Gordo - Jaime Cortez (Grove Press, Black Cat) 【

Shedding profound natural light on the inner lives of migrant workers, Jaime Cortez's debut collection ushers in a new era of American literature that gives voice to a marginalized generation of migrant workers in the West. The first-ever collection of short stories by Jaime Cortez, Gordo is set in a migrant workers camp near Watsonville, California in the 1970s. A young, probably gay, boy named Gordo puts on a wrestler's mask and throws fists with a boy in the neighborhood, fighting his own tears as he tries to grow into the idea of manhood so imposed on him by his father. As he comes of age, Gordo learns about sex, watches his father's drunken fights, and discovers even his own documented Mexican-American parents are wary of illegal migrants. Fat Cookie, high schooler and resident artist, uses tiny library pencils to draw huge murals of graffiti flowers along the camp's blank walls, the words "CHICANO POWER" boldly lettered across, until she runs away from home one day with her mother's boyfriend, Manny, and steals her mother's Panasonic radio for a final dance competition among the camp kids before she disappears. And then there are Los Tigres, the perfect pair of twins so dark they look like indios, Pepito and Manuel, who show up at Gyrich Farms every season without fail. Los Tigres, champion drinkers, end up assaulting each other in a drunken brawl, until one of them is rushed to the emergency room still slumped in an upholstered chair tied to the back of a pick-up truck. These scenes from Steinbeck Country seen so intimately from within are full of humor, family drama, and a sweet frankness about serious matters - who belongs to America and how are they treated? How does one learn decency, when laborers, grown adults, must fear for their lives and livelihoods as they try to do everything to bring home a paycheck? Written with balance and poise, Cortez braids together elegant and inviting stories about life on a Califo

A seismic shift in Hollywood’s power structure occurred during the 1980s. Gone were the moguls and founding fathers of the motion picture industry ー Jack L. Warner, Louis B. Mayer, Carl Laemmle, Samuel Goldwyn, and Darryl Zanuck. The studios were being taken over by technological giants such as Sony and Panasonic, and the new owners turned to lawyers and talent agents to run their newly obtained properties. In 1982, an aspiring young screenwriter, Nick Caggiano, moves from the Bronx to Los Angeles, hoping to find work in the industry. At a famous bar and restaurant on the Sunset Strip one night, he encounters a wealthy young woman named Nicole. What transpires between them creates a riptide of greed, corruption, and perversion that drags Nick through the underbelly of the Hollywood establishment, upending his life and challenging his moral fabric and his sense of self.

Back to Yesterday, A Memoir Snippets of Hoboken 'then'...Summers at the Jersey Shore, a Kid Named Frank【電子書籍】[ Bunny Amatucci ]

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】Back to Yesterday, A Memoir Snippets of Hoboken 'then'...Summers at the Jersey Shore, a Kid Named Frank【電子書籍】[ Bunny Amatucci ]

A memoir which shows how my large Italian interacted with a young Frank Sinatra and his mother, Dolly. My father who sang with a group called the Three Flashes, consisting of him and two other friends took Frank in on the strong suggestion of Dolly. When Major Bowes discovered them, he changed the name of the group to the Hoboken Four and the story shows what happened to four young men. I pick the book up from that time, showing how my dad met my mother, how my father began to drink after I was born along with my brother. Being raised in a tenement building with a toilet in the hall, shared between two families (fortunately related to us) it goes to how I met my husband, married and had two boys by the time I was 19 years old. The fact that I was very much like my father, I was restless and needed to do other things. It soon become an ongoing story of how I went to varius schools for hairdressing, dog grooming, real estate, owned a restaurant and a boarding home for senior citizens in which I handled all the cooking and interaction with 14 older people whose families neglected them. After having my third child by the time I was 35, I tell how difficult it was to start over again as a newborn's mother and the challenges of it all. After selling the business, I took a position in the Japanese company known as Panasonic. I tell of how my Japenese boss took me under his wing and was insrumental in my being successful and receiving promotions. Finally, after surviving lung cancer, I retired from work and worked instead, on getting my health back. Now facing old age, with the insistence from my children, I decided to get involved with the one thing that came so easy to me...writiing. This is the story of how we evolve and where we eventually wind up.
