The Historical Fiction piece, "The Glen", takes place during the Irish War of Independence, a series of bloody conflicts that lasted through a number of years between Ireland, England, and the Irish Loyalists. The main characters of this story are childhood friends growing up in a politically torn country. When conflicts of beliefs put the two on opposite sides, their friendship is tested to the point of breaking.
"Eastwatch" is a fantastical short story, placing the reader in the middle of a Nordic raid on a walled outpost of an enemy empire. The raid is led by a shieldmaiden bent on revenge for her family against the empire that took them from her. Her desire for vengeance puts the crew at risk, and the crew's captain begins to question their ability to take on the formidable force of the empire.
"Brain Scramble" is a loose interpretation of a traumatic experience during the Iraq war. Following an IED explosion and enemy attack, "Mac" must exfiltrate with a wounded Marine on his back while suffering from the effects of a concussion. The enemy pushes the attack, and the Marines have to fight their way to safety.
"The Beach" is a short Historical Fiction story about "Will", a Private serving in the United States Army during the Normandy Invasion. As his landing vehicle hits the beach, Will is thrown from the craft and into the water, where he is pulled down under the red waves. Will must struggle to shore and fight his way up the beach, or he will be cut down by the enemy like so many of his brothers in arms.
The final story, "Buried", is from the perspective of a fourteen-year-old Combat Engineer serving in the trenches of France during World War I. The young engineer works as a tunneler, and when an enemy artillery shell detonates nearby his posting, a wall of debris and dirt entombs the young man and his comrades. The fight for air begins immediately, accompanied by the knowledge that he might be the only hope his platoon mates have in surviving the crushing walls of dirt now pinning them in the earth.

In 2087, the weapon of choice is the warmek, a towering humanoid monster capable of taking the firepower of a tank unit any place an infantryman can go. On the battlefields of Britain, occupying EuroForce meks clash with giant machines piloted by British secessionists.

The Charlemagne sidestepped and rushed forward, spike held high and aimed down. Rather than flinch back in the face of the fearsome weapon, as most pilots tended to do, Halsey stepped forward, raising his own mek's right arm.

Lavalle thrust down at the Liberator, trying for a tricky but instantly fatal thrust at the join of torso and head. Halsey batted the spike down and aside with his right arm, snapping it back in a steel-knuckled bitchslap across the Charlemagne's faceplate. As Lavalle's mek stumbled, Halsey pivoted and put a point-blank cannon shell into its torso. The shot struck low down and exploded on untouched armour.
Following up quickly, Halsey raised his combat spike but instead thrust the barrel of his cannon at the Charlemagne's faceplate. The command mek overbalanced, toppling backwards. Halsey fired another point-blank shot into it, then raised the spike for a killing thrust.

A point-blank Maximilian Alpha strike hammered into the Liberator's rear armour, flaying most of it away and sending Halsey staggering forward. Lavalle kicked out, impacting the Liberator's lower leg. Halsey felt his mek start to pitch forward, saw the metal face of the Charlemagne coming up and felt a railgun round tear into his mek's vitals.

The Liberator crashed down on top of Lavalle's Charlemagne. Halsey started hammering on the cockpit with his right arm as he tried to disentangle himself. Any second now the Max would finish him off from behind….

The Armageddon War continues. The streets and fields of Britain are ablaze. 'Shotgun' Mike Halsey fights for freedom whether his weapon is a monster warmek, a sawed-off shotgun or his own fists.
What started in Standing Alone continues in this fast paced, furious, science-fiction action thrill ride. Blood, battle and giant meks!

Welcome to the British War of Independence.

All This Hell U.S. Nurses Imprisoned by the Japanese【電子書籍】[ Evelyn M. Monahan ]

Nurses Imprisoned by the Japanese【電子書籍】[ Evelyn M. Monahan ]

Heroic accounts of American women who faced combat, surrender, and captivity. "One chapter in the annals of World War II that must be told." ーRear Admiral Frances Shea Buckley, Nurse Corps, US Navy (Ret.)

Before December 1941 drew to a close, five navy nurses on Guam became the first American military women of WWII to be taken prisoner by the Japanese. More than seventy army nurses survived five months of combat conditions in the jungles of Bataan and Corregidor before being captured, only to endure more than three years in prison camps. In all, nearly one hundred nurses became POWs.

Many of these army nurses were considered too vital to the war effort to be evacuated from the Philippines. Though receiving only half the salary of male officers of the same rank, they helped establish outdoor hospitals and treated thousands of casualties despite rapidly decreasing supplies and rations. After their capture, they continued to care for the sick and wounded throughout their internment in the prison camps.

When freedom came, the U.S. military ordered the nurses to sign agreements with the government not to discuss their horrific experiences. Evelyn Monahan and Rosemary Neidel-Greenlee have conducted interviews with survivors and scoured archives to uncover the heroism and sacrifices of these brave women. All This Hell "adds a tremendous chapter to the narrative of women prisoners in wartime by following a cast of characters almost cinematically through their daily routines and their reflections recorded in letters, diaries, and interviews" ( Rain Taxi).

"Based upon both oral histories and published biographical and autobiographical accounts, the book provides a readable and gripping introduction to the topic for all readers." ー Library Journal

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】Guns Against the Reich Memoirs of an Artillery Officer on the Eastern Front【電子書籍】[ Petr Mikhin ]

"[A] powerful autobiography from a Russian veteran of Stalingrad, Kursk and numerous other battles . . . as he fought his way from Moscow to Vienna." ー Military Illustrated
In three years of war on the Eastern Frontーfrom the desperate defense of Moscow, through the epic struggles at Stalingrad and Kursk to the final offensives in central Europeーartillery-man Petr Mikhin experienced the full horror of battle.
In this vivid memoir he recalls distant but deadly duels with German guns, close-quarter hand-to-hand combat, and murderous mortar and tank attacks, and he remembers the pity of defeat and the grief that accompanied victories that cost thousands of lives. He was wounded and shell-shocked, he saw his comrades killed and was nearly captured, and he was threatened with the disgrace of a court martial. For years he lived with the constant strain of combat and the ever-present possibility of death. Mikhin recalls his experiences with a candor and an immediacy that brings the war on the Eastern Frontーa war of immense scale and intensityーdramatically to life.
"Mikhin's memoirs give us a very valuable picture of life in the Red Army during four years of intense non-stop fighting against a determined and skilled enemy. This allows us to follow the evolution of the Red Army from the nearly defeated force of 1941 to the skilled military machine of 1945, and helps illuminate the price that the Soviet soldiers paid for victory." ーHistory of War
"A fast-paced, interesting read that recounts stories of courage under fire and dedication to duty . . . I highly recommend this book." ーMilitary Review

A Frenchman's Duty: A Foot Soldier's Journey Through the First World War (3rd. ed.)【電子書籍】[ J. Michael Dumoulin ]

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】A Frenchman's Duty: A Foot Soldier's Journey Through the First World War (3rd. ed.)【電子書籍】[ J. Michael Dumoulin ]

A quarter century earlier in a disastrous three-week Prussian War, France had lost its eastern-most regions, Alsace and Lorraine, but every patriotic Frenchman knew France was destined to get them back.

When Germany invaded France in 1914 and the war approached the du Nord region, Arthur, a 20-year-old butcher from Roubaix, set out to enlist. It was his duty, and the duty of every able-bodied Frenchman to protect France from the invading "Boch." Everyone said it would be a short war like the last one. He would be home by Christmas, or at least by the beginning of Lent, certainly by Easter.

"A Frenchman's Duty" is a true story, chronicling Arthur's four and a half years of service in his own words, from his own hand-penned journal, transcribed; translated; annotated by a 30-year military veteran with context and the perspective of the last 100 years; and illustrated with nearly 50 vintage postcards and photographs.

Arthur describes to readers his induction and training as a foot soldier in October, 1914, then his first introduction to battle. He records his experiences at Verdun, in the Marne and Somme, in Belgium, and the day the Armistice brought peace to Europe. His journal entries about seeing a war plane for the first time; cooking for his officers and comrades; mercilessly shelled and pinned down by snipers; and being lost in enemy trenches and on the battlefield in the fog with pack mules in his charge, are all first-person accounts of battles not found in other biography or history books about the war. Arthur details the quieter sides of the war, too: rotations out of the trenches; PTSD, then called "shell shock;" interactions with civilians required to put him up for the night; and his leaves, or "permissions," to see family and friends. He gives a face to the personal side of a soldier's life, in and out of battle, something still relevant today.

"A Frenchman's Duty," is Colonel (USAF, ret.) John Michael Dumoulin's eighth book. It is written around his grandfather's unpublished 200-page hand-written, literally war-torn war journal. Each chapter begins with an entry from Arthur's fresh and honest notes, followed by carefully-researched historic, geopolitical, social, and technological context.

Of the 8 million French soldiers who fought in that war, 7 million spent time in combat, some in Russia and in Africa, but most along the Western Front where Arthur fought. Arthur survived the war, so this story isn't one of those where the hero dies a sad, sudden death at the very end of the book.

Although Arthur's diary records the unimaginable horror in war, it is an uplifting read. Like the best-seller "Unbroken" by Laura Hillenbrand, the book reveals the human sides of poise under fire, faith, duty to family and country, a sense of place, and the challenge of wrestling with demons and keeping them locked away.

God Makes Angels and Navy Corpsmen A KoreanA Korean War Veteran's Memories of the War and Life【電子書籍】[ Joseph Barna ]

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】God Makes Angels and Navy Corpsmen A KoreanA Korean War Veteran's Memories of the War and Life【電子書籍】[ Joseph Barna ]

I was knocked down by a shell. As I found myself laying on my back, the half-full flamethrower tank pinning me to the ground, a North Korean soldier came at me with his bayonet. In his quilted suit, he seemed to come out of nowhere. I can still see his face and smell the garlic on his breath. As he lunged at me, I was able to turn, but he stabbed my upper left arm with his bayonet. I had a double-barrel shotgun taped on the arm of my flamethrower and gave him both barrels. I think I blew him in half. The battle kept going on around me. Weapons fire was all around me, and I heard other boys being hit and falling. I laid there feeling weak as blood from my deep wound seeped out on the Korean dirt. I must have been ready to blackout when I heard a familiar voice say, “Joe, if I don’t close up that wound, you’ll die.” (Paragraph italicized.)

From growing up in a small Pennsylvania town, through Marine Corps boot camp and training, and finally, remembering and coping with buried memories decades later, Korean War combat veteran Joseph Barna recounts his life events that will put a tear in your eye and a smile on your face.

An "immensely intriguing" new approach "that can successfully combat the shame, anxiety, and blame that failing induces too readily in our society" ( Laurie Hollman, PhD, author of Unlocking Parental Intelligence).
We spend much of our lives trying to cope with failure. For many of us, adults and children alike, the prospect of failure looms as a debilitating concept in our minds. It can not only stop us from succeedingーit can stop us from even trying.
Fail Brilliantly proposes a radical shift: erase the word and concept of failure from the realms of education and human endeavors. Replace it with new words and concepts. This shift in position has the potential to transform our lives . . . and ultimately reshape our definition of success.

Now with all new content by John Ringo!

The aliens had arrived

With gifts, warnings, and an offer we
couldn't refuse....

Our choice was simple: we could be cannon fodder, or we could be ... fodder. We could send our forces to fight and die (as only humans can) against a ravening horde that was literally feeding on its interstellar conquestsーor remain as we wereーvirtually weaponless and third in line for brunch.

We chose to fight.

Thanks to alien technology and sheer guts, the Terrans on two worlds fought the Posleen to a standstill. Thank God there was a moment to catch our breath, a moment, however brief, of peaceー.

Now, for the survivors of the Barwhon and Diess Expeditionary Forces, it was a chance to get some distance from the blood and misery of battle against the Posleen centaurs. A blessed chance to forget the screams of the dying in purple swamps and massacres under searing alien suns.

For Earth it was an opportunity to flesh out their force of raw recruits with combat-seasoned veterans. Political, military and scientific blundering had left the Terran forces in shambles-and with the Posleen Invasion only months away, these shell-shocked survivors might be the only people capable of saving the Earth from devastation.

If the veterans had time to lick their wounds.

Because the Posleen don't read schedules.

At the publisher's request, this title is sold without DRM (Digital Rights Management).

Vetville: True Stories of the U.S. Marines at War and at Home【電子書籍】[ Mike Sager ]

Marines at War and at Home【電子書籍】[ Mike Sager ]

Mike Sager has been called "the Beat poet of American Journalism." Vetville collects the best of his stories about the Marine Corps. Together this tetralogy of long-form pieces charts a life story arc of the modern Devil Dog.

It begins at Camp Pendleton, CA, on field exercises with Lieutenant Colonel Bob Sinclair and his BN One-Fourーthe 1st Battalion, 4th Marine Regimentーas they prepare to invade Afghanistan, the first wave of American combatants sent to war after the deadly terrorist attacks of 9/11. "You realize that your country has been attacked," he says. "You wanna strike back."

From there, we head to the Wounded Warriors Barracks at Camp Lejeune where we meet Ringo, Cebula, Wildman, Lieutenant Colonel Maxwell, and the rest of the men recuperating together at a unique barracks where wounded Marines harness their esprit de corps to help one another through emotional and physical recovery. We hear their battlefield stories of war and heroism. And their stories of injury and despair. And we discover the soft center that lives beneath the tough exterior shell of the Marine Corps mystiqueーa deep love of comrades and country. "Wounded Warriors" was awarded a number of awards, including The Military Writers Society of America Founder's Award.

In "Vetville" we visit a small farm in the mountains of Tennessee, where a Marine sergeant, in an effort to save himself and others, has opened his doors to veterans whose deep wounds don't necessarily show. And, we catch up with John Cebula, one of the men encountered aboard the Wounded Warriors barracks. Without a supportive network around him, he has turned to drugs.

Finally, in "Fifty Grand in San Diego," we focus on the return to civilian life after the corps, with a look at a modern version of the American Dreamーan ex-Marine playing Mr. Mom and finding his silver lining in a dirty diaper.

Wounded Warriors was awarded:
*The American Author's Association Golden Quill Award
*The Military Writers Society of America Founder's Award

"Entertaining and fascinating. At the end of the book, you will find yourself changed in some way. Call it empathy, or just a compassionate response to have seen and become aware of another man's pain and suffering; but you will remember these men that you read about long after putting this book to rest." --Military Writers Society of America

Sager has written a gripping account of how these Marines are coping with their combat-altered lives. An experienced interviewer, he lets the Marines' stories speak for themselves…Powerful stuff." --Leatherneck, Magazine of the Marines

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】From Lightnings to MiGs A Cold War Pilot's Operations, Test Flying & an Airspeed Record【電子書籍】[ Russ Peart ]

A Royal Air Force pilot chronicles his career flying during the Cold War in this memoir featuring previously unseen photographs.
It was supposed to be just a training flight. The two Soviet-manufactured MiG 21s, each with two practice bombs and four air-to-ground rockets, were lined up on the runway in Bangladesh at the height of the Cold War, when air traffic control suddenly reported an incursion by Indian Air Force Jaguars. Though ill-equipped for combat, the two MiGs were scrambled.
One of the MiGs' pilots was an RAF officerーSquadron Leader Russell Peart. On a seven-month loan to the Bangladeshi Air Force, Peart suddenly found himself at the centre of the simmering hostility between two neighbouring nations. By the time they reached the area that had been threatened by the Indian pilots, the Jaguars had gone. Later, when Squadron Leader Russell Peart spoke of the incident to the British High Commissioner, he was told not to shoot down any Jaguars as the Indians had still not paid for them!
Russell Peart flew many other aircraft in his varied career, including the MiG 19, and while a test pilot at Boscombe Down trialled such designs as the Tornado GR1. But it was whilst he was seconded to the Sultan of Oman's Air Force, particularly during the so-called "Secret War" in Dhofar, that he saw the most action. In that theatre the author flew some 200 operational sorties, 180 of which involved live fire, during which he was hit many times. He was also hit and wounded by a 75mm shell.
Russ Peart has written in detail of his exciting RAF career, from flying Lightnings in the Far East to winning the top prize in the International Tactical Bombing Competition against a handpicked team of United States Air Force fighter pilots and being awarded the Sultan of Oman's Distinguished Service Medal. Supplemented by a selection of previously unseen photographs, this uniquely original memoir throws new light on the operational flying undertaken by some RAF pilots during the tense years of the Cold War.
Praise for From Lightnings to MiGs
"Absorbing and highly entertaining. . . . I have no hesitation in recommending From Lightnings to MiGs as an engrossing and enjoyable read for anyone with an interest in military aviation." ーRAF Historical Society
"There's some pretty jaw-dropping stuff in here." ーRowland White, author of Vulcan 607

Powder Keg【電子書籍】[ Oren Or Bittoun ]

It took 16 years of escaping his problems for Oren Or Bittoun, a former commander of the IDF's Border Police undercover counter-terrorism unit, to get a proper diagnosis of what he was suffering from. Bittoun was one of the first soldiers in the unit, taking part in dozens of classified operations in the West Bank during Israel’s First Intifada. During one operation, in 1992, he witnessed his unit’s commanding officer shot in the head by a Palestinian terrorist.

While Bittoun witnesses many harrowing events during his service, his commander’s death is the last straw. After a short debriefing by the army he goes home to commit suicide. He cocks his weapon, points it to his head and recites the Shema Yisrael prayer. The door opens and his mother grabs him screaming, the gun goes off, hitting the floor, and only then does he realize what has happened. He keeps his suicide attempt to himself.

After being released from the army Bittoun tries to escape the memories, living in the Congo, New York, Switzerland, London and Paris before finally returning to Israel with his wife and eldest son.
No matter where he goes, including the Swiss Alps, he carries a gun and a knife, sure that someone is out to kill him. He feels that his body is in Tel Aviv but his soul is in Jenin in the West Bank. He screams out his dead commander’s name in his sleep.
The turning point comes one night, 16 years after losing his commander, when Bittoun comes home from work and has a flashback to that tragic event.

He smells the same smells, the smoke and death, he feels someone grab his neck, he grabs the person back and when opening his eyes he sees that he is strangling his six-year-old daughter. She is turning blue. She screams in panic and asks him why he wants to kill her. Distraught, all he can say is that he loves her and will always protect her. That’s when his wife makes him seek professional help, otherwise she will leave him.

His novel, Powder Keg, is based on his true story which portrays a chilling mosaic of events that will leave readers with bated breath. The book opens a rare window, with a moving, intimate peek into his complex life and the inner workings of the mind and soul of someone suffering from combat related Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, also known as shell shock. Each night Oren fights a battle of survival against mortal fear, and each morning he chooses to live. From within this seemingly endless cycle of post-trauma, Oren paves the way and shows us a path forward. He stumbles and picks himself up, he fails and succeeds, he fights the powder keg within with everything he's got.

Guarded by Soviet-made tanks, riddled with deep fortifications, commanded by regiments of well-equipped elite enemy troops, the Plei Trap Valley was called the superhighway of the Ho Chi Minh Trail. So confident of its invulnerability to U.S. assault were the North Vietnamese that they housed a major POW camp beneath its jungle canopy. Acclaimed Special Forces chronicler Don Bendell tells his all-combat true story of the battle for Plei Trap in a blizzard of spent shell casings, with rockets screaming overhead and fog banks of enemy gas rolling in. Virtually unchecked even by B-52 carpet bombing, a swollen torrent of supplies and fresh troops poured out of the valley into the Communist war effort... until a strike force spearheaded by a Special Forces airborne assault team and their one hundred Montagnard strikers dropped deep behind NVA lines. Their mission: to keep retreating NVA from escaping into Cambodia and free American POWs from behind the barbed wire of the NVA camp... at any cost. They paid heavily for the right to call Plei Trap the... VALLEY OF TEARS.

At War with PTSD Battling Post Traumatic Stress Disorder with Virtual Reality【電子書籍】[ Robert N. McLay, MD PhD ]

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】At War with PTSD Battling Post Traumatic Stress Disorder with Virtual Reality【電子書籍】[ Robert N. McLay, MD PhD ]

The Spartans called it The Trembler; recent history has seen it termed shell shock, combat fatigue, soldier’s heart, and Vietnam Syndrome. Whatever the name, post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) has always been with us. With 20 percent of the Veterans of the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq exhibiting PTSD symptoms, the United States military has a strong interest in combating the condition. Navy psychiatrist Robert N. McLay has been at the forefront of these efforts. This is his story of using virtual reality to treat Service Members and Veterans with PTSD.

As a practicing psychiatrist who works with Veterans and civilians coping with PTSD, McLay had known for years before the September 11, 2001, attacks that effective treatments for the condition were elusive. When active duty called, he met the challenge, becoming the primary investigator on PTSD treatment projects that had Service Members face the ghosts of war in a computer simulator. After using this new form of exposure therapy on the home front, McLay and his team believed they had found a promising way to work with warriors broken by combat, so in 2008 they took it to the front line in Fallujah, Iraq, with the First Marine Expeditionary Force.

Several years into the project, McLay recounts openly and with bleak honesty the successes, failures, and limits of virtual reality treatment for PTSD. Filled with poignant firsthand accounts of war and its psychological aftermath, At War with PTSD explains the difficulties of using this specialized technology in the field and discusses such challenges as helping people who refuse to believe in PTSD, including those diagnosed with it. So far, the virtual reality program shows more promise than traditional therapies. And although McLay remains unsure why or how, his experiences hold out hope for those suffering from this devastating disorder.

In "Shell-Shock and Other Neuropsychiatric Problems," Elmer Ernest Southard presents a pioneering exploration of the psychological consequences of warfare, emphasizing the emerging understanding of shell shock, now recognized as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Through a meticulous examination of neuropsychiatric conditions prevalent during World War I, Southard employs a clinical yet empathetic literary style, weaving case studies and empirical research with nuanced analysis. His work sits at the intersection of psychology and military history, reflecting the early 20th-century shift toward recognizing mental health as a critical component of soldier welfare amid the horrors of modern combat. Elmer Ernest Southard, a prominent neurologist and psychiatrist of his time, was deeply influenced by the societal upheavals and medical advancements following the Great War. His experiences in treating soldiers suffering from psychological trauma shaped his commitment to understanding the complexities of the human mind under duress. Southard's profound insights into neuropsychiatry were fueled by both his academic background and firsthand observations, positioning him as a forerunner in advocating for a compassionate approach to mental health. This book is a vital contribution to both psychological literature and historical scholarship, highly recommended for mental health professionals, historians, and readers interested in the psychological implications of warfare. The War Prose【電子書籍】[ Ford Madox Ford ]

Ford Madox Ford's post-war masterpiece, Parade's End, is recognized as one of the great British novels about the First World War. This selection from his other extensive writings about the war, published and unpublished, sheds light on the tetralogy. It includes reminiscences, an unfinished novel, stories, and excerpts from letters. Ford was in his forties when he enlisted: this made him one of the few writers of his maturity to fight on the Western Front. His experience of combat was limited, but he was in the Battle of the Somme, was often under bombardment, and suffered from shell-shock. His largely psychological response to the war anticipates the recent renewal of interest in trauma and shell-shock. This book provides important testimony by one of the best writers of his generation.

Verdun The Longest Battle of the Great War【電子書籍】[ Paul Jankowski ]

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】Verdun The Longest Battle of the Great War【電子書籍】[ Paul Jankowski ]

At seven o'clock in the morning on February 21, 1916, the ground in northern France began to shake. For the next ten hours, twelve hundred German guns showered shells on a salient in French lines. The massive weight of explosives collapsed dugouts, obliterated trenches, severed communication wires, and drove men mad. As the barrage lifted, German troops moved forward, darting from shell crater to shell crater. The battle of Verdun had begun. In Verdun, historian Paul Jankowski provides the definitive account of the iconic battle of World War I. A leading expert on the French past, Jankowski combines the best of traditional military history-its emphasis on leaders, plans, technology, and the contingency of combat-with the newer social and cultural approach, stressing the soldier's experience, the institutional structures of the military, and the impact of war on national memory. Unusually, this book draws on deep research in French and German archives; this mastery of sources in both languages gives Verdun unprecedented authority and scope. In many ways, Jankowski writes, the battle represents a conundrum. It has an almost unique status among the battles of the Great War; and yet, he argues, it was not decisive, sparked no political changes, and was not even the bloodiest episode of the conflict. It is said that Verdun made France, he writes; but the question should be, What did France make of Verdun? Over time, it proved to be the last great victory of French arms, standing on their own. And, for France and Germany, the battle would symbolize the terror of industrialized warfare, "a technocratic Moloch devouring its children," where no advance or retreat was possible, yet national resources poured in ceaselessly, perpetuating slaughter indefinitely.

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】We Were Going to Win, Or Die There With the Marines at Guadalcanal, Tarawa, and Saipan【電子書籍】[ Roy H. Elrod ]

In 1940, native West Texan Roy H. Elrod joined the Marine Corps. A few years later his unit, the 8th Marine Regiment, went into the fight at Guadalcanal, where he commanded a platoon of 37 mm gunners. They endured Japanese attacks, malarial tropical weather, and starvation rations. His combat leadership earned him a Silver Star and a battlefield promotion. On D-Day at Tarawa his platoon waded their 37 mm cannons ashore, each weighing nearly 1,000 pounds, through half a mile of bullet-laced surf to get to an island where the killing never stopped. His was the only platoon to get its guns ashore and into action that first day. At Saipan, Elrod commanded a platoon of 75 mm halftracks, but he was riddled with shrapnel from an enemy artillery shell that took him out of the war. Fred H. Allison interviewed Elrod, drew upon wartime letters home, and provided annotations to the narrative of this young Marine infantry officer, a job that had an extremely low survival potential.
