Submitting it to the late Ambrose Bierce, asking him to revise the story, he suggested the retention of the tragic part and so revised it. The story was published and the house failed.＜br /＞ When in 1900 a publisher desired to bring out the story provided I gave it a happy ending, I submitted the matter to Bierce and on August 21, 1900, he wrote me a long letter on the subject of which the following is an extract:＜br /＞ 'I have read twice and carefully, your proposed addition to The Monk, and you must permit me to speak plainly, if not altogether agreeably, of it. It will not do for these reasons and others:＜br /＞ 'The book is almost perfect as you wrote it; the part of the work that pleases me least is my part (underscores Bierce's). I am surprised that you should yield to the schoolgirl desire for that shallowest of all literary devices, a "happy ending," by which all the pathos of the book is effaced to "make a woman holiday." So much did I feel this unworthiness that I hesitated a long time before even deciding to have so much of "odious ingenuity" and "mystery" as your making Benedicta the daughter of the Saltmaster and inventing her secret love for Ambrosius instead of Rochus.＜br /＞ '"Dramatic action," which is no less necessary in a story than in a play, requires that so far as is possible what takes place shall be seen to take place, not related as having previously taken place.... Indeed, you did better than he, for his explanations were of things already known to the reader, or spectator, of the play. Your explanations are needful to an understanding of the things explained; it is they that are needless. All "explanation" is unspeakably tedious, and is to be cut as short as possible. Far better to have nothing to explainーto show everything that occurs, in the very act of occurring. We cannot always do that, but we should come as near to doing it as we can. Anyhow, the "harking back" should not be done at the end of the book, when the d?nouement is already known and the reader's interest in the action exhausted....＜br /＞ 'Ambrosius and Benedicta are unique in letters. Their nobility, their simplicity, their sufferingsーeverything that is theirs stamps them as "beings apart." They live in the memory sanctified and glorified by these qualities and sorrows. If you are able to afford solitude as an introvert then you can maximize your productivity and enter into hyperfocus in an expeditious manner with relative ease. If you are not afforded solitude as an introvert then you will not be able to maximize your productivity, will struggle to enter into hyperfocus, and will have immense difficulty concentrating on completing challenge tasks, especially when you are easily distracted by loud extroverted people who you share an environment with. When introverted people are not afforded solitude, their productivity levels are undermined. This is because, introverted people have immense difficulty concentrating on completing challenge tasks when they are easily distracted by loud extroverted people who they share an environment with. Each person has different levels of introversion and extroversion. Not every introvert is deemed to be a hardcore introvert and not every extrovert is deemed to be a hardcore extravert. Certain people for instance can be slightly more introverted than extroverted. It is also possible for certain people to be slightly more extroverted than introverted if they choose to do so. Certain people can even be ambiverts since they are able to have traits derived from both extroverts and introverts. Introverts are profusely affected by succumbing to early life slavery. Introverted people prefer to never live lives akin to how extroverted people live their lives and extroverted people prefer to never live their lives akin to how introverted people live their lives. In this controlled market economy, introverted people are profusely set back at a young age from being able to work towards reaching their overarching goals and higher aspirations by succumbing to early life for thirteen years of their lives against their own volition. If parents are however willing to home school their offspring then it can allow their descendants to have an additional 13 years or an additional 37.4440 hours to earmark towards reaching their overarching goals and higher aspirations if they choose to do so. If parents are however willing to home school their offspring then it can allow them to circumvent succumbing to the brutalities of early life slavery. Lamentably, most parents choose to be ineffably irresponsible by being unwilling to home school their children. After Union General Ulysses S. Grant captured Fort Henry and Fort Donelson in early 1862, Confederate General Albert Sidney Johnston, widely considered the Confederacys best general, concentrated his forces in northern Georgia and prepared for a major offensive that culminated with the biggest battle of the war to that point, the Battle of Shiloh. On the morning of April 6, Johnston directed an all out attack on Grants army around Shiloh Church, and though Grants men had been encamped there, they had failed to create defensive fortifications or earthworks. They were also badly caught by surprise. With nearly 45,000 Confederates attacking, Johnstons army began to steadily push Grants men back toward the river. As fate would have it, the Confederates may have been undone by friendly fire at Shiloh. Johnston advanced out ahead of his men on horseback while directing a charge near a peach orchard when he was hit in the lower leg by a bullet that historians now widely believe was fired by his own men. Nobody thought the wound was serious, including Johnston, who continued to aggressively lead his men and even sent his personal physician to treat wounded Union soldiers taken captive. But the bullet had clipped an artery, and shortly after being wounded Johnston began to feel faint in the saddle. With blood filling up his boot, Johnston unwittingly bled to death. The delay caused by his death, and the transfer of command to subordinate P.G.T. Beauregard, bought the Union defenders critical time on April 6, and the following day Grants reinforced army struck back and pushed the Confederate army off the field.The Battle of Shiloh lasted two days, but the battle over the battle had just begun. Grants army had just won the biggest battle in the history of North America, with nearly 24,000 combined casualties among the Union and Confederate forces. Usually the winner of a major battle is hailed as a hero, but Grant was hardly a winner at Shiloh. The Battle of Shiloh took place before costlier battles at places like Antietam and Gettysburg, so the extent of the casualties at Shiloh shocked the nation. Moreover, at Shiloh the casualties were viewed as needless; Grant was pilloried for allowing the Confederates to take his forces by surprise, as well as the failure to build defensive earthworks and fortifications, which nearly resulted in a rout of his army. Speculation again arose that Grant had a drinking problem, and some even assumed he was drunk during the battle. In multiethnic, divided societies like Uganda, people who have not been directly affected by harm, atrocity, and abuse go about their daily lives without ever confronting what happened in the past. When victims and survivors raise their voices to ask for help, or when plans are announced to address that harm, it is this unaffected population that see such plans as pointless. They complain about what they perceive as the "needless" time and money that will be spent to fix something that they see as unimportant and, ultimately, block any restorative processes.＜/p＞ ＜p＞Joanna R. Quinn spent twenty years working in Uganda and uses its particular case as a lens through which she examines the failure of deeply divided societies to acknowledge the past. She proposes that the needed remedy is the development of a very rudimentary understandingーwhat she calls "thin sympathy"ーamong individuals in each of the different factions and groups of the other's suffering prior to establishing any transitional justice process.
