Wer denkt dabei nicht an Bob Marley, an Reggae und gute Laune? Es leben rund 2,8 Millionen Einwohner auf der karibischen Insel und oft gestaltet sich der Alltag der jamaikanischen Bev?lkerung schwierig. Es herrscht eine starke Spaltung in die reiche Ober- und die ?konomisch schlecht situierte Unterschicht. Die Mittelschicht bildet neben der Oberschicht einen recht kleinen Teil der Bewohner der Insel, sodass die Unterschicht in der jamaikanischen Bev?lkerung dominiert. Eine Einteilung, die ungerecht erscheint, und in der Geschichte Jamaikas verwurzelt ist. In vielerlei Hinsicht liegt es nahe zu sagen, dass eine Bev?lkerungsschicht eines Landes oder einer Region einzigartig ist. Auf Jamaika liegt eine Besonderheit vor allem in der Alltagssprache des Gro?teils der Bewohner begr?ndet, denn diese sprechen nicht die Amtssprache der Insel, das Queens Englisch, sondern Patwah. Genau diese Sprache soll in dieser Arbeit genauer beleuchtet werden. Der Schriftsteller, Dichter und Philosoph ?douard Glissant (1928-2011) geht davon aus, dass es sich bei dem jamaikanischen Patwah um keine Kreolsprache handelt, denn er w?rde 'die wunderbare Sprache der jamaikanischen Dichter [...] nicht kreolisch nennen.' Ob und inwiefern Glissant mit dieser Aussage, dass die jamaikanische Sprache keine Kreolsprache sei, dem sprachwissenschaftlichen Konsens entspricht, soll im Fokus dieser Arbeit stehen. Das mag sich so mancher denken, der sich ?berlegt, wie man auf die Idee kommt, sich bei einem so vielf?ltigen Themengebiet, wie dem der Soziolinguistik, ausgerechnet auf die Sprachentwicklung einer kleinen Insel irgendwo in der Karibik -Jamaika- und das dortige Kreol -Patois - zu konzentrieren? Nun - den Ansto? zu dieser Hausarbeit gaben ausgerechnet Kommilitonen, die in ihrem Referat aus Unwissenheit ?ber gerade dieses Thema ein Beispiel vortrugen, das sie als Black English bezeichneten, eine Verwechslung, die niemandem auffiel. Aus diesem Grund soll diese Hausarbeit ein wenig Aufkl?rungsarbeit leisten. Leider kann auf dieses Beispiel nicht genauer eingegangen werden, da es trotz mehrmaligen Nachfragen nicht m?glich war, hierzu ein Handout oder weitere Informationen zu bekommen, weshalb bedauerlicherweise nicht n?her erl?utert werden kann, wo in diesem konkreten Fall der Unterschied zwischen Black English und Patois liegt. Nach einem generellen ?berblick ?ber Pidgin- und Kreolsprachen, zu denen das Patois z?hlt, werden die historischen Hintergr?nde, die zur Entstehung dieser Sprache f?hrten, kurz erl?utert. Obwohl es sich hierbei um sehr umfangreiche Themengebiete handelt, soll aufgrund der L?nge einer Proseminararbeit nur ein kurzer Gesamt?berblick gegeben werden, so wird beispielweise auf die f?r die Pidgin- und Kreolforschung grundlegende lingua franca aus Platzgr?nden nicht eingegangen. F?r tiefergehende Analysen und Forschungsergebnisse wird deshalb auf das Literaturverzeichnis verwiesen. Auch in der Kreolforschung, auf die im 2. Kapitel noch genauer eingegangen wird, spielt das jamaikanische Patois eine wichtige Rolle: die erste Konferenz ?ber Kreolforschung fand 1959 in Jamaika statt. Durch jahrelangen Umgang mit jamaikanischer Musik und Kontakten zu Jamaikanern wuchs mit der Zeit immer mehr das Interesse f?r diese sehr interessante Kreolsprache, weshalb diese Hausarbeit ein willkommener Anlass war, mehr dar?ber zu erfahren. Dank eigener Erfahrungen konnte auch der Bezug zwischen Sprache und Musik hergestellt werden, weshalb auch hierzu einige kurze Erl?uterung folgen werden. Seit ihrer Entdeckung durch Christoph Kolumbus 1494 stand sie unter der Herrschaft der spanischen Krone. Die Versklavung der Urbev?lkerung, der Arawakindiander, f?hrte innerhalb k?rzester Zeit zu ihrem Genozid. Bereits 1500 mussten erste Sklaven, zun?chst wei?e europ?ische H?ftlinge, f?r die Plantagenarbeit eingeschifft werden. Der Pirat Henry Morgan eroberte 1665 die Insel und gliederte sie dem britischen Empire an. Unter britischer Herrschaft entwickelte sich Jamaika zum Hauptumschlagplatz f?r den internationalen Sklavenhandel. Vorsichtige Sch?tzungen gehen davon aus, dass bis zur Sklavenemanzipation 1833 circa 1 Millionen Sklaven aus Afrika nach Jamaika verschleppt wurden. Die formelle Gleichstellung brachte den freigelassenen Sklaven keine Vorteile, da sich im 18.Jahrhundert bereits ein ' ... Plantagenfeudalismus ... Die Bev?lkerung h?rte nicht auf, f?r ihre Forderungen nach mehr Gerechtigkeit und besseren Lebensbedingungen einzutreten, bis K?nigin Elisabeth II. am 6. August 1962 Jamaika in die Unabh?ngigkeit innerhalb des Commonwealth entlie?. In dieser Arbeit soll der Weg Jamaikas in die formale Unabh?ngigkeit von Gro?britannien behandelt werden und als Beispiel f?r das Ende des Empires in der Karibik dienen. Dies erscheint mir deswegen sinnvoll, da durch einen solchen Rahmen die Lebenswelt von Franziskus besser dargestellt werden kann. Keine andere Biografie verdeutlicht meines Erachtens durch ihre Zweiteilung so pr?zis das erwachende Bewusstsein der damaligen Laiengesellschaft. Wenn seine Jugend gerade von der aus den Artusromanen vermittelten ritterlichen Idealit?t gepr?gt war, so steht Franziskus nach seiner Bekehrung pars pro toto f?r die neue Laienfr?mmigkeit, deren Signifikanz die radikale Armut war. Deswegen soll diese im letzten Kapitel einerseits als solche analysiert werden. Grunds?tzlich ist der Unterschied zwischen Arm und Reich unverh?ltnism??ig gro?. Das ?u?ert sich vor allem darin, dass ein Gro?teil der Bev?lkerung unter problematischen Bedingungen lebt. Ein Beispiel f?r ein wirtschaftlich benachteiligtes Gebiet, stellt die Community Cassava Piece dar. Wie viele jamaikanische Elendsviertel ist auch Cassava Piece von Armut, Kriminalit?t und einer geringen Chance auf Bildung gepr?gt. Vor allem der prek?re Zustand der Unterst?tzung von Kindern auf ihrem Bildungsweg, hat den gemeinn?tzigen Verein HELP Jamaica! e.V. dazu veranlasst, die Community mit der Errichtung eines Bildungszentrums zu unterst?tzen. Bei einem dreimonatigen Praktikum im HELP Jamaica! Education Center und dem damit verbundenen Aufenthalt in Cassava Piece, Gullyside, konnte ich ein Forschungsprojekt in Zusammenarbeit mit einer Praktikantin realisieren, welches sich mit der Herkunft der Kinder, die das Bildungszentrum regelm??ig besuchen, besch?ftigte. In einer ersten Untersuchung war aufgefallen, dass die Kinder die auf der Centerside leben, h?ufiger das EC besuchten, als die Kinder von der Gullyside. Dies veranlasste uns Umfragen auf der Gullyside durchzuf?hren, um die Gr?nde f?r die geringe Teilnahme der Kinder in Erfahrung zu bringen. Ein halbes Jahr sp?ter f?hrte ich eine zweite Analyse durch, welche nach wie vor den Eindruck einer geringen Teilnahme der Kinder von der Gullyside best?tigte. Die Forschungsfrage lautet wie folgt: Worin bestehen die gesellschaftlichen Probleme und Konflikte im Einzelnen, die Einfluss auf die Teilnahmem?glichkeiten der Kinder haben, um resultierend daraus Problembew?ltigungsstrategien abzuleiten? Schlie?lich besteht das Ziel dieser Arbeit darin, aufzuzeigen, wodurch die Teilnahmem?glichkeiten der Kinder an dem Bildungsprojekt konkret beeinflusst werden, um dadurch die Herausforderungen, denen der Verein gegen?ber steht, zu verdeutlichen. ＜p＞Seminar paper from the year 2015 in the subject Politics - International Politics - Region: Far East, grade: D (Distinction), Murdoch University, course: Development Studies, language: English, abstract: This essay analyses the key stakeholders representing Chinese aid and subsequently discusses the opportunities and challenges of Chinese aid to the Islanders. It argues that Chinese aid is commercially driven. Although it has been provided for strategic interests, it has further offered new opportunities and challenges for the Pacific countries. The essay first examines the Chinese rise and the characteristics of its international aid programmes. Next it focuses on the role of development aid in the Pacific and determines whether aid has been utilised for political gains. Over the last two decades, China has emerged as a leading provider of development aid assistance in developing countries in Africa, Latin America and in recent times, in the Pacific Islands. China's quest to maintain its increasing population and continue to expand its economic growth at world stage level has exacerbated China's engagement with resource developing countries. This increasing intensification of China's development aid programme in developing countries has been prominent towards the late 1990s, mostly driven by the China 'go out' strategy. The 'go out' strategy is China's aid model that combines both private and State-Owned Enterprises (SEOs) to venture into resource-based countries to create market-led investment through support from the Chinese government. The overarching focus of China's development aid is to assist other developing countries achieve their self-development objectives. The Chinese policy is framed within the context of accessibility to natural resources, such as oil, mining and gas in exchange for promoting growth in developing countries. This approach to aid seems to be changing the way development aid had been delivered. But critics of rising Chinese aid and diplomacy particularly in the Pacific Island countries are suspicious and doubtful of what Chinese motivation in Oceania could be. Some scholars, for instance Henderson and Reilly (2003), unequivocally claim that Chinese intensification in Pacific countries will destabilise the relationship between the United States and the Island countries, alluding to the Cold War between China and the US. Similarly, Windybank (2005) asserts that Chinese aid is given as a recipe to undermine Taiwan's interest. However, others have argued that Chinese aid in the Pacific is commercially led and geared towards increasing aid visibility and providing alternatives for the Islanders, and not geopolitical in nature.＜/p＞ ＜p＞I hold a Masters degree in Development Studies and a Bachelor degree in Education with several years experience in teaching, training and capacity building. ＜p＞The “Dialogue between and Christian and a Hindu about Religion” (Jav?basv?la aika kr?st??n aura aika h?du ke b?ca mo im?na ke upara) was written in about 1751 by Giuseppe Maria da Gargnano with help from his Capuchin friend and colleague, Cassiano da Macerata, and from an unnamed Brahmin teacher. This teacher apparently taught Giuseppe Maria to read Hindustani and some Sanskrit, instructed him in the basics of Hindu religion, and corrected the Hindustani text of the “Dialogue”. A copy of the Hindustani text was first presented to the raja of Bettiah in 1751. Subsequently, an undetermined number of hand-made copies were distributed among persons in the Bettiah area. A copy of the Hindustani text in an Indian script related to nagari, dated in 1751, together with an Italian version was sent to Rome and is now in the Vatican Library (Borg. ind. 11).
