Unraveling the Dark Secrets of a Victorian Murder Mystery【電子書籍】[ Fergus Hume ]

In "The Black Carnation," Fergus Hume weaves a masterful tale of mystery and intrigue set within the opulent world of Victorian society. The narrative unfolds with the disappearance of a young woman and the subsequent unraveling of tightly held secrets, all thematically intertwined with symbolism. Hume's atmospheric prose combined with vivid characterizations and a suspenseful plot offers readers a lens into the darker facets of human desire and moral ambiguity, typical of the detective fiction genre emerging in this era. The novel, rich in Gothic elements, captures the societal tensions and the undercurrents of both humor and tragedy characteristic of Hume's style. Fergus Hume, a pioneer of detective fiction, was influenced by the burgeoning cultural milieu of late 19th-century England, where urbanization led to newfound complexities in human interactions and ethics. Hailing from New Zealand, Hume's experiences shaped his narrative voice, driving him to explore themes of justice and identity through mystery. His debut novel, "The Mystery of a Hansom Cab," paved the way for his subsequent works, including "The Black Carnation," which further solidified his status in the literary canon. I highly recommend "The Black Carnation" to readers who appreciate intricately plotted mysteries that offer both entertainment and a reflective exploration of societal norms. Hume's distinctive blend of suspense and psychological depth not only engages the reader but also prompts contemplation on the moral choices that define us.

The novel caused quite a sensation upon its release due to its controversial subject matter and thinly veiled references to the real-life relationship between Oscar Wilde and Lord Alfred Douglas, which was scandalous at the time. "The Green Carnation" is considered one of the earliest examples of "gay literature" in English, although it's important to note that the term "gay" did not have the same connotations at the time of publication as it does now.The story follows the lives of two young men, Esm? Amarinth and Lord Reginald Hastings, as they navigate the social and cultural landscape of late Victorian England. The green carnation becomes a symbol of their relationship and their defiance of conventional morality."The Green Carnation" is notable for its wit, satire, and social commentary, as well as its exploration of themes such as identity, sexuality, and the constraints of society. While controversial in its time, the novel is now considered an important work in the history of LGBTQ+ literature and has been studied for its insights into Victorian attitudes towards homosexuality.

John T. Ahern's award-winning debut novel "The Carnation Street Life Estate" is a suspenseful thrill ride that readers of Christian fiction will love. In this story, unintended consequences derailed Marge McAllistar's gift to Frank Wilson. The life estate she bequeathed in her Will and Trust was supposed to make his life better. The rest of her estate was supposed to make her lone heir, Bethany's life better too. But Marge could not predict how her life estate gift would lead to multiple murders and land Frank in jail. With a promise, an unlikely ally's help, and prayers a multi-layers conspiracy is unveiled, and Frank finds himself desperately asking the Lord for forgiveness. Life is going well for Frank Wilson. He escaped his previous life as Kevin Leland and people no longer want to kill him. He has good friends, a church, a great place to live near the Pacific Ocean, and makes a good living as a finish carpenter. Little does he realize that a life estate for his apartment would upend all that. While the life estate was meant to be Marge McAllistar's gift to Frank, it brought with it malignant side effects. Marge would never have granted Frank such a gift if she had known what fury it brought. But how could she have predicted the intense anger it would ignite in Samuel, her niece Bethany's husband. Or how he would become obsessed with driving Frank out of the now rent-free apartment his wife owns. Frank's tolerance to Samuel's harassment tests his Christian witness. Especially as Samuel's anger and frustration escalate. Unbeknownst to Frank or Bethany is that Samuel's anger and frustration lure him into a criminal enterprise. The men Samuel brings into his and Bethany's life are more dangerous than he ever imagined ? and in this Christian thrill-ride, they must face a life-threatening and faith-testing challenge like no other.

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】Black Print with a White Carnation Mildred Brown and the Omaha Star Newspaper, 1938?1989【電子書籍】[ Amy Helene Forss ]

Mildred Dee Brown (1905?89) was the cofounder of Nebraska’s Omaha Star, the longest running black newspaper founded by an African American woman in the United States. Known for her trademark white carnation corsage, Brown was the matriarch of Omaha’s Near North Sideーa historically black part of townーand an iconic city leader. Her remarkable life, a product of the Reconstruction era and Jim Crow, reflects a larger American history that includes the Great Migration, the Red Scare of the post?World War era, civil rights and black power movements, desegregation, and urban renewal.

Within the context of African American and women’s history studies, Amy Helene Forss’s Black Print with a White Carnation examines the impact of the black press through the narrative of Brown’s life and work. Forss draws on more than 150 oral histories, numerous black newspapers, and government documents to illuminate African American history during the political and social upheaval of the twentieth century. During Brown’s fifty-one-year tenure, the Omaha Star became a channel of communication between black and white residents of the city, as well as an arena for positive weekly news in the black community. Brown and her newspaper led successful challenges to racial discrimination, unfair employment practices, restrictive housing covenants, and a segregated public school system, placing the woman with the white carnation at the center of America’s changing racial landscape.

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】A White Sport Coat and a Pink Carnation【電子書籍】[ Joseph Murphy ]

The story is a fast-paced human drama. High school is a time of innocence, a time for fun, when adolescents establish a set of values that will last a lifetime. In 1957, teens were carousing all across the country, as the 1950s were in full roar. The Bronx, New York was no different. Relive the adventures of the in crowd at St. Helenas Catholic high school as they learn the importance of friendship and the meaning of love.

On a lark, four high school seniors celebrate an 18th birthday party in the school cafeteria. The only problems were that the school was closed for the night, and they brought along a keg of beer for the party. The nuns living three floors above, hear the commotion and think a rape is in process and phone the police, causing all Hell to break loose.

The influence of the church and school seemed limitless. Most of the clergy served as a maturing authority to guide their students along the straight and narrow path. However, one rouge administrator had his own interpretation of the Lords missive. From this Brothers prospective, it was the principle behind the punishment that mattered. Responsible adults would be developed out of irresponsible boys. His actions and excessive punishments aimed at breaking down a select few pranksters would only serve as a rallying point to unify the student body and faculty to support the targets of his vengeance.

This book summarizes recent advances in carnation genome research for large-scale transcriptome analysis, the draft genome sequence, DNA markers and genome mapping, flower color, mutations, flower opening, vase life, interspecific hybridization, fragrance.

The carnation is one of the most important ornamental flowers in the world, along with the chrysanthemum and the rose. The genus Dianthus is a member of the Caryophyllaceae and includes more than 300 species of annuals and evergreen perennials. Modern carnation cultivars are the product of highly complex hybridization, owing to their long history of breeding.

The carnation genome was first sequenced in ornamentals by a Japanese research team in 2013. The carnation has been genetically improved over the years, and there are various types of flower colors, shapes, patterns, and sizes. In this book, the molecular mechanism of flower color development and the transposable elements responsible for this diversity are studied in detail. In addition, it presents breeding and physiological research for improving flower vase life, one of the most important traits in ornamentals, based on a model of ethylene susceptible flowers. To improve selection efficiency, genomic analysis tools including DNA markers and genetic linkage maps are also highlighted. In closing, the book discusses mutation breeding technologies such as ion-beam irradiation and genetically modified carnations.
