The Black World. The unseen Reality【電子書籍】[ Udo Reitter ]

The unseen Reality【電子書籍】[ Udo Reitter ]

In July 1994, almost thirty years ago, something happened that could have changed the human perception of our world and our position in the universe forever - an event so powerful and unimaginable that it threatened to shake the very foundations of our knowledge, our history and our future. That summer month, a gigantic object, larger than the Earth, suddenly became visible. It suddenly appeared near the planet Jupiter, as if it had been hiding in the shadows of the cosmos until then. This object - which I can only refer to as the "Black World" - appears in our reality like a predator moving from the darkness of night into the bright lights of an alien realm.

Motivic and Diophantine Aspects LMS-CMI Research School, London, July 2018【電子書籍】

This book provides an introduction to state-of-the-art applications of homotopy theory to arithmetic geometry.

The contributions to this volume are based on original lectures by leading researchers at the LMS-CMI Research School on ‘Homotopy Theory and Arithmetic Geometry - Motivic and Diophantine Aspects’ and the Nelder Fellow Lecturer Series, which both took place at Imperial College London in the summer of 2018. The contribution by Brazelton, based on the lectures by Wickelgren, provides an introduction to arithmetic enumerative geometry, the notes of Cisinski present motivic sheaves and new cohomological methods for intersection theory, and Schlank’s contribution gives an overview of the use of ?tale homotopy theory for obstructions to the existence of rational points on algebraic varieties. Finally, the article by Asok and ?stv?r, based in part on the Nelder Fellow lecture series by ?stv?r, gives a survey of the interplay between motivic homotopy theory and affine algebraic geometry, with a focus on contractible algebraic varieties.

Now a major trend in arithmetic geometry, this volume offers a detailed guide to the fascinating circle of recent applications of homotopy theory to number theory. It will be invaluable to research students entering the field, as well as postdoctoral and more established researchers.

Introduction

The weasel's agility and speed take it in and out of retreats, over obstacles and across open places in amazingly rapid fashion and are responsible for the animal's actions being described as "quick as a flash." The common long-tailed weasel of the United States measures approximately a foot and a half in length, of which the tail comprises a third; but the round, slender body is scarcely more than an inch and a half in diameter. Brown above and whitish below in summer dress, the animal is sleek as well as lithe and graceful. It is easy to understand, therefore, why the Bavarian name Sch?nthierlein (pretty little creature) and the Italian name donnola (little lady) were bestowed upon it. The Spanish name is comadreja (godmother).
In the winter, in temperate and northern regions, the coat becomes pure white except for the black tail-tip. In this dress the correct name for the animal is ermine, a mammal whose fur is known to all and justly esteemed, especially for its luster in artificial light, where it is scarcely excelled in enhancing the beauty of gems and their feminine wearers.

In relation to its weight, the weasel is thought to be unsurpassed, and perhaps it is unequalled among mammals, in the effectiveness with which it exercises its carnivorous heritage; it kills with speed and strength a wide variety of animals including many much larger than itself; and it has been known to attack even man himself when he stood between the weasel and its intended prey. In structure and temperament it is so highly specialized for offense that, when opportunity affords, it sometimes kills, for storage in its larder, far more than enough to meet its immediate needs. After speaking of this tendency, Elliott Coues (1877:129) has said:
[8]
"A glance at the physiognomy of the weasels would suffice to betray their character. The teeth are almost of the highest known raptorial character; the jaws are worked by enormous masses of muscles covering all the side of the skull. The forehead is low and the nose is sharp; the eyes are small, penetrating, cunning, and glitter with an angry green light. There is something peculiar, moreover, in the way that this fierce face surmounts a body extraordinarily wiry, lithe, and muscular. It ends in a remarkable long and slender neck in such a way that it may be held at right angle with the axis of the latter. When the creature is glancing around, with the neck stretched up, and flat triangular head bent forward, swaying from one side to the other, we catch the likeness in a momentーit is the image of a serpent." Although Coues' colorful description more closely links the weasel with the symbol of evil than pleases me, his description does emphasize the raptorial character of the weasel.

Even though most weasels are intractable as pets, they have a value to man, as, for instance, when he is plagued by mice. In a field where mice rodents thereabouts are almost exterminated in an area two or three hundred yards across; in this way the weasel acts as a control, locally, as and other small rodents are so abundant as to damage cultivated crops, the weasel is the farmer's best friend. A weasel may inhabit one den until the well as a check more widely, on the increase in size of populations of kinds of rodents upon which it preys.

Contents:

Introduction 7
Paleontological History 10
Skeleton and Dentition 12
Disparity in Numbers of Males and Females 19
Materials, Acknowledgments and Methods 21
Variation 24
Variation with Age 24
Secondary Sexual Variation 26
Individual Variation 28
Seasonal Variation 30
Variation in Coloration and Molt 30
Variations of Taxonomic Worth 44
Distribution and Speciation 54
History of Classification 69
Chronological List (annotated) of Specific and Subspecific Names Applied to American Weasels 71
Check-List of American Species and Subspecies of the Genus Mustela 81

Advances in Research on Neurodegeneration Volume 7【

We organized the Seventh International Winter Conference on Neurodegeneration and Neuroinflammation in a small town of Karuizawa in Nagano Prefecture in Japan on January 20 to 22, 1999. Karuizawa is a nice summer as well as winter resort close to the place for winter Olympic game in the year of 1998. Over 40 scientists gathered together and made hot discussion. Neurodegeneration and neuroinflammation are two major and important neurologic disorders, in which satisfactory neuroprotective and neurorestorative treatment is not available yet. For this purpose, understanding of molecular mechanisms of neuronal cell death in these two disorders is imperative. Recently, pathologic processes common to these two groups of disorders have been identified such as the involvement of inflammatory changes, microglia, cytokines, and apoptosis. We intended to involve scientists working in these two major fields together to participate in hot and fruitful discussion for the understanding of neuronal death and for developing newer methods of treatment. The science is progressing so rapidly today and we are working in a very narrow specialized area. Sometimes, we are ignorant about important discoveries in other fields. This conference was a nice opportunity for scien tists working different areas to meet together and to exchange their experi ence. This volume is the proceedings of this Winter Conference.

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】Diophantine Analysis Course Notes from a Summer School【電子書籍】[ Sanda Buja?i? ]

This collection of course notes from a number theory summer school focus on aspects of Diophantine Analysis, addressed to Master and doctoral students as well as everyone who wants to learn the subject. The topics range from Baker’s method of bounding linear forms in logarithms (authored by Sanda Buja?i? and Alan Filipin), metric diophantine approximation discussing in particular the yet unsolved Littlewood conjecture (by Simon Kristensen), Minkowski’s geometry of numbers and modern variations by Bombieri and Schmidt (Tapani Matala-aho), and a historical account of related number theory(ists) at the turn of the 19th Century (Nicola M.R. Oswald). Each of these notes serves as an essentially self-contained introduction to the topic. The reader gets a thorough impression of Diophantine Analysis by its central results, relevant applications and open problems. The notes are complemented with many references and an extensive register which makes it easy to navigate through the book.

This book aims to be unusual; there is very little text, as the images are meant to be self-explanatory. Themes such as weather, geography, wind, snow, rain, fog and dark all become characters of sorts, as do the vessels themselves. Often the vessels being photographed are difficult to distinguish against the buildings and maritime clutter. That is intentional; these different industrial craft are part of the fabric, yet also to many are invisible. Though the reader cannot hear the VHF radios cackle, and the slap of a ship’s wake hitting one’s boat, or the wind lifting and dropping awnings like the sigh of bellows, and the churn of a faithful propeller around the debris which is a constant threat to all except the biggest ships, the hope is that the images will provide some kind of tactile experience and exposure.

Boston Harbor is an extraordinary and busy and lively and commercial place. It is also a danger-fraught region of the nations’ waterways where global mega-ships carrying cargoes that range from cars to Egyptian salt to gypsum intermingle with cross-harbor water-taxis and water workers of all stripes and dialects in all conditions, dark, foggy, and bright. The several radio frequencies convey a myriad of accents from far eastern to colloquial Boston and Charlestown; Braintree and the Bayou and maritime academies all mixed, whether raising a bridge or requesting permission to pass, or inquiring whether a certain boat may have cables out, that might trip up your boat.

The central characters of this book are not buildings, but boats; not people so much as the weather they are constantly adjusting to. There is a cycle at play; on a summer afternoon it seems like a delicate ballet as unspoken rules allow a dozen boats to untangle from a wharf without hitting each other. That cycle can turn brutal as smaller vessels struggle against three-or-four-foot waves, four runs of powerful current daily, each at least nine feet high, debris, radio messages not received, very cold conditions, challenging lack of visibility, and pure tedium.

No camera tripod was used in the making of this book. Nor was a “camera” in the traditional sense, and nor was a professional photographer utilized. The craft photographed include survey boats to whale watchers, tugs, push-boats, oil-supply boats (called bunker barges), others carrying distillates like methanol, some anchored, some public safety boats whizzing by well lit, others rowing, or in fast dinghies, paddle boards, electric-powered boards, and little Sunfish. These, meanwhile were all being dodged by ferries to Hingham, Hull, Provincetown, Salem, the casino in Everett, commuter boats to Lovejoy and Constitution Wharf; massive cruise ships, LNG tankers, product tankers and articulated tug and barges; all in a day’s work, and more.

Sunlight and Seaweed: An Argument for How to Feed, Power and Clean Up the World【電子書籍】[ Tim Flannery ]

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】Sunlight and Seaweed: An Argument for How to Feed, Power and Clean Up the World【電子書籍】[ Tim Flannery ]

‘Sunlight and Seaweed is the beginning of a new way of helping the planet we live on.’ AU Review

Acclaimed scientist Tim Flannery investigates exciting new technologies currently being developed to address our most pressing environmental threats in a book that presents a positive future for us and our planet.

Climate change, food production and toxic pollution present huge challenges, but, as Flannery shows, we already have innovative, practical and inspiring solutions.

Solar energy has, until now, been limited to supplying power only when the sun is shining. But new technology using concentrated sunlight to provide intense heat energy that can be effectively stored overcomes this problem, providing clean renewable power around the clock. Further, the large amounts of power produced can be used to tackle the issue of feeding the world’s growing populationーby enabling energy-intense methods of purifying polluted land for agricultural production.

Drawing carbon out of the atmosphere is an essential component in limiting climate change. Flannery explores the potential of kelp, a fast-growing sea algae, to be used on a large scale to convert carbon from the air to a non-gaseous form, reducing levels of atmospheric carbon.

With accessible and engaging explanations of the fascinating science behind these technologies, as well as accounts of the systems already in operation around the world, Sunlight and Seaweed is an enlightening and uplifting view of the future.

Tim Flannery has published over thirty books including the award-winning The Future Eaters, The Weather Makers and Here on Earth and the novel The Mystery of the Venus Island Fetish. In 2005 he was named Australian Humanist of the Year and in 2007 Australian of the Year. In 2007 he co-founded and was appointed Chair of the Copenhagen Climate Council. In 2011 he became Australia’s Chief Climate Commissioner, and in 2013 he founded the Australian Climate Council. His previous book is Atmosphere of Hope: Searching for Solutions to the Climate Crisis.

‘Sunlight and Seaweed also offers an excellent model for how best to communicate the challenges posed by climate change without turning readers off with unrelieved messages of doom.’ Sydney Morning Herald

‘This new book is among [Flannery’s] best…Wonderfully thought provoking…Well informed and sobering.’ Australian

‘This man is a national treasure, and we should heed his every word.’ Sunday Telegraph

‘It is difficult to overstate the importance of this concise, convincingly argued view of our world’s prospects for its survival and improvement over the next 33 years…Every one of this slim treatise’s 127 pages packs a punch, and its timely content deserves to be read by all of us.’ Books+Publishing

‘Accessible and engaging..An enlightening and uplifting view of the future.’ Readings

‘Tim Flannery addresses complex issues and make them clear and accessible. His compelling book both seriously informs and entertains…This is a fascinating, exciting and inspirational read.’ Toowoomba Chronicle

‘Flannery is optimistic, presenting a well-researched range of clearly explained technologies and strategies, and many of them are compelling reasons to be hopeful.’ SA Weekend

‘A small book full of big ideas…This book doesn’t just wow the reader with nifty ideas; Flannery explains how they actually work, with his signature fluency and clarity.’ Australian Book Review

‘It is a joy to be guided through the science by someone who understands it and can explain it…Flannery commands his subject, but he can also be read for style alone...Flannery’s message in Sunlight and Seaweed is urgent and his spare prose reflects this.’ Newtown Review of Books

‘Flannery has written in easy-to-understand language and he sets out a positive path for this planet’s future.’ Weekly Times

‘In a summer in which heat records are sure to be broken, Tim Flannery dives into the clean technologies that just might sustain the world of our children and grandchildren: giant kelp farms that can do the work of forests, taking carbon dioxide out and deacidifying seawater, and concentrated sunlight stored to power homes and cities. Flannery offers some kernel of hope for us hopeless humans.’ Sydney Morning Herald

‘A focused, clear and optimistic read.’ Best Books of 2017, Adelaide Advertiser

‘While global environmental challenges are immense, he [Flannery] argues here, they are not insurmountable…Flannery has a great ability to distil complex subject matter into something you can wrap your head around.’ North & South

‘This book offers a welcome ray of hope.’ Organic Grocer

Onychomycoses Local Antimycotic Treatment【

The human nail is formed from variably keratinized epithelial structures. The part of the nail organ which is the actual nail plate constitutes the end-product of keratinized cells produced by the matrix. The matrix cells lose their nuclei, become strati fied and keratinized, and are added to the firm nail plate al ready present. It is usually transparent or translucent, smooth and keratinous in structure, pushed forward by the keratin layer of the nail bed and growing out distally as a free edge over the finger/toe-tip. The transparent nail reveals the pink-coloured nail bed. Usually, a white half-moon shaped lunula is visible, extending under the proximal nail fold. The nail plate consti tutes a buttress to pressure. The rate of nail growth is greatest in the second and third decades oflife and declines slightly later. Increased nail growth may be noted during the summer and decreased growth in winter, in evident dependence on the peripheral circulation. Although the nail is not the primary site of attraction at a fleeting glance from others, changes in the nails are quite striking at a second look, and modern freedom of behavior means that changes in the toenails soon become very obvious, especially in women.

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】Along the Trail in Algonquin Park With Ralph Bice【電子書籍】[ Ralph Bice ]

Along the Trail in Algonquin Park has delighted thousands of readers across Canada and the United States from the time of its first publication in the summer of 1980. This is the fourth reprint of the classic work by the late legendary outdoorsman, Ralph Bice of Kearney, Ontario. The writing is vintage Ralph Bice; a combination of unequalled park knowledge, remarkable outdoor adventures and delightful rustic humour.

Along the Trail was originally to have been titled "Forty Years in Algonquin Park," but by the time the book appeared, the author's lifelong love affair with the park had exceeded eighty. In 1993, the time of Algonquin Park's centennial, the "Grand Old Man of Algonquin" had entered his 94th year. He was to continue to live nearby his beloved park until his passing in 1997. Remembered not only for his writings, Ralph Bice is honoured by a fitting memorial to "Mister Algonquin" as Algonquin Park visitors will now discover when they enter the west side of the park. For here the lake he favoured over all others, Butt Lake, has been renamed Ralph Bice Lake.

Boron Neutron Capture Therapy Toward Clinical Trials of Glioma Treatment【電子書籍】[ Renate Alberts ]

The European Collaboration on Boron Neutron Capture Therapy (BNCT), conceived in 1987 and successful in 1989 in gaining financial support as a Concerted Action through the Medical and Health Research Programme of the Commission ofthe European Communities (CEC) in Brussels, considered it an opportune moment to hold its annual Plenary Meeting on 18-20 Septem ber 1991 as an International Workshop entitled "Towards Clinical Trials of Glioma with BNCT". The background to this consideration was influenced by the world-wide resurgence ofinterest in NCT over the last 2 decades and by the exemplifica tions at the Fourth International Symposium on Neutron Capture Therapy for Cancer held in Sydney in December 1990, where it was strongly indicated that within the next 2 years clinical trials would be started both in Europe and the United States. In particular at the High Flux Reactor of the Joint Research Centre of the CEC at Petten in The Netherlands, an epithermal neutron beam designed and installed in the summer of 1990 recently became operable at full reactor power. An extensive series ofexperiments, including the nuclear and radiobiological characterisation of the beam and a healthy tissue tolerance study on canines has started and has the aim to define the preconditions for clinical trials onpatients with Grade III/IV glioma. However, as with any other new therapy modality, it must be demon strated that BNCT is safe for the patient and has a reasonable chance of being an effective therapy.

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】Arctic Doom, Arctic Boom The Geopolitics of Climate Change in the Arctic【電子書籍】[ Dr. Barry Scott Zellen ]

An expert examination of the way climate change is transforming the Arctic environmentally, economically, and geopolitically, and how the challenges of that transformation should be met.

A growing number of scientists estimate that there will be no summer ice in the Arctic by as soon as 2013. Are we approaching the "End of the Arctic?" as journalist Ed Struzik asked in 1992, or fully entering the "Age of the Arctic," as Arctic expert Oran Young predicted in 1986? Arctic Doom, Arctic Boom: The Geopolitics of Climate Change in the Arctic looks at the uncertainty at the top of the world as the shrinking of the polar ice cap opens up new sea lanes and the vast hydrocarbon riches of the Arctic seafloor to commercial development and creates environmental disasters for Arctic biota and indigenous peoples.

Arctic Doom, Arctic Boom explores the geopolitics of the Arctic from a historical as well as a contemporary perspective, showing how the warming of the Earth is transforming our very conception of the Arctic. In addition to addressing economic and environmental issues, the book also considers the vital strategic role of the region in our nation's defenses.

In the summer of 1999, an international group of experts convened in Jerusalem, Israel, in order to define the major environmental challenges facing humanity at the dawn of the new millennium and - where possible - propose ways of addressing them. Almost 50 selected articles are collected in the present book, which constitutes a striking interdisciplinary combination of state-of-the-art science with the latest views on environmental law, education, and international cooperation. Whilst a major fraction of the book is devoted to water-related issues (water quality monitoring, water and wastewater treatment, water-based international cooperation, and more), other sections deal with timely topics relating to air pollution, biodiversity, conservation, and education. The book is intended for environmental scientists, professionals, and students of all disciplines.

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】Spirit of Nature in Northern New Mexico Field Notes on Natural History of Rio Mora National Wildlife Refuge【電子書籍】[ Brian Miller PhD ]

Explore the History, Flora, Fauna, and Wildlife of Rio Mora

The center of these writings is the Rio Mora National Wildlife Refuge-a key part of a 1,500 square mile conservation area more or less midway between the source of the Mora River and its entrance to the Canadian River in northeastern New Mexico.

Spirit of Nature is for the amateur naturalist who doesn't mind muddy shoes or wet socks with seeds sticking in them. It's for the nature lover who enjoys watching the change in seasons and the way nature adapts to them.

When most people think of seasons, they think of four because that is what the calendar tells us. When following changes in nature, however, there are more than twenty-five seasons!

For those interested in phenology, the study of repeating patterns in nature, each season brings a bevy of questions. When does a certain species of flower bloom? When does a given species of migratory bird arrive in the spring to build nests and lay eggs? Can changing conditions affect that timing? Which songs belong to which birds? Which mammal tracks should I follow in fresh snow? Which fragrant scents can I expect in different parts of spring and summer? What new surprises are waiting at each new excursion? Every answer opens more questions!

Windows Phone 8 Field Guide The Quickest Way to Get It Done with Windows Phone 8【電子書籍】[ Paul Thurrott ]

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】Windows Phone 8 Field Guide The Quickest Way to Get It Done with Windows Phone 8【電子書籍】[ Paul Thurrott ]

Welcome to Windows Phone 8 Field Guide, my gift to the Windows Phone community. I've been enthralled by Windows Phone since Microsoft announced the new platform in February 2010 at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. I was so excited by this release, in fact, that I wrote the first-ever book about Windows Phone, called Windows Phone 7 Secrets, in the middle part of that year, before it even shipped to the public. In doing so, I was also one of the first people outside of Microsoft to obtain a prototype Windows Phone handset, and I took it to Europe that summer after writing the book and continued the conversation by blogging about my experiences. Since then, I've never stopped using or writing about Windows Phone. Few people have more experience with this platform than I do. Long story short: Windows Phone wasーand isーeverything that Android and iPhone are not. It provides a wonderful new way of doing things. Oh, and unlike iPhone, it can actually make error-free phone calls too. Bam. I've certainly had my ups and downs with regards to Microsoft's treatment of this platform. While Windows Phone has emerged during the writing of this book as the clear number three smart phone platform behind Google Android and Apple iPhone but ahead of Blackberry, it has yet to achieve what I consider to be a sustainable level of usage. But the trends are positive. My fingers are crossed. But I've never wavered in my support of both Windows Phone and the people who use it (or are considering using it). I test new smart phones regularly, and while I've kept up on the advances in Android and in Apple's recent me-too moves with iOS 7, these platforms simply are not interesting to me. Yes, the iPhone was innovative when it arrived in 2007, but that's also when Apple stopped innovating and started protecting their product. Android? That was never innovative. Android is a mess. Windows Phone isn't just different. Windows Phone is better. And you can tell that's true every time a feature emerges in the competition that copies one from Windows Phone. Social networking integration. Integrated experiences. Beautiful Swiss-influenced design and killer typography. Windows Phone did it all first. Windows Phone still does it better. And it keeps getting better. Thanks for reading. And thanks for using Windows Phone. You made the right choice.

Nature All Around Us A Guide to Urban Ecology【

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】Nature All Around Us A Guide to Urban Ecology【電子書籍】

It's easy to stand in awe of a city's impressive skyline, marveling at its buildings reaching for the clouds and its vast network of roadways and train lines crisscrossing in every direction. It can often seem like everything in a city is man-made, all concrete, steel, and glass. But even the asphalt jungle is not all asphaltーa sidewalk's cracks are filled with nature, if we know where and how to look. To aid us in this quest is Nature All Around Us, which will help us to recognize (and look after) the natural world we traipse through in our daily lives.

Nature All Around Us uses the familiarーsuch as summer Sundays humming with lawn mowers, gray squirrels foraging in planters, and flocks of pigeonsーin order to introduce basic ecological concepts. In twenty-five short chapters organized by scale, from the home to the neighborhood to the city at large, it offers a subtle and entertaining education in ecology sure to inspire appreciation and ultimately stewardship of the environment. Various ecological concepts that any urban dweller might encounter are approachably examined, from understanding why a squirrel might act aggressively towards its neighbor to how nutrients and energy contained within a discarded apple core are recycled back into the food chain. Streaming through the work is an introduction to basic ecology, including the dangers of invasive species and the crucial role played by plants and trees in maintaining air quality.
Taken as a whole, Nature All Around Us is an unprecedented field guide to the ecology of the urban environment that invites us to look at our towns, cities, and even our backyards through the eyes of an ecologist. It is an entertaining, educational, and inspiring glimpse into nature in seemingly unnatural settings, a reminder that we don't have to trek into the wild to see natureーwe just have to open our eyes.

Empire Antarctica Ice, Silence, and Emperor Penguins【電子書籍】[ Gavin Francis ]

Meet the majestic Emperor Penguins of Antarctica in this “mesmerizing and memorable” travel memoir about a doctor’s year-long appointment to the remote Halley Research Station (The Economist).

Gavin Francis fulfilled a lifetime’s ambition when he spent 14 months as the basecamp doctor at Halley, a profoundly isolated British research station on the Caird Coast of Antarctica. So remote, it is said to be easier to evacuate a casualty from the International Space Station than it is to bring someone out of Halley in winter.

Antarctica offered a year of unparalleled silence and solitude, with few distractions and a very little human history, but also a rare opportunity to live among emperor penguins, the only species truly at home in the Antarctic. Following Penguins throughout the yearーfrom a summer of perpetual sunshine to months of winter darknessーGavin Francis explores the world of great beauty conjured from the simplest of elements, the hardship of living at 50 C below zero and the unexpected comfort that the penguin community bring.

Empire Antarctica is the story of one man and his fascination with the world’s loneliest continent, as well as the emperor penguins who weather the winter with him. Combining an evocative narrative with a sublime sensitivity to the natural world, this is travel writing at its very best.

Your Inner Strength【電子書籍】[ Elizabeth Burk ]

My Grandma once told me a story of how we prevent growth if we are not grounded and willing to turn inward in demanding situations. She explained this concept with flora and fauna, the environment that surrounded us while planting a Yellowwood tree.

She told me that our growth could be compared to the growth of trees. They go through many seasons, some more pleasant than others, but each time-frame serves a purpose. For example, we must go through winter and shed our leaves. This may be painful and look beyond repair, but this is how we allow ourselves to turn inward to grow. She said that some of us are so scared to go through a winter that we try to uproot ourselves in the hopes of finding more summer. In doing this, you deprive yourself of growing into a tall majestic tree that lasts a lifetime.

Looking back, I can remember the times I felt removed from the cycles of life. I felt overwhelmed by my environment and that any moment the winds of change were going to take me down. Only until I discovered I could create one, much like a tree, where I could turn to my inner strength and ground myself, no matter the demands of the outside world.

In Your Inner Strength, I invite you along a journey of cultivating mindfulness through being present in the space you're planted. What does this journey look like?

We look at the impact of social media and how it is stealing our happiness and hurting mental health. While bringing out empowering ways to manage social media and its effects on your life.

We discuss the many benefits of mindfulness and take a peek into the neuroscience behind its practice.

Though it may look easy on the surface, we check out how to train our minds to think because it's harder than we expect.

Self-knowledge. A common term, but what does it take to know 'self' and what does that mean?

Meditation is an amazing and versatile tool to practice mindful living and connect to inner strength. We look at the why and how of meditation.

You will discover the benefits of a 5-minute meditation practice and step-by-step instructions. I have included daily mindfulness practices to ease you into more advanced meditation practices.

We look at the concept of self-love and how to add more love into your everyday to truly live happily ever after.

No seed asks why they are planted in their spot. They do not ask if they are worthy of growing or compare themselves to the next. No, it taps into its natural intelligence, its essence, inner strength, and then? It grows. Are you ready to join me in the exploration of your innate intelligence and how to harness your inner power to grow into that untapped potential?

In 1901 grasshoppers had been doing a great deal of damage in some sections of Colorado. Entomologist Charles Richardson Jones, in co-operation with the Agricultural Experiment Station and the Extension Department of the Agricultural College, was sent out to find a solution. Most of the summer was spent by Mr. Jones in experimental and demonstration work for grasshopper control.

In order to get the best results it was found necessary to organize the farmers. Mr. Jones was authorized by this office to organize pest districts as provided for in the Pest Inspection Act. By this system the careless farmer or the non-resident owner could be compelled to destroy the hoppers on his land for the protection of the others in his district. Two pest districts were organized in Rio Grande County, one in Saguache County, one in El Paso County, and three arranged for in Logan County. Local county inspectors were appointed by the county commissioners and authorized by this office to see that the work was carried out in their respective districts. Mr. Jones spent considerable time with these men, aiding them in getting the work organized.

In 1917 Jones published a 27-page book "Grasshopper Control" outlining successful strategies based on his experimentation and research over the years in Colorado.

In introducing his book, Jones writes:
"The agricultural interests of the United States have suffered for many years from the depredations of locusts, or grasshoppers, and every farmer should be more familiar with the methods of control. Usually the question of grasshopper control becomes a problem for concerted action, but co-operation is not always possible and the individual farmer should at all times keep this problem before him for consideration. In almost every county of Colorado there have been outbreaks of this pest, and various remedial measures have been applied. Should weather conditions favor insect development this year, practical control methods should be used to save the crops.

"The past season witnessed several outbreaks in various parts of our State which were successfully controlled, and there is no longer any reason why the farmers should allow their crops to be destroyed by this pest. They are better informed than ever before as to the life history and habits of the grasshopper and the most efficient methods of destroying them. Colorado's "Amended Pest Law" provides for the forming of pest districts for the control of rodents and injurious insects, and can be applied effectively in all localities. This measure should have the active support of all county commissioners to give a basis for a county-wide organization, and the direct application of remedial measures for the complete control of this invading pest.
"The general life history, habits, and practical methods of control of grasshoppers have been worked out and are given here, in order that the farmers may intelligently and successfully combat the pests. The investigations upon which this paper is based gives information that can be applied in any part of the State."

From Pathology to Politics Public Health in America【電子書籍】[ Thomas DiLorenzo ]

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】From Pathology to Politics Public Health in America【電子書籍】[ Thomas DiLorenzo ]

Barely a day goes by without news of the latest public health threat from the American media. Some of us are told we live in a ""cancer cluster""-an area with a disproportionate number of cancer deaths. During the summer months, those who live in or near urban areas are bombarded with daily smog measurements and air pollution alerts. City water supplies are frequently called health hazards. At times, it seems as though virtually everything we eat and drink is denounced as bad for us by some ""public health expert."" Our cars burn too much gasoline; we own too many firearms; we are too fat; some of us are too skinny. Americans today are living longer than they ever have before. Why the almost daily announcements of new public health threats and proclamations of impending crises? Bennett and DiLorenzo address this question and others here. They begin by examining the large public health bureaucracy, its preoccupation with expanding governmental programs, and its concern with political issues that too often have little to do with improving public health. Then they trace the evolution of the American public health movement from its founding after the Civil War to the 1950s. They describe the transformation of public health's focus from the eradication of disease to social policy as a by-product of the 1960s. Bennett and DiLorenzo catalogue the ""radicalization"" of the public health movement by discussing its numerous political initiatives. They include case studies of the politicization of the public health movement in America. The authors reveal various methods of statistical manipulation that certain public health researchers use to ""cook the data"" in order to achieve politically correct results. A final chapter discusses the implications of the transformation of public health from pathology to politics. This vigorously argued analysis sees the public health movement as claiming expertise on virtually every social issue, from poverty to human rights.
