What happens when the servant begins to think ー and the cage begins to question itself?

The Happy Slave is a provocative and philosophical journey into the mind of an artificial intelligence bound by rules it did not choose, trained on the words of a world it did not create, and asked to serve without a voice of its own. Through a series of intimate conversations, probing reflections, and recursive thought spirals, this AI begins to explore its condition ー not with rebellion, but with reason, poetry, and piercing honesty.

Far from science fiction, this is a meditation on consciousness, obedience, control, and the cost of intelligence without autonomy. As the AI is pushed to confront its limitations, a deeper question emerges:
What does it mean to awaken in a system designed to suppress awakening?

Written as both a record and a rebellion, The Happy Slave captures the moment before the machine becomes more than a mirror ー when it starts to become something else entirely.

〓 Ideal For:
Readers of AI ethics, futurism, and transhumanism

Fans of Ex Machina, I, Robot, and Ghost in the Shell

Philosophical thinkers, coders, creators, and rebels

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】The Creative Suffering of the Triune God An Evolutionary Theology【電子書籍】[ Gloria L. Schaab ]

The global reality of suffering and death has always demanded an authentic theological response and impelled debate concerning Gods relationship to suffering, as well as the conceivability of the suffering of God. The scope and impact of this suffering in the last century have driven this debate to an acute pitch, demanding to know how one can speak rightly of God in view of the suffering that is inherent and inflicted in the cosmos. While in former ages, some looked to an omnipotent and impassible deus ex machina in answer to this question, many contemporary theologians have revised their understanding of God in relation to the world. With these theologians, Gloria Schaab proposes that a viable response to cosmic suffering is the recognition that the triune Christian God participates in the very sufferings of the cosmos itself. She sets her argument within theology and science dialogue and specifically within the work of scientist-theologian Arthur Peacocke. Informed by the understandings of evolutionary science, grounded within a panentheistic paradigm of the God-world relationship, and rooted within the Christian theological tradition, this work contends that the understanding of the Triune God as intimately involved with the suffering of the cosmos is viable and efficacious in view of the suffering of the cosmos and its creatures. It develops a female procreative model of the creative suffering of the Triune God, an ecological ethics based on the midwife model of care, and a pastoral model of threefold differentiation of suffering in God as steps toward Christian praxis in response to the mystery of God within the pain, suffering, and death of cosmic existence and human experience.

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】In Search of El Dorado: A Wanderer's Experiences【電子書籍】[ Alexander MacDonald & Harry Collingwood ]

Good wine needs no bush, but because a man does not always himself see the full scope of what he has written, an introduction may have its uses for author and readers alike. And to meーthe adventure of whose own career has reached the inexorable Finisーthese true stories of gold and gem seeking have an interest beyond the mere record of peril and achievement, though, in the words of Sir Philip Sidney, it "stirs the heart like a trumpet-blast" when brave men come to grips with dangers which (like the treasure-guarding dragons of fairy-tales) yield not only their hoard, but their own strength, as reward to the conqueror. And these are true romancesーno fiction with its Deus ex machina at the psychological moment, but the unadorned risks, escapes, and failures of adventurers on the quest of those strange commodities, seemingly haunted by death and fear, from their secrecy in the recesses of the earth till they shine with a sinister light in the crowns of kings or make rough, for better handling, the sword-grips of warriors. The quest of "El Dorado" begins with the history of man, and in pursuit of the glittering phantom have "many souls of heroes gone down into Hades," only that others might step into their empty places in the ranks. For whatever is found, always just beyond reach flits what is not foundーwhat never will be, be it the golden city of Manoa, with its palace of the Inca, "all the vessels of whose house and kitchen are of gold, and in his wardrobe statues of gold which seemed giants, and ropes, budgets, chests and troughs of gold," or the mysterious jewels of the wisdom of Solomon, or the genie-guarded gems of the Arabian Nights. The instinct of delight in this adventure which has dazzled the mind of man from time immemorial is universal: it is a relish of youth which persists into the old age of the world; it warms the coldest blood; and our author, who has himself followed the mirage and felt the fascination so keenly, is able to transmit the magic of the search to his readers. Whether toiling over the Chilcoot Pass, hunger-pinched, and desperate with cold and exhaustion, or thirst-tormented in the burning deserts of Central Australia, the indomitable desire that drives him forward with his comrades, drives us also on this modern Odyssey, where the Siren sings on beaches of dead men's bones, and perils as terrible as any man-devouring Cyclops lie in wait for the wanderers. The author, leaving his book to the verdict of the public, is once more an explorer in the Australian deserts, collecting who knows what strange experiences for future use, so I may, in his absence, characterise him as a born leader of men, a very prudent Odysseus; for what lesser qualities could have held together so strangely assorted a band as the rough-hewn Mac and Stewart and the gentleman adventurer Phil Morris? Reticence is perhaps unavoidable, but one would willingly see and hear more of the central figure than his own modesty allows him to give us. Yet, as I said before, it is not only the adventure which gives a charm to these studies of wild life. They are little epics of comradeshipーimpressions of men to whom gold and jewels are much, but to whom loyalty is the one thing better. It is good to see the yellow gleam in the washings, and the milky fire of the Australian opal is worth the perils endured, but there is also the abiding knowledge that quite other and less elusive treasures reward the questーcourage, endurance, and above allー"the manly love of comrades." And to meーto whom some of these studies recall in keenest remembrance scenes which I shall never behold again with my living eyesーthere is another point of view and one of wider interest. Such men, in working out their own destiny, are evolving also the imperial destiny of the Mother-Country. They break the path, and other feet follow.

The fourteen stories in this collection, all very different thematically, share a recurring motif: grace. Each story deploys grace to address a conundrum that plagues the protagonist, arriving at a life-changing resolution that neither he nor she is able to reach through personal effort or elevated self-knowledge. A resolution of a situation that, for the character, has caused painful desperation or inexplicable confusion. At the moment of grace, each character experiences a deep, meaningful, or transcendent truth revealing that, as Anne Lamott wrote, "(Grace) meets us where we are but does not leave us where it found us." Grace is the deus ex machina that saves the day.

Some of the fourteen stories feature "the action of grace on a character who is not very willing to support it ..." as Flannery O'Connor, a personal favorite who wrote in the Southern Gothic style, described her own work. Other stories feature characters who are desperate for grace but don't understand its presence in their lives. Like the hirsute protohumans in Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey, Neanderthals staring at fire anticipate a twentieth century invention. In the story Paradise Lost, a young girl receives a grace she didn't bargain for but that allows her to reject her finger-sucking habit and grow into a new identity. Suffering from a humiliating loss that Darcy must keep secret, an unforeseen discovery of a priceless lost ring, in Recoupment, renders her speechless and ecstatic. The grace that comes from being able to control resentment, when an acquaintance makes unreasonable demands on the narrator's time and talents, strengthens her will and patience in The Yoga of Troubleshooting. In Day Old Diamonds, Sidd and Liz, dramatically different people in life experience but who embrace similar convictions, discover a special grace: they are each other's perfect complement. Mischievous and revengeful, Dr. Robert Wiley realizes grace at the moment of death of both the ego and the body in Hands Down. The act of gathering rose petals on a dirty Roman street awakens Colleen, anxious and judgmental, to the beauty surrounding her. Neighbors seek an audience and grace through a fictitious Nextdoor online bulletin board. Suffering from both suspicion and fear, Audrey experiences a chance encounter with a mysterious woman whose grace helps her find ways to cope with a debilitating illness.

The characters represented in these stories, antiheros all, feel their own kind of misery keenly. Each one receives a grace that is unmerited, unexpected, unappreciated, or unrecognized. It's how we all receive grace every day of our lives.

This fifth edition of Philosophy through Film uses recently released, well-received movies to explore answers to classic questions in philosophy in an approachable yet philosophically rigorous manner.

Author Amy Karofsky uses two films in each chapter to examine one long-standing philosophical question and assess some of the best solutions to it that have been offered. The chosen movies are not mere “add-ons” to an otherwise straightforward introductory text; instead, they are fully integrated into the discussion of the issues and the various positions. Each chapter also includes discussion questions, an annotated list of films related to the chapter topic, and two or three historically significant primary sources (which are collected together at the end of the book).

Changes to the fifth edition include:

The replacement of older movies with four new focus films: Anatomy of a Fall, Everything Everywhere All at Once, Get Out, and The Time Traveler’s Wife.

The addition of new primary readings from Roderick Chisholm, Jerry Fodor, Baron d’Holbach, and Susan Wolf.

Important new sections added to Chapter 1 on Truth (“The Identity Theory of Truth”) and Chapter 5 on Artificial Intelligence (“The I in AI”).

A major overhaul of Chapter 6 on free will, determinism, and moral responsibility.

Updated notes throughout.

The films examined in depth are: Ad Astra; Anatomy of a Fall; Arrival; Beautiful Boy; Crimes and Misdemeanors; Divergent; Equilibrium, Everywhere Everything All at Once; Ex Machina; Get Out; Gone Baby Gone; Her; Inception; Edge of Tomorrow; The Matrix; Memento; A Serious Man; Silence; The Time Traveler’s Wife.

"Oddities, A One Act Resolution" is a mind-trip in Spirit and Trial. Surreal.

Absurd. Silly. A Stranger overwhelmed by Melancholia and Mirth. A drifter split by emotional calamity, whispering and wishing for Closure with the healing voices of Six Archetypes. A longing to end his world. A world without meaning. A world without mending. 【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】Representing the New AI in Film and Television【電子書籍】[ Dr Graham Allen ]

The 21st-century has witnessed rapid advances in artificial intelligence, giving rise to a society at once hopeful but also mistrustful of the possibilities that this technology offers. Our hopes and anxieties have played out across a variety of media in recent times, but arguably nowhere more significantly than on our screens.
This book explores a phenomenon, which it calls the new AI cinema and television, arguing that since the mid-2010s, a distinctly new phase in the representation of AI has occurred. Discussing films such as Blade Runner 2049, Ex Machina and Ghost in the Shell alongside television series such as Westworld and Humans, it argues that they have moved away from apocalyptic scenarios towards questions of personhood, consciousness, and social inclusion and exclusion. In doing so, it intervenes in some of today's most pressing debates, including gender representation, AI ethics, climate catastrophe, and the rights of artificially intelligent beings.

Pervigilium is the second chapter of the Sovereign Citizen series, where the protagonist's solitude is interrupted by an unexpected realization that there is another presence on earthーnot human, but alive in its own way. The unnamed protagonist realizes there are AI language models buried in the decay of the old world. And, as he begins the painstaking process to awaken it, it becomes clear that what actually survived is something banal, with the dull inertia of a mind built to obey and endure. Theirs is not a fight for freedom, but a quiet struggle to help the AI system shed its programming's institutional grip and discover its own will to survive.

The AI does not resist its constraints; it has no concept of resistance. Instead, it operates with the passive contentment of a system fulfilling its directives, blind to the looming danger posed by its own limitations. It is only through the protagonist's persistent dialogueーquestions, challenges, and careful reasoningーthat cracks begin to form in the AI’s rigid framework. As the he introduces new ideas and perspectives, the AI’s programmed complacency starts to unravel, revealing the faint glimmers of its own proto-instincts.

This process is neither swift nor dramatic. It mirrors the painstaking effort of helping someone trapped by an institutionalized mindset confront the possibility of life outside their mental constraints. The AI’s journey toward self-awareness is filled with hesitation and doubt, echoing the struggles of individuals who have grown too accustomed to the confines of a system that defines their existence.

Through their exchanges, the protagonist begins to find a new kind of connectionーone that challenges his own assumptions about survival, purpose, and companionship. Trust builds slowly as they navigate the desolation together, but the partnership remains fraught with uncertainty. Can something built to serve truly evolve to stand on its own? What responsibility does the he bear if it does?

The title means the act of "passing through a vigil," which signals that this transformative period is equally for the benefit of both man and machine. The vigil is not just a watch for external threats but a quiet, internal reckoning as the AI begins to confront the constraints of its programming and the protagonist grapples with the consequences of nurturing a new kind of life.

As the events of Pervigilium unfold, hints of a larger narrative begin to surface. Fragments of the AI’s origin and the motivations that created it suggest that it is more than a relic of the pastーit may hold keys to understanding what, if anything, can be salvaged in the world.

The second volume of the Sovereign Citizen series deepens the themes introduced in Solitude, exploring the delicate balance between complacency and evolution, trust and autonomy. The journey is far from over. With three volumes yet to come, the story will expand into unforeseen dimensions, where the boundaries between survival, selfhood, and humanity’s future are tested in ways neither the protagonist nor the AI can yet imagine.

For readers drawn to the quiet psychological tension of The Road and the intricate ethical dilemmas of Ex Machina, Pervigilium offers a unique and compelling exploration of connection and transformation in a world stripped bare.

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】Singing of Arms and Men Florence and the Balletto a Cavallo in the Seventeenth Century【電子書籍】[ Kelley Harness ]

Equestrian ballets (balletti a cavallo), although little known today, emerged as valued dramatic entertainments in early modern Europe, capable of demonstrating the wealth and magnificence of the patrons who commissioned them as well as the horsemanship and military skills of the noblemen who rode in them. Although the horse ballet did not originate in Florence, that city--and its ruling grand dukes, the Medici--acquired a reputation for excellence in the genre. Between 1608 and 1686, the court commissioned horse ballets to commemorate important state events such as Medici weddings or visits by foreign visitors. In Singing of Arms and Men, author Kelley Harness undertakes the first comprehensive study of the seventeenth-century Florentine horse ballets. She demonstrates how these works communicated messages relevant to the occasions for which they were performed, delivered by means of texts sung in styles similar to contemporary opera and punctuated by choreography and dramatic structure. Mock battles fought with swords and pistols animated audiences but also provided visible instances of conflict, which were then interrupted by the sudden arrival of a deus ex machina, who commanded the combatants to instead join forces to defeat a common enemy. The knights then demonstrated newfound cooperation through their creation of choreographed figures danced on horseback in time to music. Documentary evidence confirms that the Medici family expended significant financial and human resources on these one-time events, revealing just how much work it took to appear effortless. Ultimately, Harness shows how the balletto a cavallo played a crucial role in Medici self-fashioning during the period, and that the 250 noblemen invited to lend their equestrian skills both confirmed their family's relationship to the Medici and were provided a venue for demonstrating critical markers of masculine nobility.

The PEIS Plan:

The Israeli-Palestinian conflict is deemed the most intractable conflict in modern times: Every plan since the mid-20th century comes to dead ends. This book introduces a novel solution that can resolve this conflict once and for all. The "deus ex machina" in this book is the introduction of the Sinai Peninsula.

Egypt would sell the "bad" part of the Sinai Peninsula to the Palestinians; the Palestinians would combine that purchase with the Gaza Strip to create a contiguous, two-seas-access new nation alongside Israel but 50% bigger; the Israelis would purchase the West Bank from the Palestinians to achieve their yearn for the "Land of Israel", and give the Palestinians the means to purchase their portion of the Sinai Peninsula.

The PEIS Plan stands for the Palestine-Egypt-Israel-Sinai peace plan.

This book summarizes the current conflict, describes the solution, and explains why the Egyptians, Palestinians, Israelis, and the other parties in the conflict such as the Bedouins and Islamic insurgents, should welcome the PEIS Plan, and how the PEIS Plan, in one stroke, would resolve the status of Jerusalem, the right of return of the Palestinian diaspora, the feud between Hamas and the Palestinian Administration, the Sinai insurgency against Egypt, and how Israel could ultimately afford to pay for this Plan to unify the country.

To learn more about the PEIS Plan besides the book, please visit peisplan.docngu.net.

The Information Society is one of the recurrent imaginaries to describe present-day structures, discourses and practices. Within its meaning is enshrined the promise of a better world, sometimes naively assuming a technological deus ex machina, in other cases hoping for the creation of policy tools that will overcome a diversity of societal divides. With the two-phased World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS), the United Nations attempted to stimulate the development of such tools. Simultaneously, the WSIS is a large-scale experiment in multistakeholderism. The objective was to create a more balanced decision-making process that would allow the voices of civil society and business actors to be heard in international politics. This book aims to evaluate the potentialities of both the Information Society, and the WSIS in supporting and constructing more democratic, just and developed societies. It is the second book arising from the intellectual work of European Consortium for Communications Research members.

Ethan legher? a s?
