The Nature of Order, Book Four: The Luminous Ground An Essay on the Art of Building and The Nature of the Universe【電子書籍】[ Christopher Alexander ]

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】The Nature of Order, Book Four: The Luminous Ground An Essay on the Art of Building and The Nature of the Universe【電子書籍】[ Christopher Alexander ]

Christopher Alexander's series of ground-breaking books including A Pattern Language and The Timeless Way of Building have pointed to fundamental truths of the way we build, revealing what gives life and beauty and true functionality to our buildings and towns. Now, in The Nature of Order, Alexander explores the properties of life itself, highlighting a set of well-defined structures present in all order - and in all life - from micro-organisms and mountain ranges to good houses and vibrant communities.

The foundations of modern scientific thought are firmly rooted in a conception that the universe is a machinelike entity, a play of baubles, machines, trinkets. To this day, our real daily experience of ourselves has no clear place in science. It is little wonder that a machine-like worldview has supported the deadly architecture of the last century. This mechanistic thinking and the consequent investment-oriented tracts of houses, condominiums and offices have dehumanized our cities and our lives. How are spirit, soul, emotion, feeling to be introduced into a building, or a street, or a development project, in modern times?

The Luminous Ground, the fourth book of The Nature of Order, contains what is perhaps the deepest revelation in the four-volume work. Here is a geometrical view of space and matter seamlessly connected to our own private, personal experience as sentient and knowing creatures. This is not merely an emotional appendix to the scientific theory of the other books. It is at the core of the entire work, and is rooted in the fact that our two sides - our analytical thinking selves, and our vulnerable emotional personalities as human beings - are coterminous. They must be harnessed at one and the same time if we are ever to really make sense of what is around us, and be able to create a living world.

Alexander breaks away completely from the one-sided mechanical model of buildings or neighbourhoods as mere assemblages of technically generated interchangeable parts. He shows us conclusively that a spiritual, emotional, and personal basis must underlie every act of building. His buildings and works of art demonstrate in detail what he means. And then, in the middle of the book, comes the linchpin of the work: a one-hundred page chapter on colour, which lavishly illustrates and dramatically conveys the way that consciousness and spirit can make their appearance in the world.

Altogether, present throughout this fourth and final book, is a new cosmology uniting matter and consciousness: consciousness inextricably joined to the substrate of matter, present in all matter, and providing all wholeness with its material, cognitive, and spiritual underpinnings. This view, though radical, conforms to our most ordinary daily intuitions. It may provide a path for those contemporary scientists who are beginning to see consciousness as the underpinning of all matter, and thus as a proper object of scientific study.

Taken as a whole, the four books create a sweeping new conception of the nature of things which is both objective and structural (hence part of science) and also personal (in that it shows how and why things have the power to touch the human heart). A step has been taken, through which these two domains - the domain of geometrical structure and the feeling it creates - kept separate during four centuries of scientific though from 1600 to 2000, have finally been united.

The Nature of Order constitutes the backbone of Building Beauty: Ecologic Design Construction Process, an initiative aimed at radically reforming architecture education, with the emphasis of making as a way to access a transformative vision of the world. The 15 fundamental properties of life guide our work and have given us much more than a set of solutions. The Nature of Order has given us the framework in which we can search and build up our own solutions.

In order to be authentically sustainable, buildings and places have to be cared for and loved over generations. Beautiful buildings and places are more likely to be loved, and they become more beautiful, and loved, through the attention given to them over time. Beauty is therefore, not a luxury, or an option, it includes and transcends technological innovation, and is a necessary requirement for a truly sustainable culture.

In My Viewfinder An Air Force Photographer's Thailand Tour of Duty - From USAF Basic Training to Documenting the Secret War Over Laos & Cambodia【電子書籍】[ William Van der Ven ]

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】In My Viewfinder An Air Force Photographer's Thailand Tour of Duty - From USAF Basic Training to Documenting the Secret War Over Laos & Cambodia【電子書籍】[ William Van der Ven ]

By the time I had arrived in Thailand to take on the responsibilities of an aerial photographer, I had spent three years in the Air Force acquiring the skills and knowledge of photography in general. I felt confident I could put those skills to work as a still-photographer and successfully complete this new tour.

Before I was to report to my new assignment I had to attend three other schools to prepare me for the rigors of my Aerial Tour of Duty. My training began with air crew survival at Fairchild AFB. While there, I came face to face with my physical and mental strengths, weaknesses, and my resolve to survive: both in body and in spirit.

From our first introductory day to the final afternoon when we received our Certificates of Completion, our instructors bombarded us with useful information and field craft for surviving the first hours of an ejection.

Being exposed to the tropical jungle around Clark AFB to a youngster of 20 years was exotic indeed. Having Negrito natives as instructors teaching us lessons in jungle craft and survival just added to the mystique. Their knowledge of the jungle was not so much taught as lived. In the short time we students spent under their tutelage, we left with enough practical bits of survival techniques to survive for 24 hours, the amount of time a standard rescue was to occur. During the jungle survival phase, I discovered that volunteering is a two-edged sword. The action may be hazardous, but the completion of the task brings its own rewards. In addition to the jungle craft, I had my first taste of using a two-way radio to communicate with as I directed the positioning of a helicopter for my extraction. From this short but very intense exercise, I learned how much words matter, and that patience is not just a virtue, but a state of mind.

In addition to my beer tasting at every port, I learned to keep track of my flight schedule, so I was never late for departures and developed the ability to stay flexible with the constant changes to our itinerary.

My travel buddy and I were turned loose in Bangkok, definitely not a city for two naive servicemen such as ourselves to roam around in. We managed to persevere by listening to our inner voices, thereby managing to see but not taste any of the city’s sins ...that is, with the exception of the beer! The only moderate fall from grace I managed to incur was a small tattoo by the “only female tattoo artist in Bangkok,” or so I had been assured.

“In his fascinating work of nonfiction, In My Viewfinder, author William Van der Ven combines an engaging writing style and impressive memory for detail into the very human story of his transition from carefree West Coast surfer, through US Air Force basic training to becoming a photographer documenting the escalating war in Southeast Asia in the early 1970s from a vantage point aboard various aircraft in the skies over Laos and Cambodia. In doing so, the author provides a wealth of information on every facet of how he grew into - and eventually mastered - this dangerous intelligence gathering process, and skillfully imparts his knowledge about a vital component of the US military’s war effort that is largely unknown to most Americans. Congratulations to William Van der Ven for so meticulously and eloquently sharing with us this piece of his life (and our nation’s history) with such unpretentious honesty.”

Michael Archer, USMC, Author, “A Patch of Ground,” “Khe Sanh Remembered,” “The Long Goodbye,” “Khe Sanh Revisited.”

“The ‘Nam. I might’ve gone. I experienced one big, flag-waving moment when I even wished to go. But that didn’t last long! Bill went. If you wonder today what that had been like, in his book, you do find out. Bill didn’t fly around the outer rim of the Vietnam War, nor did he dive into its deepest pit. He was just one more young American kid doing his very best, trying to uphold some values, seeking to make sense of all that he saw. I regard it as a highly personal diary, while it also happens to be a valuable historical document. It’s not only about the war. It’s also about the times, about the American soul and mind, about culture, and shock, and change. To understand where the U.S. is at now, you should endeavor to understand all these Things. This book will help you do that.”

Paul McHugh, Journalist and novelist

From Florence, in the second half of the fifteenth century, men looked into a new dawn. When the Turk took Constantinople in 1443, the "glory that was Greece" was carried to her by fleeing scholars, and she became for one brilliant generation the home of that Platonic worship of beauty and philosophy which had been so long an exile from the hearts of men. I say Platonic, because it was especially to Plato, the mystic, that she turned, possessed still by something of the mystical intensity of her own great poet, himself an exile. When, in 1444, Pope Eugenius left her to return to Rome, Florence was ready to welcome this new wanderer, the spirit of the ancient world. And the almost childish wonder with which she received that august guest is evident in all the marvellous work of the years that followed, in none more than in that of Sandro Botticelli.

The great art critic and writer John Berger joined forces again with Turkish writer and illustrator Sel?uk Demirel in this unexpected pictorial essay.

What happens when an art critic loses some of his sight to cataracts? What wonders are glimpsed once vision is restored?

In this impressionistic essay written in the spirit of Montaigne, John Berger, whose treatises on seeing have shaped cultural and media studies for four decades, records the effects of cataract removal operations on each of his eyes. The result is an illuminated take on perception. Berger ponders how we can become accustomed to a loss of sense until a dulled world becomes the norm, and describes the sudden richness of reawakened sight with acute attention to sensory detail.

This wise little book beckons us to pay close attention to our own senses and wonder at their significance as we follow Berger's journey into a more vivid, differentiated way of seeing. Demirel's witty illustrations complement the text, creating a mini-world where eyes take on whimsical lives of their own. The result is a collaborative collectors' piece perfect for every reader’s bedside table.

This title completes a trilogy of books by Berger and Demirel. Smoke was published in 2018, and What Time Is It? was published in 2019.

The Captain's Doll【電子書籍】[ D. H. Lawrence ]

The Captain's Doll is a short story or novella by the English author D. H. Lawrence. It was written in 1921 and first published by Martin Secker in March 1923 in a volume withThe Ladybird and The Fox. It was the basis of the 1983 TV film of the same name with Jeremy Irons as the Captain. The story chronicles the journey of fallen German aristocrat Countess Johanna 'Hannele' zu Rassentlow as she dates a Scottish officer of unusual philosophy. The relationship develops into one of D. H. Lawrence's idiosyncratic 'wicked triangles'. The intimate relationship between Captain Alexander Hepburn and Hannele is intruded upon when the captain's wife Evangeline travels to Germany suspicious of foul play. The plot unfolds with two parallel narratives; one in the symbolic domain, the other a traditional short story narrative about these protagonists. The concurrent symbolic tale that unfolds centers around the central image of The Captain's Doll?after which the story gains its title. This doll is a striking portrait of the Captain, with his "slender legs" and mesmerizing dark stare encapsulated in the silks and calico of a lifeless, inanimate object. This doll is an ongoing motif throughout the story as it acts as a metaphor for the dehumanizing effects of war on Hepburn ? an English gentleman who had been part of the war machine and in the aftermath has come to believe that "we are worth so very little". Another profound metaphor and image employed by Lawrence is the great 'glacier' described from afar to be "cold, angry" and a reflection of the captain's deep seated desire to subjugate Hannele and arguably conquer her "physically, sexually and from the inside" as she muses in free indirect speech narration. The couple ascend the mountain together, and the sheer enormity of this natural wonder prompts discussion of the smallness of a human being in comparison, bringing the captain to make megalomaniacal claims that he is indeed bigger than the mountain. He projects this onto the vast ice, its "soft flesh like" described with uncanny similarity to the earlier descriptions of Hannele swimming in the lake near her new home in Austria. Critics have debated the symbolic meaning of this ice monument, as the captain's determination to conquer it points to the obvious metaphorical domination of Hannele who "watches from below" as the crazed captain scrambles to the summit. Reaching the top, the captain is invigorated, yet Lawrence's narration becomes quite introspective of the transformation of the captain's worldview implicitly coupled with description of this barren vista of ice?"a world of ice"?that is "sufficient unto itself in its lifelessness". Akin to the gender commentary in The Fox on how the war had created a paradigm shift in the social roles within English society, this compelling narrative imparts to the reader a more intimate account of the death of a spirit and the dissemblance of class.
