On a brilliant day in May, in the year 1868, a gentleman was reclining at his ease on the great circular divan which at that period occupied the centre of the Salon Carr?, in the Museum of the Louvre. This commodious ottoman has since been removed, to the extreme regret of all weak-kneed lovers of the fine arts, but the gentleman in question had taken serene possession of its softest spot, and, with his head thrown back and his legs outstretched, was staring at Murillo’s beautiful moon-borne Madonna in profound enjoyment of his posture. He had removed his hat, and flung down beside him a little red guide-book and an opera-glass. The day was warm; he was heated with walking, and he repeatedly passed his handkerchief over his forehead, with a somewhat wearied gesture. And yet he was evidently not a man to whom fatigue was familiar; long, lean, and muscular, he suggested the sort of vigor that is commonly known as “toughness.”

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】The Mad Disciples of Jacob Frank: A Tale of the Demon Goddess【電子書籍】[ Barak Bassman ]

It is the early 1790s in a Poland on the verge of being partitioned into extinction by its greedy neighbors, with the Russian Empire in the lead. The Jewish false messiah Jacob Frank has recently died. Frank had led his followers in escaping persecution from the rabbinical leadership of the Jewish community by pretending to embrace Catholicism, all the while secretly adhering to his occult doctrines of redemption, black magic, and the overcoming of death, poverty, and the ravages of ageing bodies. Once the Church realized his treachery, it imprisoned Frank for more than a decade in the fortress at Czestochowa, home also to the famous painting of the Black Madonna. While a prisoner of the Church, Frank had new and greater revelations of secret powers, which he believed could vanquish decay and disease. But he was unable to wield these esoteric truths to save his flock before his own death.

With the master gone to his grave, his disciples are adrift and lost. One disciple, however, is determined to succeed where the master failed. Allying with a vain and dangerously violent Polish nobleman, this disciple will take Frank’s teachings to their ultimate limitーand reap the consequences.

≫Mukasongas m?sterverk.≪
New York Review of Books

Example in this ebook

Chapter I

When the clergyman had gone, the bride turned.

Before her was an open window before which was the open sea. In the air was a tropical languor, a savour of brine, the scent of lilies, the sound of mandolins that are far away. Below, in the garden, were masses of scarlet, high heaps of geranium blooms. A bit beyond was the Caprian blue of the San Diego Bay. There, a yacht rode, white and spacious. The yacht belonged to her husband who was beside her. She turned again and as passionately he embraced her; she coloured.

For the moment, as they stood there, they seemed so sheerly dissimilar that they might have come of alien races, from different zones. He, with his fair hair, his fair skin, his resolute and aggressive face, was typically Anglo-Saxon. She, with her delicate features, her dense black hair, and disquieting eyes, looked like a Madrilene Madonnaーone of those fascinating and slightly shocking creations of seventeenth-century art that more nearly resemble infantas serenaded by caballeros than queens of the sky. There was a deeper contrast. He appeared frankly material; she, all soul.

Leisurely she freed herself.

“One might know,” she began, then paused. A smile completed the sentence.

He smiled too.

“Yes, Leilah, one might know that however I hold you to me, I never can hold you enough.”

“And I! I could be held by you forever.”

On the door came a tap, rapid and assured. A page entered, the preoccupation of the tip in his face, in his hand a platter of letters.

The man, taking the letters, dismissed him.

“Miss Ogston,” he continued. “From your father, confound him. It is the last time he will address you in that fashion. Miss Ogston,” he repeated. “From the Silverstairs, I fancy. Gulian Verplank. There is but one for me.”

He looked at his watch. “The launch from the yacht will be here shortly.”

“When do we start?”

“Whenever you like. The Marquesas will keep. Bora-Bora will be the same whenever we get there. Onlyーー”

“Only what?”

“I am in love with you, not with hotels.”

“Let us go then. There will be a moon to-night?”

“A new one, a honeymoon, a honeymoon begun.”

“Gulian! As if it could end!”

In pronouncing the “u” in his name her mouth made the sketch of a kiss.

“You would not wish it to?” he asked.

“When I die, perhaps, and even then only to be continued hereafter. Heaven would not be heaven without you.”

She spoke slowly, with little pauses, in a manner that differed from his own mode of speech, which was quick and forceful.

Verplank turned to the letter that had been addressed to him, and which he still held. Without opening it, he tore it into long, thin strips. It was, he knew from the imprint, a communication of no importance; but, at the moment, the action seemed a reply to her remark. It served to indicate his complete indifference to everything and everyone save her only. Afterward, with a regret that was to be eternal, she wished he had done the same with hers.
Yet, pleased at the time, she smiled.

“Gulian, you do love me, but I wonder do you love me as absolutely as I love you?”

Verplank, with a gesture that was familiar to him, closed and opened a hand.

“I do not know. But while I think you cannot love me more wholly than I love you, I do know that to me you are the unique.”

Leilah moved to where he stood.

“Gulian, and you to me. You are the only one.” She moved closer. Raising her hands, she put them on his shoulders. “Tell me, shall you be long away?”

“An hour or two. Apropos, would you care to leave before dinner?”

“Yes.”

“We will dine on board, then. Is there anything in particular you would like?”

“Yes, lilies, plenty of lilies; and pineapples; and the sound of your voice.”

Lifting her hands from his shoulders to his face, she drew it to her own. Their lips met longly. With the savour of her about him, Verplank passed out.

To be continue in this ebook

No Strings Attached
Wedding invitations are supposed to bring a smile to your face, with thoughts of a happy occasion that two people would be joining in Holy matrimony, publicly declaring their love for each other. However, for Laura Lee, it was just confirmation that at thirty-three, she had spent all her time and efforts on her career and is still single.
After finding out that her ex will be attending the same wedding, Laura Lee has three days to find herself a date. In desperation, she calls on the help of her best friend Lisa, the who’s who of Nottingham’s eligible bachelors.
Discovering that Nottingham’s most rich and handsome men find her icy, Laura has to take her only option, the man she most despises, her work colleague, Adam Ford.

Learner Mum

Polly Wilkins is a successful freelance journalist slash writer. She has been living with her partner Steve in what her parents call sin for the last eight years. But, to her parent’s disappointment, there are no signs of wedding bells or the patter of tiny feet on the horizon. Why? Because Polly, is not in the least bit maternal. Can this all change after Polly and Steve have a torrid weekend looking after her nephew? Or will Polly stick to her guns and loose Steve forever?

Unexpected Blind Date

If any of Grace Worthing’s friends dared to suggest she should go on a blind date, her answer would have been, “Blind dates are so tacky; they are definitely for the desperate.” She was so over men! After her fifth Sex on the Beach cocktail, she told friends she would never have sex again, let alone have sex on a beach. Then, somewhere between her second and third tequila slammer, Grace found herself, agreeing to meet Adrian. Little did she know how interesting and unexpected her blind date would be.

Angel of Kindness

Megan Shepard was not looking forward to Christmas. Now divorced, all she had to look forward to was spending Christmas in Derbyshire, with her sixty four year old, bisexual, hippie mother, and a scrawny little sapling tree, overdressed with cheap decorations from the pound shop. However, her friends had other ideas, like taking her to Pinkie’s Night Club, their old stomping ground as teenagers. This brought back memories of rah-rah skirts, fishnets, and legwarmers dancing to Madonna, until the DJ played The Power of Love, whereupon Richie King would take her hand and lead her to the dance floor.
Seeing Richie leaning against the bar in his unforgettable Danny Zucko pose, she knows the right thing to do would be to walk in the opposite direction, yet finds herself walking straight to him, and taking the advice of her unconventional mother. Swept off her feet to the winter wonderland of Manchester’s Christmas Market, romantic walks in the snow of the Derbyshire Peak District, and fireside dinners, she has to wonder if Richie really changed, or has he something to hide?

The marriage of a well-bred Royalist lady and an illegitimate Roundhead Colonel is less a match made in heaven than a union doomed to hell. Unfortunately, Sir Robert Brandon's last will and testament leaves Venetia Clifford and Gabriel Brandon with little choice in the matter - deeply though they both resent it.
Their tempestuous relationship is reflected in the stormy events buffeting the nation as England slides inexorably into a second Civil War. Gabriel continues to serve in the New Model Army while, behind his back, Venetia engages in clandestine activities on behalf of the King; and the lives of both are further complicated when Gabriel's legitimate half-brother - to whom Venetia was formerly betrothed - returns from exile abroad.
While the Army and Parliament argue over the fate of the King, Gabriel realises that he has a dangerous anonymous enemy and Venetia finally begins to see the man rather than the Roundhead Colonel. As events gather pace, bringing the King to trial, the tangled web of danger and deceit surrounding both Gabriel and Venetia slowly tightens its grip.
Set against the compelling times which led to the execution of Charles 1, Garland of Straw is the story of a seemingly impossible love and also provides further chapters in the lives of characters previously encountered in The Black Madonna and A Splendid Defiance.

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】The Flower of The Flock (Complete)【電子書籍】[ Pierce Egan ]

A bright sunny morning, at the end of June, in busy, restless London. The overarching vault of heaven was filled with an atmosphere of golden hue. Sunshine was glowing upon cathedral turrets and upon the church spires, upon the pinnacles of lofty buildings, and the crowns of tall factory shafts. The bronzed and tarnished ball and cross of St. Paul’s, and the shaggy-crested Monument, which “like a tall bully lifts its head,” shone as if they had been newly gilded. There was sunshine upon chimney-pots and housetops, golden beams permeating the confined air in close garrets, through their narrow, half-closed windows; flooding wide streets, and illuminating pestiferous courts, where riotous hilarity sometimes, but joy never came. Sunshine blazed upon the broad and winding Thames, over whose flowing surface lazy barges dawdled, and panting river steamers raced, leaving in their sinuous paths myriads of scintillationsーand rather an unpleasant odour as well. Sunshine was on the footways, and in the roadways, and in the gutters, making mirrors of small muddy pools. Sunshine there was for the ragged and the richly dressed; for the beggar and the prince alike; for the robust and, happily, for the sickly invalid. Sunshine everywhere, making brilliant the parks and open places, and interpenetrating all the foulest recesses of this huge city. Giving light where it was rarely seen, and rousing to a glad activity the teeming life already in its first throes of daily labour. Beautiful in this, the bright sunshine! but oh, yet more enchanting in the glory with which it invested the fair face of a young girl, peering out of the upper window of a house situated in one of the City’s closest streets. She stood there, gazing heavenward, her mild blue eyes bending beneath the influence of the golden glare of sunny-waves of light, yet seeming to revel in their luxuriance as though they spoke to her in fairy language of other and happier times and places now far away. Upon the opposite side of the street, in the shop of a working goldsmith, one John Harper, there stood a youth, an apprentice to the noble art of working in gold. The beauty and the clearness of the fair morning had elevated and refreshed his youthful spirits, but ah! how much greater their exhilaration when his upturned eyes were gladdened by the sight of that beautiful young girl, whose radiant face, and delicately modelled form, were brought out in brilliant relief by the dazzling sunbeams. It seemed to him that his brightest conceptions of the beautiful, his dreamy fashionings of a faultless ideal, combined with all his native and his acquired skill, had never yet enabled him to realise “a thing of beauty” to rival the perfect excellence and marvellous charms of that young face upon which his eager eyes were now fastened. Raphael, in his rarest art-performance had not in his belief attained the sentiment of angelic purity beaming in her features, nor had Carlo Dolci, in the loveliest Madonna he ever painted, anticipated it.

Josh Donner is the American attorney. Cardinal Mondial, a Brazilian, is the ambitious Prince of the Church. Mei Chan is the exquisite and mysterious Chinese assassin. Three diametrically dissimilar people, from three different continents, all focused like powerful lasers on a central locus. The object of their intense interest in Strella, a beautiful novice who resides in a convent in Sao Paulo, Brazil. Strella is both a virgin and pregnant, and impossible dichotomy. Strella was left on the convent steps when only hours old. Raised as a child of the Church, her sheltered life within the ivy-covered walls of the convent is about to be disrupted by tidal forces powerful enough to change the course of history. In the wrong hands, controlled by unscrupulous people, Strella and her virgin-born child could easily shift the balance of power in the modern world.

The In Vitro Madonna was originally published in Europe. Ray Johnson likes to refer to his books as verbal movies. Like his two previous novels, The Jericho Compact and The Great Everlasting, The In Vitro Madonna carries the reader along a swift river of mystery and intrigue. A good novel, like a vintage wine, is to be savored and enjoyed at leisure, hopefully in front of the fireplace of life. A novel should leave a pleasing aftertaste on the palate of ones soul. Ray Johnson was a military officer and law enforcement officer and draws upon life experiences to weave credence into his spellbinding novels. His stated goal is to keep his readers wondering until the final paragraph on the final page. He achieves that goal in The In Vitro Madonna.

Edith Whartons Early Short Fiction is a collection of a number of early short stories written by the American writer and novelist Edith Wharton. Most of these stories were first published in the beginning of the twentieth century in literary magazines and periodicals such as the famous Scribners Magazine. They include The Verdict, The Reckoning, Botticellis Madonna in the Louvre, An autumn Sunset, among others. Yet, the most successful of them was probably the first in the collection entitled Kerfol. Set in Brittany, France, Kerfol centers around the person of Anne de Barrigan, a young widow who is accused of killing her husband. Anne acknowledges that her husband has been very harsh on her and that their relationship has been suffering for long. However, she tries to convince her accusers that a number of wild dogs have attacked her husband and killed him, yet her claim is found derisive as no dogs have ever been allowed in their house. Kerfol is the name of the old chateau in which the murder has taken place. The word literally means the house of madness in local dialect. Whartons story has had considerable influence on other novelists mainly in the trend of the Gothic genre and ghost stories.

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】The Unauthorised Madonna Autobiography: Test Samples Ghostwritten with Artificial Intelligence【電子書籍】[ J A Lee ]

The lack of an autobiography from one of the greatest figures in popular entertainment opens up a tantalising gap for technology to fill.
Machine intelligence is ideally suited to ghostwriting. Vast quantities of data are digested every day in order to deliver audiences over to performersーwhy not reverse this to deliver performers to their fans?
The samples in this small book were taken from test runs conducted while developing the code for creating the finished work. Curated source material was cut into sliversーsome as small as one wordーthen recombined into new narratives by using artificial intelligence. This output was then edited by hand in sympathy with its apparent direction.
The Madonna you’ll find here is a genetically spliced chimera. The introductory chapter alludes to her early life, her career, and the philosophy that drives her. The sample chapters that follow are chronological accounts that meander seamlessly between what’s unmistakably her and what could be her in an alternative reality.
If you’re buying this book as a gift, bear in mind that there are adult themes and language.

Two days subsequent to these occurrencesーand some hours after his coupe loaded with his guns and traps had rumbled away to meet Holcomb, in time for the Adirondack expressーThayor laid a note in his butler's hands with special instructions not to place it among his lady's mail until she awoke. He could not have chosen a better messenger. While originally hailing from Ireland, and while retaining some of the characteristics of his raceーhis good humor being one of themーBlakeman yet possessed that smoothness and deference so often found in an English servant. In his earlier life he had served Lord Bromley in the Indian jungle during the famine; had been second man at the country seat of the Duke of Valmoncourt at the time of the baccarat scandal, and later on had risen to the position of chief butler in the establishment of an unpopular Roumanian general. It is not to be wondered at, therefore, that he was at forty-five past master in domestic diplomacy, knowing to a detail the private history of more than a score of families, having studied them at his ease behind their chairs, or that he knew infinitely more of the world at large than did his master. Blakeman had two absorbing passionsーone was his love of shooting and the other his reverent adoration of Margaret, whom he had seen develop into womanhood, and who was his Madonna and good angel. At high noon, then, when the silver bell on Alice's night table broke the stillness of her bedroom, her French maid, Annette, entered noiselessly and slid back the soft curtains screening the bay window. She, like Blakeman, had seen much. She was, too, more self-contained in many things than the woman she served, although she had been bred in Montmartre and born in the Rue Lepic.
