The conditions of our knowledge of the native religion of early Rome may perhaps be best illustrated by a parallel from Roman arch?ology. The visitor to the Roman Forum at the present day, if he wishes to reconstruct in imagination the Forum of the early Republic, must not merely 'think away' many strata of later buildings, but, we are told, must picture to himself a totally different orientation of the whole: the upper layer of remains, which he sees before him, is for his purpose in most cases not merely useless, but positively misleading. In the same way, if we wish to form a picture of the genuine Roman religion, we cannot find it immediately in classical literature; we must banish from our minds all that is due to the contact with the East and Egypt, and even with the other races of Italy, and we must imagine, so to speak, a totally different mental orientation before the great influx of Greek literature and Greek thought, which gave an entirely new turn to Roman ideas in general, and in particular revolutionised religion by the introduction of anthropomorphic notions and sensuous representations. But in this difficult search we are not left without indications to guide us. In the writings of the savants of the late Republic and of the Empire, and in the Augustan poets, biassed though they are in their interpretations by Greek tendencies, there is embodied a great wealth of ancient custom and ritual, which becomes significant when we have once got the clue to its meaning. More direct evidence is afforded by a large body of inscriptions and monuments, and above all by the surviving Calendars of the Roman festival year, which give us the true outline of the ceremonial observances of the early religion.
It is not within the scope of this sketch to enter, except by way of occasional illustration, into the process of interpretation by which the patient work of scholars has disentangled the form and spirit of the native religion from the mass of foreign accretions. I intend rather to assume the process, and deal, as far as it ispossible in so controversial a subject, with results upon which authorities are generally agreed. Neither will any attempt be made to follow the development which the early religion underwent in later periods, when foreign elements were added and foreign ideas altered and remoulded the old tradition. We must confine ourselves to a single epoch, in which the native Roman spirit worked out unaided the ideas inherited from half-civilised ancestors, and formed that body of belief and ritual, which was always, at least officially, the kernel of Roman religion, and constituted what the Romans themselvesーstaunch believers in their own traditional historyーloved to describe as the 'Religion of Numa.' We must discover, as far as we can, how far its inherited notions ran parallel with those of other primitive religions, but more especially we must try to note what is characteristically Roman alike in custom and ritual and in the motives and spirit which prompted them...

Mind power - the secret of mental magic【電子書籍】[ William Walker Atkinson ]

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】Mind power - the secret of mental magic【電子書籍】[ William Walker Atkinson ]

In Leipzig, Germany, in 1866 there stood an old three-story mansion, used as a manufactory of mechanical toys. An American student attending the university was invited to visit the showrooms in the upper story and became intently interested in the surprising exhibition of inventive genius. As the visitor descended to the second and first floors he visited the rooms where machinery of many kinds was turning out various parts of the toys. But when he ventured to descend to the cellar to look at the power plant he found "No admission" on every door. But he was more disappointed when he was told that the "designing room," where the toys were invented and the drawings made, was in the subcellar. In order to preserve their patents and their secret processes, even the workmen on the upper floors were forbidden ever to look into the subcellar.
That illustrative fact came forcibly to mind when meditating long over a letter written by a praying student and author who said that he felt sure that the only direct passage between the human soul and the world spirits is through the subconscious mind. From that subcellar of the soul come ideas, impulses, and suggestions which most largely influence our actions. But we are forbidden to enter that department to examine the plans or listen to the wireless dispatches from the spirit world so continuously received there. "No admission" is posted on every door to the subcellar designing room of the human soul. We get the blue prints of new plans, or read suggestions for new or improved work sent up to our brains. But who makes them we do not know. In the impenetrable regions of our mental and spiritual nature are formulated many ideas and moral laws which we must blindly obey. A man is what he thinks, and the larger portion of his thinking is originated or molded in his subconscious self.

The First Ghost at Willington Mill, Newcastle-Upon-Tyne, 1630.

Since the nineteenth century, it was rumoured that the area purchased by the Proctor family at Willington Quay, near Newcastle, had been haunted for many years before they built a mill on the land. Little did those people know that those rumours would turn out so true.

Two hundred years prior, in the year of 1630, upon Saint Thomas Day, four days before Christmas, a miller was working hard within the walk-mill at Willington, whereupon he was startled by a visit of a ghostly woman, her clothes were a stunning white, her face was covered by a blooded veil, who told him that he must seek out the man responsible for her death ? a man living in Lumley, many miles away, in the County of Durham. The apparition said that she would continuously haunt him until he did what he was told.

From that most singular moment, the old miller’s quest to discover more of why he was being so dreadfully haunted and the circumstances of his visitor’s death, would eventually lead him into something more powerful that neither he nor anyone afterward could possibly imagine…

…The Fair Maiden’s Secret.

The Egypt of the Hebrews and Herodotos【電子書籍】[ A. H. Sayce ]

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】The Egypt of the Hebrews and Herodotos【電子書籍】[ A. H. Sayce ]

A few words of preface are needful to justify the addition of another contribution to the over-abundant mass of literature of which Egypt is the subject. It is intended to supplement the books already in the hands of tourists and students, and to put before them just that information which either is not readily accessible or else forms part of larger and cumbrous works. The travels of Herodotos in Egypt are followed for the first time in the light of recent discoveries, and the history of the intercourse between the Egyptians and the Jews is brought down to the age of the Roman Empire. As the ordinary histories of Egypt used by travellers end with the extinction of the native Pharaohs, I have further given a sketch of the Ptolemaic period. I have moreover specially noted the results of the recent excavations and discoveries made by the Egypt Exploration Fund and by Professor Flinders Petrie, at all events where they bear upon the subject-matter of the book. Those who have not the publications of the Fund or of Professor Petrie, or who do not care to carry them into Egypt, will, I believe, be glad to have the essence of them thus extracted in a convenient shape. Lastly, in the Appendices I have put together information which the visitor to the Nile often wishes to obtain, but which he can find in none of his guide-books.

Alternity A Novel【電子書籍】[ W.R. Hammons ]

Hammons ]

Warning: a detailed plot synopsis (spoiler!) follows. Wally Bayer is a graduate student of physics at Adams College in upstate New York who, along with his professor Alan Earhart and several others, is working on a top-secret time travel project funded by the Pentagon. Lieutenant Colonel Adam Halstead, a military history instructor at nearby West Point and a liaison with the project team, attempts to hijack the Box (as the enormous chromium cube-shaped time machine is nicknamed) with the assistance of twelve recruits from an Idaho right-wing militia. Halsteads men accidentally kill Earhart during their intrusion of the laboratory that houses the Box, then force all of his assistants but Bayer to flee for their lives as they prepare to travel to November 11, 1918. Bayer starts up the time machine, then, to avoid death at Halsteads hands, leaps into the capsule that is dropped into a vertical tunnel containing an altered quantum state. Halstead leaps onto the outside of the capsule, and follows Bayer into the year 1918. Both men arrive in a subterranean lake beneath the laboratory site, and Halstead follows Bayer to the surface. Once again, Bayer escapes from Halstead, this time leaving him alone in the forest with a twisted ankle. Bayer comes across a horse-drawn wagon on a rutted road, and accepts a ride into the town of Monroe, New York from an odd stranger. Bayer is able to tell himself he is still in the year 2003 until he sees a Model T rumbling along a cross street as the wagon approaches the town. The bewildered visitor from the future manages to find a job on a dairy farm, and settles down to earn a living until he figures out what he will do next. Halstead, meanwhile, has traveled to chaotic postwar Germany via Denmark, and arrives in Berlin to visit the renowned plastic surgeon Jacques Joseph. Dr. Joseph, with the assistance of an anesthesiologist, gives Halstead a new face before both he and his assistant are brutally murdered by the patient. The still-bandaged Halstead, dressed in a Reichswehr corporals uniform, travels to the city of Pasewalk, where he begins the trailing of a man upon that mans release from the local military hospital. Halstead and his quarry travel by train to Munich, where the former murders the latter by means of a lethal injection and drags the body across a pair of railroad tracks in the middle of the night. The defaced corpse of the victim is left for mutilation by an oncoming train, and Halstead reports to the barracks of the Sixteenth Bavarian Reserve Infantry Regiment as Corporal Adolf Hitler, complete with two iron crosses pinned to his chest. In January 1919, Halstead appears as Hitler at the first meeting of the newly-formed German Workers Party. Halstead rapidly takes over the fledgling organization and grows it with carefully prepared nationalistic rants and ingenious organizational methods. In order to gain even more power and prestige, Halstead involves his Ordnertruppe (as the S.A. was originally known) in the spring 1919 right-wing suppression of the short-lived Bavarian Communist regime. Wally has settled into farm life, meanwhile, and begins a flirtation with his employers eldest daughter that turns serious with the arrival of spring. Both of Sally Darcy's parents die in the 1919 flu epidemic, and Wally takes over the family farm when he marries the expectant Sally. Wally uses his foresight from the future and arranges a partnership with Frankie Yale of New York City, a mobster and one-time employer of Al Capone. Wally begins the illicit manufacture of gin on his upstate farm, and ships the liquid in milk trucks to New York for distribution by Yale. With the onset of Prohibition in early 1920, the profits start to accumulate, and Wally begins to invest in the stock market. Halstead has also been busy, having traveled to Egypt with Rudolf Hess in search of a collection of Coptic manuscripts that include the Gospel of Thomas, a long-lost

Any visitor to Belgium or the Netherlands is immediately struck by the number of convents and beguinages (begijnhoven) in both major cities and small towns. Their number and location in urban centres suggests that the women who inhabited them once held a prominent role. Despite leaving a visible mark on cities in Europe, much of the story of these women - known variously as beguines, tertiaries, klopjes, recluses, and anchoresses - remains to be told. Instead of aspiring to live as traditional religious, they transcended normative assumptions about religion and gender and had a very real impact on their religious and secular worlds. The sources for their tale are often fragmentary and difficult to interpret. However, careful scrutiny allows their voices to be heard. Drawing on an array of sources including religious rules, sermons, hagiographic vitae, and rapiaria, Fictive Orders and Feminine Religious Identities traces the story of pious laywomen between the thirteenth and sixteenth centuries. It both emphasizes the innovative roles of women who transcended established forms of institutional religious life and reveals the ways in which historiographical habits have obscured the dynamic and fluid nature of their histories. By highlighting the development of irregular and extraregular communities and tracing the threads of monasticisation that wove their way around pious laywomen, this book draws attention to the vibrant and dynamic culture of feminine lay piety that persisted from the later middle ages onwards.

Earth is Our Planet, Too!

The goal and purpose of Earth is Our Planet, Too! is uncovering the truth about the real history of Earth. Chapter One covers the long history of the Jersey Devil, and the wide variety of people from all walks of life that saw this creature in New Jersey, and the neighboring states. To this day its identity remains a mystery. Many people have tried and failed to discover its origins. The mystery of what it is came from the ancient writings of a highly unlikely source, a Catholic Bishop from Germany.

Taking this new approach paid off, as this remarkable information soon provided amazing insights to resolve other mysteries that have baffled mankind for thousands of years. Author Steve Pearse covers other mysteries such as the Mothman, the Snallygaster, the Piasa, the Native American legends of the Thunderbird, and the Van Meter Visitor. The truth was discovered by simply paying attention to the many fragments of history and mythology. The truth became self evident as the puzzle pieces came together to finally reveal the identity of the demons and monsters of earth. Nearly all of the dinosaurs died out 65 million years ago, but some of them evolved becoming Theropods--primitive dino-birds...

BYU Studies volume 49, no. 4, features six articles, leading off with Jeffrey Chadwick’s article exploring the date of birth of Jesus Christ. He uses historical and scriptural evidence to propose that Christ was born in December 5 B.C.

Next in the issue is an excerpt from a forthcoming book of the best speeches of Robert K. Thomas (19181998). This speech describes how we can successfully accomplish great work with genuine faith and creativity. Then, George Handley describes a poetics of the Restoration: a way of seeing the humanities as a key to furthering our understanding of truth and expanding our views of God and humankind.

Casey Griffiths examines the conflict between religious faith and religious scholarship through the experience of eleven LDS scholars who studied at the University of Chicago School of Divinity in the 1930s. Boyd Edwards and Farrell Edwards use statistical admissibility tests to counter claims that chiasmus appears without the intention of the author in many writings. They verify that certain passages in the Old Testament and in the Book of Mormon show deliberate chiasmus, while Strangite scripture, the Doctrine and Covenants, nursery rhymes, Dr. Seuss, and other works are not intentionally chiastic. Hal Robert Boyd and Susan Easton Black present a never-before-published letter written to Joseph Smith by a visitor to Nauvoo in 1844. The letter’s author, Robert McCorkle, had a very favorable impression of Nauvoo, and he wrote his comments and questions in verse. Susan Easton Black writes about an LDS newspaper printed in St. Louis, Missouri, from 1854 to 1855. The content of the paper included articles defending polygamy, news from the Salt Lake Valley, local Church news, advice on immigration to Utah, missionary news, marriage and death notices, and more.

An essay by David Milo Kirkham describes his interactions with animals and suggests that the human stewardship over animals should be more nuanced and thoughtful than always protecting animals or always dominating them. Finally, this issue also includes poetry and book reviews.

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】From Congregation Town to Industrial City Culture and Social Change in a Southern Community【電子書籍】[ Michael Shirley ]

In 1835, Winston and Salem was a well-ordered, bucolic, and attractive North Carolina town. A visitor could walk up Main Street from the village square and get a sense of the quiet Moravian community that had settled here. Yet, over the next half-century, this idyllic village was to experience dramatic changes.
The Industrial Revolution calls forth images of great factories, mills, and machinery; yet, the character of the Industrial Revolution went beyond mere changes in modes of production. It meant the radical transformation of economic, social, and political institutions, and the emergence of a new mindset that brought about new ways of thinking and acting.
Here is the illuminating story of Winston-Salem, a community of artisans and small farmers united, as members of a religious congregation, by a single vision of life. Transformed in just a few decades from an agricultural region into the home of the smokestacks and office towers of the R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company and the Wachovia Bank and Trust Company, the Moravian community at Salem offers an illuminating illustration of the changes that swept Southern society in the nineteenth century and the concomitant development in these communities of a new ethos. Providing a rich wealth of information about the Winston-Salem community specifically, From Congregation Town to Industrial City also significantly broadens our understanding of how wholesale changes in the nineteenth century South redefined the meaning and experience of community. For, by the end of the century, community had gained an entirely new meaning, namely as a forum in which competing individuals pursued private opportunities and interests.

The Hospitality of God A Reading of Luke's Gospel【電子書籍】[ Brendan Byrne SJ ]

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】The Hospitality of God A Reading of Luke's Gospel【電子書籍】[ Brendan Byrne SJ ]

Luke portrays the life and ministry of Jesus as a divine "visitation" to the world, seeking hospitality. The One who comes as visitor and guest becomes host and offers a hospitality in which the entire world can become truly human, be at home, and know salvation in the depths of their hearts. In this new edition of The Hospitality of God, Brendan Byrne, SJ, provides to-the-point commentary on those parts of Luke's gospel that bring home to people a sense of the extravagance of God's love for them.

The Hospitality of God approaches Luke's gospel through the interpretive key of "hospitality." It looks at the gospel as a whole, yet lingers upon scenes where the theme of hospitality is particularly prominent, such as the infancy stories, Jesus at Nazareth, Jesus in the house of Simon, the Good Samaritan, Martha and Mary, the banquet in 14:1-35, the Prodigal Son, Jesus' visit to the tax collector Zacchaeus, the institution of the Eucharist, and the Emmaus event.

This revised edition includes a new introductory chapter titled “Features of Luke,” which includes distinctive themes and motifs of the gospel that invite all to join in the life-giving hospitality of God. This revised edition is an excellent resource for students, teachers, and pastors interested in Luke’s gospel or in search of a helpful perspective for pastoral and homiletic reflection and preparation.

Memories Myths and Dreams of an Ojibwe Leader【電子書籍】[ William Berens ]

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】Memories Myths and Dreams of an Ojibwe Leader【電子書籍】[ William Berens ]

Because the elderly chief wanted his visitor to understand the Ojibwe world and because Hallowell was deeply interested in his subject matter and was such a good listener Berens freely related his dreams and other stories about encounters with powerful beings. The fact that he also shared traditional myths in summer when Ojibwe people thought it dangerous to discuss such things shows the depth of his relationship with Hallowell. Berens' reminiscences and story and myth texts are unparalleled as sources for the life experiences and outlook of this important Ojibwe leader and for the insights they provide into the history and culture of his people. Rooted in the collaboration between Berens as steward of his oral traditions and Hallowell as creator and guardian of their written versions Memories Myths and Dreams of an Ojibwe Leader draws the reader into the world - and world view - of Chief Berens showing how an Aboriginal Christian of the early twentieth century could simultaneously take part in "modern" and "traditional" Ojibwe life.

A Short History of the Silk Road【電子書籍】[ Jonathan Clements ]

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】A Short History of the Silk Road【電子書籍】[ Jonathan Clements ]

The Silk Road is not a place, but a journey, a route from the edges of the Mediterranean to the central plains of China, through high mountains and inhospitable deserts. For thousands of years its history has been a traveller's history, of brief encounters in desert towns, snowbound passes and nameless forts. It was the conduit that first brought Buddhism, Christianity and Islam into China, and the site of much of the "Great Game" between 19th-century empires. Today, its central section encompasses several former Soviet republics, and the Chinese Autonomous Region of Xinjiang. The ancient trade route controversially crosses the sites of several forgotten kingdoms, buried in sand and only now revealing their secrets. An Armchair Traveller's History of the Silk Road not only offers the reader a chronological outline of the region's development, but also provides an invaluable introduction to its languages, literature and arts. It takes a comprehensive and illuminating look at the rich history of this dynamic and littleknown region, and provides an easy-to-use reference source. Clements pays particular attention to the fascinating historical sites which feature on any visitor's itinerary and special emphasis is also given to the writings and reactions of travellers through the centuries.

First published in 1883. "Although most educated people know that Melbourne, Sydney, and Adelaide are populous towns, I should doubt whether one Englishman, who has not been to Australia, out of a hundred realizes that fact. I well remember that, although I had taken some trouble to read up information about Melbourne, I was never more thoroughly surprised than during the first few hours after my arrival there. And I hear almost everyone who comes out from England say that his experience has been the same as my own. In one sense the visitor is disappointed with his first day in an Australian city. The novelties and the differences from the Old Country do not strike him nearly so much as the resemblances. It is only as he gets to know the place better that he begins to to notice the differences. The first prevailing impression is that a slice of Liverpool has been bodily transplanted to the Antipodes, that you must have landed in England again by mistake, and it is only by degrees that you begin to see that the resemblance is more superficial than real."

The Soul Of Nicholas Snyders
by Jerome K. Jerome

Once upon a time in Zandam, which is by the Zuider Zee, there lived a wicked man named Nicholas Snyders. He was mean and hard and cruel, and loved but one thing in the world, and that was gold. And even that not for its own sake. He loved the power gold gave himーthe power to tyrannize and to oppress, the power to cause suffering at his will. They said he had no soul, but there they were wrong. All men ownーor, to speak more correctly, are owned byーa soul; and the soul of Nicholas Snyders was an evil soul. He lived in the old windmill which still is standing on the quay, with only little Christina to wait upon him and keep house for him. Christina was an orphan whose parents had died in debt. Nicholas, to Christina's everlasting gratitude, had cleared their memoryーit cost but a few hundred florinsーin consideration that Christina should work for him without wages. Christina formed his entire household, and only one willing visitor ever darkened his door, the widow Toelast. Dame Toelast was rich and almost as great a miser as Nicholas himself. "Why should not we two marry?" Nicholas had once croaked to the widow Toelast. "Together we should be masters of all Zandam." Dame Toelast had answered with a cackling laugh; but Nicholas was never in haste.

About The Author :-

Jerome K. Jerome, born on May 2, 1859, in Staffordshire, England, was an actor and teacher before becoming a popular novelist with The Idle Thoughts of an Idle Fellow. 【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】Lucky Rice My Story Is Your Story of Abundance Beauty Composure Discipline and Enlightenment【電子書籍】[ Timothy Brennan ]

This award winning eBook describes the first meetings of a traditional rice farmer, his family and a young visitor from a western city. Spanning the course of a single day and punctuated by discussions of what constitutes a deeply fulfilling life, the wise rice farmer gently guides the young visitor to that sacred place we all instinctively care for and hold dear - our own heart. Lucky Rice is a positive and upbeat story that whispers the origins of authentic spiritual practice to all who care to listen. Excerpt From “Lucky Rice.” “Let me tell you big secret, Mister Tim” said the rice farmer, leaning over and whispering so only I could hear. “My job is to grow the rice! Yet, She does it all. It just happens automatically from Her side. "Sunshine comes with light and warmth. Clouds bring rain. Mud gives nourishment. "They all help me to grow rice. “Why they come? Why they come together to help me?” asked the rice farmer. I didn’t know the answer. “I don’t think anybody knows,” I said as I shook my head. The rice farmer leaned back into his chair and said, “I have thought about this a lot. “The only answer I have is the well-being of billions of people is very important to Her. Rice gives life. No rice no life,” as his words trailed off into silence. And then the rice farmer said something that I will never forget.” “She sends her rice out of love. Our rice is a reflection of Her divinity.” We all sat in silence for a moment. We could feel his heart. “Knowing we have this help releases me from worry and discontent,” he said. “I realize if I do my part, She will do Her part and rice will grow. Being satisfied with this simplicity leads to my composure,” said the rice farmer. “I need to be free of worry,” I said to myself. “Do you think Mother would extend Her gifts to someone like me if I am not growing rice?” I asked... 【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】Where Angels Walk (25th Anniversary Edition) True Stories of Heavenly Visitors【電子書籍】[ Joan Wester Anderson ]

We don't hear much about angels nowadays. When we do, they have often been secularized or commercialized. Instead of ministering angels who reveal God’s love and mercy, we hear about “angel investors” or we gobble up foil-wrapped chocolate angels at Christmas. But Joan Wester Anderson trusts that angels still walk among us.

On mountain slopes, on desolate rural highways, in airplane cockpitsーthese are just a few of the many places where ordinary people have felt the very real presence and power of God’s angels at work in their lives. In this twenty-fifth anniversary edition of her New York Times best-selling book Where Angels Walk, Joan Wester Anderson (the “Angel Lady”) offers dozens of reasonsーstories, actuallyーfor us to reconsider our rather limited view of angels. In addition to the original collection of angelic encounters, several new stories have been included.

Anderson, who holds traditional Christian beliefs about angels, was careful to select only those stories that had a ring of truth to them. But are they true? Do heavenly visitors really walk among us? The Port of Houston A History【電子書籍】[ Marilyn McAdams Sibley ]

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】The Port of Houston A History【電子書籍】[ Marilyn McAdams Sibley ]

Sam Houston's army reached Buffalo Bayou on April 18, 1836, and the ensuing Battle of San Jacinto called attention to the "meandering stream" as a link between the interior of sprawling Texas and the sea. Early in Texas history, the waterway that would one day be known as the Houston Ship Channel evoked dreams in the minds of the enterprising. How these dreams became realities that surpassed all expectation is the subject of Marilyn McAdams Sibley's The Port of Houston: A History. It is the story of the growth of an unlikely inland port situated at a "tent city" that many Texans thought would die young. It proves, as an early visitor to Houston noted, that future greatness depends not so much on location of port or town as on an enterprising population. Controversy between dreamers and promoters is a large part of the story. Was Houston or Harrisburg the head of navigation? Was the shallow stream valuable enough to the nation to warrant the costly deep-water dredging? Was Houston or Galveston to command the trade where land and water meet? As the issues were settled, Houston had spread out to overtake Harrisburg; deep water was achieved in 1914 and was celebrated by ceremonies in which the President of the United States played a part; and Galveston grew into a self-contained island metropolis while Houston became, in the words of Sibley, "the perennial boom town of twentieth-century Texas." As the Port of Houston continued to grow into a multi-billion-dollar institution serving and served by the cotton, wheat, oil, and space industries, its full economic impact on the city of Houston, the state, and the nation cannot be estimated in dollars and cents. But a glance at the trade statistics in the Appendix alone will give some idea of the world-wide value of this thriving port. The many interesting illustrations accompanying Mrs. Sibley's story show in graphic terms the growth of a small town on a stream "of a very inconvenient size;ーnot quite narrow enough to jump over, a little too deep to wade through without taking off your shoes" into an international complex through which almost $4 billion in cargo passed in its fiftieth-anniversary year.

The Greek myths have a universal appeal, reaching far beyond the time and physical place in which they were created. Royal Spectacle The 1860 Visit of the Prince of Wales to Canada and the United States【電子書籍】[ Ian Radforth ]

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】Royal Spectacle The 1860 Visit of the Prince of Wales to Canada and the United States【電子書籍】[ Ian Radforth ]

In 1860, Queen Victoria sent her eighteen-year-old son, Albert Edward, Prince of Wales, on a goodwill mission to Canada and the United States. The young heir-apparent (later King Edward VII) had not yet gained his reputation as a fashion setter and rake, but he nevertheless attracted enormous crowds both in Canada, where it was the first royal visit, and in the United States. Civic leaders hosted the visitor in princely style, decorating their towns with triumphal arches and organizing royal entries, public processions, openings, and grand balls.

In Royal Spectacle, Ian Radforth recreates these displays of civic pride by making use of the many public and private accounts of them, and he analyses the heated controversies the visit provoked. When communities rushed to honour the prince and put themselves on display, social divisions inadvertently became part of the spectacle seen by the prince and described by visiting journalists. Street theatre reached a climax in Kingston, where the Prince of Wales could not disembark from his steamer because of the defiance of thousands of Orangemen dressed in their brilliant regalia and waiving their banners.

Contemporary depictions of the tour provide an opportunity to interpret the cultural values and social differences that shaped Canada during the Confederation decade and the United States on the eve of the Civil War. Topics explored include Orange-Green conflict, First Nations and the politics of public display, contested representations of race and gender, the tourist gaze, and meanings of crown and empire. An original and erudite study, Royal Spectacle contributes greatly to historical research on public spectacle, colonial and national identities, Britishness in the Atlantic world, and the history of the monarchy.
