A Fighter Pilot Looks At the World Upside Down Book 2 Of a Philosophical Memoir【電子書籍】[ Richard E. Jonas ]

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】A Fighter Pilot Looks At the World Upside Down Book 2 Of a Philosophical Memoir【電子書籍】[ Richard E. Jonas ]

Fighter pilots see the world differently from other people. This series of books is a philosophical memoir of how I sense humanity, society, and the universe I live in. I began these writings when I was 33 years old. For several decades it never occurred to me that I might want to publish them. In the sunset of my years ー I am three-score and twelve, now ー it began to dawn on me that it would be important, though I'm not sure to whom, for my progeny to know how I sensed the universe in which I dwelt. When that realization began to awaken, I was at first regretful that I had not undertaken the project much earlier in life. Thoughtful reflection suggests that perhaps I didn't have much to say up until then. I have collaborated with no one in this project. Nor will I, for the whole idea is to leave behind for posterity my own exclusive philosophical cogitations. It will be clear from the text that though there has been no collaboration, there was and is a great deal of influence from a great many people and philosophies on the way my mind perceived things: ? My Christian upbringing ? My parents, siblings, and other family members ? The people of the community where I grew up ? The schools where I was formally educated ? What I learned in those schools ? What I learned in the arena of life ? Friends ? Professional associations in religion, the military, the field of education, and the entertainment world ? Philosophers, both ancient and modern, who communicated with me through Gutenberg's marvelous invention. At first, I referred to this project as "Ecclesiastes." I think that choice may have been influenced by how the biblical book is titled: Ecclesiastes, or the Preacher. As I read through the books, sometimes it seems that I am Ecclesiastes, and sometimes it reads like he is a friend with whom I correspond. I don't think either sense is of any great definitive importance; it doesn't matter much either way. It is my great hope that my children and grandchildren, and theirs, and theirs, and on beyond, will look into my soul as it is reflected in these pages. The progeny of any of my contemporaries are also welcome to inquire. Please be advised, these books are not written in English. They are written in American redneck fighter pilot. They read, especially after about the first 20 years, like they would sound if you and I were having a conversation ー polite, casual, or even heated on occasion. Perhaps over a cup of cheer. Consequently, language technicalities sometimes take a bit of a beating. Some examples: ? ain't ー for am/is/are not ? ever ー for every ? don't ー for doesn't ? weren't ー for wasn't; and the converse ? they ー for there ? anyhoo ー for anyhow ? 'at ー for that ? thunk ー for thought (past tense of think) ? son of a bitch ー several variations: sunzabitches, sumbitch, et al ? . . . the spaced ellipsis ー a favorite device for making print sound like conversation ? ー the em dash ー another device for similar purpose ? frequent omission of an essential article or personal pronoun at the beginning of a sentence ? occasional omission of the final 'g' and it's replacement with an apostrophe on gerunds and present participles ? the use of all upper case letters in some words and phrases; it's my way of shouting in print. There are some exceptions. In the earlier years, I used all upper case for some eternal concepts: LOVE, TRUTH, and occasionally MAN signifying all humankind. ? italics are used for one of two purposes: to provide an emphasis in print which would be communicated with vocal inflection in a conversation; or to set apart titles of artistic or literary works ? the entries beginning in the mid 80s, start to reflect more and more a lot of the cynicism and impatience one acquires with age. Profanity, innuendo, and other foul language begin to appear. Be fore-warned: There are some areas in the books not appropriate for children nor polite company.
画面が切り替わりますので、しばらくお待ち下さい。 ※ご購入は、楽天kobo商品ページからお願いします。※切り替わらない場合は、こちら をクリックして下さい。 ※このページからは注文できません。

When Eulenspiegel came to Magdeburgーthe fame of his notorious pranks having preceded himーseveral of the best citizens asked him to give them a sample of his buffoonery. He said he would do so, and promised to fly from the roof of a house on the market place. The news spread rapidly, and old and young hurried there to see him fly. For some time Eulenspiegel stood on the low roof, moving his arms and acting as if he were going to fly, then he burst out laughing and cried: “I thought I was the only fool in the world, but I see that here are almost a whole city full of them. If you had told me that you were going to fly, I should not have believed you; and yet you believed me, a well-known fool. How should I be able to fly? I am neither a goose nor any other kind of a bird. I have no wings, and without wings and feathers nobody can fly. Now you see, I told you a falsehood.” He turned and left the roof, while the crowd separated, some laughing, some swearing, but all agreeing, that though he was a fool, he had told them the truth. “A fool may sometimes be a better judge than a wise man,” writes Johannes Andrea of a fool. Once a beggar entered the kitchen of a tavern. A large piece of meat was roasting on the spit, and the poor man took his bread from his pocket and held it over the roast, so the odor would penetrate it, then he ate it. When all his bread was gone he turned to leave, but the host went after him and demanded his pay. The poor man said, “You did not give me either meat or drink; so what should I pay you for?” The host replied, “You feasted on what was mine, on the odor of the roast, and you shall pay me for that.” They went to court about it, but judgment was suspended, until next court-day. Now one of the judges had a fool at home, and at dinner this case was talked about. Said the fool: “Pay the host with the jingle of the money, as the poor man feasted on the odor of the roast.” When court-day came around the fool’s advice was followed. A man passing through a forest, saw an old blind bear. A young bear, whose tail was in the old bear’s mouth, led him. The man took his gun and shot the young bear’s tail off. Then he took hold of it and led the blind bear for two miles to market at Stuttgart. A knight invited his father-confessor to dinner. The holy father arrived while the knight was still at church, and being hungry went to the kitchen where all kinds of meat were roasting. He said to the cook: “The roasts are now at their best; give me a leg from this crane and then I’ll wait for dinner.” But the cook replied: “I cannot do that; my master would send me away if I brought the bird, mutilated like that, to the table. Take it yourself, then he cannot blame me.” The confessor took a knife and cut the leg off, had the cook give him bread and wine, and sat down to enjoy it. At dinner the crane was served lying on his wounded side. The knight asked at once in an angry tone: “Where is the other leg?” His confessor, who sat next to him, whispered to him to keep quiet before his guests, that after dinner he would prove to him that the bird had only had one leg. As soon as dinner was over, the knight asked his confessor to take a walk with him. They went outside the town. On the way the knight said: “You insisted that the bird had only one leg; how is that?” “I will show you,” returned the confessor, and took him to a meadow where between thirty and forty cranes were standing, all, as usual, on one leg. Pointing to them he said: “Look, all those birds have only one leg.” The knight clapped his hands and chased them. The cranes grew frightened, stretched their necks, put down their feet, and ran. Said the knight to the confessor: “How now? You see that they have two legs?” Says the confessor: “Dear sir, if you had clapped your hands like this at the table, the other leg would have put in an appearance too.”
画面が切り替わりますので、しばらくお待ち下さい。 ※ご購入は、楽天kobo商品ページからお願いします。※切り替わらない場合は、こちら をクリックして下さい。 ※このページからは注文できません。

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】Portrait of a Gentleman (Historical Regency Romance)【電子書籍】[ Anne Marie Novark ]

A Regency Novella

Thankful for the chance to leave London and escape the unwelcome advances of an ardent suitor, Abigail Prescott accepts an invitation to Brydmoor Castle to paint the portrait of the reclusive Viscount Devlin and his small son. A young widow in straightened circumstances, she soon finds herself ensconced in his home and the object of his unwavering attention.

Nathan Holt vows never to marry again. He's done his duty and has an heir. But when Abigail Prescott comes into his vicinity, the daily presence of her in his home becomes a temptation too hard to resist. Unable to deny himself any longer, he begins his seduction of her in earnest, only to find that once will never be enough.

Excerpt:

Candles flickered in their holders, the shadows dancing on the walls and across the massive stone hearth in the Great Hall. It was late. Abigail had been restless lying in bed and decided to come downstairs. Perhaps she could add some of the finishing touches to the nearly finished portrait of Nathan and William.

"Couldn't sleep?" The deep voice echoed in the vastness of the hall.

Abigail gasped and whirled around in time to see Nathan emerge from the shadows. "You frightened me," she said, her own voice breathless in her ears. Warily, she watched his approach; his firm tread loud in the hush of the night.

He walked straight toward her, his eyes holding hers in a look as old as time itself. Her stomach plummeted and her skin tingled against the silky fabric of her nightgown. Since she'd seen him last, he'd removed his coat and neckcloth and his shirt was unbuttoned at the throat. He'd obviously not gone to bed yet, late as it was.

Standing before her, he took the paintbrush from her limp fingers and set it on the table next to the easel. "I couldn't sleep either," he said, his voice low and rough. "All I could think about was . . . this."

Reflections on Lesbian Love and Marriage【電子書籍】

Marriage today isn't what it used to be: for better, not for worse. As same-sex weddings are becoming more common, the classic love-story happy ending is taking on a decidedly new twist, everyone has a fresh role to play, and supporters and opponents of gay marriage alike are finding themselves in the midst of a revolution that's redefining marriageーboth as a personal choice and as an institutionーas we know it.

In Here Come the Brides!, editors Audrey Bilger and Michele Kort gather together the voices of women taking part in-and shaping-this major historical shift. Representing a diversity of points of view in terms of race, class, ethnicity, and gender identification, this collection of essays, stories, and visual images takes a multidimensional look at how opening up the traditional order of "man and wife" to include the possibility of "wife and wife" is altering our social landscape.

From wedding pictures and images of protest signs to comical anecdotes and sober philosophical analyses, Here Come the Brides! is an exploration of how the legalization of same-sex marriages has irrevocably changed the way lesbians think about their unions and their lives-and a celebration of the dream of lesbian happily-ever-afters.
画面が切り替わりますので、しばらくお待ち下さい。 ※ご購入は、楽天kobo商品ページからお願いします。※切り替わらない場合は、こちら をクリックして下さい。 ※このページからは注文できません。

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】Undercover Girl The Lesbian Informant Who Helped the FBI Bring Down the Communist Party【電子書籍】[ Lisa E. Davis ]

At the height of the Red Scare, Angela Calomiris was a paid FBI informant inside the American Communist Party. As a Greenwich Village photographer, Calomiris spied on the New York Photo League, pioneers in documentary photography. While local Party o?cials may have had their sus-picions about her sexuality, her apparent dedication to the cause won them over.

When Calomiris testified for the prosecution at the 1949 Smith Act trial of the Party's National Board, her identity as an informant (but not as a lesbian) was revealed. Her testimony sent eleven party leaders to prison and decimated the ranks of the Communist Party in the US.

Undercover Girl is both a new chapter in Cold War history and an intimate look at the relationship between the FBI and one of its paid inform-ants.
When you are a 28-year-old white woman reporter, with a newspaper editor husband and a college administrator father, and you find a stone on a holy Lakota mountain, and a Lakota holy man says, Do you see the four trees on this stone? you look and see only four fern leaves fossilized on the stone. When he says You will meet four men in 9,2,4, and 8 and points to some fossilized numbers in the corner of the stone, you are skeptical and offer to give him the stone. When he says, No, it is your stone, you do keep it. And over the next two years, when in September, February, April, and August, you meet four men of the bloodlines of great Lakota (Sioux) and Apache, you start honoring the stone, and the mountain you found it on. You start paying close attention to the holy man, Frank Fools Crow, and his wife Kate, who is the mother you never had. This book is the story of finding the four men, the four trees. It is the story of what they and Fools Crow taught me as we traveled several states together. There were powerful adventures at North and South Dakota and Montana reservations and universities, a Minnesota sacred pipestone quarry and Minnesota maximum security prison, a California publishing company, and Alaska cities. These are places where September, February, April, and August brought four holy men. The skeptical just the facts, man white woman began to see the connectedness of all of life. On Bear Butte near Sturgis, South Dakota, where Crazy Horse had fasted, she gave her life to the Great Spirit, because her energies were being miserably unused and the world was going by without her doing something she felt she should be doing. In exchange for her offering up her life, the stone glowed, a tree gave a loving message, stars fell, and she would never feel alone again. Fools Crows prediction also brought Native American women to me, and we wrote their books and traveled their lands in Minnesota and Alaska. It was fun to travel them again in this book. Also crossing my path were people of black, white, and Asian American cultures. The book tells of the exciting events with these people. I am writing this, my story, so that all these people can live on.
画面が切り替わりますので、しばらくお待ち下さい。 ※ご購入は、楽天kobo商品ページからお願いします。※切り替わらない場合は、こちら をクリックして下さい。 ※このページからは注文できません。

The Black Patch【電子書籍】[ Fergus Hume ]

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】The Black Patch【電子書籍】[ Fergus Hume ]

Beatrice meditated in the parlour-carriage on the scene which had taken place at noon between her stepfather and Paslow. Without vouchsafing the least explanation, Alpenny had crept back to his den and was there still, with the door locked as usual. Twice and thrice did Durban call him to the midday meal, but he declined to come out. Beatrice had therefore eaten alone, and was now enjoying a cup of fragrant coffee which Durban had lately brought in. At the moment, he was washing up dishes in the kitchen, to the agreeable accompaniment of a negro song, which he was whistling vigorously. The girl, as she wished to be, was entirely alone. Durban could not explain the reason for the quarrel, and Alpenny would not; so Beatrice was forced to search her own thoughts for a possible explanation. So far she had been unsuccessful. The tiny parlour was entirely white in its decorations, and looked extremely cool on this hot, close day. The walls were hung with snowy linen, the furniture was upholstered with the same, and the carpet, the curtains, the ornaments, even the cushions were all pearly white. Everything, when examined, was cheap in quality and price, but the spotlessly clean look of the room--if it could be called so--made up for the marked want of luxury. Beatrice herself wore a white muslin, with cream-hued ribbons, therefore no discordant colour broke the Arctic tone of the parlour. Only through the open door could be seen the brilliant tints of the flowers, blazing against a background of emerald foliage. The Snow Parlour was the name of this fantastic retreat, and the vicar's wife took the appellation as a personal insult. Rather should she have regarded it a compliment of the highest, as this maiden's bower was infinitely prettier than she was or ever could be. Since it was impossible to learn anything definite from Durban or his master, Beatrice was striving to possess her soul in peace until seven o'clock: at that hour she intended to meet Vivian by the Witches' Oak, and there ask him bluntly what he had said or done to make stepfather so furious. Having settled this in her own mind, she lay back in the deep chair, sipping her coffee, and allowing her thoughts to wander; they took her back over some five-and-twenty years, and into a life barren and uneventful enough. Beatrice should have been happy, for, like the oft-quoted nation, she had no history. All her life Beatrice had never known a mother's love. According to Alpenny, who supplied the information grudgingly enough, Mrs. Hedge with her one-year-old baby had married him, only to die within three months after the ceremony. Then Durban had taken charge of the child; since the miser, for monetary and other reasons, would not engage a nurse. For two years the old servant had tenderly cared for the orphan, and it was a great pain to him when Alpenny placed the little Beatrice in charge of a Brighton lady, called Miss Shallow. The spinster was in reduced circumstances, and apparently under Alpenny's thumb as regards money matters. She received the child unwillingly enough, although she feared to disobey a tyrant who could make things disagreeable for her; but later, she grew to love her charge, and behaved towards the orphan with a devotion scarcely to be expected from a nature soured by misfortune.
画面が切り替わりますので、しばらくお待ち下さい。 ※ご購入は、楽天kobo商品ページからお願いします。※切り替わらない場合は、こちら をクリックして下さい。 ※このページからは注文できません。

Oh, God, what if they're following me? He turned his head slowly toward the right and moved his eyes to look at the driver of the car on his right. It was a black woman. She did not look his way and looked innocent enough. He breathed slightly and looked to his left. The driver of the car was a white-haired, elderly man. I think it's okay, he thought. A tractor-trailer suddenly appeared in his rearview mirror. What the hell's he doing, he asked himself. Are they allowed on the Beltway or not? He was confused and couldn't think. Just keep driving. Change lanes to see if he's following, he decided. But seeing the exit to Interstate 66 going toward Manassas, he took the exit. The tractor-trailer stayed on the Beltway headed for Maryland.

Just keep driving, Jamie thought. Maybe just lay low for a couple of days

He drove for an hour, then crossed the Blue Ridge Mountains and started down into the valley toward Interstate 81, which ran all the way through Virginia and into Tennessee.
