＜p＞When this book was published for the first time in 1962, Shri Jaiprakash Narayan wrote in the introduction that this book, written on such an important subject as socialism by a business tycoon, should be welcomed. He expressed some reservations about the slightly unorganised structure and a few digressions in the book. In order to remove these shortcomings, the manuscript of the book was given to me by my friend Kamal Morarka (the son of the author) before the present edition was printed. I have tried to do this job to the best of my ability, yet I have taken care that the basic content of the book does not suffer even a scratch. , While editing the book, I felt how nice it would be if this book was prescribed in schools and colleges as a textbook of economics. If students have to take the help of a foreign language to learn the knowledge of trade and commerce in which our country and our languages were very rich, then it would be as ridiculous as ‘carrying coals to Newcastle’. But, unfortunately, this is the present trend, wherein the efforts should be to teach not only economics, but all disciplines of knowledge and the sciences in our own languages. By doing this not only the needless waste of the time and energy of the students could be avoided, but at least one-third of the time would be saved in the curricula related to medicine and engineering. But this realisation has not yet dawned on the intelligentsia and educationists of this country. They are all caught up in the delusion of the Knowledge Commission of the Government of India. Although we are unable to contribute any original thought, our educational centres have become the junkyards of the world and the scholars coming out of these institutions are but educated indentured labourers for the foreign countries., At this juncture when the book is going to press, this feeling has become all the more acute. The reason for this is that the capitalist system is in such crises that it is difficult for us to even comprehend it. An economic depression which began in some large financial companies of America is grabbing all the economies of the world in its clutches. This epidemic has become for us like some unfathomable celestial calamity, and to ward it off we have no other recourse except to resort to spell-like conjurings. Our government or the institution (Reserve Bank of India) which regulates the financial system is trying to stem off this depression by blindly imitating the central banks of America, England, France, etc. We can see now that the analysis of capitalism, carried out by scholars like Adam Smith, Marx, Keynes, etc., is proving to be inadequate in reference to the present crisis and the essay ‘Economics after Marx’ by the eminent socialist thinker Dr. Ram Manohar Lohia has become more relevant., The crisis of capitalism can be resolved only by following the path of socialism. This is the subject of this book, and it is interesting to note that it is an advocacy of socialism by a capitalist. Inspired by George Bernard Shaw’s book The Intelligent Women’s Guide to Socialism, this book can help us to understand the present economic crisis of the world. Some chapters of this book especially, ‘The Magical Illusion of Extra Money’, ‘Various Forms of Cost Capital’, ‘The Capital Market’, ‘Speculation’, ‘Banking’, ‘Money’, ‘Currency Control’, etc., are very relevant right now. In the entire book one will not come across the second- or third-hand bookish knowledge which is often found in the works of university teachers; rather, lively and energising knowledge infused with insights from direct experience. The whole has been rewritten; and embodies the writer’s mature thought about the greatest work of the greatest of the apostles of Christ.＜/p＞ ＜p＞My purpose in writing and rewriting is identical with that of the epistle annotated, as I understand it, viz. to set before the readers the Gospel of Christ as Paul understood it, in order that by intelligent faith they may embrace, or embrace more fully, the salvation announced by Christ, and thus find in Him eternal life: cp. Jno. 20:31. In other words, my aim has been to bridge over nineteen centuries and to place modern English readers as nearly as possible in the position of those who first heard the epistle read at Rome.＜/p＞ ＜p＞It is therefore a contribution to Doctrinal Theology: for Paul wrote in order to set before the Christians at Rome an orderly, and within its limits complete, account of the Gospel. But it is in nowise dogmatic: for my statements and arguments rest, not on authority, but on evidence adduced. My aim has been simply to learn and reproduce Paul’s own rational conception of Christ and the Gospel. And this is the highest aim of all Biblical research. This volume is also a contribution to Christian Evidences. For Paul wrote and argued in order to produce and strengthen in his readers an intelligent conviction of the truth of the Gospel: and I have endeavoured to reproduce and estimate his arguments.＜/p＞ ＜p＞Whatever is needful for these ends, I have, to the best of my ability, done. I have adduced decisive proof that this letter actually came from the pen of Paul; and that it is fairly reproduced, as he wrote it, in our modern copies, English and Greek. Where the ancient copies differ so as to affect theological teaching, and where serious doubt exists as to the true reading, I have discussed the difference, as in chs. 3:28, 5:1, 8:11. I have also carefully discussed the meaning and associations of thought of the words and phrases of the epistle. These are of utmost importance, as the very alphabet of theology. In the more important cases, the results of this study are embodied in separate notes. I have also endeavoured to trace the apostle’s line of thought and argument, which I have embodied in frequent recapitulations. Throughout the work, I have sought for the general theological conceptions underlying the epistle. This is needful even for correct exposition; for only in the light of a writer’s general conceptions can we understand his language. Moreover the thoughts of Paul, as expressed in his epistles, are one chief avenue of approach to the actual teaching of Christ and to the eternal realities underlying His Gospel. The results of this study, I have embodied in dissertations at the close of this volume.＜/p＞ ＜p＞My chief aid has been careful grammatical study of the Greek text. But it was needless to reprint it: for each student will use his own copy of the Greek Testament or English Bible. The English translation here given was needful in order to explain to scholars how I interpret Paul’s Greek words, and to give to all readers a consecutive text of the epistle. Although the whole work is based on the Greek text, there has been little need for Greek type: for all scholars will recognise my constant reference to the original. This will make my work more helpful to many intelligent men and women who are eager to follow as closely as possible the teaching of Paul but are not familiar with the niceties of Greek grammar. By early afternoon, 807 Canadians lay dead in and around Dieppe. Another 100 would die of wounds, and in captivity, and about 1900 more would sit out the rest of the war in POW camps. The intent of this paper is not to refight the battle in detail, but to examine the strategic implications of the raid in terms of future operations by the Allies. This paper will also inform the reader on the utility of the mission given the tragic loss of life that day. These include the pharynx, nasal passages, mouth, bone cavities of the faceーin fact pretty much every hollow space in the head, every space that will resound in response to vibration and assist in multiplying it. Moreover, the cavities of resonance by their differences in shape in different individuals determine the timbre or quality of individual voices. The chest, although situated below the larynx, is a resonance cavity of voice. In fact, in a certain register its vibration is felt so distinctly that we speak of these notes as being sung in the "chest register," which, so far as it implies that the tones are produced in the chest, is a misnomer. ＜p＞The Cincinnati Penal Congress of 1870 ushered in the era of "progressive" penology: the use of statistical and social scientific methodologies, commitment to psychiatric and therapeutic interventions, and a new innovation--the reformatory--as the locus for the application of these initiatives. The prisoner was now seen as a specimen to be analyzed, treated, and properly socialized into the triumphal current of American social and economic life. The Progressive rehabilitative initiatives succumbed in the 1970s to withering criticism from the proponents of equally futile strategies for addressing "the crime problem": retribution, deterrence, and selective incapacitation. The early Christian community developed a methodology for correcting human error that featured the unprecedented belief that a period of time spent in a given penitential locale, with the aid and encouragement of the community, was sufficient in and of itself to heal the alienation and self-loathing caused by sin and to lead an individual to full reincorporation into the community. The "correctional" practice was based upon the conviction that cooperative sociability--or conversion--is possible, regardless of the specific offense, without any need to inflict suffering, or to use the act of punishment as a warning to potential offenders, or to undertake programmatic interventions into the lives of the incarcerated for the purpose of rehabilitating them. Andrew Skotnicki contends that the modern practice of criminal detention is a protracted exercise in needless violence predicated upon two foundational errors. The first is an inability to see the imprisoned as human beings fully capable of responding to an affirmative accompaniment rather than maltreatment and invasive forms of therapy. The second is a pervasive dualism that constructs a barrier between detainees and those empowered to supervise, rehabilitate, and punish them. Rommel's operations are reviewed from his arrival in North Africa in February 1941 through his last offensive to destroy the British Eighth Army at Alamein in August-September 1942. The study compares his ability to conduct tactical operations with his apparent inability to plan and execute actions at the operational level of war. Rommel's problems with operational planning are addressed within the scope of campaign planning principles set forth in FM 100-5, Operations, (Final Draft). His planning is expressly judged on how he shaped his operational plans by using the concepts of aims, resources, constraints, and restrictions to conform to strategic guidance. Rommel's tactical execution is contrasted with his operational performance. This comparison is based on the AirLand Battle tenets of agility, initiative, depth, and synchronization. The study concludes that Rommel's failure lies in planning operations that exceeded his resources and conducting needless operations that resulted in the loss of the initiative at the decisive point. Rommel's plans exceeded the strategic objectives desired by the theater strategists. His execution was ultimately defeated by his quest for tactical victories without regard to how they contributed to achieving campaign objectives. Rommel's weakness at the operational level led to failure to sequence tactical victories to achieve campaign goals.
