Mnemosyne The Parallel Between Literature and the Visual Arts【電子書籍】[ Mario Praz ]

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】Mnemosyne The Parallel Between Literature and the Visual Arts【電子書籍】[ Mario Praz ]

The classic study of the timeless relationship between literature and the visual arts

In his search for a common link between literature and the visual arts, Mario Praz draws on the abundant evidence of mutual understanding and correspondence they have long shared. Praz explains that within literature, each epoch has “its peculiar handwriting or handwritings, which, if one could interpret them, would reveal a character, even a physical appearance,” and while these characteristics belong to the general style of a given period, the personality of the writer does not fail to pierce through. Praz contends that something similar occurs in art. He shows how the likeness between the arts within various periods of history can ultimately be traced to structural similarities that arise out of the characteristic way in which the people of a certain epoch see and memorize facts aesthetically. Mnemosyne, at once the goddess of memory and the mother of the muses, presides over this view of the arts. In illustrating her influence, Praz ranges widely through Western sources, providing an incomparable tour of the literary and pictorial arts.

The Memory Collector is a haunting speculative thriller that unravels the fragile boundaries between memory, identity, and control. In a near-future society where consciousness can be copied, stolen, and sold, one woman awakens at the center of a conspiracy that threatens not only who she isーbut what it means to be human. Elena Ryker wakes in The Forgotten Room, a locked chamber with no recollection of her past. As she stumbles through disjointed recollections in Fragments, a name echoes in her mind: Silas. Her quest for answers leads her to a chilling revelation in The Collectorーa hidden facility harvesting memories for profit and power, where she is told she volunteered. In Silas Black, Elena uncovers a classified file about a rogue memory thief who once worked for the very organization that claims to have created her. But as she slips into Borrowed Lives, experiencing memories that aren't hersーtraumas, joys, fearsーshe realizes she might be more than one person. Her search for truth intensifies in The Man in the Alley, when a stranger recognizes her by another name. With the help of Juno, a hacker in Data Ghosts, Elena learns that stolen memories leave behind digital "ghosts," and her own identity is a composite of many lives. A fractured memory in The Broken Mirror reveals a forgotten loveーSilas was more than a name; he was part of her. In Project Mnemosyne, the facility's ultimate purpose is exposed: to create a "perfect consciousness" by fusing the minds of geniuses, artists, and visionaries into a single artificial entity...

Un groviglio di sentieri Vita di Aby Warburg【電子書籍】[ Hans C. H?nes ]

Atlas, or the Anxious Gay Science【電子書籍】[ Georges Didi-Huberman ]

Aby Warburg’s Mnemosyne Atlas (1925?1929) is a prescient work of mixed media assemblage, made up of hundreds of images culled from antiquity to the Renaissance and arranged into startling juxtapositions. Warburg’s allusive atlas sought to illuminate the pains of his final years, after he had suffered a breakdown and been institutionalized. It continues to influence contemporary artists today, including Gerhard Richter and Mark Dion.

In this illustrated exploration of Warburg and his great work, Georges Didi-Huberman leaps from Mnemosyne Atlas into a set of musings on the relation between suffering and knowledge in Western thought, and on the creative results of associative thinking. Deploying writing that delights in dramatic jump cuts reminiscent of Warburg’s idiosyncratic juxtapositions, and drawing on a set of sources that ranges from ancient Babylon to Walter Benjamin, Atlas, or the Anxious Gay Science is rich in Didi-Huberman’s trademark combination of elan and insight.

Continuing her feminist reconceptualisation of the ways we can experience and study the visual arts, world renowned art historian and cultural analyst, Griselda Pollock proposes a series of new encounters through virtual exhibitions with art made by women over the twentieth century. Challenging the dominant museum models of art and history that have been so exclusive of women's artistic contributions to the twentieth century, the virtual feminist museum stages some of the complex relations between femininity, modernity and representation.

Griselda Pollock draws on the models of both Aby Warburg's Mnemosyne Atlas and Freud's private museum of antiquities as well as Ettinger's concept of subjectivity as encounter to propose a differencing journey through time, space and archive. Featuring studies of Canova 's Three Graces and women artist's modernist reclamations of the female body, the book traverses the rupture of fascism and the Holocaust and ponders the significance of painting and drawing in their aftermath.

Artists featured include: Georgia O'Keeffe, Josephine Baker, Gluck, Charlotte Salomon, Bracha Ettinger and Christine Taylor Patten.

The Poetics of Performance Diagrams【電子書籍】[ Andrej Mir?ev ]

This Element considers the concept of performance diagrams and shows their historical, epistemic and aesthetic functions in theatre and dance. In three sections, the author surveys the architectural model of theatre by Vitruvius, the woodcut of Marlow's Doctor Faustus, Aby Warburg's Mnemosyne-Atlas, the spells and drawings of Antonin Artaud, the performance Paradise Now (the Living Theatre) and the choreography I am 1984 (Barbara Matijevi?). Demonstrating that diagrams can be applied to multiply dramaturgical trajectories, the text reviews their relevance for performance-making, analysis and documentation. The author argues that diagrams provide new tools for theory, practice and archiving, while at the same time enabling reflection on the intersections between poetics and politics. Focusing on the potentiality of diagrams to cut through representation and dichotomies, this Element affirms the visual, corporeal and spatial dimensions of performance-making. In doing so, it elucidates the significance of diagrammatic thinking for performance studies.

Aby Warburg, the founder of a new Science of Culture, the scholar who gave back word to the image; a “militant” intellectual (so wrote Gertrud Bing), for whom no distinction exists between life and thought; pioneer of new research methods, inventing ‘machines’ of knowledge; architect of spaces designed as arenas of thought. The Library for the Science of Culture (transferred from Hamburg to London in 1933) and the Mnemosyne Atlas are the achievements to which the most substantial part of his heritage is linked. The ten essays here collected for the first time, all stemming from the Italian cultural milieu, trace with clarity Warburg’s “living thought”.

Memory, Metaphor, and Aby Warburg's Atlas of Images【電子書籍】[ Christopher D. Johnson ]

The work of German cultural theorist and art historian Aby Warburg (1866?1929) has had a lasting effect on how we think about images. This book is the first in English to focus on his last project, the encyclopedic Atlas of Images: Mnemosyne. Begun in earnest in 1927, and left unfinished at the time of Warburg's death in 1929, the Atlas consisted of sixty-three large wooden panels covered with black cloth. On these panels Warburg carefully, intuitively arranged some thousand black-and-white photographs of classical and Renaissance art objects, as well as of astrological and astronomical images ranging from ancient Babylon to Weimar Germany. Here and there, he also included maps, manuscript pages, and contemporary images taken from newspapers. Trying through these constellations of images to make visible the many polarities that fueled antiquity's afterlife, Warburg envisioned the Atlas as a vital form of metaphoric thought.

While the nondiscursive, frequently digressive character of the Atlas complicates any linear narrative of its themes and contents, Christopher D. Johnson traces several thematic sequences in the panels. By drawing on Warburg's published and unpublished writings and by attending to Warburg's cardinal idea that "pathos formulas" structure the West's cultural memory, Johnson maps numerous tensions between word and image in the Atlas. In addition to examining the work itself, he considers the literary, philosophical, and intellectual-historical implications of the Atlas. As Johnson demonstrates, the Atlas is not simply the culmination of Warburg's lifelong study of Renaissance culture but the ultimate expression of his now literal, now metaphoric search for syncretic solutions to the urgent problems posed by the history of art and culture.

Mnemosyne.

"My Dear Claire,

If I'm writing to you, it's only out of respect for the promise I made, not, as you asked, to tell you everything I see. For I can only see what is shown. . ."

So begins Silence Like Blood, Marie-C?lie Agnant's epistolery novella about Mnemosyne, a Haitian expat returning to her birth country. Encountering a suspicious entrepreneur, a prudent village girl, and a mysterious hermit with a tragic past, Mnemosyne reconciles the muted, weary personalities of her fellow Haitians with beautiful natural landscape around her. With superb heart and direct syntax, Agnant's story cuts through with cinematic detail, an unflinching voice, and the perceptive charm of empathy.

Marie-C?lie Agnant was born in 1953 in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, and has lived in Canada since 1970. Die Rolle der Musen in der russischen Dichtung des Silbernen Zeitalters【電子書籍】[ Olga Levina ]

Die Konstitution des Ged?chtnisses in H?lderlins Hymne 'Mnemosyne'【電子書籍】[ Alexander Mischke ]
