. There are two doors, one open into the hall, the other shut and curtained. Through a large bay window, the curtains of which are not yet drawn, the towers of Westminster can be seen darkening in a summer sunset; a grand piano stands across one corner. The man-servant PAYNTER, clean-shaven and discreet, is arranging two tables for Bridge.
BURNEY, the maid, a girl with one of those flowery Botticellian faces only met with in England, comes in through the curtained door, which she leaves open, disclosing the glimpse of a white wall. PAYNTER looks up at her; she shakes her head, with an expression of concern.
PAYNTER. Where's she gone?
BURNEY. Just walks about, I fancy.
PAYNTER. She and the Governor don't hit it! One of these days she'll flitーyou'll see. I like herーshe's a lady; but these thoroughbred 'unsーit's their skin and their mouths. They'll go till they drop if they like the job, and if they don't, it's nothing but jibーjibーjib. How was it down there before she married him?
BURNEY. Oh! Quiet, of course.
PAYNTER. Country homesーI know 'em. What's her father, the old
Rector, like?
BURNEY. Oh! very steady old man. The mother dead long before I took the place.
PAYNTER. Not a penny, I suppose?
BURNEY. [Shaking her head] No; and seven of them.
PAYNTER. [At sound of the hall door] The Governor!
BURNEY withdraws through the curtained door.
GEORGE DEDMOND enters from the hall. He is in evening dress, opera hat, and overcoat; his face is broad, comely, glossily shaved, but with neat moustaches. His eyes, clear, small, and blue-grey, have little speculation. His hair is well brushed.
GEORGE. [Handing PAYNTER his coat and hat] Look here, Paynter! When I send up from the Club for my dress things, always put in a black waistcoat as well.
PAYNTER. I asked the mistress, sir.
GEORGE. In futureーsee?
PAYNTER. Yes, sir. [Signing towards the window] Shall I leave the sunset, sir?
But GEORGE has crossed to the curtained door; he opens it and says: "Clare!" Receiving no answer, he goes in. PAYNTER switches up the electric light. His face, turned towards the curtained door, is apprehensive.
GEORGE. [Re-entering] Where's Mrs. Dedmond?
PAYNTER. I hardly know, sir.
GEORGE. Dined in?
PAYNTER. She had a mere nothing at seven, sir.
GEORGE. Has she gone out, since?
PAYNTER. Yes, sirーthat is, yes. Theーerーmistress was not dressed at all. A little matter of fresh air, I think; sir.
GEORGE. What time did my mother say they'd be here for Bridge?
PAYNTER. Sir Charles and Lady Dedmond were coming at half-past nine; and Captain Huntingdon, tooーMr. and Mrs. Fullarton might be a bit late, sir.
GEORGE. It's that now. Your mistress said nothing?
PAYNTER. Not to me, sir.
GEORGE. Send Burney.
PAYNTER. Very good, sir. [He withdraws.]
GEORGE stares gloomily at the card tables. BURNEY comes in front the hall.
GEORGE. Did your mistress say anything before she went out?
BURNEY. Yes, sir.
GEORGE. Well?
BURNEY. I don't think she meant it, sir.
GEORGE. I don't want to know what you don't think, I want the fact.
BURNEY. Yes, sir. The mistress said: "I hope it'll be a pleasant evening, Burney!"
GEORGE. Oh!ーThanks.
BURNEY. I've put out the mistress's things, sir.
GEORGE. Ah!
BURNEY. Thank you, sir. [She withdraws.]
GEORGE. Damn!
He again goes to the curtained door, and passes through. PAYNTER, coming in from the hall, announces: "General Sir Charles and Lady Dedmond." SIR CHARLES is an upright, well-groomed, grey-moustached, red-faced man of sixty-seven, with a keen eye for molehills, and none at all for mountains. LADY DEDMOND has a firm, thin face, full of capability and decision, not without kindliness; and faintly weathered, as if she had faced many situations in many parts of the world. She is fifty five.
PAYNTER withdraws.
SIR CHARLES. Hullo! Where are they? H'm!
As he speaks, GEORGE re-enters.
LADY DEDMOND. [Kissing her son] Well, George. Where's Clare?
GEORGE. Afraid she's late.
LADY DEDMOND. Are we early?
GEORGE. As a matter of fact, she's not in.
LADY DEDMOND. Oh?
SIR CHARLES. H'm! Notーnot had a rumpus?
GEORGE. Not particularly. [With the first real sign of feeling]
What I can't stand is being made a fool of before other people.
Ordinary friction one can put up with. But thatーー
SIR CHARLES. Gone out on purpose? What!
LADY DEDMOND. What was the trouble?
GEORGE. I told her this morning you were coming in to Bridge.
Appears she'd asked that fellow Malise, for music.
LADY DEDMOND. Without letting you know?
GEORGE. I believe she did tell me.
LADY DEDMOND. But surelyーー
GEORGE. I don't want to discuss it. There's never anything in particular. We're all anyhow, as you know.
LADY DEDMOND. I see. [She looks shrewdly at her son] My dear,
I should be rather careful about him, I think.
SIR CHARLES. Who's that?
LADY DEDMOND. That Mr. Malise.
SIR CHARLES. Oh! That chap!
GEORGE. Clare isn't that sort.
LADY DEDMOND. I know. But she catches up notions very easily. I think it's a great pity you ever came across him.
SIR CHARLES. Where did you pick him up?
GEORGE. Italyーthis Springーsome place or other where they couldn't speak English.
SIR CHARLES. Um! That's the worst of travellin'.
LADY DEDMOND. I think you ought to have dropped him. These literary peopleー-[Quietly] From exchanging ideas to something else, isn't very far, George.
SIR CHARLES. We'll make him play Bridge. Do him good, if he's that sort of fellow.
LADY DEDMOND. Is anyone else coming?
GEORGE. Reggie Huntingdon, and the Fullartons.
LADY DEDMOND. [Softly] You know, my dear boy, I've been meaning to speak to you for a long time. It is such a pity you and ClareーWhat is it?
GEORGE. God knows! I try, and I believe she does.
SIR CHARLES. It's distressin'ーfor us, you know, my dear fellowー distressin'.
LADY DEDMOND. I know it's been going on for a long time.
GEORGE. Oh! leave it alone, mother.
LADY DEDMOND. But, George, I'm afraid this man has brought it to a pointーput ideas into her head.
GEORGE. You can't dislike him more than I do. But there's nothing one can object to.
LADY DEDMOND. Could Reggie Huntingdon do anything, now he's home?
Brothers sometimesーー
GEORGE. I can't bear my affairs being messed aboutーー
LADY DEDMOND. Well! it would be better for you and Clare to be supposed to be out together, than for her to be out alone. Go quietly into the dining-room and wait for her.
SIR CHARLES. Good! Leave your mother to make up something. She'll do it!
LADY DEDMOND. That may be he. Quick!
[A bell sounds.]
GEORGE goes out into the hall, leaving the door open in his haste. LADY DEDMOND, following, calls "Paynter!" PAYNTER enters.
LADY DEDMOND. Don't say anything about your master and mistress being out. I'll explain.
PAYNTER. The master, my lady?
LADY DEDMOND. Yes, I know. But you needn't say so. Do you understand?
PAYNTER. [In polite dudgeon] Just so, my lady.
[He goes out.]
SIR CHARLES. By Jove! That fellow smells a rat!
LADY DEDMOND. Be careful, Charles!
SIR CHARLES. I should think so.
LADY DEDMOND. I shall simply say they're dining out, and that we're not to wait Bridge for them.
SIR CHARLES. [Listening] He's having a palaver with that man of
George's.
PAYNTER, reappearing, announces: "Captain Huntingdon."
Our story didn't begin with Once-Upon-A-Time, but rather with two very unfortunate words I hadn't meant literally.

The trial had been dragging on, and the opposing counsel was past the point of irritating me. Even his blonde hair, blue eyes, and drop-dead gorgeous looks couldn't stop me when he called out, "Objection, Your Honor, but she must be delusional."

"Screw you."

My outburst was warranted. Don't you agree?

The judge didn't see it that though, and he ordered the two of us to his chambers, where he unceremoniously locked us inside to work things out. Alone with the person who had become a thorn in my side, it didn't take long for one thing to became glaringly clear--

Ethan Miller likes it dirty.

The realization had me wanting to drop to my knees. All the weeks of pent-up tension suddenly seemed unbearable, and I didn't care about anything. Who he was. Who I was. The fact that we were on opposing sides. Not even where we were.

As he pushed me back on the hard wooden surface, it wasn't how wrong this was, I was thinking about. It wasn't how I could be disbarred for this very inappropriate conduct. It was more like, "Oh, my God, he's really talented with that wicked tongue of his."

Hey, I like it dirty too.

Little did I know the consequences of our indiscretion would bond us together forever, and not in the happily-ever-after kind of way.

We are two completely different people, and the whole opposites attract thing can only stretch so far.

Right?

***Please note this is a short story and a prequel to Sexy Jerk ***
画面が切り替わりますので、しばらくお待ち下さい。 ※ご購入は、楽天kobo商品ページからお願いします。※切り替わらない場合は、こちら をクリックして下さい。 ※このページからは注文できません。

Johnny Fry's father rode for the Pony Express. Growing up in Kansas, Johnny listened to stories of his father's and his uncle Bill's adventures when they were but little older than him. When Johnny's father dies in the Spring of 1884, Johnny and Jinx, his little black cat, set off on a 1900 miles trek along the Pony Express Trail to Sacramento, California where his uncle has offered him a job and a home if need be. Johnny, man-grown at 18 but still a boy in many ways, rides into a reality much different than the imaginings of his boyhood dreams. Three days into the trip, with Jinx's help, he foils an attempted robbery, gets the drop of the gunmen and watches them walk away barefoot and in long johns, while he keeps their horses and guns. He has no idea he has created and implacable enemy, one who will follow him across the country to a deadly showdown in the shadow of the high Sierras. His route takes him along the Great Platte River Road in the footsteps of pioneers, where he meets a tall, blue-eyed Swede, five years his senior, who wants to come along on his adventure. In Casper, Wyoming, where the trial turns south and west, they meet another who wishes to join them. His name is George Washington Moore, also know as Wash. He is an ex-slave and Buffalo Soldier, who one night in a Casper saloon hears some men planning to ambush and rob Johnny on the trail over South Pass and decides to help him. With Wash's help they ambush the ambushers, but as they approach Salt Lake City, Johnny is thrown when his horse is spooked by a rattlesnake and wakes up in a hospital with many injuries, including a broken right hand, which forces him to learn to use his left. While in the hospital he learns the wonders of love and redheaded nurses, and finds out his pursuer is still dogging him. He spends the winter recovering among the Latter-Day Saints, and as he and his friends are preparing to leave in the spring, learns his old enemy will be waiting for him in Carson City and has hired a gunman to kill him. The trip across the Utah/Nevada desert with his friends amazes him with its wild, rugged beauty, but always in the back of his mind is the idea that soon he must face a professional killer with only the newly won skill of his left hand and the loyalty of his friends and Jinx to carry him through. The 1880's were the time of Wyatt Earp and Doc Holiday, of Jessie James and Billy the Kid and Geronimo, the great Apache warrior. The west was wild and dangerous and the Pony Express Trail takes Johnny right through the heart of it to a future he can only hope for.

Health geography makes critical contributions to contemporary and emerging interdisciplinary agendas of nature-based health and health-enabling places. Couched in theory and critical empirical work on nature and health, this book addresses questions on the relationships between water, health and wellbeing. Water and blue space is a key focus in current health geography research and a new hydrophilic turn has emerged with a particular focus on the aspects of water which are affective, life-enhancing and health-enabling. Research considers the benefits and risks associated with blue space, from access to safe and clean water in the Global South, to health promoting spaces found around urban waters, to the deeper implications of climate change for water-based livelihoods and indigenous cultures. This book reflects recent theoretical debates within health geography, drawing from research in the public health, anthropology and psychology sectors. Broad thematic sections focus on interdisciplinary, experiential and equity-based elements of blue space, with individual chapters that consider indigenous and global health, water’s healing properties, leisure and blue yogic culture, coastal landscapes, surfing, swimming and sailing, along with more contested hydrophobic dimensions.

The interdisciplinary lens means this book will be extremely valuable to human geographers and cultural geographers. It will also appeal to practitioners and researchers interested in environmental health, leisure and tourism, health inequalities and public health more broadly.

The Cowardly Lion of Oz (1923) is the seventeenth in the series of Oz books created by L. Frank Baum and his successors, and the third written by Ruth Plumly Thompson. It was illustrated by John R. Neill.

The story opens with Mustafa of Mudge, a turbaned desert monarch with blue whiskers, who collects lions. Mustafa demands one more lion ー he already has nine thousand nine hundred and ninety nine and a half lions, but there are no more lions in Mudge, and Mudgers are forbidden by Ozma, on penalty of death, to travel beyond the desert borders of Mudge. However, when Notta Bit More, a clown from the circus in Stumptown (somewhere in the humdrum backblocks of the United States of America), and a serious-minded orphan boy called Bobbie Downs (but renamed as Bob Up, by the cheerful Notta) drop into Mudge together, this seems to Mustafa to be his chance to send a non-Mudge person out to bring the famous Cowardly Lion to be the ten thousandth lion in Mudge. Using a magic ring, he enchants Notta and Bob and compels them to set out on a quest to capture the Cowardly Lion.

Meanwhile, in the Emerald City, the Cowardly Lion believes that he has depleted the reserve of courage imbued in him by the Wizard (as told in The Wonderful Wizard of Oz). The mischievous Patchwork Girl, Scraps (who was first introduced in an earlier Baum-written title), misdirects the Lion into thinking that he can replenish his courage by eating a courageous man.
The best of Brien Cole's work is the story of Morning Parrot Trees. And it is superb. The concreteness and fantasy of Fisher's search for the parrot flower are perfectly poised. This is imaginative writing of a high order. The technique is to take the reader inside the action and never let go. His skill lies in knowing what matters. Perhaps his most impressive characteristic is that he does know what matters and resists wasting words on unnecessary explanations. The best of these stories are mulled over and mature, every detail if lovingly placed. - Rodney Hall, Sydney Morning Herald

Brien Cole has the rare ability in a prose writer of handling flamboyant metaphors with credible panache, and rhythm avoiding the ponderous... We experience the casual interchange between fantasy and reality that distinguishes the best of Peter Carey's work - the insinuating reasonableness of the fable rather than simply gawking at the bizarre. Brien Cole's characters are impossible to place socially - blue collar fringe dwellers, bourgeois drop-outs... They communicate only haphazardly with their fellows, yet feel betrayed by nature. A fascinating collection both of characters and of stories. The most original I have encountered for some time. - Bill Turner, Imprints
画面が切り替わりますので、しばらくお待ち下さい。 ※ご購入は、楽天kobo商品ページからお願いします。※切り替わらない場合は、こちら をクリックして下さい。 ※このページからは注文できません。

The petals were voluminous enough to be stirred by the summer breeze, and when they moved, the red, blue and yellow lights passed one over the other, staining an inch of the brown earth beneath with a spot of the most intricate colour. The light fell either upon the smooth, grey back of a pebble, or, the shell of a snail with its brown, circular veins, or falling into a raindrop, it expanded with such intensity of red, blue and yellow the thin walls of water that one expected them to burst and disappear. Instead, the drop was left in a second silver grey once more, and the light now settled upon the flesh of a leaf, revealing the branching thread of fibre beneath the surface, and again it moved on and spread its illumination in the vast green spaces beneath the dome of the heart-shaped and tongue-shaped leaves. Then the breeze stirred rather more briskly overhead and the colour was flashed into the air above, into the eyes of the men and women who walk in Kew Gardens in July.
画面が切り替わりますので、しばらくお待ち下さい。 ※ご購入は、楽天kobo商品ページからお願いします。※切り替わらない場合は、こちら をクリックして下さい。 ※このページからは注文できません。

The room was a small one, and had been chosen for its remoteness from the dwelling rooms. It had formed the billiard room, which the former owner of Weald Lodge had added to his premises, and John Minute, who had neither the time nor the patience for billiards, had readily handed over this damp annex to his scientific secretary.
Along one side ran a plain deal bench which was crowded with glass stills and test tubes. In the middle was as plain a table, with half a dozen books, a microscope under a glass shade, a little wooden case which was opened to display an array of delicate scientific instruments, a Bunsen burner, which was burning bluely under a small glass bowl half filled with a dark and turgid concoction of some kind.
The face of the man sitting at the table watching this unsavory stew was hidden behind a mica and rubber mask, for the fumes which were being given off by the fluid were neither pleasant nor healthy. Save for a shaded light upon the table and the blue glow of the Bunsen lamp, the room was in darkness. Now and again the student would take a glass rod, dip it for an instant into the boiling liquid, and, lifting it, would allow the liquid drop by drop to fall from the rod on to a strip of litmus paper. What he saw was evidently satisfactory, and presently he turned out the Bunsen lamp, walked to the window and opened it, and switched on an electric fan to aid the process of ventilation.
画面が切り替わりますので、しばらくお待ち下さい。 ※ご購入は、楽天kobo商品ページからお願いします。※切り替わらない場合は、こちら をクリックして下さい。 ※このページからは注文できません。

Do we really need another book of zombie stories? They choke the markets and the airwaves already. Hasn't everything that's going to be said about the living dead already been done to death? Well, not quite. Rhysling Award finalist Daniel R. Robichaud envisions unusual worlds involving the living dead.

In these pages you will find five unusual situations, including:

A world where the black collar zombie wage slaves are the subject of moral, spiritual, and political agenda arguments. Drop into the mix with "They Shot Zombies, Didn't They?"

A father who must fight off two "Dead Head" addicts intent on smoking his pacified living dead son's ashes to attain the greatest high.

A seedy bar that has so far managed to hold off the zombie hordes by playing live music around the clock. Although it's true that "RnR Will Never D", maybe everyone else will . . .

A young punker getting a curb stomping is bad enough, but when his recovery is interrupted by the world plummeting into apocalypse, he will learn how far he needs to go to really be "PAF".

A dying mind watching its life pass in several cycles of surreal dream logic. Ever wondered what turning into one of the living dead might be like? "Baptism with Blue Bonets and Sweetbreads" offers a vision to make you think and chill your soul.

So maybe one more book of zombie stories is useful after all. We live in apocalyptic times, and Daniel R. Robichaud's whispers from the other side offer messages both reassuring and horrifying.
画面が切り替わりますので、しばらくお待ち下さい。 ※ご購入は、楽天kobo商品ページからお願いします。※切り替わらない場合は、こちら をクリックして下さい。 ※このページからは注文できません。
