A. /Toronto combo that has just celebrated the notable milestone of 25 years of playing together. Adding to the comfort level in the studio for the recording of Friday was the return of the team of co-producer Peter Cardinali and engineer John 'Beetle' Bailey, reprising their roles from previous Monkey House records. Cardinali also plays bass on four tracks. All but two of the tracks on Friday are solo Don Breithaupt compositions. "Book Of Liars", is a cover of a song by Steely Dan's Walter Becker. "As a lifelong Steely Dan fan, Walter's death hit me hard," says Don. "I thought it'd be a nice gesture to do one of his. " This generous 12-song collection sounds cohesive, while possessing enough musical twists and turns to keep things interesting. As has become the norm on MH records, Friday features some notable guests. Guitarist Drew Zingg (Boz Scaggs) and trumpeter Michael Leonhart (Steely Dan) have guested on previous albums and make tasteful contributions here, as does Francois D'Amours (Gino Vannelli), and Snarky Puppy guitarist Mark Lettieri. Ground Up artist Lucy Woodward (Rod Stewart) adds background vocals throughout, while famed vocal quartet The Manhattan Transfer add their magic to the choruses of 'The Jazz Life. ' It's hard to mistake the sound of those four incredible voices together. " Don notes, 'I have a tradition of having at least one poppy, quirky, outlier track on an album. This time, it's '(I Wanna Ride) Shotgun,' which is designed to be fun and funky and stick in people's heads. Pes?ani Sat open up the dance with a grandiose pop rock tune clothed in a garment of lush string arrangements with a beautiful lead melody plus a few simmering guitar solos that scream right into your face. Proces deliver an atmospheric '70s rock tune with a gentle edge and vocals that bear a strong character. At some point it turns into a furious but joyful dance and then straight afterward it becomes a bluesy and jazzy fuzz-rocker with some additional brass. There is an ever-pulsating percussion sound backing up the track, giving it an out-of-control groove. Sani's Eleonor rocks in a straight '60s garage fashion. A bit retro for the time of it's release, but never the less a kick-ass raw beat number with a memorable chorus. KUD blend contemporary funk, soul, psych rock, and garage rock into a hot-blooded rock tune with a classical melody thrown in here and there for good measure and some nice fuzzed-out guitars. Beautiful choirs and the lead organ spice up this tune and make it a wild highlight. Koren give us some dark, bluesy rock with a heavy organ sound-carpet and a skilled axeman who knows to fire beautiful jazzy leads and simmering, eruptive solos from the neck of his axe. Nelija enchant our ears with a gentle acoustic tune that combines the beauty of '70s hippie-folk with elements of traditional music from the Balkan countries. Cvrcak I Mravi's Cekanje is slightly folky, with rich melodic textures - a lightweight but heartwarming pop song with a '60s West Coast flair. They have a great hand for sweet arrangements, as the strings and flute patterns of this song prove. Omega have nothing to do with their Hungarian namesakes and play rather jazzy, late-'60s-style pop, with more US West Coast flair. They sing in their native tongue and might therefore sound a bit far-out for the average listener, but fans of that late-'60s stuff mixing jazz, blues, and pop will find a rich treasure in this song and in this compilation. Give this album a chance if you are a true music lover.

"Even as a kid I was always singing, wherever I was!" As a daughter of two well-known musicians, it was no surprise she chose a creative and musical life as well. "Music in not only the note you sing. You need to really tell a story." So, after years of studying with teachers as Max van Egmond, Astrid Seriese, Floor van Zutphen, Sanna van Vliet and Deborah Carter, she wanted to go even deeper into her performance. She decided to go to acting school. Studying acting with teachers as Nelleke Zitman, Erik v/t Wout, Truus te Selle, brought her a strong understanding of words, subtext and meaning, but also of how to incorporate words, melody, and performance into one strong appearance. Marieke was finally ready to follow her heart's desire into music. From that point on she started performing Jazz. After graduating she focused her work on two main area's: performing as a jazz-singer and writing and playing children's theatre. During this time, she really started focusing on swing jazz and performing with Big bands. For this release she has chosen jazz-standards (some known, others not so known) which had strong lyrics or were little gems melody wise and mixed them with her own style. Never being afraid of opinions or stepping out of the box, Marieke loves to transform songs and has found a way of communicating her emotions through playful rhythmic and melodic interpretations, improvisations, as well as her use of lyrical timing.
