Bismarck: A Life A Life【電子書籍】[ Jonathan Steinberg ]

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】Bismarck: A Life A Life【電子書籍】[ Jonathan Steinberg ]

This is the life story of one of the most interesting human beings who ever lived. A political genius who remade Europe and united Germany between 1862 and 1890 by the sheer power of his great personality. It takes the reader into close proximity with a human being of almost superhuman abilities. We see him through the eyes of his secretaries, his old friends, his neighbours, his enemies and the press. Otto von Bismarck 'made' Germany but never 'ruled' it. For twenty eight years he acted as a prime minister without a party. He made speeches, brilliant in content but hesitant in delivery, and rarely addressed a public meeting. He planned three wars and after a certain stage in his career always wore military uniform to which he had no claim. The 'Iron Chancellor', the image of Prussian militarism, suffered from hypochondria and hysteria. Contemporaries called him a 'dictator' and several observers credited him with 'demonic' powers'. They were not wrong. The sheer power of his remarkable 'sovereign sel' awed even his enemies. William I observed that it was hard to be emperor under a man like Bismarck. He towered physically and intellectually over his contemporaries. His spoken and written prose sparkled with wit, insight, grand visions and petty malice. He united Germany and transformed Europe like Napoleon before and Hitler after him but with neither their control of the state nor command of great armies. He was and remained a royal servant. This new biography explores the greatness and limits of a huge and ultimately destructive self. It uses the diaries and letters of his contemporaries to explore the most remarkable figure of the nineteenth century, a man who never said a dull thing or wrote a slack sentence. A political genius who combined creative and destructive traits, generosity and pettiness, tolerance and ferocious enmity, courtesy and rudeness - in short, not only the most important nineteenth-century statesman but by far the most entertaining.

Taft and the first decade of the Progressive era, that tumultuous time when the nation was coming unseamed and reform was in the air. Winner of the Carnegie Medal. The gap between rich and poor has never been wider...legislative stalemate paralyzes the country...corporations resist federal regulations...spectacular mergers produce giant companies...the influence of money in politics deepens...bombs explode in crowded streets...small wars proliferate far from our shores...a dizzying array of inventions speeds the pace of daily life. These unnervingly familiar headlines serve as the backdrop for Doris Kearns Goodwin's highly anticipated The Bully Pulpit--a dynamic history of the first decade of the Progressive era, that tumultuous time when the nation was coming unseamed and reform was in the air. The story is told through the intense friendship of Theodore Roosevelt and William Howard Taft--a close relationship that strengthens both men before it ruptures in 1912, when they engage in a brutal fight for the presidential nomination that divides their wives, their children, and their closest friends, while crippling the progressive wing of the Republican Party, causing Democrat Woodrow Wilson to be elected, and changing the country's history. The Bully Pulpit is also the story of the muckraking press, which arouses the spirit of reform that helps Roosevelt push the government to shed its laissez-faire attitude toward robber barons, corrupt politicians, and corporate exploiters of our natural resources. The muckrakers are portrayed through the greatest group of journalists ever assembled at one magazine--Ida Tarbell, Ray Stannard Baker, Lincoln Steffens, and William Allen White--teamed under the mercurial genius of publisher S. S. McClure. Goodwin's narrative is founded upon a wealth of primary materials. The correspondence of more than four hundred letters between Roosevelt and Taft begins in their early thirties and ends only months before Roosevelt's death. Edith Roosevelt and Nellie Taft kept diaries. The muckrakers wrote hundreds of letters to one another, kept journals, and wrote their memoirs. The letters of Captain Archie Butt, who served as a personal aide to both Roosevelt and Taft, provide an intimate view of both men. The Bully Pulpit, like Goodwin's brilliant chronicles of the Civil War and World War II, exquisitely demonstrates her distinctive ability to combine scholarly rigor with accessibility. It is a major work of history--an examination of leadership in a rare moment of activism and reform that brought the country closer to its founding ideals.

As an older, cannier politician he co-founded the original Republican party, setting the course of American political partisanship. Finally, having pioneered a foreign policy based on economic sanctions, he took the United States into a high-risk conflict, becoming the first wartime president and, despite the odds, winning. Now Noah Feldman offers an intriguing portrait of this elusive genius and the constitutional republic he created--and how both evolved to meet unforeseen challenges. Madison hoped to eradicate partisanship yet found himself giving voice to, and institutionalizing, the political divide. Madison's lifelong loyalty to Thomas Jefferson led to an irrevocable break with George Washington, hero of the American Revolution. Madison closely collaborated with Alexander Hamilton on the Federalist papers--yet their different visions for the United States left them enemies. Alliances defined Madison, too. The vivacious Dolley Madison used her social and political talents to win her husband new supporters in Washington--and define the diplomatic customs of the capital's society. Madison's relationship with James Monroe, a mixture of friendship and rivalry, shaped his presidency and the outcome of the War of 1812. We may be more familiar with other Founding Fathers, but the United States today is in many ways Madisonian in nature. Madison predicted that foreign threats would justify the curtailment of civil liberties. He feared economic inequality and the power of financial markets over politics, believing that government by the people demanded resistance to wealth. Madison was the first Founding Father to recognize the importance of public opinion, and the first to understand that the media could function as a safeguard to liberty. The Three Lives of James Madison is an illuminating biography of the man whose creativity and tenacity gave us America's distinctive form of government. His collaborations, struggles, and contradictions define the United States to this day.

Don Quixote's Delusions Travels in Castilian Spain【電子書籍】[ Miranda France ]

A humorous and affectionate look at modern Spain, and a celebration of the country's greatest book, from the pen of a brilliant young writer.

When in 1987 Miranda France spent a year living in Madrid, the post-dictatorship ebullience was at its height. Pornography and soft drugs were legalised alongside more basic freedoms, such as divorce, party-affiliation and kissing in the street. In 1998 she returned to make a journey through the great cities and towns of central Spain - Madrid, Toledo, Segovia, Salamanca and others. With the new prosperity, much has changed.

But much has also endured, as she learns from the people she meets, who include a private detective, a shepherd, various nuns, two belly dancers and a Castilian separatist. She also discovers that Cervantes' DON QUIXOTE' published in 1605 and the most translated book after the Bible - is a work of genius which still helps to explain the Spanish character: today's Spaniards still suffer from Don Quixote's delusions, and are as stubborn, inflexible and unrealistic as they have always been.

“A revolution is a struggle to the death between the future and the past.”

Fidel Castro was perhaps the most charismatic and controversial head of state in modern times.

Castro took power on New Year’s Day in 1959 serenaded by the Western media for toppling dictator Fulgencio Batista and promising democracy.

He soon revealed that his goal was to impose Communist rule.

He exiled clergy, took over Catholic schools and expropriated businesses.

Firing squads and dungeons eliminated rivals and dissenters.

A dictatorial pariah to many, he became a hero and inspiration for many of the world's poor, defiantly charting an independent and revolutionary path for Cuba over nearly half a century.

This collection of Castro’s speeches provide a revealing look into the mind and motives of a political and tactical genius who took everlasting delight in causing the United States to “turn tail and run,” after the crushing defeat of The Bay of Pigs invasion.

FIDEL CASTRO (1926?2016) was a Cuban revolutionary who governed the Republic of Cuba for 47 years as Prime Minister. Fidel towered over Cuba for decades, fiercely rebelling against the United States under a communist ideology that promised equality and happiness but produced very little of it, instead leading millions to flee the state he took over. Under his administration, Cuba became a one-party socialist state, industry and businesses were nationalized, and state socialist reforms were implemented throughout society.

The Republican Party, Apostles Of Failure, Unfit To Govern【電子書籍】[ Richard J. Weisberg ]

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】The Republican Party, Apostles Of Failure, Unfit To Govern【電子書籍】[ Richard J. Weisberg ]

The purpose of this book is to demonstrate on an intensively researched factual basis that the GOP’s extreme, ideological two-pronged laissez-faire agenda of limited government and low taxes on the wealthy has proven very destructive. Since the mid-1970s, the GOP has successfully promoted an ideological, free-market, anti-government, anti-tax fantasy. The goal of this fantasy is the creation of a society in which the productive genius of the very wealthy is unconstrained by heavy taxation, and a totally unfettered market is allowed to work its magic, a combination supposedly guaranteeing utopian results. In the GOP’s view government is seen as the primary impediment to the achievement of this free-market utopia. Consequently, the GOP’s legislative vision focuses on privatization and the elimination of government agencies, or neutering their programmatic impact through extensive deregulation, while maintaining an obscenely preferential tax system favoring the wealthiest Americans.

The limited government component of the GOP’s agenda, which opposes virtually any government intervention in the economy, is a relatively new deviation from how America has historically managed its economy. Indeed, it is a rather novel idea. There is simply no known historical example of a successful, major capitalist state that has failed to rely on a robust regulatory regime and significant government intervention in support of its economy. Rather, collaboration and cooperation between the government and the private sector has played a central role in the development of virtually every successful industrial market economy. Conversely, unregulated capitalism is a proven prescription for failure. In the US, as stated by the economic historian, Michael Lind, collaboration between the government and the private sector in the development of the American economy “is not alien to the American tradition. It is the American tradition.”

The GOP’s vision is far from that of the Founding Fathers. It is also far from the vision of Adam Smith. Indeed, the GOP’s agenda has degenerated into an extreme, destructive mutation of the system contemplated by Smith. Moreover, every time the GOP has had the opportunity to implement its agenda it has failed, often catastrophically, most recently in 2007. Essentially, the GOP and its base have evolved into a strange cult whose members hew religiously to a delusional utopian vision, and unstintingly follow and support the cult leaders regardless of how many times their predictions of imminent fulfillment fail. In short, over the last four decades GOP has proven itself to be an apostle of failure and unfit to govern. The situation has only worsened with the recent election of Donald Trump.

Operation Iraqi Freedom What Went Right and Why, What Went Wrong and Why【電子書籍】[ Walter J. Boyne ]

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】Operation Iraqi Freedom What Went Right and Why, What Went Wrong and Why【電子書籍】[ Walter J. Boyne ]

From the New York Times bestselling author of Weapons of Desert Storm comes Walter J. Boyne's Operation Iraqi Freedom.

No war has ever had the intensive media coverage of the 2003 war in Iraq, and none has ever had such monumental second-guessing. Months before the war began, domestic and international pundits painted a gloomy picture of a new Vietnam or of a nuclear Armageddon that would see Israel reduced to ruins.

The war started with a brilliant series of pre-emptive bangs that shattered Iraqi leadership and seized the most valuable areas of Iraq. How did the US military machine, assumed to have insufficient air power, too few troops, and little momentum take a country the size of California within three weeks?

In the 1991 victory in the Gulf War, the United States lead a much larger coalition force into a heavy air campaign followed by a lightening quick ground campaign. In the years that followed, the United States military experienced a continuing series of reductions in the national defense budget.

What was left unrecorded was the incredible degree of competence with which the US military leadership managed the reduction in resources, balancing force structures against personnel requirements against procurement needs and logistic realities.

Any one considering the great military victory achieved in Iraq must ask the following questions: Who was bright enough to plan to have the weapons systems in the right place at the right time? Who orchestrated this vast complex array of sophisticated military machinery-ships, submarines, missiles, armor, and soldiers-all needing fuel, ammunition and water?

The answer is the much-maligned civil and military leaders of the American defense establishment, working in concert with the most advanced defense-based corporations in the world. While there were those anxious to parade the iniquities of a two-billion dollar bomber, most often failed to appreciated the genius required to conceive of, much less create a system which can use a satellite to send signals to a B-1B to program a precision guided missile to take out a Soviet T-72 tank parked in a mosque-without damaging the mosque!

Admittedly, there were lapses in the Iraqi war, such as the looting of museums by members of the Ba'ath party just a day after many had declared Baghdad liberated and the raids on hospitals, another problem that could have easily been remedied by a show of U.S. presence and force. And there were technological complications as well, including the aching misfortune of death by friendly fire. The author deals with these shortcomings in a straightforward manner.

Operation Iraqi Freedom: What Went Right and Why; What Went Wrong and Why gives intimate insight into the way in which the armed services, particularly the United States Air Force, managed to overcome genuine budgetary, political, and military difficulties to create the finest military force in the world, one that operated with the most extreme care to avoid collateral damage and to prevent loss of life.

At the Publisher's request, this title is being sold without Digital Rights Management Software (DRM) applied.

Policing a Perplexed Society【電子書籍】[ Sir Robert Mark ]

Should policemen be armed? Do they want to be? How fair is police interrogation? Are the police too tough on demonstrators? How often are the guilty acquitted? Do we get the police force we deserve? Originally published in 1977, Sir Robert Mark considers these and many other issues.

His period as Commissioner of the Metropolitan Police Force would mark something of an epoch, not only because of the challenge of brutal terrorism or his success as a leader, but because he was a bold innovator, thoughtful and articulate, whose work could be readily assessed because he believed in ‘telling the public all you can’ (the official memorandum on this appears here as an appendix). One change affecting the CID, described in this book, is characterised by Sir Robert himself as the most important single change since the Metropolitan Police was founded by his namesake Sir Robert Peel.

The opening chapter describes the organisation and functioning of this country’s police at the time, the way in which they epitomise and are restricted by a free society and alone see the whole picture of criminal justice ? in a sense here Sir Robert speaks over the heads of the legal profession to the public. The next important chapter contains the first open discussion of modern police-army cooperation in this country, but Sir Robert emphasises that a democratic society cannot be controlled by force and that the police exist for the maintenance of public order, irrespective of party, of sectional interests and of the government of the day. They are an example of the British genius for successful institutional compromise.

Subsequent chapters examine these themes in more detail and from different angles; discuss manpower limitations and maldistribution; emphasise how the individual police officer, man or woman, is the anvil on which society beats out the problems of social inequality, racial prejudice and ghettoes, weak and ineffectual legislation. There are chapters on violence and on that London speciality, the demonstration. In the author’s view, the police officer, daily thrown back on his understanding of basic Christian precepts, has now left his Victorian ‘artisan status’ far behind ? and the present Metropolitan Commissioner compels consideration of the police officer’s point of view.

All or Nothing How Trump Recaptured America【電子書籍】[ Michael Wolff ]

"He is FAKE NEWS, a total LOSER, and no one should waste their time or money in buying this boring and obviously fictitious book!" Donald Trump, President of the United States

"Gripping-a veritable harvest of slime, sycophancy and sleaze that tells the story of Trump 2.0, an aggrieved pugilist waging a 'life or death' campaign." New York Times

"Michael Wolff... the shrewdest and most colourful chronicler of the Trump years," Sunday Times

All or Nothing is the final chapter in Wolff's Fire and Fury series. With extraordinary behind-the-scenes access, it follows every turn of Donald Trump's third presidential campaign.

In disgrace after the January 6 attack on the Capitol and sent into exile, Trump immediately sputters back to life. To the shock of the Republican Party leadership, the Trump base has not abandoned him. Hardly a year on, he is as strong as any challenger has ever been. The American establishment is stunned by his comeback and determined to stop it and hold him accountable for his abuses of law and power. Equally, he has vowed retribution on anyone who tries to stand in his way. The 2024 presidential race is elemental: the system breaks Donald Trump or Donald Trump breaks the system.

Michael Wolff tells this story from inside the Trump campaign. Through the sources he has cultivated over his ten years of writing about Donald Trump, including people who are with Trump on a daily basis, as well as his own first-hand reporting, we get a nearly moment-by-moment picture of the pendulum mood swings, the casual cruelties, the demands for obeisance, the preternatural resolve or otherworldly levels of denial, and the certain flashes of showman genius of the new president.

Praise for Fire and Fury, Siege and Landslide

"A book to shake America to its foundations" TheGuardian
"Cruel, unforgiving, muckracking, scandalous. I couldn't stop reading it." The Telegraph

"Hilarious and frightening, and often reads like a Hollywood gossip column" Financial Times

"Smart, vivid and intrepid," The New York Times

Sermons by the Late Rev.

THE Rev. Charles Wesley was descended from a long line of learned and pious ancestors, who had the honour of being sufferers, in the different ages wherein they lived, for their steady adherence to their religious principles.

His great-grandfather, Bartholomew Wesley, John, son to him, and his maternal grandfather the celebrated Samuel Annesley,* LL. D. first cousin to Lord Annesley, Earl of Anglesea, were all ejected from their livings by the act of uniformity, and enrolled amongst those illustrious names who chose rather to sacrifice every worldly advantage than violate their conscience; affording bright examples of heroic firmness and Christian resignation, under the oppressions of a violent party and malicious enemies.

His father, the Rev. Samuel Wesley, quitted the Dissenters when a boy, from reading a defence of the death of King Charles I. From a private academy he entered himself at Exeter College, Oxford, where by his erudition and abilities he soon acquired academic honours, and maintained himself without the assistance of his friends on a slender stipend, till he obtained orders and a curacy. His loyalty being so remarkable at such an age, he was strongly solicited by the party of James II. to support the measures of the court in favour of popery, with promises of high preferment. But he absolutely refused to read the declaration; and when surrounded by courtiers, soldiers, and informers, preached a bold and pointed discourse from Daniel, 3:17, 18: “If it be so, our God whom we serve is able to deliver us from the burning fiery furnace, and he will deliver us out of thine hand, O king. But if not, be it known to thee, O king, that we will not serve thy gods, nor worship the golden image which thou hast set up:”ーevincing an unequivocal proof that a person of high church principles may be a true friend of the Protestant cause, and of the liberty of the subject.

When the glorious revolution took place in 1688, he was the first who wrote in defence of it, and dedicated the book to Queen Mary, who so much approved the performance that she gave him the livings of Epworth and Wroote in Lincolnshire, and appointed him Chaplain-extraordinary to herself. All this family were educated at the university of Oxford, and became Masters of Arts and Students or Fellows at their respective colleges.

The Rev. Samuel Wesley married very early in life the daughter of Dr. Annesley, a woman of extraordinary intellect and eminent accomplishments; but her great characteristic was piety, which she so sedulously instilled into the minds of her young children, that they ever attributed to her instructions (under Divine Providence) the principles and habits of order which distinguished their conduct through life. By this lady he had nineteen children. He destined his three sons from their birth to the church, should their inclinations accord with his wishes; and he was not disappointed. His eldest son Samuel was entered King’s scholar at Westminster school, and sent to Christ-Church, where he became Student, and was solicited, as soon as he had attained his Master’s degree, to supply the place of usher at Westminster, in which employment he remained 20 years. He took orders under the patronage of Bishop Atterbury, to whom his unalienable attachment blocked up every avenue of preferment, and prevented his being elected one of the masters of that seminary. He attained much celebrity by his poetical talents, and lived in habits of intimacy with Lord Oxford, Pope, and Swift; and the Dean, though himself a Whig, was a steady friend to his family. In this circle his wit and literature were held in high estimation. But genius was his lowest excellence; he was a man of inflexible integrity and active benevolence. The infirmary for the sick and poor at Westminster was first projected by him, and his strenuous endeavours eminently promoted its success. He was indefatigable in the cause of morals and religion; and if his notions of church government were carried to excess, his public adherence to a friend in disgrace, when he foresaw it must preclude his own advancement, was meritorious. On quitting Westminster he resided at Tiverton, and was head master of the grammar school, where he ended his days, much honoured and lamented, and where his memory is still cherished with respect.

CrossReach Publications

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】A History of New England with Particular Reference to the Denomination of Christians Called Baptist Volumes I & II【電子書籍】[ Isaac Backus ]

History has been so often written and improved, either for party purposes, or mere amusement, that some serious persons have been ready to treat it as a thing foreign to religion, and of little service to mankind. Yet the same persons will readily own, that nothing teaches like experience; and what is true history but the experiences of those who have gone before us? of which perhaps none have been more remarkable, since the affairs of Canaan, than those of this country. And as the present contests about liberty and government are very great, they call loudly for all the light therein that can be gained from every quarter.

Mr. Rollin, in his ancient history, says, “The powers that be are ordained of God; but neither every use that is made of this power, nor every means for the attainment of it, are from God, though every power be of him. And when we see these governments degenerating, sometimes to violence, factions, despotic sway and tyranny, ’tis wholly to the passions of mankind that we must ascribe those irregularities which are directly opposite to the primitive institution of states; and which a superior wisdom afterwards reduces to order, always making them contribute to the execution of his designs, full of equity and justice. This scene highly deserves our attention and admiration. It is with a view of making the reader attentive to this object, that I think it incumbent on me to add to the account of facts and events what regards the manners and customs of nations; because these shew their genius and character, which we may call, in some measure, the soul of history.”

Now it may well be supposed, that men who are striving for more power over others than belongs to them, will not nor cannot set either their own or their opponents’ “genius and character” in their just light. And if it should be found, that nearly all the histories of this country which are much known, have been written by persons who thought themselves invested with power to act as lawgivers and judges for their neighbors, under the name either of orthodoxy, or of immediate power from heaven, the inference will be strong, that our affairs have never been set in so clear light as they ought to be; and if this is not indeed the case I am greatly mistaken; of which the following account will enable the reader to judge for himself.

CrossReach Publications

Guangzhou: How the City Lives【電子書籍】[ Ozone Books ]

Global Cities: How the World Really Lives is a groundbreaking nonfiction series that peels back the layers of the world’s most fascinating cities ? not through tourist itineraries or historical timelines, but through lived experience, overheard conversations, late-night snacks, and the hidden rituals that make urban life both maddening and magical.

???

Forget what you think you know about Chinese megacities. Guangzhou doesn’t shout ? it simmers. Tucked along the sultry curve of the Pearl River Delta, this is China’s southern soul: a city of steamed dumplings and steel towers, Cantonese cursing and Buddhist incense, global trade and alleyway silence. In this vivid, voice-driven portrait, Global Cities takes you beyond the clich?s and right into the tiled kitchens, neon riverfronts, late-night karaoke booths, wholesale labyrinths, and ghost-strewn temples of a metropolis that’s as elusive as it is essential.

You’ll start with a sunrise in a fish market and end with a noodle bowl at midnight. In between, there’s a lot of laughter, some low-grade climate panic, a sneaker startup built on filial guilt, and more balconies than any zoning board could possibly approve. The book captures how Guangzhou really lives: through food that doubles as philosophy, faith that hides in incense smoke and apartment stairwells, and architecture that improvises as boldly as the locals do.

With a tone somewhere between a long dinner party anecdote and a meticulously observed field report, this is city writing with flavor ? both literal and literary. Think Bill Bryson meets Midnight Diner, but with more scaffolding, subtropical rainfall, and casual genius. If you’ve ever wondered how a city can be ancient, futuristic, ordinary, and unforgettable all at once ? this book is your answer.

Part social history, part cultural meditation, part street-level joyride, Guangzhou: How the World Really Lives is the definitive portrait of a city that quietly powers the global economy while frying tofu with poetic restraint. Whether you’re a curious traveler, a design nerd, a food obsessive, or just someone who likes reading about cities that still surprise even their own residents ? this is your next favorite book.

Heydrich, Hitler's Most Evil Henchman【電子書籍】[ Charles Wighton ]

THE MAN WITH THE IRON HEART
Hitler called him "The man with the iron heart"ーyet Reinhard Heydrich was utterly different from those other iron men who served the F?hrer. Gifted with intellect, charm and great courage, Heydrich used his outstanding talents to create the Nazi Security Service, the notorious SD (Sicherheitsdienst), thereby becoming one of the most powerful figuresーperhaps the most evil influence of allーin Nazi Germany.
Charles Wighton, through unprecedented co-operation on both sides of the Iron Curtain, has had access to top secret Nazi Party files, to official sources in East Germany, to highly secret records in Czechoslovakiaーand to the frank recollections of Heydrich's widow. The result is a fascinatingly detailed revelation of the rise of this diabolical genius.
Through Heydrich's racial campaigns, which gathered their own momentum after his death, six million Jews were murdered by 1945. And yet this son of a cultured, upper-middle-class Roman Catholic family, who became the real power behind Himmler, was himself blackmailed by the F?hrer for possessing non-Aryan blood.
In addition to clarifying this aspect of Heydrich's astonishing career, the author throws new light, too, on "Plan Ost", the blueprint for the extermination of thirty million Slavs, and on the mystery surrounding Heydrich's assassination in 1942.
Here, then, is the full story of the man with the iron heartーHeydrich, Hitler's most evil henchman.

THERE is one mind common to all individual men. Every man is an inlet to the same and to all of the same. He that is once admitted to the right of reason is made a freeman of the whole estate. What Plato has thought, he may think; what a saint has felt, he may feel; what at any time has befallen any man, he can understand. Who hath access to this universal mind is a party to all that is or can be done, for this is the only and sovereign agent. Of the works of this mind history is the record. Its genius is illustrated by the entire series of days. Man is explicable by nothing less than all his history. Without hurry, without rest, the human spirit goes forth from the beginning to embody every faculty, every thought, every emotion, which belongs to it, in appropriate events. But the thought is always prior to the fact; all the facts of history preexist in the mind as laws. Each law in turn is made by circumstances predominant, and the limits of nature give power to but one at a time. A man is the whole encyclopaedia of facts. The creation of a thousand forests is in one acorn, and Egypt, Greece, Rome, Gaul, Britain, America, lie folded already in the first man. Epoch after epoch, camp, kingdom, empire, republic, democracy, are merely the application of his manifold spirit to the manifold world.

Seventeen and Oh Miami, 1972, and the NFL's Only Perfect Season【電子書籍】[ Marshall Jon Fisher ]

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】Seventeen and Oh Miami, 1972, and the NFL's Only Perfect Season【電子書籍】[ Marshall Jon Fisher ]

The definitive chronicle of the 1972 Miami Dolphins, the only undefeated team in NFL historyーfrom award-winning literary sportswriter Marshall Jon Fisher.

The 1972 Miami Dolphins had something to prove. Losers in the previous Super Bowl, a ragtag bunch of overlooked, underappreciated, or just plain old players, they were led by Don Shula, a genius young coach obsessed with obliterating the reputation that he couldn’t win the big game. And as the Dolphins headed into only their seventh season, all eyes were on Miami. For the last time, a city was hosting both national political conventions, and the backdrop to this season of redemption would be turbulent: the culture wars, the Nixon reelection campaign, the strange, unfolding saga of Watergate, and the war in Vietnam.

Generational and cultural divides abounded on the team as well. There were long-haired, bell-bottomed party animals such as Jim “Mad Dog” Mandich, as well as the stylish Marv Fleming and Curtis Johnson, with his supernova afro, playing alongside conservative, straitlaced men like the quarterbacks: Bob Griese and the crew-cut savior, 38-year-old backup Earl Morrall. Larry Csonka and Jim Kiick, nicknamed “Butch and Sundance,” had to make way for a third running back, the outspoken and flamboyant Mercury Morris. But unlike the fractious society around them, this racially and culturally diverse group found a way to meld seamlessly into a team. The perfect team.

Marshall Jon Fisher’s Seventeen and Oh is a compelling, fast-paced account of a season unlike any other, diving deep into every game and key events before and after, with thorough portraits of key players, coaches, executives, and more.

Berlin Portrait of a City Through the Centuries【電子書籍】[ Rory MacLean ]

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】Berlin Portrait of a City Through the Centuries【電子書籍】[ Rory MacLean ]

A “sprawling, experimental, and . . . deeply enthralling” history of the German capital city (Booklist, starred review).

A Washington Post Best Book of the Year

“ Berlin is the most extraordinary work of history I've ever read . . . It's a work of imagination, reflection, reverence, perplexity, and criticism that reveals as much about the author's precocious mind as it does about the city he adores . . . Stunningly beautiful writing.” ーThe Washington Post

Berlin is a city of fragments and ghosts, a laboratory of ideas, the fount of both the brightest and darkest designs of history's most bloody century. The once arrogant capital of Europe was devastated by Allied bombs, divided by the Wall, then reunited and reborn as one of the creative centers of the world. Today it resonates with the echo of lives lived. No other city has repeatedly been so powerful and fallen so low; few other cities have been so shaped and defined by individual imaginations .

Berlin tells the volatile history of Europe's capital over five centuries through a series of intimate portraits of two dozen key residents: the medieval balladeer whose suffering explains the Nazis' rise to power; the genius Jewish chemist who invented poison gas for First World War battlefields and then the death camps; the iconic mythmakers like Christopher Isherwood, Leni Riefenstahl, and David Bowie, whose heated visions are now as real as the city's bricks and mortar. Alongside are portrayed some of the countless ordinary Berliners whose lives can only be imagined: the ambitious prostitute who refashioned herself as a baroness, the fearful Communist Party functionary who helped to build the Wall, and the American spy from the Midwest whose patriotism may have turned the course of the Cold War.

Berlin is a history book like no other, with an originality that reflects the nature of the city itself. In its architecture, through its literature, in its movies and songs, Berliners have conjured their hard capital into a place of fantastic human fantasy. No other city has so often surrendered itself to its own seductive myths. Berlin captures, portrays, and propagates the remarkable story of those myths and their makers.

“MacLean reveals his prowess as a storyteller, flawlessly weaving together history, facts, and folklore . . . [He] brings this 'city of fragments and ghosts,' with its fractured and volatile past, to life.” ーPublishers Weekly (starred review)

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】Gun Barons The Weapons That Transformed America and the Men Who Invented Them【電子書籍】[ John Bainbridge, Jr. ]

"A dazzling epic of inventors, wars, arms, and men." ? Daniel Mark Epstein, author of The Lincolns: Portrait of a Marriage

"Deeply researched, rich in insight, Gun Barons widens our understanding even as it enchants us with its masterful prose." ? Jim Rasenberger, author of Revolver: Sam Colt and the Six-Shooter That Changed America

"John Bainbridge, Jr. cuts through the myths, romance, and propaganda to deliver true accounts of inspired drive and monomania, of catastrophic mistakes and vaults of genius." ? Doug J. Swanson, author of Cult of Glory: The Bold and Brutal History of the Texas Rangers

"This book proves that guns have shaped, and continue to shape, our world." ? Howard E. Wasdin, author of Seal Team Six: The Incredible Story of an Elite Sniper

"A compelling tale of action and ingenuity." ? James Grant, author of John Adams: Party of One

***

It's the nineteenth century. As America prepares for civil war, five men living within ninety miles of one another will change the course of history. The invention and refinement of the repeating firearmーthe precursor to today's automatic weaponsーmeans life in America and beyond will never be the same again.

In this riveting work of narrative history, veteran reporter John Bainbridge, Jr. vividly brings to life the five charismatic and idiosyncratic men at the heart of the story: the huckster and hard-living Samuel Colt; the cunning former shirt-maker Oliver Winchester; the constant tinkerer Horace Smith; the resilient and innovative businessman Daniel Wesson; and the skinny abolitionist Christopher Spencer. As the men competed ferociously, each trying to corner the market for repeating weapons, invention and necessity collided in a perfect storm: America was crashing violently towards furious sectarianism, irrevocable tensions, and, of course, bloodthirsty war.

Though capable of firing many times without reloading, astonishingly, the new guns faced a government backlash for using too much ammunition. Sold directly to soldiers, sometimes just as they were walking into battle, they quickly became coveted possessions, both during the Civil War and in the conquering of the Westーand thus America's romance with personal firearms was born.

Wide-ranging and vividly told, this is a gripping story of tenacity, conviction, innovation, and pure heartless greed.

To Die for the People【電子書籍】[ Huey Newton ]

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】To Die for the People【電子書籍】[ Huey Newton ]

A fascinating, first-person account of a historic era in the struggle for black empowerment in America.

Long an iconic figure for radicals, Huey Newton is now being discovered by those interested in the history of America's social movements. Was he a gifted leader of his people or a dangerous outlaw? Were the Black Panthers heroes or terrorists?

Whether Newton and the Panthers are remembered in a positive or a negative light, no one questions Newton's status as one of America's most important revolutionaries. To Die for the People is a recently issued classic collection of his writings and speeches, tracing the development of Newton's personal and political thinking, as well as the radical changes that took place in the formative years of the Black Panther Party.

With a rare and persuasive honesty, To Die for the People records the Party's internal struggles, rivalries and contradictions, and the result is a fascinating look back at a young revolutionary group determined to find ways to deal with the injustice it saw in American society. And, as a new foreword by Elaine Brown makes eminently clear, Newton's prescience and foresight make these documents strikingly pertinent today.

Huey Newton was the founder, leader and chief theoretician of the Black Panther Party, and one of America’s most dynamic and important revolutionary philosophers.

"Huey P. Newton's To Die for the People represents one of the most important analyses of the politics of race, black radicalism, and democracy written during the civil rights-Black Power era. It remains a crucial and indispensible text in our contemporary efforts to understand the continuous legacy of social movements of the 1960s and 1970s."
ーPeniel Joseph, author of Waiting Til the Midnight Hour: A Narrative History of Black Power in America

"Huey P. Newton's name, and more importantly, his history of resistance and struggle, is little more than a mystery for many younger people. The name of a third-rate rapper is more familiar to the average Black youth, and that's hardly surprising, for the public school system is invested in ignorance, and Huey P. Newton was a rebel ー and more, a Black Revolutionary . . . who gave his best to the Black Freedom movement; who inspired millions of others to stand."
ーMumia Abu Jamal, political prisoner and author of Jailhouse Lawyers

"Newton's ability to see theoretically, beyond most individuals of his time, is part of his genius. The opportunity to recognize that genius and see its applicability to our own times is what is most significant about this new edition."
ーRobert Stanley Oden, former Panther, Professor of Government, California State University, Sacramento

The Notorious Life of Ned Buntline A Tale of Murder, Betrayal, and the Creation of Buffalo Bill【電子書籍】[ Julia Bricklin ]

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】The Notorious Life of Ned Buntline A Tale of Murder, Betrayal, and the Creation of Buffalo Bill【電子書籍】[ Julia Bricklin ]

Edward Zane Carroll Judson aka Ned Buntline (1821?1886) was responsible for creating a highly romantic and often misleading image of the American West, albeit one that the masses found irresistible in the mid-to-late nineteenth century. Some scholars estimate that he wrote at least four hundred dime novels over his lifetime, and perhaps as many as six hundred. While he is best known for discovering William Frederick Cody (Buffalo Bill) and making the irrepressible scout a star, Judsonーby that timeーhad already lived five lifetimes himself: he had fought Seminole Indians in Florida; started and bankrupted three newspapers; published dozens of successful novels; agitated for the Know-Nothing party; and fought in the Union Army during the Civil War. Along the way, the fiery redheaded, gray-eyed writer lectured extensively about temperance between drinking bouts. He married eight women, seduced at least one other, and cavorted with prostitutes, one of whom beat him physically and legally.

It wasn’t until 1869 that, en route home from a temperance speaking tour in California, he met Cody in Nebraska, while trying to make contact with another Western star, “Wild Bill” Hickok. Judson’s time with his last three wives overlapped his time with Cody. Their subsequent fight over Judson’s Civil War pension provides not only a unique glimpse into the mind of a narcissistic genius, but also a panoramic view of America’s past forcibly displayed by white, Protestant manhood.

The Notorious Life of Ned Buntline captures the likeness of a man whose life was a landscape littered with contradictions--a man whose readers often forgave his Jekyll-and-Hyde behavior because of his inventive portrayal of a country trying to subdue the last of its natural landscapes and make sense of its teeming cities. It will be, at last, an open-eyed look at the man who sparked an American legend but whose own scandalous life somehow escaped history's limelight.

Symposium (Translated with an Introduction by Benjamin Jowett and a Preface by Friedrich Schleiermacher)【電子書籍】[ Plato ]

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】Symposium (Translated with an Introduction by Benjamin Jowett and a Preface by Friedrich Schleiermacher)【電子書籍】[ Plato ]

Written sometime during the 4th century BC, “Symposium” is one the most poetic and sublime works by the Greek philosopher Plato. The action of the dialogue is set during a party hosted by the poet Agathon to celebrate his first victory in a dramatic competition. The title ‘Symposium’, or ‘Banquet’ refers to the setting of the work, however the more literal translation from the Greek is a ‘drinking party.’ At this party several notable figures from classical antiquity, including Phaedrus, Pausanias, Eryximachus, Aristophanes, Agathon, Alcibiades, and Socrates in turn give speeches in praise of Eros, the god of love. The work at its core is an examination of the genesis, purpose, and nature of love. While it is possible that the circumstances of the work may be based on actual events known to Plato, scholars believe it most likely to be the sole invention of its author. An intriguing dialogue on the subject of love, “Symposium” is a preeminent example of Plato’s philosophical genius and a must read for any student of classical antiquity. This edition is translated with an introduction by Benjamin Jowett, includes a preface by Friedrich Schleiermacher, and a biographical afterword.

Delaney bolsters the image of black freemasonry by establishing the roots of masonry date back to black men which included King Solomon among their ranks.

About the author:

Martin Robison Delany (May 6, 1812 - January 24, 1885) was an African-American abolitionist, journalist, physician, soldier, and writer, and arguably the first proponent of black nationalism. Delany is credited with the Pan-African slogan of "Africa for Africans."

Born as a free person of color in Charles Town, Virginia, now West Virginia (not Charleston, West Virginia) and raised in Chambersburg and Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Delany trained as a physician's assistant. During the cholera epidemics of 1833 and 1854 in Pittsburgh, Delany treated patients, even though many doctors and residents fled the city out of fear of contamination. In this period, people did not know how the disease was transmitted.

Delany traveled in the South in 1839 to observe slavery firsthand. Beginning in 1847, he worked alongside Frederick Douglass in Rochester, New York to publish the North Star. In 1850, Delany was one of the first three black men admitted to Harvard Medical School, but all were dismissed after a few weeks because of widespread protests by white students.

Delany dreamed of establishing a settlement in West Africa. He visited Liberia, a United States colony founded by the American Colonization Society, and lived in Canada for several years, but when the American Civil War began, he returned to the United States. When the United States Colored Troops were created in 1863, he recruited for them. Commissioned as a major in February 1865, Delany became the first African-American field grade officer in the United States Army.

After the Civil War, Delany went to the South, settling in South Carolina. There he worked for the Freedmen's Bureau and became politically active, including in the Colored Conventions Movement. Delany ran unsuccessfully for Lieutenant Governor as an Independent Republican. He was appointed as a trial judge, but he was removed following a scandal. Delany later switched his party affiliation. Waging an Unwinnable War The Communist Insurgency in Malaysia (1948?1989)【電子書籍】[ Lim Cheng Leng ]

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】Waging an Unwinnable War The Communist Insurgency in Malaysia (1948?1989)【電子書籍】[ Lim Cheng Leng ]

Chairman Mao Tse-tung declared: "Every Communist must grasp the truth, 'Political power grows out of the barrel of a gun'..." Mao's dictum provided the guiding principle for the protracted armed struggle of the Communist Party of Malaya/Malaysia over a 40-year period, from the start of its guerrilla war in mid-1948 to the signing of the peace agreement to conclude the futile conflict in early December 1989. Although the CPM saw its contention for power as one continuous and non-stop campaign, the Government side recorded the Communist insurgency as Emergency I (1948-60), punctuated by a somewhat indetermnate interval, and then followed by "undeclared" Emergency II (1968-80). Emergency I ended in abject failure for the Communists. For the winning side, the unprecedented success in counter-insurgency wasthen described as "the only true complete victory over communist insurgency won by a former colonial power (Britain) and a newly emergent nation (Malaya) since 1945 (after World War II). While the first-round insurrection was reportedly initiated by a directive from Moscow, the second round was planned and directed as well as financed in Peking. Following Mao's demse in September 1976, the new paramount ruler in China Deng Xiaoping consigned the banner of revolution to history. It spelled the end of the Commuunist Revolution in Malaya/Malaysia. Rather than a narrative, this book offers an analytical study of the unwinnable war waged by Malayan/Malaysian disciples of the great revolutionary genius and grandmaster Mao Tse-tung.
