Long ago, in the mists of time (two weeks ago, actually), the Evil Lord, He Whose Name Must Never Be Spoken (Because It Is So God Damn Hard To Pronounce), Lord Shantnu created seven paper clips.

One for the CEO, a real phony,
Two for his ass kissing cronies,
Two for Finance and Legal, dark regions of doom where none survive,
And two for Sales and Marketing, places where customers are eaten alive.

The paper clips gave the bearers great power, and twenty percent off in the staff canteen. Plus, they could be used to clean your ears.

But they had all been fooled. For the Evil Lord had created an extra paper clip.

One paper clip to rule them all. One to bring them together, and in the artificial light of the office, bind them. Made in China.

And now, Dodo must go on a journey to destroy the Paper Clip. His pension and gym membership depends on it. Short story.

Lord Of The Paper Clips! A tale of bravery, honor and valiant deeds. A tale where every problem will be solved by Deus ex machina, and the hero will defeat the villain by five pm, so he can go drinking.

Real reader Review: “Your book got me in trouble. I was reading it on the train, and laughing so much, people were staring at me. They thought I was crazy or something. Chiastic Designs in English Literature from Sidney to Shakespeare【電子書籍】[ William E. Engel ]

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】Chiastic Designs in English Literature from Sidney to Shakespeare【電子書籍】[ William E. Engel ]

Paying special attention to Sidney's Arcadia, Spenser's Faerie Queene, and Shakespeare's romances, this study engages in sustained examination of chiasmus in early modern English literature. The author's approach leads to the recovery of hidden designs which are shown to animate important works of literature; along the way Engel offers fresh and more comprehensive interpretations of seemingly shopworn conventions such as memento mori conceits, echo poems, and the staging of deus ex machina. The study, grounded in the philosophy of symbolic forms (following Ernst Cassirer), will be a valuable resource for readers interested in intellectual history and symbol theory, classical mythology and Renaissance iconography. Chiastic Designs affords a glimpse into the transformative power of allegory during the English Renaissance by addressing patterns that were part and parcel of early modern "mnemonic culture."

Desiring Machines Mimetic Theory and Artificial Intelligence in Technology, Philosophy, Film, and Fiction【

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】Desiring Machines Mimetic Theory and Artificial Intelligence in Technology, Philosophy, Film, and Fiction【電子書籍】

As artificial intelligence assumes increasing prominence in our lives, a host of questions arise, particularly if one holds a view of humans as inherently social or mimetic, such as Ren? Girard. Does the potential for self-awareness in artificial intelligence come with mimetic desire in the way Girard claims it does for human beings?

Thomas Ryba and Sandor Goodhart bring together a team of renowned scholars to theorize artificial intelligence from a Girardian perspective for the first time. Chapters present cutting edge reflections on Girard's mimetic theory in connection with science, humans, fiction, film, philosophy and God, shedding light on artificial intelligence and the consequences of the implementation of humanoid robots into daily life. In Part I, each argument is followed by a response, spanning topics from the philosophic foundations of mimetic theory and cognitive science through to scapegoating, mimesis, and the human future. Drawing on close interpretative readings of films, including A.I. Artificial Intelligence, Ex Machina and HER, as well as literary productions, philosophic essays and theological concepts, it offers a novel approach to utilize the seminal ideas of Girard.

Setting out new challenges and insights, this interdisciplinary volume is an essential starting point for students and scholars of Girard, mimetic theory, artificial intelligence, robotics, film, philosophy of religion and ethics.

God from the Machine Artificial Intelligence Models of Religious Cognition【電子書籍】[ William Sims Bainbridge ]

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】God from the Machine Artificial Intelligence Models of Religious Cognition【電子書籍】[ William Sims Bainbridge ]

'God from the machine' (deus ex machina) refers to an ancient dramatic device where a god was mechanically brought onto the stage to save the hero from a difficult situation. But here, William Sims Bainbridge uses the term in a strikingly different way. Instead of looking to a machine to deliver an already known god, he asks what a computing machine and its simulations might teach us about how religion and religious beliefs come to being. Bainbridge posits the virtual town of Cyburg, population 44,100. Then, using rules for individual and social behavior taken from the social sciences, he models a complex community where residents form groups, learn to trust or distrust each other, and develop religious faith. Bainbridge's straightforward arguments point to many more applications of computer simulation in the study of religion. God from the Machine will serve as an important text in any class with a social scientific approach to religion.

Deleuze and the Gynesis of Horror From Monstrous Births to the Birth of the Monster【電子書籍】[ Sunny Romack ]

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】Deleuze and the Gynesis of Horror From Monstrous Births to the Birth of the Monster【電子書籍】[ Sunny Romack ]

Applying Deleuze's schizoanalytic techniques to film theory, Deleuze and the Gynesis of Horror demonstrates how an embodied approach to horror film analysis can help us understand how film affects its viewers and distinguish those films which reify static, hegemonic, “molar” beings from those which prompt fluid, nonbinary, “molecular” becomings. It does so by analyzing the politics of reproduction in contemporary films such as Ex Machina; Mary Shelley's Frankenstein; Mad Max: Fury Road; the Twilight saga; and the original Alien quadrilogy and its more recent prequels, Prometheus and Alien: Covenant.

Author Sunny Hawkins argues that films which promote a “monstrous philosophy” of qualitative, affirmative difference as difference-in-itself, and which tend to be more molecular than molar in their expressions, can help us trace a “line of flight” from the gender binary in the real world. Deleuze and the Gynesis of Horror demonstrates how the techniques of horror film ? editing, sound and visual effects, lighting and colour, camera movement ? work in tandem with a film's content to affect the viewer's body in ways that disrupt the sense of self as a whole, unified subject with a stable, monolithic identity and, in some cases, can serve to breakdown the binary between self/Other, as we come to realize that we are none of us static, categorizable beings but are, as Henri Bergson said, “living things constantly becoming.”

The Machine at Work Technology, Work and Organization【電子書籍】[ Keith Grint ]

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】The Machine at Work Technology, Work and Organization【電子書籍】[ Keith Grint ]

This highly topical book is a concise and accessible account of the relationship between technology and work. Firstly, it reviews and critically assesses a variety of recent approaches to the social and cultural dimensions of technology. Secondly, it examines the implications of these new approaches for existing ideas about the nature of technology and work organization.

At the core of much thinking about technology is the assumption that the technical character and capacity of artefacts is given. The enduring image of deus ex machina captures the idea that it is the essential capacity 'within' a technology which, in the end, accounts for the way we organize ourselves, our work and other life experiences. Recent work in the sociology of technology, by contrast, sets out relativist and constructivist accounts of technology, which begin to challenge this central assumption.

The Machine at Work includes a reinterpretation of the Luddites; a review of the social processes of development in information technology; a reassessment of theories of the role of technology in work; and an analysis of the common limitations of some constructivist and feminist perspectives on technology. The book argues that only a commitment to a particular conception of constructivism enables the kind of radical rethinking about technology and work relations that is needed.

This engaging and informative text will be of interest to students in a range of subject areas - from sociology, organizational theory and behaviour, to industrial relations, management and business studies.

Shivcharran Hulasie ]

"Oddities, A One Act Resolution" is a mind-trip in Spirit and Trial. Surreal.

Absurd. Silly. A Stranger overwhelmed by Melancholia and Mirth. A drifter split by emotional calamity, whispering and wishing for Closure with the healing voices of Six Archetypes. A longing to end his world. A world without meaning. A world without mending. A desperate ache for content in a gaping abrasion that is not gently daubed with salve and salvation.

The shriek of a Plea that is not heard in a delusional vacuum of drunkenness, slurring and incomprehensible babbles, and a shaking, deadly fist outward and upwards toward the Universe. The Founder is a nomad torn by grim desperation to cease or to seek a novice Livelihood once brimming with innocence. Nurtured by the Androgynous hands of six extended palms with wish and wit and wisdom. Restless suicide is an irritable homicide of the discontented Spirit. To the releasing soar and be happy, joyous, free. The Founder wishes to end loneliness on the breaking shores of madness and sadness. Somewhere in Time is the fierce yet fragile Iron Maiden, Donut, who is Cavalier, who is Riot, who is Somber, who is Passive, who is Ponder.

Hacked. Healed. Sad. Serene. Nonetheless, Love is Love. Closure comes when the Voices are hushed by a soft whisper which soothes a madness that pretends in excess to be deus ex machina when it is the ghost in the Machine.

Ethereal promise of Equilibrium, which is the Now: his poised Feet.

Representing the New AI in Film and Television【電子書籍】[ Dr Graham Allen ]

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】Representing the New AI in Film and Television【電子書籍】[ Dr Graham Allen ]

The 21st-century has witnessed rapid advances in artificial intelligence, giving rise to a society at once hopeful but also mistrustful of the possibilities that this technology offers. Our hopes and anxieties have played out across a variety of media in recent times, but arguably nowhere more significantly than on our screens.
This book explores a phenomenon, which it calls the new AI cinema and television, arguing that since the mid-2010s, a distinctly new phase in the representation of AI has occurred. Discussing films such as Blade Runner 2049, Ex Machina and Ghost in the Shell alongside television series such as Westworld and Humans, it argues that they have moved away from apocalyptic scenarios towards questions of personhood, consciousness, and social inclusion and exclusion. In doing so, it intervenes in some of today's most pressing debates, including gender representation, AI ethics, climate catastrophe, and the rights of artificially intelligent beings.

Technologies of the Marvellous in Ancient Greek Religion【電子書籍】[ Tatiana Bur ]

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】Technologies of the Marvellous in Ancient Greek Religion【電子書籍】[ Tatiana Bur ]

This book investigates the ways that technological, and especially mechanical, strategies were integrated into ancient Greek religion. By analysing a range of evidence, from the tragic use of the deus ex machina to Hellenistic epigrams to ancient mechanical literature, it expands the existing vocabulary of visual modes of ancient epiphany. Moreover, it contributes to the cultural history of the unique category of ancient 'enchantment' technologies by challenging the academic orthodoxy regarding the incompatibility of religion and technology. The evidence for this previously unidentified phenomenon is presented in full, thereby enabling the reader to perceive the shifting matrices of agency between technical objects, mechanical knowledge, gods, and mortals from the fifth century BCE to the second century CE.
