The Red Rucksack【電子書籍】[ Ben J West ]

Deeply disillusioned with life, Ben sells his share of a profitable pharmacy, puts his house on the market and casts off to find happiness. A love of mountains leads him to tackle the Himalayas where he saves an ill-balanced Sherpa before he strikes out to explore the Gobi desert in a rattly, old Russian van. Ben's next stop is South America where he falls in love with both paragliding and one very fetching Danish lawyer. Ben's knack for following remote, rocky paths, and befriending the quirky characters on the way, often leads to comical misadventure, but also to moments of breathtaking wonderment and awe.
Ben's journey does not involve meditating with orange-robed monks, burning incense or banging gongs. Rather, Peruvian bandits, wired Amazonian shamans, wrestling midget bikers and paintball paragliding insanity all help Ben answer one question:

Am I running from my problems or towards a life truly lived?

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】The Last Flannelled Fool My small part in English cricket's demise and its large part in mine【電子書籍】[ Michael Simkins ]

Michael Simkins is the ultimate Sunday cricketer - passionate, obsessive, technically inept, and hopelessly deluded. When an injury rules him out of an entire season, not only might it spell the end of his long career, he is faced more immediately with a summer aimlessly wandering garden centres and listening to The Archers.

He decides instead to set off on an odyssey across the counties of England in search of that golden time in his youth when his passion for the game was first kindled. It's a journey that begins in May in light drizzle at the birthplace of cricket, takes in the burial site of his favourite ground (now a Marks & Spencer) and even stops along the way to flirt with the love child of WG Grace and Kerry Katona that is Twenty20. It ends with the ultimate cricketing zenith - returning to the field of play to bowl an over to Freddie Flintoff in fading light in front of a capacity crowd. So can cricket still bring comfort and meaning to his life or is Old Father Time about to call for Michael's bails?

RVing to the Land of the Midnight Sun【電子書籍】[ Jim Hendrickson ]

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】RVing to the Land of the Midnight Sun【電子書籍】[ Jim Hendrickson ]

This book describes my fifth trip to Alaska where, according to Jack London, once you visit that northern region of the world, it takes a firm hold of your spirit, and you want to return some day.

In the summer of 2014, I made a relatively comfortable road trip for six weeks in my 2008 Lexus SUV with which I pulled a 17-foot custom-made travel trailer that cost $30,000. It had a cozy bed, air conditioner, solar power, and a tiny "wet bath" in which I could almost accomplish my toilet business and take a shower at the same time.

I didn't have a great deal of RVing experience under my belt, but it didn't matter to me because I was willing to learn the ropes of RVing and enjoy (or suffer) any consequences along the road. I'm an adventurer by heart. I love to visit new places, meet new people, and experience new ways of living. I'm a free spirit willing to take chances just for the fun of it.

I spent over 200 hours preparing for this latest journey by reading many books and articles about traveling to the Arctic region. Because my trailer was almost new, it was in excellent condition; I simply washed it and loaded it with food, dishes, utensils, a small pot, a frying pan, clothing, toiletries, several other personal items, a laptop computer, and maps. I also bought an extra spare tire and rim for the RV.

On June 5, 2014 I left my home in Washington state for the Land of the Midnight Sun, where many exciting adventures awaited me just up the road. I hope you enjoy reading about

Patricia Woodard had always wanted to live and work in a foreign country, but the dream seemed to be elusive. Then in the summer of 1975 while she was teaching summer school in her hometown of Whiteville, North Carolina, she received a telegram offering her a teaching position in Bogot, Colombia. Excited and stunned to finally be realizing her dream, she accepted the offer and set off for a year high on a plateau in the Andes Mountains. Several years later, she returned to Colombia, this time to teach in sunny Cali, and along the way realized she had fallen in love with the country and its people. Twice Colombia shares the realities of being an expatriate in a developing country during turbulent political times, and the pleasures of discovering a foreign culture. From the capital city of Bogot to the lively city of Cali, she not only embraced the country but eventually adopted a child there. Her excursions included a trip down the Amazon River, where she learned a novel way to open a bottle of wine, an Andean music festival featuring traditional music played on traditional instruments, indulgence in the succulent Colombian cuisine and weekends with Colombian friends who welcomed her unconditionally to their country.

Bradt’s Uganda has for many years been considered the go-to source of information for travellers interested in this extraordinary country, which boasts Africa’s most biodiverse ? and arguably most exciting ? safari circuit. Written by Philip Briggs, the world’s foremost guidebook writer on Africa, this new tenth edition of the most detailed travel guidebook available to Uganda has been thoroughly updated by local resident and experienced travel writer Andrew Roberts.

Uganda excels for wildlife-watching, and recent transport improvements now make for relatively easy year-round access to key sites. Visit the lush montane forests of Bwindi, which protect one of the world’s largest remaining populations of mountain gorillas, watch habituated chimpanzees in Kibale and tree-climbing lions in Queen Elizabeth National Park, or enjoy outstanding birdwatching throughout ? with more than a thousand bird species in a country similar in size to Great Britain.

As well as treating readers to a dedicated wildlife chapter with over 100 colour wildlife photographs, Bradt’s Uganda guides visitors around key wildlife-watching experiences. It provides up-to-date coverage of gorilla-tracking options, describing gorilla groups and their locations ? everything anyone who dreams of encountering these remarkable primates needs to know.

Uganda is not just about wildlife. Hikers love some of Africa’s tallest mountains, notably the snow-capped Rwenzori (the ‘Mountains of the Moon’), the massive collapsed caldera that tops Mount Elgon, and the forest-swathed volcanic peaks of the Virungas. A highlight for adrenaline junkies is rafting the ‘Grade Five’ white-water rapids on the Nile shortly after it emerges from the inland sea that is Lake Victoria.

In this tenth edition, carefully selected accommodation listings have been updated, providing critical appraisals of optimum options in each price bracket. While tourism has long focussed on western Uganda, this edition strengthens attention on the country’s remote northeast corner, which is emerging as a popular destination that includes the untrammelled savannah of Kidepo National Park and offers opportunities to interact with traditional Karamojong pastoralists. Boasting detailed maps of the country, updated or created from scratch using GPS, and all the travel advice a visitor might want, Bradt’s Uganda remains the essential companion guide to this compelling country.

How to Walk a Puma & other things I learned while stumbing around South America【電子書籍】[ Peter Allison ]

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】How to Walk a Puma & other things I learned while stumbing around South America【電子書籍】[ Peter Allison ]

"Plans are usually only good for one thing - laughing at in hindsight. So, armed with rudimentary Spanish, dangerous levels of curiosity and a record of poor judgement, I set off to tackle whatever South America could throw at me." On his nineteenth birthday, Peter Allison flipped a coin. One side would take him to Africa and the other to South America. He recounted his time spent as a safari guide in Africa to much acclaim in Don't Run, Whatever You do and Don't Look Behind You. Sixteen years later he makes his way to Chile, ready to seek out the continent's best, weirdest and wildest adventures - and to chase the elusive jaguar. From learning to walk a puma (or rather be bitten and dragged along by it) in Bolivia, to finding love in Patagonia and hunting naked with the remote Huaorani people in Ecuador, How to Walk a Puma is Peter's fascinating and often hilarious account of misadventures in South America. Ever the gifted storyteller and cultural observer, Allison makes many observations about life in humid climes, the nature of nomadism, and exactly what it is like to be nearly blasted off a mountain by the famous Patagonia wind. His self-deprecating humour is as delightful as his crazy stunts, and his love for animals - even when they bite - is infectious.

Its gentle hills and dark fairy-tale forests offer a relaxing escape from the rush of modern life.

Melbourne's a city you get to know from the inside out you have to walk it to love it. My favourite time to do this is at night. That's when you capture glimpses of people eating, laughing, talking, arguing, watching TV and reading through half-open terrace house doors and windows ... It is a city of inside places and conversation. Of intimacy.

Melbourne begins on Black Saturday, the day that bushfires tore through the outskirts of Melbourne, destroying the townships of Marysville and Kinglake, shattering thousands of lives. Sophie Cunningham writes about what happened over the year that followed.

Sit through a heatwave, visit the drains underneath the city, participate in a letterpress workshop, wander beside the Yarra, cycle alongside tram tracks and cheer at the footy. Live through the drought before the storm, the rain before yet more fire and days of searing heat. Along the way, be captivated as Cunningham shares her Melbourne, its stories and its characters.

In a new introduction, Cunningham returns to Melbourne after a period away and reflects on how much her city has changed since Melbourne was first published in 2011: it is hotter, greener and has endured the rollercoaster ride from boom times to economic depression that defined 2020.

'Cunningham has successfully captured the dynamics of a city in constant flux, while focusing on the essence of its inner life, which gives it an ambience quite unlike that found in any other Australian city.' Robert Hefner, The Canberra Times

'It would be nice to imagine that the gift of this book to Melbourne is its greater capacity to understand itself and its webs of connection.' David Sornig, Melbourne Review

'An admirable response to the impossible task of writing about a city its history, its present, its characters, its stories, its politics and its personal meaning in a single, accessible volume when any one of these themes should take several. Cunningham is communicating this city's soul as though it's a person, full of contradictions but with an essential character.' - Waleed Aly, The Sunday Age

'This beautiful book provokes nostalgia and deeper thinking about the events, places and people who have defined Melbourne.' -Herald Sun

'Cunningham is communicating this city's soul as though it's a person, full of contradictions but with an essential character.' - Waleed Aly, Australian Book Review

Half a Lifetime in Paris, and Counting【電子書籍】[ Alice Evleth ]

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】Half a Lifetime in Paris, and Counting【電子書籍】[ Alice Evleth ]

Alice Evleth's memoir vignettes are snippets of life. But the 55 vignettes brought together in this book add up to far more than a collection of snippets. They add up to a memoir of half a lifetime in Paris, and counting. Born in 1935, Alice Evleth moved permanently with her husband Earl and then-14-year-old daughter Peggy to Paris from California in 1974 when Earl snagged a job in France. It gives nothing in this book away to tell you that Alice, unwilling to live as "the trailing spouse," developed her own career in France as a historian specialized in the lives and fate of Jewish doctors during the Second World War. It spoils nothing to tell you that for years she and Earl visited an American incarcerated in a French prison on drug charges. And that for years they were frighteningly stalked by an anonymous man on the internet. Nor that Alice likes a good croissant, is fascinated by the sight of a flower growing in the crack of a sidewalk, loves dachshunds, and goes beachcombing on the Greek Island of Aegina every year. It gives nothing away to tell you that Earl died in 2013 and that the irony of being asked to dress a body that would be cremated did not escape her. By then, Alice had been living in Paris for half her life. She still lives in the heart of the city, surrounded by the charms of the 6th arrondissement, with the Luxembourg Garden as her neighborhood park. But don't look for the clich?s of Paris in Alice Evleth's collection of memoir vignettes, for what sets her work apart is the restrained precision with which she writes about personal incidents and events, whether mundane, unexpected, upsetting or heartbreaking, as she examines half a lifetime in Paris, and counting. Unlike most other American memoirs involving life abroad, this book doesn't seek to impress readers with the author's love for or discovery of a foreign place, in this case Paris. Instead, this book sets out to truly reveal a personal, singular life lived there. Paris is not Alice's foreign place; it is her home. This book will appeal to anyone who has lived abroad, whether in Paris or elsewhere, or has ever wondered what it's like to live abroad. Paris-lovers will discover a new way of looking at the City of Light. And anyone interest in writing their memoirs will appreciate the cumulative power of this collection of memoir vignettes.

Whatever You do Don't Run My adventures as a Botswana safari guide【電子書籍】[ Peter Allison ]

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】Whatever You do Don't Run My adventures as a Botswana safari guide【電子書籍】[ Peter Allison ]

Peter Allison was only nineteen when he left Australia for Africa, thinking he might travel around and see a bit of the country before going home to a 'proper job'. But Africa worked its magic, and Peter ended up falling, quickly and completely, in love with the country and its wildlife. Landing in a game reserve in the wildlife-rich Okavango Delta, he became a safari guide and, some twelve years later, his short holiday in Africa isn't over yet.

Whatever You Do, Don't Run is his guide's-eye view of living in the bush, confronting the world's fiercest animals and, most challenging of all, managing herds of gaping tourists. Like the young woman who rejected the recommended safari-friendly khaki to wear a more 'fashionable' hot pink ensemble, or the Japanese tourist who requested a repeat performance of Allison's being charged by a lion so he could videotape it.

Peter Allison - like an affable, younger David Attenborough or a slightly more laid-back Steve Irwin - really knows his wildlife. He's had some extraordinary, once-in-a-lifetime experiences. From close encounters with hungry lions, cranky elephants and over-protective honey badgers, there's not much in the African bush that Peter hasn't seen, done or been chased by. His affection for these wild and dangerous animals and his fascination with, and respect for, their often extraordinary behaviour is completely genuine, deep and infectious. Reading Whatever You Do, Don't Run is like sitting around a campfire late at night and listening to him talking - his stories of the animals and the bush are gentle, warm, funny and utterly engaging.
