Rock Candy is no stranger to bad timing and misfired opportunities. For most people the results are of no great consequence but occasionally, the repercussions - especially with years of hindsight to put the loss into perspective - are truly lamentable. The failure of Valentine's sole album is one such case in point. If any melodic rock band should have made a huge international splash then this should have been the one. Formed in New York during the mid-'80's and fronted by the sensational vocalist Hugo Valenti, the band soon made friends amongst the NY music business cognoscenti, leading to major management opportunities (Michael Bolton's manager Louis Levin) and a coveted major label deal with Columbia Records. It was easy to see why they attracted such a passionate reaction, armed with music that was not only powerful and memorable but also displayed a songwriting ability that left the competition in the dust. Amazingly the band's fortunes took a nose dive when executive changes at the label left them high and dry, forcing them to switch to another company, Giant Records, helmed by industry heavyweight Irving Azoff. Produced by Neil Kernon (Autograph, Queensryche, Lynch Mob) the album was eventually released in late 1990, and it received a great reception from the melodic rock aficionados. Packed with incredible songs, ranging from gilt-lined AOR such as 'Runnin' On Luck Again', 'Too Much Is Never Enough', to the pomp blast of 'Where Are You Now' and Once In A Lifetime'. But the icing on the cake must surely be 'Never Said It Was Gonna Be Easy', one of the greatest power ballads of all time.

Arguably, Night are one of the great lost acts of the late '70s/early '80s. Formed in London as a somewhat ad-hoc pub rock band going under the handle of Filthy McNasty, and fronted by two superlative vocalists, Chris Thompson (previously of Manfred Mann's Earth Band) and Stevie Lange (wife of super producer Robert 'Mutt' Lange). They secured a loyal following on the club circuit and were eventually offered a record deal from Planet Records, an American based label affiliated to Warner Bros. Night's debut album certainly garnered critical and commercial attention, enough in fact to secure two hit singles in the lucrative American market place. Whilst the album stalled sales wise, the future still looked extremely promising and so with enthusiastic support they set about recording the follow-up record, Long Distance. Whilst the debut had been recorded during an extensive sojourn in Los Angeles, this time around, mainly for financial reasons, they opted to record in London. They also chose to switch producer and enlisted the services of bright young upstart Tim Friese-Green (Touch, Praying Mantis). It was a wise decision, as the album showcased a more strident style, moving away from the previous comparison to Fleetwood Mac, towards more forceful and harder rock laced with tougher guitars and solid hooks, a sound somewhat reminiscence of REO Speedwagon and Survivor. Released in 1980, the album, despite the undeniably good songwriting displayed, failed to ignite commercial interest. It also suffered from label politics, with Planet records effectively disowning the band and album, despite some great reviews and encouraging reactions at several American FM radio stations. But Long Distance is one of the best overlooked albums of the era.

Those preconceptions were shattered when they released 'Trouble's Coming' last summer. Hitting a melting pot of fiery rock riffs and danceable beats, they delivered something fresh, unexpected and yet entirely in tune with what they'd forged their reputation with. When Mike Kerr and Ben Thatcher sat down to talk about making a new album, they knew what they wanted to achieve. It involved a conscious return to their roots, back when they had made music that was influenced by Daft Punk, Justice, and Philippe Zdar of Cassius. It also called for a similar back-to-basics approach to what had made their self-titled debut album so thrilling, visceral and original. Those traits pulsate throughout the new single and title track. Kerr's spiralling bass riff casts an hypnotic allure as it grows in intensity, while his vocals switch at will between a raw rock roar and a soulful falsetto. It's underpinned by Thatcher's thundering beats, his taut rhythms infused with groove-laden hi-hats. After setting the tone with 'Trouble's Coming', the album opens in breathless, take-no-prisoners style with the fierce metallic grooves of 'Who Needs Friends' hitting an early visceral peak. Royal Blood further reference their fresh array of influences by deploying vocodered vocals on 'Million & One' before dynamically switching between the biggest contrasts of their sound with 'Limbo'. Already a fan favourite having been a regular during the duo's 2019 shows, 'Boilermaker' lives up to it's reputation and is more than matched by 'Mad Visions', which evokes a hyper-aggressive Prince. It ends with a final surprise in the shape of the stark piano ballad 'All We Have Is Now', a vulnerable and revealing reminder to live in the moment. This new approach manifested itself in the duo's decision to produce the majority of 'Typhoons' themselves. 'Boilermaker' was produced by Queens of the Stone Age frontman Josh Homme, the two bands having first connected when Royal Blood supported them on a huge North American tour. Meanwhile, the multiple Grammy Award winner Paul Epworth produced 'Who Needs Friends' and contributed additional production to 'Trouble's Coming'.
