【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】Scorpions for Breakfast My Fight Against Special Interests, Liberal Media, and Cynical Politicos to Secure America's Border【電子書籍】[ Jan Brewer ]

Sometime after dark on March 27, 2010, Arizona rancher Robert Krentz was found dead next to his four-wheeler on the grounds of his ranch on the Arizona-Mexico border. Krentz and his dog, Blue, had been missing since that morning. They were last heard from when he radioed his brother to say that he’d found an illegal alien on the property and was going to offer him assistance. The man Krentz encountered that day shot and killed him and his dog, without warning, before escaping to Mexico.

It’s difficult to overstate the impact of Krentz’s death, which turned the issue of Arizona’s unsecured borderーa crisis that the federal government had repeatedly ignoredーinto a national concern. As Arizona sheriff Larry Dever said in his testimony before the Senate Homeland Security Committee, “We cannot sit by while our citizens are terrorized, robbed, and murdered by ruthless and desperate people who enter our country illegally.” This momentum helped pass SB 1070, a bill that authorizes local law enforcement under certain conditions to question persons reasonably suspected of being illegal aliens, which Governor Jan Brewer and the state legislature had been working on for months. With the passage of this controversial bill, the state of Arizona became ground zero in the impassioned debate over illegal immigration. The Democrats and the media went into overdrive, denouncing the state and its governor as racists and Nazis.

Governor Brewer, a lifelong Arizona resident with deep ties to the community, was first elected to the Arizona House of Representatives in 1982, and hasn’t lost an election since. As a state official, she watched with increasing dismay as illegal immigration exploded across Arizona’s border, and noticed the devastating effect it was having on the state. Causing an escalation in violence, an influx of drugs, and prisons and hospitals to fill to overflowing, this problem was not only wreaking havoc on the moral fabric of the community but placing an even greater strain on Arizona’s beleaguered health, educational, and social welfare networks. Growing frustrated with the failure of the federal government to respond to her pleas for assistance, Governor Brewer led the state to action. Scorpions for Breakfast is Brewer’s commonsense account of her fight to secure our nation’s border in the face of persistent federal inaction. Her book is vital reading for all Americans interested in the real change that can happen when local leaders take the initiative to preserve our country and our laws.

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】Cracking Open A Memoir of Struggling, Passages, and Transformations【電子書籍】[ Ph.D. Bud Harris ]

An Engaging Book...Thoughtful, Searching, and Surprisingly Personal

Dr. Harris is a Jungian analyst, author, and life teacher dedicated to the passionate pursuit of self-exploration and the art of living a well-lived life. By being willing to share his own very personal journaling, he shows us the importance of reflecting about our lives in an ongoing way...and even the importance of revisiting these reflections.

Through his re-membering and storytelling, he brings to light the interface between dramatic periods of transformation in his own life and reveals how "past" history is always penetrating the present. During these reflections, it becomes clear how deeply he is wrestling like Jacob with the angel, as he attempts to grasp the creative patterns of life that are trying to be lived through him.

Dr. Harris tells about his surprise when his journaling takes on a life of its own, and shifts like scenes in a dream - a dream created by his greater Self. Like any serious quest, his story has a haunting history with terrors and resistances along the way. He recounts the shocks, surprises, and hard work necessary to pursue self-knowledge and admits how living with awareness and the search for healing and wholeness brings about suffering to his ego, his everyday self. Yet, he tenderly leads us into the spiritual depths of passion, transformation, and renewal, and shares how his devotion to this work forces his transformation and helps him to tap into the joy of creation. Belonging on an Island Birds, Extinction, and Evolution in Hawai'i【電子書籍】[ Daniel Lewis ]

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】Belonging on an Island Birds, Extinction, and Evolution in Hawai'i【電子書籍】[ Daniel Lewis ]

“A book devoted to the beauty of [Hawaiian] birds . . . is a welcome event. [It] will be both an elegy and an important record of what has been lost to us all.” ーW. S. Merwin, Pulitzer Prize?winning poet, The Shadow of Sirius

A lively, rich natural history of Hawaiian birds that challenges existing ideas about what constitutes biocultural nativeness and belonging

This natural history takes readers on a thousand-year journey as it explores the Hawaiian Islands’ beautiful birds and a variety of topics including extinction, evolution, survival, conservationists and their work, and, most significantly, the concept of belonging. Author Daniel Lewis, an award-winning historian and globe-traveling amateur birder, builds this lively text around the stories of four speciesーthe Stumbling Moa-Nalo, the Kaua‘I ‘O‘o, the Palila, and the Japanese White-Eye.

Lewis offers innovative ways to think about what it means to be native and proposes new definitions that apply to people as well as to birds. Being native, he argues, is a relative state influenced by factors including the passage of time, charisma, scarcity, utility to others, short-term evolutionary processes, and changing relationships with other organisms. This book also describes how bird conservation started in Hawai‘i, and the naturalists and environmentalists who did extraordinary work.

“With insight, humor, scholarship, and love, Daniel Lewis illustrates how and why the question of who or what “belongs” somewhere is both deceptively complex and increasingly important in today’s Anthropocene world.” ーRobert J. Cabin, author of Restoring Paradise: Rethinking and Rebuilding Nature in Hawai‘i

“Lewis’s fascinating story of Hawaii is, in microcosm, the history of humans on our fragile Earth.” ーBruce M. Life In America【電子書籍】[ Mike Proko ]

Pacific Book Review
Most of the time, strong opinions about politics and religion aren’t received well. People are easily turned off by other people who give their opinions and turn a deaf ear to those who try to convince them to believe what they believe. However, Michael L. Proko’s collected columns titled “Life in America: Musings, Stories and Opinions about life in the U.S. of A” is both uplifting and entertaining.
In each of his columns, Proko meticulously dissects issues both about the USA and human life. He brings to light issues that we face daily and speaks about them encouragingly. He addresses topics such as human relationships, family, imagination, money, politics, God, children, striving to act like children as adults, making a difference in people’s lives, showing kindness, and forgiveness. He shares experiences such as pool-hopping as an adolescent that gives the reader a sense of authenticity and a glimpse into the type of person Proko is, and the life-lessons he learned.
One of Proko’s primary words of advice is to not give up and make the changes necessary to improve character. This Proko can attest to in a very special and specific way. At the prime of his life, he suffered two strokes and was told his life would never be the same again. He was told to expect permanent paralysis and for a short period, looked into this new way of life, feeling useless and defeated. He soon decided to take charge which meant pushing hard to improve himself physically, mentally and emotionally. Through endless hours of physical therapy and working out, he was able to overcome his physical limitations and prove to himself and those around him that if you work hard enough to change your life for the better, it is possible to jump over hurdles that others see as impossible to overcome. He uses this life experience to encourage his readers to make the changes necessary to better their lives, and to never give up. As a reader, hearing this advice from someone who lost all hope and then worked hard to gain his life back, written with gentleness and without shoving it in the reader’s face, I gladly took this advice.
The most enjoyable aspect of Proko’s book is his memories of being raised under the guidance and love of his grandparents interwoven throughout the work. He refers to simple life lessons taught to him when he was young; giving the same advice to his readers because he believes he is who he is because of their influence in his life. “They taught us how to swim, how to behave like ladies and gentlemen, how to look at life. But most importantly, how to keep your sense of humor when life comes at you. They, too, had made their fair share of mistakes but they had a goal and they just kept on striving to that end. Simple folks. Simpler times. Simple lessons.” This passage sums up his tone of voice throughout the piece. Again, he emphasizes the importance of not giving up. He mentions his grandparents and their influence on his life throughout the book, which gives the reader further evidence the advice he gives is based on experience and wisdom.
This is a refreshing read for anyone who is tired of negativity and prideful political opinions about America and its people. Without stuffing it down the reader’s throat, Proko delivers his advice and opinions carefully and with humor, ending almost every column with, “At least, that’s the way I see it.” Whether or not the reader agrees with what he discusses in each column, that line is a reminder these are merely his opinions based on his life experiences. Life in America is surprisingly cheerful and encouraging, even when it comes to America and its politics. Read it and rediscover your missing voice.

Mami Wata Priestess, through her conversations in a series of collected essays, describes traditional African Vodun and its mystery and beauty. Coming from the perspective of one initiated into the pantheon of the African Mami Wata she gives a unique glimpse into the often misunderstood world of African Vodun. In the pursuit of a doctorate, in African Psychology in the late 1990s, she traveled to Africa to do research but inadvertently found herself...her ancestors, the spirits that gave her life and her destiny. From 1998-2006 she immersed herself in traditional African culture and lay in initiation chambers from Benin to Togo to Ghana returning as the first authentically initiated priestess of the African Mami Wata. And, as a result has been serving the spirits every since.

Her story is the story of every individual born in the diaspora destined to retrace the footsteps of their ancestors and reconnect to a tradition refused them due to the transatlantic slave trade. Her distinctive instructive style delivers highly specialized details and points the audience towards the most direct access to the divine indicating the hallmark of a true initiate of Mami Wata. Within these pages one will be introduced to the majesty of African Vodun and its destined role in bridging the divinities and those destined to the sacred knowledge lost beginning with the Middle Passage. Through this sacred work what lies at the bottom of the sea and throughout the spiritual realm may formally be addressed as it was foretold within the ancient Priesthood of Ifa that such a time would come. Mami Wata Priestess works from Temple Behumbeza, in (Cotonou) Benin, with her husband Hounnon Behumbeza, the Supreme Chief of the pantheon of the African Mami Dan Vodun.

The Line Combat in Korea, January-February 1951【

Many combat veterans refuse to discuss their experiences on the line. With the passage of time and the unreliability of memory, it becomes difficult to understand the true nature of war. In The Line: Combat in Korea, January?February 1951, retired Army colonel William T. Bowers uses firsthand, eyewitness accounts of the Korean War to offer readers an intimate look at the heroism and horror of the battlefront. These interviews of soldiers on the ground are particularly telling because they were conducted by Army historians immediately following combat. Known as the "forgotten war," the action in Korea lasted from June 1950 until July 1953 and was particularly savage for its combatants. During the first few months of the war, American and U.N. soldiers conducted rapid advances and hasty withdrawals, risky amphibious landings and dangerous evacuations, all while facing extreme weather conditions. In early 1951, the first winter of the war, frigid cold and severe winds complicated combat operations. As U.N. forces in Korea retreated from an oncoming Chinese and North Korean attack, U.S. commanders feared they would be forced to withdraw from occupation and admit to a Communist victory. Using interviews and extensive historical research, The Line analyzes how American troops fought the enemy to a standstill over this pivotal two-month period, reversing the course of the war. In early 1951, the war had nearly been lost, but by February's end, there existed the possibility of preserving an independent South Korea. Bowers compellingly illustrates how a series of small successes at the regiment, battalion, company, platoon, squad, and soldier levels ensured that the line was held against the North Korean enemy. The Line is the first of three volumes detailing combat during the Korean War. Each book focuses on the combat experiences of individual soldiers and junior leaders. Bowers enhances our understanding of combat by providing explanatory analysis and supplemental information from official records, giving readers a complete picture of combat operations in this understudied theatre. Through searing firsthand accounts and an intense focus on this brief but critical time frame, The Line offers new insights into U.S. military operations during the twentieth century and guarantees that the sacrifices of these courageous soldiers will not be lost to history.

The Saviour of the World【電子書籍】[ B. B. Warfield ]

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】The Saviour of the World【電子書籍】[ B. B. Warfield ]

I wish to speak to you to-day of the parable of the prodigal son, or, as it is becoming very common to call it, perhaps with greater exactness, the parable of the lost son. I shall not read it to you again. It has already been read in the lesson for the day. And in any event it is too familiar to require that you should be reminded even of the minuter details of the narrative. Probably no passage of the Scriptures is more widely known or more universally admired. The conversation and literature of devotion are full of allusions to it. And in the conversation and literature of the world it has far from an unhonoured place.

It owes the high appreciation it has won, no doubt, in large part to the exquisiteness of its literary form. From this point of view it fully deserves not only the measured praise of a Grotius, but the enthusiastic exclamations of a Trench. It is “the finest of Christ’s parables, filled with true feeling, and painted in the most beautiful colours.” It is “the pearl and crown of all the parables of Scripture.” Nothing could exceed the chaste perfection of the narrative, the picturesque truth of its portraiture, the psychological delicacy of its analysis. Here is a gem of story-telling, which must be pronounced nothing less than artistically perfect, whether viewed in its general impression, or in the elaboration of its details. We must add to its literary beauty, however, the preciousness of the lesson it conveys before we account for the place it has won for itself in the hearts of men. In this setting of fretted gold, a marvel of the artificer, there lies a priceless jewel; and this jewel is displayed to such advantage by its setting that men cannot choose but see and admire.

Firebrands The Untold Story of Four Women Who Made and Unmade Prohibition【電子書籍】[ Gioia Diliberto ]

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】Firebrands The Untold Story of Four Women Who Made and Unmade Prohibition【電子書籍】[ Gioia Diliberto ]

Guaranteed to change how you picture Prohibition, this lively history turns the spotlight on four women in the immediate aftermath of winning the vote who played influential roles on all sides of the Eighteenth and Twenty-First Amendments.

In the popular imagination, the story of Prohibition in America is a story of men and male violence, one full of federal agents fighting gangsters over the sale of moonshine. In contrast, Firebrands is the story of four Jazz Age dynamosーall women ?who were forces behind the passage, the enforcement, the defiance, and, ultimately, the repeal of the Eighteenth Amendment. They battled each other directly, and they learned to marshal clout with cowed and hypocritical legislators, almost all of them men. Their clash over Prohibition stands as the first significant exercise of women’s political power since women gained the right to vote, and their influence on the American political scene wouldn’t be equaled for decades.

In Gioia Diliberto’s fresh and timely take on this period of history, we meet Ella Boole, the stern and ambitious leader of the Woman’s Christian Temperance Union, who campaigned fiercely to introduce Prohibition and fought desperately to keep it alive. We also meet Mabel Walker Willebrandt, the most powerful woman in America at the time, who served as the top federal prosecutor charged with enforcing Prohibition. Diliberto tells the story, too, of silent film star Texas Guinan, who ran New York speakeasies backed by the mob and showed that Prohibition was not only absurd but unenforceable. And, she follows Pauline Morton Sabin, a glamorous Manhattan aristocrat who belatedly recognized the cascading evil in Prohibition and mobilized the movement to kill it.

These women led their opposing forces of “Wets” and “Drys” across a teeming landscape of bootleggers, gangsters, federal agents, temperance fanatics, and cowardly politicians, many of them secret drunks. Building on the momentum of suffrage, they forged a path for the activists who followed during the great civil rights battles of the mid-twentieth century. Yet, they have been largely lost to history. In Firebrands, Diliberto finally gives these dynamic figures their due, creating a varied and dramatic portrait of women wielding power, in politics, society, and popular culture.

Prohibition Years【電子書籍】[ Soren Earthwalker ]

Prohibition Years examines the period from 1920 to 1933 when the Eighteenth Amendment outlawed alcohol in the United States. This era, intended to curb societal ills through social reform, unexpectedly fueled organized crime and economic disruptions. The book argues that Prohibition's negative consequences, such as the rise of speakeasies and bootlegging, outweighed its benefits.

The book dissects how the temperance movement led to the law's passage and then explores its impact on three key areas: the explosion of organized crime, the disruption of the American economy due to lost tax revenue, and the challenges faced by law enforcement. Interestingly, the ban led to a surge in unregulated alcohol production, creating public health issues, and also fostered unprecedented levels of corruption.

By exploring these interwoven challenges, the book offers a comprehensive view of a unique period in US history. Beginning with the historical context, Prohibition Years progresses through the rise of criminal syndicates and economic impacts, culminating in an analysis of the repeal and its lasting legacy. It uses a range of sources, from government documents to personal memoirs, to support its arguments, offering an insightful look at the complexities of legislating morality.

A View of the American Indians【電子書籍】[ Israel Worsley ]

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】A View of the American Indians【電子書籍】[ Israel Worsley ]

"Are the Ten Tribes of Israel lost or missing?... Jews may have found their way to America." - The Eclectic Review (1829)
"Israel Worsley worked over the material gathered by Boudinot and Smith, and added something." -Narrative and Critical History of America (1889)
"Established some very curious coincidences between the Beni-Israel, and some of the American tribes." -The Congregational Magazine, 1828

Are the Lost Ten Tribes of Israel to be found in Native American tribes of North and South America?

In 1828, Unitarian minister Israel Worsley sought to answer this question in the affirmative by publishing the book:

"A View of the American Indians...Shewing Them to be the Descendants of the Ten Tribes of Israel."

The purpose of Worsley's 1828 book was to give a concise but conspicuous view of the Lost Ten Tribes of Israel, extracting from the works of Ethan Smith, Elias Boudinot, and other sources including incidental remarks of historians, Josephus, Prideaux, Gibbon, Robertson and others, such materials as bear directly upon the point in question.

Among the proofs cited by Worsley in support of Native Americans being descendants of the lost tribes of Israel are the following:

? The American Indians live in tribes;
? They have a tradition prevailing universally, that they came into that country at the Northwest corner;
? They acknowledge One God, the Great Spirit, who created all things seen and unseenーthe name by which this being is known to them is ale, the old Hebrew name of God; he is also called yehovah, sometimes yah, and also abba;
? They are distinctly heard to sing with their religious dances, halleluyah or praise to yah;
? They keep annual feasts which resemble those of the Mosaic ritual;
? There is a sort of jubilee kept by some of them;
? They have cities of refuge;
? In their temples is a holy place into which none may enter but the priest;
? The priests garb is a humble imitation of the High Priest's robes, with a breast plate and other ornaments;
? They have a succession of priests, who are inducted into office by purification and anointing;
? They had once a holy book, which while they kept, things went well with them; they lost it, and in consequence of the loss fell under the displeasure of the Great Spirit; but they believe they shall one day regain it;
? They are looking for and expecting someone to come and teach them the right way.

In his concluding chapter, Worsley notes that "in the book of Esdras their journey can be traced into a land where no man dwelt. And although throughout the space of 2,500 years they have not been inquired after, they are not less in being on this account. In that direction which the prophetic historian points out, a way of a year and a half's journey, is a passage to a wide land, wherein they might wander undisturbed from sea to sea. In that land an immense population has been discovered, in their usages and customs unlike any of the tribes and nations existing in Europe or Asia, with peculiar and striking features, which render them remarkable."

About the author:

Israel Worsley (1768ー1836) was an English Unitarian minister. Other works authored by Worsley included:

? Account of the State of France . . . and the Treatment of the English, 1806.
? Memoir of Jacob Brettell, Lincoln, 1810.
? Observations on ... Changes in the Presbyterian Societies of England 1816.
? Lectures on ... RUSSIA IN 1916 BY STEPHEN GRAHAM【電子書籍】[ STEPHEN GRAHAM ]

tephen Graham (1884 - 15 March 1975) was a British journalist, travel-writer, essayist and novelist. His best-known books recount his travels around pre-revolutionary Russia and his journey to Jerusalem with a group of Russian Christian pilgrims. Most of his works express his sympathy for the poor, for agricultural labourers and for tramps, and his distaste for industrialisation.
I Returned to Russia last summer, visited as many of my old friends there as I could, arranged for the publication of some of my books in the Russian language, and incidentally travelled a great deal and saw a great many sides of Russian contemporary life, talked also with all manner of Russians. I travelled to Bergen in Norway, from Bergen obtained a passage round the North Cape to Vard?, the last port of Norway, transhipped there to a Russian boat and sailed for Ekaterina, the first port in Russia in the North, the new Russian harbour which never freezes. From Ekaterina I went on to Archangel, where I stayed a week, and from Archangel went to Moscow. I visited some estates in Central Russia and stayed with various acquaintances and friends, visited Rostof-on-the-Don, the Caucasus, Orel, Petrograd, and finally came back to England on a returning ammunition ship. In going to Russia I certainly did not intend to publish my impressions in book form, but I have been asked to do so, and I recognise the value of keeping in contact with our Ally from day to day. The requirement of the moment seems to be not so much books on Russia, of which there are now a great many, but diaries or volumes of impressions, keeping the peoples of the two countries in touch during the war. I returned to London at the beginning of October, 1916, and I should be glad to think that some one returning at the beginning of January, 1917, would follow on with another small volume of this type. Again for April, 1917. We need such volumes of personal impressions, and there would not be the need to apologise for them. They are letters between friends both engaged in the same vital task. It is extremely difficult to keep in touch with Russia by reading newspapers only. The newspapers are, on the whole, difficult to follow. They are concerned with the news-aspect of events and the scope for sensational appeals. Good quiet correspondence tends to be lost in them. Hence my little book of the hour. I was in Russia when the war broke out in 1914. I spent 1915 in Egypt, the Balkans, Russia and England, and again I spent the summer of 1916 in Russia. I have, therefore, been in touch with the Russians all the time of the war. I hope, therefore, that in this time when deeds rather than words are necessary, my report of the conditions prevailing in the land of our ally Russia may be considered serviceable Stephen Graham.

We are creatures of time. It affects every moment of our lives. Yet when we study the Bible, our focus tends to be on principles and personalities rather than on how the events of redemptive history were perfectly timed by God. Since my own study of the Bible's timeline opened my eyes to some of God's biggest truths, my goal is to introduce as many people as possible to the rich experience of studying Scripture with a focus on God's timing.

Second Peter 3:8 states, "But, beloved, do not forget this one thing, that with the Lord one day is as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day" (NKJV). How accurate a statement it is isn't the question at the moment. What's important is this passage suggests that a day of time is much different for God than it is for us. The Creator's day is not equal to the creature's day. It is hard for me to comprehend how a day is like a thousand years and a thousand years are like a day, but that is how it appears to God.

The Almighty stands outside of time. He created time and operates within it when He chooses. God can move in and out of time as He desires. Wayne Grudem rightfully states, "It is evident throughout Scripture that God acts within time and acts differently at different points in time." (1)

The Bible records what God has done in the past and what He plans to do in the future to bring us to salvation. If we study Scripture well, we will discover a number of important things about how God operates. From the very beginning of human history, man has needed a Savior (see Genesis 3:15). Jesus Christ came the first time nearly 2,000 years ago, and we are waiting for Him to return to finish what He started.

The worldwide church needs to be awake when Jesus Christ returns. Believers dare not be like the disciples who fell asleep in the garden of Gethsemane, failing to pray and keep watch with Jesus (Matthew 26:36-46). If we are spiritually asleep when Jesus returns, we will miss one of the greatest moments in the history of the world. We must keep our lamps trimmed and burning.

It's crucial for us to pay attention to the Bible's timeline. The purpose of this book is to give you (the reader) important keys to help you better understand God's plan and His character, through studying the time frame of Scripture. It begins by putting a date on I Kings 6:1 and then methodically walking through the Word of God. The book of Revelation instructs us that an end to the time of grace and salvation will come, and that time is approaching quickly. We must use the precious time we have to reach the lost-those who have yet to receive Jesus Christ, the Son of God, as their personal Savior. He is the true Savior of the world.

Through my countless hours of study into God's timing I have become a different person. I fully know and trust that God will act when He is ready according to His timetable. He has taught me to be patient and endure difficult circumstances with a sense of hope and expectancy. I hope this book will do the same for you. May God open your eyes to the wonders of His perfect timing as you read on.

Sailors' Yarns & Tavern Tales: Vanishings, Ghosts and Spooky Ships【電子書籍】[ Vicki Rutherford ]

Ships found drifting with no crew aboard. Lighthouse keepers haunted by the Grey Lady, searching for her lost babe. A wooden ship trapped in Arctic ice for 13 years traveling the Northwest Passage with a frozen crew. The ghosts of drowned sailors photographed swimming alongside a ship.

These are some of the stories told in Sailors' Yarns & Tavern Tales. For most of the long history of humans at sea, thousands of primitive and not so primitive vessels must have gone missing, succumbing to the perils of the sea. We have no knowledge of those events as, for the most part, history was an oral tradition. Seafarers of those times doubtlessly talked of missing ships and other happenings at sea. And, being humans, seafarers embellished those stories as they were told and retold in port taverns.

Today, we build all manner of ships, equipped with modern navigation and communication aids. Yet, ships still run aground and are buffeted by hurricanes and other forces of nature. Yes, some have disappeared, too. Between 1984 and 2004, 200 large cargo ships, over 656 feet (200 meters) in length, were lost for various reasons, often unknown. Science is beginning to discover the natural forces behind some of these mysteries.

The mystery yarns of the sea in this book are from the past four centuries and from many sources. Some are fact, others based on fact but embroidered in the telling, and still others may only be figments of storytellers' imaginations. Whatever their authenticity, sailors' yarns are entertaining. Such tales also give those who live on land a glimpse into the world of those who follow the sea as a career. In a world of satellites and GPS, the oceans are still mysterious with secrets yet to be unraveled.

This entertaining book tells twenty strange stories of mysterious disappearances and weird happenings at sea. It also presents some of the natural causes behind such stories, which today's scientists and investigators are discovering.

Lead Like a Shepherd The Secret to Leading Well【電子書籍】[ Larry Osborne ]

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】Lead Like a Shepherd The Secret to Leading Well【電子書籍】[ Larry Osborne ]

Pastor, author, and leadership consultant unpacks instruction for church leaders found in 1 Peter 5:1-4 where they are exhorted to shepherd the flock among them.

Some instruction is timeless. Regardless of the age in which we live, certain instruction carries no expiration on its relevance. Pastor, author, and leadership consultant, Larry Osborne has discovered this to be the case with instruction on how to be a good leader. The best, most practical advice comes from the Bible, and in particular, 1 Peter 5:1-4. It's in this short passage where leaders are exhorted to shepherd the flock among them.

Unfortunately, most modern leaders have precious little experience tending sheep, and many of the implications that were well understood when Peter penned these words are lost on today's reader. Osborne finds the parallels to be numerous, well-worth reviewing and understanding anew.

A shepherd leads them to water even when they fear it. A shepherd never allows one sick lamb to destroy the flock. A shepherd lays down his life for his sheep . . .

When leaders truly understand Peter's words of exhortation to lead like a shepherd, then they will begin to see the path that leads them to Leading Well.

The Memory Stays (And in Such Detail)【電子書籍】[ Alexander Pullar ]

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】The Memory Stays (And in Such Detail)【電子書籍】[ Alexander Pullar ]

With the passing of time, family history can become a vague distant memory, disconnected to present-day affairs. If passed by word of mouth through the generations, family matters will ultimately erode and disappear, or at best, become blurred in favour of the current bias teller. Hence, the true past will fade into obscurity and be lost forever. This book is an attempt to preserve the authentic history of two Dundee families through the nineteenth and twentieth centuries; the “Pullar’s of the Hilltown” and the McElroy’s of Dallfield Walk. Hence, preventing their loss to the abrasive passage of time. However, this is not simply a glimpse into their everyday lives. It is set against a profile of local, national, and international affairs, and, in so doing attempts to clarify the significant effects of such events on the lives of simple working people. Not only is it a biography of both my parents and their respective families, but it reflects the consequences of such events that many similar poverty ridden families had to endure, during a period of Britain’s supreme industrial might and prosperity. Therefore, it echoes a bygone age in the history of this ancient city, which tells of a time when life was hard and often short. But it also tells of an age when people had time for each other, time to stop, time to speak, and time to listen.

Adrift in the Arctic Ice Pack【電子書籍】[ Elisha Kent Kane ]

This is a history of an expedition to the Arctic in search of a lost team that was written by one of the crewmen on the subsequent searches. From the intro:

“IT was in the summer of 1845 that Sir John Franklin undertook his fourth voyage into the Arctic regions, in search of a northwest passage, and disappeared forever in that icy waste.

Franklin’s two ships, the Erebus and the Terror, were supposed to be provisioned for three years. When this interval had passed without word of the daring navigator there was grave fear that he had met with disaster. Then began an unparalleled series of search and relief expeditions, public and private, English and American: five separate ones in 1848, three in 1849, ten in 1850, two in 1851, nine in 1852, five in 1853, two in 1854, one in 1855, and one in 1857.

Among the earliest of these was one from the United States, known as the first Grinnell expedition, which left New York in May, 1848. Lady Franklin had appealed to the President of the United States to ≪ 8 ≫enlist his countrymen as a “kindred people, to join heart and hand in the enterprise of snatching the lost navigators from a dreary grave.” Accordingly a bill was introduced in Congress to fit out an expedition for this purpose; but the process of legislation was too slow to provide vessels and equipment in the short time that was left for such a venture.”

The last of its survivors lived well into the twentieth century. They were the last witnesses to the final act of a terrible and significant period in world history.In this epic work, Dr. Hannah Durkin tells the stories of the Clotilda's 110 captives, drawing on her intensive archival, historical, and sociological research. The Survivors of the Clotilda follows their lives from their kidnappings in what is modern-day Nigeria through a terrifying 45-day journey across the Middle Passage; from the subsequent sale of the ship's 103 surviving children and young people into slavery across Alabama to the dawn of the Civil Rights movement in Selma; from the foundation of an all-Black African Town (later Africatown) in Northern Mobile--an inspiration for writers of the Harlem Renaissance, including Zora Neale Hurston--to the foundation of the quilting community of Gee's Bend--a Black artistic circle whose cultural influence remains enormous.An astonishing, deeply compelling tapestry of history, biography, and social commentary, The Survivors of the Clotilda is a tour de force that deepens our knowledge and understanding of the Black experience and of America and its tragic past.

"Maps Lost" explores the fascinating history of cartographic errors and their profound impact on world history.
It reveals how flawed maps have shaped exploration, fueled territorial disputes, and redefined our understanding of the world.
The book highlights that maps are not objective truths but interpretations influenced by political agendas and the limitations of geographic knowledge at the time.
For example, the persistent appearance of mythical islands on early maps of the Atlantic spurred many voyages of (fruitless) exploration.

The book adopts a critical cartographic approach, challenging the notion of maps as purely objective tools.
It emphasizes that maps are subjective constructions that reflect their creators' biases and historical contexts.
"Maps Lost" progresses through a series of compelling case studies, examining specific maps and their unintended consequences.
These include instances where miscalculations led to the search for the Northwest Passage and politicized mappings of contested territories.

Ultimately, "Maps Lost" argues that cartographic errors, while often viewed as failures, have paradoxically driven exploration, discovery, and the expansion of geographic knowledge.
It equips readers with the tools for cartographic literacy, encouraging them to critically analyze maps and understand their role in shaping our perception of the world.

A Journey of Repentance, Renewal, and Return【電子書籍】[ R.E. Hasselbach ]

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】A Journey of Repentance, Renewal, and Return【電子書籍】[ R.E. Hasselbach ]

In this nonfiction debut, Hasselbach takes readers through the liturgical celebration of Lent, which stretches from Ash Wednesday to Easter Sunday. The period is typically seen by Christian celebrants as a time of reflection and personal denial-"What are you giving up for Lent?" is the typical question. The author takes a broad and scripturally informed view of the subject, issuing a call to action to Christian readers: "First, we must do a fiercely honest examination of our lives-before we repent, we must know we are sinners." The book breaks down Lent by day, with each section providing plenty of space for readers to write their own reflections. This is a work that can be used extensively by readers, shaped to their own personal interpretations of the season. The volume's strongest feature by far is Hasselbach's own insights into not only Lent specifically, but also the Christian faith more generally. "If Jesus's resurrection was for him alone, it would be amazing but not significant for us all these years later," one passage goes. "It would have changed him, but not us." "When Jesus tells us to become like little children, he is instructing us to acknowledge that we are one with the poor, the suffering, the broken, and the lost," reads another. "That means we must accept those whom others reject." These and other observations about the nature of Christianity crop up throughout the book and are uniformly intriguing. Even readers who have little interest in performing an active Lent will still find the bulk of this work invigoratingly thought-provoking. And the volume's usefulness during Lent itself is self-evident.

The storms of life threaten all of us at one time or another, leaving us feeling lost, alone and without any hope. We all face adversities in the name of relationships, physical and mental health, the pain of loss, work stress, finances and persecution. Our relationship with Jesus Christ does not always exclude us from all the unpleasant circumstances life sometimes throws our way. But the Bible makes it clear that when we turn our lives over to God and pursue Him wholeheartedly, He will never leave us nor forsake us (Deuteronomy 31:6), no matter what our temporary situation looks like in the natural. The truth is, we are never alone, and there is a Friend who sticks closer than a brother (Proverbs 18:24), granting to us out of His great mercy an inexhaustible supply of power and love to weather any life-storm we face. Through it all, He ensures we are more than conquerors. (Romans 8:37)

This is the second of two volumes in a year-long daily devotional that highlights nearly a hundred of the most comforting and powerful verses on how God is our Shelter from the storm.
A collection of fascinating folklore and maritime trivia about pirates, explorers, naval battles, shipwrecks, sea monsters, and more.

Stirring tales of heroism at sea have been ingrained in the annals of maritime history from time immemorial. Christopher Columbus’s discovery of the New World, Queen Elizabeth I’s defeat of the Spanish Armada, and Horatio Nelson’s victory at Trafalgar are just some of Britain’s most memorable naval triumphs. But what about the lesser-known tales from its seafaring past?

The Victorian who invented a swimming machine in order to cross the English Channel; the capture of a real-life mermaid; the lost pirate treasure of Alborn; the ghost of a murdered sailor who still haunts the streets of Portsmouth; and the daring explorers who vanished into the blue yonder, leaving behind nothing but a cryptic message in a champagne bottleーthese are just some of the quirky naval stories that have been chronicled in verse and archived in newspaper clippings, and forgotten with the passage of time. Historian and genealogist Caroline Rochford has compiled 200 traditional songs and stories into this book, which offers an exciting, entertaining and eye-opening glimpse into a long-lost maritime past.
