Rainy Lake House Twilight of Empire on the Northern Frontier【電子書籍】[ Theodore Catton ]

"Focuses on three men from vastly different backgrounds and serves as a vehicle for exploring the rigors of the fur trade . . . lyrical and transcendent." ー American Historical Review
In September 1823, three men met at Rainy Lake House, a Hudson's Bay Company trading post near the Boundary Waters. Dr. John McLoughlin, the proprietor of Rainy Lake House, was in charge of the borderlands west of Lake Superior, where he was tasked with opposing the petty traders who operated out of US territory. Major Stephen H. Long, an officer in the US Army Topographical Engineers, was on an expedition to explore the wooded borderlands west of Lake Superior and the northern prairies from the upper Mississippi to the forty-ninth parallel. John Tanner, a white man living among the Ojibwa nation, arrived in search of his missing daughters, who, Tanner believed, were at risk of being raped by the white traders holding them captive at a nearby fort.
Drawing on their combined experiences, Theodore Catton creates a vivid depiction of the beautiful and dangerous northern frontier from a collision of vantage points: American, British, and Indigenous; imperial, capital, and labor; explorer, trader, and hunter. At the center of this history is the deeply personal story of John Tanner's search for kinship: first among his adopted Ojibwa nation; then in the search for his white family of origin; and finally in his quest for custody of his multiracial children.
"Written with clarity and energy, this book tells its story through the remarkable device of a triple biography." ーGregory Evans Dowd, author of Groundless

Ship of Ghosts The Story of the USS Houston, FDR's Legendary Lost Cruiser, and the Epic Saga ofHer Survivors【電子書籍】[ James D. Hornfischer ]

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】Ship of Ghosts The Story of the USS Houston, FDR's Legendary Lost Cruiser, and the Epic Saga ofHer Survivors【電子書籍】[ James D. Hornfischer ]

NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER

"Son, we’re going to Hell."

The navigator of the USS Houston confided these prophetic words to a young officer as he and his captain charted a course into U.S. naval legend. Renowned as FDR’s favorite warship, the cruiser USS Houston was a prize target trapped in the far Pacific after Pearl Harbor. Without hope of reinforcement, her crew faced a superior Japanese force ruthlessly committed to total conquest. It wasn’t a fair fight, but the men of the Houston would wage it to the death.

Hornfischer brings to life the awesome terror of nighttime naval battles that turned decks into strobe-lit slaughterhouses, the deadly rain of fire from Japanese bombers, and the almost superhuman effort of the crew as they miraculously escaped disaster again and again?until their luck ran out during a daring action in Sunda Strait. There, hopelessly outnumbered, the Houston was finally sunk and its survivors taken prisoner. For more than three years their fate would be a mystery to families waiting at home.

In the brutal privation of jungle POW camps dubiously immortalized in such films as The Bridge on the River Kwai, the war continued for the men of the Houstonーa life-and-death struggle to survive forced labor, starvation, disease, and psychological torture. Here is the gritty, unvarnished story of the infamous Burma?Thailand Death Railway glamorized by Hollywood, but which in reality mercilessly reduced men to little more than animals, who fought back against their dehumanization with dignity, ingenuity, sabotage, will?powerーand the undying faith that their country would prevail.

Using journals and letters, rare historical documents, including testimony from postwar Japanese war crimes tribunals, and the eyewitness accounts of Houston’s survivors, James Hornfischer has crafted an account of human valor so riveting and awe-inspiring, it’s easy to forget that every single word is true.

BONUS: This edition contains an excerpt from James D. Hornfischer's Neptune's Inferno.

Medina Brown is the daughter of an American man and a Turkish woman. Born in her namesake city, she grows up in the fictional town of Joseph, Illinois, an hour east of St. Louis, two west of Indianapolis. She meets Kevin Foster in kindergarten. Immediately best friends, they grow up together. He lives two blocks down. They're part of each other's families. He becomes her biographer.

Kevin records: She was extraordinary, superior, and I was... an adjunct, a plus one? No, that's not fair. She was driving and I was her passenger. That's better. She did love me too. How would she describe her feelings, describe me, if she were writing this?

Medina is energetic, attractive, participatory, electable. Where she looks, others gaze; where she goes, they charge; where she works, they labor. Her actions first help others, first share resources, first raise the less fortunate to her level. She makes many friends, some enemies. Her popularity is vast, not universal.

Twenty-first century politics shape their lives ? bullies, violence, internet accusers, and homophobic trolls, who insist, despite contrary evidence, Kevin is gay.

The book, emblematic of these messy and disheartening times, explores gender dynamics and hate, while building to multiple conclusions: the consummation of Medina's and Kevin's relationship; the pinnacle of her fame and popularity; the long-brewing clash with increasingly-racist (and sexist) detractors; and the culmination of her political campaign.

By the end, you'll find yourself hoping your search engine can pull Joseph out of the Southern Illinois landscape. Maybe a drive… Maybe on August 10th. Yeah, Roosevelt Square on Medina Brown Day. I'm there!

This is a full-blooded, old-school novel, meaty and memorable, intensifying as the account progresses toward its conclusion. Long after you've closed the cover, you'll find yourself wondering about the culture you live in.

Eliza and the Raptor【電子書籍】[ t'Sade ]

The only crime Third Lieutenant Eliza committed was stealing a few precious minutes of her patrol to pleasure herself. On the FCM Quantor Generation Ship, where reproduction occurred in test tubes and an active libido was a crime, she was found guilty of treason. Her superior officer sentenced her to a life of hard labor in the mines with a threat of execution if she touched herself even once more.

In the midst of her personal hell, salvation came when they pulled her from the depths of the asteroid ship and assigned her to aid the newly encountered sentient dinosaurs and their massive fleet of war ships. Unspoken was the hopes that she would die while spying and the FCM would use her death to steal the fleet's technology.

No one could expect that Fleet Master Kraken would see something else in the former prisoner. She not only appealed to his joy of Machiavellian plots, but also to his more primal lusts. And Kraken wasn't opposed to exploring beyond his own species and satisfying his own curiosity of what humans did when they stole a few moments of pleasure.

Eliza and the Raptor is a sci-fi set in a rich universe of pulp science, intellectual eroticism, and hope that there is always a chance to discover love.

African Pride and the German Guide Petty Octopus Got Crucified【電子書籍】[ Koushik Castle ]

Revolutionary Poetry Book "African Pride and the German Guide" Exposes Present Forms of Racial Discrimination A new poetry book entitled African Pride and the German Guide: Petty Octopus Got Crucified by Koushik Castle released, and will most certainly cause an uproar. Castle, who is a well-known Indian poet, wrote the book in a very realistic and strikingly contemporary voice - as it controversially exposes the exploitation of Africans as well as African Americans by policy makers of developed and undeveloped countries. Gandhi started his movement against color discrimination in South Africa more than 100 years ago and now Castle is again trying to draw the attention of people towards current and prevalent color discrimination in various nations. For instance, in the book, Castle statistically describes how consumerism supports modern day slavery in the forms of child labor and child militancy in Africa. Some of the poems are piercing pieces of social commentary, and others are very path breaking as they shockingly reveal that people are hiding the real factors when they blame the mismanagement of African countries for their problems. In one poem entitled 'Rwandan Coffee', Castle rhythmically reveals the little-known fact that it was American Coffee Middlemen who were responsible for hunger and militancy in Rwanda during the decade of the nineties. In poems like 'Gold Coins of Congo' and 'Diamond of Darkness', readers will have a first hand experience of how children are exploited in gold mines of Congo and diamond fields in Sierra Leone. In poems like 'Don't Color the Prison', 'West Coast Vs East Coast' and 'Hip Hop Shady', Castle portraits contemporary African American characters and describes their problems and apathy of government administration towards them and deflates collective euphoria of equality and change promised to them. All of the poems are so lyrical that it is expected that many of them will be adapted into hip hop and rock songs. Castle also poetically describes the fairness obsession in the world's largest democratic country, India - where many of the Indian people still consider being light-skinned to be better than dark skinned. By exploiting this obsession, global cream companies are generating wealth by selling whitening creams. A staunch supporter of women rights, Castle's book also features poems like 'Russian Beauty' - which is a heart touching description of how women are trafficked in today's modern world and are forced to sell their bodies. 'Souls of Girls' exposes the cruel mindsets of people who kill their daughters even before they are born by using techniques like ultrasound. 'Nazi Minds', 'Precious', and 'Hello Mr. Prince and 'Petty Octopus' are definitely going to spark controversy as the poet boldly gives the psychological insights of the people who still feel they are superior to others. Poems like 'Precious' and 'Hello Mr. Prince openly criticize those who make comments on the physical appearances of others and the way they dress. Any poetry book is incomplete without romance, so Castle has written eternal romantic poems like 'Romantic Isle' and 'Folded Pages' as well as poems like 'Teen Sins' and 'Apologies' - which are inspired by modern day youth lifestyle. He didn't forget to write futuristic poems like 'Digital Games', 'Beyond Fifth Dimension', 'Prisoner of Binary' - which really gives a look in to the world's future.

Brandeis: A Free Man’s Life【電子書籍】[ Alpheus Thomas Mason ]

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】Brandeis: A Free Man’s Life【電子書籍】[ Alpheus Thomas Mason ]

“There can be no question that [*Brandeis: A Free Man’s Life*] is a triumph of research and organization, clear, precise and comprehensive. Mr. Mason has quoted copiously from Brandeis’ speeches, letters and judicial opinions. He has delved deeply into corporation finances and legal technicalities. One could not reasonably ask for more information about Brandeis than Mr. Mason has assembled...” ー Orville Prescott,?***The New York Times***

“Professor Mason has written more than an authoritative record and interpretation of what he calls in his suggestive subtitle ‘A Free Man’s Life.’ This stimulating, highly readable book is also a chronicle of the processes of American democracy at work. This is a biography with a larger meaning ー on all counts, it deserves a wide audience.” ー Harvey Bresler,?***The New York Times***

“In a great biography the author has done full justice to a great man ー and given it a symbolism that makes it virtually a composite of American social history during a half century. Rooted in years of study, evidenced by previous publications on Brandeis, the biographer reveals to his readers Louis Brandeis, the people’s lawyer who became a Justice of the Supreme Court. He has done a magnificent job, covering every phase of his life, with main focus on his professional and public service, but with enough of his personal life, enough of his friends ー and his enemies ー and the personalities who crossed his path, enough of anecdote and minor incident, to give the book- and its subject ー lasting vitality.” ー?***Kirkus Reviews***

“[Brandeis’] life, as Professor Mason recounts it, was an unending series of causes and campaigns. He threw himself into them with gusto. He said of himself that he ‘would rather fight than eat.’... [Brandeis] was indeed a great man, as Mr. Mason’s biography makes clear. It is primarily a public and political biography; the intimate man is implied rather than described. But Professor Mason within the limits he has set has done a splendid job of research; he has told the story in great detail with care, precision, and detachment... He has done well to quote copiously from Brandeis who spoke and wrote with verve and with an eye to education and action.” ー Louis L. Jaffe, University of Chicago Law Review

“[A] superior, full-length biography... [Brandeis] was the arch foe of monopoly in industry, stood out against the closed shop in labor relations, and had no faith in socialism. Always, as Professor Mason stresses again and again, his method was to achieve complete mastery of the facts in relation to any problem in which he became interested and then to promote what he deemed to be sound solutions, enlisting aid in every conceivable quarter; keeping up a stream of advocacy and comment, signed and unsigned; stimulating others to do likewise; and giving of his substance as well as of his time and energy to almost every cause he attacked-leaving nothing to chance and no stone unturned. All this as a private citizen, while practicing law in the city of Boston... All hail... to Professor Mason for presenting us with this full length history of the embodiment of a living ideal. Into it have gone exhaustive study of the correspondence and documents and firsthand knowledge of the subject. This book will undoubtedly be widely read, as it should be; and as it is read, the Brandeis influence will be strengthened and prolonged in American life. Such a work is a major contribution to society, as well as a source of unending pleasure to the reader.”

2015 ISHS Superior Achievement Award

What constitutes Lincoln’s political greatness as a statesman? As a great leader, he saved the Union, presided over the end of slavery, and helped to pave the way for an interracial democracy. His great speeches provide enduring wisdom about human equality, democracy, free labor, and free society. Joseph R. Fornieri contends that Lincoln’s political genius is best understood in terms of a philosophical statesmanship that united greatness of thought and action, one that combined theory and practice. This philosophical statesmanship, Fornieri argues, can best be understood in terms of six dimensions of political leadership: wisdom, prudence, duty, magnanimity, rhetoric, and patriotism. Drawing on insights from history, politics, and philosophy, Fornieri tackles the question of how Lincoln’s statesmanship displayed each of these crucial elements.

Providing an accessible framework for understanding Lincoln’s statesmanship, this thoughtful study examines the sixteenth president’s political leadership in terms of the traditional moral vision of statecraft as understood by epic political philosophers such as Aristotle and St. Thomas Aquinas. Fornieri contends that Lincoln’s character is best understood in terms of Aquinas’s understanding of magnanimity or greatness of soul, the crowning virtue of statesmanship. True political greatness, as embodied by Lincoln, involves both humility and sacrificial service for the common good. The enduring wisdom and timeless teachings of these great thinkers, Fornieri shows, can lead to a deeper appreciation of statesmanship and of its embodiment in Abraham Lincoln.

With the great philosophers and books of western civilization as his guide, Fornieri demonstrates the important contribution of normative political philosophy to an understanding of our sixteenth president. Informed by political theory that draws on the classics in revealing the timelessness of Lincoln’s example, his interdisciplinary study offers profound insights for anyone interested in the nature of leadership, statesmanship, political philosophy, political ethics, political history, and constitutional law.

Lavished with praise at the time of its 1925 publication, Leonard Cline's phantasmagoric God Head is being republished so a new generation of readers can marvel at its dark magic. Cline's mesmerizing debut follows the journey of Paulus Kempf, a fugitive labor agitator who takes refuge with a colony of Finns on the remote shores of Lake Superior in the upper peninsula of Michigan. Kempf, a former surgeon, poet, writer, sculptor, and hyper-intellectual, is at first deeply impressed by the folklore and traditions of the quiet, gentle Finns, not to mention their generosity and hospitality. But he soon begins to play upon their superstitions and exploits their kindness through the power of his cunning and imagination, manipulating them into seeing him as a kind of a god.

As Cline's novel hurtles toward its unforgettable climax, Kempf's capacity for compassion or mercy swiftly falls to the wayside as he seduces his host's wife and then murders the man in cold blood. Soon thereafter he carves a giant God Head into the side of a nearby mountainside, which the villagers look upon with awe and fear, held in the thrall of Kempf's mysterious intimations of its malicious power. Having achieved complete domination over the Finns, Kempf ultimately tires of their gullibility and returns to civilization, his quest for self-mastery complete.

God Head's descent into the dark void of the human heart will thrill modern readers who are sure to cherish this lost literary artifact from the shadow canon of American fiction.

THE NORTH SHALL RISE AGAIN!

When Avram became King of Detina, he declared he intended to liberate the blond serfs from their ties to the land. This noble assertion immediately plunged the kingdom into a civil war that would prove long and bloody, and set brother against brother. The northern provinces, dependent on their serf's labor, seceded, choosing Avram's cousin, Grand Duke Geoffrey, as their king. To save the kingdom, Avram sent armies clad in gray against the slave-holding North, battling Geoffrey's army, arrayed in blue.

Though King Avram held more land and wealth than Geoffrey, Geoffrey's men were better soldiers and the North had better and more powerful wizards. The Poisoned Table A Novel【電子書籍】[ Diane Michael Cantor ]

THE POISONED TABLE portrays a passionate rivalry between fictional actress Isabel Graves and real-life Shakespearian stage sensation Frances Anne “Fanny” Kemble. In this tale of ambition, romance, and betrayal, Graves harbors early resentment, convinced that Kemble’s family theatre connections assured Fanny’s selection for the lead role in Romeo and Juliet despite Isabel’s superior beauty and talent. The novel traces their unconnected adventures and acting careers in the Old and New Worlds, as well as their introduction to the horrors of American slavery and to romance with one of the wealthiest men in America, Pierce Butler, owner of Georgia cotton and rice plantations and master of more than 800 slaves. Kemble, an ardent abolitionist, falls in love with Butler and marries him before she discovers his wealth derives soley from slave labor. Though glad to be separated from plantation life at her husband’s Philadelphia home, Kemble agrees to accompany him on his annual visit to inspect his Georgia investments. Butler assures his wife her apprehensions about slavery will be assuaged once she sees firsthand its humane daily operation. Instead, she is sickened and chronicles her visit in Journal of a Residence on a Georgian Plantation in 1838-1839. This account, published in England in 1863, is sometimes credited with dissuading Britain from aiding the Confederacy. Within the novel is a play written by Graves’ lover. Set on a slave plantation, the plot portrays a dinner at the master’s table and the poisonous conditions which produce its bounty, resulting in an attempted murder. In the controversy following this play’s opening night, Kemble and Graves are again at odds, and their rivalry continues as they change places on the stage of theatre and of life.

La responsabilidad ?tica en el ministerio sacerdotal.

American Woman's Home: Principles of Domestic Science; Being a Guide to the Formation and Maintenance of Economical, Healthful, Beautiful, and Christian Homes【電子書籍】[ Catharine Esther Beecher ]

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】American Woman's Home: Principles of Domestic Science; Being a Guide to the Formation and Maintenance of Economical, Healthful, Beautiful, and Christian Homes【電子書籍】[ Catharine Esther Beecher ]

The authors of this volume, while they sympathize with every honest effort to relieve the disabilities and sufferings of their sex, are confident that the chief cause of these evils is the fact that the honor and duties of the family state are not duly appreciated, that women are not trained for these duties as men are trained for their trades and professions, and that, as the consequence, family labor is poorly done, poorly paid, and regarded as menial and disgraceful. To be the nurse of young children, a cook, or a housemaid, is regarded as the lowest and last resort of poverty, and one which no woman of culture and position can assume without loss of caste and respectability. It is the aim of this volume to elevate both the honor and the remuneration of all the employments that sustain the many difficult and sacred duties of the family state, and thus to render each department of woman's true profession as much desired and respected as are the most honored professions of men. When the other sex are to be instructed in law, medicine, or divinity, they are favored with numerous institutions richly endowed, with teachers of the highest talents and acquirements, with extensive libraries, and abundant and costly apparatus. With such advantages they devote nearly ten of the best years of life to preparing themselves for their profession; and to secure the public from unqualified members of these professions, none can enter them until examined by a competent body, who certify to their due preparation for their duties. Woman's profession embraces the care and nursing of the body in the critical periods of infancy and sickness, the training of the human mind in the most impressible period of childhood, the instruction and control of servants, and most of the government and economies of the family state. These duties of woman are as sacred and important as any ordained to man; and yet no such advantages for preparation have been accorded to her, nor is there any qualified body to certify the public that a woman is duly prepared to give proper instruction in her profession. This unfortunate want, and also the questions frequently asked concerning the domestic qualifications of both the authors of this work, who have formerly written upon such topics, make it needful to give some account of the advantages they have enjoyed in preparation for the important office assumed as teachers of woman's domestic duties. The sister whose name is subscribed is the eldest of nine children by her own mother, and of four by her step-mother; and having a natural love for children, she found it a pleasure as well as a duty to aid in the care of infancy and childhood. At sixteen, she was deprived of a mother, who was remarkable not only for intelligence and culture, but for a natural taste and skill in domestic handicraft. Her place was awhile filled by an aunt remarkable for her habits of neatness and order, and especially for her economy. She was, in the course of time, replaced by a stepmother, who had been accustomed to a superior style of housekeeping, and was an expert in all departments of domestic administration.

The Great American Pie Company【電子書籍】[ Ellis Parker Butler ]

If you take a pie and cut it in two, the track of your knife will represent the course of Mud River through the town of Gloning, and that part of the pie to the left of your knife will be the East Side, while the part to the right will be the West Side. Away out on the edge of the pie, where the town fritters away into the fields and shanties on the East Side, dwells Mrs. Deacon, and a fatter, better-natured creature never trod the crust of the earth or made the crust of a pie. Being in reduced circumstances, owing to the inability of Mr. Deacon to appreciate the beneficial effects of work, Mrs. Deacon turned her famous baking ability to account, and in a small way began selling her excellent homemade pies to those who liked a superior article. In time Mrs. Deacon established a considerable trade among the people of Gloning, and Mr. Deacon was wrested from his customary seat on the back steps to make daily delivery trips with the Deacon home-made pies. Ephraim Deacon was a deep thinker and philosopher. He was above his environment, or at least he felt so, and while waiting for opportunity to approach and give his talents full vent he scorned labor. So he sat around a good deal, and jawed a good deal, and smoked. But if you will return to your plate of Gloning you will see on the pie, far over on the West Side, where the scallops lap over the edge of the plate, a little spot that is burned a bit too brown. This is the home of Mrs. Phineas Doolittle, as base and servile an imitator as ever infringed on another person's monopoly. For, seeing and hearing of the success of Mrs. Deacon's pies, Mrs. Doolittle put a few extra pieces of hickory in her stove, got out her rolling-pin, and became a competitor, even to making Mr. Doolittle deliver her pies. The Deacon pies had sold readily at ten cents; three for a quarter. The Doolittle pie entered the field at eight cents; three for twenty cents. Mrs. Deacon stood this as long as possible, and then she decided to stand it no longerーunless she had to. "Eph, you good-for-nothin' lazy animal," she remarked to her husband one morning, as she started him on his rounds, "if you was a man, I'd send you over to talk to that Doolittle woman; but you ain't, so it ain't no use sendin' you. But if you meet up with that lazy, good-for-nothin' husband of hers, you give him a piece o' my mind, an' let him know what I think o' them what comes stealin' away my business, an' breakin' down prices, which I don't wonder at, her pies not bein' in the same class as mine, as everybody knows. If you was any good, you'd mash his head in for him, just to show her what I think of them. But there! Like as not, if you do catch up with him, you two will sit an' gossip like two old grannies, which is all you are good for, either of you."

The Elect Lady【電子書籍】[ George MacDonald ]

LANDLORD'S DAUGHTER AND TENANT'S SON. In a kitchen of moderate size, flagged with slate, humble in its appointments, yet looking scarcely that of a farmhouseーfor there were utensils about it indicating necessities more artificial than usually grow upon a farmーwith the corner of a white deal table between them, sat two young people evidently different in rank, and meeting upon no level of friendship. The young woman held in her hand a paper, which seemed the subject of their conversation. She was about four- or five-and-twenty, well grown and not ungraceful, with dark hair, dark hazel eyes, and rather large, handsome features, full of intelligence, but a little hard, and not a little regnantーas such features must be, except after prolonged influence of a heart potent in self-subjugation. As to her social expression, it was a mingling of the gentlewoman of education, and the farmer's daughter supreme over the household and its share in the labor of production. As to the young man, it would have required a deeper-seeing eye than falls to the lot of most observers, not to take him for a weaker nature than the young woman; and the deference he showed her as the superior, would have enhanced the difficulty of a true judgment. He was tall and thin, but plainly in fine health; had a good forehead, and a clear hazel eye, not overlarge or prominent, but full of light; a firm mouth, with a curious smile; a sun-burned complexion; and a habit when perplexed of pinching his upper lip between his finger and thumb, which at the present moment he was unconsciously indulging. He was the son of a small farmerーin what part of Scotland is of little consequenceーand his companion for the moment was the daughter of the laird. "I have glanced over the poem," said the lady, "and it seems to me quite up to the average of what you see in print." "Would that be reason for printing it, ma'am?" asked the man, with amused smile

The Story of Norway【電子書籍】[ Hjalmar Hjorth Boyesen ]

The Norsemen are a Germanic race, and belong, accordingly, to the great Aryan family. Their next of kin are the Swedes and Danes. Their original home was Asia, and probably that part of Asia which the ancients called Bactria, near the sources of the rivers Oxus and Jaxartes. Not only the Norsemen are supposed to have come from this region, but the ancestors of all the Aryan nations which now inhabit the greater portion of the civilized world. Among the first to leave this cradle of nations were the tribes which settled upon the eastern islands and peninsulas of the Mediterranean, and, under the name of Hellenes, developed, long before the Christian era, an art and a literature which are, in some respects, yet unrivalled. The early Italic tribes, from which sprung in time the world-empire of Rome, trace their descent from the same ancestry; as do also the Kelts, who in ancient times inhabited England, Ireland, and France; the Slavs who settled in the present Russia, Bohemia, and the northern Turkish provinces; and the Germans, who occupied the great central regions of the European continent. Among Asiatic nations, the Iranians inhabiting Persia, and the Hindoos in India, have Aryan blood. It seems almost incredible that persons differing so widely in appearance, habits, and disposition, as, for instance, a Hindoo and an Englishman, should, if you go sufficiently far back, have the same ancestry. And yet there cannot be the slightest doubt that such is the case. The question, then, naturally arises: "If they were once alike, what can have made them so different?" And the answer is: "The climate, the soil, and the general character of the countries in which they settled." The country from which the first Aryans emigrated was mountainous, with fertile valleys, and an even, temperate climate. There was no excessive heat to make men drowsy and indolent, nor excessive cold to stunt them in their growth and paralyze their energies. The earth did not, as in the tropics, produce a luxurious vegetation which would support the inhabitants without labor, but it offered sustenance to herds of cattle which, with the proper care, would supply the simple needs of primitive men. The race, thus situated, progressed physically as well as mentally, until it became superior to all the tribes inhabiting the neighboring regions. War followed, in which the weaker succumbed. The Aryans, increasing rapidly in numbers, took possession of the conquered territories, enslaved the indigenous population, or drove it back into localities where the conditions of life were less favorable. It is not positively known when the first migration on a large scale took place; but some scholars have supposed that the Hindoos separated from the parent race as early as 1500 B.C. The dates of the Greek, Italic, Keltic, and Slavic migrations are likewise uncertain, and the period which has been fixed upon for the Aryan occupation of Germany is also conjectural. The same uncertainty prevails regarding the earliest history of the Scandinavian tribes; although there is a strong probability that their invasion of the countries which they now inhabit must have taken place during the second century preceding the Christian era. It is not unlikely that they left their Asiatic home simultaneously with the Germans, with whom they were then almost, if not entirely, identical, and that their conquering hordes spread northward, subduing the Finns and Lapps, whom they found in possession of the land, partly exterminating them, partly forcing them up into the barren mountains of the extreme North.

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】The Find of a Thousand Lifetimes The Story of the Gorto Site Discovery【電子書籍】[ James Robert Paquette ]

James Robert Paquette is a native son of the Upper Peninsula of Michigan and a 1974 Magna Cum Laude graduate of Northern Michigan University. Often times described as a “true modern-day Renaissance man,” Paquette’s passions are many. He is a successful freelance outdoor writer and photographer, an award winning labor journalist and editor, and the author of numerous published articles on relic and treasure hunting. He is an honored regional historian who has authored many news reports and historical articles for various local and regional media publications. Paquette is also a much sought after public speaker, and has provided frequent lectures and educational programs at universities, local schools, historical societies, and many other organizations. His greatest passion, however, is prehistoric archaeology. A self-taught avocational archaeologist, Paquette has worked on numerous professional archaeological site surveys and excavations, including the historic 1986-87 Deer Lake Gorto Site project. Recognized as one of the preeminent authorities on Late Paleo-Indian adaptations in the region, he has co-authored and published three major research reports on Great Lakes Late Paleo-Indian archaeology. Since 1984, Paquette has been conducting a “personal” ongoing archaeological field survey in the central U.P. for the purpose of locating, documenting, and preserving prehistoric Native American sites and artifacts. In the process of uncovering dozens of ancient sites in the rugged highlands of Marquette County, Paquette has documented the earliest archaeological evidence of human occupation in Michigan’s Lake Superior country. This treasured evidence provided Paquette with the necessary data that enabled him to prove that ancient Paleo-Indian peoples lived and hunted deep in the heart of the Upper Peninsula near the end of last Ice Age, perhaps some 12,000 years ago.
