Musings of a Private Man【電子書籍】[ William A. Horstman ]

The most important thing I learned about Bill was his experience with Carl Sagan’s book Contact. There is a story in this collection that Bill wrote called Contact. It’s not a finished piece, nor is it a very cohesive piece, but the experience he is trying to capture is one of the most fascinating and extraordinary events I have ever heard of, and it’s something I will never forget. As you’ll read, when Bill was about 30 years old, he was on a flight home from California, and he had the book Contact that he began reading on that flight. Early in the book a few things jump out to Bill. First, the location of the novel begins in a Wisconsin town near a lake, just like how Bill had grown up near Lake Michigan. Then we find out the main character has lost her father while she’s in grade school, in a sudden way, just as Bill had. But to confirm that this book, which Carl Sagan wrote in 1985, was indeed connected to Bill, was the passage that read his exact name. The sentence is: Billy Horstman, who sat next to her, gently reached out and placed his hand over hers. This book was created by Sally Riessen Hunt (Horstman), Brooke Laufer and Barbara Monier, who together lovingly gathered and organized Bill’s writings with the shared conviction that he was a wondrous man.

The Republic of the Future: Socialism a Reality【電子書籍】[ Anna Bowman Dodd ]

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】The Republic of the Future: Socialism a Reality【電子書籍】[ Anna Bowman Dodd ]

Dear Hannevig: At last, as you see, my journey is safely accomplished, and I am fairly landed in the midst of this strange socialistic society. To say that I was landed, is to make use of so obsolete an expression that it must entirely fail to convey to you a true idea of the processes of the journey. Had I writtenーI was safely shot into the countryーthis would much more graphically describe to you the method of my arrival. You may remember, perhaps, that before starting I found myself in very grave doubt as to which route to takeーwhether to come by balloon or by tunnel. As the latter route would enable me to enjoy an entirely novel spectacle, that of viewing sub-marine scenery, I chose, and wisely I now know, to come by the Pneumatic Tube Electric Company. The comforts and luxuries of this sub-marine route are beyond belief. The perfection of the contrivances for supplying hot and cold air, for instance, during the journey, are such that the passengers are enabled to have almost any temperature at command. The cars are indeed marked 70° Fahr., 80° and 100°. One buys one’s seat according to his taste for climate. Many of the travellers, I noticed, booked themselves for the bath department, remaining the entire journey in the Turkish, Russian, vapor or plunge departmentsーas the various baths attached to this line surpass a Roman voluptuary’s dream of such luxuries. I, however, never having been through the great tunnel before, was naturally more interested in what was passing so swiftly before my eyes. The speed at which we were shot was terrificーfive miles to the minuteーmaking the journey of three thousand miles just ten hours long. In spite of the swiftness of our transit, we were enabled by the aid of the instantaneous photographic process, as applied to opera-glasses and telescopes, to feel that we lost nothing by the rapidity of our meteor-like passage. I was totally unprepared for the beauties and the novelties which met my eye at every turn. The sight-seers’ car is admirably arranged. Fancy being able to take in all the wonders of ocean-land through large glass port-holes in the concave sides of circular cars. The tube itself, which is of iron, enormously thick, has glass sides, also of huge thickness, running parallel with the windows of the car so that the view is unobstructed. The sensations awakened, therefore, both by the novelty of the situation and by the wonders we passed in review, combined to make the journey thrillingly exciting. We were swept, for instance, past armies of fishes, beautiful to behold in such masses, shimmering in their opalescent armor as they rose above, or sank out of sight into the depths below. The sudden depressions and abrupt elevations of the sea-level made the scenery full of diversity. There was a great abundance of color, with the vivid crimson of the coralline plants and the delicate pinks and yellows of the many varieties of the sub-marine flora. It seemed at times as if we were caught in a liquid cloud of amber, or were to be enmeshed in a grove of giant sea-weeds.

In "The Lost House," Richard Harding Davis transports readers into a richly woven narrative centered around a mysterious estate that serves as a microcosm of early 20th-century American society. With a keen eye for detail, Davis employs his signature vivid prose and a blend of realism and romanticism to depict themes of loss, memory, and the passage of time. The story unfolds through intricately developed characters, each reflecting the complexities of human relationship within the constraints of societal expectations, making it a quintessential work of its time. Richard Harding Davis, an esteemed journalist and fiction writer, was deeply influenced by the changing landscapes of America and the shifting values of the Gilded Age. His experiences travelling and reporting from various socio-political contexts infused his writing with a depth that resonates throughout "The Lost House." Davis's affinity for historical detail and his understanding of human nature underscore his desire to illuminate the societal flaws and emotional truths of his era, making this novel both a personal and cultural exploration. The American Mind: The E. T. Earl Lectures【電子書籍】[ Bliss Perry ]

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】The American Mind: The E. T. Earl Lectures【電子書籍】[ Bliss Perry ]

Many years ago, as a student in a foreign university, I remember attacking, with the complacency of youth, a German history of the English drama, in six volumes. I lost courage long before the author reached the age of Elizabeth, but I still recall the subject of the opening chapter: it was devoted to the physical geography of Great Britain. Writing, as the good German professor did, in the triumphant hour of Taine's theory as to the significance of place, period, and environment in determining the character of any literary production, what could be more logical than to begin at the beginning? Have not the chalk cliffs guarding the southern coast of England, have not the fatness of the midland counties and the soft rainy climate of a North Atlantic island, and the proud, tenacious, self-assertive folk that are bred there, all left their trace upon A Midsummer Night's Dream, and Every Man in his Humour and She Stoops to Conquer? Undoubtedly. Latitude and longitude, soil and rainfall and food-supply, racial origins and crossings, political and social and economic conditions, must assuredly leave their marks upon the mental and artistic productiveness of a people and upon the personality of individual writers. Taine, who delighted to point out all this, and whose English Literature remains a monument of the defects as well as of the advantages of his method, was of course not the inventor of the climatic theory. It is older than Aristotle, who discusses it in his treatise on Politics. It was a topic of interest to the scholars of the Renaissance. Englishmen of the seventeenth century, with an unction of pseudo-science added to their natural patriotism, discovered in the English climate one of the reasons of England's greatness. Thomas Sprat, writing in 1667 on the History of the Royal Society, waxes bold and asserts: "If there can be a true character given of the Universal Temper of any Nation under Heaven, then certainly this must be ascribed to our countrymen, that they have commonly an unaffected sincerity, that they love to deliver their minds with a sound simplicity, that they have the middle qualities between the reserved, subtle southern and the rough, unhewn northern people, that they are not extremely prone to speak, that they are more concerned what others will think of the strength than of the fineness of what they say, and that a universal modesty possesses them. These qualities are so conspicuous and proper to the soil that we often hear them objected to us by some of our neighbor Satyrists in more disgraceful expressions.... Even the position of our climate, the air, the influence of the heaven, the composition of the English blood, as well as the embraces of the Ocean, seem to join with the labours of the Royal Society to render our country a Land of Experimental Knowledge." The excellent Sprat was the friend and executor of the poet Cowley, who has in the Preface to his Poems a charming passage about the relation of literature to the external circumstances in which it is written. "If wit be such a Plant that it scarce receives heat enough to keep it alive even in the summer of our cold Clymate, how can it choose but wither in a long and a sharp winter? a warlike, various and a tragical age is best to write of, but worst to write in." And he adds this, concerning his own art of poetry: "There is nothing that requires so much serenity and chearfulness of spirit; it must not be either overwhelmed with the cares of Life, or overcast with the Clouds of Melancholy and Sorrow, or shaken and disturbed with the storms of injurious Fortune; it must, like the Halcyon, have fair weather to breed in.

The Service【電子書籍】[ Henry David Thoreau ]

When some twenty years ago there were sent to me from the portfolios of Emerson papers by different friends of ours, I found among them an essay of twenty-two full manuscript pages, in the familiar script of Thoreau, tied together with knots of faded pink ribbon, like his College Commencement "part," but with no numbering of the pages. If made up, as it probably was (according to Thoreau's constant custom), from his Journals, the fact cannot be well ascertained, so many of the entries before 1841 having been destroyed or lost. More than any of his published writings, it displays that taste for paradox which often is found in authors of a singular originality, and of such a profound imagination as Thoreau had. Its form was perhaps suggested by the discourses on Peace and Non-resistance which in 1840 were so numerous in New England; while the native pugnacity of Thoreau provoked him to take up the cause of war and persist in the apostolic symbolism of the soldier of the Lord, and the Middle-Age crusader. Human life is his topic, and he views it with an Oriental scope of thought, in which distinctions of Time and Space are lost in the wide prospect of Eternity and Immortality. Curiously at variance with this is the play upon words,ーa habit which he never outgrew; while his wonderful glances at outward nature, always interpreted symbolically of the spiritual life, indicate how early and intense was that perception of the aspects of the universe which first (and perhaps chiefly still) awakened an interest in Thoreau's pages. Characteristic, too, are his ecstasies concerning Music, of which he was ever the enthusiastic votary. Thus in a passage from some Journal, cited by Ellery Channing in his rich chaos of selections in "Thoreau the Poet-Naturalist," he says: "What a significant comment on our life is the least strain of music! When I hear music I fear no danger; I am invulnerable; I see no foe; I am related to the earliest times and the latest. I hear music below; it washes the dust off my life, and everything I look at. The field of my life becomes a boundless plain, glorious totread, with no death or disappointment at the end of it. In the light of this strain there is no Thou nor I. It paints the landscape suddenly; it is at once another land,ーthe abode of poetry."

When Breath Was Drink For Ghosts【電子書籍】[ Peter Strayer ]

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】When Breath Was Drink For Ghosts【電子書籍】[ Peter Strayer ]

When Breath Was Drink for Ghosts is a meditation on love, loss, faith, and the aching beauty of life. In this collection of 200 poems, poet Peter Strayer offers a voice both intimate and expansive, weaving together deeply personal experiences with universal themes that transcend time and place. His poetry moves like memoryーsometimes sharp and immediate, sometimes blurred and elusiveーpulling the reader into a nonlinear yet profoundly structured journey, much like the human soul itself. At the heart of Strayer's work is a reckoning with pain and the longing for redemption. For example, in his poem 'Soliloquy Three (Sonnet 84)', he crafts a haunting portrait of regret and the irreversible consequences of choice. Through vivid imageryーbruises that never quite heal, blood that drips onto spoken viewsーStrayer captures the agony of lost dreams and the slow, often futile search for solace. His poetry does not shy away from suffering but faces it with an honesty that is both bracing and compassionate. And yet, this collection is not merely an elegy to pain. Strayer's work, while steeped in grief, carries the promise of renewal within it. His words stretch toward beauty, toward transcendence, toward the quiet moments that sustain us. There are pastoral poems that celebrate the rhythms of nature and human existenceーpoems that remind us of the simple joys of wind over fields, the hush of morning, and the sacred ordinary. Some love poems, tender and unguarded, speak to the fragility and strength of the human heart. Some spiritual poems wrestle with doubt and belief, with the tension between silence and revelation. Strayer's poetry is both accessible and deeply layered, drawing from classical, philosophical, and spiritual traditions while remaining rooted in the immediacy of the modern world. He writes with a timeless quality, yet his work speaks directly to the wounds of our ageーthe fragmentation, the longing for meaning, and the need for poetry as both refuge and reckoning. As fellow poet Jonathan Jackson writes in his endorsement, "When Breath Was Drink for Ghosts arrives at a time when the world is in desperate need of poetry's healing balm." More than just a collection of verse, this book is an invitationーto pause, reflect, and feel. Each poem asks the reader to step into a space of quiet contemplation, listen to the echoes of their longing, and perhaps find something of themselves in Strayer's carefully chosen words. Whether exploring the depths of sorrow or celebrating the fleeting brilliance of joy, *When Breath Was Drink for Ghosts* lingers in the mind and heart long after the final page is turned. It is not just a bookーit is an experience, a mirror, a testament to the beauty and burden of being alive. When Breath Was Drink for Ghosts is a book for those who seek depth in language and meaning. It will resonate with readers who find solace in poetry that does not flinch from the realities of pain, yet still reaches for beauty. Lovers of classic and contemporary verse alike will appreciate Strayer's blend of accessibility and complexity, his ability to weave the personal with the universal. Those drawn to the works of Rainer Maria Rilke, T.S. Eliot, or Gerard Manley Hopkins will find a kindred spirit in these pages. Likewise, readers with a contemplative natureーthose who wrestle with questions of faith, loss, and the passage of timeーwill discover in this collection a voice that speaks to their own inner journey. Whether for the seasoned poetry reader or someone simply seeking words that resonate in a noisy world, *When Breath Was Drink for Ghosts* offers a space to linger, reflect, and remember what it means to feel deeply.

Gladys lost during World War II, Wendell “Del” Pierce Drew, a member of the elite RAF Pathfinder Force with Bomber Command who hailed from the tiny farming settlement of Radisson, Saskatchewan.

With a couple of old photos and a few anecdotes to go on, the siblings set out to uncover Del’s story, discovering a rich history of people searching for adventure or a better life. From the Canadian prairie to London’s Notting Hill, to the shores of the North Sea and beyond, Following the Echoes uncovers stories obscured by the passage of time and reflects on the ripple effect that the pulling of literal and metaphorical triggers can have on our lives.

Exploring the theme of grief, the book recounts an incredible event in Gladys’s life, when her grief over Del suddenly and dramatically resurfaced one day in 1993ーforty-nine years after his deathーas well as the story of Del’s parents, Albert and Achsah Drew, revealing how they experienced unfathomable loss long before losing their son in the war.

This is the first book to examine in depth the fate of Lancaster JB707, which Del and his crewmates were aboard when they disappeared in July 1944, piecing together the events of the last sortie. The reader is taken along the crew’s final moments, even learning who likely pulled the fateful trigger that led to their demise.

Finally, the siblings describe how “following the echoes” of incredible coincidences and connections led them to a place of deep awe and admiration, as well as profound gratitude, especially for those in Bomber Command. This is a poignant story of love and loss but also one of a legacy extending into the present, uniting families, friends, and fellow citizens through exploring the richness and tragedy in the lives of those who built Canada into a great nation, and how the Greatest Generation sacrificed to preserve itーlest we forget.

So often, we look to our careers, our relationships, and society to define those things for us. This is not a fault on our part; it is a groan. That groan is what leads to a depressed state of mind and anxious thoughts. But in this book, you will finally come to know why you have that groan and Who can fix it. This will not be a short-term fix like medication and therapy. This will be transformative, empowering, and peace-filling.

Your life will never be the same after reading The Activated Word.

It may seem like the Enemy has won over your mind, but I can assure you that God ALWAYS has the final say. Before you were formed, He knew you, loved you, and purposed you. So rise up, woman of God, and let's activate!

Praise about The Activated Word

"I suffered from debilitating anxiety and depression for 50 years. The morning after I read The Activated Word, rather than awaking with my usual dread, I woke with a feeling of lightness. As I went about my morning, I felt different. A few hours into my day, I realized that my anxiety was gone. The fear, worry, and stress that occupied a large portion of my brain most of the time had been quieted. I felt astonishingly normal. That feeling persisted for a week or two.

When the anxiety began to creep back into my consciousness, I again read The Activated Word. Again, I felt better. For weeks now, when I feel the familiar fear coming back, I read a prayer or a passage from Adriel's book, and it always soothes my soul. I highly recommend The Activated Word to anyone wanting to vanquish anxiety!" -Jennifer

Losing the News The Future of the News that Feeds Democracy【電子書籍】[ Alex Jones ]

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】Losing the News The Future of the News that Feeds Democracy【電子書籍】[ Alex Jones ]

In Losing the News, Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Alex S. Jones offers a probing look at the epochal changes sweeping the media, changes which are eroding the core news that has been the essential food supply of our democracy. At a time of dazzling technological innovation, Jones says that what stands to be lost is the fact-based reporting that serves as a watchdog over government, holds the powerful accountable, and gives citizens what they need. In a tumultuous new media era, with cutthroat competition and panic over profits, the commitment of the traditional news media to serious news is fading. Indeed, as digital technology shatters the old economic model, the news media is making a painful passage that is taking a toll on journalistic values and standards. Journalistic objectivity and ethics are under assault, as is the bastion of the First Amendment. Jones characterizes himself not as a pessimist about news, but a realist. The breathtaking possibilities that the web offers are undeniable, but at what cost? Pundits and talk show hosts have persuaded Americans that the crisis in news is bias and partisanship. Not so, says Jones. The real crisis is the erosion of the iron core of news, something that hurts Republicans and Democrats alike. Losing the News depicts an unsettling situation in which the American birthright of fact-based, reported news is in danger. But it is also a call to arms to fight to keep the core of news intact. Praise for the hardcover: "Thoughtful." --New York Times Book Review "An impassioned call to action to preserve the best of traditional newspaper journalism." --The San Francisco Chronicle "Must reading for all Americans who care about our country's present and future. Analysis, commentary, scholarship and excellent writing, with a strong, easy-to-follow narrative about why you should care, makes this a candidate for one of the best books of the year." --Dan Rather

Kitchener's Mob ADVENTURES OF AN AMERICAN IN THE BRITISH ARMY【電子書籍】[ James Norman Hall ]

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】Kitchener's Mob ADVENTURES OF AN AMERICAN IN THE BRITISH ARMY【電子書籍】[ James Norman Hall ]

Hall is the perfect adventurer. He could sense opportunity and then blend almost seamlessly into an exciting new situation. As a well-educated American, he had a detached but perceptive view of British society and the rush in the summer of 1914 to create a massive new army. Most important, he had a rare eloquencer as a writer.

When World War I broke out, Britain had an army of about 160,000. Millions were quickly recruited and trained. Hall became part of this "mob" which became the stubborn army that stopped Germany's domination of Europe. "Mob" was the soldiers' term; Hall explains, "They fastened the name upon themselves, lest the world at large should think they regarded themselves too highly."

In a telling passage, he describes how the French go to war "for Glorious France, France the Unconquerable." It's much the same as the attitude of Americans who fight to bring democracy to lesser peoples. The Brits are quite different; Hall typifies their attitude as "Tommy shoulders his rifle and departs for the four corners of the world on a bloomin' fine 'oliday! A railway journey and a sea voyage in one! Blimey! Not 'arf bad, wot?"

Yet, such men walked into one of the bloodiest wars in history. In 1964 - 1973, the U.S. had 58,193 deaths in the Vietnam War. In one morning on the Somme, the Brits lost 60,000 dead. Who today would think of being sent to Iraq, where 4,000 Americans have lost their lives in five years, as "a bloomin' fine 'oliday"?

Hall describes daily life in the trenches, where he manned a machine gun and was told never to fire it unless countering a German attack. Otherwise, it would be quickly spotted and ferociously shelled. He explains, "W'en you goes out at night to 'ave a go at Fritzie, you always tykes yer gun sommers else. If you don't, you'll 'ave Minnie an' Busy Bertha an' all the rest o' the Krupp children comin' over to see w'ere you live."

It's Hall's first book. He later gained well-deserved fame with Charles Nordhoff in writing 'Mutiny on the Bounty' and other books about Tahiti and the South Pacific. This book, written at the age of 33 and before he became famous, may be his most relaxed, informal, authentic and best work. It's a worthy tribute to 'Kitchener's Mob' and all those who call themselves Brits.

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】The World Broke in Two Virginia Woolf, T.S. Eliot, D.H. Lawrence, E.M. Forster, and the Year That Changed Literature【電子書籍】[ Bill Goldstein ]

A Lambda Literary Awards Finalist
Named one of the best books of 2017 by NPR's Book Concierge

A revelatory narrative of the intersecting lives and works of revered authors Virginia Woolf, T. S. Eliot, E. M. Forster and D. H. Lawrence during 1922, the birth year of modernism

The World Broke in Two tells the fascinating story of the intellectual and personal journeys four legendary writers, Virginia Woolf, T. S. Eliot, E. M. Forster, and D. H. Lawrence, make over the course of one pivotal year. As 1922 begins, all four are literally at a loss for words, confronting an uncertain creative future despite success in the past. The literary ground is shifting, as Ulysses is published in February and Proust’s In Search of Lost Time begins to be published in England in the autumn. Yet, dismal as their prospects seemed in January, by the end of the year Woolf has started Mrs. Dalloway, Forster has, for the first time in nearly a decade, returned to work on the novel that will become A Passage to India, Lawrence has written Kangaroo, his unjustly neglected and most autobiographical novel, and Eliot has finishedーand published to acclaimー“The Waste Land."

As Willa Cather put it, “The world broke in two in 1922 or thereabouts,” and what these writers were struggling with that year was in fact the invention of modernism. Based on original research, Bill Goldstein's The World Broke in Two captures both the literary breakthroughs and the intense personal dramas of these beloved writers as they strive for greatness.

Please note: This is a companion version & not the original book. Sample Book Insights: #1 I could never get past the first six or seven pages of Heart of Darkness, a difficult novella published in 1899. I liked the ominous atmosphere, and I was glad to get out. #2 I wanted to be an academic like Lyndall Gordon, who had a love of literature and shaped and framed it. I was surprised and dismayed when she said she didn’t see me in that role. #3 I was not ready for Heart of Darkness when I first read it. It was a book that took me a long time to love. I thought that the men might enjoy the gruesome, disturbing parts of the story, but I never lost sight of the fact that it had taken me a long time to love it. #4 I began the book club by reading a little bit of the background information on Joseph Conrad and his journey upriver in the Congo. I then read a passage from a letter he wrote to his aunt about his health, which was far from good.

The Line Combat in Korea, January-February 1951【

Many combat veterans refuse to discuss their experiences on the line. With the passage of time and the unreliability of memory, it becomes difficult to understand the true nature of war. In The Line: Combat in Korea, January?February 1951, retired Army colonel William T. Bowers uses firsthand, eyewitness accounts of the Korean War to offer readers an intimate look at the heroism and horror of the battlefront. These interviews of soldiers on the ground are particularly telling because they were conducted by Army historians immediately following combat. Known as the "forgotten war," the action in Korea lasted from June 1950 until July 1953 and was particularly savage for its combatants. During the first few months of the war, American and U.N. soldiers conducted rapid advances and hasty withdrawals, risky amphibious landings and dangerous evacuations, all while facing extreme weather conditions. In early 1951, the first winter of the war, frigid cold and severe winds complicated combat operations. As U.N. forces in Korea retreated from an oncoming Chinese and North Korean attack, U.S. commanders feared they would be forced to withdraw from occupation and admit to a Communist victory. Using interviews and extensive historical research, The Line analyzes how American troops fought the enemy to a standstill over this pivotal two-month period, reversing the course of the war. In early 1951, the war had nearly been lost, but by February's end, there existed the possibility of preserving an independent South Korea. Bowers compellingly illustrates how a series of small successes at the regiment, battalion, company, platoon, squad, and soldier levels ensured that the line was held against the North Korean enemy. The Line is the first of three volumes detailing combat during the Korean War. Each book focuses on the combat experiences of individual soldiers and junior leaders. Bowers enhances our understanding of combat by providing explanatory analysis and supplemental information from official records, giving readers a complete picture of combat operations in this understudied theatre. Through searing firsthand accounts and an intense focus on this brief but critical time frame, The Line offers new insights into U.S. military operations during the twentieth century and guarantees that the sacrifices of these courageous soldiers will not be lost to history.

The Saviour of the World【電子書籍】[ B. B. Warfield ]

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】The Saviour of the World【電子書籍】[ B. B. Warfield ]

I wish to speak to you to-day of the parable of the prodigal son, or, as it is becoming very common to call it, perhaps with greater exactness, the parable of the lost son. I shall not read it to you again. It has already been read in the lesson for the day. And in any event it is too familiar to require that you should be reminded even of the minuter details of the narrative. Probably no passage of the Scriptures is more widely known or more universally admired. The conversation and literature of devotion are full of allusions to it. And in the conversation and literature of the world it has far from an unhonoured place.

It owes the high appreciation it has won, no doubt, in large part to the exquisiteness of its literary form. From this point of view it fully deserves not only the measured praise of a Grotius, but the enthusiastic exclamations of a Trench. It is “the finest of Christ’s parables, filled with true feeling, and painted in the most beautiful colours.” It is “the pearl and crown of all the parables of Scripture.” Nothing could exceed the chaste perfection of the narrative, the picturesque truth of its portraiture, the psychological delicacy of its analysis. Here is a gem of story-telling, which must be pronounced nothing less than artistically perfect, whether viewed in its general impression, or in the elaboration of its details. We must add to its literary beauty, however, the preciousness of the lesson it conveys before we account for the place it has won for itself in the hearts of men. In this setting of fretted gold, a marvel of the artificer, there lies a priceless jewel; and this jewel is displayed to such advantage by its setting that men cannot choose but see and admire.

Firebrands The Untold Story of Four Women Who Made and Unmade Prohibition【電子書籍】[ Gioia Diliberto ]

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】Firebrands The Untold Story of Four Women Who Made and Unmade Prohibition【電子書籍】[ Gioia Diliberto ]

Guaranteed to change how you picture Prohibition, this lively history turns the spotlight on four women in the immediate aftermath of winning the vote who played influential roles on all sides of the Eighteenth and Twenty-First Amendments.

In the popular imagination, the story of Prohibition in America is a story of men and male violence, one full of federal agents fighting gangsters over the sale of moonshine. In contrast, Firebrands is the story of four Jazz Age dynamosーall women ?who were forces behind the passage, the enforcement, the defiance, and, ultimately, the repeal of the Eighteenth Amendment. They battled each other directly, and they learned to marshal clout with cowed and hypocritical legislators, almost all of them men. Their clash over Prohibition stands as the first significant exercise of women’s political power since women gained the right to vote, and their influence on the American political scene wouldn’t be equaled for decades.

In Gioia Diliberto’s fresh and timely take on this period of history, we meet Ella Boole, the stern and ambitious leader of the Woman’s Christian Temperance Union, who campaigned fiercely to introduce Prohibition and fought desperately to keep it alive. We also meet Mabel Walker Willebrandt, the most powerful woman in America at the time, who served as the top federal prosecutor charged with enforcing Prohibition. Diliberto tells the story, too, of silent film star Texas Guinan, who ran New York speakeasies backed by the mob and showed that Prohibition was not only absurd but unenforceable. And, she follows Pauline Morton Sabin, a glamorous Manhattan aristocrat who belatedly recognized the cascading evil in Prohibition and mobilized the movement to kill it.

These women led their opposing forces of “Wets” and “Drys” across a teeming landscape of bootleggers, gangsters, federal agents, temperance fanatics, and cowardly politicians, many of them secret drunks. Building on the momentum of suffrage, they forged a path for the activists who followed during the great civil rights battles of the mid-twentieth century. Yet, they have been largely lost to history. In Firebrands, Diliberto finally gives these dynamic figures their due, creating a varied and dramatic portrait of women wielding power, in politics, society, and popular culture.

The Wisdom of Father Brown【電子書籍】[ G. K. Chesterton ]

*** Original and Unabridged Content. Made available by GOLDEN CLASSIC PRESS***

Synopsis:

The Wisdom of Father Brown explores many characters and fascinating themes such as the following. An eminent criminologist is persuaded by the mild yet persistent Father Brown to sort out a family matter. Also, a Tuscan poet fancies himself as the King of Thieves. A famous French philosopher and atheist holds the key to a new invention called “Noiseless Powder.” A corpse is discovered in a dark passage backstage at London's Adelphi Theater. Finally there is Psychometric testing of criminals in Chicago.

Featuring twelve delightful stories about the short and stumpy Roman Catholic priest who finds himself thrown willy-nilly into the role of a sleuth, this book is the second in the series. Written in Chesterton's inimitable, poetic style, full of movement and color, some with an interesting twist in the tail, and all of them packed with memorable characters, the Father Brown stories have never lost their charm. The kindly but shrewd priest who sees much more than he lets on, is based on a real priest, Father John O'Connor of Bradford, who brought Chesterton into the Catholic faith. This lovable cleric, perennially dressed in a shabby habit, carrying an ancient umbrella and peering around short-sighted, has an astonishing ability to spot evil in the world and in mankind.

Father Brown first made his appearance in the short story, The Blue Cross, published in 1910. This story also featured other Father Brown staples, the arch-criminal Flambeau and Inspector Valentin, head of the Paris Police. Father Brown's methods are intuitive rather than deductive. Unlike Sherlock Holmes, Father Brown has a fundamental awareness of evil, which he attributes to the fact that as a priest, he gets to hear plenty of nefarious stories in the confession box. Also unlike the London detective, Father Brown counts humility among one of his virtues which is something that Holmes certainly doesn't do.

However, Father Brown's methods are also strictly rational. The final explanation he gives at the end of each story traces the exact route he takes to arrive at the solution. He tends, nevertheless, to use philosophic and spiritual angles to unravel the mystery rather than rely on purely scientific data. Father Brown has been extensively played on stage, radio, television and film by a host of actors. The latest television series commissioned by the BBC has gone on air in 2014.

For enthusiasts of the lovable, bumbling priest, The Wisdom of Father Brown is indeed a great addition to their collection.

The author of Brother Carnival and The World’s Smallest Bible examines small-town life in this collection of sixteen stories.

There is an inexplicable gravity in a small town. It can be read and enjoyed like a favorite book for most of its inhabitants. Comforting are its streets and institutions, its wedding and obituary announcements. Banjo Grease is about life and death in a mill town where at each epiphany and rite of passage, the narrator yields a ration of innocence. Characters portray class as a marker as strong as race and gender, and distrust that they will ever escape in their lifetimes. Faulkner uses the term “eager fatalism.” These stories’ cumulative effect asks: When exchanging naivet? for worldliness, what is lost in denying one’s past?

**“These stories float through the reader like frozen images. Each one fits into the others unevenly as jagged glass. This is the essence of great fiction at the end of the century; Ray Carver and Thom Jones plowed into some stupendous force that whips along with a tilted wild energy.” ーKate Gale, author of The Goldilocks Zone

“Dennis Must’s first collection of short stories is no ordinary debut but the mature work of a fully accomplished literary artist. Moreover, his originality, his deep irreverence, and his compassion for working-class men and women . . .
