U.S. Navy Abbreviations of World War II and U.S. Navy Code Words of World War II: Terms Found in Pearl Harbor Documents【電子書籍】[ Progressive Management ]

Navy Abbreviations of World War II and U.S. Navy Code Words of World War II: Terms Found in Pearl Harbor Documents【電子書籍】[ Progressive Management ]

A companion to our Pearl Harbor Encyclopedia, this unique document provides definitions for thousands of Navy abbreviations and code words used during the period of Pearl Harbor and later during World War II.

The roads around Pearl Harbor were alive in wartime with vehicles marked "AdComPhibsPac." The waters of Casco Bay were plowed by small boats bearing at their bows the mystic inscriptions, "DesLant" or "SOPA." In a single dim corridor of the Navy Department, "OIR" and "OR&I" indicated adjacent but quite distinct offices of "EXOS."

Altogether the Navy produced, officially or unofficially, thousands of such abbreviations during the war. A few, such as "SecNav," "CominCh," "CNO," "BuPers," and "J.g.," were well-known throughout the service. most of the rest, however, were thrown around in familiar fashion by those immediately concerned, but might be thoroughly mystifying to the rest of the Naval Establishment. it would be difficult to find a person who could even approach a perfect score in identifying "CAFAC," "JOSCO," and "OMPUS," to say nothing of "COLanForASCU," "LanCraBNAW," "NOBDUCHAR," and "PaCorNaLong," even while the war was in progress; as it grows more distant, those symbols will become even less familiar.

For the benefit of naval personnel, officials, and scholars who may have occasion to consult correspondence, reports and historical narratives in which such abbreviations occur, it has seemed desirable to prepare a glossary identifying the principal terms likely to be encountered in such documents. The need for such a glossary was indicated by the preparation of various partial lists during the war; none of these, however, covered more than a fraction of the whole. The glossary includes most of the principal Navy, marine Corps and Coast Guard abbreviations in use from 1940 to the end of 1946. Four particular categories have been given in great detail: vessel types, naval aircraft types, commissioned and enlisted personnel designations, and Fleet Post Office numbers. The vessel types, while numerous, are clear cut. For aircraft, the nickname as well as the official designation is given, and the general meaning of the initials indicating function and manufacturer. The personnel designations were changed several times during the period, particularly for reserve officers; these are all included, with cross-referencing to avoid needless repetition. For purposes of security, the names of overseas stations and units were frequently omitted not only from envelope addresses but also from the contents; without the assistance of the list reproduced under "Navy Numbers," it would be difficult to identify the source of letters which simply had the printed headings "Naval District Headquarters, Navy No. 121, FPO New York" or "Naval Operating Base, Navy No. 1504, FPO San Francisco." The general abbreviations fall into two major types. "Commander Philippine Sea Frontier," for instance, was sometimes contracted to "ComPhilSeaFron" and at other times to "CPSF." The former type was whimsically compared by one columnist to the practice of the Russians with their "Politburo" or "Amtogr." Such contractions are much easier to deduce than the more numerous combinations of initials which follow the British practice. Some abbreviations received an official blessing and were incorporated in aviation, communications, personnel or technical lists or manuals; others were often improvised and might vary with the individual taste of the abbreviator. "Service Squadron," for instance, appeared variously as "Seron," "Serron," "Serbon" and "Servron." Those four all appear in this glossary, but naturally it has been out of the question to include all variations.

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】Money and God-Luck Spells and Charms Magick for Beginners, #4【電子書籍】[ Maya Angelika ]

Magick for Beginners: Money and God-Luck Spells and Charms is a witchcraft manual on attracting money and the luck of God into your life. Indeed, the practice of magic is pure spirituality. But, what is spirituality? Spirituality is life. If you come to think about it, the energy of the material world is money. Needless to say, energy is important, regardless whether you are a magical practitioner or not. Many practitioners, however, only focus on the spiritual dimension thinking that money is not important. But, it is well to note that we are living in the material world. Even as a magician, witch, or sorcerer, you still possess a physical body; and, in the physical world, money is very important. Hence, if you want to be whole at all levels and realms, then there is nothing wrong with attracting wealth and welcoming god-luck into your life.

Indeed, luck is also important in this world. Just think about the people who are born rich and beautiful. They have less worries in life, and therefore they could focus more on the spiritual aspect of the Craft of the Wise. It should be noted that they did not achieve such a high and noble state because of their own efforts, but a good part of it was mainly due to having good luck. If you want to have the kind of luck that transcends the realms and the magical dimensions, then it is not only good luck that you need, but the luck of god, which is an active force that influences and directs the energy of the universe.

Magick for Beginners: Money and God-Luck Spells and Charms is a key that can open a door of wondrous magic for you. There is nothing wrong with casting and using magic for wealth and riches. The only thing that makes this kind of magic either good or bad is how you approach and use it. As early as now, you must realize that you ought not to use this wealth to boost your self-ego. Rather, you shall have money and the wealth that you desire, so that you can have more time to focus on what is more important: the evolution of the soul through the practice of magic.

Magick for Beginners: Money and God-Luck Spells and Charms is not all theories and words. Rather, it will give you the right understanding, as well as practices and techniques, so that you can learn and apply all the magical knowledge as revealed herein. Just always remember to use this power only for good and the advancement of the soul, for true magic is pure spirituality.

Its reputation for obscurity and needless legalese is widespread. For more than twenty years, Bryan A. Garner's Legal Writing in Plain English has helped address this problem by providing lawyers, judges, paralegals, law students, and legal scholars with sound advice and practical tools for improving their written work.
The leading guide to clear writing in the field, this indispensable volume encourages legal writers to challenge conventions and offers valuable insights into the writing process that will appeal to other professionals: how to organize ideas, create and refine prose, and improve editing skills.
Accessible and witty, Legal Writing in Plain English draws on real-life writing samples that Garner has gathered through decades of teaching. Trenchant advice covers all types of legal materials, from analytical and persuasive writing to legal drafting, and the book's principles are reinforced by sets of basic, intermediate, and advanced exercises in each section.
In this new edition, Garner preserves the successful structure of the original while adjusting the content to make it even more classroom-friendly. The Ethics of Voting【電子書籍】[ Jason Brennan ]

Nothing is more integral to democracy than voting. Most people believe that every citizen has the civic duty or moral obligation to vote, that any sincere vote is morally acceptable, and that buying, selling, or trading votes is inherently wrong. In this provocative book, Jason Brennan challenges our fundamental assumptions about voting, revealing why it is not a duty for most citizens--in fact, he argues, many people owe it to the rest of us not to vote.
Bad choices at the polls can result in unjust laws, needless wars, and calamitous economic policies. Brennan shows why voters have duties to make informed decisions in the voting booth, to base their decisions on sound evidence for what will create the best possible policies, and to promote the common good rather than their own self-interest. They must vote well--or not vote at all. Brennan explains why voting is not necessarily the best way for citizens to exercise their civic duty, and why some citizens need to stay away from the polls to protect the democratic process from their uninformed, irrational, or immoral votes.
In a democracy, every citizen has the right to vote. This book reveals why sometimes it's best if they don't. In a new afterword, "How to Vote Well," Brennan provides a practical guidebook for making well-informed, well-reasoned choices at the polls.

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】Starting Monday Seven Keys to a Permanent, Positive Relationship with Food【電子書籍】[ Karen R. Koenig ]

Starting Monday is based on the simple premise that when our behaviors don’t align with our expressed intentions, we’ve got a conflict going on, often outside of our awareness. The book helps readers dig deeply into their psyches to figure out what mistaken beliefs and needless fears are holding them back from achieving their health and fitness goals. The polarized feelings for disregulated eaters to identify and resolve fall within these 7 key areas: 1) create lasting change, 2) making conscious choices, 3) feel deserving, 4) how to comfort themselves, 5) know what's enough, 6) manage intimacy, and 7) developing a healthy identity.
Starting Monday first helps readers unearth their mixed feelings in these seven areas, then teaches them how to change their beliefs and behaviors to resolve them. Using humor, plain talk, examples from her clinical experience, reflection exercises, case studies, and homework, Koenig lets troubled eaters know that their yo-yo patterns of eating and self care are due to conflicts. She shies away from easy answers and, instead, provides hope and concrete actions to developing a permanent, positive relationship with food.

The Civil War in 1862 The Battles that Saved Both the North and South【

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】The Civil War in 1862 The Battles that Saved Both the North and South【電子書籍】

After Union General Ulysses S. Grant captured Fort Henry and Fort Donelson in early 1862, Confederate General Albert Sidney Johnston, widely considered the Confederacy’s best general, concentrated his forces in northern Georgia and prepared for a major offensive that culminated with the biggest battle of the war to that point, the Battle of Shiloh. On the morning of April 6, Johnston directed an all out attack on Grant’s army around Shiloh Church, and though Grant’s men had been encamped there, they had failed to create defensive fortifications or earthworks. They were also badly caught by surprise. With nearly 45,000 Confederates attacking, Johnston’s army began to steadily push Grant’s men back toward the river.

As fate would have it, the Confederates may have been undone by friendly fire at Shiloh. Johnston advanced out ahead of his men on horseback while directing a charge near a peach orchard when he was hit in the lower leg by a bullet that historians now widely believe was fired by his own men. Nobody thought the wound was serious, including Johnston, who continued to aggressively lead his men and even sent his personal physician to treat wounded Union soldiers taken captive. But the bullet had clipped an artery, and shortly after being wounded Johnston began to feel faint in the saddle. With blood filling up his boot, Johnston unwittingly bled to death. The delay caused by his death, and the transfer of command to subordinate P.G.T. Beauregard, bought the Union defenders critical time on April 6, and the following day Grant’s reinforced army struck back and pushed the Confederate army off the field.

The Battle of Shiloh lasted two days, but the battle over the battle had just begun. Grant’s army had just won the biggest battle in the history of North America, with nearly 24,000 combined casualties among the Union and Confederate forces. Usually the winner of a major battle is hailed as a hero, but Grant was hardly a winner at Shiloh. The Battle of Shiloh took place before costlier battles at places like Antietam and Gettysburg, so the extent of the casualties at Shiloh shocked the nation. Moreover, at Shiloh the casualties were viewed as needless; Grant was pilloried for allowing the Confederates to take his forces by surprise, as well as the failure to build defensive earthworks and fortifications, which nearly resulted in a rout of his army. Speculation again arose that Grant had a drinking problem, and some even assumed he was drunk during the battle. Though the Union won, it was largely viewed that their success owed to the heroics of General Sherman in rallying the men and Don Carlos Buell arriving with his army, and General Buell was happy to receive the credit at Grant’s expense.

As a result of the Battle of Shiloh, Grant was demoted to second-in-command of all armies in his department, an utterly powerless position. And when word of what many considered a “colossal blunder” reached Washington, several congressmen insisted that Lincoln replace Grant in the field. Lincoln famously defended Grant, telling critics, “I can’t spare this man. He fights.”

The Civil War in 1862 explains the campaign and events that led up to the decisive battle, what went right and wrong on both sides, and the aftermath of the battle. Accounts of the battle by important leaders like Sherman, Grant, and Braxton Bragg are included, along with analysis of the generals and fighting. Along with maps of the battle and pictures of important people, places, and events, you will learn about the Battle of Shiloh like you never have before.

Fire and Fury: The Allied Bombing of Germany, 1942-1945著者: Randall Hansen出版社: NAL Hardcover出版日: 2009年07月07日古本ほぼ新品。 During the Second World War, Allied air forces dropped nearly two million tons of bombs on Germany, destroying some 60 cities, killing more than half a million German citizens, and leaving 80,000 pilots dead. But the terrible truth is that much of the bombing was carried out against the expressed demands of the Allied military leadership, leading to the needless deaths of hundreds of thousands of civilians. Focusing on the crucial period from 1942 to 1945, "Fire and Fury" tells the story of the American and British bombing campaign through the eyes of those involved: the military and civilian command in America, Britain, and Germany, the aircrews in the skies who carried out their orders, and civilians on the ground who felt the fury of the Allied attacks. Here, for the first time, the story of the American and British air campaigns is told-and the cost accounted for.

Toward a Healthy Society The Morality and Politics of American Health Care Reform【電子書籍】[ Milton Fisk ]

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】Toward a Healthy Society The Morality and Politics of American Health Care Reform【電子書籍】[ Milton Fisk ]

Few issues concern the American public today more than health care. Just ask anyone who has sat for hours in an HMO waiting room or made countless phone calls trying to have a claim settledーor anyone who can’t get coverage. But whenever basic reform is proposed the insurance industry opens a massive campaign against it.

Health care today is part of big business, which in defeating the Clinton plan successfully pushed any kind of basic reform off the political agenda. Continuing citizen support for some form of public insurance is, says Milton Fisk, a sign that basic reform is still possible. In his book, he argues persuasively that basic reform goes beyond a matter of life and deathーit’s integral to maintaining a society where concern for others holds its own against the market.

Health care, observes Fisk, is not simply an individual responsibility but a public good much like education, and commitment to the social values underlying these public goods is essential to any just society. A healthy society as a value worth pursuing becomes an empty slogan when the poor get inferior health care, when workplaces are dangerous to health, and when a focus on medical treatment leaves out our bodies’ environment.

Taking in the broad sweep of social policy in the last half-century, Fisk describes the shift from welfare toward competitiveness as a key factor in the rise of corporate care in the United States. He analyzes the failure of the Clinton health care plan in detail and shows that its commitment to corporate health care was at odds with its reforming intent. He then argues that without national health insurance, needless obstacles will stand in the way of a healthy society. Ideally, the public fund behind this insurance would be derived from a progressive income tax.

Skillfully blending philosophy, economics, and public policy, Fisk’s book breaks new ground in political morality and raises important questions about the way people's needs for health care are being defined to satisfy corporate priorities. At a time when so many Americans can barely afford to get sick, no one concerned with this issue can afford to ignore this work of realism and vision.

Play Anything The Pleasure of Limits, the Uses of Boredom, and the Secret of Games【電子書籍】[ Ian Bogost ]

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】Play Anything The Pleasure of Limits, the Uses of Boredom, and the Secret of Games【電子書籍】[ Ian Bogost ]

How filling life with play-whether soccer or lawn mowing, counting sheep or tossing Angry Birds -- forges a new path for creativity and joy in our impatient age

Life is boring: filled with meetings and traffic, errands and emails. Nothing we'd ever call fun. But what if we've gotten fun wrong? In Play Anything, visionary game designer and philosopher Ian Bogost shows how we can overcome our daily anxiety; transforming the boring, ordinary world around us into one of endless, playful possibilities.

The key to this playful mindset lies in discovering the secret truth of fun and games. Play Anything, reveals that games appeal to us not because they are fun, but because they set limitations. Soccer wouldn't be soccer if it wasn't composed of two teams of eleven players using only their feet, heads, and torsos to get a ball into a goal; Tetris wouldn't be Tetris without falling pieces in characteristic shapes. Such rules seem needless, arbitrary, and difficult. Yet it is the limitations that make games enjoyable, just like it's the hard things in life that give it meaning.

Play is what happens when we accept these limitations, narrow our focus, and, consequently, have fun. Which is also how to live a good life. Manipulating a soccer ball into a goal is no different than treating ordinary circumstances- like grocery shopping, lawn mowing, and making PowerPoints-as sources for meaning and joy. We can "play anything" by filling our days with attention and discipline, devotion and love for the world as it really is, beyond our desires and fears.

Ranging from Internet culture to moral philosophy, ancient poetry to modern consumerism, Bogost shows us how today's chaotic world can only be tamed-and enjoyed-when we first impose boundaries on ourselves.

Roman tradition preserved in the first book of Livy presents a very circumstantial account of the several battles by which Rome supposedly razed the Latin cities one after another until she was supreme mistress of the Tiber valley. Needless to say, if the Latin tribe had lived in such civil discord as legend assumes, it would quickly have succumbed to the inroads of the mountain tribes, which were eagerly watching for opportunities to raid. Of course legend had to account somehow for the abandoned shrines and old place names scattered over Latium, and being unable to comprehend the slower processes of civilization, it took a more picturesque route, attached a rumor of war to a hero's name, and made the villages disappear in fire and blood.

The Lion and the Elephant【電子書籍】[ Charles John Andersson ]

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】The Lion and the Elephant【電子書籍】[ Charles John Andersson ]

"I and my Hottentots have killed eight hundred elephants." -Charles Andersson

"Trodden on by elephants, ripped up by the horn of a rhinoceros, suffering hunger and thirst, our author has survived all these dangers to write us a very interesting book." -The Rambler, 1856

"Charles Andersson was attacked and crushed to death by a wounded elephant...his passion for hunting led him into needless dangers." - New American Cyclopaedia, 1857

" As a martyr, Mr. Andersson is entitled to the sympathy of his readers." - North American Review, 1862

The late Charles John Andersson, the well-known big game hunter and explorer in Africa, and author of "Lake Ngami" and " The Okovango River," ended his days miserably, as so many other enterprising men had done before him, in the wilds of that continent, brought to an untimely end by the very game which he hunted. Andersson left behind him voluminous papers and notes on the hunting of the lion and elephant which were published in his famous 1873 book "The Lion and the Elephant."

Karl John (Karl Johan) Andersson (1827-1867) was an explorer, hunter and trader as well as an amateur naturalist and ornithologist, most famous for the many books he published about his travels, and for being one of the most notable explorers of southern Africa, mostly in present-day Namibia. He often needed to earn money through trade and hunting.

In 1850 Andersson arrived at the Cape of Good Hope and then travelled to Walvis Bay, in modern-day Namibia. They then trekked into the interior, at the time little explored by Europeans. They intended to reach Lake Ngami, but failed on that expedition. In 1855 he returned to London, where he published his book "Lake Ngami", in which he describes his travels. He returned to Africa the same year.

Back in south west Africa, Andersson was hired as manager for mines in what was then called Damaraland and Namaqualand. However, he only held the position for a brief time, and continued his explorations. In 1859 he reached the Okavango River, an expedition that he recorded in his book The Okavango River.

Andersson's "The Lion and the Elephant" is a collection of his writings on his experiences and knowledge of hunting lions and elephants during his explorations and expeditions in Africa.

In describing one attack by a lion, Andersson writes:

"The lion had watched him to his fireside, and he had scarcely lain down when the brute sprang upon him with his appalling murderous roar, and roaring as he lay, grappled him with his fearful claws... John Stofolus had lain with his back to the fire on the opposite side, and on hearing the lion he sprang up, and, seizing a large flaming brand belaboured him on the head..."

In describing a run-in with a rhinoceros, Andersson writes:

"I took up a stone and hurled it at her with all my force; when, snorting horribly, and raising clouds of dust with her feet, she rushed at me with fearful fury.... She laid me prostrate...and trampled on me with great violence ...."

The Protein Myth Significantly Reducing the Risk of Cancer, Heart Disease, Stoke and Diabetes while Saving the Animals and the Planet【電子書籍】[ David Gerow Irving ]

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】The Protein Myth Significantly Reducing the Risk of Cancer, Heart Disease, Stoke and Diabetes while Saving the Animals and the Planet【電子書籍】[ David Gerow Irving ]

The Protein Myth illustrates how we can avoid the major killer diseases by eliminating animal products from the diet. It challenges the healthcare establishment to stop ignoring the scientific evidence that a diet based on animal protein costs millions of lives. For example, why do the National Cancer Institute and the American Cancer Society turn a blind eye to the scientific facts that avoiding animal protein could prevent many women from getting breast cancer by lowering their oestrogen levels? The book links the Western diet to major problems facing the world such as 1) animal cruelty on factory farms, 2) the pollution of our atmosphere, rivers and streams, 3) obesity in children, 4) the needless vivisection of animals at university laboratories for the purpose of getting billions of tax dollars from the public, 5) the manufacture of drugs to treat counterfeit diseases, and 6) the creation of poverty in the developing world. The Protein Myth makes a compelling case that the way to a healthier life and a better world is to end our abuse and exploitation of animals.

Within You Is The Power - Create the Life You Want【電子書籍】[ Henry Thomas Hamblin ]

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】Within You Is The Power - Create the Life You Want【電子書籍】[ Henry Thomas Hamblin ]

There is a power lying hidden in man, by the use of which he can rise to higher and better things.

There is in man a greater Self, that transcends the finite self of the sense-man, even as the mountain towers above the plain.

The object of this little book is to help men and women to bring their inward powers of mind and spirit into expression, wisely and in harmony with universal law; to build up character, and to find within themselves that wondrous Self, which is their real self, and which, when found, reveals to them that they are literally and truly sons of God and daughters of the Most High.

There is no way whereby the discipline of life can be avoided. There is no means by which fate can be "tricked," nor cunning device by which the great cosmic plan can be evaded. Each life must meet its own troubles and difficulties: each soul must pass through its deep waters, every heart must encounter sorrow and grief. But none need be overwhelmed in the great conflicts of life, for one who has learned the great secret of his identity with the Universal life and Power, dwells in an impregnable city, built upon and into the Rock of Truth, against which the storms of life beat in vain.
While this little work does not offer any vain promises of an easy lifeーfor, if this were possible, it would be the greatest of all disastersーbut rather endeavours to show how to become so strong that life looks almost easy by comparison (the life or fate does not change or become easier, but the individual alters and becomes stronger), yet, it does show the reader how to avoid making his life more difficult than it need be. Most people's lives would be less filled with trouble and suffering if they took life in the right spirit and acted in harmony with Universal Law.

It is hoped that this little book may help many to come into harmony with life's law and purpose and thus avoid much needless suffering: to find the Greater Self within, which discovery brings with it a realization of absolute security: to bring into expression and wisely use their inner spiritual and mental forces and thus enter a life of overcoming and almost boundless power.

A's Bad as It Gets Connie Mack's Pathetic Athletics of 1916【電子書籍】[ John G. Robertson ]

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】A's Bad as It Gets Connie Mack's Pathetic Athletics of 1916【電子書籍】[ John G. Robertson ]

This work is a game-by-game account of the Philadelphia Athletics' pitiful 1916 season, in which they won just 36 of 154 games. It starts with a brief biography of the team's living symbol--A's manager and co-owner Connie Mack--and moves through the birth of the franchise and into its first era of glory in which the A's won world championships in 1910, 1911, and 1913. Following the A's stunning defeat in the 1914 World Series to the underdog Boston Braves, Mack dismantled his championship club and finished last in the American League for seven straight seasons. The 1916 campaign was the nadir. The team's few solid veterans had a supporting cast of underachievers, college boys, raw rookies, no-hopers, and sub-par pitching. The book chronicles the daily grind of a team that had no chance to begin with and quickly became the laughingstock of the AL. Many humorous anecdotes, needless to say!
