The Christian Moral Life Directions for the Journey to Happiness【電子書籍】[ John Rziha ]

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】The Christian Moral Life Directions for the Journey to Happiness【電子書籍】[ John Rziha ]

To take a journey, travelers must know where they are, where they are going, and how to get there. Moral theology examines the same three truths. The Christian Moral Life is a handbook for moral theology that uses the theme of a journey to explain its key ethical concepts. First, humans begin with their creation in the image of God. Secondly, the goal of the journey is explained as a loving union with God, to achieve a share in his eternal happiness. Third and finally, the majority of the book examines how to attain this goal. Within the journey motif, the book covers the moral principles essential for attaining true happiness. Based on an examination of the moral methodology in the bible, the book discusses the importance of participating in divine nature through grace in order to attain eternal happiness. It further notes the role of law, virtue, and the gifts of the Holy Spirit in guiding and transforming humans into friends of God, who participate in his happiness. Following this section on moral theology in general, the book analyzes the individual virtues to give more concrete guidance. The entire project builds upon the insights of great Christian thinkers, such as Thomas Aquinas, Th?r?se of Lisieux, and John Paul II, to uncover the moral wisdom in scripture and to show people how to be truly happy both in this life and the next. This book will be of great interest to undergraduate students of moral theology, priests and seminarians, parents and teachers seeking to raise and to form happy children, and anyone interested in discovering the meaning of true happiness.

Are you perfectly happy, or are you still looking for perfect happiness? Most people are still actively searching for true and lasting happiness, but are looking in the wrong places. It's easy to be misled into believing that happiness is found in money, rank, or renown. While these things are not inherently bad, and can, in fact, be used to do much good, they will, in the final analysis, not bring a happiness that endures. Once we realize that nothing less than a complete union with God will satisfy our souls, we will not let transitory things distract or disappoint us. This is because then, according to Fulton Sheen, you put no more hope in things than they can bear. You cease looking for first-rate joys where there are only tenth-rate pleasures. In addition to addressing the topic of joy vs. pleasure in Finding True Happiness, Fulton Sheen also helps us gain the right perspective on things such as loneliness and the secret of sanctity. This brings us to our ultimate purpose, which is found in God alone. Only by losing oneself in God, will we find our true selvesーand true happiness along with it.

Ibn Miskawayh, the Soul, and the Pursuit of Happiness The Truly Happy Sage【電子書籍】[ John Peter Radez ]

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】Ibn Miskawayh, the Soul, and the Pursuit of Happiness The Truly Happy Sage【電子書籍】[ John Peter Radez ]

Ibn Miskawayh, the Soul, and the Pursuit of Happiness explores the moral philosophy and context of Ibn Miskawayh (932?1030), an advocate of the intellectually cultivated life with a strong religious bent. Though not necessarily a major innovator, he sought through his writings to provide a moral compass for turbulent times, much like thinkers such as Petrarch (1304?1374), Pico della Mirandola (1463?1494), Francois Rabelais (1494?1553), Montesquieu (1689?1755) or more recently, Mortimer Adler (1902?2001). Despite the tumultuous times in which they lived, these thinkers offered the world hope through a humanism that cultivated both civic and moral character. Whether directly expressed in his moral philosophy or illustrated in the examples of renowned or notorious historical figures, Miskawayh’s core idea is that one’s character is much easier kept than recovered. In this book, John Peter Radez shows how Miskawayh stands out not only as one of Islam’s first ethicists, but also one of its true intellectuals: thinker, historian, codifier of the science of adab, and a truly happy sage who represented the best of his generation’s intellectual and cultural elite. Miskawayh’s message of how to create lives worthy of human beingsーhis civic humanismーresonates today.

Kant, Ought Implies Can, the Principle of Alternate Possibilities, and Happiness【電子書籍】[ Samuel Kahn ]

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】Kant, Ought Implies Can, the Principle of Alternate Possibilities, and Happiness【電子書籍】[ Samuel Kahn ]

Throughout his corpus, Kant repeatedly and resolutely denies that there is a duty to promote one’s own happiness, and most present-day Kantians seem to agree with him. In Kant, Ought Implies Can, the Principle of Alternate Possibilities, and Happiness, Samuel Kahn argues that this denial rests on two main ideas: (1) a conception of duty that makes the principle of ought implies can (OIC) and the principle of alternate possibilities (PAP) analytic, and (2) the claim that humans necessarily promote their own happiness. This book defends OIC and PAP but nonetheless attacks the second idea, and it supplements this attack with two additional argumentsーan interpersonal one and an intrapersonal oneーfor the claim that a modern day Kantian ethics should affirm a duty to promote one’s own happiness.

Stop Missing Your Life The Power of Being Present ? to Grow, Change and Find Happiness【電子書籍】[ Cory Muscara ]

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】Stop Missing Your Life The Power of Being Present ? to Grow, Change and Find Happiness【電子書籍】[ Cory Muscara ]

Many of us live on autopilot, often so guarded that we don't experience the potential richness that life has to offer. How can we find real happiness amidst the chaos, where we don't reach our life's end and feel we missed out?

In Stop Missing Your Life, mindfulness teacher Cory Muscara takes us on a journey into the heart of what is required for real change, growth, and happiness. He exposes how the phrase "be present" has become little more than a platitude, imbued with the misguided message to be present just for the sake of being present, and reveals how to achieve true Presence: a quality of being that is unmistakably attractive about a person, and one that only comes when we've peeled back the layers of guarding that prevent us from being our full, honest, and integrated selves in the world.

Muscara shows how we build internal walls, what he describes as a "Pain Box" inhibiting us from living a deeply connected and meaningful life. He offers a four-part FACE model (Focus, Allow, Curiosity, and Embodiment) that helps chip away at those walls and builds our capacity to experience the richness of our lives. Stop Missing Your Life ultimately teaches how we can find peace in the chaos and become better people for our family, our communities, and our world.

'Pursuit of Happiness' begins with Peter the Great having taken control in Russia, the conflict that develops in Europe resulting in the creation of the Grand Alliance against Louis XIV's expansion of power, and the growing divide between America and Great Britain. It traces the development of the ideas of the Enlightenment to their application in the American colonies as well as the spread of imperialism by Britain in India. The application of knowledge to industry is explored and the advantages to Britain's increasingly powerful position in Europe. The educated, articulate middle class in most countries strives for a sharing of power but is frustrated in its desire to gain more political rights. There is a growing consciousness in Britain and, to some extent in America, of the travesty of slavery and the slave trade. The book ends on a more optimistic note when America declares its independence.

Is it when we are alone, or when there are others around to share it with?

This book is a tale of Pihu, the peacock. Pihu was not just any peacockーhe was special. Philosophies of Happiness A Comparative Introduction to the Flourishing Life【電子書籍】[ Diana Lobel ]

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】Philosophies of Happiness A Comparative Introduction to the Flourishing Life【電子書籍】[ Diana Lobel ]

What does it mean to be truly happy? In Philosophies of Happiness, Diana Lobel provides a rich spectrum of arguments for a theory of happiness as flourishing or well-being, offering a global, cross-cultural, and interdisciplinary perspective on how to create a vital, fulfilling, and significant life. Drawing upon perspectives from a broad range of philosophical traditionsーEastern and Western, ancient and contemporaryーthe book suggests that just as physical health is the well-being of the body, happiness is the healthy and flourishing condition of the whole human being, and we experience the most complete happiness when we realize our potential through creative engagement.

Lobel shows that while thick descriptions of happiness differ widely in texture and detail, certain themes resonate across texts from different traditions and historical contexts, suggesting core features of a happy life: attentive awareness; effortless action; relationship and connection to a larger, interconnected community; love or devotion; and creative engagement. Each feature adds meaning, significance, and value, so that we can craft lives of worth and purpose. These themes emerge from careful study of philosophical and religious texts and traditions: the Greek philosophers Aristotle and Epicurus; the Chinese traditions of Confucius, Laozi, and Zhuangzi; the Hindu Bhagavad G?t?; the Japanese Buddhist tradition of Soto Zen master D?gen and his modern expositor Shunryu Suzuki; the Western religious traditions of Augustine and Maimonides; the Persian Sufi tale Conference of the Birds; and contemporary research on mindfulness and creativity. Written in a clear, accessible style, Philosophies of Happiness invites readers of all backgrounds to explore and engage with religious and philosophical conceptions of what makes life meaningful.

Visit cup.columbia.edu/extras/supplement/philosophies-of-happiness for additional appendixes and supplemental notes.

The Happiness of Pursuit What Neuroscience Can Teach Us About the Good Life【電子書籍】[ Shimon Edelman ]

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】The Happiness of Pursuit What Neuroscience Can Teach Us About the Good Life【電子書籍】[ Shimon Edelman ]

When fishing for happiness, catch and release. Remember these seven words -- they are the keys to being happy. So says Shimon Edelman, an expert on psychology and the mind.

In The Happiness of Pursuit, Edelman offers a fundamental understanding of pleasure and joy via the brain. Using the concept of the mind as a computing device, he unpacks how the human brain is highly active, involved in patterned networks, and constantly learning from experience. As our brains predict the future through pursuit of experience, we are rewarded both in real time and in the long run. Essentially, as Edelman discovers, it's the journey, rather than the destination, that matters.

The idea that cognition is computation -- the brain is a machine -- is nothing new of course. But, as Edelman argues, the mind is actually a bundle of ongoing computations, essentially, the brain being one of many possible substrates that can support them. Edelman makes the case for these claims by constructing a conceptual toolbox that offers readers a glimpse of the computations underlying the mind's faculties: perception, motivation and emotions, action, memory, thinking, social cognition, learning and language. It is this collection of tools that enables us to discover how and why happiness happens.

An informative, accessible, and witty tour of the mind, The Happiness of Pursuit offers insights to a thorough understanding of what minds are, how they relate to each other and to the world, and how we can make the best of it all.

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】Loving, the Key to Happiness and Blessings.【電子書籍】[ Robert Adams ]

Loving, The Key to Happiness and Blessings is really three books in one. Each one can individually bring happiness and blessings into the life of the reader. The first book is chapter one and two. Chapter one tells us who God says we should love if we are one of his children. Because of what God and Jesus did in loving us, chapter two teaches what the Bible says are the prerequisites and requirements for becoming one of God‘s children and having the Holy Spirit to help us do what is in chapter one. If we haven’t met all those prerequisites and requirements already, we can believe and act on them and become one of God’s children for the greatest happiness and blessing of our life time. The second book, chapters three through seven, focuses on how we can obtain happiness and blessings by following what the Bible teaches us on how we can love God, our neighbors, our brothers and sisters in Christ, and everyone includingーyes, even our enemies. The third book, chapter eight, tells how we obtain happiness and blessings as we equip ourselves for loving living through Bible study and prayer. Life Course, Happiness and Well-being in Japan【電子書籍】

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】Life Course, Happiness and Well-being in Japan【電子書籍】

Much of the existing literature on happiness in Japan has been produced in the field of economics and psychology and is quantitative in nature. Here, for the first time, a group of anthropologists and sociologists jointly analyze the state of happiness and unhappiness in Japan among varying social groups in its physical, interpersonal, existential and structural dimensions, offering new insights into fundamental issues.

This book investigates the connections between sociostructural aspects, individual agency and happiness in contemporary Japan from a life course perspective. The contributors examine quantitative and qualitative empirical data on the processes that impact how happiness and well-being are envisioned, crafted, and debated in Japan across the life-cycle. Therefore, the book discusses the shifting notions of happiness during people’s lives from birth to death, analyzing the age group-specific experiences while taking into consideration people’s life trajectories and historical changes. It points out recent developments in regards to demographic change, late marriage, and the changing labor market and focuses on their significant impact on the well-being of Japanese people. In particular it highlights the interdependencies of lives within the family and how families are collaborating for the purpose of maintaining or enhancing the happiness of its members.

Broadening our understanding of the multidimensionality of happiness in Japan, this book will be of interest to students and scholars of Japanese Studies, Anthropology, and Sociology.

Will as Commitment and Resolve An Existential Account of Creativity, Love, Virtue, and Happiness【電子書籍】[ John J. Davenport ]

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】Will as Commitment and Resolve An Existential Account of Creativity, Love, Virtue, and Happiness【電子書籍】[ John J. Davenport ]

In contemporary philosophy, the will is often regarded as a sheer philosophical fiction. In Will as Commitment and Resolve, Davenport argues not only that the will is the central power of human agency that makes decisions and forms intentions but also that it includes the capacity to generate new motivation different in structure from prepurposive desires.

The concept of "projective motivation" is the central innovation in Davenport's existential account of the everyday notion of striving will. Beginning with the contrast between "eastern" and "western" attitudes toward assertive willing, Davenport traces the lineage of the idea of projective motivation from NeoPlatonic and Christian conceptions of divine motivation to Scotus, Kant, Marx, Arendt, and Levinas.

Rich with historical detail, this book includes an extended examination of Platonic and Aristotelian eudaimonist theories of human motivation. Drawing on contemporary critiques of egoism, Davenport argues that happiness is primarily a byproduct of activities and pursuits aimed at other agent-transcending goods for their own sake. In particular, the motives in virtues and in the practices as defined by Alasdair MacIntyre are projective rather than eudaimonist.

This theory is supported by analyses of radical evil, accounts of intrinsic motivation in existential psychology, and contemporary theories of identity-forming commitment in analytic moral psychology. Following Viktor Frankl, Joseph Raz, and others, Davenport argues that Harry Frankfurt's conception of caring requires objective values worth caring about, which serve as rational grounds for projecting new final ends. The argument concludes with a taxonomy of values or goods, devotion to which can make life meaningful for us.

Human Spirituality and Happiness A Tribute to Life the Source of Inspirations the Source of Hope the Source of Joy【電子書籍】[ Lok Sang Ho ]

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】Human Spirituality and Happiness A Tribute to Life the Source of Inspirations the Source of Hope the Source of Joy【電子書籍】[ Lok Sang Ho ]

This is a collection consisting largely of poems and Lok- Sang's translation of the Daodejing, the Xin Xin Ming, and the Heart Sutra, plus a number of short passages grouped under the title of The Essence of Spirituality from A to Z. The book brings together the teachings from the west and from the east about how to live a rich, fulfilling life. Carrying the subtitle "a tribute to Life", the author promotes his "happiness formula" LIFE, consisting of Love, Insight, Fortitude, and Engagement, pleading with readers that Life is the only resource we have and that we all need to do the best we can to ensure that its potential can be realized. That is the surest and the only way to gain happiness.

Professor Liah Greenfeld, Boston University:

"Today, when history takes one of its true great turns ....Lok Sang Ho's book appears particularly timely.... It is a book of poetry not only because it contains masterful original renditions of the Song of the Truthful Mind, the Heart Sutra, and most remarkably, the Daodejing of Laozi, but essentially because it seems to feel its way to enlightenment with words, using words as a search-light, rather than a recording medium of ideas and impressions."

Drew Weiss, Clinical Psychiatrist, Carleton College:

"As I read verse 57(of the Daodejing) again, I am reminded of my culture, the clever gadgets in most people's hands today afford access to the world's many great wisdoms and to information essential to becoming a fully engaged member of society. Yet much of what people week and share is rubbish or worse and most seem completely unaware of themselves, the world, or the effects of their clever gadgets. This book is a treasure."

The Happiness Effect How Social Media is Driving a Generation to Appear Perfect at Any Cost【電子書籍】[ Donna Freitas ]

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】The Happiness Effect How Social Media is Driving a Generation to Appear Perfect at Any Cost【電子書籍】[ Donna Freitas ]

Sexting. Cyberbullying. Narcissism. Social media has become the dominant force in young people's lives, and each day seems to bring another shocking tale of private pictures getting into the wrong hands, or a lament that young people feel compelled to share their each and every thought with the entire world. Have smartphones and social media created a generation of self-obsessed egomaniacs? Absolutely not, Donna Freitas argues in this provocative book. And, she says, these alarmist fears are drawing attention away from the real issues that young adults are facing. Drawing on a large-scale survey and interviews with students on thirteen college campuses, Freitas finds that what young people are overwhelmingly concerned with--what they really want to talk about--is happiness. They face enormous pressure to look perfect online--not just happy, but blissful, ecstatic, and fabulously successful. Unable to achieve this impossible standard, they are anxious about letting the less-than-perfect parts of themselves become public. Far from wanting to share everything, they are brutally selective when it comes to curating their personal profiles, and worry obsessively that they might unwittingly post something that could come back to haunt them later in life. Through candid conversations with young people from diverse backgrounds, Freitas reveals how even the most well-adjusted individuals can be stricken by self-doubt when they compare their experiences with the vast collective utopia that they see online. And sometimes, as on anonymous platforms like Yik Yak, what they see instead is a depressing cesspool of racism and misogyny. Yet young people are also extremely attached to their smartphones and apps, which sometimes bring them great pleasure. It is very much a love-hate relationship. While much of the public's attention has been focused on headline-grabbing stories, the everyday struggles and joys of young people have remained under the radar. Freitas brings their feelings to the fore, in the words of young people themselves. The Happiness Effect is an eye-opening window into their first-hand experiences of social media and its impact on them.
