とアルバン・ベルク[1885-1935]は、無調主義、十二音主義による前衛的な創作活動を展開して、今日に至る世界的に多くの作曲家に影響を与えました。 このセットには、かれら新ウィーン楽派の作曲家たちに拠って1906年から1950年のあいだに書かれた全23作品（1951年のヴァルガと1953年コリッシュによる、シェーンベルクの『幻想曲』の別演奏を含む）が収められています。【『現代音楽の擁護者』シュトゥッケンシュミットが推進したプロジェクト】1949年から1965年にかけて収録された音源の数々は、戦後、ベルリンRIAS現代音楽部門のディレクターを務めていたハンス・ハインツ・シュトゥッケンシュミット[1901-1988]の主導で実現したもの。ドイツの著名な音楽学者、音楽評論家で、作曲家でもあったシュトゥッケンシュミットは、シェーンベルクをはじめ、ブラッハーやブゾーニなどの著作でも知られ、なかでもシェーンベルクについてはその歴史的意義を早くから評価した「現代音楽の擁護者」ともいうべき人物。 シュトゥッケンシュミットは、やはり代表的なシェーンベルク学者であり、指揮者としても知られたヨーゼフ・ルーファーとともに、亡命先から帰国した音楽家たちが、こうした放送ドキュメンタリーに専念できるよう雇用の環境作りに尽力しました。【作曲家にごく近い演奏家たちによる貴重なドキュメント】ここで演奏を担当する超一流の演奏家陣は、ほとんどがシェーンベルクの弟子たち、あるいは知人のいずれかといった、作曲家周辺のごく身近の親しい人たちから構成されているのも重要なポイント。ヴァイオリンのコリッシュ、ピアノのシュトイアーマンやエルゼ・C.クラウス、指揮者のツィリヒは師シェーンベルクによって才能を開花させ、ピアノのシュタドレンやヴァイオリンのヴァルガは、シェーンベルク、ヴェーベルン、ベルクと親交がありました。 Previously known principally for his operatic and dramatic works such as I Gioelli della Madonna, Wolf-Ferrari built up a body of instrumental music that was played across Europe during his lifetime. Association with Mussolini's Fascist regime cast a shadow over his postwar reputation and only in recent years have listeners been able to rediscover the music of an inveterate Romantic. The First Violin Sonata was written while the 19-year-old Wolf-Ferrari was still studying with Joseph Rheinberger in Munich. However, it's long-breathed melodies and grasp of large-scale form bely it's composer's relative inexperience. All the same, the Brahmsian contours of the First Sonata are succeeded in the Second by a more personal idiom, one that more successfully integrates Wolf-Ferrari's lifelong allegiances to both German and Italian schools of composition. Dating from 1901, it sings with a stern, almost austere passion rather in the manner of the composer's Belgian contemporary Cesar Franck; the second of the sonata's two movements has an especially sacred character and ends in a mood of serenity. The Third Sonata is a very late work, dating from 1943, while Wolf-Ferrari was giving concert tours through Axis countries. This album was recommended by Classics Today for the 'eloquently sustained' performance of Trio Arche, displaying 'a whimsical discursiveness... that might be described as the lovechild of Schubert and Faure.' Much the same might be said of Wolf-Ferrari's piano music on the evidence of this new recording by the Italian pianist Costantino Catena, who has made many well-received albums with the Camerata Tokyo. To open the album, Catena has made his own completion of an early, substantial (19-minute) Bagatelle that Wolf-Ferrari left unfinished. Theatricality and high contrast mark the Bagatelle throughout, as one would expect from an experienced composer for the stage, and they lend beguiling variety to the other first recordings here, of Variations on the minuet from Verdi's Falstaff, a Chopin-Phantasie in B minor and a Scherzino, all dating from Wolf-Ferrari's prodigious twenties when he was the toast of new Italian music. Wolf-Ferrari turned to the Romantic genre of character-piece in three Impromptus Op.13 (1904) and three Klavierstucke Op.14 (1905), but he addressed the form in a personal and authentic manner. The organist and organ builder Costanzo Antegnati, son of the renowned Graziadio Antegnati who built the organ for the church of Santa Barbara in Mantua played on this recording, bears witness to the fact that Bariolla was still alive in 1608, naming him in his Arte Organica (Brescia, 1608) as one of the many 'illustrious and most excellent composers' that inspired him to write his treatise. The only copy currently known of Ottavio Bariolla's Ricercate per sonar d'Organo (the original has been lost) is contained within the German organ tablature held in the Biblioteca Nazionale di Torino (Fondo Giordano 8). This tablature, which has been dated to between 1637 and 1640, was drawn up by scribes working in southern Germany and is the largest manuscript source of keyboard music, featuring an incredible 1770 compositions. O alter Duftコメント:Pierrot lunaire, premiered in Berlin in 1912, is a series of twenty-one short melodramas for voice and five instruments on German translations of poems by Albert Giraud. Here the composer first introduces Sprechgesang (speech-song), a technique that revolutionised declamation. Schoenberg wanted the piece to be ironic, at once tender and grotesque, in the manner of cabaret songs. Patricia Kopatchinskaja, the violinist who is also an occasional actress, had long dreamt of playing and reciting this unique work. It was a pain in her arm preventing her from playing the violin that one day propelled her into the role of narrator: 'All my life I have felt that I was Pierrot. Every time I played this piece on the violin when I was a student, I would say the words in my head.' She has now played and performed Pierrot in many venues around the world, including the Berlin Philharmonie, several cities in the United States, the Netherlands, Switzerland and Sweden. Now she has assembled a number of her musician friends and decided to record it for posterity.
