【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】City of Wonders【電子書籍】[ Eduardo Mendoza ]
<p><strong>Eduardo Mendoza's classic novel about the birth of Barcelona as a world city, embodied in the rise of the ambitious and unscrupulous Onofre</strong> <strong>Bouvila</strong></p> <p><strong>"Though historical in subject matter, this story of Catalonian enterprise and Barcelonan ambition is thoroughly contemporary in spirit" Jonathan Franzen</strong></p> <p>Stung by the realisation that his father is a fraud and a failure, Onofre Bouvila leaves a life of rural poverty to seek his fortune in Barcelona.</p> <p>The year is 1888, and the Catalan capital is about to emerge from provincial obscurity to take its place amongst the great cities of the world, thanks to the upcoming Universal Exhibition.</p> <p>Thanks to a tip-off from his landlord's daughter, Onofre gets his big break distributing anarchist leaflets to workers preparing for the World Fair. From these humble beginnings, he branches out as a hair-tonic salesman, a burglar, a filmmaker, an arms smuggler and a political dealmaker, in a multifaceted career that brings him wealth and influence beyond his wildest dreams.</p> <p>But, just as Barcelona's rise makes it a haven for gangsters, crooks and spivs, vice begins to fester in Onofre's heart. And the climax to his remarkable story will come just as a second World Fair in 1929 marks the city's apotheosis.</p> <p><strong>Translated from the Spanish by Nick Caistor</strong></p>画面が切り替わりますので、しばらくお待ち下さい。 ※ご購入は、楽天kobo商品ページからお願いします。※切り替わらない場合は、こちら をクリックして下さい。 ※このページからは注文できません。

In Sex and the River Styx, the author's sharp eye and intense curiosity shine through in essays that span his childhood exploring the woods in his rural Connecticut, his days as a circus worker, and his travels the world over in his later years. Here, we meet Hoagland at his best: traveling to Kampala, Uganda, to meet a family he'd been helping support only to find a divide far greater than he could have ever imagined; reflecting on aging, love, and sex in a deeply personal, often surprising way; and bringing us the wonder of wild places, alongside the disparity of losing them, and always with a twist that brings the genre of nature writing to vastly new heights. His keen dissection of social realities and the human spirit will both startle and lure readers as they meet African matriarchs, Tibetan yak herders, circus aerialists, and the strippers who entertained college boys in 1950s Boston. Says Howard Frank Mosher in his foreword, the self-described rhapsodist "could fairly be considered our last, great transcendentalist."

Won't you be my neighbor? For more than thirty years, Fred Rogers was a beloved fixture in American homes. Warm and welcoming, he spoke directly to children--and their parents--about the marvels of the world, the things that worried them, and above all, the importance of being themselves. Dressed in his cardigan and sneakers, Fred Rogers offered a wholesome message of generosity and love that changed the landscape of television and shaped a generation of children. Kindness and Wonder pays tribute to this cultural icon: the unique, gentle man who embodied the best of what we could be. Today's audiences will be reminded of Mr. Rogers's uplifting persona in the TriStar Pictures film A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood, where Tom Hanks stars as the real-life Fred Rogers. Looking back at the history of the show and the creative visionary behind it, pop culture aficionado Gavin Edwards reminds us of the indelible lessons and insights that Mister Rogers conveyed--what it means to be a good person, to be open-hearted, to be thoughtful, to be curious, to be compassionate--and why they matter. Beautifully crafted, infused with Mister Rogers' gentle spirit, and featuring dozens of interviews with people whose lives were touched by Fred Rogers--ranging from Rita Moreno to NFL Hall of Famer Lynn Swann--Kindness and Wonder is a love letter to this unforgettable cultural hero and role model, and the beautiful neighborhood he created.

"Ali's strength and passion for food and her culture shines through. . . . This memoir is a tribute to the extraordinary life and impact she made in twenty-nine years."--Oprah Daily (Best Books of the Year) Fatima Ali won the hearts of viewers as the Fan Favorite of Bravo's Top Chef in season fifteen. Twenty-nine years old, she was a dynamic, boundary-breaking chef and a bright new voice for change in the food world. After the taping wrapped and before the show aired, Fati was diagnosed with a rare form of bone cancer. Not one to ever slow down or admit defeat, the star chef vowed to spend her final year traveling the world, eating delicious food, and making memories with her loved ones. But when her condition abruptly worsened, her plans were sidelined. She pivoted, determined to make her final days count as she worked to tell the story of a brown girl chef who set out to make a name for herself, her food, and her culture. Including writing from Fatima during her last months and contributions by her mother, Farezeh, and her collaborator, Tarajia Morrell, Savor is a deftly woven account and an inspiring ode to the food, family, and countries Fatima loved so much. Alternating between past and present, readers are transported back to Pakistan and the childhoods of both Fatima and Farezeh, each deeply affected by cultural barriers that shaped the course of their lives. From the rustic stalls of the outdoor markets of Karachi to the kitchen and dining room of Meadowood, the acclaimed three-star Michelin restaurant where she apprenticed, Fati reflects on her life and her identity as a chef, a daughter, and a queer woman butting up against traditional views. Savor is a triumphant memoir, at once an exploration of the sense of wonder that made Fatima so special and a shining testament to the resilience of the human spirit. At its core, it is a story about what it means to truly live, a profound and exquisite portrait of savoring every moment.

The constant hope of discovery. The reminder that the world is filled with wonder. When I bird, life is bigger, more vibrant." That is why Susan Fox Rogers is a birder. Learning the Birds is the story of how encounters with birds recharged her adventurous spirit. When the birds first called, Rogers was in a slack season of her life. The woods and rivers that enthralled her younger self had lost some of their luster. It was the song of a thrush that reawakened Rogers, sparking a long-held desire to know the birds that accompanied her as she rock climbed and paddled, to know the world around her with greater depth. Energized by her curiosity, she followed the birds as they drew her deeper into her authentic self, and ultimately into love. In Learning the Birds, we join Rogers as she becomes a birder and joins the community of passionate and quirky bird people. We meet her birding companions close to home in New York State's Hudson Valley as well as in the desert of Arizona and awash in the midnight sunlight of Alaska. Along on the journey are birders and estimable ornithologists of past generations--people like Franklin Delano Roosevelt and Florence Merriam Bailey--whose writings inspire Rogers's adventures and discoveries. A ready, knowledgeable, and humble friend and explorer, Rogers is eager to share what she sees and learns. Learning the Birds will remind you of our passionate need for wonder and our connection to the wild creatures with whom we share the land.

In the spirit of Joyce's Dubliners and Turgenev's A Sportsman's Sketches, these stories comprehensively illuminate a world, describing members of parliament and farm workers, Islamabad society girls and desperate servant women. A hard-driven politician at the height of his powers falls critically ill and seeks to perpetuate his legacy; a girl from a declining Lahori family becomes a wealthy relative's mistress, thinking there will be no cost; an electrician confronts a violent assailant in order to protect his most valuable possession; a maidservant who advances herself through sexual favors unexpectedly falls in love.Together the stories in In Other Rooms, Other Wonders make up a vivid portrait of feudal Pakistan, describing the advantages and constraints of social station, the dissolution of old ways, and the shock of change. Refined, sensuous, by turn humorous, elegiac, and tragic, Mueenuddin evokes the complexities of the Pakistani feudal order as it is undermined and transformed.

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】Virginia Faulkner A Life in Two Acts【電子書籍】[ Brad Bigelow ]
<p>Featured writer for the <em>Washington Post</em> at twenty. Author of a hit novel at twenty-one. Coaxed Greta Garbo out of seclusion for a Hollywood party. Ghostwrote the memoirs of New York’s most famous madam, Polly Adler. It’s no wonder Virginia Faulkner was spoken of as the next Dorothy Parker.</p> <p>But Faulkner also struggled with alcoholism and depression, lost respect for her own work as a writer, and at age forty-two returned to her hometown of Lincoln, Nebraska, unsure what her next move would be. Asked to assemble an anthology to celebrate Nebraska, she joined the University of Nebraska Press and soon found herself fascinated by the challenges of work as an editor. The press, she realized, offered her the opportunity to champion the work of the writer she respected above all others: Willa Cather. And after finding an ideal colleague and life partner in Bernice Slote, Faulkner launched a series of books that helped establish Cather as one of America’s greatest writers.</p> <p>In <em>Virginia Faulkner: A Life in Two Acts</em>, Brad Bigelow tells Faulkner’s storyーone that’s lively, irreverent, and rich in its commitment to literature of lasting importance. Though her own books have since been forgotten, Faulkner left a legacy of achievement and success in American literature against social and personal odds, and her voice and spirit shine forth in the pages of this book.</p>画面が切り替わりますので、しばらくお待ち下さい。

When science meets metaphysics. Towards a new conception of existence【電子書籍】[ Bruno Del Medico ]
<p>We live in an age of profound change, not only technological or social, but also, more quietly, paradigmatic. Our way of thinking about reality is changing. Today, the encounter between science and philosophy is no longer confined to academic circles, but imposes itself forcefully every time we take the discoveries of modern physics seriously. In particular, the term "quantum metaphysics" appears more and more often, disturbing and seductive, like an invitation to review the pillars of our thinking.</p> <p>But what does "quantum metaphysics" really mean? It is not just a linguistic fad, nor is it a misappropriation of scientific concepts. Rather, it is a scenario in which humanity's oldest questionsーwhere do we come from? What is reality?ーfind new urgency in light of the most advanced developments in science.</p> <p>Quantum metaphysics arises where physics admits to having entered mysterious territory. In this "non-local" zone, philosophy takes up the challenge.</p> <p>If classical physics, from Newton to Maxwell, had constructed a reassuring world based on clear and intuitively accessible laws, quantum physics, since the early 20th century, has undermined its foundations. Heisenberg's uncertainty principle, the double-slit experiment, and multiple interpretations (from Everett's many worlds to the more pragmatic l Copenhagen school) have forced philosophers to redefine seemingly trivial concepts such as "object," "event," and "cause."</p> <p>The legacy of these clashes is now bearing fruit. Some physicists, such as Bohm, Wigner, and Wheeler, urge us to rethink reality as purely relational (nothing exists 'in itself', but only 'for' and 'with' another).</p> <p>It is interesting to note how, at the very heart of quantum thinking, ancient intuitions of Western and Eastern philosophy resurface. Parmenides, with his idea of "being one and indivisible," or Buddhism, with its notion of "universal interdependence," find surprising echoes in the technical language of contemporary physicists.</p> <p>This is not a matter of abandoning the rigorous caution of scientific thought, nor of indulging in flights of fancy: on the contrary, quantum metaphysics is the place where both our traditionsーthe critical spirit of the West and the timeless curiosity of humanistsーcan nourish each other.</p> <p>The new frontier that awaits us is precisely here: in the ability to embrace wonder while maintaining rigor, and to inhabit mystery without fearing that it will overwhelm us, but rather knowing that it is the very meaning of our thinking existence.</p> <p>These reflections highlight a crucial point: science and philosophy, often seen as separate worlds, find common ground in the investigation of the ultimate mysteries of existence. In this context, human spirituality fits in as a third fundamental pole. In fact, the desire to discover the profound meaning of realityーwhether through the questions of quantum physics or through philosophical reflectionーis rooted precisely in the spiritual dimension of the human being: that innate yearning for knowledge, wonder, and the transcendent.</p> <p>Spirituality, therefore, is not opposed to science or philosophy, but can be considered the original source of their very quest: it is the tension towards what we still do not understand, the awareness of the limits of rationality, but also the belief that there is a deeper meaning to be discovered.</p>画面が切り替わりますので、しばらくお待ち下さい。 ※ご購入は、楽天kobo商品ページからお願いします。※切り替わらない場合は、こちら をクリックして下さい。 ※このページからは注文できません。
