Bulldog Carney by【電子書籍】[ W.A. Fraser ]

Fraser ]

I've thought it over many ways and I'm going to tell this story as it happened, for I believe the reader will feel he is getting a true picture of things as they were but will not be again. A little padding up of the love interest, a little spilling of blood, would, perhaps, make it stronger technically, but would it lessen his faith that the curious thing happened? It's beyond me to knowーI write it as it was.

To begin at the beginning, Cameron was peeved. He was rather a diffident chap, never merging harmoniously into the western atmosphere; what saved him from rude knocks was the fact that he was lean of speech. He stood on the board sidewalk in front of the Alberta Hotel and gazed dejectedly across a trench of black mud that represented the main street. He hated the sight of squalid, ramshackle Edmonton, but still more did he dislike the turmoil that was within the hotel.

A lean-faced man, with small piercing gray eyes, had ridden his buckskin cayuse into the bar and was buying. Nagel's furtrading men, topping off their spree in town before the long trip to Great Slave Lake, were enthusiastically, vociferously naming their tipple. A freighter, Billy the Piper, was playing the "Arkansaw Traveller" on a tin whistle.

When the gray-eyed man on the buckskin pushed his way into the bar, the whistle had almost clattered to the floor from the piper's hand; then he gasped, so low that no one heard him, "By cripes! Bulldog Carney!" There was apprehension trembling in his hushed voice. Well he knew that if he had clarioned the name something would have happened Billy the Piper. A quick furtive look darting over the faces of his companions told him that no one else had recognized the horseman.

Outside, Cameron, irritated by the rasping tin whistle groaned, "My God! a land of bums!" Three days he had waited to pick up a man to replace a member of his gang down at Fort Victor who had taken a sudden chill through intercepting a plug of cold lead.

Diagonally across the lane of ooze two men waded and clambered to the board sidewalk just beside Cameron to stamp the muck from their boots. One of the two, Cayuse Gray, spoke:

"This feller'll pull his freight with you, boss, if terms is right; he's a hell of a worker."

Half turning, Cameron's Scotch eyes took keen cognizance of the "feller": a shudder twitched his shoulders. He had never seen a more wolfish face set atop a man's neck. It was a sinister face; not the thin, vulpine sneak visage of a thief, but lowering; black sullen eyes peered boldly up from under shaggy brows that almost met a mop of black hair, the forehead was so low. It was a hungry face, as if its owner had a standing account against the world. But Cameron wanted a strong worker, and his business instinct found strength and endurance in that heavy-shouldered frame, and strong, wide-set legs.

The Trail of the Lonesome Pine【電子書籍】[ John Fox, Jr ]

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】The Trail of the Lonesome Pine【電子書籍】[ John Fox, Jr ]

She sat at the base of the big treeーher little sunbonnet pushed back, her arms locked about her knees, her bare feet gathered under her crimson gown and her deep eyes fixed on the smoke in the valley below. Her breath was still coming fast between her parted lips. There were tiny drops along the roots of her shining hair, for the climb had been steep, and now the shadow of disappointment darkened her eyes. The mountains ran in limitless blue waves towards the mounting sunーbut at birth her eyes had opened on them as on the white mists trailing up the steeps below her. Beyond them was a gap in the next mountain chain and down in the little valley, just visible through it, were trailing blue mists as well, and she knew that they were smoke. Where was the great glare of yellow light that the "circuit rider" had told aboutーand the leaping tongues of fire? Where was the shrieking monster that ran without horses like the wind and tossed back rolling black plumes all streaked with fire? For many days now she had heard stories of the "furriners" who had come into those hills and were doing strange things down there, and so at last she had climbed up through the dewy morning from the cove on the other side to see the wonders for herself. She had never been up there before. She had no business there now, and, if she were found out when she got back, she would get a scolding and maybe something worse from her step-motherーand all that trouble and risk for nothing but smoke. So, she lay back and restedーher little mouth tightening fiercely. It was a big world, though, that was spread before her and a vague awe of it seized her straightway and held her motionless and dreaming. Beyond those white mists trailing up the hills, beyond the blue smoke drifting in the valley, those limitless blue waves must run under the sun on and on to the end of the world! Her dead sister had gone into that far silence and had brought back wonderful stories of that outer world: and she began to wonder more than ever before whether she would ever go into it and see for herself what was there. With the thought, she rose slowly to her feet, moved slowly to the cliff that dropped sheer ten feet aside from the trail, and stood there like a great scarlet flower in still air. There was the way at her feetーthat path that coiled under the cliff and ran down loop by loop through majestic oak and poplar and masses of rhododendron. She drew a long breath and stirred uneasilyーshe'd better go home nowーbut the path had a snake-like charm for her and still she stood, following it as far down as she could with her eyes. Down it went, writhing this way and that to a spur that had been swept bare by forest fires. Along this spur it travelled straight for a while and, as her eyes eagerly followed it to where it sank sharply into a covert of maples, the little creature dropped of a sudden to the ground and, like something wild, lay flat.

A human figure had filled the leafy mouth that swallowed up the trail and it was coming towards her. With a thumping heart she pushed slowly forward through the brush until her face, fox-like with cunning and screened by a blueberry bush, hung just over the edge of the cliff, and there she lay, like a crouched panther-cub, looking down. For a moment, all that was human seemed gone from her eyes, but, as she watched, all that was lost came back to them, and something more. She had seen that it was a man, but she had dropped so quickly that she did not see the big, black horse that, unled, was following him. Now both man and horse had stopped. The stranger had taken off his gray slouched hat and he was wiping his face with something white. Something blue was tied loosely about his throat. She had never seen a man like that before. His face was smooth and looked different, as did his throat and his hands. His breeches were tight and on his feet were strange boots that were the colour of his saddle, which was deep in seat, high both in front and behind and had strange long-hooded stirrups. Starting to mount, the man stopped with one foot in the stirrup and raised his eyes towards her so suddenly that she shrank back again with a quicker throbbing at her heart and pressed closer to the earth. Still, seen or not seen, flight was easy for her, so she could not forbear to look again. Apparently, he had seen nothingーonly that the next turn of the trail was too steep to ride, and so he started walking again, and his walk, as he strode along the path, was new to her, as was the erect way with which he held his head and his shoulders.

What does a young attractive and sexy teacher think about when issuing final grades to her Senior class? Did they deserve this final grade? Will they be successful out in the world? Will they look back and remember her for helping them reach their goals? Will some of them end up using drugs and going to prison?

This is only a couple things that Sue, the teacher of the senior class, has on her mind as she sits at her desk on the same day as graduation distributing the final grades. This senior class has been very special to her with quite a few favorite students who she has taken under her wings; mostly boys with a few girls also.

The 18-year old boys needed more direction than the girls so Sue spent more time making sure they had every opportunity to excel. Sue would take time out of her busy schedule to tutor them, helping them out with their homework and assignments, making sure they understood everything she was trying to teach.

Sue also knew that a couple of the boys had a crush on her and pretended to need help just so they could be around her. Sue knew how they looked at her while walking around the class teaching, especially if she wore something tight and sexy. There were times when she wore these outfits on purpose because secretly, she enjoyed the attention that it brought her from the males in her class.

There were even times that she thought about them doing more to her than just looking. Those were the times she enjoyed most because she knew that she could teach them so much more about life with hands-on demonstrations instead of just reading from a book.

She had many daydreams and even dreams at night whereby she would take certain ones from her class and give them special tutoring and allow them to gain real knowledge and real-life experiences.

As Sue finishes up her grading, she is interrupted by three of her favorite 18-year old students: Brad, John and Richard. Brad has been her number one favorite student with John and Richard coming in at a close second.

When she asked them what they are there for and Brad begins by saying how thankful he was for her help…Sue wonders is this reality or is it another dream? I guess we’re about to find out.

"I am the descendant of drinkers and drifters better at passing on their love for the bottle than family history..." Prepare yourself for an unvarnished, harrowing look at one Christian's life.

A powerful memoir of knowing and being known by God through the pain of loss, tragedy, and brokenness*ーEven in Our Darkness* explores what it means to fend off doubt and despair, even in the most painful trials.

Jack Deere tells the true story of his life growing up near Fort Worth, Texas in the 1950's and the disintegration of his family following his father's suicide. Despite his difficult childhood and an inclination toward the depression that had crushed his parents, Deere describes how he began to wrestle with Christianity and how "God was...slipping in through the crack of an open wound."

In his mid-twenties, Jack rose to fame and success as a leading scholar, popular speaker, and bestselling author. But despite being rescued and exalted, Jack was devastated in the years that followed, losing his troubled son to suicide and his wife to alcoholism. Only then did he fully face his own addictions, surrender control, and experience true healing.

An authentic story of the Christian life, Even in Our Darkness is like following an experienced guide through a barren country. Like many believers, Deere has had experiences that nearly destroyed him, and he was shown, by grace, how to overcome life's disappointments and learn to hear God speak in unbelievable ways, despite the darkness that surrounds us.

"Unmasked, unsettling, and unforgettable . . . this will change the landscape of your soul." ーAnn Voskamp, bestselling author of The Broken Way and One Thousand Gifts.

Translated from French by Phyllis Aronoff and Howard Scott.

From Goncourt Prize finalist a beautiful and brilliant new novel.

With a nod to Samuel Beckett and Bohumil Hrabal, a young dramatist from a West African nation describes a student protest against a brutal oligarchy and its crushing aftermath. While distributing leaflets with provocative quotations from Beckett, Ito Baraka is taken to a camp where torture, starvation, beatings, and rape are normal. Forced to inform on his friends, whose fates he now fears, and released a broken man, he is enabled to escape to Quebec. His one goal is to tell the story of the protest and pay homage to Koli Lem, a teacher, cellmate, and lover of books, who was blinded by being forced to look at the sun--and is surely a symbol of the nation.

Edem Awumey gives us a darkly moving and terrifying novel about fear and play, repression and protest, and the indomitable nature of creativity.

“Un r?cit poignant et magnifiquement ?crit.”
?La Presse

“Grave, tragique, dur, violent, mais port? par une ?criture fi?vreuse,
embras?e.
"Phillips has a gift for making 19th-century history relevant for the 21st century . . . a marvelous way to think about our current policy woes." ーDouglas Brinkley, New York Times-bestselling author of American Moonshot

How can President Lincoln's wisdom be applied to the most pressing conflicts of modern-day America? With a fresh and perceptive reading of Lincoln's own writings and speeches, bestselling author Donald T. Phillips reveals how America's sixteenth president handled many of the same national dilemmas we face today. Looking to his exemplary leadership of a fractured nation, Phillips offers a deeply relevant analysis of how Lincoln's example could help forge solutions to the many issues and divisions challenging our country now.

"[An] intelligent and often moving look at one of the nation's greatest presidents . . . Using his extensive knowledge of Lincoln, Phillips makes convincing cases throughout for what the nineteenth-century statesman's opinion would be on a wide array of issues faced by the twenty-first-century United States, including climate change, torture, immigration, and equal pay for women. 【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】Will the Circle Be Unbroken? A Memoir of Learning to Believe You’re Gonna Be Okay【電子書籍】[ Sean Dietrich ]

From celebrated storyteller "Sean of the South" comes an unforgettable memoir of love, loss, the friction of family memories, and the unlikely hope that you're gonna be alright.

Sean Dietrich was twelve years old when he scattered his father's ashes from the mountain range. His father was a man who lived for baseball, a steel worker with a ready wink, who once scaled a fifty-foot tree just to hang a tire swing for his son. He was also the stranger who tried to kidnap and kill Sean's mother before pulling the trigger on himself. He was a childhood hero, now reduced to a man in a box.

Will the Circle Be Unbroken? is the story of what happens after the unthinkable, and the journey we all must make in finding the courage to stop the cycles of the past from laying claim to our future.

Sean was a seventh-grade drop-out, a dishwasher then a construction worker to help his mother and sister scrape by, and a self-described "nobody with a sad story behind him." Yet he cannot deny the glimmers of life's goodness even amid its rough edges. Such goodness becomes even harder to deny when Sean meets the love of his life at a fried chicken church potluck, and harder still when his lifelong love of storytelling leads him to stages across the southeast, where he is known and loved as "Sean of the South."

A story that will stay with you long after the final page, Will the Circle Be Unbroken? testifies to the strength that lives within us all to make our peace with the past and look to the future with renewed hope and wonder.

The White Sniper Simo H?yh?【電子書籍】[ Tapio A. M. Saarelainen ]

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】The White Sniper Simo H?yh?【電子書籍】[ Tapio A. M. Saarelainen ]

The remarkable story of the Finnish marksman nicknamed "White Death" by the Red Army for his record number of confirmed kills.

Simo H?yh? is the most famous sniper in the world. During the Winter War fought between Russia and Finland from 1939 to 1940, he had 542 confirmed kills with iron sights, a record that still stands today.

A man of action who spoke very little, Simo H?yh? was hugely respected by his men and his superiors and given many difficult missions, including taking out specific targets. Able to move silently and swiftly through the landscape, melting into the snowbound surroundings in his white camouflage fatigues, his aim was deadly and his quarry rarely escaped. The Russians learned of his reputation as a marksman and tried several times to kill him by indirect fire. He was promoted from corporal to second lieutenant, and he was awarded the Cross of Kollaa. For sniping, Simo H?yh? only ever used his own M/28-30 rifle. Eventually, his luck ran out, and Simo received a serious head wound on March 6,1940, though he subsequently recovered.

The White Sniper fully explores Simo H?yh?'s life, his exploits in the Winter War, the secrets behind his success, including character and technique, and also includes a detailed look at his rifle itself. There are appendices on the basics of shooting, the impact of fire on the battlefield, battles on the Kollaa Front during the Winter War, and a list of ranked snipers of the world.

"No matter how many books on sniping you have read, this must be added to your list if you are serious about shooting."

A field guide to Millennial dating in New York City" ( New York Daily News).

When New York?based graphic designers and long-time friends Timothy Goodman and Jessica Walsh found themselves single at the same time, they decided to try an experiment.
The WWII historian's bracingly accurate analysis of what might have happened if Hitler ordered Operation Sea Lion to breech the shores of England.
In June 1940, German troops gathered just across the English Channel, poised for the invasion of Britain. With France defeated and Britain cowed, Hitler seemed ready for his greatest gamble. In this compelling alternative history, the Germans launch the invasion that, in reality, was never more than a plan.
Landing between Dover and Hythe, German troops push inland supported by the Luftwaffe and the impregnable panzers, and strike out towards London. The British, desperate to defeat the invaders, rally and prepare for a crucial confrontation at Maidstone. Realistic, carefully researched and superbly written, Invasion is a classic of alternate history and a thought-provoking look at how Britain's war might have been.
"Macksey's blend of what actually happened and what might have been makes for a piece of writing comparable to Frederick Forsyth at his best." ーJack Higgins
"Convincingly described and excellently illustrated." ー The Daily Telegraph, UK

Fighting Fox Company The Battling Flank of the Band of Brothers【電子書籍】[ Terry Poyser ]

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】Fighting Fox Company The Battling Flank of the Band of Brothers【電子書籍】[ Terry Poyser ]

"Intense . . . anyone familiar with the Band of Brothers story will want to read this book" ( Military Review).

Easy Company of the 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment of the 101st Airborne Division has become one of the most famous small units in US history. But fewer people are aware of Fox Company of that same regimentーthe men who fought alongside Easy Company through every step of the war in Europe, and who had their own stories to tell.

WWII vet Bill Brown decided to research the fate of a childhood friend who had served in Fox Company. Along the way, he met Terry Poyser, who was on a similar mission to research the combat death of a Fox Company man from his hometown. Together, the two authors proceeded to locate and interview every surviving Fox Company vet they could find. The ultimate result was this book, a decade in the making, offering a wealth of fascinating firsthand accounts of WWII combat as well as new perspectives on Dick Winters and others of the "Band."

Told primarily through the words of participants, Fighting Fox Company takes us through some of the most horrific close-in fighting of the war, beginning with the chaotic nocturnal paratrooper drop on D-Day. After fighting through Normandy, the drop into Holland saw prolonged, ferocious combat and even more casualties; and then during the Battle of the Bulge, Fox Company took its place in line at Bastogne during one of the most heroic against-all-odds stands in US history.

As always in combat, each man's experience is different, and the nature of the German enemy is seen here in its equally various aspects. From ruthless SS fighters to meek Volkssturm to simply expert modern fighters, the Screaming Eagles encountered the full gamut of the Wehrmacht. The work is also accompanied by rare photos and useful appendices, including rosters and lists of casualties, to give the full look at Fox Company that has long been overdue.

Proust Was a Neuroscientist【電子書籍】[ Jonah Lehrer ]

The New York Times?bestselling author provides an "entertaining" look at how artists enlighten us about the workings of the brain ( New York magazine).

In this book, the author of How We Decide and Imagine: How Creativity Works "writes skillfully and coherently about both art and science"ーand about the connections between the two ( Entertainment Weekly).

In this technology-driven age, it's tempting to believe that science can solve every mystery. After all, it's cured countless diseases and sent humans into space. But as Jonah Lehrer explains, science is not the only path to knowledge. In fact, when it comes to understanding the brain, art got there first.

Taking a group of artistsーa painter, a poet, a chef, a composer, and a handful of novelistsーLehrer shows how each one discovered an essential truth about the mind that science is only now rediscovering. We learn, for example, how Proust first revealed the fallibility of memory; how George Eliot discovered the brain's malleability; how the French chef Escoffier discovered umami (the fifth taste); how C?zanne worked out the subtleties of vision; and how Gertrude Stein exposed the deep structure of languageーa full half-century before the work of Noam Chomsky and other linguists.

More broadly, Lehrer shows that there's a cost to reducing everything to atoms and acronyms and genes. Measurement is not the same as understanding, and art knows this better than science does. An ingenious blend of biography, criticism, and first-rate science writing, Proust Was a Neuroscientist urges science and art to listen more closely to each other, for willing minds can combine the best of both to brilliant effect.

"His book marks the arrival of an important new thinker . . . Wise and fresh." ー Los Angeles Times
