Incandescent poems about living and agingーabout being awake in this young centuryーby one of our most moving and eloquent poets.

These poems chart the journeys of sleepless nights when whole lifetimes seem to pass with their stories: loves lost and gained; children and seasons in their phases; and the world beyond, both threatening and enriching life. The time before sleep acts as an invitation to reflect on the world's quieter movementsーfrom gardens heavy after a first storm to the moon slipping into darkness in an eclipseーas well as on the subtle but relentless passage of time. Insomnia embodies Linda Pastan's graceful and iconic voice, both lucid and haunting.

From the award-winning author of The Bird Catcher, this life-spanning volume offers the delight of both discovery and re-discovery, as Ponsot tends the unruly garden of her mind with her customary care and passion. The book opens with a group of new poems, including “What Would You Like to Be When You Grow Up?”ーa question that has kept Ponsot’s work vital for more than five decades. Throughout the selections from her four earlier books and a trove of previously unpublished work covering the years 1946 to 1971, she offers us a “lost haven in a springing world.” Sometimes sharp in her self-perception, but always listing toward pleasure and elegance, unafraid of grief and the passage of time, Ponsot continually refreshes her language and the spirited self from which it emerges.

Table of Contents: The Sonnets Venus And Adonis The Rape Of Lucrece The Passionate Pilgrim The Phoenix And The Turtle A Lover's Complaint Shakespeare's sonnets are a collection of 154 sonnets, dealing with themes such as the passage of time, love, beauty and mortality, first published in a 1609 quarto entitled Shakespeares Sonnets. Venus and Adonis is a poem written in 1592?1593 and published in 1609. It recounts Venus' attempts to woo Adonis, their passionate coupling, and Adonis' rejection of the goddess, to which she responds with jealousy, with tragic results. The Rape of Lucrece, published in 1594, is a narrative poem focusing on the rape and tragic death of the title character and on the revenge that follows. The Passionate Pilgrim, published in 1599, is an anthology of 20 poems collected and published by William Jaggard that were attributed to "W. The Phoenix and the Turtle, first published in 1601, is an allegorical poem about the death of ideal love, widely considered to be one of his most obscure works and has led to many conflicting interpretations. The poem describes a funeral arranged for the deceased Phoenix and Turtledove, the latter a traditional emblem of devoted love. A Lover's Complaint is a narrative poem published as an appendix to the original edition of Shakespeare's sonnets. It is given the title "A Lover's Complaint" in the book, which was published in 1609.
The plot unfolds as Iphigenia encounters her long-lost brother, Orestes, who arrives in Tauris with his friend Pylades. Orestes has been commanded by Apollo to retrieve a sacred statue of Artemis to atone for the murder of his mother, Clytemnestra. Unaware of each other's identities, Iphigenia is initially tasked with preparing Orestes for sacrifice, as the custom in Tauris mandates that foreigners be offered to Artemis. Eventually, through a series of dramatic recognitions, the siblings realize each other’s identities. In a climactic turn, they devise a plan to escape with the statue and flee Tauris, outsmarting the local king, Thoas, with the aid of Athena, who intervenes to ensure their safe passage. This play is distinguished by its themes of family loyalty, forgiveness, and divine guidance, contrasting the usual tragic tones of Euripides' works. The play emphasizes the power of sibling bonds and explores the redemptive potential of human connection and divine mercy. "Iphigenia in Tauris" stands out as a narrative of survival and reunion, illustrating how, even amidst violence and chaos, compassion and cleverness can prevail. It has inspired many later works and adaptations, valued for its compelling characters, dramatic structure, and its exploration of fate and human agency in the context of myth.

The plot revolves around a man who, while visiting a hotel, stumbles upon an old guestbook or register that holds a connection to his past.

A dynamic and philosophical debut collection, Daniel Ruiz’s Reality Checkmate choreographs the endless wrestling match between lyrical sensibility and ontological principles taking place on the mind’s stage. These poems exquisitely demonstrate that phenomena in the material world are rarely as simple as they seem and yet must continually confront the universe’s countermoveーthe constraints of life itself, the knowledge that all we truly have is the present moment and the face value of our perceptions. He succinctly summarizes the history of art as cultural capitalー“all of us are / eternally punished with proving / literature is about literature after all”ーwhile revealing the redundancies and blind spots of intellectualismー“Meanwhile, a lost sheep / finds grass to eat anywhere it wants, / and does not mind, / like Lorca, letting its hair grow long.” While Reality Checkmate delights in the cerebral mode, its celebration of relativity as well as the lush materiality of language yields equal imagery and musicality, upholding sensory experience and human relationships as existentially significant in the absence of absolute truths. In Ruiz’s astonishing first book, dawn is not morningーor rather, not merely morning. “Madrugada” rejects a navel-gazing discourse on sentimentality and the passage of days, commanding that “you for whom meaning / is the meaning of beauty, be gone.” We could spend our whole lives ideating a metaphysics of time and waste the wonder of sunlight right in front of us. “Meanwhile, / the clouds are proud of all of us. It’s 12:01. / A man dragged by a poodle says / Good morning. Everyone in the orchestra / stands up at once.”

In Wonderland, she encounters a host of eccentric characters, including the grinning Cheshire Cat, the madcap Mad Hatter, and the tyrannical Queen of Hearts. Each episode challenges her perceptions and often defies logic, blending playful wordplay with surreal scenarios. As Alice navigates this dreamlike landscape, she grapples with questions of identity and maturity. The tale is a rich tapestry of fantasy, satire, and the absurdities of adult conventions viewed through a child's eyes.

Peter Pan by James Matthew Barrie
Wendy Darling and her brothers are whisked away from their London nursery by the mischievous Peter Pan to the enchanted Neverland. There, they encounter the Lost Boys, mermaids, and the nefarious Captain Hook and his band of pirates. Adventures abound, from battling pirates to exploring mysterious lagoons. While Neverland offers eternal youth and freedom, the Darlings grapple with feelings of homesickness and the allure of growing up. Peter, resistant to adulthood, embodies the joys and pitfalls of eternal childhood. The tale balances whimsy with deeper reflections on innocence, responsibility, and the passage of time.

The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde by Robert Louis Stevenson
Dr. Henry Jekyll, a respected scientist, grapples with the duality of human nature. Through experimental concoctions, he manages to separate his darker impulses, manifesting them as the malevolent Edward Hyde. Initially reveling in the freedom from moral constraints, Jekyll soon finds Hyde's actions spiraling out of control. The boundary between the two personas blurs, leading to catastrophic consequences. The narrative, told through the eyes of Jekyll's lawyer, Gabriel John Utterson, unravels the mystery behind the connection between Jekyll and Hyde. The novella explores themes of identity, morality, and the inherent dualism within humans.

A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens
Ebenezer Scrooge, a miserly and cold-hearted man, despises the festive cheer of Christmas. On Christmas Eve, he's visited by the ghost of his former partner, Jacob Marley, who warns him of impending doom if he doesn't change his ways. Subsequently, three spiritsーthe Ghosts of Christmas Past, Present, and Yet to Comeーguide Scrooge through visions of his own life, the hardships of those around him, and the grim future awaiting him. Confronted with the consequences of his indifference, Scrooge undergoes a profound transformation. The story emphasizes redemption, the spirit of giving, and the importance of compassion.

The Wonderful Wizard of Oz by Lyman Frank Baum
Dorothy Gale, a young girl from Kansas, is whisked away by a cyclone to the magical Land of Oz. Desperate to return home, she journeys to the Emerald City to seek the aid of the Wizard. Along the way, she befriends the Scarecrow seeking brains, the Tin Woodman desiring a heart, and the Cowardly Lion in search of courage. Together, they face various trials, from battling malevolent witches to navigating treacherous landscapes. Their quest becomes a journey of self-discovery, revealing that what they sought was within them all along. The story intertwines adventure with lessons on friendship, bravery, and self-belief.

The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, Complete by Mark Twain
Tom Sawyer, a mischievous and imaginative boy living along the Mississippi River, continually seeks adventure and escape from the mundanity of small-town life. From persuading friends to whitewash a fence to witnessing a graveyard murder with his friend Huck Finn, Tom's escapades are both lighthearted and perilous. His infatuation with Becky Thatcher leads to both romantic gestures and juvenile misunderstandings. The climax sees Tom and Becky lost in a cave, confronting real danger. Through Tom's eyes, the novel captures the spirit of childhood, the allure of freedom, and the moral lessons that come with growing up.

Frankenstein; Or, The Modern Prometheus by Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley
Victor Frankenstein, a passionate young scientist, becomes obsessed with unraveling the secrets of life and death. Through unorthodox experiments, he succeeds in animating a being crafted from reclaimed body parts. However, horrified by his creation's grotesque appearance, Victor abandons the creature, leading it to experience rejection and isolation. Yearning for companionship but met with fear and hostility, the creature's loneliness turns to vengeance against its creator. The ensuing cat-and-mouse chase delves deep into themes of ambition, responsibility, and the consequences of playing god. The novel serves as a cautionary tale about unchecked ambition and the ethical boundaries of science.

The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde
Dorian Gray, a young man of extraordinary beauty, becomes the muse of painter Basil Hallward. Influenced by the hedonistic Lord Henry Wotton, Dorian wishes that his portrait would bear the marks of age and sin, allowing him eternal youth. This wish mysteriously comes true, leading Dorian down a path of indulgence, moral corruption, and decadence, all while his visage remains untouched. Meanwhile, the portrait hidden away reflects the degradation of his soul. As years pass, the weight of his actions and the grotesque transformation of the painting haunt him. The narrative delves into themes of vanity, morality, and the duality of human nature.

A Study in Scarlet by Arthur Conan Doyle
Dr. John Watson, recently returned from the Afghan War, seeks lodging in London and is introduced to the enigmatic Sherlock Holmes. Soon, they are drawn into a perplexing murder case: a man found dead in an abandoned house with no apparent wounds, but with the word "RACHE" scrawled on the wall. As Holmes employs his deductive prowess, the narrative shifts to the American West, revealing a backstory of love, betrayal, and vengeance rooted in the Mormon community. The novel intricately weaves these disparate threads, culminating in the unmasking of the perpetrator. This debut of Holmes and Watson sets the stage for their enduring partnership.

Cranford by Elizabeth Cleghorn Gaskell
In the quaint English town of Cranford, the social fabric is predominantly woven by the genteel but modestly situated women. Through a series of vignettes, the novel portrays their daily lives, marked by tea parties, fashion, and the subtle etiquettes of Victorian society. The arrival of outsiders and unexpected events challenge their established norms, leading to both comedic and poignant moments. Amidst the simplicity, themes of resilience, compassion, and the strength of community emerge. The narrative offers a charming glimpse into the rhythms of small-town life and the enduring bonds of friendship.

Notes from the Underground by Fyodor Dostoyevsky
Presented as a confessional monologue, the narrative delves into the mind of an unnamed, introspective man living in St. Petersburg. Disillusioned with society and consumed by spite, he grapples with feelings of inferiority and existential angst. His musings challenge the notions of rationality, free will, and the human propensity for self-destruction. The second part recounts episodes from his past, highlighting his attempts to interact with others, which often culminate in humiliation and self-sabotage. Through this introspection, Dostoyevsky examines the complexities of the human psyche and the contradictions inherent in human nature.

Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare
Set in the city of Verona, two young lovers from feuding families, the Montagues and the Capulets, fall deeply in love at first sight. Defying their families' long-standing enmity, Romeo and Juliet secretly marry with the help of Friar Laurence. As tensions between their kin escalate, a series of tragic misunderstandings and hasty decisions ensue. Their clandestine love becomes a catalyst for both passion and tragedy. Ultimately, their story highlights the destructive nature of feuds and the purity of young love.

The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes by Arthur Conan Doyle
This collection features twelve intriguing cases tackled by the astute detective Sherlock Holmes and his loyal companion, Dr. John Watson. 【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】Mitiblende The Story of an American Family【電子書籍】[ Gene Hewett ]

Mitiblende reads like the story of a Black American family in its quest to sell or partition an heir's property legacy of 56 acres of undivided interest. The term Mitiblende (translation, make the brains grow smarter) was coined by Robert M. Pittman. The late Mr. Pittman was Joe Harris' uncle. Joe Harris is the novel's protagonist. The storyline is cast around property located in a small town rural Texas setting. Heirs property essentially represents generational wealth that has been transferred to multiple family members by inheritance, usually without a will. The deed to the property was dated August 2, 1898, from Sallie Simpson to Rosie Burse Edwards (Joe Harris' great-grandmother). The granting of the land was instead of monetary compensation and represented repayment for services rendered by Joe Harris' ancestors.

Historically, when a court ordered the partition of heirs' property by sale, the land was sold to the public. This typically happens by a mandatory sale at an auction. Often, property owners lost their family legacies and generally received a small percentage of what the land was worth - far below the property's fair market value. This has resulted in a tremendous amount of land loss among African Americans (disproportionately) and other people of color in the United States.

In many ways, the Mitiblende story can be characterized as semi-autobiographical. Several aspects of Joe Harris' childhood to adolescence to adulthood passage (such as names, places, and other identifying descriptors) may be fictional. However, many aspects of the journey, such as his efforts in structuring the Harris Family Tree, are factual and historical. Intertwined between the story is an evolving collage of clues presented in the form of letters, emails, teleconferences, and dialogue. For example, a letter written in 1986 by Joe Harris' Aunt Maude (the late Maudell Williams) provided clues that highlighted issues such as (a) the landlocked perimeter and (b) the lack of easement rights. In addition, Joe Harris' goal was to assist in charting a strategy to address a problem that had been lingering for decades. That problem was a tendency on the part of bordering neighbors to lay claim to the property via means such as adverse possession. When it came to implementing a course of action to address these issues Joe Harris soon found that not all clues had the same impact.

Birds are beloved for their song and have featured in our own music for centuries. Singing Like Larks opens a rare window onto birdlife, folklore, traditional verse, and song writing, especially in the British Isles.

In this charming volume, folklore, verse, and nature writing combine to explore why birds appear in so many folk songs, with song lyrics, history, and anecdotes drawing on a rich heritage. Ornithological folk songs are themselves something of a threatened species. Melodies lost in the passage of time, their lyrics tucked in archives, our awareness of birds, their song and our own traditions must be passed down from one generation to the next. Lifetimes of wisdom are etched into these songs, preserving the natural rhythms of times past and our connection to feathered friends.

A treasury of bird-related folk songs, this is also an account of one young nature writer’s journey into the world of folk music, and a joyous celebration of song, the seasons, and our love of birds.

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】Men on the Screen Re-visions of Masculinity in Spanish Cinema (1939-2019)【電子書籍】[ Jose Armengol ]

Cinema, whether it is understood as entertainment, business, criticism, or art, is always a reflection of the society in which it is born. Men on the Screen is a review of masculinity in cinema made in Spain by Spanish directors from 1939 to the present. The objective of this volume is, then, to observe the different types of masculinities, whose classification gives rise to a chronology that goes from the man who embodies the dream dreamt by the dictator Franco to the modern man, who is lost in his labyrinth, while also examining the repressed men, those men who have strayed and who live in the city, the rascals and braggarts, those who fight every day just to survive, the petty criminals, those men who divest themselves of the rancid national-Catholicism in order to be themselves, those who are caring, those who harass and kill their prey, the heroes, those who seduce women with their gab, corrupt politicians, those who sell their bodies, grandparents, violent and chauvinistic men, those who live in anguish for the passage of time, and even those immured by repressing and hypocritical morality. All of the masculine categories delineated above indicate that cinema is a reflection of the great changes experienced by Spanish society during these years. During this long period, Spain has gone from being a poor, isolated, dark, sad, politically and religiously depressed country to becoming a dynamic, modern country, one of the great countries of the West. And these transformations, these men, who are diverse, who are in conflict at times, and who are depressed, hopeful, hungry, consumerist, and dreamersーthey are what cinema gathers. What follows next is a catalog of men who have wandered and roamed the Spanish screens.

Leta Fulton Whitney's The Lost Art of Bel Canto is the most important modern work written on the subject of the bel canto (beautiful singing) method.

First, it tells the story of the life of voice and piano teacher William Lincoln Whitney. It describes how he learned from his father and from the greatest masters in Europe in the late years of the 19th century. He went on to teach thousands of pupils, including the great Eleanor Steber.

The teaching materials in the second part of the book are a compilation of Mr. Whitney's personal notes and mark-ups of music. These materials were assembled by his wife, Leta, in the 1950s. Before becoming Mrs. Whitney, Leta had been William's pupil. She grasped everything about bel canto and went on to teach the method herself.

Finally, the book concludes with a charming passage written by William L. Whitney II, the son of William and Leta. His memories offer additional insights into the life of his wonderful father and mother.

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】Wreck G?ricault’s Raft and the Art of Being Lost at Sea【電子書籍】[ Tom de Freston ]

Artist Tom de Freston has long had an obsession with G?ricault's painting The Raft of the Medusa, and the troubling story behind its creation. The monumental canvas, which hangs in the Louvre, depicts a 19th century tragedy in which 150 people were drowned at sea on a raft lost in a stormy sea, when the ship Medusa was wrecked on shallow ground.

When de Freston began making an artwork with Ali, a Syrian writer blinded by a bombing, The Raft's depiction of pain and suffering resonated powerfully with him, as did G?ricault's awful life story. It spoke not only to Ali's story but to Tom's family history of trauma and anguish, offering him a passage out of the dark waters in which he found himself.

In spellbinding, visceral prose, de Freston opens a window onto the magnetic frisson that runs between a past masterpiece and contemporary artistic endeavours. He asks powerful questions about how we might translate violence, fear and trauma into art, how we try to make sense of seemingly unthinkable acts, and the value in facing and depicting the darkest horrors.

Refugees, asylum seekers, family separation, migrant detention. As the current US administration ratchets up a racist and dehumanizing immigration policy, it often seems that pretty much anything would be a better. The authors of this book have a somewhat longer memory than our mainstream media. They were, for the most part, DREAMers who fought for the passage of the DREAM Act under the Obama administration, and lost. That experience taught them hard lessons and allows them to see some of what is being missed in current immigration debates. The DREAM Act, like similar legislation proposed today, was simply a dressed up form of family separation. It sought to divide “good,” college-bound immigrants from family and community members designated less deserving of assimilation. This is a crucially important argument, one easily missed in the Democratic rush to score political points against Trumpism with policies that are often just more of the same disguised with liberal rhetoric.

As the 2020 election approaches, immigration debates will be front and center. This book offers a unique perspective that questions the assumptions underpinning both Republican and Democratic “solutions.”

Written by undocumented youth, it conveys the lived experiences of “illegality” and communicate how young people and their families navigate in diverse ways the contradictions of being undocumented.

Questions the pervasive legislative narrative that offers rights nto certain immigrants (DREAMers, etc), as long as they are willing to sell parents, siblings, and friends up the proverbial river. Instead, the authors provide a critique of such "American Dreams" as incompatible with justice and human dignity.

Marco Saavedra’s story of being intentionally arrested by Border Patrol in order to covertly enter an immigrant detention center in Broward county Florida, is the subject of the film The Infiltrators, directed by Christina Ibarra and Alex Rivera, which won this year’s Sundance NEXT section Audience Award, among others. 【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】The Motherless Child in the Novels of Pauline Hopkins【電子書籍】[ Jill Bergman ]

Well known in her day as a singer, playwright, author, and editor of the Colored American Magazine, Pauline Hopkins (1859--1930) has been the subject of considerable scholarly attention over the last twenty years. Academic review of her many accomplishments, however, largely overlooks Hopkins's contributions as novelist. The Motherless Child in the Novels of Pauline Hopkins, the first book-length study of Hopkins's major fiction, fills this gap, offering a sustained analysis of motherlessness in Contending Forces, Hagar's Daughter, Winona, and Of One Blood.
Motherlessness appears in all of Hopkins's novels. The motif, Jill Bergman asserts, resonated profoundly for African Americans living with the legacy of abduction from a motherland and familial fragmentation under slavery. In her novels, motherlessness serves as a trope for the national alienation of post-Reconstruction African Americans. The longing and search for a maternal figure, then, represents an effort to reconnect with the absent mother -- a missing parent and a lost African history and heritage. In Hopkins's oeuvre, the image of the mother of African heritage -- a source of both identity and persecution -- becomes a source of power and possibility.
Bergman shows how historical events -- such as Bleeding Kansas, the execution of John Brown, and the Middle Passage -- gave rise to a sense of motherlessness and how Hopkins's work engages with that of other contemporaneous race activists. This illuminating study opens new terrain not only in Hopkins scholarship, but also in the complex interchanges between literary, African American, psychoanalytic, feminist, and postcolonial studies.

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】Rediscovering God’s Grand Story In a Fragmented World of Pieces and Parts【電子書籍】[ James M. Roseman ]

In the passage to modernity we in the West have lost the ability to see things whole. We've closed our minds to all things transcendent and default to unbelief, and can't make sense of the persistent echoes of the voice of God that reverberate in our souls. In Rediscovering God's Grand Story, James Roseman picks up the strands of science, philosophy, history, the arts, and theology, and reweaves the tapestry to see a coherent story that makes the best sense of the world and provides real meaning and significance to our lives--God's Grand Myth. We see that the signals of transcendence that confound our culture of doubt are a universal language and vocabulary of the heart echoing the voice of God; and in the very Judeo-Christian story we so readily jettison is found the Author enabling us to see the world whole again. This essay tells why the story and promise of Christianity is so hard to hear today but won't go away. Could it be that, as T. S. Eliot wrote in the mid-twentieth century, "at the end of all our exploring will be to arrive where we started and know the place for the first time"?

Two and a half decades on, Jawbreaker's 24 Hour Revenge Therapy (1993-94) is the rare album to have lost none of its original loyalty, affection, and reverence. If anything, today, the cult of Jawbreaker-in their own words, "the little band that could but would probably rather not"-is now many times greater than it was when they broke up in 1996. Like the best work of Fugazi, The Clash, and Operation Ivy, the album is now is a rite of passage and a beloved classic among partisans of intelligent, committed, literary punk music and poetry.

Why, when a thousand other artists came and went in that confounding decade of the 90s, did Jawbreaker somehow come to seem like more than just another band? Why do they persist, today, in meaning so much to so many people? And how did it happen that, two years after releasing their masterpiece, the band that was somehow more than just a band to its fans-closer to equipment for living-was no longer?

Ronen Givony's 24 Hour Revenge Therapy is an extended tribute in the spirit of Nicholson Baker's U & I: a passionate, highly personal, and occasionally obsessive study of one of the great confessional rock albums of the 90s. At the same time, it offers a quizzical look back to the toxic authenticity battles of the decade, ponders what happened to the question of "selling out," and asks whether we today are enriched or impoverished by that debate becoming obsolete.

Curators make many decisions when they build collections or design exhibitions, plotting a passage of discovery that also tells an essential story. Collecting captures the past in a way useful to the present and the future. Exhibits play to our senses and orchestrate our impressions, balancing presentation and preservation, information and emotion. Curators consider visitors’ interactions with objects and with one another, how our bodies move through displays, how our eyes grasp objects, how we learn and how we feel. Inside the Lost Museum documents the work museums do and suggests ways these institutions can enrich the educational and aesthetic experience of their visitors.

Woven throughout Inside the Lost Museum is the story of the Jenks Museum at Brown University, a nineteenth-century display of natural history, anthropology, and curiosities that disappeared a century ago. The Jenks Museum’s past, and a recent effort by artist Mark Dion, Steven Lubar, and their students to reimagine it as art and history, serve as a framework for exploring the long record of museums’ usefulness and service.

Museum lovers know that energy and mystery run through every collection and exhibition. Lubar explains work behind the scenesーcollecting, preserving, displaying, and using art and artifacts in teaching, research, and community-buildingーthrough historical and contemporary examples. Inside the Lost Museum speaks to the hunt, the find, and the reveal that make curating and visiting exhibitions and using collections such a rewarding and vital pursuit.

At the age of fifteen, Busser Howell lost 98 percent of his vision. At the age of forty he lost the remaining 2 percent. Were the story to end there you would likely not be entirely shocked as this type of circumstance is not that uncommon. But this is not the whole storyーnot by a long shot. You see, Howell is an artistーa painter, to be exact. And prior to being a professional, working artist in New York City he was a partner and worked twenty-four years in an interior design and restoration business. Possibly even more amazing than his breaking of our stereotypes of the blind is the fact that he is not alone. Interviewing other blind artists to discover each person’s particular point of view and what kind of descriptions work for them, author and blind artist Busser Howell’s debut is an extraordinary look into a world never before seen or understood from the point of view of the visually challenged. Beginning by examining the concepts of creativity, perception, touch, and accessibility, Howell engages the vibrant, boundless minds of fifteen visually impaired artists to mine their thoughts, feelings, and understanding to piece together a common thread of experience. It is the artists telling their story, their preferences and dislikes, and their ability, despite their blindness, to tap into sight’s brain-based function to see and comprehend our world and its contents. An enlightening and fascinating journey into the artistic process as seen by those whose vision is either severely impaired or altogether absent, Howell’s impressive collection of writings and interviews is a probing examination of the artistic process and the nature of art itself. Evocative and inspiring, Blindsight is a deeply moving passage that documents the journey of visual artists as they transition from the visual input of the outside world to the output of their inner vision transcending blindness into the light of creativity.
