Can the winter in his heart be thawed?

Hades has lost track of the passage of time beyond sorting the deceased into their eternal homes. With each arrival of another soul, the agony they experienced in their final moments seeps into his ichor. It is a painful, isolated existence within Hades's palace, but far safer than returning to the Underworld beyond its doors.

Hades's predictable days are interrupted by the arrival of Hermes with a stranger of a deity that Hades can barely recall. When the god introduces himself as Seph and explains that he needs a safe place where his life-entwined mother can't follow, Hades is forced to confront the loneliness that dwells deep within himーand his personal belief that he deserves little more than death as well.

**By Pain of Death is a 9,500-word low heat M/M retelling of the Hades and Persephone myth with a disabled protagonist and a trans man love interest.

This book is intended only for adult audiences. The city archivist, Augustin von Bayern, has offered to teach me the darker side of magic. Of course he’s the handsomest man in townーand his intelligence tantalizes me in ways I’ve never known.

Totem's historical timeframe begins on the morning of April 29 1792, when a special Mass was being held inside a small Gothic church near the waterfront. For God and country and a stipend, they were to set sail aboard the HMS Discovery, under the command of George Vancouver.

After navigating the Galleon infested waters around South America, Discovery was to rendezvous with the HMS Chatham, a Brigantine, and proceed north in the wakes of Captain James Cook, who had gone in search of the Nortwest Passage before his ill fated expedition to the Sandwich Islands, where he'd stared death in the face and lost.

Sailing the Inside Passage proved spectacular and when they came upon a village comprised of large cedar longhouses where totems stood akin to sentinels, they dropped anchors. To add panache, flags were raised in a regalia of colours.

For the Natives, the sight of two vessels with tall ascending masts was one to behold. Since weakness defies naught, they dressed into their ceremonial costumes as a way to impart the traits of the characters upon the wearers. For those who wore the imagery, hoped to become one.

With theatrics that imbued no fear, the Natives closed the circle around the ships, and as the crew listened to their sonorous chanting, they watched the aquiline figure of the lead canoe flap its wings with great force against the bow as they crossed each quadrant. The sound resonated like a thunderclap.

The water lapped at the ships like a cat to milk, thus facilitating the encounter. As the Harbinger, the Thunderbird was the first to come aboard and as he put a foot on each rung, he shook his feathers while opening and closing his beak. His coloured eyes opened and then shut to display a gleaming copper sheath before reopening to reveal the wearer's eyes.

The enigmatic figure proceeded to dance in a ritualistic fashion, sometimes clapping its wings on the wooden deck as if to cause thunder. Then as suddenly as he'd started he stopped. Standing with its wings tucked in, he proceeded to let out a cathartic cry as the Chief climbed aboard.

The man was enrobed with animal skins embellished with bas-reliefs on thin red cedar boards. The pictures were carved and painted, denoting a variety of figures. His headdress was that of the Raven, while the front of his ?paulettes depicted the Thunderbird and the Eagle. His shins were protected with wooden strips, while skulls that portrayed the victims of his clan hung upside down from his waist. Vancouver thought of him as a living pictograph.

Unknown to Vancouver, a dastardly deed was perpetrated by Fire Iron, the ship's friar and his cohorts prior to their leaving the region. He turned a religious excursion into a bloody crusade. The repercussion of that event unleashed the tentacles of fate to reach far into the future, because of a symbiotic event that took place presently.

The West Coast Natives are portrayed as being more than Indian villages. They were a Nation with a pantheon of Gods, art, and architecture that was larger than life.

"Totem" is set on Haida Gwaii, the Charlotte Islands, in British Columbia. Although it delves into the supernatural, it's as a function of their past. It is what guided them then, and what makes them wonder now.

Enjoy.

Sailors' Yarns & Tavern Tales: Vanishings, Ghosts and Spooky Ships【電子書籍】[ Vicki Rutherford ]

Ships found drifting with no crew aboard. Lighthouse keepers haunted by the Grey Lady, searching for her lost babe. A wooden ship trapped in Arctic ice for 13 years traveling the Northwest Passage with a frozen crew. The ghosts of drowned sailors photographed swimming alongside a ship.

These are some of the stories told in Sailors' Yarns & Tavern Tales. For most of the long history of humans at sea, thousands of primitive and not so primitive vessels must have gone missing, succumbing to the perils of the sea. We have no knowledge of those events as, for the most part, history was an oral tradition. Seafarers of those times doubtlessly talked of missing ships and other happenings at sea. And, being humans, seafarers embellished those stories as they were told and retold in port taverns.

Today, we build all manner of ships, equipped with modern navigation and communication aids. Yet, ships still run aground and are buffeted by hurricanes and other forces of nature. Yes, some have disappeared, too. Between 1984 and 2004, 200 large cargo ships, over 656 feet (200 meters) in length, were lost for various reasons, often unknown. Science is beginning to discover the natural forces behind some of these mysteries.

The mystery yarns of the sea in this book are from the past four centuries and from many sources. Some are fact, others based on fact but embroidered in the telling, and still others may only be figments of storytellers' imaginations. Whatever their authenticity, sailors' yarns are entertaining. Such tales also give those who live on land a glimpse into the world of those who follow the sea as a career. In a world of satellites and GPS, the oceans are still mysterious with secrets yet to be unraveled.

This entertaining book tells twenty strange stories of mysterious disappearances and weird happenings at sea. It also presents some of the natural causes behind such stories, which today's scientists and investigators are discovering.

Oscar-winning director David Lean was responsible for some of the most enduring images in British cinema, including the romantic clinches between Trevor Howard and Celia Johnson in Brief Encounter and Pip's memorable dash across the marshes in Great expectations. Lean became renowned for his visual epics, painting the cinematic screen in such films as The Bridge on the River Kwai, Lawrence of Arabia and Doctor Zhivago. Yet, despite the large canvas of these masterpieces, Lean never lost sight of the human story within them. In his study of Lean's career, Howard Maxford takes behind-the-scenes look at each of the director's films, chronicling their making and their subsequent reception by both audiences and critics. Lean's early work as a film editor, which led to his comission by Noel Coward to co-direct the landmark war drama In Which We Serve, is examined, along with Lean's self-imposed 14-year exile after a savage reception from critics to his penultimate film. His exile ended thriumphantly with the release of a Passage to India. Lean, the man away from the camera, is also revealed, including his six marriages and his strict Quaker upbringing. An informative critical guide, this David Lean companion offers a detailed examination of the work of one of cinema's true greats.

Lead Like a Shepherd The Secret to Leading Well【電子書籍】[ Larry Osborne ]

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】Lead Like a Shepherd The Secret to Leading Well【電子書籍】[ Larry Osborne ]

Pastor, author, and leadership consultant unpacks instruction for church leaders found in 1 Peter 5:1-4 where they are exhorted to shepherd the flock among them.

Some instruction is timeless. Regardless of the age in which we live, certain instruction carries no expiration on its relevance. Pastor, author, and leadership consultant, Larry Osborne has discovered this to be the case with instruction on how to be a good leader. The best, most practical advice comes from the Bible, and in particular, 1 Peter 5:1-4. It's in this short passage where leaders are exhorted to shepherd the flock among them.

Unfortunately, most modern leaders have precious little experience tending sheep, and many of the implications that were well understood when Peter penned these words are lost on today's reader. Osborne finds the parallels to be numerous, well-worth reviewing and understanding anew.

A shepherd leads them to water even when they fear it. A shepherd never allows one sick lamb to destroy the flock. A shepherd lays down his life for his sheep . . .

When leaders truly understand Peter's words of exhortation to lead like a shepherd, then they will begin to see the path that leads them to Leading Well.

Adrift in the Arctic Ice Pack (Illustrated)【電子書籍】[ Elisha Kent Kane ]

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】Adrift in the Arctic Ice Pack (Illustrated)【電子書籍】[ Elisha Kent Kane ]

I
T was in the summer of 1845 that Sir John Franklin undertook his fourth voyage into the Arctic regions, in search of a northwest passage, and disappeared forever in that icy waste.

Franklin’s two ships, the Erebus and the Terror, were supposed to be provisioned for three years. When this interval had passed without word of the daring navigator there was grave fear that he had met with disaster. Then began an unparalleled series of search and relief expeditions, public and private, English and American: five separate ones in 1848, three in 1849, ten in 1850, two in 1851, nine in 1852, five in 1853, two in 1854, one in 1855, and one in 1857.

Among the earliest of these was one from the United States, known as the first Grinnell expedition, which left New York in May, 1848. Lady Franklin had appealed to the President of the United States to enlist his countrymen as a “kindred people, to join heart and hand in the enterprise of snatching the lost navigators from a dreary grave.” Accordingly a bill was introduced in Congress to fit out an expedition for this purpose; but the process of legislation was too slow to provide vessels and equipment in the short time that was left for such a venture.

At this juncture a New York merchant, Henry Grinnell, outfitted two of his own vessels for the service and proffered them gratuitously to our government. They were at once accepted under a joint resolution of Congress, and the President was authorized to detail officers and men from the navy to man the ships

Tannh?user: A Story of All Time【電子書籍】[ Aleister Crowley ]

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】Tannh?user: A Story of All Time【電子書籍】[ Aleister Crowley ]

As, after long observation and careful study, the biologist sees that what at first seemed isolated and arbitrary acts are really part of a series of regular changes, and presently has the life-history of the being that he is examining clear from Alpha to Omega in his mind; as, during a battle, the relative importance of its various incidents is lost, the more so owing to the excitement and activity of the combatant, and to the fact that he is himself involved in the vicissitudes which he may have set himself to observe; while even for the commander, though the smoke-pall may lift now and again to show some brilliant charge or desperate hand-to-hand struggle, he may fail to grasp its significance in his dispositions; or indeed find it to be quite unexpected and foreign to his calculations; yet a few years or months later the same battle may be lucidly, tersely, and connectedly described, so that a child is able to follow its varying fortunes with delight and comprehension: just so has my own observation of a life-history more subtle, a battle more terrible, been at last co-ordinated: I can view the long struggle from a standpoint altogether complete, calm, and philosophical; and the result of this review is the present story of Tannh?user, just as the isolated and often apparently contradictory incidents of the fight were recorded in that jungle of chaotic emotions which I printed under the title of “The Soul of Osiris,” calling it a history so that my readers might discover for themselves (if they chose to take the trouble) the real continuity in the apparent disjointedness. The history of any man who seriously and desperately dares to force a passage into the penetralia of nature; not with the calm philosophy of the scientist, but with the burning conviction that his immortal destiny is at stake; must be a strange one: to me at least strangely attractive. The constant illusions; the many disappointments; the bitter earnestness of the man amid the grim humour, or more often sheer cacchination of his surroundings; all the bestial mockery of the baffling fiends; the still more hideous mockery in which the Powers of Good themselves seem to indulge; doubt of the reality of that which he seeks; doubt even of the seeker; the irony of the whole strife: are fascinating to me as they are, I make no doubt, to the majority of mankind. This is the subtler form of that mental bewilderment which the Greek Tragedians were so fond of depicting; as subtle in effect, yet grosser in its determining factors. For we are thus changed from the times of Sophocles and Euripides; that the fixed ideas of morality and religion which they employed as the motives of pathos or of horror are now shattered. Ibsen, otherwise in spirit and style purely Greek, and dealing as the Greeks did with the emotions of the soul, has realised the changed and infinitely more complex conditions of life; our self-appointed spiritual guides notwithstanding, or, rather, withstanding in vain. Consequently it is impossible any more to divine whether virtue or vice (as understood of old) will cause the irreparable catastrophe which is the one element of drama which we may still (in the work of a modern dramatist) await with any degree of confidence.

"High adventure, terrifying danger, close friendship, family troubles faced and resolved, and a dash of the mystical or supernatural: this novel for teens has it all." Canada Book Review Annual.

Fed by his grandfather's stories, Dave Young dreams of one day visiting the Canadian Arctic. It's a childish fascination, until the dreams become so vivid that Dave has difficulty telling them from reality. By day he is a small-town boy living in Humboldt, Saskatchewan, struggling with arguing parents and difficulties at school, but by night he is David Young, a cabin boy on HMS Erebus, one of Sir John Franklin's doomed exploration ships. When his dreams intensify, the line between Dave in Humboldt and David on the Erebus gradually disappears. As sailors fall sick, threaten mutiny and become lost in the wilderness, Dave/David and his only friend George must summon all their courage to survive the threats of starvation and exposure in a race against time and the elements. With both boys lost in a blizzard the truest test of their friendship is at hand. Will they be able to find each other in timeーand will Dave be able to find his way back to his own time?

"…the facts of the Franklin voyage are made visceral and real for a new generation of armchair historians/explorers."ーSusan PerrinーGlobe and Mail

"As both lives reel toward the dream's conclusion, the desperation is palpable. 【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】The Battle-fields of Ireland from 1688 to 1691: Including Limerick and Athlone, Aughrim and the Boyne【電子書籍】[ John Boyle ]

Few monarchs ever ascended the English throne under more unfavorable auspices than James II. Though he reached it in the order of legitimate right, it was at a time when the monarchy of England was well-nigh divested of its most vital prerogatives, and when the voice of the sovereign had little more weight in the national councils than that of any ordinarily dissentient member; and to this were superadded rivalries, jealousies, and hatreds, which having their sources in remoter times, gathered strength like the rivers, and grew deeper and darker in their course. As a representative of Scottish royalty, he inherited many a bitter memory from Bannockburn to Flodden, and as a descendant of the unfortunate Mary, he was an object of hatred to the old reform families of England, with whom her persecutor, Elizabeth, was still a hallowed memory; he was a grandson of James I., whom neither the acquisition of a kingdom, nor the confiscation of Ireland,ーso grateful to every English adventurer,ーcould redeem from national contempt; a son of Charles I., whom the revolutionary elements evoked in Church and State by the pedantry of his father, had brought to the scaffold; and brother to the second Charles, one of the most indolent and dissolute monarchs that ever disgraced a throne. Through the last three reigns, the name of Stuart had been a term of distrust or hatred, both to the High Church party of England, and the fanatics of Scotland; but through some unaccountable cause, it had one, and only one, abiding-place,ーthe heart of Catholic Ireland,ーwhose people, through every phase of that dynasty, had experienced nothing but treachery, confiscation, and proscription. Other circumstances, too, though of a domestic nature, tended to establish the unpopularity of James, and to raise up difficulties in his road to royalty. In 1671, his wife, the Duchess of York, though nominally a Protestant, died in communion with the Catholic Church, and from that time forward he himself made open profession of Catholicity. Towards the beginning of 1673 he was married to Mary of Modena, a Catholic, and the daughter of a royal house then in close alliance with France. The Parliament, which met shortly after, expressed great indignation at this event, and gave practical effect to its resentment. A declaration of indulgence which had been issued by Charles in 1671, granting to dissenters from the High Church the public observance of their religion, and to Roman Catholics the right to hear Mass in private houses, was censured, and repealed in its application to the Catholics. In this session was also passed the "Test Act," which continued in full legal force down to the reign of George IV., and which, with some modifications, is virtually observed at the present day. By the passage of this act, every Catholic official in the realm was removed, and the Duke of York lost the command of the British navy, in which he had won high distinction, and which he had brought to a greater degree of efficiency than it had hitherto known. These and similar marks of disapprobation were specially meant for James, who was then heir-presumptive, and showed him the dangers that beset his way to the throne. He, however, continued on unwavering in his principles, while every exercise of conscience on his part was met by a check on the king's prerogative, or a direct censure on himself. But when it became known, after the demise of Charles, that he, too, had received the last sacraments at the hands of a Catholic priest, and that James had been instrumental in the conversion of his reprobate brother, the rage of the High Church party knew no bounds, and their denunciations were echoed through every recusant party in the land.

Swann's Way【電子書籍】[ Marcel Proust ]

In "Swann's Way," the first volume of Marcel Proust's monumental work "In Search of Lost Time," the narrative unfolds through a vivid exploration of memory, love, and the complexities of time. Proust's literary style is notable for its intricate, flowing sentences and deep psychological insight, employing a stream-of-consciousness technique that immerses readers in the protagonist's introspective journey. Set against the backdrop of late 19th and early 20th-century France, the novel intricately weaves together themes of desire, social status, and the ephemeral nature of art and beauty, exemplified through the character Charles Swann's obsession with Odette de Crecy. Marcel Proust, a French novelist and essayist, was influenced by his own experiences of love, loss, and the passage of time, as well as the social dynamics of Parisian society. His aristocratic background, combined with his acute sensitivity and detail-oriented perception, allowed him to capture the nuances of human emotion and perception. Proust's own struggles with illness and the search for meaning in everyday existence further shaped his literary vision, transforming personal reflections into universal themes that resonate deeply. "Swann's Way" is a seminal work that beckons readers to engage deeply with its rich prose and profound themes. It is highly recommended for anyone seeking a transformative literary experience that not only captivates the intellect but also touches the heart, inviting thoughtful contemplation on the nature of memory and the intricacies of love.

Raphael earns his living as a butcher in a hillside village in rural Trinidad. He is also a would-be author, but there have been so many distractions to the novel he has been writing for forty-one years that many of the characters have lost patience and gone off to do their own thing. But somehow, miraculously, the novel, as Raphael has planned it in one hundred chapters of a thousand words, seems to write itself...
Time in this richly ambitious and multi-levelled novel is both circular and simultaneous, but moving, as Raphael ages, towards a sense of dissolution both of persons and of the culture of the village. But if there is a tragic realism about the passage of time, there is also a constant aliveness in the novel's love affair with the language of Creole Trinidad with its poetic inventiveness and wit, with the improvisatory sounds of jazz and the undimmed urge of the villagers to create meaning in their lives. Above all, there is Raphael's belief that in the making of his fiction, however messy and disobedient its materials, art can both challenge the destructive passage of time and make us see reality afresh.

This is a history of an expedition to the Arctic in search of a lost team that was written by one of the crewmen on the subsequent searches. From the intro:

“IT was in the summer of 1845 that Sir John Franklin undertook his fourth voyage into the Arctic regions, in search of a northwest passage, and disappeared forever in that icy waste.

Lady Franklin had appealed to the President of the United States to ≪ 8 ≫enlist his countrymen as a “kindred people, to join heart and hand in the enterprise of snatching the lost navigators from a dreary grave.” Accordingly a bill was introduced in Congress to fit out an expedition for this purpose; but the process of legislation was too slow to provide vessels and equipment in the short time that was left for such a venture.”
