【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】The Liberation of Italy, 1815-1870【電子書籍】[ Contess Evelyn Lilian Hazeldine Carrington Martinengo-Cesaresco ]

The unity of Italy, which the statesmen of Europe and all save a small number of the Italians themselves still regarded as an utopia when it was on the verge of accomplishment, was, nevertheless, desired and foreseen by the two greatest intellects produced by the Italian race. Dante conceived an Italy united under the Empire, which returning from a shameful because self-imposed exile would assume its natural seat in Rome. To him it was a point of secondary interest that the Imperial Lord happened to be bred beyond the Alps, that he was of Teutonic, not of Latin blood. If the Emperor brought the talisman of his authority to the banks of the Tiber, Italy would overcome the factions which rent her, and would not only rule herself, but lead mankind. Vast as the vision was, Dante cannot be called presumptuous for having entertained it. The Rome of the C?sars, the Rome of the Popes, had each transformed the world: Italy was transforming it for a third time at that moment by the spiritual awakening which, beginning with the Renaissance, led by inevitable steps to the Reformation. The great Florentine poet had the right to dream that his country was invested with a providential mission, that his people was a chosen people, which, by its own fault and by the fault of others, had lost its way, but would find it again. Such was Dante's so-called Ghibelline programmeーless Ghibelline than intensely and magnificently Italian. His was a mind too mighty to be caged within the limits of partisan ambitions. The same may be said of Machiavelli. He also imagined, or rather discerned in the future, a regenerate Italy under a single head, and this, not the advancement of any particular man, was the grand event he endeavoured to hasten. With the impatience of a heart consumed by the single passion of patriotism, he conjured his fellow-countrymen to seize the first chance that presented itself, promising or unpromising, of reaching the goal. The concluding passage in the Principe was meant as an exhortation; it reads as a prophecy. 'We ought not therefore,' writes Machiavelli, 'to let this occasion pass whereby, after so long waiting, Italy may behold the coming of a saviour. Nor can I express with what love he would be received in all those provinces which have suffered from the foreign inundations; with what thirst of vengeance, with what obstinate faith, with what worship, with what tears! What doors would be closed against him? What people would deny him obedience? What jealousy would oppose him? What Italian would not do him honour? The barbarous dominion of the stranger stinks in the nostrils of all.' Another man of genius, an Italian whom a fortuitous circumstance made the citizen and the master of a country not his own, grasped both the vital necessity of unity from an Italian point of view, and the certainty of its ultimate achievement. Napoleon's notes on the subject, written at St Helena, sum up the whole question without rhetoric but with unanswerable logic: 'Italy is surrounded by the Alps and the sea. Her natural limits are defined with as much exactitude as if she were an island. Italy is only united to the Continent by 150 leagues of frontier, and these 150 leagues are fortified by the highest barrier that can be opposed to man. Italy, isolated between her natural limits, is destined to form a great and powerful nation. Italy is one nation; unity of customs, language and literature must, within a period more or less distant, unite her inhabitants under one sole government. And Rome will, without the slightest doubt, be chosen by the Italians as their capital.'
画面が切り替わりますので、しばらくお待ち下さい。 ※ご購入は、楽天kobo商品ページからお願いします。※切り替わらない場合は、こちら をクリックして下さい。 ※このページからは注文できません。

Follow Anje on her journey from the diagnosis of breast cancer to health. Find courage in every line and humor in every chapter when she relates her confusion and her victories. It is a journey, not a war; Anje refuses to say she is fighting her cancer, instead she sees it as something that came on to her path and is part of herself to have and to let go. Mindfully, she takes time, together with her husband Rob, to choose all treatments carefully, even if, sometimes, that means changing her mind several times.
Whatever your connection to cancer whether you or a loved one either has or had cancer; whether you have lost family or friends or are yourself now living with cancerJourney will give you laughter, sober truths, and warm encounters. It might even change the way you see cancer in the most human of ways.
Anje shows us her way to find direction from the human spirit as she struggled with making choices from conflicting opinions about the best way to survive the cancer that threatened her. She found peace of mind and likely her sanity from the wee small voice within that demanded to be heard above the roar of professional advice. No doubt this will influence others and give them courage to weigh their medical options carefully with the full knowledge of their own life-affirming guidance.Bill MacKay, Author
These writings are windows into a life lived fully, with curiosity and courage. With language that is at once vivid, spare, and evocative, Anje draws the reader into her unique experiences and her unique passage through these experiences.
Paranormal romance. Reissue!

Past Loves, Past Lives, PAST INDISCRETION!
Haunted by recurring nightmares of doom, Savannah Alexander learns that the future and past are irrevocably linked. Will she be able to save herself and the man she has grown to love from the horrors that await her back in time... on the lost continent of Atlantis?

In matters of love, Tom Patterson has been hurt before. But when overwhelming coincidences bring Savannah back into his life, can he put aside his prejudices and act upon faith to protect the woman he loves?

5 STARS! COMPELLING READ! This book was my introduction to the works of Ms. Knight. What a compelling story - weaving a romance in and out of time travel/past lives - I could barely put the book down. If you are a fan of ancient Egypt and love stories, this book is a must-read!--Visionary Insight Press

Susanne Knight has outdone herself again. She builds a wonderful story of intrigue that thrusts you back in time to a place long forgotten... Atlantis! Her characters are so loveable; you find that you never want the story to end. I can't wait to see what she comes up with next. Excellent!--Paula Beaty Reviews.

4 stars! A sexy, fast-paced supernatural ride! Take this fast-paced supernatural ride back to the time of Atlantis and the creation of the Greek pantheon of gods. See how Ms. Knight deftly melds modern day and old world science with steamy romantic interludes with action scenes grafted seamlessly into the mix. PAST INDISCRETIONS is sure to jumpstart your imagination and worm its way into your great reads category.--Sime-Gen Reviews

4 Roses! How closely does the passage of time intertwine with the lives of humans? Can events from the past be relived or corrected in the present? These are interesting questions posed in Susanne Marie Knight's new novel PAST INDISCRETIONS. This is a fascinating tale that manages to suspend any disbelief you may have about past lives, reincarnation, and the ability of good to triumph over evil. As she did in her story JANUS IS A TWO-HEADED GOD, Ms. Knight once again draws the reader in to the adventure, and encourages us to become part of Savannah's often nightmarish experiences. This story is a delightful change from many of the paranormal romances out there. It never loses touch with the everyday existence of both Tom and Savannah, but still allows a natural drift into the "other" world which has such an impact on both their lives. I recommend it to anyone who would like to believe in their dreams.--A Romance Review

4 Stars! Ms. Knight has written a gripping paranormal suspense. The characters are well developed and engrossing. PAST INDISCRETIONS creatively brings together concepts of past lives and cloning with the fascinating mythology of the destruction of Atlantis. The mystery and unique plot makes this a fantastic page-turner that I was not able to put down.--The Romance Studio

As usual, Susanne Marie Knight has created a highly unusual tale with a very unique storyline. PAST INDISCRETIONS takes readers on an adventure through time, to a place that is cloaked in myth and hidden in the fog of legend. A place that scholars of the modern world still debate--Atlantis. Ms. Knight's abundant imagination has gifted this novel with plenty of twists and turns, mythical marvels and intriguing characters. This romance crosses the genre lines with a daring blend of the classic elements of romance, fantastical adventures of the paranormal variety and elusive elements of suspense. Readers who appreciate an enigmatic, quixotic read will enjoy unraveling the mysterious of PAST INDISCRETIONS.--The Road To Romance
画面が切り替わりますので、しばらくお待ち下さい。 ※ご購入は、楽天kobo商品ページからお願いします。※切り替わらない場合は、こちら をクリックして下さい。 ※このページからは注文できません。

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】The Law of Civilization and Decay: An Essay on History【電子書籍】[ Peter Chardon Brooks Adams ]

When the Romans first emerged from the mist of fable, they were already a race of land-owners who held their property in severalty, and, as the right of alienation was established, the formation of relatively large estates had begun. The ordinary family, however, held, perhaps, twelve acres, and, as the land was arable, and the staple grain, it supported a dense rural population. The husbandmen who tilled this land were of the martial type, and, probably for that reason, though supremely gifted as administrators and soldiers, were ill-fitted to endure the strain of the unrestricted economic competition of a centralized society. Consequently their conquests had hardly consolidated before decay set in, a decay whose causes may be traced back until they are lost in the dawn of history. The Latins had little economic versatility; they lacked the instinct of the Greeks for commerce, or of the Syrians and Hindoos for manufactures. They were essentially land-owners, and, when endowed with the acquisitive faculty, usurers. The latter early developed into a distinct species, at once more subtle of intellect and more tenacious of life than the farmers, and on the disparity between these two types of men, the fate of all subsequent civilization has hinged. At a remote antiquity Roman society divided into creditors and debtors; as it consolidated, the power of the former increased, thus intensifying the pressure on the weak, until, when centralization culminated under the C?sars, reproduction slackened, disintegration set in, and, after some centuries of decline, the Middle Ages began. The history of the monarchy must probably always remain a matter of conjecture, but it seems reasonably certain that the expulsion of the Tarquins was the victory of an hereditary monied caste, which succeeded in concentrating the functions of government in a practically self-perpetuating body drawn from their own order.[1] Niebuhr has demonstrated, in one of his most striking chapters, that usury was originally a patrician privilege; and some of the fiercest struggles of the early republic seem to have been decided against the oligarchy by wealthy plebeians, who were determined to break down the monopoly in money-lending. At all events, the conditions of life evidently favoured the growth of the instinct which causes its possessor to suck the vitality of the economically weak; and Macaulay, in the preface to Virginia, has given so vivid a picture of the dominant class, that one passage at least should be read entire.
画面が切り替わりますので、しばらくお待ち下さい。 ※ご購入は、楽天kobo商品ページからお願いします。※切り替わらない場合は、こちら をクリックして下さい。 ※このページからは注文できません。

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】IN SEARCH OF LOST TIME - Complete 7 Book Collection (Modern Classics Series)【電子書籍】[ Marcel Proust ]

Marcel Proust's monumental work, 'In Search of Lost Time,' explores the intricacies of memory, time, and human experience across its seven-volume collection. Written in a distinctive, introspective style characterized by lengthy and intricately structured sentences, Proust immerses readers in the narrative tapestry of his characters' lives. The work encapsulates the essence of the modernist literary movement, delving into themes of self-reflection, social dynamics, and the often elusive nature of happiness, all set against the backdrop of early 20th-century French society. Each volume intricately layers Proust's rich prose with philosophical inquiries, creating a profound exploration of consciousness and the passage of time. Marcel Proust (1871-1922), a French author and critic, was deeply influenced by his own experiences with love, loss, and the social stratifications of his time. Proust's bourgeois upbringing, coupled with his keen observation of the Parisian elite, informs the depth and authenticity of the novel's characters and settings. His multifaceted exploration of these themes reflects his own struggles with illness and the fleeting nature of personal reflections, prompting his desire to encapsulate fleeting moments and memories through literature. 'In Search of Lost Time' is a literary odyssey that transcends mere storytelling; it invites readers into the depths of human consciousness. Ideal for those who appreciate profound literary exploration or wish to gain insight into the complexities of memory and identity, this complete collection stands as one of the most significant achievements in literary history.
画面が切り替わりますので、しばらくお待ち下さい。 ※ご購入は、楽天kobo商品ページからお願いします。※切り替わらない場合は、こちら をクリックして下さい。 ※このページからは注文できません。

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】Little Daffydowndilly (From: "The Snow Image and Other Twice-Told Tales")【電子書籍】[ Nathaniel Hawthorne ]

In "Little Daffydowndilly," a gem from Nathaniel Hawthorne's "The Snow Image and Other Twice-Told Tales," the author weaves a poignant narrative that explores the themes of innocence, sacrifice, and the harsh realities of life through the lens of childhood. Written in Hawthorne's characteristic styleーmarked by rich symbolism and a deep moral undertoneーthis tale deftly blends fantasy with an underlying critique of societal norms. Hawthorne's use of lyrical prose and vivid imagery encapsulates the fragile beauty of youth juxtaposed with the inevitable passage of time, making it a striking illustration of his preoccupation with the moral complexities of human experience in early 19th-century America. Nathaniel Hawthorne, a master of American romanticism, was profoundly influenced by the Puritan backdrop of his youth, often examining the interplay of sin and morality in his works. "Little Daffydowndilly," like many of his tales, reflects his fascination with the concept of innocence lost and the bittersweet nature of existence. Hawthorne's own experiences in a rapidly changing society, along with his keen observations on the human condition, shaped his ability to portray childhood's poignant fragility. Recommended for readers seeking a nuanced exploration of childhood, "Little Daffydowndilly" is an essential read that resonates with anyone reflecting on the bittersweet nature of innocence amid life's inevitable transitions. Hawthorne's delicate touch and profound insights invite readers to ponder the depths of their own experiences with loss and beauty.
画面が切り替わりますので、しばらくお待ち下さい。 ※ご購入は、楽天kobo商品ページからお願いします。※切り替わらない場合は、こちら をクリックして下さい。 ※このページからは注文できません。

She and her crew have traded the complexities of the Earth/Mars wars for the open hostility of a species that will shoot them on sight.

Their anti-piracy mission has evolved. 【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】Heartbreak to Hope: Overcoming the Anguish of Grief【電子書籍】[ Sam Wright ]

Have you suffered the death of someone you love? Do you know someone struggling with grief? It’s one of the most difficult things we humans experience. As a pastor Rev. Dr. Samuel Wright had walked with hundreds of people who had lost loved ones. Then his son died. He had to endure the abuse of grief in a different, deeper and more personal way. In Heartbreak to Hope: Overcoming the Anguish of Grief he merges his pastoral wisdom with his own despair as he walks with the reader toward hope. In his vulnerability and honesty he does not sugarcoat the pain of grief. Yet he offers help to those struggling with grief in a way that is real.

The aim of this book is to enable you to:
?Grant yourself permission to grieve
?Learn practical ways to cope with grief
?Receive honest encouragement and insight
?Grow in the grace and love of God in spite of your pain
?Connect with the witnesses of the Bible who also suffered losses

If you have lost a child, a spouse, a relative or friend, this book will help you cope with your grief and move you toward hope and peace. We are not taught how to grieve. Grief is something we have to learn through tragedy and loss. However, there are things that we can learn from one another, especially from those who have walked through the valley of the shadow of death. God may seem a million miles away or non-existent to the person enduring grief. What Dr. Wright shares is that God’s grace is what gets us through each moment with the help of friends and family, God’s own presence and the stories of others.

Not only is this book helpful for those who are wrestling with mourning, but it is a valuable guide to those who care for others in their loss. By witnessing the depths of despair of this pastor and his movement toward hope, caregivers will grow in their compassion toward those who mourn. Jesus taught that we should weep with those who weep. Heartbreak to Hope enables caregivers to empathize with those grieving the death of a loved one.

Each chapter contains a passage from the Bible, which connects to grieving, the author’s personal testimony to the devastation of grief, words of encouragement, suggestions for moving forward, and a prayer.

Because of its inspirational wisdom Heartbreak to Hope makes a meaningful and comforting gift to those who are in the midst of despair over a lost loved one as well as for those who care for them.
画面が切り替わりますので、しばらくお待ち下さい。 ※ご購入は、楽天kobo商品ページからお願いします。※切り替わらない場合は、こちら をクリックして下さい。 ※このページからは注文できません。

In the winter of 1944, American troops found themselves stranded in the remote hills of Papua New

Guinea. 【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】A New Century of Inventions: Being Designs & Descriptions of One Hundred Machines, Relating to Arts, Manufactures, & Domestic Life【電子書籍】[ James White ]

It has been my lot, during a long and eventful passage through life, to have my attention forcibly drawn to a multitude of Mechanical Subjects; the present review of which permits me to hope, that in making them publicly known, I should render an important service to the Arts and to Society. But the manner of doing this has been so long a question with me, that I have sometimes feared my ability would be extinct before I could do it at all. The reasons, however, that urge me to make the attempt acquire strength with the lapse of time: and whenever my declining health bespeaks the approach of that “night in which no man can work,” I feel deep regret, that this tribute should not have been thrown into the treasury of human knowledge while yet, by the favour of a good Providence, the means of doing it were more fully at my disposal. I have determined therefore to publish these Inventions. Not because they have been matured into a regular System of Mechanical truth; but because they consist of many distinct objects of immediate application:ーcoupled with some ideas of a more comprehensive nature, that may probably extend the usefulness of this admirable study, in the hands of Artists yet unborn. The form, or rather the title of this work, has but one example, that of the illustrious Marquis of Worcester; whose name may, perhaps, prolong the remembrance of mine: an event the rightful anticipation of which, I confess, would give me pleasure. Not that I either covet or regard what is commonly called popular applause: but the approbation of the wise and good I do regard, and aspire to obtain; since that alone seems to fulfil the adageー“Vox populi vox dei.” On the subject of our respective Inventions, my views are somewhat different from those of the Noble Marquis; whose description of his labours, as the custom then was, seems chiefly calculated to excite the desire of knowing them better: whereas my wish is to infuse, at once, the knowledge of my subjects into every head capable of receiving it. This Work then, treats less of Theory than Practice. What are called Principles in Mechanics, are, and must be, founded on numerous suppositions; to present which to “the mind’s eye” requires often a forest of signs, which some readers will not, and others can not penetrate; so that, for many, Theory might as well not exist. This evil is increased when, as it sometimes happens, these suppositions are laid so far from reality, as to leave the result, though correctly deduced, further from the truth than the point to which a sound understanding unassisted by science, would have carried it. To this extreme discrepance of views between theoretical and practical men, may be ascribed their well-known antipathy to each otherーin indulging which, they are alike to blame! since no theory inconsistent with fact can be complete; nor any fact be adduced, that a perfect theory will not account for and confirm. Happily these discussions do not affect my present purpose. For although I shall offer nothing contrary to sound theory, I do not consider that as my subject; but make it my business to present rational methods of producing useful effects.ーIn other words to describe these Inventions as connected with immediate Practice. And if, hereafter, it should become desirable to resume the discussion of any principle relating to these subjects, I shall cheerfully enter upon it; but hasten, mean while, to do what seems more importantーto place the subjects themselves beyond the danger of being wholly lost, whatever may befall me in the course of those events which are still among the secrets of Heaven.

Willa Cather's "A Lost Lady" masterfully encapsulates the transition from the frontier spirit of the American West to the encroaching modernity of the early 20th century. Set in the fictional town of Sweet Water, Nebraska, the novella paints a poignant portrait of Marian Forrester, a once-vibrant woman whose identity becomes entwined with the fate of her husband, the idealistic pioneer Niels. Cather's lyrical prose marries realism with deep psychological insight, revealing the complexities of love, loss, and the inexorable passage of time. The narrative unfolds with rich imagery and meticulous attention to the landscape, reflecting both the beauty and melancholy of a disappearing way of life. Willa Cather, an acclaimed voice of American literature, was born in Virginia before moving to Nebraska, where she drew inspiration from her surroundings. Her experiences as a pioneer'??s daughter and her keen observations of rural life deeply influenced her writing. Cather was dedicated to elevating the stories of the American West, imbuing them with a strong sense of place and character that resonates throughout her works, particularly in "A Lost Lady." This novella serves as an essential exploration of gender and the social changes of the period, making it a compelling read for those interested in early 20th-century American literature. Readers will find in Cather's nuanced depiction of Marian Forrester not only a reflection of individual loss but also a broader commentary on the evolving American identity.
画面が切り替わりますので、しばらくお待ち下さい。 ※ご購入は、楽天kobo商品ページからお願いします。※切り替わらない場合は、こちら をクリックして下さい。 ※このページからは注文できません。

Marshland Trinity (Win or Lose, Ink, 1997) contains the two short novels Marsh Passage(Tranasse) and The Lost Ones (Les Perdues) originally published as the award-winning Marshand Brace by LSU Press in 1982 plus the short novel In a Kingdom of the Moon (Dans Rayuame de la Lune).

Taken together, they encapsulate the Acadian (Cajun) experience of the tumultuous 1950s.

In the first story, an aged trapper engages in a solo pursuit of a murderer through the vast marshes where he has lived and worked for a portion of every year since he was born. It is a journey of endurance, reflection, danger and -- even in his advanced years -- personal growth arriving at a dramatic realization of the true natural relationship between life and death.

In the second story a boy reaches manhood in a dramatic discovery of the intrinsic values of family, culture, cherished customs yet the inevitability of change. His struggles include contradictory messages in a Catholic school before Vatican II, a society increasingly dominated by post-World War II developments and the suppression of his native language. The tale culminates in a dramatic confrontation of his father and an uncle over a dark family secret during a an attempted roundup of wild cattle on a remote island.

The last story is told from the point of view of a young Cajun boy estranged from his native bayou country with his family on the grounds of a state mental asylum. Through extraodinary circumstances, he and his family are thrust to center stage in a drama involving fraud, McCarthyism and fallout from the Korean War.
画面が切り替わりますので、しばらくお待ち下さい。 ※ご購入は、楽天kobo商品ページからお願いします。※切り替わらない場合は、こちら をクリックして下さい。 ※このページからは注文できません。

It is natural to suppose that the arrival of the new Rector was a rather exciting event for Carlingford. It is a considerable town, it is true, nowadays, but then there are no alien activities to disturb the placeーno manufactures, and not much trade. And there is a very respectable amount of very good society at Carlingford. To begin with, it is a pretty placeーmild, sheltered, not far from town; and naturally its very reputation for good society increases the amount of that much-prized article. The advantages of the town in this respect have already put five per cent upon the house-rents; but this, of course, only refers to the real town, where you can go through an entire street of high garden-walls, with houses inside full of the retired exclusive comforts, the dainty economical refinement peculiar to such places; and where the good people consider their own society as a warrant of gentility less splendid, but not less assured, than the favour of Majesty itself. Naturally there are no Dissenters in Carlingfordーthat is to say, none above the rank of a greengrocer or milkman; and in bosoms devoted to the Church it may be well imagined that the advent of the new Rector was an event full of importance, and even of excitement. He was highly spoken of, everybody knew; but nobody knew who had spoken highly of him, nor had been able to find out, even by inference, what were his views. The Church had been Low during the last Rector's reignーprofoundly Lowーlost in the deepest abysses of Evangelicalism. A determined inclination to preach to everybody had seized upon that good man's brain; he had half emptied Salem Chapel, there could be no doubt; but, on the other hand, he had more than half filled the Chapel of St Roque, half a mile out of Carlingford, where the perpetual curate, young, handsome, and fervid, was on the very topmost pinnacle of Anglicanism. St Roque's was not more than a pleasant walk from the best quarter of Carlingford, on the north side of the town, thank heaven! which one could get at without the dread passage of that new horrid suburb, to which young Mr Rider, the young doctor, was devoting himself. But the Evangelical rector was dead, and his reign was over, and nobody could predict what the character of the new administration was to be. The obscurity in which the new Rector had buried his views was the most extraordinary thing about him. He had taken high honours at college, and was "highly spoken of;" but whether he was High, or Low, or Broad, muscular or sentimental, sermonising or decorative, nobody in the world seemed able to tell. "Fancy if he were just to be a Mr Bury over again! Fancy him going to the canal, and having sermons to the bargemen, and attending to all sorts of people except to us, whom it is his duty to attend to!" cried one of this much-canvassed clergyman's curious parishioners. "Indeed I do believe he must be one of these people. If he were in society at all, somebody would be sure to know." "Lucy dear, Mr Bury christened you," said another not less curious but more tolerant inquirer
画面が切り替わりますので、しばらくお待ち下さい。 ※ご購入は、楽天kobo商品ページからお願いします。※切り替わらない場合は、こちら をクリックして下さい。 ※このページからは注文できません。

When our ship had nearly reached the mouth of the Mersey, on her outward voyage, the boatswain and his men were busily engaged in lashing everything moveable in its place on deck. “We shall get it to-night,” said that man of the sea; but on the vessel went as smoothly as ever, and everybody was merry at dinner-time, hours after the “Bosun’s” prophecy. We watched the setting sun, and a gorgeous after-glow of purple, grey, and gold. Then came the twilight, and a sense of chilliness. The land on the port-side was lost in a soft grey mist; then it became colder and darker, and we went below. The saloon looked bright and cheerful, with its sparkle of glasses in the swinging racks, and the mellow light of the lamps. I read for an hour or more, and then “turned in,” heartily glad to think we were having such a smooth and pleasant time, and that the “Bosun’s” prediction had not been verified. I was soon asleep. How long I slept I do not quite remember, but I dreamed that I was falling down a well, and the crash made when I reached the bottom awoke me. I forgot for the moment where I was, but my first impressions were that, Zazel-like, I had been shot out of a cannon, and that I was whirling round chain-shot fashion. Instinctively stretching out my hands, I found myself in my berth, but the ship was plunging and rolling very much, and everything moveable was knocking about in all directions. Another crash, similar to the one which awoke me, told of loose crockery going to destruction in the steward’s pantry. I spent some time in trying to decide whether the ship was playing at leapfrog, or trying to turn a somersault. A “sea change” put an end to my deliberations. Sleep was impossible, and I was glad when morning came, and I held on to the berth with one hand, and dressed with the other. That man of the sea was right. We had “got” it, and no mistake; and we continued to “get it” until off Cape St. Vincent, when we regained smooth water. Cape St. Vincent is a rocky bluff, crested with a ruined convent and a lighthouse, the white walls of which gleam out brightly in the sunshine, although we are fully ten miles away. After we have passed it, and look back, it forms a much more picturesque object than when seen directly opposite; and in front of the nearly perpendicular cliffs is a curious cone-shaped rock, and through the narrow passage between this and the mainland, tradition says an American skipper ran his vessel for a wager, and got through safely. The whole coast here is bold and rocky, but not dangerous. Large craft may ride close in under the cliffs.

Identical twin brothers Thomas and Joshua are hell-bent to determine whether a Hopi prophecy about four sacred stones is true or not. It is prophesized that a sacred stone was hidden in the Far East and if reunited with the sacred stone in North America it will mark the arrival of the Second Messiah. It takes the brothers far away to Burma where Thomas discovers clues left behind by an early Protestant missionary from Pennsylvania.
After finding Louis Riels' personal journals through Riel's grandson, the twins use their knowledge of Native American religious beliefs to begin an odyssey on the train past Mandalay and the officer's club where George Orwell drank his oily gin beside the Allywaddy River in the 1920s, to the far reaches in north in Burma. A prophecy thousands of years old is protected by guardians of the sacred stone, but resourcefulness and timing lay with the M?tis twins from Canada.
Factually accurate and well-researched, Prophecy Seekers takes the reader deep into old Native beliefs and connections to the Ten Lost Tribes of Israel, reaching as far as northern Burma and the Kachin tribe, said to be the source of the migration to the Americas centuries before. The Hopi Indians, holders of the ancient prophecies, were the focus of Remy McFlynn for many years when he studied under a medicine man in Canada. His knowledge and passion for Native culture shine through in the book and rubbed off on Trapp, who wrote the book while living in Hong Kong.
Based on an extraordinary journey to northern Burma, some scenes are so vivid that it transports the reader to different vistas, from George Orwell's officer's club to the encounter with the Colonel on the train and even the meeting with Louis Riel's grandson, novel has captured something special. But the most memorable aspect of the book is the ending, when the phoenix burns into ash. Seldom has a passage of such objectivity and clarity been recorded during a brush with death.
画面が切り替わりますので、しばらくお待ち下さい。 ※ご購入は、楽天kobo商品ページからお願いします。※切り替わらない場合は、こちら をクリックして下さい。 ※このページからは注文できません。

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】Cities of the Plain A Poetic Exploration of Love, Desire, and Memory in 20th Century France【電子書籍】[ Marcel Proust ]

In "Cities of the Plain," the concluding volume of Marcel Proust's monumental work "In Search of Lost Time," the author intricately weaves a tapestry of memory, desire, and time. Employing his hallmark style of long, flowing sentences and profound psychological insights, Proust delves into the complexities of human relationships, particularly the tension between art and life, as well as the ephemeral nature of beauty and love. Set against the backdrop of early 20th-century France, this narrative explores the interactions and misunderstandings among an ensemble of characters, ultimately encapsulating themes of longing, loss, and the eternal quest for understanding oneself amidst societal constraints. The book's literary context is steeped in a post-impressionistic nuance, seamlessly blending the personal and the universal, which reinforces its poignant reflections on existence. Marcel Proust (1871-1922), a French novelist, essayist, and critic, is renowned for his exploratory and introspective writing style. His own experiences with love, loss, and creative endeavors profoundly influenced his works. Proust was known to have drawn from his rich Parisian upbringing and his contemplative nature, which shaped his unique perspective on the passage of time and the depth of human emotions. "Cities of the Plain" is a profound and thought-provoking read for those seeking to explore the intricacies of memory and identity. Ideal for both seasoned Proust enthusiasts and new readers, it invites contemplation and reflection on life's ephemeral moments, offering an inimitable glimpse into the labyrinth of the human soul and the societal constructs that envelop it.

For nearly two thousand years the existence of a great Southland, in the ocean of the southern hemisphere, corresponding to the land mass of the Old World in the northern, was a matter of doubt and dispute among geographers. In the sixteenth century, this land begins to appear vaguely on globes and charts; possibly the information was due to the Malays and Arabs, who were skilful sailors and made long voyages in the Pacific and Indian Oceans. It has been thought that the Portuguese, approaching the Malay region from the west, while the Spaniards came from the east, may have been acquainted with the northern coast of the new continent; since they certainly had some knowledge of the northern coast of New Guinea early in the sixteenth century. But our first definite information may be said to date from the beginning of the seventeenth century, when a Spanish exploring expedition, under de Quiros and de Torres, sailed across the Pacific and discovered the New Hebrides group. One of the islands they named la Australia del Espiritu Santo, under the idea that it formed part of the great southern mainland. De Quiros then sailed back to Mexico, but Torres continued his voyage northwestward through the straits which still bear his name, and so to the Spanish Possessions in the Philippines. But the day of Spain as a sea power was passing away, and it was to the Dutch traders that the western world owed its first real acquaintance with Australia. The early discoveries were often accidental and did not lead to settlement or regular intercourse with the natives. This was due partly to the backward state of the science of navigation, partly to the fact that the voyagers on long expeditions usually lost from half to three-quarters of their crews from disease. The Dutch had the advantage of a local base, as they were already firmly established in the East Indian Islands; so that Australia was really discovered from the Indies. Trade, not exploration, was the main motive of the Dutch. So, in the early part of the seventeenth century, trading ships were dispatched from Batavia by the Dutch East-India Company to explore the north and west coasts of Australia. We find all along these coasts the names of the ships still surviving, as in Arnhem Land and Cape Leuwin; those of the captains, as in Dirk Hartog Island, Houtmans Abrolhos, Edels Land and Nuyts Land; while the Gulf of Carpentaria is a memorial to Peter Carpenter, the then Governor of the great trading company. The most important voyage of all was that of Abel 1 Tasman, in 1642. He started from Mauritius, to discover a passage south of the Australian continent; and after landing in Van Diemen’s Land, now Tasmania, he sailed across the Tasman Sea and up the west coast of New Zealand, and so back to Batavia by way of Tonga and the Fiji islands and the north coast of New Guinea. He left behind him another name, New Holland, for the whole continent. These names throughout Australasia bear witness to the skill and energy of the Dutch navigators; but they came only as traders, and the west coast of Australia, which they knew best, had little to attract them to permanent settlement. Sand and grass, hostile natives, and dangerous reefs marked by a series of shipwrecks sum up their impression of the new land. Here are 2,3 two views of the coast; it does not seem attractive for sailors. We can quite understand why they made no effort to open up a trade like that of the East Indies, especially as they missed the east coast, the most promising region for European settlement.
画面が切り替わりますので、しばらくお待ち下さい。 ※ご購入は、楽天kobo商品ページからお願いします。※切り替わらない場合は、こちら をクリックして下さい。 ※このページからは注文できません。

Of all the gems which have served to adorn a crown or deck a beauty the Regent has perhaps had the most remarkable career. Bought, sold, stolen and lost, it has passed through many hands, always however leaving some mark of its passage, so that the historian can follow its devious course with some certainty. From its extraordinary size it has been impossible to confound it with any other diamond in the world; hence the absence of those conflicting statements with regard to it which puzzle one at every turn in the cases of certain other historical jewels. The first authentic appearance of this diamond in history was in December, 1701. In that month it was offered for sale by a diamond merchant named Jamchund to the Governor of Fort St. George near Madras, Mr. Thomas Pitt, the grandfather of the great Earl of Chatham. Although, as we shall see later on, the diamond came fairly into the hands of Mr. Pitt, it had already a taint of blood upon it. I allude to the nebulous and gloomy story that has drifted down to us along with this sparkling gem. How far the story is true it is now impossible to ascertain. The Regent itself alone could throw any light upon the subject, and that, notwithstanding its myriad rays, it refuses to do. Tradition says the stone was found by a slave at Partreal, a hundred and fifty miles south of Golconda. The native princes who worked these diamond mines were very particular to see that all the large gems should be reserved to deck their own swarthy persons; hence there were most stringent regulations for the detection of theft. No person who was not above suspicionーand who indeed was ever above the suspicion of an absolute Asiatic prince?ーmight leave the mines without being thoroughly examined, inside and out, by means of purgatives, emetics and the like. Notwithstanding all these precautions however, the Regent was concealed in a wound made in the calf of the leg of a slave. The inspectors, I suppose, did not probe the wound deeply enough, for the slave got away safely with his prize and reached Madras. Alas! poor wretch, it was an evil day for him when he found the great rough diamond. On seeking out a purchaser he met with an English skipper who offered him a considerable sum for it; but on going to the ship, perhaps to get his money, he was slain and thrown overboard. The skipper then sold the stone to Jamchund for one thousand pounds (5000), took to drink and speedily succumbing to the combined effects of an evil conscience and delirium tremens hanged himself. Thus twice baptized in blood the great diamond was fairly launched upon its life of adventure
画面が切り替わりますので、しばらくお待ち下さい。 ※ご購入は、楽天kobo商品ページからお願いします。※切り替わらない場合は、こちら をクリックして下さい。 ※このページからは注文できません。

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】When Paris Was Her Lover【電子書籍】[ Heidi Harrison ]

When Paris Was Her Lover juxtaposes the lives of two women from two continents. In the Prologue we meet Marlene. It is the year 2000. She is ensconced under the Eiffel Tower, reminiscent and dreamy as she recalls that once upon a time, Paris was her lover. We then move backward to the year 1985. We are in San Francisco, where she lives and works as a preschool teacher. She is lost and friendless. On a whim, she decides to go to Paris. Once she gets there, she becomes enamored not only of the city but also of a woman she meets at a concert she attends at Versailles. She is shy, does not speak a word of French, and when the opportunity arises to communicate with Th?r?se, she walks away sheepishly as Th?r?se, herself smitten by Marlene, slips into another car on the train, wishing for the dream that did not happen that night. After this missed opportunity, each woman forges a path toward another destiny. Marlene adopts a Romanian girl who is the product of the brutal era of the Ceausescu dictatorship. Th?r?se searches for looted violins and other stringed instruments that were originally owned by Jewish individuals who perished in the gas chambers. While Marlene and Th?r?se follow these very divergent paths in their lives, there is an undercurrent of an undying passion between these two women. Often in discreet moments, each one brings to light the memory of the other, and in doing so, they not only create a parallel process but also repetitively ignite their incessant longings for the other. An ever-present theme of survival punctuates each section of this work. While on the outside this piece of fiction appears to be seamless, a tapestry woven with beauty and humor and a magical sense of wonder, underneath there is the reminder of the horrors of war and the ramifications therein. The music that resonates with each passage of the book lends itself to a transcendence from the pathos of the human existence to that of the sublime, survival in its quintessential realm.
画面が切り替わりますので、しばらくお待ち下さい。 ※ご購入は、楽天kobo商品ページからお願いします。※切り替わらない場合は、こちら をクリックして下さい。 ※このページからは注文できません。
