It was released in June 1971 at a time of renewed commercial and critical success for the band, due to the positive reception given to their two previous albums, Ballad of Easy Rider and (Untitled). The album was the second by The Byrds to feature the Roger McGuinn, Clarence White, Gene Parsons, and Skip Battin line up and was mostly recorded in early 1971, whilst the band were in the midst of an extensive tour schedule. Following completion of recording the band were off on tour again and strings, horns, and a gospel choir were added to many of the songs, against the band's wishes. This overproduction is widely considered to undermine what could have been one of the band's better albums and it was poorly reviewed upon release in the US. The album fared better in the UK where it was generally well received. The August 1971 edition of Melody Maker described the album as "one sweet length of bursting Byrds sunshine, so perfect in quality and quantity you'd feel an absolute heel to ask for more". More terrific releases follow and, for a while, Phil is the brightest star on the horizon, but Bogart's death in 1983 means the end of his Boardwalk contract. Signing to The Sisters Of Mercy's own Merciful Release record label, James Ray And The Performance released three cult EPs between 1986 and 1989, before James Ray left to form James Rays Gangwar at the end of 1989. Making an immediate impact with their visceral live shows, and taking a far more rock orientated approach than the industrial/dance/rock hybrid pursued by The Performance, Gangwar release 'Another Million Dollars', backed by 'Hell Blonde Chiara', at the end of 1989. "Without Conscience' backed with 'Destination Assassination' was released by Merciful Release on 12" in 1990, and continuing many of the themes developed by The Performance, but with a more brutal, and aggressive guitar based attack, joining the samples, sequencers and relentless drum machine. James Ray finally issued his full-length debut album in 1992 with "Dios Esta de Nuestro Lado" (Spanish for 'God is on our side'), kicking off with the seven minute single, 'Rev Rev Lowider', an electronic 'Born To Be Wild' for the end of the millennium. Inevitable comparisons were made with label boss Andrew Eldritch and The Sisters Of Mercy, but fans and critics alike were at last recognizing the singer's unique talent, with positive press from everyone from Melody Maker to The Times. As well as extensive liner notes based on new interviews with James Ray, the release includes many rare and previously unreleased demo recordings, available on CD for the first time.

The nucleus has always been Jeffrey Novak, who writes and sings in addition to playing guitar and keyboards. The band began with members of the band Be Your Own Pet rounding out the lineup-theirs was a sound of a teen punk band with more attitude than musicianship, owing more than a little to early Redd Kross. By the time Cheap Time recorded their debut album, the personnel had changed drastically and, in addition to improved musicianship, Novak brought in influences of '70s glam and power pop acts like Sparks and the Quick. Despite the many changes, however, Cheap Time has always been a sum of it's parts. A quintessential ingredient is the low-fi bombast with which they scuzz up their otherwise lightweight brand of simplified 1970s glam punk, packing an impressive amount of adolescent snootiness into two-minute blasts of sound with both precision and melody.
