【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】Little Buddha Dog A Short Love Story About A Woman's Best Friend & Their Last Day Together【電子書籍】[ Rita Tanos ]

If you have ever loved or cared for an animal, then Little Buddha Dog will touch your heart! Written through the voice of Countess, a little dog whose heart is full of joy, she recounts the wonderful blessings of unconditional love shared with her Mum, and their last day together. Ready to pass through the veils from earth to heaven, their final goodbye is both touching and sweet as they honor each other in this final act of surrender. This little book is really a gift from Countess to all animal lovers who have lost their beloved pet, or for anyone considering end of life care and their pets final needs as they approach their last days of life. Faced with the decision of how to love them best during their final passage from life to death and eternity is never easy. Little Buddha Dog offers a beautiful and comforting short love story of how their last day and final moments of life together were shared with grace, honor, respect and unconditional love. Sometimes love is also about letting go....even when we feel our hearts are breaking in the process. Sometimes the greatest love we can extend to our beloved pet is the final act of caring enough to say goodbye. To release them from their suffering and knowing when to say goodbye is an act of love. This is not about us...this is about the precious life of an animal we cared for and loved so deeply. We must find the courage within ourselves to accept this final act as a gift of love, knowing in our hearts that Grace is fully present in these final moments of surrender. As they are letting go of life, we learn how to let go of them. Their eyes and hearts tell us everything we need to know. They are ready when they are ready and we must know that, lovingly. If we are the ones bestowed with the honor of being the caretaker during their life, then we too must be worthy of such devotion at the end of their lives. To gently ease their way out of pain and suffering is our final, courageous act of love.

Lone Survivor: The Eyewitness Account of Operation Redwing and the Lost Heroes of SEAL Team 10著者: Marcus Luttrell出版社: Back Bay Books出版日: 2008年05月01日古本ほぼ新品。 Follow along a Navy SEAL's firsthand account of American heroism during a secret military operation in Afghanistan in this true story of survival and difficult choices. On a clear night in late June 2005, four U.S. Navy SEALs left their base in northern Afghanistan for the mountainous Pakistani border. Their mission was to capture or kill a notorious al Qaeda leader known to be ensconced in a Taliban stronghold surrounded by a small but heavily armed force. Less then twenty-four hours later, only one of those Navy SEALs remained alive. This is the story of fire team leader Marcus Luttrell, the sole survivor of Operation Redwing, and the desperate battle in the mountains that led, ultimately, to the largest loss of life in Navy SEAL history. But it is also, more than anything, the story of his teammates, who fought ferociously beside him until he was the last one left-blasted unconscious by a rocket grenade, blown over a cliff, but still armed and still breathing. Over the next four days, badly injured and presumed dead, Luttrell fought off six al Qaeda assassins who were sent to finish him, then crawled for seven miles through the mountains before he was taken in by a Pashtun tribe, who risked everything to protect him from the encircling Taliban killers. A six-foot-five-inch Texan, Leading Petty Officer Luttrell takes us, blow by blow, through the brutal training of America's warrior elite and the relentless rites of passage required by the Navy SEALs. He transports us to a monstrous battle fought in the desolate peaks of Afghanistan, where the beleaguered American team plummeted headlong a thousand feet down a mountain as they fought back through flying shale and rocks. In this rich, moving chronicle of courage, honor, and patriotism, Marcus Luttrell delivers one of the most powerful narratives ever written about modern warfare -- and a tribute to his teammates, who made the ultimate sacrifice for their country.

Mary Blayney, the acclaimed author of Courtesan’s Kiss, returns to the Pennistan family with this new historical romanceーthe delectable story of a free-spirited beauty with no interest in marriage who gets more than she bargained for when a seductive kiss leads to the possibility of love.

Dispatched by their ambitious father to snag a titled husband, Beatrice Brent and her twin sister, Cecilia, attend a house party with an array of eligible gentlemen. Defiantly ignoring her father’s wishes, Beatrice flirts shamelessly with Lord Jessup Pennistan, a gamer with scandal in his pastーand the one man her father has warned her against. But when flirting goes too far, Beatrice suddenly finds herself engaged and, worse, estranged from her family. Though convinced that her fianc?’s wicked ways will bring nothing but heartache, Beatrice is powerless against Jess’s masterful seduction and the anticipated delights of the marriage bed.

A gambling man who has lost more than his family is willing to forgive him for, Jess quickly realizes that compromising Beatrice was the best mistake he ever made. But to keep her he must right the wrongs of the past, reclaim his lost fortunes, and place the boldest wager of his life. For now he has everything to win . . . and everything to lose.

Praise for One More Kiss

“One More Kiss sets itself squarely in Pride and Prejudice territory, both in sentiment and conclusion, with Beatrice and Cecilia playing the parts of Elizabeth and Jane Bennett. The book is light in tone and surprisingly literate in execution. One section has the characters delving into the nature and societal underpinnings of Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein in a manner worthy of literary fiction rather than a mass market romance; another passage skews off into a discussion on the genius of Rembrandt’s sketches. Dialogue is more witty than suggestive, characters more chaste than reckless. . . . One More Kiss is a delightful combination of social comedy, slight mystery, and sweet romance. It’s a thoroughly charming novel, well worth a read.”ーNew York Journal of Books

“Delectable . . . a fun, marriage-minded . . . Regency romp that showcases Blayney’s knowledge of the era. One More Kiss is a charming double love story.”ーRT Book Reviews

“What a fun romance. Oh, the sparks that fly between Lord Jesse and Beatrice are so hot it is surprising that the pages do not sizzle. . . . This story is witty, amusing, steamy and romantic.”ーNight Owl Romance

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】Mississippi in Africa The Saga of the Slaves of Prospect Hill Plantation and Their Legacy in Liberia Today【電子書籍】[ Alan Huffman ]

When wealthy Mississippi cotton planter Isaac Ross died in 1836, his will decreed that his plantation, Prospect Hill, should be liquidated and the proceeds from the sale be used to pay for his slaves' passage to the newly established colony of Liberia in western Africa. Ross's heirs contested the will for more than a decade, prompting a deadly revolt in which a group of slaves burned Ross's mansion to the ground. But the will was ultimately upheld. The slaves then emigrated to their new home, where they battled the local tribes and built vast plantations with Greek Revival-style mansions in a region the Americo-Africans renamed "Mississippi in Africa." In the late twentieth century, the seeds of resentment sown over a century of cultural conflict between the colonists and tribal people exploded, begetting a civil war that rages in Liberia to this day. Tracking down Prospect Hill's living descendants, deciphering a history ruled by rumor, and delivering the complete chronicle in riveting prose, journalist Alan Huffman has rescued a lost chapter of American history whose aftermath is far from over.

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】The Story of My Mother Dear Revised A Tribute to all Mothers【電子書籍】[ Isaiah Drone III ]

The inspiration to write The Story of My Mother Dear develop sometime in mid October 2009 while standing on my grandmother Ophelia’s porch in North Little Rock, Arkansas. This book actually represents a circle of life to me centered on my service in the military. Because when I enlisted my first four years in the military, my father and grandfather died within a number of days apart. However, my two grandmothers died within hours apart after my last eight years in the military. You see I didn’t know then what I know now and that is God chases the ones that He loves. In reading this book I want you to understand that God loves you and He has spent century’s designing you and equipping you to reign with Him forever. He would rather warn you before destroying you and given up HIS BELOVED. I was devastated at this moment of my humanity because I had just lost two of the most important women in my life in less than a few hours apart. The fall season was settling in as I thought about all the things I wish I had done. My Mother Dear Marie was always looking out for me, no matter what wrongs I was accused of I was still her baby, and even her husband’s name was given to me. After my dad had got sick we stop coming around the family as much as we used to my sister and me. I would visit whenever I was in town and try to at least spend the night on her sofa or talk with her over the phone. So I was very reluctant when hearing the news of her passing. I had just visited her in the hospital and pedicure her feet. I would’ve never thought that she would leave me but she must have gone into shock when she heard about my other granny. Ophelia was sweeter than pumpkin pie and if you don’t believe me, ask other people that knew her. They would agree with me and even tell you why. Her prayers are why I am here today with the mental state of mind to write each line and passage without cracking up like glass and cheap china. The Lord gave her as a present, eternal life in Heaven on her birthday, and HE gave Marie Drone that same thing. The spirits of Marie Drone and Ophelia Johnson come to life by the seeds of love that they each planted in the heart and mind of their grandson Isaiah Drone III. In this book their spirits are awaken to tell their individual stories. The Story of My Mother Dear will draw the reader and the listener into the mind of women of old that refuse to let circumstances dictate their outcome. There is something extremely joyful about this book and hopefully it will touch the mind and heart of someone like it touched me. This was my first book so I experienced many obstacles and transitions. Now I have to be truthful with you and the truth is that I have cried tremendously throughout this book. My tears have been by the puddles. My cries have been extremely loud, not for me or my family and our experiences but for the pain of this lady. I saw her one-day outside in the cold pushing a shopping cart. As I begin to write, I could see this strange woman walking the streets and I felt that she never even knew who her mama was. She has been alone her whole life and if you’re reading this book now. I guarantee it will change your very life. Let’s interject something to you sweetie, God loves you, and whatever you have done or been through HE forgives you. So hold your head high and look to the sky and I promise you it’s going to be all right. I feel HIM covering you right now from the top of your head like warm molasses down, down your back and your spine and down to your knees and now your toes. See! We walk by faith and not by sight, now dust your-self off. Sorry, I had to do some needed work there, now back to the book. The structure or skeleton of this book is connected by songs and love poems of Divine Inspiration expressing heartfelt situations and dilemmas that affect not only the characters in this book. But, also the lives of many people transcending over borders of ethnicity and cultural differences divested

The passage of the anti-gay marriage Proposition 8 in California in 2008 stunned gay rights activists across the country. Although facing a well-funded campaign in support of the ballot measure, LGBT activists had good reasons for optimism, including the size and strength of their campaign. Since 1974, the LGBT movement has fought 146 anti-gay ballot initiatives sponsored by the religious right and has developed innovative strategies to oppose these measures. In Gay Rights at the Ballot Box, Amy L. Stone examines how the tactics of LGBT activists have evolved and unravels the complex relationship between ballot measure campaigns and the broader goals of the LGBT movement.

The first comprehensive history of anti-gay ballot measures, both those merely attempted and those successfully put before voters, this book draws on archival research and interviews with more than one hundred LGBT activists to provide a detailed account of the campaigns to stop such ballot measures from passing into law. As Stone shows through in-depth case studies, although LGBT activists lost the vast majority of these fights, they also won significant statewide victories in Oregon in 1992 and Arizona in 2006, and local successes, including ones in Ypsilanti, Michigan, in 1998 and 2002.

Stone analyzes how LGBT activists constantly refined their campaign tactics in response to both victories and defeats. She also stresses that such campaigns have played both a complementary and contradictory role within the LGBT movement. Specific anti-ballot campaigns and the broader movement do often strengthen each other. However, ballot measure campaigns sometimes distract activists from the movement’s more general goals, and activists at the movement level can pressure local campaigns to take on more than they can handle. With gay rights coming under increasing assault from the religious right, this book is a vital resource for LGBT activists and others working to block their efforts.

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】Desert Dancing: Exploring the Land, the People & the Legends of the California Desert【電子書籍】[ Len Wilcox ]
From the book's beginning: "She calls it desert dancing, what we do out there. It's a place some of us call home, no matter where we live; a place you go back to, even when you've never been there before. Deserts around the world may be different, but the feeling is the same; the hearts of prophets and devils alike beat stronger there. A place you feel eternity. Home for the spirit. Forbidding -- to some. Bleak and lonely. No desert rat can deny these feelings at times. That's part of it. It's also the primordial challenge of surviving, low-tech life and death, surrounded by a rugged, powerful beauty and the wonderful adaptations of Mother Nature to the difficult, dry world of the desert. Animals that can live their entire lives without a drink of water. Seeds that can lay dormant for years, then germinate after a desert rainstorm that offers just enough water to bring them to life. The more high-tech my tools and toys, the more I need my desert time, my desert dancing." Reviews: "... goes beyond being a simple A to B guidebook. Desert Dancing reads like the journal of a friend, who, in a highly readable style, shares with you a wonderful trip. Excellent research, combined with an in-person familiarity of the subject at hand, makes this a necessary volume for anyone considering a trip into the desert, or for the armchair explorer who wants to gain a sense of what the desert is all about." -- Bob Moore, Editor Route 66 magazine. "Wow! You can feel the heat, see the old West as it was and what it has become. This books makes you want to pack up your vehicle and head to the desert, but don't leave home without the book - you'll get lost in that vast sea of sand without it. Read this book and you'll enjoy what the California desert really has to offer. Water, water, water, please! An outstanding adventure. Excellent reading." -- Leslie Curtis Riley from Clovis, CA. A combination guidebook/journal to this enchanting region. Filled with historical notes and details of the culture, Desert Dancing is a trip for your senses. Alongside practical travel information you'll find insight into the area's past, and the legends and myths that survive today. Visit sacred places and learn of their mysteries.
These stories translated in this volume are really superb. The translation is high quality beautiful English expression, it captures the mood and the ideas of Chekhov perfectly.

I bought this book solely because of the movie The Reader. Ive gotta say I really like this book. It touches my heart. Good translation too!

An awesome book by one of the greatest short story writers in world literature!

This is a high quality book of the original classic edition.

This is a freshly published edition of this culturally important work, which is now, at last, again available to you.

Enjoy this classic work. These few paragraphs distill the contents and give you a quick look inside:

The stories told of the immorality in such places as Yalta are to a great extent untrue; he despised them, and knew that such stories were for the most part made up by persons who would themselves have been glad to sin if they had been able; but when the lady sat down at the next table three paces from him, he remembered these tales of easy conquests, of trips to the mountains, and the tempting thought of a swift, fleeting love affair, a romance with an unknown woman, whose name he did not know, suddenly took possession of him.

...From the past he preserved memories of careless, good-natured women, who loved cheerfully and were grateful to him for the happiness he gave them, however brief it might be; and of women like his wife who loved without any genuine feeling, with superfluous phrases, affectedly, hysterically, with an expression that suggested that it was not love nor passion, but something more significant; and of two or three others, very beautiful, cold women, on whose faces he had caught a glimpse of a rapacious expression?an obstinate desire to snatch from life more than it could give, and these were capricious, unreflecting, domineering, unintelligent women not in their first youth, and when Gurov grew cold to them their beauty excited his hatred, and the lace on their linen seemed to him like scales.

...She sat down in the third row, and when Gurov looked at her his heart contracted, and he understood clearly that for him there was in the whole world no creature so near, so precious, and so important to him; she, this little woman, in no way remarkable, lost in a provincial crowd, with a vulgar lorgnette in her hand, filled his whole life now, was his sorrow and his joy, the one happiness that he now desired for himself, and to the sounds of the inferior orchestra, of the wretched provincial violins, he thought how lovely she was.

...Anna Sergeyevna and he loved each other like people very close and akin, like husband and wife, like tender friends; it seemed to them that fate itself had meant them for one another, and they could not understand why he had a wife and she a husband; and it was as though they were a pair of birds of passage, caught and forced to live in different cages.

...He was born and had grown up in Moscow; he did not know the country, and he had never taken any interest in factories, or been inside one, but he had happened to read about factories, and had been in the houses of manufacturers and had talked to them; and whenever he saw a factory far or near, he always thought how quiet and peaceable it was outside, but within there was always sure to be impenetrable ignorance and dull egoism on the side of the owners, wearisome, unhealthy toil on the side of the workpeople, squabbling, vermin, vodka.

Book Description:

In this rich embroidery of stories set against the landscape of the Malaysian capital, the city of Kuala Lumpur is as much a character as any of the denizens, drifters and dreamers portrayed in the stories. These are portraits of the capital seen through the prism of stories written by an array of new literary voices.

Each writer’s experience of or passage through the city is variegated; at some point in their lives, they have grown up in, stopped over in, moved into, or lost and found themselves in the labyrinthine chaos of the city.

“KL was never prim and rarely proper, and this anthology celebrates our famous juxtapositions with welcome rudeness.” AMIR MUHAMMAD

Here nineteen writers present a sweeping literary portrait of the city as seen through their eyes, and in ways unexpected and mesmerising take on the challenge of capturing the exuberant madness and cultural diversity of the city and its enduring spirit.

JANET TAY is a litigation lawyer by training. She is also working towards a Master’s degree in English Literature at University Malaya. Her story, ‘Callus,’ was highly commended in the 2004 Commonwealth Broadcasting Association Short Story Competition, and has been adapted for the Oxford Bookworms World Stories collection published in 2008. Another story, ‘Transience,’ was published in Off The Edge, a leading arts and culture monthly. She writes for Quill and The Star.

ERIC FORBES is a senior editor with a Malaysian publishing house. He has always been obsessed with the relationship between literature and life, and the role literature plays in society. He has edited many books but never gets tired of the grand adventure of reading. His interviews with authors have been published in Quill, Malaysian Insider and The Star.

The central character, Melmoth (a Wandering Jew type), is a scholar who sells his soul to the devil in exchange for 150 extra years of life; he spends that time searching for someone who will take over the pact for him. The novel takes place in the present but the backstory is revealed through several nested stories-within-a-story that work backwards through time.

Chapter I: The story opens in 1816: John Melmoth, a student in Dublin, visits his dying uncle. He sees a portrait of his namesake dated '1646' and catches glimpse of 'the Traveller'.

Chapter II: Funeral. Biddy Brannigan tells John the family story. A stranger called Stanton arrived looking for the Traveller, and left behind a manuscript. John finds Stanton's manuscript.

Chapter III: Stanton's story opens in Spain in the 1670s. Stanton encounters the Traveller laughing at the sight of two lovers who have been blasted by lightning. An old Spanish woman tells him the story of the Cardoza wedding at which the Traveller was an uninvited guest. The bride died on her wedding night and the bridegroom went mad. Stanton pursues and finds the Traveller in a theatre in London. The Traveller tells him they will meet again. Stanton's obsession with the Traveller is judged madness and he is tricked into a madhouse. There, the Traveller appears and offers to free him but Stanton refuses. Stanton escapes and looks for him in Ireland to no avail. Following his uncle's wish, John burns the portrait, but later that night he is visited by his ancestor in his dreams.

Chapter IV: The following stormy night, John witnesses the Traveller laughing at a shipwreck. John tries to approach him, but slips and falls into the sea.

Chapter V: John is saved from drowning bye the sole survivor of the wreck, a Spaniard Alonzo Mon?ada, who begins to tell him his story.

Chapter VI: Mon?ada continues his story. He is confined unwillingly to a monastery by his family.

Chapter VII: Mon?ada continues his story. His appeal to leave the monastery is rejected and his brother Juan sends messages saying he will help him escape.

Chapter VIII: Mon?ada continues his story. He attempts to escape with the help of a fellow monk, a parricide.

Chapter IX: Mon?ada continues his story. The parricide monk tells his story. They escape, but it is a trap and Mon?ada's brother is killed.

Chapter X: Mon?ada continues his story. Mon?ada is held and examined in the prison of the Inquisition.

Chapter XI: Mon?ada continues his story. He is visited in his cell by the Traveller, who says he will help him escape. A fire breaks out, the prison is evacuated and in the confusion Mon?ada escapes.

Chapter XII: Mon?ada continues his story. He finds his way to the house of a Jew, but officers of the Inquisition arrive searching for him. The Jew helps Mon?ada escape through a secret trapdoor into an underground passage.

Chapter XIII: Mon?ada continues his story. He finds himself in a secret chamber with a venerable Jewish scholar, Adonijah. The chamber is decorated with the skeletons of members of Adonijah's family.

Chapter XIV: Mon?ada continues his story. Mon?ada is almost out of his mind with terror, but Adonijah gives him food and drink, and says he must transcribe a certain manuscript for him. This contains The Tale of the Indians: an island in the Indies which has been devastated and depopulated by a storm is said to be haunted by a white goddess. A pair of Indian lovers discover the white goddess on the island and worship her. (The story is announced as 'The Tale of the Indians', but at its conclusion this is altered to 'The Tale of the Indian'.)

Chapter XV: Mon?ada's story: The Tale of the Indians. Immalee, the name the natives have given to the 'white goddess', encounters the Traveller. He tells her he comes from 'the world that suffers', but she is immediately fascinated by him.

Chapter XVI: Mon?ada's story: The Tale of the Indians continues. Immalee is again visited by the Traveller who starts to try to destroy her innocence, showing her the shortcomings of various religions. Immalee decides she will be a Christian.

Chapter XVII: Mon?ada's story: The Tale of the Indians continues. The Traveller returns and shows Immalee the failings of human societies and human relationships. Immalee despairs of her love for him.

Chapter XVIII: Mon?ada's story: The Tale of the Indians continues. The Traveller returns and continues with his attempts to corrupt Immalee. She reiterates her love for him and begs him to stay with her and not to go back to his world of 'evil and sorrow', but he will not.

Chapter XVIII: Mon?ada's story: The Tale of the Indians continues. During a great storm, the Traveller and Immalee reach a crisis in their relationship. She falls senseless to the ground and the Traveller departs.

Chapter XIX: Mon?ada's story: The Tale of the Indians continues. Three years later in Spain: a young woman faints at the sight of a stranger (Immalee and the Traveller).

Chapter XX: Mon?ada's story: The Tale of the Indians continues. Melmoth appears beneath her window and once more attempts to seduce her.

Chapter XXI: Mon?ada's story: The Tale of the Indians continues. Melmoth continues to appear beneath Isidora's window, but loses patience and renounces her.

Chapter XXII: Mon?ada's story: The Tale of the Indians continues. Isidora is sanguine, knowing Melmoth will not abandon her for long. Isidora's father writes to her mother revealing he has found a husband for his daughter: Isidora and Melmoth plan to elope.

Chapter XXIII: Mon?ada's story: The Tale of the Indians continues. Isidora's father is visited by his daughter in a dream, asking him to save her.

Chapter XXIV: Mon?ada's story: The Tale of the Indians continues. In J. L. Carr's deeply charged poetic novel, Tom Birkin, a veteran of the Great War and a broken marriage, arrives in the remote Yorkshire village of Oxgodby where he is to restore a recently discovered medieval mural in the local church. Living in the bell tower, surrounded by the resplendent countryside of high summer, and laboring each day to uncover an anonymous painter's depiction of the apocalypse, Birkin finds that he himself has been restored to a new, and hopeful, attachment to life. But summer ends, and with the work done, Birkin must leave. Now, long after, as he reflects on the passage of time and the power of art, he finds in his memories some consolation for all that has been lost.

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】Sunny's Nights Lost and Found at a Bar on the Edge of the World【電子書籍】[ Tim Sultan ]

Imagine that Alice had walked into a bar instead of falling down the rabbit hole. In the tradition of J. R. Moehringer’s The Tender Bar and the classic reportage of Joseph Mitchell, here is an indelible portrait of what is quite possibly the greatest bar in the worldーand the mercurial, magnificent man behind it.

The first time he saw Sunny’s Bar, in 1995, Tim Sultan was lost, thirsty for a drink, and intrigued by the single bar sign among the forlorn warehouses lining the Brooklyn waterfront. Inside, he found a dimly lit room crammed with maritime artifacts, a dozen well-seasoned drinkers, and, strangely, a projector playing a classic Martha Graham dance performance. Sultan knew he had stumbled upon someplace special. What he didn’t know was that he had just found his new home.

Soon enough, Sultan has quit his office job to bartend full-time for Sunny Balzano, the bar’s owner. A wild-haired Tony Bennett lookalike with a fondness for quoting Shakespeare and Samuel Beckett, Sunny is truly one of a kind. Born next to the saloon that has been in his family for one hundred years, Sunny has over the years partied with Andy Warhol, spent time in India at the feet of a guru, and painted abstract expressionist originals. But his masterpiece is the bar itself, a place where a sublime mix of artists, mobsters, honky-tonk musicians, neighborhood drunks, nuns, longshoremen, and assorted eccentrics rub elbows. Set against the backdrop of a rapidly transforming city, Sunny’s Nights is a loving and singular portrait of the dream experience we’re all searching for every time we walk into a bar, and an enchanting memoir of an unlikely and abiding friendship.

Praise for Sunny’s Nights

“Fantastic . . . [Sultan takes] material that might seem familiar and [mixes] a perfect, insightful cocktail: full-bodied, multitextured and delicious. . . . Simply beautiful.”ーThe New York Times Book Review

“Sultan’s love of Red Hook shines through, and it’s hard not to be swept along on the ebb and flow of his emotions. . . . Sultan’s book is, among other things, a meditation on the fragility of the moment and the passage of time. . . . Wistful, funny and biting, Sunny’s Nights rewards you with its evocation of a certain place in time and, as Sultan calls him, ‘the most original man I have ever met.’”ーNewsday

“An affectionate portrait of the idiosyncratic Sunny’s Bar.”ーUSA Today

“Sultan finds Sunny . . . a real character, a poet, a cinephile, a philosopher, bluegrass maestro and (Rheingold) beer server.”ーNew York Post (“Required Reading”)

“Captivating . . . a classic story about a local bar.”ーThe Buffalo News

“An enchanting memoir, a profound meditation on place and a beautiful story of an unlikely and abiding friendship.”ーBrooklyn Daily Eagle

“[A] polished, affecting look at remarkable barkeep Sunny Balzano . . . In elegant prose, Sultan deploys laconic humor, an instinct for telling details, a taste for eccentricity, and above all, clear-eyed compassion for our all-too-human failings.”ーPublishers Weekly (starred review)

“Beautifully wrought . . . an indelible portrait of an unusual man and a nearly forgotten part of NYC.”ーBooklist

“More than an elegy for a bar and a neighborhoodーit’s also a vivid and loving portrait of the larger-than-life eccentric who gave the bar its name and its spirit.”ーTom Perrotta, author of The Leftovers

Kendall was born near Ulladulla, New South Wales. His three volumes of verse were all published under the name of "Henry Kendall". He received only a slight education. When he was 15 he went to sea with one of his uncles and was away for about two years. Returning to Sydney when 17 years old he found his mother keeping a boarding-school; it was necessary that he should do something to earn a living, and he became a shop-assistant. He had begun to write verses and this brought him in contact with two well-known verse writers of the day, Joseph Sheridan Moore who published a volume of verse, Spring Life Lyrics, in 1864, and James Lionel Michael. Michael, who was a solicitor, took Kendall into his office and gave him the run of his library. He removed to Grafton in 1861 and Kendall was again employed by him for about six months during the following year.

Kendall made another friend in Henry Parkes, who was editing The Empire from 1850 to 1857 and published a few of his youthful verses. In 1862 he sent some poems to the London Athenaeum which printed three of them and gave the author kindly praise. In the same year his first volume, Poems and Songs, was published at Sydney. It was well received and eventually the whole edition of 500 copies was sold. Representations were made to the government, and in 1863 a position was found for the poet in the lands department. He was transferred to the colonial secretary's department in 1864 and appears to have discharged his duties in a conscientious way; his hours were not long and he had some leisure for literature.

In 1868 he married Charlotte Rutter, the daughter of a Sydney physician, and in the following year resigned from his position in the government service and went to Melbourne, which had become a larger city than Sydney and more of a literary centre. Kendall's decision to give up his position must at the time have seemed very unwise. But he had become financially embarrassed before his marriage on account of the extravagance of his family, and his wife found it impossible to live with his mother who had joined the young couple.

The elder Mrs Kendall was in fact a heavy drinker, Kendall felt that the only chance of happiness for himself and his wife was to make a fresh start in another city. He was well received by his fellow writers, George Gordon McCrae, Marcus Clarke, Adam Lindsay Gordon and others, but Kendall had none of the qualities of a successful journalist, though some of his work was accepted by the press and George Robertson published his second volume, Leaves from Australian Forests, soon after his arrival. The poem 'Bell-Birds', one of Australia's best-known poems, was published in that volume.

The poet found that he could not make a living by literature and, probably by the good offices of George Gordon McCrae, a temporary position was found for him in the government statist's office. Kendall, however, had no head for figures. He did his best but found his tasks hopeless. One day McCrae was called out into the passage to see Kendall, an agitated, trembling figure who told him he must go, he could not stand it any longer.

Kendall had indeed lost heart; he drifted into drinking and Alexander Sutherland in his essay draws a lurid picture of the depths into which the poet had fallen. It is true that he had the authority of Kendall's poem "On a Street", but years afterwards George Gordon McCrae said that Kendall "made the worst of everything including himself". McCrae had no doubt about Kendall having at times given way to excessive drinking, but stated positively that he had never actually seen him the worse for drink.

Unable to support his family, he was forced back to Sydney by poverty, ill health and drunkenness. Intervals of dogged literary effort alternated with lapses into melancholia. His wife had to return to her mother and Kendall became a derelict; in early 1873 he spent four months in the Gladesville Hospital for the Insane. In 1873 Kendall was taken in by the Fagan brothers, timber merchants near Gosford, and was afterwards given a position in the business of one of the brothers, Michael Fagan, at Camden Haven. There he stayed six years and found again his self respect.

In 1880 he published his third volume, Songs from the Mountains. The volume contained a satirical poem on a politician of the day and had to be withdrawn under threat of a libel action. The original edition is now very rare, but the volume, reissued with another poem substituted, sold well and the poet made a profit of about £80 from it. In 1881 his old friend Sir Henry Parkes had him appointed inspector of state forests at a salary of £500 a year. But his health, never strong, broke down, he caught a severe chill, developed consumption, and died at Redfern in Sydney on 1 August 1882. He was buried in Waverley Cemetery.

The single event that we know as 9/11 is over, but the shock waves continue to radiate outward, generated by orange alerts, terrorism lockdowns, and the shrinking of personal liberties we once took for granted. The stories in this book, of real people faced with extraordinary trauma and gradually transcending it, are the best antidote to our fears. Middletown, America is a book of hope.

All Americans were hit with some degree of trauma on September 11, 2001, but no place was hit harder than Middletown, New Jersey. Gail Sheehy spent the better part of two years walking the journey from grief toward renewal with ?fty members of the community that lost more people in the World Trade Center than any other outside New York City. Her subjects are the women, men, and children who remained after the devastation and who are putting their lives back to-gether.

Sheehy tells the story of four widowed moms from New Jersey who started out scarcely knowing the difference between the House and the Senate, yet turned their sorrow and anger into action and became formidable witnesses to the failures of the country’s leadership to connect the dots before September 11. Sheehy follows the four moms as they ?ght White House attempts to thwart the independent commission investigating 9/11 and expose efforts at a cover-up.

What would become of the young wives carrying children their husbands would never see, wives who had watched their dreams literally go up in smoke in that amphitheater of death across the river? Amazingly, each ?nds her own door to the light. Here, too, is the story of the widow and widower who met in the waiting room of a mental-health agency and brought each other back from the brink of despair across a bridge of love. Sheehy also reveals how bereft mothers who will never have another son or daughter found reasons to recommit to life. And she follows in the footsteps of the robbed children, documenting the incredible resilience of four-year-olds, the anger of teenagers, the courage of sisters and brothers.

Sheehy follows survivors who escaped the burning towers only to ?nd themselves trapped inside a tower of inner torment, from which it took love, family, and faith to free themselves. She is taken into the con?-dence of the night crew at Ground Zero, police of?cers who worked in that pit for eight months straight and then faced the “returning home” phenomenon. She recounts the confessions of religious leaders who struggled to explain the inexplicable to their ?ocks. Mental-health professionals con?de in her, as do corporate chiefs, educators, friends and neigh-bors, town of?cials, and volunteers who rose to the occasion and committed themselves to healing their wounded community.

As a journalist who conducted more than nine hundred interviews, Gail Sheehy is an impeccable researcher. As a writer with a novelistic gift, she weaves the individual stories into a compelling narrative. Middletown, America illuminates every stage of a tumultuous passageーfrom shock, passivity, and panic attacks, to rising anger and deep grieving, and on to the secret romances and startling relapses, the realignment of faith, the return of a capacity to love and be loved, and, ?nally, the commitment to constructing new lives.

Broken Road: From the Iron Gates to Mount Athos - Patrick Leigh Fermor (New York Review Books) 【紙書籍】 9781590177549
Broken Road: From the Iron Gates to Mount Athos著者: Patrick Leigh Fermor出版社: New York Review Books出版日: 2014年03月04日古本非常に良い。 In the winter of 1933, eighteen-year-old Patrick ("Paddy") Leigh Fermor set out on a walk across Europe, starting in Holland and ending in Constantinople, a trip that took him almost a year. Decades later, Leigh Fermor told the story of that life-changing journey in A Time of Gifts and Between the Woods and the Water, two books now celebrated as among the most vivid, absorbing, and beautifully written travel books of all time. The Broken Road is the long-awaited account of the final leg of his youthful adventure that Leigh Fermor promised but was unable to finish before his death in 2011. Assembled from Leigh Fermor's manuscripts by his prizewinning biographer Artemis Cooper and the travel writer Colin Thubron, this is perhaps the most personal of all Leigh Fermor's books, catching up with young Paddy in the fall of 1934 and following him through Bulgaria and Romania to the coast of the Black Sea. Days and nights on the road, spectacular landscapes and uncanny cities, friendships lost and found, leading the high life in Bucharest or camping out with fishermen and shepherds-in the The Broken Road such incidents and escapades are described with all the linguistic bravura, odd and astonishing learning, and overflowing exuberance that Leigh Fermor is famous for, but also with a melancholy awareness of the passage of time, especially when he meditates on the scarred history of the Balkans or on his troubled relations with his father. The book ends, perfectly, with Paddy's arrival in Greece, the country he would fall in love with and fight for. Throughout it we can still hear the ringing voice of an irrepressible young man embarking on a life of adventure.
