Gregory Emilio’s Kitchen Apocrypha delves richly and sensuously into food as sustenance, ritual, pleasure, and temptation. Drawing upon his food service experiences, Emilio contemplates hunger, abundance, community, and solitude through the lens of culinary arts. He navigates meals ranging from sacred family recipes to unassuming roadside diners, sprinkling biblical and mythological allusions throughout. Central to his narrative is a deep reverence for food’s power to nourish not just the body, but the spirit and human connection as well. A finalist for the 2021 Able Muse Book Award, Kitchen Apocrypha offers a feast both earthy and sublime.

PRAISE FOR KITCHEN APOCRYPHA:

A poet is a professor of the five senses, Lorca taught us. Gregory Emilio understands this beautifully. There are prayers here and songs of wonder, there is a communal voice and one of solitude. There is elegy and rhapsody. This book is alive. As Emilio writes in one unforgettable page (a cento!): “Saint Anthony, patron of sausage makers, / guide my pen and unkink my tongue. I sing / of a hog theater where hogs performed as men.” Gorgeous, surprising work.
ー Ilya Kaminsky, author of Deaf Republic

The fact that food, like sex, mediates for us with death provides the guiding metaphor for Gregory Emilio’s ingenious book Kitchen Apocrypha, which might equally well be titled Kitchen Epiphany. Beginning with a delightful amatory /gustatory rewrite of Yeats’s “Leda and the Swan” (“we stumbled out of the bedroom, dizzy / and undone, rapt and abandoned: hungry”), this collection riffs on many foodstuffs, spinning through poetic forms as it does so. It examines food service as well as food; it examines anorexia as well as satiety. The elemental fire by which food becomes food is felt also as the Paradise (California) wildfire, for the contents and activities of the kitchen, Emilio suggests, are a way of understanding the world. The true hospitality here is not an industry but a sacred duty to the stranger (to the reader), what the Greeks call xenia. This book is good company.
ー Karl Kirchwey, author of Stumbling Blocks

Though Jesus assured us that we could not live by bread alone, still manna from heaven manifested itself as bread, and the eucharist is a meal of bread and wine. Food is both literal and metaphorical. The poetry in Kitchen Apocrypha, about the preparation and consumption and worship of food, is a cuisine of muchness and plenty, and delicious in the richness of its vocabulary and invention. By the end of the book, you may feel stuffed, but you’ll want more.
ー Mark Jarman, author of The Heronry

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

Gregory Emilio is a poet and food writer from southern California. His poems and essays have appeared in Best New Poets, Gastronomica, North American Review, [PANK], the Rumpus, Tupelo Quarterly, and Southern Humanities Review. He holds an MFA from the University of California Riverside, and a PhD in English from Georgia State University. A mean home cook and avid cyclist, he lives in Atlanta and teaches at Kennesaw State University.
画面が切り替わりますので、しばらくお待ち下さい。 ※ご購入は、楽天kobo商品ページからお願いします。※切り替わらない場合は、こちら をクリックして下さい。 ※このページからは注文できません。

'A hymn to life, love, family, and spirit' DAVID MITCHELL, author of Cloud Atlas

The vividly told, gloriously illustrated memoir of an artist born with disabilities who searches for freedom and connection in a society afraid of strange bodies.

***WINNER OF THE BARBELLION PRIZE***

In 1958, amongst the children born with spina bifida is Riva Lehrer. She endures endless medical procedures and is told she will never have a job, a romantic relationship or an independent life. But everything changes when as an adult Riva is invited to join a group of artists, writers, and performers who are building Disability Culture. Their work is daring, edgy, funny, and dark, and it rejects tropes that define disabled people as pathetic, frightening or worthless, instead insisting that disability is an opportunity for creativity and resistance. Riva begins to paint their portraits - and her art begins to transform the myths she's been told her whole life about her body, her sexuality, and other measures of normal.

'A brilliant book, full of strangeness, beauty, and wonder' Audrey Niffenegger

'Wonderful. Nature and its wonders (translated)【電子書籍】[ Georges Lakhovsky ]

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】Nature and its wonders (translated)【電子書籍】[ Georges Lakhovsky ]

- This edition is unique;
- The translation is completely original and was carried out for the Ale. Mar. SAS;
- All rights reserved.

Nature! What domain of spirit as well as of matter does this prestigious word not contain? Nature, but all that our senses allow us to conceive of it can only give us a pale reflection of its omnipotent power.
In my book, The Secret of Life, I have already tried to lift a corner of the veil by examining some special problems posed by biology, especially those of the instincts of animals, the life of our cells, and the struggle of the organism against microbes.
In my other work, The Universion, I attempted to give an explanation of the structure of the world, I showed the function of all the forces and fluids, the raison d'?tre of all the corpuscles, electrons, protons, ions, atoms and molecules that "convey" the universal power in this supreme medium scattered in the infinity of space and time, which I called the Universion. I showed that thought could be likened to a vibration and that this vibration allowed us to reach the very concept of God.
In the volumes Matter and The Great Problem, I attempted to anatomise another mystery of nature, that of matter, showing how it arose from radiation in the same way that it gives rise to radiation.
I have attempted to show that matter is not, in truth, the product of a creation, but that of a reproduction to which I have given the name of materialisation.
Thanks to this new basic principle, it is possible to conceive that our ephemeral bodily life, if it disappears at one point in space, nevertheless continues to exist on other stars, on which we reproduce ourselves eternally.
In this new volume, I shall again attempt to wrest from nature some of its secrets, the mystery of which we have not yet succeeded in penetrating: electricity, T. S. F., the thought-vessel. S. F., thought-vibration, autosuggestion, animal and human magnetism, homeopathy and dowsing.
All these sciences, which are at present in progress, and whose exciting evolution we are demonstrating, hold in store for mankind unsuspected surprises, the consequences of which will upset our whole conception of the universe.
Certainly, alas! The more we try to get closer to the goal by penetrating more deeply into the secrets of Nature, the more we feel our powerlessness to discover its absolute meaning.
The scientist who devotes his entire life to scientific research is nothing more than a bee returning a molecule of honey to the hive.
But the light and intense faith that Nature gives us encourage us and console us for the mediocrity of the results we obtain.
Let us, therefore, always strive for a higher truth, as far as our brain can help us. It is the sole raison d'?tre of our miserable earthly life.
画面が切り替わりますので、しばらくお待ち下さい。 ※ご購入は、楽天kobo商品ページからお願いします。※切り替わらない場合は、こちら をクリックして下さい。 ※このページからは注文できません。

Awakening Artist Madness and Spiritual Awakening in Art【電子書籍】[ Patrick Howe ]

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】Awakening Artist Madness and Spiritual Awakening in Art【電子書籍】[ Patrick Howe ]

The Awakening Artist: Madness and Spiritual Awakening in Art is an art theory book that explores the collision of human madness and spiritual awakening in art. It examines a condition of insanity that can be seen in most art movements throughout art history and contrasts that insanity with revelations of beauty, wonder and truth that can also be found in many works of art. The Awakening Artist references concepts of creativity put forward by Joseph Campbell, Carl Sagan, Albert Einstein, Carl Jung and others. Furthermore, The Awakening Artist discusses many of the world s most important artists who explored the theme of awakening in art including Michaelangelo, Paul Cezanne, Claude Monet, Marcel Duchamp, Morris Graves and many others. Additionally, using concepts of Eastern philosophy, the book presents the case that human creativity originates from the same creative source that animates all of life, and that the artist naturally aligns with that creative source when he or she is in the act of creating.
画面が切り替わりますので、しばらくお待ち下さい。 ※ご購入は、楽天kobo商品ページからお願いします。※切り替わらない場合は、こちら をクリックして下さい。 ※このページからは注文できません。

**A powerful exploration of life and death, illness and grace, wonder and beauty, in the posthumous collection from one of our greatest contemporary poets

'It’s impossible not to love the world more when reading Burnside' GUARDIAN

'A master of language' HILARY MANTEL**

John Burnside’s last collection of new poems gathers around a single theme ? mortality ? and draws on his faltering health and earlier glances with death, creating a powerfully moving exploration of memory, forgetting and the seven ages.

Here, as always, there is a clear-eyed curiosity; a sense of wonder at the beleaguered natural world and its endless mutability ? its hidden beauty, often suddenly disclosed ? and a deep faith in its old gods. Burnside was always as much a spirit-guide as a poet, and here, in the Empire of Forgetting, we are never far from a fresh alertness to the world, to epiphany ? a sudden, spiritual manifestation.

There is a sense, too, in these last poems, of a man having found a ‘dwelling place’ ? a sense of rest and peace and settlement with the world. A state of grace.

**'Among the best writers of his generation, fully voiced and perfectly pitched’ ANDREW O'HAGAN

‘A titan of literature' KATHLEEN JAMIE**
画面が切り替わりますので、しばらくお待ち下さい。 ※ご購入は、楽天kobo商品ページからお願いします。※切り替わらない場合は、こちら をクリックして下さい。 ※このページからは注文できません。

The Nature of Order, Book Four: The Luminous Ground An Essay on the Art of Building and The Nature of the Universe【電子書籍】[ Christopher Alexander ]

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】The Nature of Order, Book Four: The Luminous Ground An Essay on the Art of Building and The Nature of the Universe【電子書籍】[ Christopher Alexander ]

Christopher Alexander's series of ground-breaking books including A Pattern Language and The Timeless Way of Building have pointed to fundamental truths of the way we build, revealing what gives life and beauty and true functionality to our buildings and towns. Now, in The Nature of Order, Alexander explores the properties of life itself, highlighting a set of well-defined structures present in all order - and in all life - from micro-organisms and mountain ranges to good houses and vibrant communities.

The foundations of modern scientific thought are firmly rooted in a conception that the universe is a machinelike entity, a play of baubles, machines, trinkets. To this day, our real daily experience of ourselves has no clear place in science. It is little wonder that a machine-like worldview has supported the deadly architecture of the last century. This mechanistic thinking and the consequent investment-oriented tracts of houses, condominiums and offices have dehumanized our cities and our lives. How are spirit, soul, emotion, feeling to be introduced into a building, or a street, or a development project, in modern times?

The Luminous Ground, the fourth book of The Nature of Order, contains what is perhaps the deepest revelation in the four-volume work. Here is a geometrical view of space and matter seamlessly connected to our own private, personal experience as sentient and knowing creatures. This is not merely an emotional appendix to the scientific theory of the other books. It is at the core of the entire work, and is rooted in the fact that our two sides - our analytical thinking selves, and our vulnerable emotional personalities as human beings - are coterminous. They must be harnessed at one and the same time if we are ever to really make sense of what is around us, and be able to create a living world.

Alexander breaks away completely from the one-sided mechanical model of buildings or neighbourhoods as mere assemblages of technically generated interchangeable parts. He shows us conclusively that a spiritual, emotional, and personal basis must underlie every act of building. His buildings and works of art demonstrate in detail what he means. And then, in the middle of the book, comes the linchpin of the work: a one-hundred page chapter on colour, which lavishly illustrates and dramatically conveys the way that consciousness and spirit can make their appearance in the world.

Altogether, present throughout this fourth and final book, is a new cosmology uniting matter and consciousness: consciousness inextricably joined to the substrate of matter, present in all matter, and providing all wholeness with its material, cognitive, and spiritual underpinnings. This view, though radical, conforms to our most ordinary daily intuitions. It may provide a path for those contemporary scientists who are beginning to see consciousness as the underpinning of all matter, and thus as a proper object of scientific study.

Taken as a whole, the four books create a sweeping new conception of the nature of things which is both objective and structural (hence part of science) and also personal (in that it shows how and why things have the power to touch the human heart). A step has been taken, through which these two domains - the domain of geometrical structure and the feeling it creates - kept separate during four centuries of scientific though from 1600 to 2000, have finally been united.

The Nature of Order constitutes the backbone of Building Beauty: Ecologic Design Construction Process, an initiative aimed at radically reforming architecture education, with the emphasis of making as a way to access a transformative vision of the world. The 15 fundamental properties of life guide our work and have given us much more than a set of solutions. The Nature of Order has given us the framework in which we can search and build up our own solutions.

In order to be authentically sustainable, buildings and places have to be cared for and loved over generations. Beautiful buildings and places are more likely to be loved, and they become more beautiful, and loved, through the attention given to them over time. Beauty is therefore, not a luxury, or an option, it includes and transcends technological innovation, and is a necessary requirement for a truly sustainable culture.
画面が切り替わりますので、しばらくお待ち下さい。 ※ご購入は、楽天kobo商品ページからお願いします。※切り替わらない場合は、こちら をクリックして下さい。 ※このページからは注文できません。

In My Viewfinder An Air Force Photographer's Thailand Tour of Duty - From USAF Basic Training to Documenting the Secret War Over Laos & Cambodia【電子書籍】[ William Van der Ven ]

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】In My Viewfinder An Air Force Photographer's Thailand Tour of Duty - From USAF Basic Training to Documenting the Secret War Over Laos & Cambodia【電子書籍】[ William Van der Ven ]

By the time I had arrived in Thailand to take on the responsibilities of an aerial photographer, I had spent three years in the Air Force acquiring the skills and knowledge of photography in general. I felt confident I could put those skills to work as a still-photographer and successfully complete this new tour.

Before I was to report to my new assignment I had to attend three other schools to prepare me for the rigors of my Aerial Tour of Duty. My training began with air crew survival at Fairchild AFB. While there, I came face to face with my physical and mental strengths, weaknesses, and my resolve to survive: both in body and in spirit.

From our first introductory day to the final afternoon when we received our Certificates of Completion, our instructors bombarded us with useful information and field craft for surviving the first hours of an ejection.

Being exposed to the tropical jungle around Clark AFB to a youngster of 20 years was exotic indeed. Having Negrito natives as instructors teaching us lessons in jungle craft and survival just added to the mystique. Their knowledge of the jungle was not so much taught as lived. In the short time we students spent under their tutelage, we left with enough practical bits of survival techniques to survive for 24 hours, the amount of time a standard rescue was to occur. During the jungle survival phase, I discovered that volunteering is a two-edged sword. The action may be hazardous, but the completion of the task brings its own rewards. In addition to the jungle craft, I had my first taste of using a two-way radio to communicate with as I directed the positioning of a helicopter for my extraction. From this short but very intense exercise, I learned how much words matter, and that patience is not just a virtue, but a state of mind.

In addition to my beer tasting at every port, I learned to keep track of my flight schedule, so I was never late for departures and developed the ability to stay flexible with the constant changes to our itinerary.

My travel buddy and I were turned loose in Bangkok, definitely not a city for two naive servicemen such as ourselves to roam around in. We managed to persevere by listening to our inner voices, thereby managing to see but not taste any of the city’s sins ...that is, with the exception of the beer! The only moderate fall from grace I managed to incur was a small tattoo by the “only female tattoo artist in Bangkok,” or so I had been assured.

“In his fascinating work of nonfiction, In My Viewfinder, author William Van der Ven combines an engaging writing style and impressive memory for detail into the very human story of his transition from carefree West Coast surfer, through US Air Force basic training to becoming a photographer documenting the escalating war in Southeast Asia in the early 1970s from a vantage point aboard various aircraft in the skies over Laos and Cambodia. In doing so, the author provides a wealth of information on every facet of how he grew into - and eventually mastered - this dangerous intelligence gathering process, and skillfully imparts his knowledge about a vital component of the US military’s war effort that is largely unknown to most Americans. Congratulations to William Van der Ven for so meticulously and eloquently sharing with us this piece of his life (and our nation’s history) with such unpretentious honesty.”

Michael Archer, USMC, Author, “A Patch of Ground,” “Khe Sanh Remembered,” “The Long Goodbye,” “Khe Sanh Revisited.”

“The ‘Nam. I might’ve gone. I experienced one big, flag-waving moment when I even wished to go. But that didn’t last long! Bill went. If you wonder today what that had been like, in his book, you do find out. Bill didn’t fly around the outer rim of the Vietnam War, nor did he dive into its deepest pit. He was just one more young American kid doing his very best, trying to uphold some values, seeking to make sense of all that he saw. I regard it as a highly personal diary, while it also happens to be a valuable historical document. It’s not only about the war. It’s also about the times, about the American soul and mind, about culture, and shock, and change. To understand where the U.S. is at now, you should endeavor to understand all these Things. This book will help you do that.”

Paul McHugh, Journalist and novelist
画面が切り替わりますので、しばらくお待ち下さい。 ※ご購入は、楽天kobo商品ページからお願いします。※切り替わらない場合は、こちら をクリックして下さい。 ※このページからは注文できません。
