From the Arab Spring to the Spanish Indignados, from Occupy Wall Street in New York to Nuit Debout in Paris, contemporary protest bears the mark of citizenism, a libertarian and participatory brand of populism which appeals to ordinary citizens outraged at the arrogance of political and financial elites in the wake of the Great Recession. This book draws on 140 interviews with activists and participants in occupations and demonstrations to explore the new politics nurtured by the 'movement of the squares' of 2011-16 and its reflection of an exceptional phase of crisis and social transformation. Gerbaudo demonstrates how, in waging a unifying struggle against a perceived Oligarchy, today's movements combine the neo-anarchist ethos of horizontality and leaderlessness inherited from the anti-globalisation movement, and a resurgent populist demand for full popular sovereignty and the reclamation of citizenship rights. He analyses the manifestation of this ideology through the signature tactics of these upheavals, including protest camps in public squares, popular assemblies and social media activism. And he charts its political ramifications from Podemos in Spain to Bernie Sanders in the US, revealing how the central square occupations have been foundational to current movements for radical democracy worldwide.

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】Behind the Mask of Chivalry The Making of the Second Ku Klux Klan【電子書籍】[ Nancy K. MacLean ]

On Thanksgiving night, 1915, a small band of hooded men gathered atop Stone Mountain, an imposing granite butte just outside Atlanta. With a flag fluttering in the wind beside them, a Bible open to the twelfth chapter of Romans, and a flaming cross to light the night sky above, William Joseph Simmons and his disciples proclaimed themselves the new Knights of the Ku Klux Klan, named for the infamous secret order in which many of their fathers had served after the Civil War. Unsure of their footing in the New South and longing for the provincial, patriarchal world of the past, the men of the second Klan saw themselves as an army in training for a war between the races. They boasted that they had bonded into "an invisible phalanx...to stand as impregnable as a tower against every encroachment upon the white man's liberty...in the white man's country, under the white man's flag." Behind the Mask of Chivalry brings the "invisible phalanx" into broad daylight, culling from history the names, the life stories, and the driving passions of the anonymous Klansmen beneath the white hoods and robes. Using an unusual and rich cache of internal Klan records from Athens, Georgia, to anchor her observations, author Nancy MacLean combines a fine-grained portrait of a local Klan world with a penetrating analysis of the second Klan's ideas and politics nationwide. No other right-wing movement has ever achieved as much power as the Ku Klux Klan of the 1920s, and this book shows how and why it did. MacLean reveals that the movement mobilized its millions of American followers largely through campaigns waged over issues that today would be called "family values": Prohibition violation, premarital sex, lewd movies, anxieties about women's changing roles, and worries over waning parental authority. Neither elites nor "poor white trash," most of the Klan rank and file were married, middle-aged, and middle class. Local meetings, or klonklaves, featured readings of the minutes, plans for recruitment campaigns and Klan barbecues, and distribution of educational materials--Christ and Other Klansmen was one popular tome. Nonetheless, as mundane as proceedings often were at the local level, crusades over "morals" always operated in the service of the Klan's larger agenda of virulent racial hatred and middle-class revanchism. The men who deplored sex among young people and sought to restore the power of husbands and fathers were also sworn to reclaim the "white man's country," striving to take the vote from blacks and bar immigrants. Comparing the Klan to the European fascist movements that grew out of the crucible of the first World War, MacLean maintains that the remarkable scope and frenzy of the movement reflected less on members' power within their communities than on the challenges to that power posed by African Americans, Jews, Catholics, immigrants, and white women and youth who did not obey the Klan's canon of appropriaite conduct. In vigilante terror, the Klan's night riders acted out their movement's brutal determination to maintain inherited hierarchies of race, class, and gender. Compellingly readable and impeccably researched, The Mask of Chivalry is an unforgettable investigation of a crucial era in American history, and the social conditions, cultural currents, and ordinary men that built this archetypal American reactionary movement.

In this masterful work, Jean-Luc Marion shows how some of Descartes' most decisive points remain masked by the various "Cartesianisms" that historiography and convenient simplifications alike have constructed. The book's first half shows how Descartes lines up against Cartesianism, setting forth several closely argued attempts to free up the positive status of skepticism in the Cartesian corpus, the non-substantial (and non-reflexive) character of the ego cogito, the complex elaboration of the idea of the infinite, and the role of esteem as a mode of the cogitatio. Marion then offers a second set of studies examining the work of Montaigne, Hobbes, and Spinoza and seeking to reconstitute some of the ways in which Cartesianism (and non-Cartesianism) become opposed to Descartes. Arising at the pivot point between these two paths of inquiry is a chapter dedicated to Descartes and phenomenology, with particular focus on how Descartes can be understood to have practicedーin his own way and by anticipationーa genuine phenomenological reduction. The final volume in Jean-Luc Marion's erudite trilogy of Cartesian Questions, this authoritative book demonstrates that, rather than belonging strictly to the past, Descartes continues to speak to our future.

Character traits may be used as defenses, or, 'coping mechanisms' that may be developed by individuals in an exaggerated fashion in order to conceal psychological conflicts. When these mechanisms break down, previously repressed trauma erupts into consciousness. One such trait is selflessness. Les Barbanell examines the transformation of selflessness into the Caretaker Personality Disorder and how it is not always better to give than receive, that being good can go bad, and that the 'disease to please' can even be fatal.

His narrative charts a fascinating course from Vita's lonely childhood at Knole, through her affectionate but 'open' marriage to Harold Nicolson (during which both husband and wife energetically pursued homosexual affairs, Vita most famously with Virginia Woolf), and through Vita's literary successes and disappointments, to the famous gardens the couple created at Sissinghurst. The book tells how, from her privileged world of the aristocracy, Sackville-West brought her penchant for costume, play-acting and rebellion to the artistic vanguard of modern Britain. Dennison is the acclaimed author of many books including a biography of Queen Victoria. Here, in the first biography to be written of Vita for thirty years, he reveals the whole story and gets behind 'the beautiful mask' of Vita's public achievements to reveal an often troubled persona which heroically resisted compromise on every level. Drawing on wideranging sources and the extensive letters that sustained her marriage, this is a compelling story of love, loss and jealousy, of high-life and low points, of binding affection and illicit passion - a portrait of an extraordinary, 20th-century life.

The Mask of Command is about generals: who they are, what they do and how they affect the world we live in. Through portraits of four generals - archetypal hero Alexander the Great, anti-hero Wellington, the unheroic Ulysses S. Grant and the false heroic of Hitler - John Keegan propounds the view of heroism in warfare as inextricable linked with the political imperative of the age and place. He demonstrates how the role of the general alters with the ethos of the society that creates him and concludes that there is no place for heroism in a nuclear world.

The Mask of Command is a companion volume to John Keegan's classic study of the individual soldier, The Face of Battle: together they form a masterpiece of military and human history.

The classic that has transformed the psychiatric definition of sanity and continues to provide insight on American society and psychological introspection.

Although highly controversial, Hervey Cleckley's Mask of Sanity provides one of the most influential clinical descriptions of psychopathy in the twentieth century. At the crux of his argument, Cleckley claims that many psychopathic personalities go undiagnosed because they maintain a social mask that conceals their mental disorder and enables them to blend in with society. Furthermore, many of these affected individuals appear to function normally in accordance with standard psychiatric criteria.

Intent on detecting and diagnosing the elusive psychopath, Cleckley has compiled an assortment of case studies and offers suggestions for palliative care. This ambitious work aims to define and examine every aspect of this abstract state of being. Ultimately, Cleckley refines the term "psychopath" and strips it of stigmatization.

"I know of no more stirring presentation of the clinical picture, the social consequences, and the therapeutic difficulties incident to the problem of the psychopath." ー The Quarterly Review of Biology

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】Political Hypocrisy The Mask of Power, from Hobbes to Orwell and Beyond, Revised Edition - Second Edition【電子書籍】[ David Runciman ]

What kind of hypocrite should voters choose as their next leader? The question seems utterly cynical. But, as David Runciman suggests, it is actually much more cynical to pretend that politics can ever be completely sincere. Political Hypocrisy is a timely, and timeless, book on the problems of sincerity and truth in politics, and how we can deal with them without slipping into hypocrisy ourselves. Runciman draws on the work of some of the great truth-tellers in modern political thought--Hobbes, Mandeville, Jefferson, Bentham, Sidgwick, and Orwell--and applies his ideas to different kinds of hypocritical politicians from Oliver Cromwell to Hillary Clinton. He argues that we should accept hypocrisy as a fact of politics--the most dangerous form of political hypocrisy is to claim to have a politics without hypocrisy. Featuring a new foreword that takes the story up to Donald Trump, this book examines why, instead of vainly searching for authentic politicians, we should try to distinguish between harmless and harmful hypocrisies and worry only about the most damaging varieties.

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】The Search for the Man in the Iron Mask A Historical Detective Story【電子書籍】[ Paul Sonnino ]

The Search for the Man in the Iron Mask triumphantly solves an enduring puzzle that has stumped historians for centuries and seduced novelists and filmmakers to this day. Who was the man who was rumored to have been kept in prison and treated royally during much of the reign of Louis XIV while being forced to wear an iron mask? Could he possibly have been the twin brother of the Sun King? Like every other serious scholar, intrepid historian Paul Sonnino discounts this theory, instead taking the reader along on his adventures to uncover the truth behind this ancient enigma. Exploring the hidden, squalid side of the lavish court of France, the author uncovers the full spectrum of French society, from humble servants to wealthy merchants to kings and queens. All had self-interested reasons to hold their secrets close until one humble valet named Eustache Dauger was arrested and jailed for decades, simply because he knew too much and opened his mouth at the wrong time. Presenting his dramatic solution to the mystery, Sonnino convincingly shows that no one will be able to tell the story of the man in the iron mask without taking into account the staggering array of evidence he has uncovered over the course of decades.

This volume examines the often-overlooked crisis of sexual misconduct within Korean Protestant churches, exploring how militarized culture, hierarchical power, and institutional silence contribute to the abuse of congregantsーespecially those in vulnerable situations. Through a blend of sociocultural, theological, and psychological analysis, the book goes beyond individual acts of transgression to reveal the systemic forces that perpetuate clergy sexual misconduct. By investigating the historical, cultural, and spiritual dimensions of abuse, the book offers a framework for reframing survivor-centered care and rethinking pastoral theology. It concludes with a call for transformative change in religious practice, urging greater transparency and more compassionate faith communities. Set in 1625, "The Three Musketeers" recounts the adventures of a young man named d'Artagnan after he leaves home to travel to Paris, to join the Musketeers of the Guard. Although D'Artagnan is not able to join this elite corps immediately, he befriends the three most formidable musketeers of the age: Athos, Porthos and Aramis and gets involved in affairs of the state and court. Dumas frequently works into the plot various injustices, abuses and absurdities of the old regime, giving the story an additional political aspect at a time when the debate in France between republicans and monarchists was still fierce. The novel Twenty Years After follows events in France during the Fronde, during the childhood reign of Louis XIV. The musketeers are valiant and just in their efforts to protect young Louis XIV and the doomed Charles I from their attackers. The Vicomte de Bragelonne, Louise de la Valli?re and The Man in the Iron Mask are set between 1660 and 1667 against the background of the transformation of Louis XIV from child monarch to Sun King. Alexandre Dumas, p?re (1802-1870) was a French writer whose works have been translated into nearly 100 languages and he is one of the most widely read French authors. His most famous works are The Count of Monte Cristo and The Three Musketeers.

Something in our world has gone terribly awry, leaving many wondering what on earth is going on. The fact is over recent decades, as the world slept spiritually, a subtle metaphysical shift has taken place in societies spanning the globe, altering both human and planetary behavior. This paradigm shift has left in its wake a planet in peril, filled with hostility, volatility, excessive immorality, and erratic weather patterns, disrupting even the current world order.

Across the globe, we now witness a pervasive godless culture of idolatry, materialism, human greed, incivility, senseless violence, wars, tribalism, gender inequality, racial disparity, and political correctness. These have all but stifled civil discourse, thereby accelerating the systematic deterioration of traditional cultural and social norms. Toss in a volatile global economy along with corrupt human institutions of church and state and what we have left is a world system of operation teetering on the brink of catastrophic collapse. What we are now experiencing is a prophesied process of social, moral, political, planetary and socio-economic disorder.

With every spinning news cycle, we are given a constant, sobering reminder of Earth's new reality, and an eschatological foretaste of that which now emerges before our very eyes. Perhaps you, too, have sensed this radical sea change in today's uncertain and ever-evolving world. Certainly, you are not alone in this observation. For most people, today's world is but a mere shadow of the place we experienced as children and were hoping to be a part of as adults. Suffice it to say, our world is currently undergoing a major transformation, a rebirth of sorts, as it makes ready for the prophesied inauguration and global occupation of Earth's final despot ruler, the prince of darkness himself, called, the Antichrist. So what does this all mean for today's world? Where does one turn for credible answers and helpful instruction? In a world filled with mendacity, truth is oftentimes lost in a world of spin, making it difficult if not altogether impossible to differentiate between what's real and what's not. Yet, if truth is what you seek, then Dragon Beneath the Purple and Scarlet Mask was written specifically with you in mind. Come now and learn the truth behind the unprecedented and unpredictable times in which we now live. Indeed, you are most blessed. For many prophets and righteous people from ancient times desired to see what your eyes are about to see and did not see it, and to hear what your ears are about to hear and did not hear it.

Revolution came in different stages in the gradual development of the brain in humans. The entire focus, instead of betterment of life got diverted to living a self-absorbed and narcissistic life at the cost of others. Ambitions turned into hatred, revenge, and self-sustenance by killing. Revolutions gave more and more weapons in the hands of humans to wipe out everything that they did not want. It became a race of massacres, which became only a number without any value.

Industrial Revolution, meant for comfort, peace, and harmony, turned into a competition to see who had more. Right from the Mahabharat War around 3500 B.C. and then World Wars I & II, the top leaders of the world took pride in devastation and killing. A man never looked at a woman as a human being and used her as an object to satisfy his lust. Torturing other humans was enjoyed over a toast of wine.

Dharma, the righteous path explained in the Vedas, the Bhagavad Gita, and then the Ten Commandments, is grossly misunderstood, misinterpreted, and distorted. They taught sacrifice and virtues, and order that will make life and the universe possible. Even nature was not spared. “Selfishness” has become the order of the day.

What is the view of the young?

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】The Gas Mask in Interwar Germany Visions of Chemical Modernity【電子書籍】[ Peter Thompson ]

Exploring the history of the gas mask in Germany from 1915 to the eve of the Second World War, Peter Thompson traces how chemical weapons and protective technologies like the gas mask produced new relationships to danger, risk, management and mastery in the modern age of mass destruction. Recounting the apocalyptic visions of chemical death that circulated in interwar Germany, he argues that while everyday encounters with the gas mask tended to exacerbate fears, the gas mask also came to symbolize debates about the development of military and chemical technologies in the Weimar Republic and the Third Reich. He underscores how the gas mask was tied into the creation of an exclusionary national community under the Nazis and the altered perception of environmental danger in the second half of the twentieth century. As this innovative new history shows, chemical warfare and protection technologies came to represent poignant visions of the German future.

Dominating the world around us, with deadly gun violence, male suicide rates and incels on Reddit, masculinity is perceived to be 'toxic', 'fragile' and 'in crisis'.

In Mask Off, JJ Bola exposes masculinity as a performance that men are socially conditioned into. 【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】The Age of the Gas Mask How British Civilians Faced the Terrors of Total War【電子書籍】[ Susan R. Grayzel ]

The First World War introduced the widespread use of lethal chemical weapons. In its aftermath, the British government, like that of many states, had to prepare civilians to confront such weapons in a future war. Over the course of the interwar period, it developed individual anti-gas protection as a cornerstone of civil defence. Susan R. Grayzel traces the fascinating history of one object ? the civilian gas mask ? through the years 1915?1945 and, in so doing, reveals the reach of modern, total war and the limits of the state trying to safeguard civilian life in an extensive empire. Drawing on records from Britain's Colonial, Foreign, War and Home Offices and other archives alongside newspapers, journals, personal accounts and cultural sources, she connects the histories of the First and Second World Wars, combatants and civilians, men and women, metropole and colony, illuminating how new technologies of warfare shaped culture, politics, and society.

With meticulous care, Jon Furgeson dives into the sea of perspectives and voices in the church and Western culture, bringing the reader on a journey to gain perspective. After clearing the clutter and the confusion, he presents a bold new, yet faithful, way to understand spiritual warfare, to see how it affects every person to the foundations of who they are and how the Spirit of God in Christ acts in the midst of the fallen powers to take broken sinners and turn them into antifragile saints.
