Shores of the Polar Sea "A Narrative of Arctic Expedition"【電子書籍】[ Edward L. Moss ]

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】Shores of the Polar Sea "A Narrative of Arctic Expedition"【電子書籍】[ Edward L. Moss ]

HE ARCTIC EXPEDITION of 1875 left England on 29th May, crossed the Atlantic to Davis Straits in a succession of storms, and entered the Arctic regions on 4th July. It sailed with orders to “attain the highest northern latitude, and, if possible, reach the Pole.”

In old times, when voyages were longer than in these days of steam, a nautical frolic on crossing “the Line” helped to break the monotony of many a tedious passage. This time-honoured custom is slowly becoming a thing of the past. When it is gone, there will be little in sea or sky to make crossing the Equator in any way remarkable. The Tropic Zones are no better defined, and one can sail into or out of them without experiencing a sin-gle impressive sensation. But the Arctic Circle has obvious boundaries. A conspicuous change in the ordinary habits of nature warns the traveller that he is leaving the hospitable realms of earth behind him, and entering a region full of new experiences. Here familiar light and darkness cease to alternate, morning and evening no longer make the day, and in proportion as the latitude increases, day and night become mere figures of speech.

While our two ships steamed northward along the west shores of Greenland, the novel charm of constant daylight was felt by every one. We all had our own ideas of what Arctic summer would be like, but ideas drawn from books rarely remain unchanged when brought face to face with reality. Although the passage into perpetual day was of course gradual, yet it was quite rapid enough to upset all regular habits.

Most of us observed sadly irregular hours, but one energetic fellow-voyager, bent on making the most of his opportunities, stopped up for three days at a stretch.

Our squadron consisted of H.M.SS. “Alert,” “Discovery,” and “Valorous,” the latter vessel accompanying the Expedition as far as Disco, for the purpose of helping it so far northwards with its heavy stock of three years’ provisions and fuel. On entering Davis Straits no one of the ships had the least idea where the others were.

They had been separated in a cyclone on 13th June, and had crossed the Atlantic independently. Fortunately, how-ever, all three turned up almost simultaneously off the west coast of Greenland. Four days before crossing the Arctic Circle, the “Alert” and “Discovery” met under the rugged coast near Godhaab.

As the ships approached, each anxiously scanned the other to see what damage had been done by the Atlantic storms. Boats soon passed from ship to ship, and it was amusing to note how both men and officers of either ship (the writer included) already placed the firmest faith in their own vessel, and underrated the seaworthiness of her consort.

It was positively quite disappointing to find that the “Discovery’s” spars were all right, and that she, like ourselves, had lost but one boat. Of course we congratulated each other on our good fortune; and good fortune it was, for our light, beautifully built boats could not be replaced, and few ships, heavily laden both below and on deck as ours were, would have passed through such weather without more serious loss.

The Golden Child's mind runs as wild as her hair, will her uniqueness become her cross to bear?

*"*The Little Girl Lost in Rhyme" by Sabine Ruh House is a moving book filled with lush, poetic text and lyrical illustrations that perfectly encapsulates the importance of embracing your own unique beauty.

Francis Bacon and Ren? Descartes, two of the early founders of modern science, viewed creativity as involving the harnessing of the forces of nature for the betterment of the human condition. In fact, creativity is an increasingly important concept in the burgeoning field of well-being research.(Verger, N. B., & Duymedjian, R. (2020), International Journal of Wellbeing)

The book showcases some of the noise that a child with highly creative proclivities can face, each rhyming passage gives readers a preview of how being different from their peers can sometimes give rise to internal confusion and fear of failure.

Being different can be difficult. And when it happens to highly creative children, their inability to clearly and fully understand and communicate their feelings and experiences can push them to hide what makes them special.

But, when given all the love and support they need, every child can thrive and see their uniqueness as a gift rather than a burden.

If you're looking for a touching gift to give to your kids, friends, or family to remind them of the beauty in their individuality, then you need not look further than "The Little Girl Lost in Rhyme".

A Farewell to Gabo and Mercedes A Son's Memoir【電子書籍】[ Rodrigo Garcia ]

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】A Farewell to Gabo and Mercedes A Son's Memoir【電子書籍】[ Rodrigo Garcia ]

“This is a beautiful farewell to two extraordinary people. It enthralled and moved me, and it will move and enthrall anyone who has ever entered the glorious literary world of Gabriel Garc?a M?rquez.”ーSalman Rushdie

“In A Farewell to Gabo and Mercedes Rodrigo Garcia finds the words that cannot be said, the moments that signal all that is possible to know about the passage from life to death, from what love brings and the loss it leaves. With details as rich as any giant biography, you will find yourself grieving as you read, grateful for the profound art that remains a part of our cultural heritage.”ーWalter Mosley, New York Times bestselling author of Down the River Unto the Sea

“An intensely personal reflection on [Garcia's] father's legacy and his family bonds, tender in its treatment and stirring in its brevity.”ーBooklist (starred review)

The son of one of the greatest writers of our timeーNobel Prize winner and internationally bestselling icon Gabriel Garc?a M?rquezーremembers his beloved father and mother in this tender memoir about love and loss.

In March 2014, Gabriel Garc?a M?rquez, one of the most acclaimed writers of the twentieth century, came down with a cold. The woman who had been beside him for more than fifty years, his wife Mercedes Barcha, was not hopeful; her husband, affectionately known as “Gabo,” was then nearly 87 and battling dementia. I don't think we'll get out of this one, she told their son Rodrigo.

Hearing his mother’s words, Rodrigo wondered, “Is this how the end begins?” To make sense of events as they unfolded, he began to write the story of Garc?a M?rquez’s final days. The result is this intimate and honest account that not only contemplates his father’s mortality but reveals his remarkable humanity.

Both an illuminating memoir and a heartbreaking work of reportage, A Farewell to Gabo and Mercedes transforms this towering genius from literary creator to protagonist, and paints a rich and revelatory portrait of a family coping with loss. At its center is a man at his most vulnerable, whose wry humor shines even as his lucidity wanes. Gabo savors affection and attention from those in his orbit, but wrestles with what he will loseーand what is already lost. Throughout his final journey is the charismatic Mercedes, his constant companion and the creative muse who was one of the foremost influences on Gabo’s life and his art.

Bittersweet and insightful, surprising and powerful, A Farewell to Gabo and Mercedes celebrates the formidable legacy of Rodrigo’s parents, offering an unprecedented look at the private family life of a literary giant. It is at once a gift to Gabriel Garc?a M?rquez’s readers worldwide, and a grand tribute from a writer who knew him well.

“You read this short memoir with a feeling of deep gratitude. Yes, it is a moving homage by a son to his extraordinary parents, but also much more: it is a revelation of the hidden corners of a fascinating life. A Farewell to Gabo and Mercedes is generous, unsentimental and wise.” ーJuan Gabriel V?squez, author of The Sound of Things Falling

“A warm homage filled with both fond and painful memories.” ーKirkus

"Garcia’s limpid prose gazes calmly at death, registering pain but not being overcome by it . . . the result is a moving eulogy that will captivate fans of the literary lion." ー Publishers Weekly

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】A Survivor's Guide to the Dinosaur Apocalypse, Episode Seven: "'Dog' is a Palindrome" A Survivor's Guide to the Dinosaur Apocalypse, #7【電子書籍】[ Wayne Kyle Spitzer ]

Welcome to the Big Empty, the world after the Flashback ... a world in which most the population has vanished and where dinosaurs roam freely. You can survive here, if you're lucky, and if you're not in the wrong place at the wrong time--which is everywhere and all the time. But what you'll never do is remain the same--for this is a world whose very purpose is to change you: for better or for worse. So take a deep dive into these loosely connected tales of the Dinosaur Apocalypse (each of which can be read individually or as a part of the greater saga): tales of wonder and terror, death and survival, blood ... and beauty. Do it today ... before the apocalypse comes.

* * *

"You're a fool, Nick Callahan. A fool. But I suppose you already knew that."

I allowed my hand to drop before plunking down in the fir needles and just staring into space. "There was nothing. I saw nothing. Itーit was like he didn't even exist."

She sat down next to me and exhaled, tiredly.

"He's an animalーwhat did you expect?" She picked up my glove and offered it to me, but I didn't take it. "You said it yourself; it's like they see memories. The eyes. I don't imagine a dog has a particularly long one. Do you?"

I sighed. All I knew for certain was that I felt numb and more than a little tired. "I don't know. I don't know what I expected. Or what I was looking for. An incident, maybe. Some kind of clue."

She laid her head on my shoulder and stared at nothing, same as me. "What kind? A clue to what?"

"That's just itーI don't know. A clue to what might wake him up, I guess. Something I could say. Something that was important to him."

"His butt was important to him," she said. "A source of endless fascination."

I had to smile.

That's when it happened. That's when he yelped, ever so slightly, and his paw twitched.

I looked at Lisa and she looked back. And then my hand was on him and we were runningーPuck and Iーdown cobblestone lanes lined with streetlamps and through pools of foggy light; through tides of rusted Maple leaves, which leapt and swirled as we passed.

"What is it?" I heard Lisa say, her voice growing smaller, more distant. "What do you see?"

I turned to look at Puck as we ran and saw his tongue loll and his eyes shiftーas though he wanted to look behind himselfーbehind usーbut didn't dare.

"Fear," I said. "Confusion." An image entered my mind of a dug passage beneath the rear wall of the T.J. Maxx; of the turkey-like thing crawling through it with Puck hot on its heels. "He escaped from beneath the wall and now he's lost somewhere in the fog. And he's terrified … but of what I don't know. It's almost likeーwait a minute. Wait a minute." I looked behind himーhaving heard something huffing and snortingーand saw a fully-grown therapod dinosaur (colored orange and black, like a Gila monster) bounding after us in the dark, gaining rapidly. "There's something comingーsome kind of predator. An allosaur, I think. Whatever it is, it's closing, and I mean fast."

Teachings and Commentary on the Sutra of Infinite Meanings is compiled from the teachings expounded during the seven-day Buddhist retreats in 1972 and 1973. Master Cheng Yen explained the sutra word by word, verse by verse, and complemented it with many analogies and real-life stories, connecting matters to principles. The book is organized as follows: The first volume includes the Preface, which describes the background of the teachings and Master Cheng Yen’s karmic affinity with the Sutra of Infinite Meanings, as well as her commentary on the first chapter of the sutra, “Chapter on Virtues.” The second volume includes the commentary on the second and third chapters of the sutra, “Chapter on Expounding the Dharma,” and “Chapter on the Ten Merits.” As for the last passage in the “Chapter on the Ten Merits,” “At this time, Great Magnificent Bodhisattva-Mahasattva and the eighty thousand bodhisattva-mahasattvas then rose from their seats” to, “At this time, all in the assembly rejoiced. They paid their respects to the Buddha and accepted and upheld the teachings as they departed,” the audio tape of Master Cheng Yen’s teaching on this section has been lost. Therefore, only the sutra passages have been kept without any additions.《無量義經講述》編纂依據一九七二年及一九七三年佛七開示《無量義經》?

Chapters include the following:

Lawsuits: These are actual lawsuits allowed into our nation's courts. The only way this chapter would be stranger is if it listed lawsuits so absurd they were not allowed into the courts.

Hunting and Fishing: I live in a small drinking town with a hunting and fishing problem.

Weather: This includes a column on the benefits of climate change, a subject that most news reports ignore, and why we in Walden, Colorado, are in favor of global warming.

Politics: The first column is my abortive attempt to run for president of the United States. Another is on what we should learn from the Greeks, and another on state stereotyping. Yes, that happened.

Internet English: This is the Age of the Text. A Pinch of Moonlight【電子書籍】[ Leo Greene ]

Demi-Lee Jenkins is a British teen whose only real talents are stubbornness, whistling, and a hint of magical ability. Blackbird is the rogue male fairy who adopted Demi as his 'little friend' when she was seven. A Pinch of Moonlight tells their intertwined stories, as they find themselves responsible for the fate of the magical realm of Annwn.
In unjust exile from Annwn, Blackbird is searching for Demi-lee and encounters her at midnight on the summer solstice. In the company of two friends, Vicky and Heledd, Demi-Lee accidentally cast her first spell and awakens the spirit of Aelwen, her witchy distant ancestor. Blackbird uses the situation to worm his way back into Demi's life, hiding the fact that he's in exile from Annwn and has lost all his magic powers. Blackbird and Aelwen offer to mentor Demi and develop her magic powers.
Heledd has just finished a degree in ancient Welsh literature, and already has expertise in myths and legends, so she's thrilled to have magical beings to help her with her research. Demi's cousin Vicky is less thrilled - as a sceptic with a degree in IT, it's a real shock to discover the world is less rational than she thought. Vicky is deeply distrustful of Blackbird, and when she saves him from hypothermia, he reveals the truth of his situation.
There is discrimination against fairies in Annwn, and Tefyn, the elfish First Citizen, shocked many when he took the fairy Pefryn (Blackbird's cousin) as his wife. Hafren, Chancellor of Annwn, loathes all fairies, but especially those such as Blackbird or Pefryn who aim for a Place in society.
Hafren manipulated Tefyn into going on a quest to earth, then made Tefyn believe Pefryn had cheated on him with Blackbird. During the ensuing fight, Tefyn broke Blackbird's wings and Blackbird permanently injured Tefyn with a blast of magic. Tefyn had Blackbird's wings removed with iron, neutralising the fairy's magic.
Although Tefyn soon realised Blackbird was innocent, it's high treason for a fairy to injure an elf, so Blackbird was exiled. However, there's a chance that Blackbird can make things right, if he can discover the magic to heal Tefyn. In Annwn, a damaged man cannot rule, and Hafren is using Tefyn's disability in an attempt to seize power.
The humans, Aelwen (now in a hybrid human/plant body) and Blackbird work together to find a spell to allow Blackbird to return to Annwn, and another to let him and Tefyn heal each other. The ritual is performed at the next full moon, but it doesn't work until Demi-Lee goes with him, to supply the essential spark of magic.
Once in Annwn, Blackbird is reunited with Pefryn, who is in internal exile, but he's soon captured by his enemies and left tied up and beaten outside the city gates. Pefryn takes Demi-Lee to rescue him, but Tefyn has got there first and taken Blackbird to the healers. Hafren is lying in wait for Demi-Lee and tricks her into Walking the Walk, a dangerous right of passage for which she's totally unprepared. Demi could just leave Annwn the way she came, but the nixies will disown her and Blackbird, leaving them trapped forever in their respective realms, never to meet again.
Demi successfully walks the walk, but her magic now burns like nuclear fuel, and there's a risk she may explode. Tefyn is healed, and publicly reclaims Blackbird and Pefryn. Blackbird's magic is restored, and Hafren is not just thwarted but left almost powerless after a spell backfires on him. This isn't the end though - both Demi-Lee and Vicky have fallen for Blackbird, and Hafren's supporters are determined to avenge him. Volume two continues the story...

Centuries. In the course of these inquiries, my attention was inevitably directed to the subject of Venereal disease, which exerted so powerful an influence at that epoch both on the physical and the moral life of nations. Accustomed as I was to regard History as being something more than a mere quasi-mechanical aggregation of facts, the observation was soon borne in upon me that only through a painstaking examination of the contemporary conditions of epidemic disease could the Venereal Disease of the period be really understood. Consequently, I felt I must isolate this terrible scourge of humanity from the general survey,ーso general as to be well-nigh all-embracing,ーand consider it as a ph?nomenon apart.
Once started on these lines, I occupied myself especially with the subject, and arrived at the surprising result, that the Venereal Disease of the XVth. Century owed its terrible characteristics solely and entirely to the contemporary exanthematic-typho?dal Genius Epidemicus, which made itself known in the South of Europe by petechial fevers and by the Sudor Anglicus (English Sweating-fever) in the North. I concluded further that the disease was not epidemic at all, merely liable to arise under the epidemic influence; and must consequently have been already extant before the arrival of the said Genius Epidemics.
Time and circumstances compelled me to remain satisfied provisionally with this general conclusion, and only after I had fixed my abode permanently at Halle, could I resume my earlier investigations. Yet again these were interrupted, partly by my work on the Diseases of the Skin for the Dictionary of Surgery edited by Prof. Blasius, partly by my Habilitation (formal entry on the Staff) at the University of that place, to which I had been repeatedly invited after the unexpected death of the late Dr. Baumgarten-Crusius. Eventually, I was enabled to devote the greater part of my leisure hours to this subject, one which in the meantime was never quite lost sight of. I began to sift and arrange the material I found accumulated, but in a short time I convinced myself that in its treatment I had to strike out a different road from that followed hitherto if I ever intended on my own account to reach important results; and I felt it would be impossible to complete the whole Survey in a single moderate-sized volume. Consequently, I proceeded to limit myself to the inquiry whether or no Venereal disease had been extant in Ancient times, and it is this investigation that I now publish as a first Part of the History of Venereal disease.
The general plan I have followed in my treatment of the subject is sufficiently explained in the Introduction; while a perusal of the text will show in what relation my investigations stand towards those of my predecessors, and at the same time to what extent these have been made use of, or indeed could be made use of, in my work. Owing to the very nature of the subject the Survey as a whole was bound to assume a critical character, dealing as it does not solely with the history of the Disease, but also with the examination of an extensive array of views and opinions already formulated. The conduct of this examination I leave the reader to judge of; but I believe I can confidently assert it was always the matter, never the man, that I subjected to critical treatment. Accordingly, I laid little stress on brilliant results, and made no effort to conceal lack of facts by dazzling hypotheses; instead, I made it my supreme object to come at the truth as near as possible and preferred to confess my ignorance, if the help and authorities I had at my disposal failed me, rather than advance propositions the baselessness of which a sober criticism is only too soon in a position to demonstrate.
“I imposed this law on myselfーto believe no man’s mere assertion; to depend on original authorities; to look at every passage with my own eyes, and read it in connexion with its context; to pick out the plain fact observed from the Chaos of hypotheses, and to accept as exact only what I could deduce from the authorities myself and see to be the evident purport of the observation,ーabsolutely unconcerned how each arbitrary theory might be affected or the sacrosanct authority of such or such a Scholar stand or fall. Why should we deem great men infallible? why find it impossible to honor them and yet dissent from them in your opinion?ーI felt I owed to my reader corresponding impartiality in the statement of the facts and arguments based upon them. If I was determined to take nothing on trust but to examine and see for myself, I could not reasonably demand faith from the reader and refuse to communicate to him the proofs and original documents I had drawn upon. It was no case of mere quotation from books,ーI was bound to lay open the original evidence for his inspection.” These words of Hensler’s I took as my guiding-principle, and if I have deviated from their standard in the Third Section, this only happened because the greater part of the passages there quoted have been repeatedly handled by my predecessors, and I feared to increase the bulk and consequently the cost of the Book to the prejudice of the reader.
I am well aware that the method I have adopted hardly corresponds with the taste of the present day; and if the public choose to find in my work nothing but an idle display of quotations, I cannot fail to be mortified. Nevertheless, I prefer to encounter, if needs be, the reproach of pedantry rather than that of superficiality. With the difficulties, I met with in connection with particular investigations I need not trouble the reader at greater length, as they are sufficiently familiar to everyone engaged in similar researches. I may be allowed to point out what a task was presented by the co-ordination of so considerable a number of scattered data. These I had, in the almost total absence of earlier works on the same subject, to collect mostly by my own reading from very widely separated Authors; and anything like the symmetry of arrangement was made still more difficult when, as occurred more than once, the discovery of a single passage forced me to entirely re-write a substantial part of my manuscript, often within a short time of its going to Press. For the same reason, the indulgent reader must excuse it, if here and there a later observation involves the supplementing and in some degree correcting of a previous statement,ーa thing that would have been done much more frequently had I not dreaded treating my material in too rambling a fashion. It would be quite easy now to subjoin in the form of appendices a multitude of additional proofs, of course only corroborating views already laid down,ーproofs I owed to further reading of the Ancient authors. However absolute completeness is impossible of attainment for the individual; and I can only hope the humble request I hereby express,ーa request addressed especially to professional students of Antiquity,ーthat others may favor me with contributions and remarks relevant to my subject, maybe not entirely without result. So later on perhaps the material accumulated may be utilized more efficiently if the interest manifested by the learned in my undertaking is of such a nature as to demand a re-mode画面が切り替わりますので、しばらくお待ち下さい。

Miss Lou had the instinctive wisdom to relate language to identity. As a people who have long since lost our identity, we continue to search for it.

There is an interrelationship between language ? the words we use ? and our identity. In that regard, Miss Lou helped us to remember who we are. However, mental slavery is still with us. While we continue to deny our own language, our way of expressing ourselves, there is no escaping the fact that our language is part of our identity as Jamaicans.

Although a lot of our unique cultural DNA disappeared during the Middle Passage, Miss Lou had the wisdom and the courage to grasp what remained of that DNA and give voice to the voiceless. She did it with such decisiveness that I have lived to see the day when Patwa, or Jamaican Language as it is properly called, has taken its rightful place as an important part of our identity.

That is Miss Lou’s legacy.

ーBeverly Manley-Duncan

Synopsis of the Journey.ーCrossing the Continent.ーA Great Midland City.ーUtah and the Mormons.ーThe Sierra Nevada.ーSan Francisco.ーA Herd of Sea-Lions.ーPossibilities of California.ーThe Love of Flowers.ーPublic School System.ーExcursion to the Yosemite.ーAn Indian Stronghold.ーDescription of the Valley.ーPassage of the Mountains.ーCaught in a Snow-Storm.ーA Forest of Feathers.ーThe Mammoth Trees of California.ーPassing the Golden Gate.ーVoyage across the Pacific.ーA Lost Day. On the morning of September 16, 1882, four individuals, two of whom were ladies and two gentlemen, comparative strangers to each other, met at the Fitchburg depot in Boston, drawn together by the common purpose of a trip round the world. Adding the conductor, Mr. Gno. Dattari, an intelligent and experienced courier, the little party numbered five persons. The latter individual is attached to the traveling agency of Thomas Cook & Son, London, the house undertaking, for the sum of two thousand dollars each, to pay all transportation and board bills in accordance with a very comprehensive itinerary. This embraced the passage across the continent of America and the Pacific Ocean to Japan, with a month of residence and travel in that country; thence to China and up the Pearl River to Canton; a week in Hong Kong; a thousand-mile voyage down the China Sea to the chief ports of the Malacca Straits; across the Indian Ocean to the Island of Ceylon, with a week for excursions therein; thence to India, with a liberal exploration of its principal cities, including a visit to the Himalayas in the extreme north; through the Sea of Arabia, the Straits of Babelmandeb, and the Red Sea to Egypt, Cairo, and Alexandria; through the Suez Canal and the Mediterranean to Italy, Malta, Gibraltar, France, and England. A reasonable length of time was allowed for each section of the route, including a voyage across the Atlantic to the starting-point. Any divergence from the prescribed route was to be at an additional charge, according to expenses incurred. The money was paid at the outset, and the agreement on both sides fulfilled to the entire satisfaction of all concerned. Thus much it has seemed well to premise for the information of the reader who proposes to follow our course due west, as presented in these pen-and-ink sketches of many lands. It should also be mentioned that the season of the year had been judiciously chosen, so as to bring us into each country at the most favorable period for its healthful and agreeable enjoyment, a calculation which is imperative for any one contemplating a journey of this character. Otherwise, the intense heat of the tropics, as well as the Arctic chills of the north, may render such a trip a hardship rather than a season of pleasure. The first day's experience served to acquaint the little party with each other, and no possible association can effect this so rapidly as traveling together, where individuals necessarily become inseparable, and where fixed traits of character must inevitably exhibit themselves. Mr. Mーー and his daughter, as also the author of these notes, were Bostonians; the fourth person being a Miss Dーー, of Yorkshire, England, who came hither to make the long circuit of the globe. Even American parlor-cars, which embrace as much of domestic comfort as is compatible with their legitimate purpose, could not prevent our being somewhat fatigued by an unbroken journey of over five hundred miles, when we reached Niagara Falls at two o'clock in the morning. And yet the day seemed short by reason of the varied and beautiful scenery of the Hoosac Tunnel route, particularly in the region of the Deerfield Valley, and also west of the Massachusetts state line. The abundant foliage was in its autumnal prime, not yet having been touched by the wand of the Frost King, while the teeming fields gave evidence both of fertility of soil and skilled cultivation. The neat farm-houses were ornamented by creeping vines, and tiny flower-gardens in their fronts. Tall conical haystacks flanked the spacious, well-filled barns; big yellow pumpkins dotted the half-cleared cornfields; and handsome groups of cattle quietly ruminated in the pastures. A picturesque line of beehives, half a dozen happy children at play before the house door, and the sturdy master of the thrifty scene, leaning over the fence to exchange pleasant words with a passing neighbor on horseback, were frequent rural pictures, which were afterwards contrasted with those of other countries

After Royal Navy captain Sir John Franklin disappeared in the Arctic in 1846 while seeking the Northwest Passage, the search for his two ships, Erebus and Terror, and survivors of his expedition became one of the most exhaustive quests of the 19th century. Despite tantalizing clues, the ships were never found, and the fate of Franklin’s expedition passed into legend as one of the North’s great and enduring mysteries.

Anthony Dalton explores the eventful and fascinating life of this complex and intelligent man, beginning with his early sea voyages and arduous overland explorations in the Arctic. After years in Malta and Tasmania, Franklin realized his dream of returning to the Far North; it would be his last expedition. Drawing from evidence found by 19th-century Arctic explorers following in Franklin’s footsteps and investigations by 20th-century historians and archaeologists, Dalton retraces the route of the lost ships and recounts the sad tale of Franklin, his officers and men in their final agonizing months.

Dreams of Lies and Delusions【電子書籍】[ James Polus ]

A fictitious historical tale set in a lost civilization of South Asia, “Dreams of Lies and Delusions” is a speculation about the existence of elaborate texts detailing the people and events of their times, well before the appearance of books. Like many of the sophisticated cities in ancient times, this fanciful chronicle of a lost writing system did not survive the passage of time, shifting climates, earthquakes, floods, and destructive invasions. Imaginative oral traditions filled the void for thousands of years. The story depicts the challenges of justice, the fight for equality, and the human drive for purpose. Malevolent and baneful characters influenced by pride, revenge, and desire for power show the twisted, murderous influence of extreme personality disorders, manifested in dreams and imaginary visitations. A vengeful ruler, a serial killer, and a religious zealot poison their minds with lies and delusions, fomenting evil acts and ultimate self-destruction. Remarkable women characters fill the pages with acts of courage, wisdom, and shrewdness. These characters remind us of the untapped potentiality of women in every aspect of life across the world, particularly in some cultures chained to conservative ideologies.

Forty Years Tomorrow: 2024 rewrite【電子書籍】[ Paul S. Medland ]

In the serene tranquil hills of Wales, where the whispers of ancient tales mingle with the soft caress of the breeze, lies a story that defies the bounds of time and imagination.
"Forty Years Tomorrow" beckons you into a world where reality is as elusive as the mist that shrouds the landscape, and the echoes of a past long forgotten resound with the force of thunder.
It was the year 1974 when the fabric of one man's existence was torn asunder by the cruel hand of fate. Abducted from the hillside, he vanished into the abyss. His very existence was erased by the machinations of a shadowy conspiracy, reported dead in a staged bike crash, his life became a footnote in the annals of official records, a mere whisper in the winds of history.
But time is a relentless force, and destiny is a cunning mistress. In 2012, against all odds, he is returned to the very hillside where his journey into oblivion began, untouched by the passage of four decades, his age frozen in the amber of lost years. Yet, as he steps back into the world he once knew, naked and penniless, and without memory of his many years away, he finds himself a stranger in a world that has moved on without him.
His loss is staggering, his family, his friends, and his very identity are all gone, swallowed by the voracious maw of time. No longer officially existing, he is adrift in a sea of anonymity, grappling with the shards of a shattered past and the spectre of a future unknown.
But amidst the chaos, there is a flicker of defiance, a glimmer of hope that refuses to be extinguished. "Forty Years Tomorrow" is a journey into the heart of darkness and redemption, where the lines between truth and fiction blur like the shifting sands of time. From the hidden depths of government establishments to the shadowy corridors of power, our protagonist embarks on a quest for justice and vindication, to prove his story is true, unearthing the buried secrets that threaten to unravel the very fabric of reality.
But the journey does not end there. As he emerges from the shadows, still hunted by the ghosts of his past, he must navigate the treacherous waters of modern life, where technology reigns supreme, attitudes have evolved, and the currents of change run swift and deep. With courage as his compass and resilience as his shield, he embarks on a new chapter, forging bonds of love and kinship in a world that once deemed him lost.
"Forty Years Tomorrow" is a testament to the indomitable spirit of the human soul, a celebration of resilience in the face of adversity, and a reminder that even in the darkest of nights, there is always the promise of a new dawn. So, dear reader, brace yourself for a journey that will take you to the very edge of existence and beyond, where the past and the present collide in a symphony of hope and redemption.
To prove to non-believers that there is more to this world than their eyes can see.

Vasco Nunez De Balboa by Frederick A. Ober. Balboa is most famous for discovering the Pacific ocean, but this was but one incident in a swashbuckling life.

After running amok in Hispaniola, Balboa escaped from the island by stowing away in a barrel, and founded the first Spanish settlement in the region of Darien (modern Panama) by first battling, and then making alliances with several important chieftains.

After making his famous discovery he lost control of the colony, and for the next few years was at loggerheads with the new governor Pedrarias, his arch-nemesis. It was a battle he ultimately lost, along with his head on the executioners block.

Balboa was a young man when Columbus returned from discovering America, and as soon as he was able, he gained passage to the New World. After serving as a military hand on an expedition to the coast of Panama, he settled on Hispaniola to try to make his fortune.

Scorpions for Breakfast My Fight Against Special Interests, Liberal Media, and Cynical Politicos to Secure America's Border【電子書籍】[ Jan Brewer ]

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】Scorpions for Breakfast My Fight Against Special Interests, Liberal Media, and Cynical Politicos to Secure America's Border【電子書籍】[ Jan Brewer ]

Sometime after dark on March 27, 2010, Arizona rancher Robert Krentz was found dead next to his four-wheeler on the grounds of his ranch on the Arizona-Mexico border. Krentz and his dog, Blue, had been missing since that morning. They were last heard from when he radioed his brother to say that he’d found an illegal alien on the property and was going to offer him assistance. The man Krentz encountered that day shot and killed him and his dog, without warning, before escaping to Mexico.

It’s difficult to overstate the impact of Krentz’s death, which turned the issue of Arizona’s unsecured borderーa crisis that the federal government had repeatedly ignoredーinto a national concern. As Arizona sheriff Larry Dever said in his testimony before the Senate Homeland Security Committee, “We cannot sit by while our citizens are terrorized, robbed, and murdered by ruthless and desperate people who enter our country illegally.” This momentum helped pass SB 1070, a bill that authorizes local law enforcement under certain conditions to question persons reasonably suspected of being illegal aliens, which Governor Jan Brewer and the state legislature had been working on for months. With the passage of this controversial bill, the state of Arizona became ground zero in the impassioned debate over illegal immigration. The Democrats and the media went into overdrive, denouncing the state and its governor as racists and Nazis.

Governor Brewer, a lifelong Arizona resident with deep ties to the community, was first elected to the Arizona House of Representatives in 1982, and hasn’t lost an election since. As a state official, she watched with increasing dismay as illegal immigration exploded across Arizona’s border, and noticed the devastating effect it was having on the state. Causing an escalation in violence, an influx of drugs, and prisons and hospitals to fill to overflowing, this problem was not only wreaking havoc on the moral fabric of the community but placing an even greater strain on Arizona’s beleaguered health, educational, and social welfare networks. Growing frustrated with the failure of the federal government to respond to her pleas for assistance, Governor Brewer led the state to action. Scorpions for Breakfast is Brewer’s commonsense account of her fight to secure our nation’s border in the face of persistent federal inaction. Her book is vital reading for all Americans interested in the real change that can happen when local leaders take the initiative to preserve our country and our laws.

Cracking Open A Memoir of Struggling, Passages, and Transformations【電子書籍】[ Ph.D. Bud Harris ]

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】Cracking Open A Memoir of Struggling, Passages, and Transformations【電子書籍】[ Ph.D. Bud Harris ]

An Engaging Book...Thoughtful, Searching, and Surprisingly Personal

Dr. Harris is a Jungian analyst, author, and life teacher dedicated to the passionate pursuit of self-exploration and the art of living a well-lived life. By being willing to share his own very personal journaling, he shows us the importance of reflecting about our lives in an ongoing way...and even the importance of revisiting these reflections.

Through his re-membering and storytelling, he brings to light the interface between dramatic periods of transformation in his own life and reveals how "past" history is always penetrating the present. During these reflections, it becomes clear how deeply he is wrestling like Jacob with the angel, as he attempts to grasp the creative patterns of life that are trying to be lived through him.

Dr. Harris tells about his surprise when his journaling takes on a life of its own, and shifts like scenes in a dream - a dream created by his greater Self. Like any serious quest, his story has a haunting history with terrors and resistances along the way. He recounts the shocks, surprises, and hard work necessary to pursue self-knowledge and admits how living with awareness and the search for healing and wholeness brings about suffering to his ego, his everyday self. Yet, he tenderly leads us into the spiritual depths of passion, transformation, and renewal, and shares how his devotion to this work forces his transformation and helps him to tap into the joy of creation. Belonging on an Island Birds, Extinction, and Evolution in Hawai'i【電子書籍】[ Daniel Lewis ]

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】Belonging on an Island Birds, Extinction, and Evolution in Hawai'i【電子書籍】[ Daniel Lewis ]

“A book devoted to the beauty of [Hawaiian] birds . . . is a welcome event. [It] will be both an elegy and an important record of what has been lost to us all.” ーW. S. Merwin, Pulitzer Prize?winning poet, The Shadow of Sirius

A lively, rich natural history of Hawaiian birds that challenges existing ideas about what constitutes biocultural nativeness and belonging

This natural history takes readers on a thousand-year journey as it explores the Hawaiian Islands’ beautiful birds and a variety of topics including extinction, evolution, survival, conservationists and their work, and, most significantly, the concept of belonging. Author Daniel Lewis, an award-winning historian and globe-traveling amateur birder, builds this lively text around the stories of four speciesーthe Stumbling Moa-Nalo, the Kaua‘I ‘O‘o, the Palila, and the Japanese White-Eye.

Lewis offers innovative ways to think about what it means to be native and proposes new definitions that apply to people as well as to birds. Being native, he argues, is a relative state influenced by factors including the passage of time, charisma, scarcity, utility to others, short-term evolutionary processes, and changing relationships with other organisms. This book also describes how bird conservation started in Hawai‘i, and the naturalists and environmentalists who did extraordinary work.

“With insight, humor, scholarship, and love, Daniel Lewis illustrates how and why the question of who or what “belongs” somewhere is both deceptively complex and increasingly important in today’s Anthropocene world.” ーRobert J. Cabin, author of Restoring Paradise: Rethinking and Rebuilding Nature in Hawai‘i

“Lewis’s fascinating story of Hawaii is, in microcosm, the history of humans on our fragile Earth.” ーBruce M. Beehler, National Museum of Natural History, Smithsonian Institution
