e-Pedia: New Zealand New Zealand (M?ori: Aotearoa ) is an island nation in the southwestern Pacific Ocean【電子書籍】[ Wikipedia contributors ]

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】e-Pedia: New Zealand New Zealand (M?ori: Aotearoa ) is an island nation in the southwestern Pacific Ocean【電子書籍】[ Wikipedia contributors ]

This carefully crafted ebook is formatted for your eReader with a functional and detailed table of contents. New Zealand (M?ori: Aotearoa ) is an island nation in the southwestern Pacific Ocean. The country geographically comprises two main landmassesーthe North Island (or Te Ika-a-M?ui), and the South Island (or Te Waipounamu)ーand around 600 smaller islands. New Zealand is situated some 1,500 kilometres (900 mi) east of Australia across the Tasman Sea and roughly 1,000 kilometres (600 mi) south of the Pacific island areas of New Caledonia, Fiji, and Tonga. Because of its remoteness, it was one of the last lands to be settled by humans. During its long period of isolation, New Zealand developed a distinct biodiversity of animal, fungal and plant life. The country's varied topography and its sharp mountain peaks, such as the Southern Alps, owe much to the tectonic uplift of land and volcanic eruptions. New Zealand's capital city is Wellington, while its most populous city is Auckland. This book has been derived from Wikipedia: it contains the entire text of the title Wikipedia article + the entire text of all the 902 related (linked) Wikipedia articles to the title article. This book does not contain illustrations. e-Pedia (an imprint of e-artnow) charges for the convenience service of formatting these e-books for your eReader. Mosses from an Old Manse and Other Stories【電子書籍】[ Nathaniel Hawthorne ]

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】Mosses from an Old Manse and Other Stories【電子書籍】[ Nathaniel Hawthorne ]

First published in 1846 in the present form, famous English story writer Nathaniel Hawthorne's book 'Mosses from an Old Manse, and Other Stories' is a collection of fictional short stories.

The collection includes several previously-published short stories, and was named in honor of The Old Manse where Hawthorne and his wife lived for the first three years of their marriage. The first edition was published in 1846.

Hawthorne seems to have been paid $75 for the publication.

Many of the tales collected in Mosses from an Old Manse are allegories and, typical of Hawthorne, focus on the negative side of human nature. Hawthorne's friend Herman Melville noted this aspect in his review "Hawthorne and His Mosses":

This black conceit pervades him through and through. You may be witched by his sunlight,ーtransported by the bright gildings in the skies he builds over you; but there is the blackness of darkness beyond; and even his bright gildings but fringe and play upon the edges of thunder-clouds.

William Henry Channing noted in his review of the collection, in The Harbinger, its author "had been baptized in the deep waters of Tragedy", and his work was dark with only brief moments of "serene brightness" which was never brighter than "dusky twilight".

After the book's first publication, Hawthorne sent copies to critics including Margaret Fuller, Rufus Wilmot Griswold, Edgar Allan Poe, and Henry Theodore Tuckerman. Poe responded with a lengthy review in which he praised Hawthorne's writing but faulted him for associating with New England journals, Ralph Waldo Emerson, and the Transcendentalists. He wrote, "Let him mend his pen, get a bottle of visible ink, come out from the Old Manse, cut Mr. Alcott, hang (if possible) the editor of 'The Dial,' and throw out of the window to the pigs all his odd numbers of the North American Review. A young Walt Whitman wrote that Hawthorne was underpaid, and it was unfair that his book competed with imported European books. He asked, "Shall real American genius shiver with neglect while the public runs after this foreign trash?" Generally, most contemporary critics praised the collection and considered it better than Hawthorne's earlier collection, Twice-Told Tales.

Regarding the second edition, published in 1854, Hawthorne wrote to publisher James Thomas Fields that he no longer understood the messages he was sending in these stories. He shared, "I remember that I always had a meaningーor, at least, thought I had", and noted, "Upon my honor, I am not quite sure that I entirely comprehend my own meaning in some of these blasted allegories... I am a good deal changed since those times; and to tell you the truth, my past self is not very much to my taste, as I see in this book."

Scented Eggshell Mold Candles
Project Three - Cut Glass
Project Four - Snowflake Paper Stencils
Project Five - Homemade French Almond Macarons
Getting Ready your Baking Equipment
Project Six - Stocking Filler for Men: Original Jerky/Pemmican and Sausages
Saucisse Minuit
Jerky
Jerky Marinade
Conclusion
Author Bio
Amazing Animal Book Series
How to Build and Plan Books
Entrepreneur Book Series
Publisher

Introduction

Christmas is a coming, as well as Hanukkah, and as it is the time and season of goodwill and Peace unto All, and blessings upon one and all, you would want to give plenty of gifts to your near and dear ones.

For many of us, who are so busy in the rat race of day to day living, for them, giving gifts equals to going to the nearest store, and buying lots and lots of things, which they can afford or they cannot afford, while ticking the names off the future receivers, from their lists.
Some are lucky enough to tell their secretaries, all right, Ms, or Mrs. XYZ, could you do my Christmas shopping the next time you go around the stores? A majority of men. I have noticed, under this category because seriously speaking, I have not found any man of my acquaintance who really enjoy spending lots and lots of time, shopping, especially in hectic crowds. They just enter a shop, look around, look at the crowds, go to the nearest shelf, pick up whatever is present on that shelf, and get out as fast as they can. And I am not joking!

On the other hand, teenagers, ladies, and children love to spend lots and lots of time just browsing through shops, looking for best bargains, haggling over prices, ? this is a necessary part of the shopping ritual in many parts of the world, even today ? and asking the people around them, whether this item or that item is a better buy, especially when one is buying accessories!

But in this book, I am going to teach you how to make gifts, right at home. And the joy of adding another skill to your repertoire of skills is going to make you feel warm, throughout the holiday season.

It is November now, and you have a whole month, to make these amazing gifts, right at home. I am going to give you tips and techniques as well as points, which you are going to implement, especially when you say to yourself, why did not I think of this before.

Some of these projects include a little bit of cookery including baking and making chocolates. You may also want to know how to make beauty products, full of natural ingredients. And perhaps you may want to keep these gifts for yourself because they look so good, smell so good, and best of all, taste so good.

So enjoy the holiday season, and know that it is much blessed to give than to receive! Also, enjoy this book, because it has been made with lots of mirth, good cheer, and fun. The gifts that you are going to make, were demonstrated by my more experienced friends, while I took photos, and occasionally lend a helping hand so that I could say truly, with hand on heart, hey, I made them ? when actually it is, I helped in their making ? and others were my own projects, where I used to stop midway, in the process to take a snap. That is why, if you think this book to be more like a DIY project book with the instructions given like they do in wiki ? how at least that is going to show you where you are going right, especially in the step-by-step instructions!
So cheers!

"What is the experience of becoming a vampire?"

When I first saw this question on Wiki, Emmett didn't take it seriously. After all, most of the highly praised answers below were stories that were made up out of a brainstorm, in which the vampire was either a magnate or a melancholy young gentleman, essentially a romance novel.

Occasionally, there are a few answers that seriously trace the origin of vampire legends and possible medical explanations, but they are all at the back of the list, with very few people agreeing with them, and apparently most people do not feel that this issue needs to be taken seriously.

The person who posted this question in the first place probably also asked it with a flirtatious attitude.
Emmett also took it as a novel, read a few random answers and then cut to other questions.

At that time, he naturally would not expect that not long after, he actually had the qualification to really answer this question.

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】e-Pedia: Jack and the Beanstalk "Jack and the Beanstalk" is an English fairy tale【電子書籍】[ Wikipedia contributors ]

This carefully crafted ebook is formatted for your eReader with a functional and detailed table of contents. "Jack and the Beanstalk" is an English fairy tale. It appeared as "The Story of Jack Spriggins and the Enchanted Bean" in 1734 and as Benjamin Tabart's moralised "The History of Jack and the Bean-Stalk" in 1807. Henry Cole, publishing under pen name Felix Summerly popularised the tale in The Home Treasury (1845), and Joseph Jacobs rewrote it in English Fairy Tales (1890). Jacobs' version is most commonly reprinted today and it is believed to be closer to the oral versions than Tabart's because it lacks the moralising. The Mirror of Kong Ho【電子書籍】[ Ernest Bramah Smith ]

A lively and amusing collection of letters on western living written by Kong Ho, a Chinese gentleman. These addressed to his homeland, refer to the Westerners in London as barbarians and many of the aids to life in our society give Kong Ho endless food for thought. These are things such as the motor car and the piano; unknown in China at this time.

Excerpt:

ESTIMABLE BARBARIAN,ーYour opportune suggestion that I should permit the letters, wherein I have described with undeviating fidelity the customs and manner of behaving of your accomplished race, to be set forth in the form of printed leaves for all to behold, is doubtless gracefully-intentioned, and this person will raise no barrier of dissent against it.

In this he is inspired by the benevolent hope that his immature compositions may to one extent become a model and a by-word to those who in turn visit his own land of Fragrant Purity; for with exacting care he has set down no detail that has not come under his direct observation (although it is not to be denied that here or there he may, perchance, have misunderstood an involved allusion or failed to grasp the inner significance of an act), so that Impartiality necessarily sways his brush, and Truth lurks within his inkpot.

In an entirely contrary manner some, who of recent years have gratified us with their magnanimous presence, have returned to their own countries not only with the internal fittings of many of our palaces (which, being for the most part of a replaceable nature, need be only trivially referred to, the incident, indeed, being generally regarded as a most cordial and pressing variety of foreign politeness), but alsoーin the lack of highly-spiced actualityーwith subtly-imagined and truly objectionable instances. These calumnies they have not hesitated to commit to the form of printed books, which, falling into the hands of the ignorant and undiscriminating, may even suggest to their ill-balanced minds a doubt whether we of the Celestial Empire really are the wisest, bravest, purest, and most enlightened people in existence.

As a parting, it only remains to be said that, in order to maintain unimpaired the quaint-sounding brevity and archaic construction of your prepossessing language, I have engraved most of the remarks upon the receptive tablets of my mind as they were uttered. To one who can repeat the Five Classics without stumbling this is a contemptible achievement. Let it be an imposed obligation, therefore, that you retain these portions unchanged as a test and a proof to all who may read. Of my own deficient words, I can only in truest courtesy maintain that any alteration must of necessity make them less offensively commonplace than at present they are.

The Sign and immutable Thumb-mark of, Kong Ho

By a sure hand to the House of one Ernest Bramah.

- - - -

Ernest Bramah Smith (1868-1942) was an English author of considerable repute in his day. We now know that Bramah, whose real name was Smith, was a man of erudition and prescience with a unique style of writing that has never been copied. Among his most famous works are: Four Max Carrados Detective Stories (1914), Kai Lung's Golden Hours (1922), The Mirror of Kong Ho (1905) and The Wallet of Kai Lung (1900).

In total Bramah published 21 books and numerous short stories and features. His humorous works were ranked with Jerome K Jerome, and W.W. Jacobs; his detective stories with Conan Doyle; his politico-science fiction with H.G. Wells and his supernatural stories with Algernon Blackwood. George Orwell acknowledged that Bramah's book What Might Have Been influenced his Nineteen Eighty-Four. He created the characters Kai Lung and Max Carrados. Bramah was a recluse who refused to allow his public even the slightest glimpse of his private life - secrecy perhaps only matched by E.W. Hornung, the creator of Raffles, and today, J.D. Salinger.

Bramah also wrote political science fiction. What might Have Been, published in 1907 and republished as The Secret of the League in 1909), is an anti-socialist dystopia reflecting Bramah's conservative political views. It was acknowledged by George Orwell as a source for Nineteen Eighty-Four. Orwell credited it with giving a considerably accurate prediction of the rise of Fascism.

At a time when the English Channel had yet to be crossed by an aeroplane, Bramah foresaw aerial express trains travelling at 10,000 feet, a nationwide wireless-telegraphy network, a proto-fax machine and a cypher typewriter similar to the German Enigma machine.[citation needed]

In 1914, Bramah created Max Carrados, a blind detective. Given the outlandish idea that a blind man could be a detective, in the introduction to the second Carrados book The Eyes of Max Carrados Bramah compared his hero's achievements to those of real life blind people such as Nicholas Saunderson, Lucasian Professor of Mathematics at Cambridge, Blind Jack of Knaresborough the road builder, John Fielding the Bow Street Magistrate of whom it was said he could identify 3,000 thieves by their voices, and Helen Keller.

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】ICTs and the Millennium Development Goals A United Nations Perspective【電子書籍】

This book attempts to create awareness about the UN-MDGs and how various ICT can be harnessed to appeal to different demographics. Current empirical evidence suggests that MDG awareness is relatively low particularly in developed countries, and that the levels of MDG awareness vary considerable across socioeconomic variables or demographics from United Nations perspective. It also examines how ICT can be used to bring about technical and social innovations strengthen livelihoods, support economic development, water and climate resilience and improve the education and health sectors and enhance development opportunities. Several studies are highlighted that reinforce the view that government support and private sector expertise and funding are important factors in ICT-based e-government solutions in developing countries.

The book also builds on the thesis that a strong connection between competencies in mathematics, science, and information communication/technology is required to build logical concepts and critical thinking skills. It also examines the opportunities and barriers of promoting students’ learning skills, including communication, cooperation, collaboration and connection using the Wiki tool under the blackboard platform. Finally, the book also highlights the challenges involved in application of ICT in education. This is significant for educators in order to surmount these obstacles and consequently successfully incorporate ICT into the educational system.

The chapters present the relevant literature on ICTs and the perceived barriers to ICT integration in basic education. All she knows is that her child "is to be reared up in the company of all that is most vile and most degraded in the disease-haunted slums of indigent Paris" and that if she doesn't find him soon he risks becoming a criminal or a drink-sodden reprobate at best.

A Question of Passports

Citizen Bibot of the Town Guard has command of the Porte Montmartre ? the last commandant there, citizen Ferney, was guillotined for having allowed a whole batch of aristos to escape and find safety outside the walls of Paris. Citizen Marat arrives to warn Bibot to be watchful because the Pimpernel has promised to rescue the Duc and Duchesse de Montreux and their family, (who are on their way to the Conciergerie prison) that very evening, but Bibot is determined that the Scarlet Pimpernel will not get one over on him.

Two Good Patriots

Being the desposition of citizeness Fanny Roussell, who was brought up together with her husband, before the Tribunal of the Revolution on a charge of Treason ? both being subsequently acquitted.

The Old Scarecrow

Nobody in the quartier could quite recollect when it was that citizen Lepine, the new public letter-writer first set up in business at the angle formed by the Quai des Augustins and the Rue Dauphine; but he certainly was there on the 28th day of February 1793, when Agnes, with eyes swollen with tears, a market basket on her arm and a look of dreary despair on her young face, turned that self same angle on her way to the Pont Neuf, and nearly fell over the rickety construction which sheltered him and his stock.

Baroness Emma Magdolna Roz?lia M?ria Jozefa Borb?la "Emmuska" Orczy de Orci (23 September 1865 ? 12 November 1947), pen name as Baroness Orczy, was a Hungarian-born British novelist, playwright, and artist of noble origin. She is most known for her series of novels featuring the Scarlet Pimpernel, the alter ego of Sir Percy Blakeney, a wealthy English fop who transforms into a formidable swordsman and a quick-thinking escape artist, representing the original "hero with a secret identity".

Opening in London's West End on 5 January 1905, The Scarlet Pimpernel became a favourite of British audiences.
