＜p＞In April 1916, the creation of the American escadrille was decided.＜/p＞ ＜p＞During the next twenty-one months this aviation squadron was to be seen over every important battlefield, with its men fighting and dying for France.＜/p＞ ＜p＞George Thenault’s fascinating history of the Lafayette Escadrille covers from its very inception to the end of the war.＜/p＞ ＜p＞Many Americans living in France at the outbreak of war in 1914 wanted to fight for the country that they saw as the founder of Liberty, and some of those men were pilots.＜/p＞ ＜p＞But with the French army only having 80 planes the Americans were initially rejected from joining the air force and instead had to sign up with the Foreign Legion.＜/p＞ ＜p＞It was only after months of persuasion that some of these intrepid Americans were given control of France’s planes and later, under Thenault’s command, they developed their own squadron.＜/p＞ ＜p＞They were immediately thrown into the thick of the fighting above the pockmarked land of the Western Front.＜/p＞ ＜p＞Thenault provides vivid descriptions of his brave pilots which included Norman Prince, the Rockwell brothers and the ace Raoul Lufbery.＜/p＞ ＜p＞Some of these pilots were rather eccentric, for example William Thaw who when in Paris bought two lions, named Whiskey and Soda, which became the escadrille’s mascots.＜/p＞ ＜p＞Flying their Nieuports, they were fighting at the very beginning of military aviation and were instrumental in pioneering new battle techniques.＜/p＞ ＜p＞Their life expectancy was not long and many who had joined at the inception of the escadrille did not make it through until the end of the war.＜/p＞ ＜p＞Thenault’s extremely personal account covers all aspects of this squadron in World War One, from their activities on the ground to their dogfights in the air. It is a truly remarkable read.＜/p＞ ＜p＞Eventually with the United States joining the war the Lafayette Escadrille was disbanded and a number of its members were inducted into the U.S. Air Service as members of 103 Aero Squadron.＜/p＞ ＜p＞George Thenault’s The Story of the Lafayette Escadrille was published in 1921. His book gained widespread American public recognition. In May 1922, he accepted an assignment that began an eleven year diplomatic service in the Embassy of France in Washington, D.C.. Promoted to Lieutenant Colonel in 1933 following successful completion of duties as Military Attache for Aeronautics at the French Embassy in Washington DC, he returned to France and continued his military services with the French Air Army. Worrell's teams rekindled passion widely for a game that had become stodgy in the late 1950s. Though less flamboyant, Joe was the even-tempered stabiliser in a team of gifted, if mercurial, stroke-makers. In December 1960, Solomon executed two run outs, direct hits when Australia was on the verge of victory, that were instrumental in effecting the first Tied Test in the history of cricket. The style and sportsmanship of Worrell's team, in 1960-1, so captivated the Australian imagination that over 300,000 poured into the streets of Melbourne, on 17 February 1961, to say farewell to the West Indians. Joe Solomon will be remembered eternally for that Tied Test in Brisbane in December 1960; but, as Ian McDonald reminds us, 'over and over again, Joe walked to the wicket with everyone in the nation depending on him to save the day'. It has been considered that, as a result of the role of Latin American countries as providers of raw materials produced in enclaves dominated by foreign capital, their participation in the world economy has had adverse consequences for their long-term development. This volume addresses a representative sample of countries with varied initial conditions and resource endowments, a diverse productive specialization, as well as different degrees of integration to the world economy. ＜p＞The Mayors Court is Louisianas most numerous type of court, with about 250 of these courts across the state, yet very little appears to be known about them. Out of the fifty states, only Louisiana and Ohio still use these courts. Under this system of informal tribunals, a town mayor essentially acts as prosecutor, judge, and jury to enforce municipal ordinances. There is no requirement that a mayor presiding over one of these courts should possess a law degree or have any legal training. Likewise, the inherent duty of mayors to raise revenue creates a potential bias that could cause mayors to convict defendants solely for financial gain. Although their existence is vested under the Louisiana Constitution, there is very limited statutory guidance or procedural safeguards to govern these courts. Many of the few attempts that have been made to interpret laws governing these courts have been misguided and have lead to incorrect court decisions. As a result, the possibility exists for defendants before these courts to be unfairly convicted.
