(Cf. Whelehan 1999: 9) This essay examines the differences and similarities between the novel Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone and its film adaptation. It points out problems that occur when transposing a text to screen, and raises the question of the film's authenticity towards the novel. Firstly, different critics are going to be scrutinized to get a better understanding of the discrepancy between literary criticism and film studies. Secondly, the characteristics of each medium shall be pointed at, combined with possible arising advantages and disadvantages. The following section evaluates the fictional source Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone versus the filmic source, asking the question of the primary importance of the origin text. For a concise analysis of book and film, I provide a sequence protocol and chapter record in the appendix. Lastly, I want to consider the issue of popular culture, and examine the question of the demand of popular literature to be turned into a film. The focus of examination will always be the first Harry Potter book and film version, although some references to the later volumes are made. Amongst them was a little bee called Miss Bee. However, she never told anyone about her 'burning ambition'3 to become a writer, not even Ms Shephard, her English teacher at Wyedean Comprehensive School. Ms Shephard was a great influence on young Joanne as 'she inspired trust'4. Shephard's comments on Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone 'meant more to [Joanne Rowling] than any newspaper reviews'5. After finishing secondary school and her studies in French and Classics at Exeter University, Joanne Rowling started to work as a research asssistant at Amnesty International which was a 'very, very interesting place to work'6, but at the same time a huge mistake, because Joanne Rowling admits that as a secretary she would be anybody's 'worst nightmare'7. It was during a delayed train journey from Manchester to King's Cross Station in London, when she was obviously hit by magic. The story about a little orphan named Harry Potter, who has to live with his old-fashioned relatives and finds out that he is a wizard, came to her mind. And because she had no pen or notebook with her, she had to think it. So, Hogwarts - School of Witchcraft and Wizardry came to life in her imagination, and as she invented it, it 'felt like research'8. Ziel ist es zu zeigen, inwiefern die in 2.1 dargelegte Theorie auf die Lehrkr?fte von Hogwarts zutrifft und welchen Einfluss von der Autorin gew?hlte Abweichungen auf die Charaktere aus?ben. In 2.3 werden die Sprechweisen der Kinder analysiert. Hierzu werden exemplarisch Zitate des Protagonisten und seiner beiden besten Freunde angef?hrt. Aufgrund des vorgegebenen Rahmens k?nnen weitere Charaktere in der vorliegenden Arbeit leider nicht ber?cksichtigt werden. But often the reader is not able to say which character really belongs to the good or the evil ones. It is the ambiguity of the characters and their changes during the story that grip the readers. This paper will have a look at one exemplary character and try to solve the question whether it is good or evil. Besides, the thesis that animals and creatures in The Prisoner of Azkaban cannot be categorized as clearly as the main characters will be dealt with. In this way different aspects of the terms 'good' and 'evil' shall be demonstrated. 'Good' and 'evil' represent a pair of opposites that is part of many stories and of our whole life. Actions which are against virtues and values, which are reprehensible and damnable, are generally seen as evil. Pleasure in destroying, in lying, in betraying and in being cruel, in neglecting the rights of human beings, these aspects are declared to be evil.1 They belong to actions and their consequences which are caused by human beings, for example torturing innocent people in a war. Due to St. Augustine, these are moral evils or deficiencies of man's will. He thinks of the moral evil as the true evil because human beings have free will and the choice to do good or evil. Being a fan of this literary genre myself, I try not only to defend it through this paper but also to argue for a general cultural democracy. In my opinion both low culture and high culture belong to the general notion of culture; whether they are liked and preferred by few or by many people, they deserve to be respected. My aim is to examine fantasy literature from many angles in order to figure out how it makes its appeal and why. To be specific and explain my argument the best way possible, I analyze specific works of fantasy literature as examples. The books I chose to work with are J.R.R. Tolkien's trilogy Lord of the Rings and J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter series. Furthermore Science Fiction is briefly discussed in order to look into the differences and similarities between these two genres and clarify the controversial distinction between them. One can think of several explanations for this lasting popularity. Maybe one reason for it lies in the use of certain archetypes and story arcs that can be found in popular tales. This thesis will examine in what way and to what extent Harry Potter can be added to the archetypal heroes the American mythologist Joseph Campbell has described in his book 'The Hero with a Thousand Faces' in 1949, first by lining out the different stages Campbell laid out in his book and then by applying them to the Harry Potter novels.
