What was mysterious back then now it all makes sense. To me it seems as though these events and circumstances where orchestrated to rear me toward success. I mean both the bad times as well as the good ones. They have made me the person that I am; they have taught me perseverance and patience as well as the importance of having the end in view all the way.＜/p＞ ＜p＞I must admit though that this did not happen overnight, I did no sleep and woke up the next morning a person who understands all and who has learnt to deal with anything. It has been a journey but even a journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step. Success is not a destination but the journey itself and every step of the way we can be successful.＜/p＞ ＜p＞I know that many young people are in very severe situations. I would not like to sound insensitive to what others are feeling. I know I have been there, but hear me when I say; sometimes it is not the circumstances that are a problem more than our attitudes towards them and our perceptions of them. When forbidding circumstances are met with foreboding attitudes, it’s a deadly combination. Seems to me we are sometimes happy when we can have something to grab and show as a reason why we did not succeed. Circumstances will always be what we choose to make out of them, stumbling blocks or stepping stones. It’s your choice.＜/p＞ ＜p＞ I have discovered that in order for one to write out his own ending of the story dreaming must be part of his reality. Do you dream is the question, or even better do you dare to dream? In a society that ridicules and tries to nullify people’s visions, do you dare? This kind of dreaming I am talking about is not hallucinating or castle building, but it is a strong desire that translates itself into a vision, a bigger picture of yourself that you will grow into. That’s what I mean by dreaming, seeing possibilities where others only see impossibilities, opportunities where it seems there in nothing but obscurities.＜/p＞ ＜p＞ How can we talk about success without talking about fear, yes fear the enemy of progress? We all have fears and they vary from person to person. Shakespeare once wrote that “Cowards die many times before death...” Dying before death happens even to the best of us. It only takes place when we let our fear dictate what is possible and not. But the courage to act against fear and success is what separates the victors of this world from the conquered.＜/p＞ ＜p＞What about the importance of knowing who we are and why we are. In fact there are two important dates in a man’s life, one the day we are born and two the day we find out why we were born. Knowing you strengths and weaknesses, capabilities and abilities will make sure you end up doing what you are best suited for. Many have chosen wrong careers and ended up leaving stressed and unfulfilling lives even though they seem to have it all. Know yourself, know what needs to be polished, eradicated or modified. We are all becoming, we have not reached the full stature of human development yet, what is important is that we are growing and developing.＜/p＞ ＜p＞ In all of this we are not alone; we have witnesses along the path to success. Some are cheering us along, while some are sneering at us. These are the powerful outside forces that challenge the very core of our identity and mission as individuals. “No man is an island”, we experience this more often than not. I want us to realize the powerful pressure of all, the “peer pressure” and know how to deal with it. We are to reclaim our lives form the mercy of other, so that we don’t have to blame anyone for what we turn out to be in life.＜/p＞ ＜p＞ I don’t want to sound as though I am in a land of oblivion. Let me also tell you that sometimes or even most times you’ll fall and hit the ground so hard, some call this failure. It is okay, it’s a normal process for those that are moving forward, no one falls when they are all along sleeping or siting. I have failed before not once or twice, not in small things only but, I have learnt that even in failure there is a good lesson to take home. Just get up when you fall, if you fall again, please get up again. ＜/p＞ ＜p＞ Finally when you have learned to implement all these principles you’ll notice that there is one ingredient that is missing. The question is how would you leave a life that is not only meaningful to yourself only but to others as well? The answer is, “give to others”, I can already hear a young person asking, give what? The answer may seem very sarcastic but it’s a working one. “Give to other’s whatever you have. May I suggest one thing that I know you have? Time, yes time is what we can all give to others and they can take that and convert to any service that they need, from which they can be benefited. Once you learn this, it comes with peace and satisfaction. For it is said, “denying others their humanity is denying your own”.＜/p＞ ＜p＞ I know our fellow young people are in need of council, and not so much from the adults, as much as from their peer, someone who understands their time and language. My message is from the heart; in fact these are things I wish someone could have sat me down and told me at the beginning of my journey. It would have surely saved me many a heart ache. ＜p＞Written in 1883, 'The Gospel in brief' is Tolstoy's harmonization of the four Christian gospels into one. So now we have Matthew, Mark, Luke, John - and Tolstoy. It is, he says, 'an examination of Christian teaching not according to the church's interpretations, but solely according to what has come down to us of Christ's teaching, as ascribed to him in the gospels.'That which Tolstoy retains from the originals, and that which he leaves out, tells us much about what he regards as essential Christianity. So here we find Tolstoy not concerned with events, but with the teaching; for it is the teaching that gives meaning to life. In his version, there is no place for the famous birth story; the healing miracles or Christ's resurrection. In Tolstoy's view, these were put there to persuade people of Christ's divinity, and are therefore superfluous. We should not be focusing on Christ the Son of God, but on Christ the teacher; and to this end, Tolstoy always refers to Jesus' disciples as 'pupils'. He also never misses a chance to place the Orthodox Church firmly with Christ's opponents. He calls the Scribes 'Orthodox professors' and refers to the teachers of the law, simply as 'Orthodox.' We also find expressed clearly here the 5 commands that Tolstoy regarded as the essence of the gospel:1 Do not be angry, but live at peace with all men.2 Do not indulge yourself in sexual gratification.3 Do not promise anything on oath to anyone.4 Do not resist evil, do not judge and do not go to law.5 Make no distinction of nationality, but love foreigners as your own people. Will the church like this version? Tolstoy doubts it, and expects a response: 'If they will not disavow their lies, only one thing remains for them: to persecute me - for which I, completing what I have written, prepare myself with joy and with fear of my own weakness.' For as long as I can remember I have heard friends and family say to me: 'David, you are so hard on yourself!' It wasn't until I began my own psychotherapeutic work that I was able to see the truth in these claims and to concern myself with how to dampen the Critic's voice. Of great surprise and interest to me was the discovery that at the root of healing Inner Critic wounding is critical compassion: the instrument of self-compassion. Taking a historical view of psychology it is possible to argue that the root of the concept of the Inner Critic lies in the work of Jung and is related, although not the same as Jung's concept of the Shadow. Young-Eisendrath and Dawson (2008, p.98) write of ... that unwelcome side of our nature that Jung calls the shadow. This is made up of all the tendencies, motives and characteristics that we have barred from consciousness, whether deliberately or not. The lights inside are not burning so you buzz the button for the security guard. About ten minutes later the guard finally opens the door and says, “What are you doing here today? You know that we are closed on Saturdays.” Well, that explains why the alarm was not set and why the gas tank on the car that you were going to fill Saturday morning were not as they should be. So, feeling really foolish and ashamed that you were so rushed that you didn’t figure out things for yourself, you decide to make the best of what was left of a really bad start of a weekend. “I am going to stop at McDonalds and get myself a large coffee and a McDonald’s deluxe breakfast, and maybe a sticky bun too,” you said to yourself. So speeding down the freeway you come to an exit with a big McDonald’s sign and turn off the interstate and enter the entrance to McDonalds. Running up to the counter, cash in hand ready to order, you look for a server. Finally a rather large and grandmother aged woman came to the counter, took one look at your disheveled appearance and said, “You don’t deserve a break today,” and walked away. You think that it can’t get any worse than that, just wait until you read the story of Thomas, the crippled beggar who daily lay outside the Gate Beautiful at the temple in Jerusalem begging. What God was showing me was that I am indeed fallible apart from the Holy Spirit’s guidance. It amazes me how we can have opinions and solutions to problems when we are on the outside looking in. But experiences in life and finding yourself in the “inside” your viewpoint will change. I know mine did on several fronts. Our view point does many times reflect a horizontal way of thinking (a worldly viewpoint taken from our peers and relying on our natural sense) instead of a vertical viewpoint stemmed from a line of communication with God, I want to challenge you to read each chapter with an open heart and mind. See if the hurricane I went through compares to the one you are going through. The package might be wrapped differently or the box might be a different size, but the contents are all the same. ＜p＞In the space of the thirty-some years I have called myself a storyteller, the balance of what I tell has shifted from children’s stories and traditional folk and fairy tales told in schools, churches, and community centers to stories drawn directly from my own experiences. But I also understand that by adapting and re-imagining traditional folk and fairy tale material, you can provide a point of entry for contemporary listeners to experience, as psychologist Bruno Bettelheim has suggested in his book ＜em＞The Uses of Enchantment＜/em＞, the continuing power of the old stories to speak to the imagination and heart.＜/p＞ ＜p＞Wanting to make a connection between the older stories and our existential circumstance, I sought to re-interpret folk and fairy tales by placing them in a more contemporary context. The confusing Black Forest of the Brothers Grimm became the crowded shopping mall. Rapunzel’s mother sought a more familiar drug than the painkilling herbs of the witch’s garden. I also created stories that were in the style of the older folk and fairy tales. One featured a lowly cucumber plant that, after consuming radioactive water and junk-food compost, became the glowing, green Godzilla of pickles. Another featured a boy named Jack, who found fame and fortune racing inner-city cockroaches.＜/p＞ ＜p＞In creating and performing original stories and reimagined folk tales, as well as teaching stories to students of all ages, it has become clear to me that ＜em＞how＜/em＞ we tell the story, as much as ＜em＞why＜/em＞, is at the very heart of the art. By “how,” I do not mean how we use voice and gesture, etc., but how we organize stories to get across their meanings to an audience.＜/p＞ ＜p＞There are two central facts at the heart of the oral story. The first is that it begins when the teller begins and ends when the teller ends it, though I could argue that it actually ends when the audience dismisses it. This is fundamentally different from the written story, where a reader can go back and read the same words again. With the spoken word, we are ＜em＞in the moment＜/em＞. Even if we could ask the teller to go back and say something again, the very act of asking would alter the way in which the information is conveyed to us. This leads directly to the second basic fact: the act of telling is an expression of the relationship of the teller to the audience. We always tell to someone, even if it is to ourselves. It is incumbent upon us to recognize that the choice we make about how we tell a story to a given audience is as much about our understanding of who that audience is as it is about what we are saying to the audience.＜/p＞ ＜p＞It is this crucial understanding of how the narrative is shaped and the choices we make as tellers to share a particular version of a story with a particular audience that I wish to explore with you. Whether we are working with a live audience in performance or with an imagined one while typing away on our laptops, the creation of compelling fiction and non-fiction begins with how to frame the story.＜/p＞ ＜p＞This book is for storytellers and would-be storytellers, whether you call yourself a writer, minister, politician, journalist, lawyer, teacher, therapist, or street-corner b.s.’er. Whatever the name, the benefit you derive from the application of this material to your creative process will come from understanding how narrative is shaped and making conscious decisions about shaping that narrative content. This book was developed in workshops and classes I’ve conducted with storytellers and writers since 1986. Even though you are born again you enslave yourself anew by trying to be perfect and trying to qualify for the promises. Law is what you do in self-effort, while grace is what Jesus has done for you. Therefore, the law demands and grace imparts. What you need is the impartation of His grace into your heart. Whatever you need in this life, whether it is strength, love, provision, wisdom, or healing, it is imparted from Christ into your heart - this is grace. The law demands righteousness by self-effort, if we fail we are condemned. It hardens the heart and stops the flow of grace. I began to see myself differently as if I were a different person. I actually felt free from the grasp of society, truly liberated, and I launched myself into a new and different lifestyle. My move to Tennessee in 2018 after I retired proved to be a good decision, giving me the opportunity for a new start; not to mention the climate seemed to suit me much better.＜/p＞ ＜p＞Although physically my inner self longed for more; I let my hair and beard grow and I started dressing more comfortable and leisurely.＜/p＞ ＜p＞Eventually I started with the tattoos and piercings, becoming addicted to the pain and desiring more and more. The artist who has done all my tattoo work became a dear friend and beginning with her I learned new spiritual things; not in the way of religion but more in the way of 'personal ＜em＞enlightenment＜/em＞'.＜/p＞ ＜p＞I began a search to find out more about myself; my inner self. I started by joining one of the ancestral websites. I searched relentlessly for two years, devoting many hours to uncovering my past and my ancestors. It was quite interesting and rewarding in most cases as I traced my lineage through the pages of time.＜/p＞ ＜p＞Once I finished my genealogy research I turned my attention to another area of great interest; ＜em＞＜strong＞the truth＜/strong＞＜/em＞. I had too many questions that had never been answered completely. I had taken issue with the Bible and questioned much of its content and interpretation.＜/p＞ ＜p＞So where did we really come from? How many ancient civilizations lived on earth before us? What really awaits us after death? What part do extraterrestrials have to do with earth and mankind?＜/p＞ ＜p＞I completed and published my first book in August 2023 entitled "Awakenings". I am not ashamed of my opinions. After forty years of Bible-reading and praying, meditation and theological study, I find myself clinging more tightly than ever to “Evangelical” religion, and more than ever satisfied with it. It wears well: it stands the fire. I know no system of religion which is better. In the faith of it I have lived for the third of a century, and in the faith of it I hope to die.＜/p＞ ＜p＞The plain truth is, that I see no other ground to occupy, and find no other rest for the sole of my foot.
