After Royal Navy captain Sir John Franklin disappeared in the Arctic in 1846 while seeking the Northwest Passage, the search for his two ships, Erebus and Terror, and survivors of his expedition became one of the most exhaustive quests of the 19th century. Despite tantalizing clues, the ships were never found, and the fate of Franklin’s expedition passed into legend as one of the North’s great and enduring mysteries.

Anthony Dalton explores the eventful and fascinating life of this complex and intelligent man, beginning with his early sea voyages and arduous overland explorations in the Arctic. After years in Malta and Tasmania, Franklin realized his dream of returning to the Far North; it would be his last expedition. Drawing from evidence found by 19th-century Arctic explorers following in Franklin’s footsteps and investigations by 20th-century historians and archaeologists, Dalton retraces the route of the lost ships and recounts the sad tale of Franklin, his officers and men in their final agonizing months.

He lost to the Republican Party's candidate, Abraham Lincoln, whom he had defeated two years earlier in a Senate contest following a famed series of debates. He was nicknamed the "Little Giant" because he was short of stature but was considered by many a "giant" in politics.
When the D’Shaden, an ancient enemy, long thought vanquished, returns to the land of Derania, the princes of the northern and southern kingdoms must unite in a quest to recover a long lost artifact in the shared hope that it may hold the power to stop this threat once and for all. However, even though the D’Shaden’s army is significantly smaller than it was the last time he sought to conquer these lands, the likelihood of his victory has only improved with the passage of time. For the source of all the magic in the world has been hopelessly corrupted. Those permanently connected to it; the elves, dwarves, even the dragons, have been rendered all but extinct, their legend rapidly fading into myth. And there are now more charlatans pretending to be spell casters than actual Sorcerers and Wizards. The truth is, if the princes and their companions fail in their mission, the land of Derania is all but lost. Of Light and Shadow is a fast paced, action-adventure fantasy novel filled with memorable characters both heroic and villainous, moments of tragedy and triumph, epic battles and surprising twists. If you’re a fan of Terry Brooks, Brandon Sanderson, David Edding, Robin Hobb, and David Gemmell, then this is the book for you.

Beginning with the Gospels, interpretations of the life of Jesus have flourished for nearly two millennia, yet a clear and coherent picture of Jesus as a man has remained elusive. In Rabbi Jesus, the noted biblical scholar Bruce Chilton places Jesus within the context of his times to present a fresh, historically accurate, and revolutionary examination of the man who founded Christianity.

Drawing on recent archaeological findings and new translations and interpretations of ancient texts, Chilton discusses in enlightening detail the philosophical and psychological foundations of Jesus’ ideas and beliefs. His in-depth investigation also provides evidence that contradicts long-held beliefs about Jesus and the movement he led. Chilton shows, for example, that the High Priest Caiaphas, as well as Pontius Pilate, played a central role in Jesus’ execution. It is, however, Chilton’s description of Jesus’ role as a rabbi, or "master," of Jewish oral traditions, as a teacher of the Cabala, and as a practitioner of a Galilean form of Judaism that emphasized direct communication with God that casts an entirely new light on the origins of Christianity.

Seamlessly merging history and biography, this penetrating, highly readable book uncovers truths lost to the passage of time and reveals a new Jesus for the new millennium.

Vanity Fair, published in serial parts in 1847-8, made William Makepeace Thackeray famous 'all but at the top of the tree', he told his mother, 'and having a great fight up there with Dickens'. Behind him lay an extraordinary life - an intense, Anglo-Indian childhood, a fortune lost by his early twenties, a disastrous marriage to a wife who went mad and left him to bring up two small daughters in near penury.

But his later life was no less troubled. As D.J. Taylor shows in this incisive biography, Thackeray was a complex, touchy man, acutely sensitive to criticism and fearful of the publicity that accompanied his passage through life.

Yui struggles to continue on, alone with her pain. Then one day she hears about a man who has an old disused telephone booth in his garden. There, those who have lost loved ones find the strength to speak to them and begin to come to terms with their grief. As news of the phone booth spreads, people travel to it from miles around. Soon Yui makes her own pilgrimage to the phone booth. But once there she cannot bring herself to speak into the receiver. Troubled Pilgrimage is his account of a journey to his ancestral Sindh in Pakistan. Struggling against the preconceptions nurtured in post-1947 India, and his own recent fears of the country he’s about to visit, Bhaneja finds in Sindh the familiar and the strange, a homeland whose experience is as warm as it is wrenching, dispelling misunderstandings while raising profound questions about himself.
A New York Times Notable Book ? Winner of the National Jewish Book Award ? Winner of the National Book Critics Circle Award ? A Los Angeles Times Book Prize Finalist

“A gripping detective story, a stirring epic, a tale of ghosts and dark marvels, a thrilling display of scholarship, a meditation on the unfathomable mystery of good and evil, a testimony to the enduring power of the ancient archetypes that haunt one Jewish family and the greater human family, The Lost is as complex and rich with meaning and story as the past it seeks to illuminate. A beautiful book, beautifully written.”ーMichael Chabon

In this rich and riveting narrative, a writer's search for the truth behind his family's tragic past in World War II becomes a remarkably original epicーpart memoir, part reportage, part mystery, and part scholarly detective workーthat brilliantly explores the nature of time and memory, family and history.

The Lost begins as the story of a boy who grew up in a family haunted by the disappearance of six relatives during the Holocaustーan unmentionable subject that gripped his imagination from earliest childhood. Decades later, spurred by the discovery of a cache of desperate letters written to his grandfather in 1939 and tantalized by fragmentary tales of a terrible betrayal, Daniel Mendelsohn sets out to find the remaining eyewitnesses to his relatives' fates. That quest eventually takes him to a dozen countries on four continents and forces him to confront the wrenching discrepancies between the histories we live and the stories we tell. And it leads him, finally, back to the small Ukrainian town where his family's story began, and where the solution to a decades-old mystery awaits him.

Deftly moving between past and present, interweaving a world-wandering odyssey with childhood memories of a now-lost generation of immigrant Jews and provocative ruminations on biblical texts and Jewish history, The Lost transforms the story of one family into a profound, morally searching meditation on our fragile hold on the past. Deeply personal, grippingly suspenseful, and beautifully written, this literary tour de force illuminates all that is lost, and found, in the passage of time.

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】Death on the Barrens A True Story of Courage and Tragedy in the Canadian Arctic【電子書籍】[ George James Grinnell ]

Set in the remote arctic region of Northern Canada, this book takes readers on a harrowing canoe voyage that results in tragedy, redemption, and, ultimately, transformation. George Grinnell was one of six young men who set off on the 1955 expedition led by experienced wilderness canoeist Art Moffatt. Poorly planned and executed, the journey seemed doomed from the start. Ignoring the approaching winter, the men became entranced with the peace and beauty of the arctic in autumn. As winter closed in, they suddenly faced numbing cold and dwindling food. When the crew is swept over a waterfall, Moffatt is killed and most of the gear and emergency food supplies destroyed. Confronting freezing conditions and near starvation, the remaining crew struggled to make it back to civilization. For Grinnell, the three-month expedition was both a rite of passage and a spiritual odyssey. In the Barrens, he lost his sense of identity and what he had been conditioned to think about society and himself. Forever changed by the experience, he unsparingly describes how the expedition influenced his adult life and what powerful insights he was able to glean from this life-altering experience.

From the Trade Paperback edition.

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】The Passage of Literature Genealogies of Modernism in Conrad, Rhys, and Pramoedya【電子書籍】[ Christopher GoGwilt ]

Joseph Conrad, Jean Rhys, and Pramoedya Ananta Toer are writers renowned for crafting narratives of great technical skill that resonate with potent truths on the colonial condition. Yet given the generational and geographical boundaries that separated them, they are seldom considered in conjunction with one another. The Passage of Literature unites the three in a bracing comparative study that breaks away from traditional conceptions of modernism, going beyond temporal periodization and the entrenched Anglo-American framework that undergirds current scholarship. This study nimbly traces a trio of distinct yet interrelated modernist genealogies. English modernism as exemplified by Conrad's Malay trilogy is productively paired with the hallmark work of Indonesian modernism, Pramoedya's Buru quartet. The two novel sequences, penned years apart, narrate overlapping histories of imperialism in the Dutch East Indies, and both make opera central for understanding the cultural dynamic of colonial power. Creole modernism--defined not only by the linguistic diversity of the Caribbean but also by an alternative vision of literary history--provides a transnational context for reading Rhys's Good Morning, Midnight and Wide Sargasso Sea, each novel mapped in relation to the colonial English and postcolonial Indonesian coordinates of Conrad's The Shadow-Line and Pramoedya's This Earth of Mankind. All three modernisms-English, Creole, and Indonesian-converge in a discussion of the Indonesian figure of the nyai, a concubine or house servant, who represents the traumatic core of transnational modernism. Throughout the study, Pramoedya's extraordinary effort to reconstruct the lost record of Indonesia's emergence as a nation provides a model for reading each fragmentary passage of literature as part of an ongoing process of decolonizing tradition. Drawing on translated and un-translated works of fiction and nonfiction, GoGwilt effectively reexamines the roots of Anglophone modernist studies, thereby laying out the imperatives of a new postcolonial philology even as he resituates European modernism within the literary, linguistic, and historical context of decolonization.

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】I Kiss Your Hands Many Times Hearts, Souls, and Wars in Hungary【電子書籍】[ Marianne Szegedy-Maszak ]

A magnificent wartime love story about the forces that brought the author’s parents together and those that nearly drove them apart

Marianne Szegedy-Masz?k’s parents, Hanna and Alad?r, met and fell in love in Budapest in 1940. He was a rising star in the foreign ministryーa vocal anti-Fascist who was in talks with the Allies when he was arrested and sent to Dachau. She was the granddaughter of Manfred Weiss, the industrialist patriarch of an aristocratic Jewish family that owned factories, were patrons of intellectuals and artists, and entertained dignitaries at their baronial estates. Though many in the family had converted to Catholicism decades earlier, when the Germans invaded Hungary in March 1944, they were forced into hiding. In a secret and controversial deal brokered with Heinrich Himmler, the family turned over their vast holdings in exchange for their safe passage to Portugal.

Alad?r survived Dachau, a fragile and anxious version of himself. After nearly two years without contact, he located Hanna and wrote her a letter that warned that he was not the man she’d last seen, but he was still in love with her. After months of waiting for visas and transit, she finally arrived in a devastated Budapest in December 1945, where at last they were wed.

Framed by a cache of letters written between 1940 and 1947, Szegedy-Masz?k’s family memoir tells the story, at once intimate and epic, of the complicated relationship Hungary had with its Jewish populationーthe moments of glorious humanism that stood apart from its history of anti-Semitismーand with the rest of the world. She resurrects in riveting detail a lost world of splendor and carefully limns the moral struggles that history exactedーfrom a country and its individuals.

Praise for I Kiss Your Hands Many Times

“I Kiss Your Hand Many Times is the sweeping story of Marianne Szegedy-Masz?k’s family in pre? and post?World War II Europe, capturing the many ways the struggles of that period shaped her family for years to come. But most of all it is a beautiful love story, charting her parents’ devotion in one of history’s darkest hours.”ーArianna Huffington, president and editor-in-chief, the Huffington Post Media Group

“In this panoramic and gripping narrative of a vanished world of great wealth and power, Marianne Szegedy-Masz?k restores an important missing chapter of European, Hungarian, and Holocaust history.”ーKati Marton, author of Paris: A Love Story and Enemies of the People: My Family’s Journey to America

“How many times can a heart be broken? Hungarians know, Marianne Szegedy-Masz?k’s family more than most. History has broken theirs again and again. This is the story of that violence, told by the daughter of an extraordinary man and extraordinary woman who refused to surrender to it. Every perfectly chosen word is as it happened. So brace yourself. Truth can break hearts, too.”ーRobert Sam Anson, author of War News: A Young Reporter in Indochina

“This family memoir is everything you could wish for in the genre: the story of a fascinating family that illuminates the historical time it lived through. . . . Informative and fascinating in every way, [I Kiss Your Hands Many Times] is a great introduction to World War II Hungary and a moving tale of personal relationships in a time of great duress.”ーBooklist (starred review)

A funny, poignant coming-of-age memoir told through the shoes that she wore.

From baby booties to orthopedic brogues (and all the high and low heels in between) shoes mark important rites of passage, reminding us of both the good and bad times: the road not taken, the prince that got away, the missed opportunities, the traveling, the fun. Most of all, they bring to mind the people we’ve loved and sometimes lost along the way.

Combining tidbits of cultural history, Morrisroe chronicles her life as a bullied Catholic schoolgirl in “Moby Dick” brogues; a besotted college student in granny boots; an aspiring journalist in Annie Hall oxfords; a skeptical bride in her first Manolos; a reluctant fashionista in towering peep-toe pumps; and a concerned daughter, whose elderly mother hoped that her New Balance sneakers would help her regain her old balance. With wit and compassion, she introduces us to an unforgettable cast of characters, from her grandfather, who treated the family to legendary foot rubs, to her husband, whose vast collection of vintage Puma sneakers threatened to overwhelm their apartment and derail their marriage.

Morrisroe’s “coming-of-age” is, at its heart, the story of a generation of women who’ve enjoyed a world of freedom and opportunity that was unthinkable to their mothers. Spanning five decades and countless footwear trends, 9 ? Narrow is, like Love, Loss and What I Wore, about how we remember important events through a coat, or a dress, or in this case, a Beatle boot or Confirmation “wedgie.” With her charming sense of humor and irresistible voice, Morrisroe not only recounts her own story but also everywoman’s. Funny, candid and unexpectedly poignant, 9 ? Narrow is about how we grow up, grow older, and finally grow into our own shoes.

The Mind's I looks into the life of an anonymous college student as he recounts his experiences during a semester abroad in Europe. He crosses the Atlantic, lands in England, and immediately heads to Amsterdam. He ogles hobos and hookers, gets depressed at Anne Frank's house, smokes Pot, then turns Schizo at the Van Gogh Museum. Initial exploration over, he travels to Prague, Czech Republic, his new home base for the school semester. He takes in the city and makes local friends, including a Croatian stranger whom he makes out with in a gigantic nightclub, then goes home with her. Having settled in, he takes a spontaneous trip to Munich where he encounters Oktoberfest and lots of pornography. He gets so drunk at Oktoberfest, that he wakes up on a train to Berlin and realizes that he has lost all his valuables, credit card, and identification. This presents obstacles leaving Germany. Eventually, he secures passage back to Prague in time to welcome his family for a visit. They then take a Kafkaesque trip to Ukraine that includes culture shock, extreme poverty, and dangerous driving. They return to Prague and randomly run into a celebrity at a marionette theater. After his family returns home, some dorm mates and he decide to experiment with a drug called Perspective. They have such a glorious time, his friend and he decide to smuggle some across the border the following weekend to Krakow, Poland. There they encounter: out of control drunks, prejudice, and a "prison." They nearly miss their train out of the country. Feeling empowered now after experiencing some new and unfamiliar cultures, he decides to travel unaccompanied for the first time. He goes to Budapest, Hungary and visits: castles, a citadel, museums, churches, Parliament, monuments, night-clubs, medicinal bathes, and encounters strange Hungarian people. His semester in Prague comes to a close. He goes drinking with his teacher, and says bye to his temporarily gained then lost friends. He reluctantly fesses up to an innocent affair with a beautiful underage Czech girl. He still has some time to travel before returning to the U.S. so he heads to Paris where he does: the Eiffel Tower, the Louvre, Pompedu, Notre Dame, Moulin Rouge, Arc de Triumph, crepes, wine, and cheese. He then takes a full-day bus ride to Spain to visit a friend. He remembers his previous trip to the country when he visited nude beaches and nearly died. Hanging out with his friend in Santiago de Compestela, it dawns on him how the new and unfamiliar, has become strangely normal. He heads to Madrid, witnesses a mugging, and has a terribly frustrating day. The next day he goes to London for his last night in Europe. He waxes nostalgia and spends the night exploring London, flirting, and dancing. Finally, he returns to the U.S. His savings being completely depleted now, he gets a job as a pizza delivery driver, then quickly gets fired. Life has once again become disappointing and humdrum now that the magic from his study abroad trip has worn off. But just when life became ordinary again, he gets a visit from his cousin, that turns into a life-altering night. Despite all his short comings, he falsely concludes that he is the next Messiah. After living for a few days as a savior, he begins to doubt himself. Following bizarre interactions with a curious squirrel and a mysterious guitar player, he realizes his folly. But in this process of finding out who he wasn't, he finally identifies who he really is, and even discovers the meaning of life. He then follows up this revelation by accidentally sexually harassing someone and thoroughly embarrassing himself.

In extreme fantasy anything can happen. In Mike Ashley's breathtaking new anthology the only rules are those the writer makes - these are stories to liberate both the writers' and readers' imagination. They will take you to hell and back (literally - two of the stories involve hell in ways never explored before).

For too long fantasy fiction has become synonymous with vast heroic-fantasy adventures in imitation of The Lord of the Rings, but the genre has always been far greater than dwarves and elves. Today many writers are rediscovering the wider world of fantasy and creating bold new ideas or magically reworking older arts.

Ashley selects 25 stories by the likes of Orson Scott Card, Paul Di Filippo, A. A. Attanasio, Michael Swanwick, Christopher Priest and Peter Crowther, arranged in ascending order of 'extremeness'.

The anthology opens with a story that takes us beyond Middle Earth in 'Senator Bilbo' by Andy Duncan - showing what happens when a radical descendant of his famous namesake tries to introduce immigration control - and reaches the ultimate in 'The Dark One' by A. A. Attanasio, a rite of passage story where you, the reader, discover you are being tested to become the successor to Satan.

Other stories include:

A man with a terminal disease looks for a cure in a world where Edward Lear meets Lewis Carroll.
A man decides to banish all language.
A tour of Hell by the boatman himself.
The great comic stars of Hollywood find themselves seeking their lost world.
A magical experiment recreates the Crucifixion.
Suddenly all colour drains out of the world.
A magical recreation of Chinese fantasy cinema where a magician and his adepts fight the flying dead.

From the acclaimed author of Brothers and To Live: a major new novel that limns the joys and sorrows of life in contemporary China.

Yang Fei was born on a moving train. Lost by his mother, adopted by a young switchman, raised with simplicity and love, he is utterly unprepared for the tempestuous changes that await him and his country. As a young man, he searches for a place to belong in a nation that is ceaselessly reinventing itself, but he remains on the edges of society. At age forty-one, he meets an accidental and unceremonious death. Lacking the money for a burial plot, he must roam the afterworld aimlessly, without rest. Over the course of seven days, he encounters the souls of the people he’s lost.

As Yang Fei retraces the path of his life, we meet an extraordinary cast of characters: his adoptive father, his beautiful ex-wife, his neighbors who perished in the demolition of their homes. Traveling on, he sees that the afterworld encompasses all the casualties of today’s Chinaーthe organ sellers, the young suicides, the innocent convictsーas well as the hope for a better life to come. Yang Fei’s passage maps the contours of this vast nationーits absurdities, its sorrows, and its soul. Vivid, urgent, and panoramic, The Seventh Day affirms Yu Hua’s place as the standard-bearer of modern Chinese fiction.

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】The Mammoth Book of Travel in Dangerous Places: Arctic【電子書籍】[ John Keay ]

Four Years in the Ice - John Ross
Disgraced and dishonored for his report of an imaginary mountain range blocking the most likely access to the North West Passage, in 1829 Ross returned to Canada's frozen archipelago to vindicate his reputation. He rounded the north of Baffin Island and entered what he named the Gulf of Boothia. Here the Victory, his eccentric paddle-steamer, became frozen to the ice. Through three tantalizingly brief summers the expedition tried to find a way out and through four long winters then endured the worst of Arctic conditions in a makeshift camp. In July 1832, with the ship long since abandoned, Ross made what must be their last bid to reach open water.

Living off Lichen and Leather - John Franklin
In 1845, looking again for the North West Passage, two well-crewed ships under Franklin's command sailed into the Canadian Arctic and were never seen again. There began the most prolonged search ever mounted for an explorer. For Franklin had been lost before and yet had survived. In 1821, returning from an overland reconnaissance of the Arctic coast north of Great Slave Lake, he and Dr. John Richardson, with two Lieutenants and about a dozen voyageurs (mostly French), had run out of food and then been overtaken by the Arctic weather. Franklin's narrative of what is probably the grisliest journey on record omits unpalatable details, like the cannibalism of one of his men, the murder of Lieut. Hood, and Richardson's summary shooting of the murderer; but it well conveys the debility of men forced to survive on leather and lichen (triple de roche) plus that sense of demoralization and disintegration that heralds the demise of an expedition.

Adrift on an Arctic Ice Floe - Fridtjof Nansen
Norwegian patriot, natural scientist, and Nobel laureate, Nansen caught the world's imagination when he almost reached the North Pole in 1895. The attempt was made on skis from specially reinforced vessel which, driven into the ice, was carried from Siberia towards Greenland. The idea stemmed from his first expedition, an 1888 crossing of Greenland. Then too he had used skis and then too, unwittingly and nearly disastrously, he had taken to the ice. Arrived off Greenland's inhospitable east coast, he had ordered his five-man party to spare their vessel by crossing the off-shore ice floe in rowing boats. A task which he expected to take a few hours turned into an involuntary voyage down the coast of twelve days.

The Pole is Mine - Robert Edwin Peary
Born in Pennsylvania and latterly a commander in the US navy, Peary had set his sights on claiming the North Pole from childhood. It was not just an obsession but a religion, his manifest destiny. Regardless of cost, hardship, and other men's sensibilities, he would be Peary of the Pole, and the Pole would be American. Critics might carp over the hundreds of dogs that were sacrificed to his ambition, over the chain of supply depots that would have done credit to a military advance, and over the extravagance of Peary's ambition, but success, in 1909, came only after a catalogue of failures; and even then it would be disputed. Under the circumstances his triumphalism is understandable and, however distasteful, not unknown amongst other Polar travelers.

In A Season in Hell, at the age of eighteen, the French poet Arthur Rimbaud predicted the rest of his life: 'My day is done; I'm leaving Europe. The sea air will burn my lungs; lost climes will tan my skin.' Three years later, in 1876, he joined the Royal Army of the Dutch Indies as an infantryman and sailed for Java, where he promptly deserted and fled into the jungle. It was the most enigmatic passage in his life crowded with puzzles and contrarieties.

In the first book devoted to Rimbaud's lost voyage to Asia, the novelist and critic Jamie James reviews everything that is known about the episode; from there, he imaginatively spirals into a reconstruction of what the poet must have seen and informed speculation about what he might have done, vividly recreating life in nineteenth-century Java along the way. Rimbaud in Java concludes with an inquiry into what the Orient represented in the poet's imagination, with a scandalous, amusing history of French orientalism. James' surprising book is a richly concentrated blend of biography, criticism and thought-travel, which brings into sharp focus this brief encounter between a great writer and a vanished world.

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】All the Men Are Sleeping【電子書籍】[ D.R. MacDonald ]

Bestselling and award-winning writer D. R. MacDonald gives us a searing and muscular collection of short fiction reminiscent of Richard Ford and Alistair MacLeod.

With All the Men Are Sleeping, celebrated author D. R. MacDonald delivers a haunting collection of short fiction remarkable for its restrained passion and eloquence. As he did with Cape Breton Road, MacDonald writes of disruption and loss with brusque tenderness. He deftly explores the misunderstandings between men and women, the nature of seduction and infidelity, the way geography shapes identity, and the heartache of longing -- for home, family, love.

For a fisherman in “The Flowers for Bermuda” time has not repaid the loss of his young son’s life. In “The Wharf King” a man returns to Cape Breton to bury his brother, and performs a dangerous rite of passage in an attempt to recapture the past. Little Norman in “Work” is rudderless without the companionship of his lifelong workmate.

The brilliant force of the fiction collected here -- some of it published in MacDonald’s award-winning Eyestone -- will delight MacDonald’s fans just as it will astonish new readers. Each of the stories in All the Men Are Sleeping stands alone, but together they offer a heartrending elegy for lost loves and time-forgotten places.

About this book:

Heart of Darkness (1899), by Joseph Conrad, is a short novel about Charles Marlow’s job as an ivory transporter down the Congo River in Central Africa. This river is described to be “... a mighty big river, that you could see on the map, resembling an immense snake uncoiled, with its head in the sea, its body at rest curving afar over a vast country, and its tail lost in the depths of the land.” In the course of his commercial-agent work in Africa, the seaman Marlow becomes obsessed by Mr. Kurtz, an ivory-procurement agent, a man of established notoriety among the natives and the European colonials.

Aboard the Nellie, anchored in the River Thames near Gravesend, England, Charles Marlow tells his fellow sailors about the events that led to his appointment as captain of a river-steamboat for an ivory trading company. He describes his passage on ships to the wilderness to the Company's station, which strikes Marlow as a scene of devastation: disorganized, machinery parts here and there, periodic demolition explosions, weakened native black men who have been demoralized, in chains, literally being worked to death, and strolling behind them a white Company man in a uniform carrying a rifle.

Marlow leaves with a caravan to travel on foot some two hundred miles deeper into the wilderness to the Central Station, where the steamboat that he is to captain is based. Marlow is shocked to learn that his steamboat had been wrecked two days before his arrival. The manager explains that they needed to take the steamboat up-river because of rumours that an important station was in jeopardy and that its chief, Mr. Kurtz, was ill. Marlow describes the Company men at this station as lazy back-biting "pilgrims", fraught with envy and jealousy, all trying to gain a higher status within the Company, which in turn, would provide more personal profit; however, they sought these goals in a meaningless, ineffective and lazy manner, mixed with a sense that they were all merely waiting, while trying to stay out of harm's way. After fishing his boat out of the river, Marlow is frustrated by the months spent on repairs.

Once underway, the journey up-river to the Inner Station, Kurtz's station, takes two months to the day. On board are the manager, three or four "pilgrims" and some twenty "cannibals" enlisted as crew.

They come to rest for the night about eight miles below the Inner Station. In the morning they awake to find that they are enveloped by a thick, white fog. From the riverbank they hear a very loud cry, followed by a discordant clamour. A few hours later, as safe navigation becomes increasingly difficult, the steamboat is hit with a barrage of sticksーsmall arrowsーfrom the wilderness. The pilgrims open fire into the bush with their Winchester rifles. The native serving as helmsman gives up steering to pick up a rifle and fire it. Marlow grabs the wheel to avoid snags in the river. The helmsman is impaled by a spear and falls at Marlow's feet...
(source: Wikipedia)

A short, spellbinding novel about a WWI veteran finding a way to re-enterーand fully embraceーnormal life while spending the summer in an idyllic English village.

In J. L. Carr’s deeply charged poetic novel, Tom Birkin, a veteran of the Great War and a broken marriage, arrives in the remote Yorkshire village of Oxgodby where he is to restore a recently discovered medieval mural in the local church. Living in the bell tower, surrounded by the resplendent countryside of high summer, and laboring each day to uncover an anonymous painter’s depiction of the apocalypse, Birkin finds that he himself has been restored to a new, and hopeful, attachment to life. But summer ends, and with the work done, Birkin must leave. Now, long after, as he reflects on the passage of time and the power of art, he finds in his memories some consolation for all that has been lost.

Ruben Prien is still at work with the Project, still dreaming of altering man's fate by going back in time to adjust events... to interfere, some might say, with destiny. Once again, his conduit to that bygone era, his messenger to that lost world, is Simon Morley, the man who actually proved himself capable of traveling back and forth in time.

Rube's purpose in summoning Si back from that earlier world, where he has taken up permanent residence, is no less grand than an attempt to prevent World War I from erupting. It is ironic, therefore, that the man assigned to carry to America the papers that might help avert the Great Catastrophe travels to his meeting on board the Titanic. And it is Si's task to attempt to ensure his safe passage.
